So into February then, the diets abandoned, the gym membership fees still clocking up, but strangely something comes up that is more important, oh and you couldn’t get there because of the snow – been there, done that! But its not all bad, at least we have Shrove Tuesday to look forward to – yes you can enjoy those pancakes now that the diet is out of the way. We also have Valentines Day this month. Did you know that its historic origins appear to date back to ancient Roman times? Along the way, there were a number of martyrs with the name of Valentine whose exploits were loosely connected with something romantic or that they met their untimely end on February 14th. It was not until the mid 12th century when the writings of Geoffrey Chaucer are widely taken to be the first linking of St Valentine’s Day to romantic love; but it was in the early 1600’s when St Valentine’s Day was made popular by one William Shakespeare who mentions it in Ophelia’s lament in Hamlet: “To-morrow is Saint Valentine’s day, all in the morning betime, and I a maid at your window, to be your Valentine.” The mid 17th century saw the passing of ‘love notes’ on the day which became the beginnings of the tradition for Valentines cards. Another notable year must be 1929 when Al Capone allegedly orchestrated the now famous Valentines Day Massacre in Chicago. Not that it has become over commercialised mind you, but in 2009, it was estimated that $14.7 billion (£9.2 billion) was spent in retail sales in the United States alone. One last staggering fact, an estimated 1 billion St Valentine’s Day cards will be sent worldwide this year. So there you go 2000 years of progress. Canada Common, close to West Wellow, is an area of open heath and grassland, broken up by great clumps of yellowflowering gorse bushes and a few areas of lazily leaning fir trees. As you stand at the edge of the common it crosses the mind about which direction to head! It does not matter as it is a walk of aimless meanderings across a pretty area of countryside.
My feet headed out in a sort of diagonally left direction, aim didn’t matter, as I now needed to walk off a hearty lunch. The ground underfoot was soggy, bordering on swamp, across terrain that is properly called ‘dry heathland’, but my wellies kept my feet dry and warm clothing kept a bitter and sharp wind at bay. Within just a couple of hundred squelching footsteps the common opened out into a really lovely view of open swathes of New Forest that led the eye across gently rolling hills to distant woodland. The chill wind and grey, overcast sky did nothing to damage the wonderful view; it is not a landscape that can be described with huge superlatives, but it is pretty and a bit like a friendly mongrel, it stays at your side and you always enjoy its company. If we do get some snow however, there is no doubt it will become very picturesque! It has been many years since I enjoyed exploring the expanses of Canada Common and Wellow Common. They run side by side, but this was one of the few times I actually walked them. Accompanying me on this windy January day was the pretty song of the robin, seemingly from every bush and tree, and the distant bellowing of cattle that seemed to drift on the wind from a nearby farmyard. Blackbirds, almost in tumbling flight because of the wind, fluttered to and from the gorse bushes To avoid a particularly puddle strewn and boggy area I cut between two gorse bushes, both filled with bright yellow flowers that would brighten the dullest of days, and disturbed a young donkey feeding off the harsh and thorny plant. Eating the vicious looking plant may look like hard work but during the winter the ponies and donkeys do feed off the gorse and it is good for them. This little fellow was daubed in splashes of brown and cream colouring and with a fringe that made his already cute demeanour 9…

even more of a picture. Mother approached with an almost angry look on her face, until she saw my camera and then like a true pro she stood and posed similar to an experienced model working hard for the best shot in front of the lens. A pair of horse riders trotted by and, in the distance, a cock crowed and the cow’s mooing seemed to be even louder, almost in complaint of the lateness of the cock’s alarm call. My walk meandered across the heath, the sights, sounds and deepening water all that changed my direction and for close to three hours, until the rain began again, I happily explored the open expanses of the common. The only pause was while I watched and photographed the donkeys; as friendly as they are though, please do not pet them, or the Forest ponies, as it encourages them to approach people near roads and may increase the chance of accidents; just enjoy watching them. Despite the size of the area it is not much of a place for solitude as dog walkers, families and locals are always criss-crossing the open spaces and enjoying the freedom. The heath and grassland form part of the New Forest and is designated by Natural England as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and is also a protection area for the conservation of wild birds. Apart from the donkeys, my favourite sighting of the day was a chubby little Goldcrest that flitted and fed in a gorse bush just a few feet away from me. Despite the greyness of the day and the cold wind it was a wonderful way to spend a few hours out in the fresh air and exploring an area of the Forest I had not visited for a few years. Add to that the fact I had now found a new, for me, hostelry to visit and work my way through the menu it ended up being pretty well near a perfect day.
Please Note: Feeding of the Forest animals by the public is against the law and can harm them. Feeding ponies and donkeys teaches them bad habits. It encourages them to pester other people and can cause them to become aggressive. Even stroking ponies is dangerous – they may look friendly but they can bite and kick, especially mares with foals. The Rock, formerly the Rockingham Arms, is signposted from the main A36 road to Salisbury; at the roundabout at West Wellow turn left into the tiny hamlet of Canada. If you are using the pub/restaurant facilities they are happy for you to leave the car in their car park and enter the common through their paddock gate. Such is the weather that as the rain continued I sat in a hostelry eating a glorious lunch instead of taking the planned walk, and this regular walking section of Solent Life almost ended up as a restaurant review. The rain eventually ceased and lunch at ‘The Rock’ ended, so I donned the Hunter wellies and walked to Canada…

Many of the wedding traditions which we now take for granted have a basis in history and folklore, from picking the wedding dress, its colour, the luck or misfortune that it can bring, to the wearing of the veil. Even the flowers at a wedding have strong significance; they were introduced to cover the smell of the bride with her posy, and probably the congregation at the ceremony as well, because of the early tradition with spring weddings the guest list would not have washed throughout the winter months. The veil can trace its origins back to those worn by Roman brides as it was thought it would hide the bride and disguise and protect her from evil spirits. Brides it would seem were particularly good targets for those malevolent spirits and many of the traditions were to ward off their attentions. The gowns worn by the bridesmaids, for example, were similar to those of the bride to confuse the spirits and act as decoys. Nowadays the veil is more about adding a little mystery to the proceedings, so the groom can unveil his bride’s face; but is also worn in association with modesty and chastity. The bride remains veiled during some Eastern ceremonies and the groom is not allowed to see the her face until the ceremony is completed; while in some Jewish weddings the ritual is that the groom ensures that the bride is his intended before he then places the veil over her face. It is common knowledge in our western culture that it is unlucky for the groom to see the bride in her dress before she walks up the aisle; but it is not so well known that it was considered unlucky for the bride to make her own wedding dress or that she should not wear her entire outfit before the wedding day; this meant some brides leaving just one final stitch on the dress undone until it is time to leave for the wedding; only then is the outfit finished by adding that last stitch! Chinese brides, through the centuries, have traditionally worn a bright-red silk dress with intricate gold embroidery, known as the qipao. They were elegant, loose and high necked gowns that swept down to the ground, so as only the bride’s head, hands and toes were exposed. In wealthier families it would be the normal for the bride to change her gown several times through the long rituals and feasting to show off that family’s wealth. Meanwhile on a summer’s evening in Mexico the bride’s dress would depend on her religion and could be anything from a simple white cotton dress to the very colourful and embroidered huipil, which is a loose brocaded blouse worn by Maya women and which they weave themselves after praying to the saints. Many also wear the Spanish inspired mantilla veils and the bride would often sew three ribbons, yellow, blue and red, into her undergarments to symbolize food, money and passion. In North Africa, Moroccans usually celebrate weddings on a Sunday toward the end of the harvest when there is plenty of food for the feast. The wedding dress varies depending on the region but they have one thing in common, colour! In fact lots of colour and all for good reason – including yellow to scare away 21…

evil and green to bring good luck. As part of the preparation for the day, the bride and her wedding planners, or negaffa, would hold a henna party. This is the intricate and beautiful art of applying temporary tattoos on their hands and feet with, of course, the bride’s being the most intricate and stunning. In India the gown is a sari made of silk embroidered with gold thread; with colours depending on the region, the silk is red or white with a red border or a combination of yellow, green and white. In Korea a lime-green wonsam or hwarrot is worn over the traditional wedding dress, or hanbok, and are embroidered with flowers and butterflies then banded with red to symbolise heaven; indigo, for the earth; and yellow for humanity. The bride’s hands are covered in white, the symbol of respect. Back in our own culture brides have not always worn white, Queen Victoria when she married her Prince Albert made that popular, but in ancient times it was more likely the bride would wear bright colours to reflect the joy of the occasion. Even so white dresses did not signify purity until the church tagged them with that label. There are many and varied traditions from around the world connected to the wedding and the clothes worn. In Cypriot and Greek weddings the custom is to pin money on the bride and groom, the guests wait for the bride’s family to start it off, next close relatives, then friends; sometimes pinning the notes together; or even pinning one end to the bride and the other to the groom, further joining them. The Greek bride also tucks a sugar cube in her glove to sweeten the union. According to Hindu beliefs rain on your wedding day is good luck; while some western cultures believe that same rain is unlucky. In Holland it is traditional to plant a tree outside the home of the newlyweds as a symbol of fertility while Finnish brides traditionally carry a pillowcase from door to door, collecting gifts; an older married man would often go with her to symbolise a long marriage. Whatever your traditions are be thankful you are not from the Zulu nation; traditionally Zulu weddings are marked by energetic dance-offs between the bride and groom’s families. Many Zulu brides change into traditional tribal clothing after the church wedding and in a further tradition the groom’s family slaughters a cow to welcome the bride; the bride then places money inside the stomach of the cow to symbolize that she is now part of that family! With spring weddings now nearing reality from the longedplanned dreams many would prefer the tradition of ancient Rome where a marriage was not legal until the couple kissed. That kiss was considered a legal bond necessary to seal all contracts and it goes without comment that most brides and their new husbands would prefer that to seal their loving nuptials. Drive along almost any country lane and you will see, sitting at the end of a long curving driveway, the stunning country house; elegant, sturdy and with wide vistas of the surrounding countryside. Inside the house, with its sweeping staircase, ornate furnishings and portraits of long since deceased ancestors sits the country gent and his wife. He, in garish coloured cord trousers, she in twin set and pearls and with both looking out of the huge windows at the staff as they tend the extensive gardens...

coast | country That may be the picture from country life of years gone by but the reality of owning and keeping these architectural treasures can be one of crumbling buildings and owners struggling to keep these homes alive for future generations. Recently Solent Life was invited to a beautiful country home, Hill Place, and spoke with the current incumbent, Rebecca Dobson, who explained that it was not all rose gardens and attractive gazebos for those with a life in the country. “It is a privilege, living in a home like this, but it does come with its pluses and minuses,” she explained. “We do live in a wonderful house set in wonderful surroundings but it is real hard work to keep it going.” Rebecca does look the part of lady of the manor, dressed in clothes that suit the surroundings; but do not let looks fool you! She is a woman on a mission, someone determined to keep this house and its surroundings alive and functional for the next generation of her family, and a place where everyone can share in its beauty and history. The house itself is kept well away from modern intrusion, no motorways can be seen from its large bay windows and no housing estates encroach into the nearby stunning Hampshire scenery of farmland and woods. “Originally five farms would have kept the house going with the rental income but now all those farms have gone, the estate was broken up back in 1916,” Rebecca continued. “The house was originally built between 1791 and 1801 and the man who built it, Richard Goodlad, inherited the land from his uncle, a naval captain. Richard went to India at the age of 16 to work for the East India Company. Over the years, while living there, his two brothers and his new wife died and so he retired to this house.” The estate was sold off in 1916 and the house was 28…

purchased by Rebecca’s husband Will’s family in 1977. “They were looking for a family home and even for that time it was cheap, just £65,000, but it was not in a good state of repair. Nobody wanted big country houses in the 1970s, it was out of fashion.” “From the age of 16 my husband knew that one day the house would be his responsibility, when he saw his grandfather write a large cheque for the heating bill; he also knew from then that it would be a burden! “It is a huge responsibility to keep a house like this going, but the house got under his skin a very long time ago,” she said. “A house, and home, such as this does have a soul and a heart and we feel it, you do not own a house like this, you become its caretaker. Over the years and decades the house has been bashed about but it has always fought back – she is a grand old lady that should be saved and cherished. “We really do not own it, it is now held in trust and it is our responsibility as ‘caretakers’ to ensure the old lady survives,” Rebecca added. To save such a house and get it fit for use costs a great deal of money, as well as the commitment of Rebecca and Will. “To just make it compliant to hold weddings cost £10,000 and then the fees for the year will be a further £85,000-£100,000. It is more likely these days that houses like this will be bought by rich people, or corporations, who often don’t appreciate them and may turn them into boutique hotels; this often takes the heart out of lovely houses like Hill Place. “We have kept this house as a beautiful family home that now lends itself to a romantic wedding and function venue with stunning views. The mini-grandeur does not matter, this is still very much a family home and has a lovely feel to it; and I love the fact that it is almost hidden in the heart of the Hampshire countryside.” From the country lane, a short distance from Wickham, it is a short curved drive that leads to the attractive house. A few steps up to the double front doors, and as visitors enter, they are greeted by a large entrance hall lined with classic portraits. Leading from the hall, further doorways open to a beautiful library, a music room with grand piano and a drawing room with amazing views across field, farmland and rolling Hampshire hills. It was the modern phenomena of TV that helped save this grand building for the future. “We were recommended to the producers of the TV programme, Country House Rescue and since it was televised it has been a massive boon to us. It was a lot of fun having the crew here but it did put us under a lot of pressure. We have been amazed at what we have achieved following the six months of filming. “It gave us huge confidence having them behind us and there was also a great deal of business advice being given behind the scenes and off camera as well as during filming. It was amazing

the coverage we were receiving with over two million viewers at one point; the publicity from that was obviously very good, but it was also about our lives and how we lived here and so people got to know us.” They opened the doors for weddings on the 17th November 2009. “We held a small launch party and had a few friends and businesses in and told them to just use it for whatever, and from that function alone we booked two weddings, and that was in the midst of a recession! “We are not a conference centre; we are a special, romantic, family house with a homely feel that just seems to suit weddings and small private functions or as a weekend break. We have now completed refurbishing the bedrooms and so we are also a wonderful retreat for friendly get-togethers and functions. We offer a complete service as we have the contacts for everyone needed to make this work as a venue and so we are totally flexible and with only two rules; respect our neighbours, who are not that close, and try not to break anything.” Rebecca admits that being responsible for something like this is a contradiction. “Living here makes you feel humble and yet honoured; privileged and yet pressured. We love it here, we really do and we get enormous pleasure from seeing other people enjoy it and watching the smiles broaden on their faces as they wander around.
“One visitor said of the house;
‘it gives you an enormous hug when you walk in’,
and I could not agree more.”

ARTIST
Perusing through a local gallery recently some exciting animal sculptures caught my eye; a six inch high polar bear and a black, gruff looking warthog among them. They were a little rough in their conception but that only served to give their bodies a realistic texture and although small versions of the real animal it was as if they could, at any moment, move and become aware of the people walking past them. The obvious question of who the sculptor was; was never allowed to escape as I was stopped by the assistant in the shop lifting up a pair of wonderful animal drawings and explaining they were by the same artist. We had found a real talent for this month’s Solent Life artist review. “I have always loved art as my father painted but it was something I had not taken too seriously until I neared retirement.” The artist was Anne Swatton and she was a charming lady who shared her armchair with a scowling terrier, whilst I had a sleepy Jack Russell for company when we visited her at her Hill Head home. “Like many of the artists you feature I did like art at school but it was always something I wanted to learn in readiness for when I retired, then, when that day arrived I was ready to start getting busy on my art.” “Painting obviously came first and I learned the techniques after joining in with an art group,” Anne continued with her story. “My favourite was watercolours, landscapes and such but mostly I enjoyed painting animals, both wild and domestic. The animals have long been a love of mine as I have always kept dogs and ridden horses.” That love of painting animals was further enhanced when Anne became one of the founder members of the Marwell International Wildlife Art Society (MIWAS) and she is now the Deputy Chair of the Society. Although self taught Anne admits she has inherited some of her father’s skills, some of his work depicting life as a POW in Poland during the Second World War, can be seen in the RAMC museum in Aldershot. She also gained inspiration, and her love of wildlife, from her grandparents in Yorkshire where she spent 32…

long periods as a child and they encouraged her to take notice of the wildlife around them. From her father she has gained a fine insight into the world of art while from her grandparents she has taken a passionate love of the animal world. So, how did she begin the sculpting side of her talent? “I took a workshop in sculpting from the renowned sculptor Margot Dent whose work has a great demand throughout the world,” she replied, “She was at one of our fund raising events at MIWAS and asked me if I had ever tried sculpting, then within a fortnight I was joining in workshops she was giving!” Was the natural finish to her three-dimensional work something that she preferred? “I don’t like my work to be too polished and that was something that Margot encouraged. I like to give my animals character, especially in their faces. It was really hard at first but she was a great teacher. “Now, although I am retired, my main problem is still time constraints,” continued Anne, “I may be retired but I still have a very busy and packed life and fitting in time for my art work is always tricky; that said I love what I do and will keep on doing it as the work and its results are so special to me. My favourite is to work in ‘black-clay’, which actually comes out as a really dark brown, but my studio is also my kitchen and dark clay and cream units just don’t seem to match each other, so it takes me a long time to clean up after a session.” With two such distinct sides to her talent and work as an artist we had to wonder how she chose which to work on; was it a mood thing? “The two sides of my work, the painting and drawing and the sculpting never seem to cross over; I have the images, I work from photos, and that puts the picture of what

I want in my mind. The main thing is that I have to work hard at both mediums; my work is done in such fine detail so when I am working it is quite intense as I need to get it right, but at the same time I find it really relaxing. I just lose myself in my work; you have to work hard at art but at the same time it still has to be a light-hearted endeavour.” Anne’s sculptures are free and loose, whereas her paintings are sure-footed and precise but she sees no difference in the way she works on the two different mediums. “If I am praised for my work it is lovely and of course I enjoy it, but I do not have a favourite between the two mediums, clay or canvas, I love both. I am no more proud of one than the other but I am still amazed at how well the sculptures have been received and how well they sell.”

Around 800 members float their boat by heading down to the Solent to race and potter at Hill Head Sailing Club which was formed in 1926; it’s a volunteer run club and new members are always welcomed. Taking the bullet is what all racing dinghy sailors yearn for and to a lay person this may seem a little dangerous but it harks back to the gun shot when the winner of a race crosses the finish line, mostly nowadays though it’s a horn that blares out across the water, which sounds a little safer. The Hill Head club is classed as an RYA Champion Club and this tag outlines the commitment club members have on running training courses in order to develop new sailor’s skills in dinghy sailing. The Club has a range of members from cadets, individuals through to families. A more recent trend, with a high proportion of families joining, is children encouraging their parents into the sport rather than the other way around. Parents get the bug after seeing their children being active, confident, and developing new skills out on the water. With so much nannying going on in the modern world a parent isn’t able to shout at the offspring on how to do this, or try harder, or even be careful, because the young sailor is out far away floating and sailing on the water. Scary some may say; but the youngster is learning and making their own decisions on how to approach a wave or when to adjust the sail. Many parents marvel at their child’s confidence but rest assured the club has a fleet of support ribs accompanying the young sailors in case assistance is needed. 36…

The club has a very notable roll of honour with a good number of world, national and regional champions, and now the Olympics are beckoning with John Pink in the RYA Olympic Squad for the 49er super-fast skiff dinghy; as well as some juniors that are making all the right steps to be at the 2020 Olympics. The club welcomes new members and holds a visitor’s day in the early summer which is open to anyone who is not a member to try a boat. The club over the years has built up a number of club boats which are used generally by new members until they get a feel for what type of dinghy they would like to buy for themselves. The club has a range for young and old. The first fully independent class is the RS Tera a modern fast boat for 8 to 14 year olds then comes the Topper. After this the RS Feva gives a chance to team up with the sailing buddies you have made and go sailing together and then when the young sailors are fully advanced; take mum and dad out in one of the clubs RS Visions. The club encourages recreational sailing individually or in a small group with a day sail to Wooton Creek, for instance. It also puts on an impressive array of races which attract anything from 20 to 70 boats at any one time, these are run with support rib safety cover and the race team, they are all

part of the volunteer duty that all members take part in. The racing scene is the part that focuses the mind and athleticism of young and old; with youngsters like Chloe Barr who is now a member of the RYA National Training Squad combining many hours of sailing and fitness training to achieve her goal. Luke Morrison, Hill Heads Sailing’s VC told Solent Life “A clear example of how the club provides the facilities to make it happen is Billy Vennis Ozanne. He learnt to sail on the Solent just in front of the club house when he was 6, he progressed by hiring one of the club’s RS Tera fleet dinghies and took part in club races. By the age of 10 he was ready for the commitment of his own dinghy, he chose the same boat which is locally built in Romsey by RS Sailing. This gave him the opportunity to take the next step and sail much more often. After not being able to sail for 9 months due to other commitments he started back, and with coaching he embarked on some regional sailing races. Mike Lee, a coach who has nurtured some successful talent, felt Billy had the ingredients to progress and the sailing club and most importantly the Solent choppy waves provided the perfect training ground during the winter off season; if perhaps a little chilly sometimes!” With the knowledge gained and hours of practice Billy started entering national competitions although sometimes frustrating results were achieved, as he was sailing against National Squad sailors, by early June he reached an amazing 3rd at the National Championships. Luke continued with Billy’s story, “He attended the world championships in Italy, competing against an international fleet of around 80 sailors. On the last leg, of the last lap, of the last race of ten, Billy managed to position himself to beat a South African by one point to take that cherished bullet and to be crowned RS Tera World Champion. This is just the start of his journey, he is now getting involved with the RS Feva and sailing with a buddy. The competition in this class of boat is just as fierce, so he has his work cut out for his 2020 objective of an Olympic sail.” 37…

Adults fair just as well with healthy participation in advance training by Ian and Kerry Morgan among others. These two are high level Laser sailors, who both collected the regional Southern Grand Prix series cups in 2012 and give time up in assisting others to achieve success. The club also organises on average 10 events where sailors from other clubs can compete against each other. Sailing is often described as chess on the water with a pretty good gym work out thrown in on a moving apparatus for good measure, after all this activity the chance to relax and have a drink and a bowl of soup over-looking the scenic Solent seascape from the clubs balcony is a pretty good way to unwind.

A year ago in the pages of Solent Life we dined out and reviewed The Wine Bar & Bistro in Bishops Waltham, since then they have changed chefs and have now in the New Year re-launched the eatery as Num8er Restaurant and Bar – so, to be fair to our readers we felt it was time to check them out once again. As the saying goes ‘if it aint broke don’t fix it’, then why when you have a successful formula would you change things? Restaurant owner Amanda Morgan explained, “We have been here just over a year now and with our chef moving on, it felt like time for a change and a fresher way of doing things. We have a wonderful new chef, Jonothan Pope, and a cracking new menu; I think you will be pleased.” Also as they say, ‘the proof of the pudding, etc’ … A classic combination, scallops and black pudding, the scallops so soft and warm the mouth greets them like a favourite friend, the black pudding slightly coarse on tongue and taste bud – perfectly prepared. Not so classic, and a starter that Amanda discovered on a visit to South Africa; duck liver Brulee parfait served with warm ciabatta and tangerine oil. It looks like a classic crème Brulee, so the brain is already thinking dessert not starter, then the knife cracks through the caramelised crust into the creamy heart, a gentle aroma of duck liver drifts noseward and still the mouth is expecting sweet not savoury! It then comes as a real surprise to the senses when the first meaty taste drifts across the palate; this is a delicious, innovative and wonderful dish; different and not deep, or overpowering, in flavour but a superb starter. While waiting on my main course Amanda told of a new service for early diners. “From 5.30 till 7 o’clock each evening we have a Supper Club, which has a shortened menu that often features dishes that are not on the main list of food available.” On that menu there were delicious concoctions such as sweet and sour chicken with sesame noodles for openers and artichoke stuffed tortellini or cod with pesto crust for mains. The Supper Club menu is also superb value with a two course meal for two people and with a bottle of wine for just £28.50 or a three course for two at £32.50. No 8 no longer opens at lunchtime and in the future will be looking at laying on wedding breakfasts but for now, the 40…

attention to detail with the evening food is as good as it ever was with fine presentation, and as it turned out some amazing flavours as well. Something not often seen on menus in recent times is rabbit, but with a rustic style restaurant in the country village of Bishops Waltham, it does seem to suit. I like the slightly course texture and gentle gamey taste of rabbit and No 8 serve it with cacciatore, pappardelle pasta and olive oil. Cacciatore means hunter and this would be a wonderful dish for such an expedition; a topping that is a mixture of tomato, herbs and olives with the slight saltiness of the olive matching perfectly with the meat. My favourite main course though was a dish that sounded amazing and then lived up to its billing. Pulled lamb shoulder with a sticky pomegranate glaze and served with sauté potatoes and fresh, crisp vegetables – and it looked even better than it sounded! Dining out should be a little bit of showbiz, it is entertainment after all, and the sight and aromas that hit as the dish was placed in front of me deserved a standing ovation of their own, a little like the conductor stepping onto the podium at a classical concert; he gains applause from the audience because they expect a great performance from the maestro. Well this lamb dish performed incredibly well. First the overture of crisp fresh vegetables, accompanied by cubes of delicately flavoured sauté potatoes; and then the crescendo of flavour that was the lamb. The dark, sticky coating parts easily as the fork is dragged across the flaky meat, then the sweetness of the pomegranate glaze plays across the mouth before the delicious clean and lean lamb complete the composition. It was a glorious medley of amazing flavours and textures; a great performance of a dish that can only be described as stunning. Chef explained that where possible all ingredients are sourced locally, the meat is Hampshire reared and for many of

the other products, which could be sourced cheaper elsewhere, they go to the businesses in the village. It is very comforting to know that the chef can track all of his produce. My Crème Brulee was brilliant. I have a dislike of classic dishes being ‘messed’ with so was a little nervous when the menu stated the Brulee would be infused with blood orange. I need not have worried because the orange merely gave the creamy base a lovely, lazy citrus hit; that was once the hard, and thick, caramelised topping had been broken through. It was garnished with small shreds of orange peel that had blackened with the heat when the sugar topping was melted and the dish looked great, was fun to eat and tasted perfect for a meal ending. It was a pleasing experience to return to a restaurant that we had highly recommended and discover that not only had standards remained high but that the quality and choice of dishes had in fact improved. Factors such as finding the right study programme, working out transport costs and college success rates are just some of the items to consider. It’s important to know that, whilst making the right decision may seem like a daunting prospect – after all they’ll be spending a few years at college – colleges make efforts to help young people to make an informed choice as possible. From holding Open Evenings to taster days, young people are able to check out what each college has to offer. Think of amateur theatre and what comes to mind is a church hall with inadequate seating and lighting, and an audience consisting of friends and relatives of the players. Not so Titchfield Festival Theatre; it is unique in owning not one but two theatres and both the members and the patrons agree that there is nothing amateur about this company. Words by Fiona Cooke Images by Tim Gulliford Titchfield Festival Theatre, or TFT as they tend to be known, came into being in 2001 and have woven the story of their existence into the cultural history of Titchfield. Some would argue that maybe this story, which has several threads, starts in the 16th Century with none other than Shakespeare himself. The details of Shakespeare’s life are sketchy, and there are none for his “Lost Years” between 1585 and 1592, but there is some conjecture as to his whereabouts and one well founded theory has it that he was in Titchfield for some of this time. All who live in this area know of Titchfield Abbey, which was founded in 1232. In 1537 Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries and Thomas Wriothesley became the owner of the Abbey and the Titchfield Estate. Subsequently he became the 1st Earl of Southampton and built his country residence, Place House, on the site of the Abbey. At the time of Shakespeare’s lost years Place House was the country residence of the 3rd Earl of Southampton, and we know of their acquaintance as Shakespeare dedicated his first two published poems to the Earl. Furthermore it is believed that a restored cottage built close to the Abbey in 1447 was a grammar school, and one theory is that Shakespeare was a school master in the country during his lost years.......put it all together and whilst there is no proof, it is wonderful to think that maybe, just maybe, The Great Bard once lived in the area and walked in the Great Barn.....which brings us to another thread, and this one is a bit more recent. Kevin Fraser is a man who knows his Shakespeare. Having done a Post Grad in directing and acting Shakespeare plays he moved to this area discovered its history and, as he says; “There was Shakespeare, in all his glory. I couldn’t believe my luck.” By chance Kevin met two local men who shared his love of Shakespeare and history and, to cut a long story short, Titchfield Festival Theatre was born. During its early years TFT performed

at the Titchfield Abbey site – and gained a reputation for great acting along with strong support from local residents. Subsequently TFT lost the Abbey as a venue and had a couple of almost lost years in temporary venues until 2009, when it obtained a lease at the most unusual of locations: a factory unit in St Margaret’s Lane at Titchfield. The Company set about transforming the interior into a first class 200 seat theatre and continued to stage award winning plays...until another twist of fate landed a second, seemingly “meant to be” venue in their collective lap. The Great Barn, in Mill Lane in Titchfield, was built in 1409 and would have been part of the Titchfield Abbey Estate, and subsequently the estate of the Earls of Southampton. The reason for its existence is unknown but, as it is amongst the largest in the country, supposition has it that it was built by Henry V to house his army prior to embarking to France and the Battle of Agincourt. ...and as we all know Shakespeare happened to write a play about Henry V.....so the link is there again. Fast forward to 2011 and the Great Barn was unused. The owners approached Kevin suggesting that TFT may like to use their barn as a venue. Initially unaware of the connection, and with an established venue, Kevin was dismissive until he joined the dots and realised it was THAT Great Barn! So without much ado about nothing (!) TFT acquired The Great Barn as a second venue and the final piece of the story fell into place. The company stages around 16 shows at St Margaret’s Lane every year, with each one running for ten nights. The plays range from those penned by the likes of Alan Ayckbourn and Peter Schaffer, to productions of the works of Dickens and adaptations such as Miracle on 34th Street, which played just before Christmas. Over the year there is something for everyone with
comedies, Hitchcock thrillers and the odd musical. The Great Barn is the venue for the annual Shakespeare Festival, running from 15th May to 5th October, during which the company stage four plays. TFT have also extended an invitation to outside Shakespearean companies and hope that they too will stage their own productions during the festival. One of the reasons TFT came into existence was because of the links which apparently tie Shakespeare to the area. As a charity TFT’s articles of association state that they make public performances, have a theatre, but also perpetuate the theory that Shakespeare was living and working in South Hampshire. They are now establishing The Great Barn as a Shakespearean Theatre. Kevin eloquently says “We are building theatres on a background of Shakespeare and a history of Shakespeare being in this little village. We dream of becoming the next Royal Shakespeare Company.” And they are well on their way. They have up to 200 active members, who range from those that man the bar and build the sets, to the core of 30 to 40 actors and directors. Of these some are retired professionals, some teach at local colleges and some are gifted amateurs. In the last year TFT have had an influx of extremely talented young people, with around 25 youngsters who dedicate much time and hard work into directing and acting in the productions. Indeed the company is invested in encouraging the youth in the area, and stage three or four plays each year from the Youth Theatre they run on Saturday mornings. With over 1,000 patrons drawn from across the area, the company is funded purely from the ticket sales and do not charge a membership fee. TFT also donates 100 tickets at a time to local charities, which get the income from the ticket sales. As

much as they have built a successful theatre company from their own resources, they would welcome sponsorship, as this would help them to develop their dream of making Titchfield a cultural centre in the South. In these days of immediate entertainment from television, computers and other electronic devices, it is easy to dismiss local theatre productions as not being exciting or worth the effort of venturing out. But there is something magical about seeing a play live on stage, and Titchfield Festival Theatre offers the opportunity to become immersed in top rate theatre staged by talented local people who are passionate about their craft. ‘cancer, we’re coming to get you’ Women of all ages everywhere across the Solent Life region, are being urged to make a stand against cancer by entering this year’s Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life; entries for which are now open. Event organisers are issuing the rallying cry ‘cancer, we’re coming to get you’ to mums, daughters, sisters, grandmas and friends, encouraging them to sign up as soon as possible for the annual fund-raising event. Despite the fact that all of us are fully aware of the disease and its devastating consequences, the statistics still shock; for example every hour, nearly five people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East. So, as it has been for the past few years, women are needed to join together as a formidable pink-dressed army; to run and take on cancer at venues across the region such as Southsea Common and Southampton Common. Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is an inspiring women-only series of events which raise millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research. Suzi Dent is Cancer Research UK’s Events Manager for Portsmouth and she told Solent Life, “Come on ladies, please play your part by entering Race for Life in Portsmouth and together, we can hit cancer where it hurts! There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all. It’s fighting talk, and we mean every word we say. Cancer, Portsmouth is coming to get you.” Last year in Portsmouth alone 7444 women took part in Race for Life and in doing so raised a fantastic £424,129. This year, organisers are aiming for 7800 women to stride out to help raise £480,000 for vital research. The men in your life can take part as well; by lining the route and cheering on the thousands of women who will be running, walking and jogging so that they can raise money for the charity or simply remember a loved one who suffered from cancer. Money raised through Race for Life allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research and is helping to save the lives of men, women and children across the South East. Suzi continued, “Women of all ages and levels of fitness take part in Race for Life. They come from different backgrounds and walks of life but they are united by their absolute determination to take on cancer and beat it. “Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer. “Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also to remember those who have been lost to the disease. Participants may be decked out in pink or fancy dress but what’s inescapable is the power and strength that comes from thousands of women joining together to confront cancer. Don’t be fooled by the tutus and tiaras. “Dennis Hall was a legend in his own lifetime;” Michael Ockwell, the new Chief Executive of Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre told Solent Life with regard to his predecessor. “I am not intimidated by his success but am conscious of the fact I am following a man who ran one of the most successful theatres in the country; he is a hard act to follow.”
In his 27 years at the theatre Dennis Hall had taken the popular venue forward to become one of the five top theatrical venues in the UK. “Dennis felt he had taken the Mayflower as far as he could and also felt it was time for a younger person to drive it forward and bring the whole team into the picture,” Michael continued. “People will normally be prepared to take a 40 minute drive to visit a theatre, The Mayflower though, has an audience base from across a much wider area, we even get customers from the London area as it is easier to get to the south coast than it is to get into the West End; on top of that of course, Southampton people also make a conscious choice to come here and enjoy the shows we offer.” We wondered how a new Chief Executive could work toward improving an already successful brand. “I looked at what had already been established at The Mayflower as a programme but then I wanted to re-look at the focus of what we were doing in that we can help shape the cultural future of Southampton; when I applied for this post I knew it was one of the top five theatre jobs in the country!” Michael, a pleasant, approachable man who is truly excited and feeling privileged to be running such a successful venue explained to us, “Developing a community outreach programme is vital; I am intensely keen on bringing youth into the theatre, both on the stage as performers and technicians as well as in the audience. We are a charity and developing a youth programme will help us live up to that status but we also have to keep this wonderful theatre alive and so by giving the younger generations opportunities to be part of it, we will prolong its future “It is my job to supplement and enhance the programme of events that Dennis built. The programme I have inherited is already engaging the audience and I see it as part of my role to extend that audience from the people that currently use the facilities to our future audiences such as those in their twenties and thirties, as well as the young people of the community. “We are all very fortunate to work in a business where we entertain an audience, we get them to sit in the dark for a
couple of hours and have fun; this has to be the best job in the world,” he added. Most of the programme for this year was already booked by Michael’s predecessor. “Dennis left me with around 80% of this year booked so The Mayflower will not have my thumbprint until 2014; but in saying that, I do not want our audiences to notice too much of a difference in the programme. What I do genuinely feel is that I have a job to do as the public face of the theatre and a role in the city of representing this wonderful theatre and its place in the arts. “I also have the task of sustaining and developing the business side of things and as such I am merely a custodian of the Mayflower for its future,” he said with conviction. “The Mayflower is already in a strong position, we will of course be keeping the large scale musicals coming in, but we also have to be more open as a cultural centre for the community.” Is what the boss puts on the stage, what the boss enjoys the most? “You do have to have an eclectic taste but while I have the responsibility for programming I have to respect the fact that it is also a collaborative thing with the rest of the team here. It is also not my job to act as censor, it is my job to bring shows here that there are a demand for, we are in the process of creating our style here artistically, and again that is with the help of the team to work everything together. “My big ambition though is to work with the youth projects both on the stage and in the theatre on the technical side; this will also help us live up to our charitable status by giving young people the chance to develop within the arts.” Two and a half decades down the line when it is maybe time to move on, Michael does admit there is no better or bigger job in theatre than the one he now holds. What would he hope to leave behind as his legacy? “Youth engagement,” he answered quite simply. “We currently have 450,000 people visit this theatre each year, a staggering audience, but my hope would be that with the inclusion of young people I can take that figure past the half a million mark! Our first big youth project is Bugsy Malone later this year and not only will that be wonderful but it is also something we can build on.”

He was previously the Chief Executive of the Grand Opera House in Belfast. Prior to this he was Managing Director for HQ Theatres. We were invited to submit an editorial but we thought we would show you what some of our customers thought! Set within the South Downs National Park, this beautiful natural burial site nestles in a private and tranquil corner of The Sustainability Centre’s 55 acres. Close to East Meon, this southfacing slope offers distant views to the Solent and Isle of Wight. The site itself is a former conifer plantation which is now being cleared to enable the planting of native, broad-leaf species. These trees are planted after a funeral – on, or near the grave, when appropriate. The woodland is being managed to encourage the return of our native flora and fauna. The Earthworks Trust, owners of the site, is a charity which runs The Sustainability Centre. The Centre aims to demonstrate, promote, educate and inspire people to make positive lifestyle changes. Working with people from all walks of life and with differing abilities, they seek to manage the land, charity and businesses as working examples of sustainability. The South Downs Natural Burial Site is a non-profit making organisation which donates all its surplus funds to support the charity. ISA investing doesn’t need to be confusing. With the

Selecting your ISA investment manager is one consideration but regularly reviewing their performance is an equally important factor. Not properly monitoring the performance of your investment manager is akin to driving a car without any rear-view mirrors – you don’t get any warning of what’s coming. February Gardening It was a mild start to the year, which made good conditions for gardeners. If the ground isn’t frozen, you can establish new plants, so prepare for spring growth.

If you’ve planted bulbs, they should be springing up to give your winter garden a lovely lift. You can always add to your bulb display with ready-made planters from the garden centre. Our plant of the month is the romantic Camellia – perfect for Valentine’s Day! Shades range from soft white through to pink and deep red. They are woodland shrubs, so prefer a partially shaded area. As well as being a good evergreen, they’re one of the few plants that provide a big splash of late winter/early spring colour. They are ericaceous (acid-loving) plants, so if you don’t have acid soil, put them in a pot or container of ericaceous soil. Give them a regular ericaceous feed – there are several to choose from at Garsons. Don’t prune roses until next month, as pruning encourages growth and frost can damage new growth. However, now is an ideal time to plant roses. If planting in a position where a rose has grown before, avoid what’s known as replant disease. Get some mycorrhizal fungi from the garden centre. These granules are said to avoid the problem by containing a fungi that help the roots absorb minerals and water. Are you ‘growing your own’ this year? If so, get your onion sets and seed potatoes now. Keep seed potatoes in a cool, light environment while they are being ‘chitted’. This means standing them in open trays in light, bright conditions where they are cool and frost-free, so they start to sprout before planting in March. This is your last chance to plant bare-rooted raspberries. Prune the canes of summer-fruiting types to 10 inches after planting, and prune autumn-fruiting varieties down to ground level.

February is when our starter plants and plug plants arrive at Garsons – plugs are individual cuttings in trays of single ‘plugs’. We’ve eighteen new varieties this year, all selected for their strong performance. They’re a low cost way to grow plants, here’s how to give them the best start: Pop the plant out of its plug and either plant in an individual pot or into a hanging basket or container. They respond well to plenty of sunlight in a heated greenhouse or window sill. Turn containers frequently. Make sure they don’t get too hot on a sunny day, and that they don’t dry out or get too cold at night. Feed regularly with a weak solution of water-soluble fertiliser. Removing 1-2 sets of leaves from each stem may help some varieties produce more flowers. After the last frost they can be hardened off by placing them outside on warm days in shade and shelter. Work up to putting them out in all conditions during the day, then after a couple of weeks they can be left outside to give you months of enjoyment.

Farlington Marshes Nature Reserve is well known for the large flocks of brent geese that visit during the winter months to graze the grass. For residents of Portsmouth and indeed many people living along the Solent these small dark geese are a common sight. It would be easy to think that brent geese are common birds and of no particular interest. In fact the Solent coast is one of the prime areas for this species. Brent geese come in three races two of which come to Western Europe for the winter; our birds in the Solent are of the dark-bellied race. These come to us from breeding grounds in the Siberian high Arctic, some 8000km away and make non-stop flights of up to 3000km in getting to and from us each year. They nest on the ground and benefit for 24 hours of daylight and relatively few resident predators, so nesting in the Arctic does have advantages. However the weather can be unpredictable and the predators there are, mainly Arctic foxes and snowy owls, will eat almost all the goslings in years when there are few of their preferred prey the lemming. In some years no goslings are produced at all and in the last twenty years the population has been declining as there have not been enough young birds surviving to replace the dying adults. Currently about 72,000 dark-bellied brent geese winter in Britain and almost exactly a quarter of these come to the Solent. In a wider context this is about one in ten of all of the dark-bellied brent in the world. Studies of ringed birds have told us a lot about them. They can live for twenty years or more and will return to the same area each winter, in fact they will feed in the same fields year after year. They will stay paired for life and families stay together during their first winter whilst the young learn how to get by in 68…

the world as a goose. In the Solent area we have a large part of the world population of these birds and not distantly on a mudflat but living right in amongst us in our cities and on the shores of our coastal towns. Some fields can have one or even two percent of the world population in them at times and if you visit an area regularly you probably see the same individuals year after year after year. So brent geese might be a familiar sight to most of us living in the Solent area, but they are in no way common, in fact “our” geese are the most approachable and urban living anywhere and a significant part of the world population. So next time you see a flock think of the distance they come to be with us and what a privilege it is to be living where we do. CHILDREN’S CLINIC OPENING The Mayor of Fareham cut the ribbon surrounded by a gaggle of youngsters when the Children’s Clinic within the Stubbington Natural Health Clinic opened last month. The new clinic combines the knowledge and experience of our specialist practitioners to offer support for the many health problems that children face today. SOLENT SNOW Schools were closed, work, for some unreachable; the snow had arrived! The end result however, was perhaps not the carnage reported on the news, but gave the rare chance for sledges to be pulled from the backs of garages and families to get out on the slopes of any hill and have fun. Despite many roads being closed here in the Solent Life region we had been well prepared and it allowed our photographer to get out and about and take some memorable shots of the winter wonderland. So, for those of you who could not get out and join in the laughter and enjoy the wonderful scenery, here are just a few reminders of a weekend of snow.
NEW YEARS EVE Across the Solent Life region revellers cheered in the New Year and here at Solent Life we thought we were duty bound to join in the celebrations and photograph some of our readers having a good time. So, we popped down the local, The Silver Fern in Warsash, and joined pub managers Sharon and Garry who provided music from local blues singer Rob Berry, in seeing in the New Year. We hope you all had a fun and safe time ringing in 2013.
YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR Fifteen year old Jonathan Swann called into our production offices early in the New Year to be awarded with his trophy as the Solent Life Young Photographer of the Year. Through 2012 he had sent in an excellent selection of images and also chose many different subjects to point his camera at. Jonathan is hoping to be accepted on a photographic course at one of the local colleges; they should be proud to have such a talented youngster.

LOCAL YOUNGSTERS JOIN FAT SAM AND DANDY DAN... The Mayflower Theatre say they are looking for young people aged between 10 –18 years of age to make up the company of a production of Bugsy Malone, the culmination of a two-week Summer Youth Project which will be performed on 30th and 31st August on stage at The Mayflower Theatre. Michael Ockwell, Mayflower Theatre’s new Chief Executive told Solent Life, “Developing the next generation of theatregoers is a real passion of mine, and this Summer Youth Project is the ideal vehicle to engage with young people giving them a real connection to professional theatre,” he explained. “I have run projects like this in my previous position at the Grand Opera House in Belfast and it is important to stress that the young people do not need to have had any previous experience of appearing on stage. This is an opportunity to have fun, learn new skills and meet other young people interested in theatre. “We also guarantee a fantastic show with lots of splurge!” Michael added with a mischievous tone. Building on the success of The Mayflower Summer School, which is also returning for a week in August, the Youth Project will be two-weeks of hard work by over 200 local young people alongside professionals from the industry to create a fully-fledged musical on The Mayflower Stage. BUSY BOATS BAY: A brand new indoor family play and explore centre for under 5s - will open on Saturday 23rd March for the Easter school holidays at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport. February is a great month for spotting signs of badger activity at Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve. Badgers constantly use the same routes and so they leave distinctive trails on the ground - if you know where to look! Their footprints in soft mud are also very distinctive - rounded, with 4 or 5 toes visible and long claws on the front feet. Other good signs that badgers are about are the presence of deep scratch marks on the trunks of trees or stiff, wiry hairs caught in barbed wire fences. Below ground, the sows give birth to a litter of 2 or 3 cubs any time from the end of January onwards. The cubs won’t venture out of the sett until they are about 8 weeks old but you may be able to see signs of fresh, new bedding being collected to line the maternity den. Elsewhere on the reserve, the male Great Spotted Woodpecker can clearly be heard in February, hammering on dead trees in order to mark out his territory. Cubs, buds and territorial behaviour Spring must be just around the corner! Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve is an 86 acre reserve located on Sopwith Way, off Swanwick Lane. The reserve is owned by NATS and managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The reserve is open from dawn until dusk for all to enjoy.
