Fashion media is a dynamic and constantly evolving area of the fashion industry that focuses on creating content that influences consumer behaviour. Whereas traditionally this was the remit of fashion magazines now the explosion of new technologies has transformed the fashion industry and how it communicates beyond the printed word to digital spheres, imagery, film, and events. From the traditional careers of journalists and photographers have evolved new and more specialised roles; fashion media specialists now operate as comfortably online, behind the camera, on film and in corporate scenarios as they do in print. Story-telling has evolved and BA (Hons) Fashion Media will help you take your writing, image making, design and marketing skills to a level that will make your graduate portfolio stand out from the crowd and demonstrate your ability to capture interest, shape trends and drive engagement.

Research + experimentation + collaboration

6

What you will study In your first year you will study units on research, trend forecasting, image making, editorial design, digital fashion landscapes, PR, marketing, social media strategy and ethics. All units are taught under the umbrella of our course brand Carbon ensuring you will receive a real-world university experience from your first day. Lectures and seminars make way for active learning sets, production days and live briefs to ensure you ‘learn by doing’ every day. You will collaborate in shared sessions with peers and develop unique fashion communities of support and friendship.

Carbon Carbon is our real-world brand providing omni-media content across digital, print and web. You will have the opportunity to assume live job roles on the publication from editor, fashion director, stylist, social media editor and marketing manager to art director, photographer and digital editor and within those roles steer content, innovate and drive engagement while managing a small team and creating a range of fresh fashion content. You will run the website and the brand’s social media channels honing your skills and developing a live outward facing portfolio from day one. In 2019 Carbon was nominated in the Student Magazine of the Year (internationally) category by the media platform 7 Stack. Check out all our back issues on www.issuu.com/carbononcampus

You will also learn the secrets of styling, get to grips with fashion photography both on location and in our state of the art studios and be taught the art of image making for editorial, social media and advertising using the latest photographic and studio equipment. Whether you come to us with camera experience or as a complete novice the learning is adapted to ensure you get the most out of every technical, practical and academic session. You will access to the photography stores and can access cameras and other essential equipment for free. Our dedicated mac suites will house all of your digital sessions.

How you will be assessed There are no exams on this programme. Both course work and timed assignments are staggered throughout every unit and mirror real-world briefs. Most projects work to a portfolio submission allowing you to build up your work over a unit and submit a body of work that shows breadth and progression. You receive formative feedback at each stage which will allow you to edit, improve and adapt your work to reflect your learning. Briefs are broad and allow for a number of outcomes so you can chose to how you prefer to present your work 8

What you will study In your third year you take the reigns and professionalise your skills and your portfolio to reflect the expectations of your chosen industry pathway. You may chose to develop your brand (established at level 5) to the next level or start a new project and create a future fashion brand that allows you to create fresh, eye catching and engaging content to drive traffic and maximise engagement. You will pitch ideas to a brand based on a given live brief, you could chose to work with your favourite fashion retailers and create multi platform content or reimagine their existing offer to showcase your future forecasting and media knowledge.

Media event One of the highlights of your third year will be a series of live events that you plan and execute from scratch. Media event management is an important part of the media industry and you will explore all aspects from PR and comms to marketing and communication design. The events could be live or digital and you will work in corporate teams to assume job roles and work with industry partners to deliver strategy and outcomes on budget. Check out past events here on our Solent Fashion Media Youtube channel 18

‘ Our first year has been amazing. So much to do and they really make it feel like you are working in industry with regular deadlines and meetings. I’ve already been an editor of our magazine and it was unbelievable the trust the tutors put in me. My ideas were heard and I am learning so much. I’m loving it and so glad I chose Solent ’ Yas, 1st year

‘ Working in teams means you don’t need to have all the skills straight away but use each other’s expertise to get the work done. We each bring something to the team and learn from each other as well as the tutors. I wasn’t full of confidence when I started but with each experience it grows more and more ’ Lucie, 1st year

‘ I’ve been on a few work placements already and they are always impressed with the range of content I’ve produced so far and how much I know about the industry. I am only half-way through my second year but I have already been an editor, established my own brand and worked for live clients. It’s been amazing ’ Emily, 2nd Year ‘ I was undecided between the different fashion media and promotion courses but I am so glad I came to Solent. My confidence has grown so much and I really feel ready for a career in the industry. My friends on other courses are envious of the experiences we’ve had ‘ Olivia. 3rd year

‘It’s hard work but so worth it. I can see a massive difference in the quality of my work and already have a huge portfolio online that I am really proud of. I’ve made some great friends too. Not just on this course but by collaborating with the other fashion courses. There’s such a great community at Solent ’ Natasha, 2nd year

‘ The support we have from our tutors has been amazing. There is an open-door policy so we can access the team at any time and even out of hours they are there for us. I know that at other unis they don’t get that much time with their tutors and I feel lucky to have had such genuine support. They really believe in us 27 and want us to succeed ’ Erin 3rd year
