S

pring and summer has always been my favourite time of year; it marks the start of new beginnings and warmer weather. Summer, for me is all about spending time with family and friends, and this is something the team and I have incorporated throughout the magazine. The summer season means we start to introduce colour into our wardrobes. Our fashion sections will help you achieve a wardrobe full of colour, with something for all ages. When the sun starts shinning, we’ve got you covered. From how to update your garden furniture, gift ideas and keeping your little ones entertained. This issue has really pushed me out of my comfort zone; taking on a new role has given me a new found confidence. When we started this project, the majority of us were strangers. Seeing how the magazine has come together, I feel so proud of the team I have worked with. With the new Watermark centre opening, Westquay has grown as a brand to encompass all walks of life; in turn this issue of the magazine reflects the changes and growth of Westquay as a brand. On behalf of the team I would like to thank Westquay for giving us the opportunity to showcase our skills and to represent the brand. Also a special thanks to Svetlomir, Liam and Lisa for their help and support

throughout this process, without your guidance the magazine wouldn’t have reached it’s full potential. Lastly I would like to thank every member of the team, for the hard work and long days (all the coffee runs were worth it) as the final product is something you all should be proud of. Editing this magazine has really kick started my summer and I cannot wait to sample all Westquay has to offer this season. I hope you all have a perfect summer, whether you are going abroad or staying in the heart of Southampton, Westquay has got you covered for all your needs this season.

THE contributors Meet some of the talented people behind this issue

Favourite Shoot- Minimalism What were you inspired by? Minimalistic fashion and how simplistic outfits are timeless and create a premium looking aesthetic for an affordable price. The shoot itself incorporated these values and was very much about structure and shape. The styling choices I made help continue with this theme incorporating structured garments and a timeless monochrome colour palette. If you could meet any photographer dead or alive who would it be? This is a very difficult question, though one photographer I have always particularly admired is Richard Avedon, who I have always found compelling.

Favourite Visual-Minimalism inspired fashion feature. What were you inspired by? WGSN was my starting point, showing up and coming trends in SS17. As director/makeup artist, I got a chance to link everything together working alongside Jamie to create the minimalist shoot and beauty sections. Transitional trend sees adventurous volume, minimised detail and subtle utility references unite for a directional look that's gracious yet functional. Colour is stripped back and sophisticated with a monochromatic look. What is your all time favourite piece of artwork? Cézanne - Mont Sainte-Victoire, this is one of the most moving and revelatory struggles in the history of art.

Favourite page-Scent from heaven Inspired by the floral fragrances that we imagine when we think of spring and summer, I wanted to create the perfect guide to discovering your new signature scent for this season. What beauty product can you not live without? I couldn’t live without setting powder. Once I’ve done my make-up in the morning i want it to stay looking fresh all day. As someone who is always running errands and busy working, the last thing I want to be worrying about is having to top it up. My favourite setting powder is the Laura Mercier translucent powder. It keeps my skin looking flawless all day.

Favourite Page-Kiddie cool with Claire’s Inspired by vibrant summertime colours and spending time with family, I wanted to create a summertime look that even little ones can enjoy. What was the last item you bought? Earrings! You can never have too many pairs. They add so much to an outfit with minimal effort, my current favourite are statement hoops from New Look.

Chelsea Batt & Hope Bullen designers

What inspired your design process? (Hope) My nan buys me Cosmo every month so some of my inspo comes from them (it’s a fave mag of mine too, guilty) and also Stylist! (Chelsea) I feel like there are just too many magazine designs out there that I was inspired by. I’m a lover of Empire, the BBC earth and NME, so it is possible that I used them a little bit. What did you learn about yourself whilst working on this issue? We never knew we could design so many pages in such a small amount of time! Now we’re strong, sassy and feel like we can conquer the world now (joking).

But, if movies aren’t your thing, there is still a ton of exciting things left to explore. Hollywood bowl is the American themed bowling alley that is situated on the lower floor. There are 10 lanes in total which also includes VIP lanes which can be booked for occasions and events. It’s the perfect place for kid’s parties or a fun day out with a group of friends. Hollywood bowl also has its own restaurant and bar so food and drinks are easily accessible.

Westquay Magazine SS17

The £85 million Watermark building is the leisure complex that is an extension to West Quay. It has created around 500 new jobs and has added a whole new level of diversity to shopping in Southampton.

all love food, so if we think it’s fantastic then we are sure that you will too. Watermark’s cinema de lux is the UK’s first all laser cinema. All 10 screens fitted inside have laser projectors installed, which makes 3D viewing more incredible than it has ever been before. The cinema is only the fourth all laser cinema Europe making it a top attraction for families and film lovers across the country. If you haven’t yet checked it out then it is definitely worth a visit.

f you’re local to Southampton you will most likely have seen a huge new building slowly begin to emerge, now after two years of construction the Watermark development finally opened its doors to the public at the very end of 2016. So far the building and it’s facilities have been a huge hit with both locals and those who have travelled to visit it, but what can you actually expect from it?

It’s five o’clock somewhere You’ve made it to 5 o’clock. Time to switch off and relax. Catch up with some friends and let the good times roll. B

BILL’S

ill’s founded by Bill Collinson, is a la mode restaurant which started as a small greengrocer which then was expanded due to high demand in Lewes, Sussex. A flood hit Lewes in 2000, which resulted in the restaurant next to Bill’s stall to stay closed. Bill’s expanded his premises reopened as a café and was an immediate hit.

CABANA

F

ounded by Jamie Barber and David Ponte, Cabana is a restaurant that offers a slice of Rio street food right in the heart of Westquay’s new Watermark centre.

Seated at the bar, the bartender makes your drink to order right in front of you. The Cosmopolitan is served clear, refreshingly cold and in martini glass with a lime slice garnish perched on the rim.

Cabana offers you a slice of authentic Brazil with an emphasis on street food. The food is made to share, emulating Brazilian barbeques and good times with friends. Cabana embodies the Brazilian outlook ‘Tudo Bem’ meaning ‘everything’s good’ which is easy to see when you experience all Cabana has to offer.

Every bartender makes a Cosmopolitan differently. This particular Cosmopolitan had a very powerful citrus flavour, which is easy to drink and not over powering. This drink is perfectly refreshing for those humid summer evenings.

The restaurant plays upbeat music and the interior offers an array of eccentric photographs. With the walls sporting uplifting colours, it is easy to feel at home here. The seating is unique and comfortable with one of the larger booths sporting donated denim jeans. The greeting by front of house staff was warm and welcoming which added to the overall positive atmosphere.

2 FOR 1

Our cocktail of choice was a classic Cosmopolitan, which is included on the 2 for 1 cocktail menu which start at £6.95 which is offered by Cabana seven days a week between 5-7pm.

Opening times Monday - Thursday 12-10pm Friday & Saturday 12pm -11pm Sunday 12pm – 9pm

The Cosmopolitan accompanied by the Guca-Molho (Freshly made Guacamole and bottomless corn chips) offered on the ‘Snacks’ sections of the ‘Street food’ menu was a match made in heaven. Cabana has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, which is perfect to spend some time with friends, and it is easy to see how you could spend hours in this restaurant as it feels like a home from home.

PERFECT FOR: GROUP OF FRIENDS RATING: 4/5

Even though Bill’s have opened restaurants throughout the UK there is a still a family orientated feel throughout all the restaurants which was immediately felt when entering the Southampton Watermark branch. Every time a new branch of Bill’s opens, Bill Collinson oversees the build to make sure each one has the overall same feel as the primary restaurant. In each restaurant there are a range of products such a Bill’s jam and chutney’s, which you can purchase for £3.50 and up.

PERFECT FOR: PAYDAY DRINKS RATING: 3.5/5

Bill’s have incorporated springtime fruits and accents to create a fresh, vibrant and uplifting menu. The drinks chosen were the ‘Raspberry Collins’ and the ‘English Spring Garden’. The cocktails were vastly different in taste and aromas, both served in a large wine glass with fresh fruit and a stripy paper straw. The ‘Raspberry Collins’ is much on the sweeter side with tart aftertaste which would appeal to those whom like sweet and sour notes. The ‘English Spring Garden’ was refreshing and fragrant with notes of cucumber which would be perfect for sipping alongside a salad. Bill’s cocktail menu will change on 6th of June for a summer themed cocktail menu. Perfect for sipping in the summer sun in Bill’s outside dining area which overlooks the Watermark Centre and the outside water feature.

COCKTAILS Bills offer a seasonal menu for food and drink offering fruits and vegetables, which are in season depending on the time of year. £3.95

TGI FRIDAYS

T

he first TGI Fridays opened in New York back in 1965 by Alan Stillman. TGI Fridays quickly became the place to go for a fabulous cocktail and a night you wouldn’t forget. TGI Fridays (short for Thank Goodness It’s Friday) first moved to the UK in 1985 in Birmingham. TGI Fridays pride themselves on providing their guests with a unique, fun and pleasurable dining experience. The TGI Friday’s located in the Watermark centre is the second branch to open in Southampton, which proves just how much Southampton loves the TGI Friday’s experience. The interior of this branch is incredible with reference to American culture and TGI Fridays heritage.

Westquay Magazine SS17

The bar is definitely a stand out feature of this branch with a pink luminescent sign saying ‘cocktails’ highlighting an array of alcohol artfully placed on the shelves. The interior makes you feel relaxed with comfy booths, unique chairs and current music playing it is easy to unwind here. The welcome we received in the restaurant was amazing. The hostess showed us to the bar where we took our seats to order some cocktails.

2 FOR 1 TGI Fridays offers a 2 for 1 after work drink special ‘The after work social’ Sunday- Thursday 5-7pm. Whilst looking through the menu the bar staff chatted about the drinks along with what flavours we liked which was really helpful in making the right choice. They were so friendly and helpful, it really made the experience. We were made a couple to try, a Gremlin and a Mudslide. The Gremlin was an immediate hit as it is a very sweet and easy to drink. Definite winner, served in a tall glass, the different alcohol sits in layers creating a muted rainbow. The Mudslide served in a large wine glass with chocolate chips sprinkled on top was also very tasty. This would appeal to those who like to indulge in a creamier, richer cocktail. On the 2 for 1 offer, we tried the ‘Paradise Punch’ and the ‘June Bug’ both of which were fruity and refreshing. Perfect for an after work drink.

ALL BAR ONE

he first All Bar One opened in Surrey in 1994. All Bar One has an extensive cocktail menu, as well as being the perfect place to catch up with friends. The new All Bar One at the Watermark Westquay is one of almost 50 bars open across the UK. Not only do they offer great cocktails, but a selection of main meals, small bites and tapas. If you are looking to celebrate, All Bar One offers party packages for food and drink. Adding to this, if you are looking for a unique gift, you can treat that special someone to a cocktail making masterclass for just £20 per head. Located on the lower level of the Watermark centre, All Bar One overlooks the rustic back of the walls and water feature. On arrival the bar is opened up to easily access the outside seating area. The interior is contemporary and vibrant with hanging light fixtures that add an exciting aura to the restaurant. Even though the restaurant is busy, the host makes time to chat and to make you feel at ease and welcome.

5 O’COCKTAILS Cocktails are All Bar One’s speciality, with an extensive menu of over 30 cocktails the choice of what drink to choose is a hard one to make. All Bar One offer discounted cocktails on their ‘5 o’clocktails' deal, which

is available Sunday – Thursday. The 5pm cocktails are classics, and easy to drink which would be perfect for relaxed Sunday evening or after work catch up. The outdoor seating area is perfect for summer evenings, with a variety of table settings depending on your group size. A classic Porn Star Martini was the drink of choice. Smooth and sweet with half a passion fruit bobbing gently in small layer of froth was perfect for a spring evening. Served with a shot of prosecco it was clear a lot of thought had gone into curating this cocktail menu and the making of each individual drink. The cocktail was pleasantly sweet, tangy and punchy, but teamed with the prosecco it balance the still tang of the fruit with the fizz of the sweet bubbles. Perfection.

TOP 7 FOR SUMMER

Summer is one of the most exciting times of the year, as it's a chance for everyone to experiment with different outfits and accessories. Here are some of the must haves for women during this season, and why they can really make your whole outfit.

words Ivy Kamau

1. Sunglasses

Westquay Magazine SS17

The best way to protect your eyes and stay stylish is with a pair of statement sunglasses. They always come in different styles and they give your face some character. Whether you opt to for a huge pair or a more reserved pair of sunglasses, they are definitely one of the key items everyone must have in summer.

2. Sandals

32

With the heat and humidity, your feet need to be comfortable as well as being able to breath. Enclosed shoes such as trainers and boots are less preferred during this season. Sandals however are always a favourite, because they allow your feet to have some air. Sandals are a must have for the summer season, but don’t forget to paint your toes.

3. Playsuits

When you have a playsuit on, it really does make your life much easier. For those days when you’re in a rush to get out the door, a playsuit prevents you from having to think about putting an outfit together. They also come in different styles, some being sleeveless or even off the shoulder which is also in trend.

4. Signature bag

Whilst you’re enjoying your summer adventures, an attractive bag is very essential to have. Oversized bags are always a good choice especially if you’re going to the beach. If you’re going out and don’t need to carry too much, a satchel bag would be the best option because it’s small but also very classy. You can also put a satchel bag over your shoulder. This makes it easier if you’re out all day as you don’t have to carry a big chunky bag.

5. Maxi dresses These type of dresses return every summer because they are such beautiful pieces to have in your wardrobe. A maxi dress, looks great on women of all shapes. Their flowy and stretchy material is what keeps you cool and stylish in the summer. Maxi dresses are also great with sandals and an oversized bag.

6. Chokers

For a few years chokers have really been in trend, but they are more popular in sunnier seasons. They are not worn as much in winter because people are wearing scarfs and turtle necks. Chockers won’t disappoint you in summer, they are quirky pieces to give some creative detail to your neck area.

7. Kimonos and Dusters

These light pieces come in all sorts of designs and colours. Kimonos are very girly pieces as they are made out of chiffon and add a nice flare to your outfit. Dusters are the less heavy version of cardigans. They also look good with a summer evening look. If you want different dimensions in your look, try wearing a kimono or a duster with a crop top and some shorts.

All these pieces can be purchases from M&S, ZARA, New Look, River Island, Accessorize, H&M, NEXT and John Lewis in WestQuay.

STAND OUT IN AFRICAN PRINT

What was regarded as a fabric of less value and no fashion importance is now relevant and appealing to the Western world. African prints are having a moment in the high street shops.

T

words | Bren Mupa

Weekend is a brand found in John Lewis, and recently I noticed that this brand does African print clothes. A long maxi skirt captured my eyes, it’s bold and colourful pattern makes it a “must have” this season. It can be worn at any event; one is guaranteed to have heads turning and winning you best dressed at any event. The African print maxi skirt has an elegant effect as well as a laid back look. Coordinate the skirt with a matching top to pull off a vibrant summer look. The Weekend Ermanna MaxMara top is made from pure cotton and cut to an easy going fit. The neckline is round and the top is sleeveless. For an elegant finish, the skirt needs to be paired with heels. The African print Max Mara skirt and top features bold shades of orange, white and black. These colours are suitable for summer. The skirt is made from a stretch cotton fabric and the sizes are generous. The contrasting band on the skirt creates flattering definition at the waist creating an illusion. The unlined finish ensures the classic A line silhouette hangs beautifully. The pockets give the skirt a finished look. John Lewis has a range of brands which do African print inspired clothes. Marc Cain is another brand found in John Lewis. The £249.00 Marc Cain dress is adorned with an African inspired print. This dress has bold brown and black print; it is suitable to be worn on a girl’s night out or for a holiday. This dress is a must have, it can be considered as a little black dress African version. The Marc Cain African print dress has full lining; this enhances the quality of this dress and it is cut to an easy going shape. It has 3/4 length flounce sleeves with hem stitch bands and a V neck line with hot fix stones. Wear with heels or sandals to attain an elegant look and go bare foot for a laid back holiday look. Add a pop of pattern to your swimwear this summer and stand out at the beach. African patch work Tankini Top is in black and white, if you are worried about loud colours this swimwear is for you. The pattern is bold but the colour of the print is toned down. It has an alluring neckline and straps making it suitable for people with big or small bust line to wear. The same print comes in a bikini top and matching brief. This collection is found in John Lewis. African prints are not only worn by Africans but by all who finds inspiration in African prints. Yet some people may think one has to be of African descent to love and buy African print inspired clothes, be rest assured that they suit everyone, despite race or creed. If these looks are up your street; get on with the trend, join the movement and buy yourself some African print.

43

In 2010 the trend hit the mainstream and has featured on the runway all over the world. Some designers such as Burberry are fusing African print with their designs for a contemporary look. African print has also featured on the red carpet with some A list celebrities such as Naturi Naughton and Lupita Nyongo glamorising it. This has definitely changed people’s perception on the fabric. According to the article published in fashion reborn: Blends of African outfits from Ankara “Destiny of the once before cheap Ankara fabrics, have undergone a magical transformation. Elegant creativity by designers has made it a preferred choice of the rich and the celebrities.”

Westquay Magazine SS17

he terms African print, tribal wear or ethnic print must catch one’s attention when mentioned. The patterns are often bold and bright; this fabric is versatile and can be used to make clothes, swimwear and accessories. In the olden days this fabric only appealed to the older generation it was commonly seen at huge gatherings such as; funerals and weddings in Africa.

MAC Velvet Teddy

Westquay Magazine SS17 52

Buying beauty products can be a daunting experience for all of us at some point in our lives, especially when we want to try a new product. There are so many different brands out there claiming that their products do the job best, but who are we meant to believe? Beauty bloggers have become one of the most trusted and reliable sources when it comes down to figuring out what’s worth splashing your cash on because lets face it, they’ve tried almost every beauty item under the sun. However, how do you go about contacting a blogger? Yes they’re on social media a lot of the time, but they’re also busy people earning a living just like me and you. For this edition we’ve managed to get in touch with some fabulous local beauty bloggers who’ve got the low down on which products you need in your make-up bag this season.

My go to nude. MAC’s Velvet Teddy is a staple in my makeup bag. It’s the lipstick that I reach for when I really can’t be bothered to put any on at all. This shade suits so many skin tones and goes with tonnes of makeup looks. If you don’t have this in your collection, you really should!

So what are her ‘go-to’ holy grail beauty essentials? The Bodyshop All-in-One BB cream This is my favourite base for ‘no makeup’ days, and those mornings when I’m running errands and hitting the gym. I love how it transforms to match my skin tone and is super lightweight, and comfortable to wear all day.

Benefit Ka-Brow As someone extremely lacking in natural brows, Benefit’s Ka-Brow helps me fake bigger, bolder, fuller brows. It may be pricey but this little pot of products

I’ve recently started using this and it’s quickly becoming one of my favourite bronzers. It’s a perfect contour shade for me or, I can use it to warm up my whole face for a more subtle look.

Urban Decay Naked Palette The original Naked Palette is my favourite of all of them. I love the mix of mattes and shimmers and always come back to this palette for both day and night time looks. Virgin is a great inner corner highlight and Sin and Toasted are perfect for lazy, one shadow looks.

Another product skin care wise I couldn’t live without is Liz Earle, there is no particular product of theirs I can say is my favourite purely because their whole brand is fantastic. I use their Cleanse and Polish Cream Cleanser and their Toner every single night to remove my makeup and have used various moisturisers, face masks, oils and creams and I can honestly say it is the best brand of natural skincare I have ever come across.

The Body Shop shea exfoliating sugar body scrub- This is my holy-grail body exfoliator! It makes my skin feel so soft, I just adore it!

Victoria’s Secret body mist Victoria’s Secret body mist- These are my favourite scents for every day use, as they are just so light and refreshing! My personal favourite is ‘pure seduction’ which smells divine, and I cannot resist popping it in my (oversized) handbag for spritzing throughout the day!

Benefit’s They’re Real Double The Lip Benefit’s They’re Real Double The Lip- I loved this range when it was just the mascara, but the new additions are amazing! Double the lip is essentially a lip liner and lipstick in one, but it’s super easy to apply as it’s just like applying normal lipstick! This makes it perfect for quick but effective lip looks and I just love it so much!

I have tried and reviewed many products in my time as a beauty blogger, and have to come to find some real staples that I always go back to that can for sure say are my holy grails/favourites.

Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder

One product I don’t think I could live without is my Laura Mercier translucent setting powder. This has become a staple in my beauty regime and I cannot go a day without wearing it. I have some slightly dry and some slightly oily parts on my face and I have realised that this powder:

Westquay Magazine SS17

We all know that summer can really take a toll on our skin skin, especially as most of us love to soak up those glistening rays. To reduce the risk of skin damage it is recommended that you never go out unprotected and always use at least 20 SPF as an adult and never less than 30 SPF for children.

4

Keeping the skin hydrated should always be a priority, but this year we are taking it up a notch. With brands such as M&S and Newlook really upping their skincare game and keeping in mind what it is we want from our skincare products, they’ve both produced new items for 2017 that make protecting ourselves feel like pamper time.

56

Here we’ve put together some must-have summer essentials to keep your skin looking and feeling its very best, whilst keeping the price tag small.

M&S Sun Smart moisture protect nourishing dry oil SPF 30, £12.50 If you can’t stand the feeling of applying sun cream, then you’re not alone. Recent polls found that one reason that we often burn throughout the summer is due to many of us hating the feeling of it on our skin. Pores can often feel clogged with thick products, which can lead to unpleasant breakouts which is not what we want when it’s the season to show off some skin. This combo of light oils from M&S are SPF 30 and will keep your skin hydrated and protected without weighing you down.

Subtly Smoky 3 step guide Winter was all about dramatic liner and creating that perfect thick wing. But if you’re not a pro at the cat-eye look then don’t panic, because the summer is all about the simple smoky eye which can be achieved in just 3 simple steps. When creating a smoky eye look you don’t have to be precise as it isn’t about creating harsh lines so if you’re in a rush but want something slightly glam it’s the perfect look.

u

Westquay Magazine SS17

To begin, you’ll want to prime the lashes. This will make your lashes appear fuller and add extra length when it comes to applying mascara. The M&S Autograph Lash Primer is great for this. It coats the lashes in a silicone base, making the lashes thicker and longer.

M&S Autograph Pencil Collection £19.50 Newlook small eye

The next step is liner. A pencil or kohl eyeliner works amazing as it’s blend-able and easy to work with. Draw a thin line close to the lash line, grab a brush and get blending it upwards!

blending brush £5.99 You can add more layers of liner to create a dramatic look or keep it simple and apply just one. You don’t have to stick to the standard black smoky eye either. Coloured liner is set to be huge this year so get creative with blues and greys and reds. The M&S Autograph range have produced a collection of beautiful, on-trend colours which are perfect for a summer smoky eye.

Last of all, you’ll want a good coating of mascara to really make the look pop. When it comes to a smoky look, the blacker the mascara the better. The lengthening mascara from Newlook works like a dream and really helps to add some texture to the look.

F How to fInd the perfect gift...

Westquay Magazine SS17 60

words | Charlotte Walter

1. The Thought…

No matter what time of year you are giving gifts, the most important thing is to put thought into it. Start planning what you are going to get that person a while in advance, there is nothing worse than a rushed gift, think about: What are their hobbies? Is there something they have longed to have? What is their favourite shop? Are they going anywhere this spring/summer that require something portable? People often appreciate gifts that can last for a while, something original that they don’t already have or want a newer version of. If you know the person extremely well, this should be a piece of cake!

2. Listen

Whether it is a Wedding, Birthday, Anniversary or Graduation, always listen to the person you are hoping to buy for. They might be subtly giving hints about an item or experience they would like to have. Picking up on little things they say also shows that you truly care about that person and know them well.

3. Observation

Chances are, the person you are buying a gift for is someone you spend a lot of your spare time with. You may already have an idea of a gift to give that person but if you’re both window shopping, in a store or just Internet Browsing, what catches their eye may surprise you. You will be able to tell they are interested in an item because they will say something, smile or see their eyes open wide. If you’re someone who really struggles and is indecisive when it comes to buying gifts, having a keen eye will help you massively. Also, by paying attention to what excites them and what they’re in to, you are 100% going to make them a very happy and grateful person.

inding the perfect gift for someone you love, care about or even yourself, can be stressful at any time of year. In the spring and summer seasons I see that people the struggle most. People don’t know the best clothing to buy due to unpredictable weather (unlike the rest of the year when it is predominantly cold), and with general gifts for women, men and kids, there are so many options, that you just don’t know where to start. However, I have managed to round up a few tips to help you know how to find what you are looking for these next two sunny and exciting seasons.

4. Surprises

Surprises are great if you are wanting to get a gift for someone who enjoys a bit of mystery. The spring and summer months are festival seasons and what better way to treat someone (particularly for a birthday), by taking them to see their favourite band or singer. If you were to do this, you could even give them subtle hints in the weeks leading up to the festival or concert to give them an insight of what is coming up without giving too much away. Perfect or what?

5. Good Quality

Many of the gifts you will consider buying for someone are often something they can wear, use to decorate their home or is portable. No matter what it is, there is nothing worse than someone unwrapping a gift to find it is partially broken or damaged. Not only does it disappoint the person receiving the gift but it also seems as if you haven’t put much thought into the gift by not double checking the product before purchasing. Always, always ensure that what you have chosen is clean and the best quality possible – you would hate to think that you have wasted your money or been ripped off.

Children’s Colour Book £3.00 Flying Tiger Copenhagen This might seem like a simple gift, but you can never go wrong with a colouring book for kids. Fun for both genders and made even better by being able to sit outside.

Gifts for Kids | Girls and Boys Gifts suitable for both young boys and girls can be hard at any time of year, whether it’s Birthdays, Christmas, Easter, Holidays or random. Westquay are way ahead of this; their range of shops from M&S, to Cath Kidston, to Flying Tiger Copenhagen, have a range of items to choose from. I picked a few out that could help you with your gift struggles this Spring and Summer.

You have your comfortable, relaxing sofa, whether it’s old or new, but what about that extra something to finish it off? Even if you are someone who throws the cushions off the sofa because they ‘get in the way’, just to lay them out nicely if you have company coming over and want your living room to look tidy, cushions are a must in my book. Yellow Woolly Geo Cushion, £18.00

Cross Stitch Detail Cushion, £7.00

Floral Patchwork Cushion, £7.00

Yellow always seems to be a bit of a ‘hit’ or ‘miss’ colour. It’s usually ‘too light’ or ‘too bright’, but in this case, I believe this Woolly Geo Cushion from Next is an absolute must have. Made of wool, cotton, nylon and polyester, it is incredibly soft and can decorate a sofa or sofa chair especially well, particularly if they are a plain colour as this cushion’s colour and pattern add an extra something to make your living room shine.

A cross-stitched cushion always adds a certain elegance due to the intricate design they usually have. This cushion from Next is no exception. It’s extremely light colours with small details of light and dark blue will make this a beautiful addition to your living room or bedroom.

Floral designs are always a must and in Spring and Summer, blossom in all aspects of life (not just fields). With four unique floral patterns in pinks and purples, this cushion is one to purchase. Adding a splash of colour to your living room or bedroom can make your home that bit more homelier which is what you want. Suitable for machine washing, this cushion will last you a long time, so investing in more than one may be something to consider as well.

Is the food court breast feeding friendly?

T

he debate around breastfeeding has been a long and passionate one. But for those of us here at West Quay magazine, we can’t understand why. As a popular destination for shopping and fun for all the family, we encourage families to come and enjoy the wonderful facilities that West Quay has to offer. With so many families deciding to enjoy the wonderful food court that Westquay has established, it is inevitable that a breast feeding mother will have to feed her child. I decided to head to the food court in West Quay to find out what the general public thinks about breastfeeding in public. Maureen 67; My Daughter breast feeds her children and I would be shocked if anyone had the nerve to call her out for it. If you don’t want to see it, then don’t look. It’s none of their business frankly.

Charlie, 34; Are we still talking about all this breastfeeding stuff? Have people still not gotten over all of that? There are far bigger issues going on in the world and we are arguing if it is ok for a mother to feed her child. Most of the responses I got were people who were officially over the whole debate. It’s clear that the public do not care about mothers breastfeeding. But to be sure I tried to talk to some of the people who work at various food chains in the food court. Understandably most of them were to busy to talk given how popular the food court is, but one worker took the time to send me a statement on his opinions on breast feeding. “Honestly I’m not used to seeing women doing it that often, but I think that is because of the stigma that sometimes goes with it. I have had a couple of customers who’ve done it in the restaurant, they always use some sort of cover and are usually subtle but not trying to hide it per say. I believe that women have the right to do it anywhere and if someone asked me if they could in the restaurant I would say go ahead. It’s a natural process and women shouldn’t feel anxious or afraid to do it. I know that costa has a sign up saying that they are breast feeding friendly, we don’t have one at work as far as I’m aware but I might look into Yo!’s stance on it and see if we could get something like that put up” Steve, 22 To us, this is solid evidence that West Quay food court is not only a delicious place to dine, but is also a truly breast feeding friendly facility. So why not take your family and enjoy some delicious food from one of the many dining options available.

77

Shona, 20; Why is it such an issue? People can do what they want. Animals produce milk to feed their young and so do we, it’s natural for goodness sake.

Westquay Magazine SS17

Harry 17; I don’t really think about it, it’s not my job to tell someone how to bring up their children. My mum is the strongest person I know and I wouldn’t disrespect her or any mother by telling them they can’t do something. I wasn’t raised like that.

Child Facilities: What's available at Westquay?

78

Going shopping with young members of the family can be extremely stressful, what with them running around and wondering off. However, by using the Westquay initiatives provided, this can be avoided and your experience will definitely make it worth coming back. words Charlotte Walter photography Tash Noel

Child Safe Scheme

I

t is incredibly important to Westquay that all children and young adults are made to feel safe and secure at all times. All the shopping centre staff have been successfully trained to ensure this is enforced by offering a place of security and protection to those who lose or have been parted in some way from their parents or guardians.

These include: Pushchairs to hire (from Shop mobility) - Baby change facilities - Feeding room - Bottle warmer for hire

push chairs for your young children around Westquay, there are wide parking spaces on levels 1, 2 and 3 in the Blue H block of the Podium Car Park. This will give you more room and is far safer than if you were to park on other levels of the car park.

To use these facilities, there is a £20 deposit that is mandatory.

Free Wristbands

Breastfeeding welcome

At Westquay, wristbands are provided if you need them and can be collected from the Customer Service Desk. All wristbands have a mobile number on them, which is the easiest and most efficient way in helping a child that is lost. Not only ideal for shopping centres, they are excellent for any other day trips or journeys you may take. Being bright, waterproof and strong, these wristbands are excellent in any distressing social situations.

If you are a breastfeeding mother, you want to feel comfortable and know that you can breastfeed wherever is necessary for the baby. Westquay take part in the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme. This allows you to get on and relax with feeding your baby with no hassle or worries about what other people might be thinking. It is designed to make you feel more comfortable which is exactly what Westquay wants your experience to be.

If you would like any more information regarding the wristband scheme, there are leaflets available at the Customer Service Desk, Upper Shopping. Another option is to ring 02380 336828. Child Friendly Services available from Westquay Westquay are passionate in making sure that there are friendly services for young children to make experiences less stressful and hassle free.

Safety in the Centre Westquay want the centre to be as safe and secure as possible. To help them with this, if you have a child that is either in a pram or a push chair, use the lifts available rather than escalators or stairs. It is far safer for the child and for those trying to get around the centre, particularly on busy days. Parking For those of you who will be using buggies or

When eating at a restaurant in Westquay, it is important that young children, particularly babies are safe and can be attended to easily. All the restaurants and cafés on the eating level provide highchairs and some have changing facilities and bottle warming if necessary. Many of the restaurants also hold kids’ parties if you are looking for somewhere that your young child can celebrate their birthday.

Family Fun When you hear about, or look at Westquay online, the centre looks like it only provides eating, drinking and shopping facilities. However, there is more than meets the eye such as: Build-a-Bear workshop – many children’s parties are held here and our fun for children of all ages. Depending on recent cinema releases, there are also special offers on specific characters at different times of the year.

Anyone for a sit-down?

words Charlotte Walterwv

As we get older shopping becomes much more of an effort. Especially in a shopping complex as big and diverse as Westquay! From catching the bus or parking your car to lugging bags around each of the shops; by the end of it you'll definitely be needing a cuppa and a good book or magazine.

There are plenty of places in Westquay that offer a place for you to sit, relax and have a moment to think about where you are going next. There are three Costa Coffee shops throughout Westquay. One on the Food Terrace; one inside Next (perfect if you want a break from clothes shopping) and a very convenient one on Lower Shopping – right next to the bus stops. Costa Coffee offers a wide range of food and beverages, also the friendly staff makes your visit even more relaxing. There’s a Waterstones next to the Costa (on Lowe Shopping) which will be perfect for those who want to get straight into their new books. There are numerous stores in Westquay, so after having a little rest at one of the many coffee shops you should definitely visit a few.

Everyone loves a bit of a Next shop, whether you want to update your wardrobe or find some new homeware there’s so much choice. They sell a range of quality products that last and are excellent value for money. You can shop for comfort, work and even casual weekend clothes and shoes in Next, so you definitely won’t be stuck for choice. Also Next have their own range of affordable, yet, incredible fragrances and beauty products which are perfect for gifts, or even a treat for yourself.

M&S Marks and Spencer’s is located on Level 2, a little hidden away, but once you get there you will soon realise that the two floors of homeware, clothing and food is totally worth the visit. This store offers great value for its products and is loved by many.
