2022 ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM Our President & Founder
Dear Friends and Supporters of Solid'Africa.
Thank you for your continued support of our work! We are excited to share with you our annual report for 2022. We would like to thank our donors, volunteers, and partners for their contributions to our work. We could not have achieved our successes without you. For more than a decade, we have worked tirelessly to end nutrition insecurity for vulnerable in-patients during their hospital stay. We have made significant progress in our efforts and are grateful for your support.
While we have achieved many milestones, there is still much to be done. 38% of Rwandans are still at risk of nutrition insecurity while trying to recover from their illness. No one should have to choose between their health or their livelihood, and we, as a community, remain steadfast in our commitment to improving the health and well-being of all Rwandans.
Solid'Africa continued to tackle many of these issues headon in 2022. This report highlights some of our work in these areas.
As we move forward, we must continue to prioritize actions that will lead us toward nutrition equity for not only all Rwandans but all Africans as a whole.
We look forward to continuing our work with you in the years to come.
In Community,
Isabelle Kamariza President & Founder Solid'Africa

ABOUT US
Solid'Africa is a Rwandan social enterprise founded in 2010 to tackle food insecurity in public hospitals because meals are not provided during one’s hospital stay In partnership with Imbuto Foundation, Solid'Africa has built an industrial kitchen capable of cooking 15000 meals per day Since inception, we have served over 5 million meals Currently, Solid'Africa operates in five public hospitals which are C H U K, Muhima, Nyarugenge, Kibagabaga, and Masaka but we plan to expand our services in the whole country To become more autonomous, Solid’Africa has created a Community Benefit Company (CBC) that provides catering, kitchen design, and kitchen management services to private companies 100% of the profit generated from these lucrative activities is re-channeled into feeding vulnerable patients, supporting their endeavors to scale Solid’Africa’s CBC is currently negotiating a private-public partnership with the Government of Rwanda, allowing them to scale and manage all 47 district hospitals
OUR APPROACH
The biggest challenge facing vulnerable patients is lack of medically tailored meals. Which in return slows their recovery To sustain the provision of medically tailored meals, Solid’Africa deploys a farm-to-fork approach that focuses on farming organic produce, cooking medically tailored meals in their industrial kitchen with the help of nutritionists and delivering food directly to hospitals, and collecting all food waste in the kitchen and at the hospitals to make a natural fertilizer and grow organic crops
1) Solid’Africa farms organic produce on land awarded by the Government of Rwanda
2) The food is then cooked in their industrial kitchen Nutritionists design meals to ensure they fit the specific needs of each patient’s condition
3) The food is packaged and served to in-patients at specific public hospitals across Kigali The organization ensures 100% waste reduction at each stage of production/consumption by collecting all food waste in the kitchen and at the hospitals to make a natural fertilizer and grow organic crops

SUCCESS STORIES
On August 4, 2022, a seven-year-old girl named Jacky (not her real name) was admitted to Masaka Hospital for malnutrition Upon admission, she was severely anemic and had lost much of her muscle mass, weighing 11 kg The medical team at Masaka Hospital started her on an IV drip of fluids; unfortunately, due to the family’s financial struggles, Jackie was not able to receive an adequate diet
Thanks to its partnership with Masaka Hospital, Solid’Africa took charge of the child’s well being by providing a tailored diet Jackie was given a high-calorie, nutrient-rich diet to help her regain her strength and energy She was also given medication and an iron supplement to help her anemia The medical team also worked to identify any underlying causes of her malnutrition Jacky was in the hospital for three months and a half before she was discharged During this time, she had gained some weight (4 kg) and strength, and her anemia had improved Solid’Africa and the medical team at Masaka Hospital provided Jacky with the care and support she needed to get back on her feet.
On March 11, 2022, one-year-old Keza (not her real name) was brought to the hospital with severe burns over her whole body Upon further examination, doctors determined that she had been scalded with hot water. The burns caused her to fall into a coma, and she could only eat through a feeding tube As medical care was expensive and the family struggled to make ends meet, Solid’Africa assisted with the payment of Keza’s treatment as well as her diet. To restore her health, Solid’Africa team put her on a liquid-diet consisting of porridge, milk, and vegetarian soup
As Keza got better, she was put on a high-protein diet to restore her strength To prevent infection, Keza went through surgery, which went well. Keza was monitored for several days in the hospital for signs of infection and any other complications Thanks to an appropriate diet and adequate medical care, Keza made a good recovery and was discharged She arrived at the hospital weighing 7 kg, and by the time she left, she weighed 11 kg. She is now a healthy child who will continue to strive!

SPECIAL DIET LIST
List of special diet we provide
We believe food is medicine and that is why we serve medically tailored meals. To efficiently and sustainably respond to the issue of nutrition insecurity, we collaborate with nutritionists to provide meals tailored to patients’ dietary needs: patients with cancer, renal failure, diabetes, heart disease, tube-fed patients, etc. For example this year, we have introduced a special diet for breastfeeding mothers. The menu caters for the mothers' specific dietary needs by incorporating food items that increase breastmilk production. Low-sodium
This is a no added salt diet that includes no more than 1,500 to 2,400 mg of sodium per day. At Solid’Africa this diet is usually composed of bread without salt, bananas, beans, potatoes and pumpkins.
High-Vitamins
This diet consists of vitamin-rich foods like fish, dark leafy greens, seeds, broccoli, pork, beef, mushrooms, nuts, eggs, avocados, peas, and fruits. At Solid'Africa, we typically serve it with a mixture of mushroom soup and green vegetables or cassava leaves accompanied with beetroot juice.
Breastfeeding mothers diet
This involves reducing or completely excluding simple carbohydrates and added sugar from the diet. The menu is prepared from fruits and vegetables, e.g yams , lean protein (e.g., white meat and fish), and whole grains.
This diet typically contains large quantities of protein and only a small amount of carbohydrate. It usually consists of eggs, beans, and vegetables rich in protein such as spinach.

This is a high-fat-high-sugar diet. At Solid'Africa, this dish is typically prepared with red meat, meat soup, spaghetti, and cake (made with banana or vanilla)
A soft diet consists entirely of liquids diet and foods that are easily digestible. We usually make this type of diet composed of soft fish, green bananas, irish potatoes , soups, milk, and sugarfree African tea.
We have a specific diet for breastfeeding mothers who experienced complications during childbirth, developed infections, or are mothers of sick children. We provide high-quality nutrient-rich meals to support their physical health and the production of breast milk, which has a vital role in the baby's growth and development. This diet consists of soft meals like vegetables, light green plantains, soups, and porridge.
OUR IMPACT
Supplementary programs
Our extra programs are Kiza, Gombora, and Sukura. They only make up 5% of everything we do.

KIZA
Kiza covers medication and medical equipment like crutches and wheelchairs The program covers hospital and outpatient medical exams Solid'Africa's Gombora program helps recovering patients return home by covering their remaining bills and transportation costs The program also covers the cost of medical tests both within and outside the hospitals
GOMBORA
Under the Gombora program, Solid’Africa assists patients who are unable to pay the remainder of their bills by covering the outstanding amounts and transportation fees to help them return to their homes after their recovery We also pay the caution fee that patients need to pay before their hospitalization This fee is a form of prepayment that hospitals demand weekly while treating their patients
SUKURA

2022 FINANCES
One of the key elements pivotal to building our success is the sourcing and management of finances. In 2022, the financial management took a different approach aimed at better understanding our cost drivers and boosting our operational efficiency through a more robust financial reporting mechanism Internally generated revenues are now a focus area through Solid’Africa CBC’s contribution, which covers part of the overall program costs In 2021, the coverage was 17% and in 2022 it rose to 24%, the target for 2023 is 30%, and a higher percentage for the subsequent years as the operations of CBC expand. We are continually exploring avenues for prudent use of the finances received, we are happy to report that in 2022, we achieved a saving of $81,547 attributed to boosting the farm production.

Key Successes
