Thousands of weapons destroyed The Guardia Civil in the provinces of Tenerife and Gran Canaria recently ordered the destruction of 6,015 weapons.

Under supervision, they were processed into scrap metal in a smelting furnace.

Using massive magnets, they were then lifted into the melting pot, where they became harmless metal lumps.

This memory, too, is likely to cause the town’s current mayor some concern when he worries about the security situation of his coastal residents in Santa Lucía. “The seismic activities we are currently registering in this area are within the normal limits of what is common in the area. Whether or not the stability of the cliff is at risk is not a matter for volcanologists, but rather for geologists. Domestic violence: Eighth fatal victim 2019 In the early hours of Monday, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Sara, only 26 years old, died of a cut to her throat. The fatal injury was inflicted on her by her partner Jaime.

The 29-year-old had only been living with the victim for three months in San Isidro, in the borough of Granadilla de Abona. Jaime was born in Colombia, but is of Spanish nationality and has never attracted attention through acts of violence or charges. The couple had met on the Internet. Sara's grandmother, who shared the apartment with the couple, had heard a discussion between the two. However, when she wanted to check that everything was alright, the door to the couple's room was locked. The victim herself had called the emergency services, but help arrived too late as she bled to death before the ambulance arrived. The emergency doctor could only confirm the death of the young woman.

They substituted the usual minute of silence for a minute of protest under the motto of 'Basta ya, hablemos por ellas' (Enough already, let's speak for them), which led to a musical performance containing messages alluding to this fight by the collective La Cuevva, consisting of male and female rappers from Los Realejos. Termite alarm in Valle de Guerra Nests of termites of the species Reticulitermes flavipes have now been discovered at ten different points in Valle de Guerra.

The plague has now spread from the borough of Tacoronte to La Laguna.

Previously, only two houses had been known to be affected by the termite infestation, but now there are five times as many, and they continue to spread by flight. "This proves that the termites in these two houses were not an isolated case carried away by pieces of wood, but that they are spreading," explains David Mora, who carried out on-site studies. "We discovered a new infestation at a restaurant.

Alleged terrorist arrested in Tenerife Guardia Civil officers based in Tenerife, in cooperation with Europol and Eurojust, have arrested a 26-year-old man from Mauritania, Y.T.O., who is suspected of being a possible terrorist.

He is said to have participated in the glorification of violence and indoctrination. Evidence was seized during a search of Y.T.O.'s apartment. The suspect is said not only to have passively consumed relevant propaganda material for the Islamic State via Whatsapp and Telegram videos, but also to have actively shared it.

On Monday, construction work officially began on the final phase to complete the island ring road between the north and south of Tenerife.

The tunnel will connect Erjos near El Tanque with Santiago del Teide. The cost of the project is estimated at €240.3 million and construction is expected to take four years.

In 2013, 497 firearms and 690 other weapons of various categories were destroyed in the Canary Islands. One year later there were 766 firearms and 1,872 other weapons and by 2015 there were 3,308 weapons and this year more than 6,000.

The possession of weapons is strictly regulated in Spain and is the responsibility of the Guardia Civil, which is an organisational part of the Spanish military. They are also responsible for the strict control of legal access to arms. The prerequisites for the legal acquisition of a weapon include a theoretical course on weapons expertise and a practical part on the

correct handling and storage of a weapon. In addition, the applicant must have no criminal record. If a gun licence expires and is not renewed or if there is an illegal possession, the law stipulates that the guns must be rendered unusable and destroyed. This applies not only to firearms, but also to dangerous stabbing weapons.

The new bus station in the northern metropolis of Puerto de la Cruz was inaugurated last Friday.

“This is a modern bus station that is accessible to all, suitable for the

handicapped. We will continue to work on improving public bus transport. Before the end of the year, more than 70 new vehicles will be integrated into the fleet and around 50 additional drivers will be hired,” announced Island President Pedro Martín at the opening ceremony. The new bus station is the fourth largest on the island and it is expected that around 3,600 passengers will use it every day, with an

annual average of 1.3 million people. Puerto de la Cruz Mayor Marcos González thanked all the authorities involved in the creation of this new building, which finally meets the requirements of the 21st century. The investment required of €2.2 million was supported by the Island Council which contributed €1.4 million. The remainder came from the local fund for the rehabilitation of Puerto de la Cruz. y

Astronaut exhibition at the Maspalomas lighthouse Interesting, partly unpublished exhibits

The exhibition, which can be seen in the Maspalomas lighthouse, consists of numerous, partly unpublished material and original NASA parts. Among other things, there are photos showing the three astronauts on a boat trip with the entrepreneur Virgilio Suárez along the coast of Mogán, as well as the diplomas they presented to the staff of the Canary Islands base. Numerous local and national media quoted Neil Armstrong as saying, "Gran Canaria is a wonderful island," on his departure for Madrid. From there the astronauts embarked on a tour of Europe.

The exhibition can be seen in the Maspalomas lighthouse until January 30 2020. It opens daily from y 10am to 5pm.

What is little known is the fact that Gran Canaria had a NASA base station that played an important role for the Apollo 11 astronauts. An exhibition at the Maspalomas lighthouse now commemorates this period.

For those on the way to the moon, after the launch of the rocket from Cape Canaveral, the control point in Gran Canaria was the first contact to Earth and the staff gave the astronauts on board, Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins an important course correction. On July 20, 1969, the approximately 50

employees of the Canary Islands NASA station in Maspalomas were so excited as the moon capsule 'Eagle' landed on the moon and made history. Three months after their successful landing on the moon and their spectacular return, the three astronauts visited Gran Canaria together with their wives to get to know the 'Canary Station' and personally thank the team for their support. They enjoyed the short break in Maspalomas, the hospitality of the people, a swim in the sea and the typical Canarian food. They went diving and danced to the sounds of typical Canarian folk music.

Ignacio González Martín was born in Santa Cruz de La Palma in 1936.

He had a lengthy career as an entrepreneur and politician. The 83-year-old was already seriously ill at the time of his arrest in April of this year. He was imprisoned

in a wheelchair and was immediately transferred to the infirmary because of severe breathing difficulties. He died there on November 18. The prison guards who were monitoring the sick man could not do anything to save him. He succumbed to a violent attack of respiratory distress. His family had already applied for a transfer to a hospital because of his poor state of health, but it was too late. The prisoner died before any decision y was made.

A man was recently arrested on a finca in Adeje, who had been sought by the Madrid police for months.

He had supposedly been threatening the employees at the Greek embassy in Madrid for weeks on end by telephone and threatening them with acts of revenge. One day, up to 40 such threatening calls were received at the Greek embassy. The extreme hatred that the caller demonstrated in all his contacts worried the embassy staff very much. The investigations by the National Police proved to be difficult and lengthy. The alleged perpetrator apparently used up to four different identities and stayed abroad for long periods. Thanks to the cooperation between the National Police in Madrid and Tenerife, the suspect was finally located and arrested in Adeje. He is a Spaniard with over 100 previous convictions for robbery, belonging to a criminal organisation and maltreatment. The man has also served a prison sentence in Greece. y

The Tenerife island councillor for the environment, Isabel García, recently visited the mountain village of Masca to see the progress of the work in the Barranco de Masca for herself, together with Buenavista's mayor Antonio González Fontes.

The ravine, one of the island's main tourist attractions and popular with

hikers, is now closed for the second season. After repeated accidents and difficult rescue operations, the gorge has been closed for safety reasons. For more than a year now, work has been underway to make the paths safer, install handrails in difficult areas and other safety measures. Mother killed by her son in Gran Canaria Campaigns and education The family tragedy occurred exactly one week before the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on November 25.

"We will continue to invest to make the issue visible in schools, associations and society in general and to better help the victims. Our goal is to eliminate violence against women in our society," said Mayor Héctor Suárez at the presentation of the campaign, before he became aware of the latest tragedy. From January to September of this year, 528 women made use of the social contact points in Telde, compared with only 389 in the previous year. "This is because we have increased the number of staff in these offices from four to

seven and are thus able to look after more women," explained Suárez.

Jonay López, the Equal Opportunities Officer, stressed that investments would continue to be made primarily in preventive and educational initiatives and in active help to raise awareness among the public. In this case, neighbours had called the police when her son attacked her at the beginning of the year. This kind of civil courage and intervention is an important element to help victims who cannot help themselves in this type of situation. Society must be attentive and act, and this is stated in the campaigns. However, neither the victim's own husband who was in the house, nor the neighbours, had noticed anything during the deadly attack on the mother. y

A family tragedy shook the population in the Jinámar district of Telde on November 18 when a man in his late 30s, killed his 69-year-old mother while his father slept in the next room, unaware.

When the second son of the family came home from work at about 8pm, he found his mother dead.

She had been strangled, showed signs of blows to her face, asphyxiation, and a presumed stab wound.

Although he immediately called the emergency services, nothing could be done for the 69-year-old.

Shortly afterwards, the criminal investigation department opened an investigation and preserved

the evidence at the scene. The other son, Benjamin S. A., was arrested shortly afterwards as the main suspect. This son has been suffering from schizophrenia for years. He had been having psychiatric treatment and had been discharged from hospital with medication but no special follow-up therapy. Whether or not he was taking the medication properly or why there were other outbreaks of violence is not clear at the moment. It is known that the police had to intervene several times at the apartment during arguments and fights, because the son had attacked his mother, for example at the beginning of the year, when neighbours called

the police. About three years ago he had tried to burn down his parents' house while his mother and father were still inside. Fortunately, the fire brigade was able to intervene quickly and prevent the worst outcome.

Outwardly, the family lived together in a normal, cordial manner. The outbreaks happened sporadically and behind closed doors.

The suspect regularly consumed cannabis. Last year, he had seriously injured himself by swallowing a substance like bleach or hydrochloric acid which made him ill and caused him to lose a lot of weight.

The main suspect was checked by a psychiatrist for his mental condition and taken into custody.

A team from the local RTVC television station was able to identify the victim, who is 34-year-old Pedro, a homeless man who often stays in the Plaza de Santo Domingo in Vegueta. He said that strangers offered him five euros for a slap in the face. He had agreed voluntarily and they had paid him.

However, he was not prepared for a slap with so much force. The police are searching for the perpetrators and asked for possible eyewitnesses or confidantes to contact them. y

The total investment required is estimated at €16.4 million, of which the Santa Cruz city council will contribute €5.6 million, the Canary Islands government €5.3 million, the Island Council €4 million and the ports authority €1.5 million. The new area, which opens the city to the sea, is intended to benefit residents, visitors and holidaymakers alike. y

Graffiti spray painter caught Officers from a Local Police patrol of the Special Unit for the Protection of the Urban Environment, Proteu, recently caught a 25-year-old graffiti sprayer one bright morning, as he tried to colourfully decorate a wall in the plaza next to the Chamber of Architects in Santa Cruz.

In the recent past, several wall and other graffitis have appeared near the Ramblas.

One of them was on the sculpture of Lady Tenerife, a work by Martín Chirino. This is why the Local Police were particularly attentive. The officers identified the man who had been caught red-handed and imposed a fine of €750. In addition, ten spray bottles in different colours, sev-

The visit took place at the express request of the Chinese President who wanted to experience the volcano up close, at its summit. He was accompanied

Otherwise the visit was exclusively private and Jinping and his wife had no contact with representatives of the Chinese community in Tenerife.

This was the second time that Jinping has stopped off in the Canary Islands during a visit abroad. Three years ago, in 2016, Jinping visited Gran Canaria.

Although this visit was purely private, there is a great interest on both sides to intensify the cooperation. It was only in July that there were talks in which the advantages for Chinese entrepreneurs

The Chinese market could also be of interest for tourism.

To welcome Xi Jinping at the Reina Sofía Airport in the south of the island, Canary Islands President Ángel Víctor Torres presented the Chinese President with a pictorial book featuring works by Canary Island artists and another volume on Tenerife's nature reserves. The Teide National Park has been recognised as a World Heritage Site since 2007.

By the way, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a stopover at the southern airport at almost the same time, but only while his aircraft was being refuelled. As in December last year on his return journey from the G-20 summit in Buenos Aires to Moscow, the Russian President preferred to stay on board his aircraft and fly on as y quickly as possible.

The anticipation of Christmas is the same as elsewhere, although there are some differences in how the party ends, and of course you have to get used to getting into the Christmas spirit under palm trees in the sunshine.

Christmas decorations During the Advent season, homes are adorned with Christmas decorations, not only inside, but also

outside, where the Three Kings or Santa Claus climb up ladders, over balcony railings or through the windows. The faรงades of the houses, balconies or gardens are decorated according to taste. Some do it more conspicuously, others more discreetly. The cities, towns and villages also wrap themselves in a Christmas magic of lights and a pre-Christmas programme. The Christmas tree with its colourful decorations and fairy lights is set up during the Advent season and nourishes the festive anticipation.

How to celebrate Christmas Eve is not a gift giving day, but it is even more important than Christmas day itself, after all, it heralds the birth of Christ. It is a cheerful day spent in the company of the family which is rounded off by a grand feast. According to Spanish custom, gifts are only given on Epiphany Day. In some families this tradition has already been somewhat softened and the children are given a gift on Christmas Eve so that the Christmas holidays don't seem so long. Port Authority ignores request to help the shearwaters Although every year between October 21 and November 20 many local councils and even tourist facilities take part in reducing the light pollution at night to protect the shearwaters, there are still ignoramuses, even within the authorities.

This was recently criticised by the environmental organisations Salvar La Tejita from Granadilla and SEO Birdlife, whose petition to protect the shearwaters was ignored.

The shearwater is a sea bird that comes ashore to raise the young. In late autumn, the young are fledged and take their first flight out to sea. If the night is too bright, however, they lose orientation or are blinded and crash.

Numerous volunteers are on duty

A chick that crashed near the ship and was covered in oil, was rescued during the day and taken to the rescue station

every year to collect any stricken young birds and nourish them if

necessary. In 2018 about 2,600 shearwaters were rescued.

Against this background, the activists of Salvar La Tejita contacted the Santa Cruz port authority and Tenerife Shipyards and asked for a temporary reduction of light contamination. Their request was made because of the light emitted by the largest ship in the world, Pioneering Spirit, which was moored in front of the port of Granadilla. The light from this ship irritated the young birds and many of them crashed. This was also confirmed by some of the workers on board, who did not know that there were reception stations for these birds on the island. The activists criticised not only that their petition was not taken seriously, but also that it was not even acknowledged.

Crazy motorbike racer caught A motorcyclist was recently caught on the road from Santa Cruz to San Andrés, speeding at 131 kilometres per hour with his Yamaha FZ65.

On this part of the route, the speed limit is only 50 kilometres per hour. Exceeding it by more than 80 kilometres per hour will cost a hefty fine and driving licence revocation. The speeding man headed straight into the Local Police speed trap at 3.28pm. The officers were able to confirm the owner of the motorcycle on the basis of the licence plate number and a little later, the driver, 50-year-old A.A.G.S. The offence was handed over to the court for the determination of the punishment. y

According to statistics, only 30 per cent of the passengers have booked an excursion. The remainder of the passengers leave the ship to explore the city on their own. Matilde Zambudio, Deputy Mayor and City Councillor for Eco-

nomic Development, sees great potential in this area. "We have to work on making the city even more attractive for this group of visitors. This includes opening shops in the city centre not only during the week, but also at weekends," she explained. Currently, these tourists generate around €25 million annually in the city and this source of income is to be further promoted so that more jobs result from it, to benefit the local population. Shopping, visits to restaurants and museums, a hospitable atmosphere - this should convince cruise holidaymakers to

spend time in the city, and to come back. "Santa Cruz de Tenerife has a lot to offer: The climate, the Anaga biosphere reserve, an ample historical heritage which has made it the second city in Spain with the most sculptures in its streets. We need to strengthen our relations with tour operators in order to be more present in their programmes.

Drunk at the wheel Local Police officers from Santa Cruz recently stopped a driver who had attracted attention due to his behaviour. The man exceeded the 0.25 per mill limit more than five times. In addition, his driving licence had expired. The alcohol test showed 1.3 per mill and this is considered a serious violation of road safety.

Also drunk, a man in his mid-20s caused an accident on the Avenida de Las Tirajanas in El Doctoral, Gran Canaria. The driver

lost control of his car, presumably due to excessive speed. His car left the road, collided with a palm tree and overturned. Only then did the VW Golf come to a standstill. Fortunately, the driver was not injured. However, an inspection by the Local Police from Santa Lucía revealed that he had exceeded the maximum alcohol consumption limit by a factor of three. Construction worker was the jewel thief A man who recently had construction work carried out in his house in the Geneto district of La Laguna suddenly noticed that he was missing jewellery worth around €30,000, so he filed a complaint with the National Police.

Since there were no traces of burglary, the suspicion fell relatively quickly on craftsmen who might have had access to the apartment without leaving any suspicious traces.

They also knew the daily routine of the apartment owner.

A 40-year-old man from La Laguna, who had not yet been found guilty of any crime, was quickly targeted by the investigators. This suspicion was confirmed shortly afterwards, when part of the loot was found in his apartment.

Storytelling festival based around fire In early December, for the 24th time, Los Silos will be transformed into a magical place where stories from all over the world are brought to life. Visitors can listen to the mysterious storytellers who bring out the most beautiful and exciting legends and stories from their treasure troves.

Two years ago, in 2017, director Ernesto J. Rodríguez Abad started a cycle that began with the theme of water. Last year the element of air breathed life into the festival and this time it is fire. For the anniversary of 2020, the cycle will end with the element Earth.

The Mexican, internationally renowned illustrator Gabriel Pacheco has taken over the artistic design of the festival poster. The flower that adorns the protagonist’s head is the fire flower. “It is a poster that tells a great story, a story about real fire, but without its clichés. It is a fire that comes from the Universe and is filled with words that become stories,” explained festival director Rodríguez Abad.

This year, too, a large number of artists are invited, who will delight their audiences with words and stories alone. They come from the Canary Islands, the Peninsula, Portugal, Costa Rica, Peru, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Uruguay, Guatemala and even from the African continent like Mba Bee Nchama from Equatorial Guinea.

A special highlight at 10.30pm is ‘Balcones de poesia’ (Balconies of Poetry), with poetry accompanied by the violinist Moises Rodríguez on the Plaza Nuestra Señora de la Luz. Sunday, December 8 also begins with stories about sunrise and breakfast. At 10.30am there will be the ‘Serenata de Jardín’. The participants will have to walk for around 20 minutes, so good comfortable shoes are recommended. At 1pm, the musical band of Los Silos will accompany the ‘Balcones de cuentos’ with stories from the Canaries, Costa Rica and Uruguay. There will be even more stories with words from the earth at 6pm at the Plaza de la Constitución. At 7pm there will be a colourful street parade through the centre of the village.

On December 6 at 9pm at the Hotel Luz del Mar, there will be an event especially for the German public. During ‘Humboldt erzählt ....’ the German actress Antonia Jaster will slip into the character of Alexander von Humboldt. African tulip tree a flowery eye-catcher The African tulip tree originates, as the name implies, from Africa and is native approximately between the twelfth southern and twelfth northern latitudes.

However, it has also become a popular ornamental tree in other countries because of its beautiful flowers, some of which have gone wild. It is therefore also known in Colombia, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, Hawaii, Sri Lanka and

Luzia - the return of Cirque du Soleil

The name of Cirque du Soleil's new show, Luzia, is a fusion of the Spanish words for light and rain (luz and lluvia), and that's exactly what the audience expects.

From an old movie set they are taken into the sea, a surreal journey between dreams and reality, staged by the Swiss circus director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Breathtaking acrobatics, special effects and a certain bit of humour merge into a show that captivates the audience and brings water directly into

the circus tent for the first time. It is a show in which traditional circus art meets modernity and combines both worlds. "A world in which light gives peace to the spirit and rain to the soul," is how the spectacle is described. The renowned circus will be performing at ExpoMeloneras in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria from July 7 to August 23.

Mafia boss arrested in Gran Canaria As part of Operation Neve di Marzo, the Spanish National Police, in close cooperation with the Italian Carabinieri, have arrested a dangerous mafia boss in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

The suspect is considered the head of the mafia clan called La Cuarta Mafia from Vieste in the Apulia region on the Adriatic coast. He is particularly known for his high potential for violence and the cruelty of his members. They use heavy weapons such as the AK-47 or

Kalashnikovs to achieve their goals and assert themselves against opponents.

The head of the gang was sought via an international arrest and extradition order, in connection with trading in cocaine, hashish and marijuana. He is also accused of being a link between his clan and other mafia groups.

On behalf of the Italian authorities, the Spanish National Police also searched the suspect’s home and seized any evidence.

Millions in aid for forest fire victims The Gran Canaria Island Council has received a total of 91 applications for compensation from owners whose homes were damaged or destroyed during last summer's devastating forest fires.

For weeks, the technical staff examined the individual damages and circumstances. Recently, the Island Council announced that it is providing €1.8 million to repair the damage caused. The grant will be independent of the individual's personal financial situation. "We want normality to return to the summit region as soon as possible," said Antonio Morales, Island President.

Most of the damaged houses, 35 in total, were in the borough of Artenara, followed by Tejeda (29), Gáldar (18), Agaete (3), Valleseco and San Mateo (2) as well as Guía and Moya, with one each. The worst damage occurred in Arte-

The Gran Canaria Island Council Environmental Department, led by Inés Jiménez, recently announced the cataloguing of the 85 most prominent trees on the island.

A total of 273 specimens were reported by the local councils, of which 85 were recently selected as special features, whether for their particular beauty, for scientific or scenic reasons, or because of their age. Most specimens exceed the 100-year-old mark and one has had its roots in Gran Canaria for as long as 400 years. Almost every borough on the island has such tree giants and beauties to offer.

In the catalogue, those interested can discover where to find them and whether they can be visited.

Most of the trees, 52 out of 85, are on private land. A total of 21 can still be visited and a further 20

are visible at least from outside the premises where they can be found.

The island council also thanked the owners for their cooperation. Each tree mentioned receives its own profile, in which its basic data, its general condition as well as possible protective measures are noted.

Age can be so beautiful This is true, at least, for some giant trees, which can fill the observer with awe. The oldest trees in Gran Canaria are the wild olive tree, Acebuche de Llano Parra, which stands in Guía and the juniper tree, Sabina de Tirma. Both are proudly 400 years old. Only slightly younger, is the pine tree, Pino Cassandra at the Presa de Las Niñas reservoir, which dates back 380 years. There is an ancient legend which surrounds this tree, about the witch Cassandra who is said to have made a

tree of Pajar, which has a trunk circumference of a proud 12.5 metres and a 40 metre crown. The laurel tree on the Finca de los Jorge impresses with its equally magnificent 40-metre crown. Diabetes in the Canaries: Risk factors The Canary Islands face a general alert due to the concurrence of high risk factors, such as poverty, obesity and diabetes, all of which are interrelated and for which the Archipelago is a leader in Spain.

Around 300,000 Canarians are diabetic, of whom 70,000 are still undiagnosed. Of these, 92 per cent suffer from type II diabetes. This chronic metabolic disease, which is characterised by insulin resistance, used to be known as adultonset diabetes. Today, this term no longer corresponds to reality as more and more young people are suffering from diabetes. Both genetic predispositions and environmental influences are responsible for the development of the disease, experts warn.

Above all, they blame a cycle consisting of poverty, obesity and diabetes for these record figures, especially affecting low-income families living on the margins of society who mainly eat cheap inadequate products that are rich in sugar, salt and saturated fats. These foods are rich in calories but low in nutrients, and this promotes obesity. In addition, people move less and less, making yet another step towards an unhealthy lifestyle. Julián González, president of the Canary Islands Association for Diabetes (Fadican), advocates more education.

Children enjoy exercise from an early age - parents should encourage this urge

"We must teach people a healthier way of life early on, if possible in schools. Exercise and a balanced diet can prevent diabetes," he explains. He also considers early diagnosis to be a very important factor in counteracting diabetes faster and more efficiently. In the beginning, a change in lifestyle can help to bring diabetes under control.

And he calls for greater control: "A little more sugar means that our people in the Canary Islands suffer three to five times more complications because they are poorly controlled," warns the expert. This is not the only problem for those affected, because the disease can lead to secondary diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attacks, kidney failure and impaired vision.

"Around 25 per cent of the health budget, around three billion euros, is already being spent on the treatment of diabetes and the resulting secondary diseases. People who develop diabetes at an early age will lose quality of life and performance. For this reason, the experts recommend taking countermeasures in good time, taking preventive action and providing information. One starting point is the schools where healthy nutrition and exercise should be promoted.

School sport is important for children in whose family homes movement and common enterprises play no large role. It is even better if everyone sets off together, spends time together and moves, it doesn't cost much to do this.

In the Canary Islands there is a widespread network of children's and fitness centres where the young and old can enjoy themselves free of charge. Fishing for Tenerife campaign The promotional campaign Fishing for Tenerife, launched by the Tenerife Island Council’s department for agriculture, livestock and fisheries, began in mid-November at the Puerto de la Cruz Market and since then, has visited several locations around the island.

The initiative aims to promote the consumption of local fish products during the festive season with a series of training workshops on preparing Christmas recipes with fish, and tastings of local fish which will be provided at a food truck.

Apart from promoting the consumption of local fish, this programme of activities aims to raise awareness of the collective brand Pesca Artesanal, which seeks to combat poaching, protect the island’s natural fishing resources and offer high quality, mature fish for consumption.

36 tonnes of asphalt on the coast For around two and a half months, since mid-August, the Tenerife Environmental Authority, led by Isabel García, has been cleaning the coast of the Malpaís de Güímar Nature Reserve to remove more than 36 tonnes of asphalt-like pollution. Some €165,000 were invested in the clean-up operation.

The pollution was caused over decades by the solidification of oil residues, which for many years were discharged into the sea by ships and freighters and deposited on rocks and stones along the coasts. A veritable oil-induced garbage dump was

created. “Today we have much stricter controls, so it is no longer so common for oil residues to reach the coast and pollute it. This clean-up operation has brought a great deal to the reserve and given back its value to this coast, which is characterised by the cooled lava flows,” explained the Environment Councillor. The deposits on the stones and the already rugged terrain have made the work extremely difficult. Nevertheless, they have tried to influence the landscape as little as possible, to make it more hygienic and to offer the flora and fauna better environmental conditions. y

Awards for the best theses In mid-November, the Loro Parque Foundation awarded prizes for the best theses in the scientific disciplines at the University of La Laguna. A total of €6,000 in prize money was distributed.

Half of this amount was distributed specifically to biology students and the other half to students in environmental science, chemistry, physics and mathematics, for which four prizes were awarded, of €1,200, €800, €600 and €400 respectively.

A total of 36 papers were submitted of such high quality that it was very difficult to make a decision, according to Dr. Javier Almunia, Director of the Foundation. Some of the students went to great lengths to take samples at different points on the island. They analysed data and did experimental work without outside economic support. "In this sense, the award ceremony is a form of compensation for this effort," explained Dr. Almunia. "Also the fact that we received 20 per cent more work than last year shows

With this appeal, councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo addresses the inhabitants of Adeje. The borough’s tap water is regularly checked on a weekly basis and analysed in laboratories.

All the samples taken since 2017 have been 100 per cent suitable for human consumption. After Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Adeje is the borough in the Canary Islands where water quality is the second most frequently analysed. Based on the positive figures, Bencomo advises the public and hotel guests to consume water more sustainably.

Tap water is cheaper, healthy and of good quality. In addition, a considerable amount of disposable plastic bottles could be saved.

Currently, 72.4 per cent of the public is supplied with a mixture of desalinated seawater and water from the reservoirs. About 27.5 per cent get their drinking water exclusively from the reservoirs.

According to the councillor, the good drinking water quality has also been achieved through the investments made by AqualiaEntemanser in the supply and treatment network in recent years. Spices are often attacked by mould fungi unnoticed

The Spanish consumer protection organisation OCU recently warned of mycotoxins caused by moulds. According to their investigations, the toxins are found in about 70 per cent of spices.

Among the most infested are paprika powder, nutmeg, cayenne pepper and piri-piri. Together with its sister organisations in Belgium and Portugal, OCU has tested 126 samples for twelve different mycotoxins. The toxins were detected in 77 per cent of

the pepper varieties and almost half of all nutmeg samples. In two cases the exposure was even higher than the legal maximum.

The European food safety authority, Efsa, also warned of the toxins in cereals, dried fruits, nuts and spices. However, they are also generally found in moulds on groceries. Aflatoxins, ochratoxin A and Fusarium toxins are particularly dangerous.

The United Nations World Agricultural and Food Organisation (FAO) is also aware of the problem.

According to their studies, aflatoxins are found mainly in maize, peanuts, rice, dried figs, cocoa, vegetable oils and spices. Ochratoxin A has been found in cereals, pulses, coffee, beer, wine, grapes, cocoa, nuts and dried fruits. Mostly, mycotoxins are produced by mould during growth or directly before or after the harvest. Mycotoxins are associated with the development of cancer, oestrogen, kidney and metabolic disorders, as well as genetic damage. The infestation of spices is usually not detectable with the naked eye.

Consumer protectors therefore advise consumers to refrain from eating food if it changes colour or has a strange smell. They also require labelling to show where the food comes from. Mycotoxins are usually produced in a humid and warm climate. For this reason, nutritionists assume that moulds are increasingly entering food unnoticed due to the warming caused by climate change.

According to the consumer protectors, keeping to a balanced and varied diet is the best way for consumers to protect themselves from y excessive concentration.

Parkinson's disease and its consequences More than just trembling

Parkinson's is a disease of the central nervous system. Typical symptoms are movement disorders such as stiff muscles, slowing movement, trembling and an unstable posture.

The disease generally starts after the age of 50 and it usually progresses slowly. Parkinson's disease is still incurable, but there are therapeutic options. Normally medication is used.

The four main classic symptoms of Parkinson's disease are: Brady kinesis, rigor, tremors and postural instability. Brady kinesis means that patients move slower and less. Getting up, walking and turning causes difficulties.

Sometimes it is hardly possible to start moving, as a blockage of movement occurs. The posture is often bent, and walking consists of small steps. One turn requires many intermediate steps, gestures and facial expressions decrease, and the face acts like

a mask. The voice becomes quieter and more monotonous, the speech more unclear. The affected person has difficulties with eating and often chokes.

Rigor is a stiffness of the muscles.

Every movement seems to take place against a tough resistance.

Often the neck and shoulder muscles are affected first. A component of this rigor is the so-called cogwheel phenomenon. If, for example, a patient tries to stretch the angled arm, the extremity follows

In Parkinson's Disease, the hands, and later also the feet, often tremble unilaterally and slowly, usually at rest. This often disappears during sleep or movement. Medical practitioners understand postural instability to be disturbances of the postural and positional reflexes. Normally they enable the body to maintain balance. If these reflexes are disturbed, sudden movements - for example due

to an unexpected impact - can no longer be absorbed. The gait becomes unsteady overall, and those affected tend to fall.

Diffuse muscle and joint pain, especially in the shoulder-arm area, is common and can be caused by muscle stiffness and limited mobility. The sebaceous glands on the face often produce excessive amounts of sebum over the course of time and lead to the socalled oily face. Temperature and circulation regulation, bladder and intestinal function, and potency can be disturbed. In some cases, symptoms of dementia also appear over time. In Parkinson's disease, special nerve cells in the so-called black substance (substantia nigra) in the brain die off. This leads to a lack of dopamine. This nerve messenger substance, together with other messenger substances, is involved in movement control.

The dopamine deficiency upsets the sensitive balance of the messenger substances.

Doctors differentiate between four types of Parkinson's disease: 1. Idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome (IPS): Around 80 per cent of all Parkinson's patients suffer from it. The cause is unknown, although genetic and environ-

mental influences, such as pesticides, are being discussed. When people talk about Parkinson's disease, they usually mean idiopathic Parkinson's syndrome.

2. Genetic forms of Parkinson's syndrome: In very rare cases, Parkinson's disease is partially inherited and can occur early in life. There are changes in the genes that lead to a family history of Parkinson's disease.

3. Parkinson's syndromes in the context of other diseases that lead to a loss of nerve cells, for example Lewy body dementia (atypical Parkinson's syndromes).

4. Symptomatic (secondary) Parkinson's syndromes: The symptoms are the result of other causes, for example by drugs such as neuroleptics or calcium antagonists, a craniocerebral trauma or poisoning.

In the early stages of Parkinson's disease, a diagnosis is often difficult. First indications can be a reduction in the clarity of the handwriting, a disturbed smelling ability, strong muscle tensions, difficulties with everyday activities such as brushing teeth, buttoning up clothes or computer work.

Over time, however, the effect of certain anti-Parkinson drugs can decrease. Therefore, an adjustment of the medication is necessary at certain intervals. Drugs

The stem cells would be transformed into new, functional nerve cells in the patient's brain or at least compensate for deficits.

This approach sounds promising, but is still in the research phase.

Experts believe that there is still insufficient research into what stem cells actually do in the brain. y

By Chris Todd Always expect the unexpected with CD Tenerife, that is the golden rule. Although that saying can probably be attached to many football clubs, the blanquiazules seem to take it to the extreme.

When you think they may go on to win and complete the elusive two games on the trot (Tenerife have failed to win back to back matches since March 2018,a disheartening 19 months ago) they either draw

or lose. When you least expect it they pull off a great result, and that has been the case recently.

The last few weeks have been chaotic and alarming at the club. The results have not been good so far this season under new manager López Garai but after securing a decent draw against runaway leaders Cádiz, everyone expected him to keep his job for a while longer. But President Miguel Concepcion had other ideas and minutes after the final whistle, López was sacked. So that makes it an

incredible 19 managers in the past 14 seasons under the current President.

The news that he made the decision against the judgement of the Director of football, Victor Moreno, and that he will also choose his own new manager, probably means that Moreno will be out soon as well. So that will be seven directors of football hired and fired in the last 14 years. There is little stability at the club as project after project is binned. Not having a

One thousand athletes registered for the Transvulcania The list is already complete for the Transvulcania 2020 Ultramarathon. A thousand athletes have already registered, with six months to go before the island of La Palma becomes the nerve centre of world trail running on May 9 next year.

The organisation guarantees that the one thousand runners meet the requirement of having finished a mountain race of at least 40 kilometres in the 18 months prior to the event, which guarantees the physical conditions necessary to

attempt to be a finisher in one of the most attractive and demanding races on the international calendar.

However, for those who have not been able to register, all is not lost as Transvulcania has already set up a waiting list for this modality which falls within the prestigious circuit of the Migu Run Skyrunner World Series. Experience says that resignations for different circumstances in the months prior to a major event are not unusual.

The first skippers of the MiniTransat, a regatta that runs from La Boulangère via Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Le Marin in the Caribbean, arrived in the middle of November, just twelve days after setting off from Gran Canaria.

A total of 78 boats with a maximum length of six and a half metres had made the big Atlantic crossing a challenge. After twelve days, two hours, 27 minutes and seven seconds, François Jambou of the BFR

The only Canarian who took part in the regatta was Miguel Ángel Rondón from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He reached Le Marin last Friday, exactly one week after the winner. He reached his destination after 19 days, 15 hours and 16 minutes, and he was not the last. However, the last strag-

glers were also expected at the finish on Friday. The principle of the regatta is: A skipper, a boat and an ocean. During the last two weeks the only connection to the mainland was a daily radio report, which gave the sailors information about the weather conditions and the expected meteorological developments for the next 48 hours as well as the distance to the destination of the individual participants. Madzoo Festival in Maspalomas On the bank holiday on December 6, the DJ Claptone will be in San Bartolomé de Tirajana in the open-air cultural space, Open Air Espacio Cultural. The best artists have previously inspired those at the Madzoo Festival and made the crowd dance and freak out.

Last year, around 5,000 people flocked to the Barranco Cañon del Águila, right next to the Sioux City theme park, from all the islands, the Peninsula and from twelve different nations.

The festival will come to life again from 3pm to 1am with a colourful DJ mix. One of the main stars this year is the Berlinbased DJ and producer Claptone.

Bikini Pop 2020 with Dani Fernández

Spanish singer-songwriter Dani Fernández is the first artist to have confirmed his participation in the Bikini Pop 2020 festival which will be celebrated on May 23 at the Infecar exhibition centre in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The artist will present his ‘Incendios’ tour during the festival. His two hits Disparos and Te esperaré toda la vida are among the most played songs on Spanish radio stations. His album Incendios inspires with detailed melodies and lyrics with universal messages. After its release, it quickly shot up to second place in the sales chart and was listened to digitally millions of times. It was also nominated for the Los 40 Music Award. Concert tip: Latonius & Praise Theory

As part of the 14th Canaries Gospel Festival, the American gospel artist and choir director Latonius will perform at the Teatro Víctor Fernández Gopar El Salinero in Lanzarote’s capital Arrecife on November 30.

Latonius was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Los Angeles in a family of musicians. After living in Hamburg for several years, he moved to Tenerife, where he has lived since 2015 when he founded
