THE

WHITE DRESS PROJECT The White Dress project is an international collaboration between the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and Southampton Solent University (SSU) in the UK, giving Fashion Image Design higher diploma students at HKDI and BA Fashion Styling students at SSU the opportunity to explore design exposure and learning across cultures through the common ground of the White Dress.

Students were given identical copies of a collection of 17 white dresses, produced by the HKDI students from the higher diploma Fashion Design and Development programme. They were then provided with an open brief to create styled images using the dresses. Students from Southampton Solent University’s BA (Hons) Fashion Photography, BA (Hons) Photography and BA (Hons) Make-up and Hair Design courses also got involved, working with the design teams to produce the images featured here.

The inspirations for the students’ narratives are wide-ranging.

In some photographs cultural influences are evident, with elements of kitsch and harajuku – a sub-culture that emerged in Japan and is now popular with Hong Kong youth – as well as more traditional elements of Hong Kong culture, such as marriage and weddings.

Other groups drew upon alterative social themes such as ‘toxicity’ and ‘materialism’, while some SSU students chose to shoot in derelict buildings – referencing both the unrest of 1980s England as well as that of the current day. Some of the work is more abstract or surreal in its conception, taking inspiration from spiritual figures or using post-production to create a fracture in the image, causing us to look twice.

The diverse ways that the White Dress is customised, accessorised, modelled and situated demonstrate the scope of the stylist’s role in constructing narrative and defining how clothing communicates.

The only common thread connecting all the students’ works – besides the dresses themselves – is the imagination and exuberance they show.
