Celebrating 50 Years of Southampton
Southampton Becomes a City. Southampton is a city with a rich and colourful history, with evidence suggesting inhabitants since the Stone Age. We’ve survived civil wars and numerous invasions creating a wealth of cultural and historic importance. This year we celebrate 50 years since the town was declared a city in 1964. A charter of queen Elizabeth the second created the City of Southampton on February 24th, 1964.

Southampton - 1980’s
Keeping it retro in the 1980’s a time of big shoulder pads and even bigger change. The world is swept with Cabbage Patch Dolls, the new york stock exchange experiences black Monday and Princess Diana and Prince Charles tie the knot. Here’s what was happening in the city of Southampton in the 80’s.

Southampton - 1970’s Southampton becomes a nonmetropolitan district in 1974.
In 1982 the remains of Henry VIII’s flagship, the Mary Rose was recovered from the bottom of the Solent, where it had been since 1545.

From 1977 - 2001 the Whitbread Around the World Yacht race held in Southampton Ocean Village.

BAA purchase site of Southampton Airport and start £27 Million redevelopment. 1991
Grand Harbour Hotel welcomed its first guests in 1994 and is now celebrating 20 years of service.
WestQuay Shopping centre opened September 2000.

A Snapshot of the Future of Southampton Over the last 50 years the City of Southampton has grown and developed into a land mark. 2014 marks the year of the biggest change for the city as major developments are put into motion that will see a £3 billion redevelopment and investment. This redevelopment will bring countless new jobs and business opportunities to our forever evolving city that spreads from the existing city centre to the Docks.
There are a believed five million outbound trips a year from Southampton, as a result plans are underway to create the Station Quarter and Western Gateway. A space that aims to showcase the best of Southampton to new visitors with the addition of yet more retail and business opportunities against the back drop of the waterfront, this is believed to create an exciting arrival experience as well as a much needed redevelopment of the train station themselves.
Already under construction the city plans to expand Southampton’s cultural quarter by creating a mass of new creative spaces. This will include a contemporary gallery, media/ film facilities, performing arts spaces that will consist of two auditoria a dance studio and several educational spaces. There will also be the addition of 38 comfortable apartments and seven retail/restaurant units.
Station Quarter
The City centre is already known as the go to place for any shopaholic with WestQuay housing all your favourite high-street brands.It is already believed to attract 17 million shoppers a year. However, this is set to grow with plans for the construction of a £90 million expansion that will see the addition of a new cinema, 15 new restaurants and shops, residential tower, a hotel and additional office space.
The Cultural Quarter
Southampton waterfront will also receive a face list with plans to revitalise with the addition of waterfront attractions, leisure facilities and speciality shops. The £400 million redevelopment that will transform the existing Mayflower Park into a celebration of Southampton’s maritime spirit and showcase just why this is a brilliant city to live, work and study in.
