A COMMENTARY ON SELF SEGREGATION.
Tallahassee is home to two of the top schools in the nation FSU a PWI and FAMU an HBCU. The schools represent two different sides of the culture in the area. These differences cause levels of self segregation and prejudice throughout all of Tallahassee. With it being a small town everything really centers around supporting the schools. While each school is heavily accredited its very clear their is an area wide bias favoring FSU over FAMU. With these Issues in mind a major design goal for me is to try and break that pattern and work to incorporate both schools equally. I use train tracks to display both the “barrier” and breaking of the divide within my facade.
The train tracks are both a physical and metaphorical representation of the divided between the black and white communities in Tallahassee.
This project focuses on creating a light house in Nova Scotia. A main design challenge would be considering the structures purpose while also respecting the culture of the land.
Mi’kmaq History
The first peoples in what is now Nova Scotia were the Mi’kmaq, who belonged to a wider coalition known as the Wabanaki Confederacy. The Mi’kmaq presence can be traced as far back as 10,000 years. They were hunters and traders and, because of their proximity to the ocean, skilled saltwater fishers. A lot of the Mi’kmaq history was “erased” in Nova Scotia due to their early interactions with the European and French people. This led to many traditions being changed before they where ever officially documented. This Inspired me to incorporate a quilled box more specifically the porcupine quills used to craft the box as a base for the form of my building. The making of quilled boxes is one of the few traditions to survive colonization and continues to remain relevant to this day within their culture.
The Mi’kmaq people used porcupine quills primarily as a decorative element. The quills were usually harvested from the back of the porcupines neck down to the tail. The quills where then woven into sharp diagonal patterns
This project focuses on creating a community center in Apalachicola Florida. The main design challenge would be creating a shading screen and incorporating aspects of the communities culture.
AFRICAN ROOTS
The Apalachicola, Hillside Community is a rural seafood village on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in northwest Florida. Its a predominantly black community home to 2,400 residents. The community revolves around supporting education, continuing traditions, and educating others on the unique history of the area. A big event within the community is the H’COLA festival. A important event in this festival is a concert performed by local African drummers. These drums more specifically the Djemba Drum inspired the entrance to my building.
The dejemba drum is comprised of a solid piece of hardwood that has been carved out. Then rope and metal rings are then attached and tightened to create a playable pitch
My shading screen is inspired by Adire cloth. This cloth is a indigo resist dyed cotton that was made by women throughout Yorubaland in south-western Nigeria. Resist-dyeing involves creating a pattern by treating certain parts of the fabric in a way that prevents them absorbing dye. Some of the clothing used to be hand painted with patterns that have very important meanings. The specific design i chose is “ earring” which represents only hearing good news. I chose this pattern to reflect the positive attitude present within the community and its love for supporting and enriching the lives of the people there whether through education or self expression through music.
