Cycle California

T

he Rowans Hospice is going on the road in the USA in 2015 with a brand new challenge event. Cycle California is an epic challenge from San Francisco to LA taking in the spectacular scenery of the West Coast of America from 6th to 19th October. Already signed up to take part in Cycle California are Hector and Susan, veterans of the Hayling Cycle ride, Hector and Susan met while taking part in the event in 2004. They are both members of the Hayling Cycle Club and have also taken part in similar challenges in Chile and Argentina in the Andes. Hector’s association with The Rowans Hospice began in 2002 when his wife was cared for and died at the Hospice. He has taken part in several fundraising events including the Moonlit Memories Walk, abseil and The Ruby Ride. Susan’s foray into cycling was back in 1998 on a borrowed bike and she put her helmet on back to front. However, she’s literally come a long way since then. Susan said: “I love cycling and it gives you a wonderful insight into a country. We’re both really looking forward to taking on this challenge and it’s a different way to support the Hospice.” For more information on the Cycle California challenge, contact fundraising@rowanshospice.co.uk, call Fundraising on 023 9223 7142 or visit the website www.rowanshospice.co.uk.

Colourful Camellias In the past thirty to forty years Camellias have become one of the most popular spring shrubs in our gardens. It has come a long way since the Victorian times when it was a pampered plant grown only in Orangeries or glasshouses. At this time of year when there is so little else flowering, it is easy to understand why the Camellia is so popular as it gives our gardens early splashes of stunning colours in pink, white or red.

T

here are just a few golden rules to follow, otherwise they are really quite simple to grow and little trouble. They grow particularly well in urban or courtyard gardens and do not mind air pollution or lack of sun. However, they will not tolerate draughts or strong winds, so plant them against a west or north west wall. It is also unwise to plant them facing east as the early sun can easily damage the flower buds if there has been a frost.

If you can find a sheltered position you can grow your Camellias in pots too, which makes it easier if you do not have the right soil conditions. They will only thrive in acid or neutral soil. Now is a good time to plant them, digging in plenty of organic matter such as leaf mould. They need little pruning and if it is necessary make sure you do this straight after flowering. Their roots grow fairly close to the surface so keep them well watered, but not water logged. If we get a prolonged dry spell, try to use rainwater rather than tap, as it contains too much calcium. Longing for some vibrant colour this spring? Why don’t you call into Hambrooks of Titchfield where you will discover some stunning Camellias in a variety of colours? Additionally, they have a good stock of colourful spring bulbs to help you add further instant colour to your garden, patios or window boxes.

Long service award for local resident and Sea Scout volunteer Val Lyons Locks Heath resident Val Lyons has been honored for over 40 years voluntary service to Scouting with 1st Warsash Sea Scout Group.

V

al’s long service medal and certificate of achievement was presented to her by the District Commissioner for Fareham West. Val is known to many for her tireless fund raising and was one of the original members that worked so hard to raise funds and lobby local businesses to gain support for the building of the impressive Sea Scout headquarters in New Road. She has been a regular face at the well attended Warsash Scout Jumble Sales. In recent years she has been the lady that provided the refreshments and has been popular with both young and old for her cheery chat and excellent cups of tea. The presentation took place as a surprise at the Waitrose cafe with members of the district in attendance. Representing the scouts both past and present was Christine White one of the Warsash leaders. Speaking on behalf of the young people of Scouting, Christine said that is was a both a delight and an honor to be able to acknowledge the contribution that Val had made to the Young people of Warsash and to Scouting overall. Fellow cafe goers stood and applauded as Val received her award. Warsash Sea Scouts celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and is

Recycle your stamps and give to a good cause says Mike Thornton MP E astleigh MP Mike Thornton visited St. Francis Animal Welfare near Eastleigh and toured the charity’s facilities with manager Helen Kerris Shaw.

As well as hearing about the plight of animals who are left at the centre to be rehomed, Mike donated boxes of used printer cartridges and stamps collected in his constituency office. St. Francis’s is able to exchange these for funds which can be used to support its charity work. Mike Thornton said: “It was good to visit St Francis before Christmas and see first hand the brilliant work that they do to rehouse homeless animals in Eastleigh. “I was glad to be able to donate used stamps and print cartridges to such a worthy cause and would encourage everyone to look around their homes and offices for anything they might be able to spare.” Helen Kerris Shaw, the Centre’s Manager, said: “We welcome all donations and can take pet food and treats, bedding and toys etc. for use with our animals. We can also take bric-a-brac, books and new items for selling at events – we rely entirely on our own fundraising so this is a big help to all of our residents. “We’re grateful to Mike for bringing us so many stamps and empty print

cartridges that his office has stored up. We exchange these for funds, so we’d love it if people could bring in their own from work or home.” The charity rehomes on average 130 cats and 70 dogs per year, but with limited space and resources there are always animals waiting to be given a space. To donate please contact Helen on 02380 693282 or email stfrancisanimalwelfare@gmail.com

Eastleigh Councillors Provide £50k To Build School Crossing

L

ib Dem Borough Councillors in Eastleigh have provided nearly £50,000 to help cover the cost of a new crossing on a busy road.

Children needing to cross the busy Hound Road, on the way to Hamble School, should this year get a safe pelican crossing to help them. Local resident Maria Hutchinson spearheaded the campaign to get the County Council to deliver the much-needed crossing after a near miss involving a school student. Following a meeting this Thursday evening, the Bursledon, Hamble-leRice and Hound Local Area Committee allocated almost £50,000 to the project. This should cover over 50% of the cost of the work. Local MP Mike Thornton said: “This is wonderful news for children in Netley. I trust that Hampshire County Council will listen to residents and I was happy to support this campaign to provide a safer crossing for local children. “This is a fantastic example of local people pulling together and I’d like to say a big thank you to local resident Maria Hutchinson for spearheading this campaign, as well as to the Lib dem Councillors who have provided these funds.” David Airey, Councillor for Netley Abbey and EBC Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “I’m really pleased with the support from other members for allocating money to this project. This crossing will make it so much

safer for children going to Hamble Sports College. “I hope to see this crossing put in for the Autumn. My thanks to Maria for being the driving force behind this project.” Maria Hutchinson said: “I’m delighted that the LAC have agreed to allocate this money towards the controlled crossing. I am confident that Councillor Seán Woodward at Hampshire County Council will fund the remainder of the money, especially as the road does pass the criteria for the controlled crossing. “I would like to thank the local community for getting behind this campaign. Together we really can make a difference.”

Four firsts for 1st Whiteley

F

our scouts from the 1st Whiteley troop were presented with their Chief Scout’s Gold award badges at a special ceremony.

The presentation took place at Scoutabout, an event held by Fareham West District each year. This year around 150 scouts attended at Fareham Leisure Centre, and the awards were presented by District Commissioner Brigid Ryan. The Chief Scout’s Gold badge is the highest award available to scouts in modern scouting and is not often achieved. The four Jack Moseley, Joe Goozee, Isobelle Woodward and Ben Anderson are also Patrol leaders, and are the first scouts to earn the award in the 12 years that 1st Whiteley Scouts have been in existence. The troop has gone from strength to strength and is always in need of additional adult helpers. They meet from 7-9 on Monday evenings in the Whiteley Community Centre and because they are so popular they keep attracting new recruits, so need more adults to assist the four uniformed leaders to supervise activities. Their programme is varied and interesting with traditional scouting items like: camping, hikes, climbing, kayaking, cooking, First Aid, signalling, map reading, as well as D.I.Y., and community involvement. If you live in Fareham or Whiteley and have a spare couple of hours on a Monday evening they would be very pleased to hear from you. How Clean Is Your Tile? N

ATURAL Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’? Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid. Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-colour the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.

“Don’t Fret About Your Dirty Stone Or Ceramic Tile Floors… We Can Bring Them Back To Life.” YES!! Including Those Filthy Grout Lines - And They Can Apply A Sealer To Keep Them Looking That Great Longer!

Let the Tile Doctor clean and protect for you. Call now on 0800 695 695 9 or visit www.hampshiretiledoctor.co.uk, for a free ‘demo’!

Computer Know How! A

dvanced System Care (ASC) 8, is one of IObit’s latest creations that seems to work well!

This program will fix registry errors, remove spyware, clean junk files... the list goes on. So is this a competitor to the famous ccleaner (a similar program made by piriform)? It could be. It also includes an uninstaller; just like ccleaner, so you can boost, fix and clean your PC within this one tool. ASC also has a smiley face system that is very easy to recognise which tells you the health status of your system: Blue happy face - meaning your computer is in good shape Amber dull face - telling you that your PC could do with some maintenance Red sad face - explaining that you need to interact with your PC

urgently as it could have some serious problems. Pros: • Free unless you upgrade using the ‘activate now banner’. • Packed full of useful tools • Quick, efficient piece of software that works. Cons: • You might get the impression that they want you to upgrade and pay for the software, which can be annoying. • Some extra tools need to be installed in order for them to work. • Watch out for adware when you install the ASC program. As you may have heard, Windows 10 should be rolling out towards the end of this year but to be honest it looks very similar to Windows 8 at this moment in time. Windows 7 is by far the best operating system around and is still being used by 56% of all computer users (including Mac users too!). Unfortunately it has stopped being supplied on most computers from retail stores like, PC World/Currys, Novatech etc. as it has been replaced by 8/8.1. But that doesn’t mean that support is being terminated for the operating system. Microsoft will continue to update 7 until 2020! So if you are thinking about getting a new PC, Hypersonic IT recommend you get your hands on a Windows 7 PC and not think ‘shall I wait for the new windows?’ They can still get hold of brand new PCs supplied with windows 7 so give them a call! Don’t forget that you can always contact them for free impartial advice and hardware and software support, tuition, web design, data retrieval, commercial and home networking, all with an efficient and friendly service. Portsmouth International Port harnesses the power of light

A

one million pound investment in the latest solar technology at Portsmouth International Port will bring longterm savings and environmental benefits for at least the next 20 years.

Engineers worked throughout November and December to install the high tech panels covering large areas on top of three warehouses. The roofs of newly constructed ‘Shed13’, and Sheds 6,9 and 10, have now become ‘solar farms’, the photovoltaic cells harnessing solar radiation from the sun and turning it into electricity. The panels were switched on at the end of 2014 and are now fully operational. Managers at Portsmouth International Port have employed energy saving measures in all new developments at the Port. The terminal building, which opened in 2011, is heated and cooled using thermal energy from the sea and the natural coastal breeze. Low cost LED lighting is used throughout the new building and surrounding areas. The investment in solar panels is the latest move to reduce the carbon footprint of Portsmouth International Port, with reducing its impact on the environment a key policy aim. MMD Ltd is one of the most energy intensive parts of the operation, with climate-controlled warehouses a crucial requirement for keeping the fresh produce it handles in optimum condition. The new solar panels will provide 15% of MMD’s annual energy requirements, creating an average profit to MMD Ltd of £112,000 per annum, at current prices. With a lifespan of at least 20 years the panels will pay for themselves in less than six years, whilst reducing the requirement to take expensive power from the national grid. This in turn reduces emissions at the generating stage of the power chain. Martin Putman, Port Manger at Portsmouth International Port, said, “We’ve researched many options for reducing our carbon footprint and saving money on power at MMD. Now that solar technology is more efficient, and the panels have become cheaper, it is definitely the right time to make this significant investment in our future. We know the South Coast has more solar radiation than anywhere else in the UK, so we are guaranteed a good rate of return on our investment.” MMD requires seven megawatts of electricity every year, power that is used not only for climate control but also lighting and electrically operated forklift trucks and other vital equipment. The newly installed solar panels will immediately provide one megawatt of power every year. That’s enough electricity to power 239 average sized homes. Customers at Portsmouth International Port are also doing their bit for the environment. Brittany Ferries has recently returned its ferry ‘Normandie’ to the Port after extensive engineering work to reduce emissions at sea. Exhaust gas scrubbers have been fitted to the vessel, dramatically reducing pollution from its large diesel engines. ocal Special Schools Assistant, Celia Martin, is busy training hard for this year’s Virgin London Marathon and is planning to raise as much money as she can for a cause close to her heart.

Sarah organised the ball with Bobby Davro on hand to entertain the guests of over 200 who were in stitches. The gourmet meal saw the head of the table, wearing a proper chef’s hat and apron, carve the succulent beef that just melted in the mouth. There was an auction that raised a massive amount along with the raffle, a wonderful sum of over £16,600 was raised and the proceeds were divided between the charities, the Dave Wellman Cancer Trust and CLIC Sargent. The evening was sponsored by S G Consultancy in Fareham and was in loving memory of Jamie Whitehouse, Sarah’s dear friend. Sarah met Jamie whilst they were both going through treatment. Sadly Jamie passed away, but Sarah wanted to raise money in Jamie’s honour. Sarah not only went through a double mastectomy and reconstruction, but she also had secondary in her Carotid Artery. But with the help of her amazing consultant, family and friends, she came through and has achieved so much. Not only has she put on an amazing ball, she has also put herself through Hell Runner, a gruelling assault course and 12 miles of a mud fest. Sarah said “Jamie was my rock throughout. He understood like noone else, he was the bravest and kindest man I have ever met and I promised him shortly before he was taken from us after a long battle with cancer that I would do as many crazy muddy runs as I could.” Sarah continued. “CLIK is an awesome charity and one which helped Jamie and his family throughout. Donations are so important and do so much – I also support a local charity, The Dave Wellman Cancer Trust, another close to my heart helping in the research and supporting many individual and families. I would like to thank everyone who has donated and made the money I have raised possible”. Tina said “Sarah is an inspiration, and to see her with her wonderful son, Aidan, is lovely, they truly are a team and love each other so much. I cannot thank Sarah, her friends and her family enough for their hard work, they truly have helped in the fight against cancer”.

Titchfield Spirit, the book T

itchfield Spirit is an Oral History Project which is collecting local stories for the period 1914 - 1945.

They are preserving these tales so younger generations will know what it was like to live back then. They have been hearing about strawberry growing, dog fights overhead and little boys collecting hot shrapnel, the Balloon Barrage, crashed German pilots being arrested by pitch fork, going to school with gas masks etc. They would love to hear from you if you can add more stories. They have a deadline of the end of February, so if you haven’t yet been in touch, now is the time to get on the computer or pick up a pen. If you are already on their list, they will get to you as soon as possible. You may have already written your stories down or are happy to get scribbling, which is a great help. They can type them up, so you don’t have to worry about that, but if you don’t fancy writing your stories down, they can come and interview you. Whichever is easiest. You may not have stories yourself, but know someone in the family, or a neighbour, who has great stories which clearly need to be preserved. O

nce again, a huge crowd of 220 ladies attended Christmas “Ladies Lets Lunch” held at the Concorde Club to support Sandy Jones of Rhian Fashion House in Warsash, whilst raising funds for the Dave Wellman Cancer Trust. The raffle on the day raised £2000, and with ticket money the grand total reached nearly £4000. The models strutted the catwalk with the latest fashions, some with the festive season in mind. Rhian Jones, Sandy’s daughter sang before the day got under way, always an emotional few minutes. Proceeds from ticket sales will be going to the charity. Tina said “Sandy raises so much for charities every year with her fun and fabulous shows, I can never thank her enough for all she does for so many. Sandy has become a Patron for the local charity and since, and including last Christmas, the grand total the ladies lunches have raised is £10,000, such generosity. Every lady present has made a huge impact in the cancer fight. Sandy is a true friend and she has always got the kettle on if you visit her in her fashion house “Rhian’s” in Warsash. If you do, Sandy can fill you in on the 2015 lunches coming up, they are normally a sell-out, so book yours now!”

The Solent Singers

2014 was another busy and successful year for The Solent Singers. In April they joined the Solent Male Voice Choir in a concert raising money for the RNLI. In May, they took part in the Fareham Music Festival and in July they helped Sarisbury URC church celebrate their 80th anniversary. Also in July they held their own Summer Concert where their chosen charity was The Haven Breast Cancer Support Centre in Titchfield. They were supported in this concert by Hook-withWarsash School Choir and Saxophony. The charity they chose to support for their Carols by Candlelight services was The Rainbow Centre in Fareham. They have been able to donate £850.00 to support the work at the centre. Also at Christmas members of the choir entertained folks by singing carols at the “Memory Café” held at Warsash URC and at QA Hospital to help raise funds for QA Hospital Radio. They have just recommenced rehearsals for their 2015 programme and always look forward to welcoming new members. They would particularly welcome Altos at this time. If you would like to join them they meet on Monday evenings at 7.30pm in the Victory Hall in Warsash. The all-new Nook and Cranny The new chef at the Nook and Cranny is taking local dining to a different level, says our food reviewer Sarah Norbury

O

ne of Hampshire’s best-loved restaurants lies tucked away down a country lane in the tiny hamlet of Hook, near Warsash. For the last 30 years it was run by a popular couple who cooked classic French food. Recently they retired, throwing the surrounding towns and villages into a fluster. What would happen to the revered Nook and Cranny? Many loyal customers wanted it to stay exactly as it was.

As we sipped gin and tonics and perused the menu, the waitress brought us a complimentary basket of warm onion-topped focaccia and soft rye bread. Both were excellent, a promising sign, and the butter was French Beurre d’Isingy. So far, so good!

Fast forward and there’s a new chef in residence and - brave man that he is - a new menu! Malcolm Goble told me, “There’s nowhere else in the neighbourhood that does top-notch food for special occasions, and with so much love from the locals we knew the Nook and Cranny was the right venue for us. Our food is modern British, using seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients and we make no bones about calling it ‘fine dining’”.

Even better though were my partner’s seared Cornish scallops served on a caulifower puree with chorizo and garlic butter. This was certainly ‘fine dining’ - if that’s how you describe exquisitely presented and perfectly cooked ingredients. The three scallops were meltingly soft, the puree featherlight and the chorizo finely chopped, giving tiny bursts of flavour.

Fine dining! This, I had to try, so for all those Informer readers who knew the ‘old’ Nook and Cranny, here’s an early report on its new incarnation. The first thing that struck me as different is the new decor, cosy still, but it’s in a comfortable antique-chic style. Malcolm and his business partner Simon Farr said that they owe a massive thank you to Jamie of Henry Paints Furniture for his design concept. Jamie worked with some of the existing furniture and also supplied some of his own to create the new look. There was a warm, friendly atmosphere on the Saturday night we visited. Around us was a mix of couples and small groups of friends, with the quiet buzz of conversation punctuated by happy laughter and lots of ‘mmm delicious’. Tables were laid with crisp white cloths and napkins and the two waitresses were professional and charming.

MARCH 2015

My starter was a twirling tower of smoked salmon topped with caviar, and beside it a sizeable chunk of fish, hot-smoked salmon this time, beautifullly complemented by wafer thin dill-pickled vegetables.

The main courses all sounded so tempting it was hard to choose. We both fancied the 28-day aged fillet steak and the duck breast and confit leg but as a fish lover I couldn’t resist the halibut poached in a light fish cream with prawns and my partner eventually decided on the duo of pork. The halibut was perfectly cooked and I loved the delicate, creamy broth full of plump prawns, small cubes of potato and a little kale. My partner’s pork dish was less virtuous with a large piece of fillet - cooked slightly pink, as it should be - resting on a bed of prettily piped mustard mash, flanked by two precisely cut slices of slow-cooked belly. A sage-infused jus added even more flavour to an already tasty dish. All this pork sounds like man-food, and the portion was plentiful, yet the presentation was refinedand very pleasing to the eye, though to be honest my partner looked at it for about a second before diving in.

We were having such a good time that I forgot my slightly health freak tendencies and ordered doughnuts for pudding. Naughty but very, very nice. Again, the dish was a work of art - five tiny, crisp-on-the-outside, soft-on-theinside orbs with an artful twirled stick of white chocolate and a jug of light custard. My partner loved his toffee apple tart topped with oat crumble served with custard too, but his flavoured with caramel. Finishing the bottle of Muscadet that had matched so well with all six of our dishes, we agreed that Malcolm Goble is a superb cook. Believe it or not when we got chatting with the couple on the next table that Saturday night they said they loved it so much they’d already booked for lunch the next day! Later, talking with the new chef, I discovered that the 38-year trained locally before working his way up to Executive Chef in a restaurant group in West Sussex. Now living back in the Solent area he also owns Edwards Catering which runs the Bistro at Abshot Country Club.

But it’s the new Nook and Cranny that the duo are taking local dining into a different league, and it’s here that Malcolm Goble lets loose his skills and creativity. These, applied to well-sourced, top quality ingredients, are in my opinion creating something very special indeed.

Opening times: Thursday - Saturday evenings 6.00pm - midnight. Sunday lunchtimes 12 noon - 5.00pm. The Nook and Cranny are happy to open for parties of 8 or more at any time on any day of the week.

The Caci Jowl Lift Specifically targets those loose muscles around the jawline, using quad probe applicators designed to double the lifting action of the Caci treatment system, therefore enhancing the results and reducing treatment time. The 15 minute facial treatment helps improve the appearance of sagging jowls by using the quad probes which have been specifically developed to target the muscles around the jawline. They emit tiny electrical impulses to lift, firm and redefine the facial contours. You can have the treatment incorporated in the full facial Caci treatment for an extra £15 or as a stand alone treatment for £25, it is completely painless and the results are superb.

Call the salon today for more information.

I lost a third of my body weight with local hypnotherapist My name is Kirsteen and I started the Easyloss Weight Loss programme on 19th January 2013, weighing 15st 3lbs.

Health & beauty

I’d been depressed about my weight for a long time, but wasn’t one for diets, so the weight just crept up. However two things had happened which made me decide that I had to change. Firstly my 10yr old son, commented that I was fat, he liked it because I was cuddly but nonetheless I was fat, it felt like a knife going through me, he was right, but he had said it when nobody else would have dared. Then I went shopping in the January sales and I was unable to fit into size 18 trousers and so I decided I had to do something, I couldn’t bring myself to even try on a size 20. So I started the Easyloss Programme with Sue from the Hampshire Hypnotherapy Centre in Whiteley. In the first week I lost 5lbs and I took this as the proof that it did work! So I listened to Sue and I followed the guidelines. I ate the same as everyone else in my house ate, just a lot less of it. I went out for meals, enjoyed parties and even lost weight when on holiday.! By middle of July (just 6 months from when I started) I had lost 4st 8lbs, between then and November I lost a further 8lbs here or there and so now weigh about 10st. Total loss of over 5stone! I have a normal BMI and I wear size 10 trousers and have recently bought a size 8 top. I have more confidence, I take more pride in my appearance. I wear clothes that show off my figure, where in the past I would wear big sloppy tops to hide my body. I walk more, I smile more and I go out more. I no longer think about food all the time, but I really enjoy my food when I eat. Call Hampshire Hypnotherapy Centre on 07946 641270 or 0800 970 4776 or visit www.hantshypno.co.uk for information on how Easyloss can help you to lose weight without dieting.

The heat is on for 2015 Hampshire Create and Cook Competition

Aspiring chefs in Hampshire aged 12-14 years have the opportunity to win £1000 for their school food technology department with the launch of the 2015 Create and Cook Competition. he hotly contested competition, which is organised by Fit2cook food education and sponsored by The Southern Co-operative, sees pairs of young cooks across Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Sussex take up the challenge to create and cook a two course menu using produce sourced from their local area. With cooking now compulsory on the school curriculum, the Create and Cook Competition has even more relevance. School pupils from Year 7-10 are now being asked to ‘understand the source, seasonality and characteristics of a range of ingredients’ as well as have a general understanding of cookery techniques and nutrition. As Min Raisman, Director of Fit2cook food education explained: “Entrants also need to submit information about the production, character and distinctiveness of their key locally sourced ingredients and show an understanding of why it’s important to buy local. We believe that this insight not only makes young people better cooks as it demonstrates they really understand their ingredients, but also makes them aware that their buying choices have consequences – environmentally, socially and economically.” Finalists from each county will battle it out with a cook off at the regional final in June to win the competition trophy and £1000 for their school food technology department. A prestigious line up of judges includes Head Chef at the Aviator Hotel in Farnborough, Adam Fargin, 2013 BBC Masterchef: The Professionals champion Steven Edwards from Sussex, Executive Chef at the Exclusive Chefs Academy, Andy MacKenzie and The Southern Co-operative’s Chief Operating Officer for Food Retail, Phil Ponsonby.

Abigail Jenkinson and Freya Body (both 14) from Applemore Technology College in Dibden Purlieu (pictured right) won the Hampshire final of the 2014 Create and Cook competition. They said: “The competition was hard work and took a lot of time but we were so pleased to get to the final; it’s been a great experience that has made us think more about following a career in food. We’ve learnt a lot from local producers and the judges were helpful and friendly so we weren’t too nervous once we started cooking!” They were beaten in the regional final by competition champions Joe Doncaster and Alice Hyde, from Sandown Bay Academy on the Isle of Wight. The deadline for young cooks aged 12-14 years to enter the 2015 Create and Cook Competition is Friday 20 March 2015, and entries need to be submitted to fit2cook through their school food technology department. The partnership between fit2cook and The Southern Co-operative for the Create and Cook competition was highly commended by Business in the Community (BITC) 2014 Responsible Business Awards. The Create and Cook competition is sponsored by The Southern Co-operative and supported by the food community across the south. Find out more at fit2cook.co.uk/createandcook

he festivities are behind us. Lets move forward with new focus and confidence in the classroom. Kumon can make the acadenic challenges of 2015 easier to cope with and more successful. At your local Locks Heath Study Centre, Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes which are tailored to all ages and abilities. Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle work. The Kumon Maths Programme leads students from basic numbers to the mastery of arithmetic, algebra and calculus, all without the use of a calculator. Through daily study of this worksheet-based programme, students develop an affinity for mental maths and the confidence to apply a range of skills when faced with a new challenge. A new life for Joyce A

Care in the community

new lease of life has come to a Locks Heath resident. Joyce Smith, is the latest client of Home Instead, a local company supporting the elderly and helping them remain independent in their own homes.

Joyce has arthritis and began to find that getting around was proving harder and so her trips to the local shops and library became less frequent. Soon she was seeing less people and for the first time in many years felt lonely and isolated. Joyce heard about Home Instead from a friend and asked owner, Luisa Castle, to visit her to discuss how they could help. “Luisa and I chatted about what I missed and would like. Now, I have three visits a week from Julie, my CAREGiver, who takes me to the shops in her car and one day a week we just chat and do a puzzle together. I look forward to Julie’s visits.” Home Instead, based in Park Gate, have seen a surge of demand for their companionship service. Luisa Castle commented “there are many people in our community just like Joyce, who would love our companion service. Our staff are carefully selected, then matched with the client to ensure a positive relationship is built on trust”. Home Instead provide a wide range of services and remain the highest recommended care company in Southampton*. After a cremation, some relatives want to lay ashes to rest straightaway, while others find comfort in keeping them for a while. Either way, when the time is right, selecting the perfect final resting place for your loved one is an important decision. The sympathetic team at the family-run Portchester Memorial Gardens are experienced in helping to create fitting, lasting tributes within their secluded, mature gardens. A variety of themed areas have been cultivated within tranquil grounds – including the Garden of the Sea with its sculptural anchors and wooden jetty, and the Hill of Roses, flooded with scent and colour. Little Springs, overlooking a waterfall, is currently being developed for families who have lost babies, with a colourful summer planting palette to attract butterflies and bees. Linked together by meandering streams and pathways, the diverse garden areas are complemented by a beautiful lake and Temple, which provide an unrivalled setting for contemplation. With personal graves offered in which to lay ashes to rest, you can mark the exact spot with an individual memorial stone and vases. Memorial only options are also available – just talk to the team about your requirements.

EASY LAWN A

rtificial Grass has never received the greatest press, and has been given a bad name in the past. Commonly associated with old astro-turf matting, the use of artificial grass has always been looked upon negatively within a domestic garden.

Gardening

These days, technology has advanced and artificial grass has come on leaps and bounds. With a huge variety of artificial grass ranges, it is becoming increasingly hard to tell the difference between the artificial and real grass. A low maintenance solution for professionals or families who want an attractive garden without the upkeep, artificial grass can provide this easy yet aesthetically pleasing solution. Growing your own vegetables

Over the last few years, there has been an explosion of Foodie TV shows advocating the Gardening

use of fresh produce and growing vegetables. Allotments have become very popular, and in some areas, especially cities, the waiting lists are so long, that it can be decades before people are given a plot of their own.

T

here now seems to be an accepted view that it is very difficult to get a little patch of your own on which to grow your own vegetables. There is however good news for local people. In the Western Wards of Fareham the waiting lists are not very large, and some plots will be coming available later in the year. So it might be worth applying for an allotment if you want to get some of the benefits of producing your own food. These benefits are:-You have control of pesticides, fungicides and weed killers etc. that may be on commercially grown crops. Exercise. An hour in the gym helps you get fit. But when you get off the tread mill, you only have sweat to show for your efforts. After an hour digging and cultivating your allotment you could have planted enough potatoes to see you through the winter, and you are out in the fresh air. Sense of community. Most plot holders are very helpful, and happy to share ideas, recipes and excess produce with their neighbours. Allotments are a right passed down to us from our forebears, and we have a duty to our children and grandchildren to pass them onto them in good shape. If you would like more information, it is worth looking on line at the

Allotment Association web site, or any other web site about growing your own food. There are also some excellent magazines available from the news agents or local library. The Western Wards Allotment Association also have their own web site WWAA.org. If you are inspired to have a go, contact Martin on 01489 589485

March

...at Swanwick Lakes March is a great month for seeing and hearing signs of spring at Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve.

Primrose by David Kilbey

Great tit by Ian Cameron-Reid

T

his is the time of year when birds sing their loudest, marking out and establishing their territories. Many birds, like the familiar blue tits and great tits, will also be starting work on their nests. Over the last few years, we have been lucky enough to watch great tits nesting in our camera equipped bird box. It is truly fascinating watching the dramas of the nesting season unfold. On one occasion a few years ago, a pair of blue tits appeared to be competing with bumble bees to use the nest box. We will also be keeping a close eye out for nuthatches. These smart little birds build their nests in tree holes. They often use mud to reduce the size of the hole and ‘plaster’ the interior. As the weather warms, common frogs emerge from hibernation and head straight for our ponds to breed. Look out for frog spawn, particularly in the small pond near Ben’s Lake. Our other amphibians, toads and newts, also begin to breed this month. Many of our familiar spring flowers are in bloom in March- primroses and the humble celandine are two of my favourites. These flowers, like other woodland species, bloom early to get the full benefit of the light that reaches the woodland floor before the leaves develop on the trees. They are an important early nectar source for insects, which in turn help the plants to reproduce by carrying pollen from one flower to another. Sights and sounds of spring are everywhere at Swanwick Lakes this month!

Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve is an 86 acre reserve located on Sopwith Way, off Swanwick Lane. The reserve is owned by NATS and managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The reserve is open from dawn until dusk for all to enjoy. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is the leading nature conservation charity in the two counties. For more than 50 years, we have protected local wildlife and inspired people to love nature. No other organisation, local or national, does more to protect the wildlife and wild places of Hampshire, the Island and our local seas. Our 27,000 members and 900 volunteers share our belief that nature is important, and that we can all do something to help protect the wildlife on our doorstep. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust manages 48 nature reserves across the two counties and works with numerous land owners to create living landscapes and living seas. Rory McGrath & Philip Pope A Bridge Over Troubled Lager – Volume 2 What’s on

UK Tour 2014/15 Thursday 19th March, Spring Arts Centre, Havant Hants

Following a hugely successful run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, Rory McGrath and his musical partner Philip Pope, hit the road, this autumn, with their hilarious musical show A Bridge Over Troubled Lager – Volume 2.

M

cGrath and Pope’s marriage of mirth will once again combine Rory’s sublime lyrics – a signature combination of sophistication, wryness and downright filth – with the mature elegance and artistry of Philip’s music. Expect dozens of songs, rudely interrupted by the pair’s backchat and bickering on subjects including – but not limited to – social media, pets, Scottish independence, Philip’s toe, love, marriage, Croatian pop in the 90’s and foul language. And then there’s reality TV, conservation, Schubert, heavy metal, the French, hardline Christianity and the Polish word for a mayfly. Rory McGrath – comedy writer, presenter, actor and singer-songwriter – was born in Cornwall and read modern languages at Cambridge. He started his career as house comedy writer for BBC Radio LE, writing for Frankie Howerd, Dave Allen, Roy Hudd, David Jason, Alfred Marks and many others. Besides writing for shows such as Who Dares Wins and Alas Smith and Jones, he was a co-founder of Hat Trick Productions – responsible for such classics as Whose Line is it Anyway?, Father Ted, Have I Got News For You and Chelmsford 123. In the ‘90s, he became a mainstay on hit sports/comedy panel show They Think it’s all Over. More recently McGrath has been a regular on Grumpy Old Men, Three Men in a Boat and Great British Adventure (Paddy McGuinness, Will Mellor) and has presented numerous documentaries on history, engineering, beer and wine and nature. His writing exploits have brought two autobiographical works – the Sunday Times bestseller Bearded Tit (about love and birdwatching), and The Father, the Son and the Ghostly Hole (being brought up a Catholic). He is also a passionate Arsenal supporter.

Philip Pope first appeared at the Fringe with the Oxford Revue in the late ‘70s with Angus Deayton, Geoffrey Perkins and Helen Atkinson Wood with whom he then appeared in Radio Active on Radio 4 for 7 series. He soon became known for his vocal impressions and from this came parody band The Hee Bee Gee Bees in the ‘80s - he was the the driving musical force. He went on to be musical director and lead singer for Spitting Image (The No1 hit The Chicken Song was his handiwork) Like McGrath he also starred in TV’s Who Dares Wins and Chelmsford 123, as well Not The Nine O’Clock News, KYTV, Shelley and Blackadder. He also donned a cunning disguise and altered his voice to become Tony Angelino, the ‘Crying’ speech impediment singer in a classic episode of Only Fools and Horses. He has recently guested in the very popular Outnumbered and acclaimed spoof documentary The Life of Rock with Brian Pern. He is a regular cast member of Radio 4 favourite Old Harry’s Game - Andy Hamilton’s long-running radio show about Satan. As a musician and composer, Philip’s credits read like a who’s who of British comedy and include The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Fry & Laurie, The Lenny Henry Show, Dirk Gently, Whose Line is it Anyway?, The Fast Show and Harry & Paul and he has written music for a vast amount of TV and radio shows such as Outnumbered, Jonathan Creek, Badults and Yonderland, as well as Gimme Gimme Gimme, My Hero and Benidorm. He has also composed for films including Kevin & Perry Go Large. He is also an avid Arsenal supporter. Twitter: @philpopemusic

New Year Breakdown…

Property, finance & law

The breakdown of a relationship is upsetting and difficult at any time, but the beginning of the year is always a busy time for Family Lawyers.

F

amilies in this situation will be going through a multitude of emotions; hurt, anger, grief, bitterness, frustration, fear and uncertainty with regard to the future. Members of the professional body ‘Resolution’, commit to a constructive way of dealing with matters in a non-confrontational way for a better outcome, both financially and emotionally, for all concerned.

Beverley Pym

The possibility of reconciliation is always explored, but if that is not a possibility, the first concern will be with regard to any children - shared care agreements and how often parents will spend time with them. The family finances will also be considered, as there will be a need for two homes rather than one. There may be issues involving pensions, shares and investments. as well as any debts such as loans, overdrafts and credit cards. Often, couples are directed to ‘Mediation’ which is a process conducted by an impartial Mediator, whose job it is to facilitate sensible and meaningful discussions between separating couples with a view to them finding their own solutions to matters arising from the breakdown of their relationship. Another option would be for there to be voluntary exchange of financial information and negotiations through Solicitors, with a view to reaching a settlement. There is also ‘Collaborative Law’, where a couple attends a roundtable meeting with their Lawyers present, in the hope that a settlement can be negotiated. An alternative to starting the Court process to reach a financial settlement is ‘Arbitration’. This is a private process but where the award

is binding and can be converted into an enforceable Consent Order once it is approved by the Family Court. So there are a number of ways that you can settle matters out of Court. Mediation in particular, can often improve communication which is particularly important couples will be parenting children together in the future. Couples who can resolve matters amicably do tend to move on with their lives happily. Beverley Pym is a Senior Associate and Family Mediator from the Family Law Team at Eric Robinson Solicitors. She can be contacted on 01489 774853 or beverley.pym@ericrobinson.co.uk For more information on this or any legal matter visit www.ericrobinson.co.uk

Annuities - not gone and not forgotten!

T

Property, finance & law

here have been many headlines about the pension changes due in April with the focus being placed on pensions going into Drawdown and the wonderful new flexibilities that are going to be on offer. But what about annuities? Are they still around? Are they still suitable? Annuities are still available and continue to form a vital part of any retirement planning discussion. Since the radical pension reforms there has been plenty of work carried out in the world of annuities which could make them the right choice for many retirees. Here are some of the main changes: Guarantee periods The maximum limit of 10 years for guarantee periods has been removed for all new annuities bought after 6th April 2015. Clients will be able to tailor their own Guarantee period to their personal circumstances, subject to provider terms and conditions, to ensure that income continues to loved ones on their death. Tax on beneficiary income: Death before 75 – Subject to legislation, for payments within a guarantee period the income can be paid to any beneficiary tax-free, as opposed to being previously taxable at the beneficiaries’ marginal rate. Tax on lump sum death benefits (Value Protection): • Death before 75 – was 55%, now tax free • Death after 75 – was 55%, now 45% for 2015/2016, then marginal rate for 2016/2017 onwards (which makes it the same as Drawdown). These changes may not have always grabbed the headlines, but an annuity that is individually underwritten, sourced on the Open market can now provide even better value when providing a secure, guaranteed income for life in retirement. Do not ignore annuities in retirement. However, it is now even more vital that advice is taken on the most appropriate design and structure before committing to an annuity contract. If you would like to discuss your Retirement Options with an Independent Financial Adviser, please call Sheila Tarr I.F.S. on 01489 574355. The content of this article is for information only and must not be considered as financial advice. We always recommend that you seek independent financial advice before making any financial decisions.

Miller Homes helps Southampton youngsters with a spot of bird watching M

iller Homes South is helping youngsters in Southampton to welcome wildlife into their gardens this winter.

The award-winning housebuilder has joined forces with Sarisbury Green Pre-School to encourage the children find out more about the types of birds that live in their gardens. Miller Homes presented the youngsters with five bird boxes for the PreSchool to allow the two to four-year-olds to do a spot of bird watching of their own. The youngsters also took part in a colouring competition to decorate their very own birds, with the winners picking up book vouchers. Tracey Lee, sales director at Miller Homes explained that it is great to work with youngsters in the local community. She said: “It’s fantastic to see children so young taking an interest in wildlife and finding out about the sort of animals and birds living in their gardens. “Our Admirals Wood development in Sarisbury Green is surrounded by woodlands and tree-lined streets and we hope that people living there will also take a look at the wildlife on their doorsteps.” Kate Heaney is a teacher at Sarisbury Green Pre-School and, as she explained, the children really enjoyed working on this project with Miller Homes.

Miller Homes joined forces with Sarisbury Green Pre-School after running a successful summer campaign with the RSPB. As part of the scheme, anyone purchasing a property at the Admirals Wood development received a garden bird nest box along with a booklet of helpful hints on how to make their gardens a place where birds and nature can thrive.

She said: “The children had a great time. All week we have been learning about birds, making bird collages and bird food, which we now have on display along with the bird boxes.

Tracey added: “We take sustainability very seriously at Miller Homes and this means building responsibly and ensuring we do all we can to preserve the physical environment. We also work to create communities that flourish in every sense and one simple way to do this is to encourage biodiversity in these communities.”

“We have a lovely space outside for the little ones to enjoy and these new bird homes will be a great addition to our garden.”
