Auto braking: a quantum leap for road safety It’s a familiar tale. You’re travelling in slow-moving traffic when, before you can react, the car in front stops suddenly. You slam on the brakes but it’s too late and there’s a sickening crunch as bumpers meet. It’s a minor collision, but getting the cars repaired will take time and most likely push up your insurance premium come renewal, and then there’s the everpresent threat of whiplash claims. Such accidents could soon be a thing of the past, for those driving new cars at least, thanks to Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). It’s a system that uses radar, lidar (laser) or video technology to warn the driver of an impending frontal collision before priming the brakes and eventually performing an emergency stop. And it’s not only in low-speed impacts where AEB has the potential to improve road safety. Certain versions also work from higher speeds and can even detect pedestrians and apply the brakes if an impact is imminent. The human and financial benefits are huge, with a study by the European Commission suggesting that widespread adoption of AEB could reduce accidents by up to 27 per cent, potentially saving 8,000 lives a year, not to mention between £3.9 billion and £6.3 billion. Not only that, but Philippe Jean of the EC, said: “Our studies indicate that the resulting reduction in congestion due to accidents would represent an economic value of about €100 million (£78.5m) in Germany alone.” He believes the technology is so effective that he has announced that commercial vehicles will be required to have AEB fitted to gain European Type Approval from November 2013, a strategy that’s also under consideration for passenger cars. Yet even with the clear benefits, widespread takeup from manufacturers has been slow, particularly considering Volvo introduced AEB on its XC60 in 2008. Euro NCAP, the crash test organisation, says that the technology is still not available on 79 per cent of cars on sale in Europe. In order to address this, Euro NCAP has announced it will include AEB in its safety assessment from 2014, and that it will be “practically impossible” for models not carrying it to obtain the maximum five-star rating. The idea is that a manufacturer would need to spend so much additional money to improve passive safety that it would be cheaper to fit an AEB system.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP, said: “We don’t want to force them [car makers] into this immediately, but we’ve made it very clear that the best way to ensure a five-star rating from 2014 is to have AEB on the vehicle.” Further good news for motorists is that insurers have stated that cars fitted with AEB could have their ratings reduced by up to four groups by the end of 2012. “About 90 per cent of all crashes are below 20mph,” says Matthew Avery, Head of Research at Thatcham, the UK safety and security research centre. “Risk is obviously based on frequency as well as severity, and whiplash claims tend to come when crashes are between about 5 and 20mph. “That’s where the bulk of whiplash injuries occur, therefore systems specifically targeted in that area are something that insurers will really be keen on.” Audi, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, Lexus, Mercedes and VW already offer AEB. However, with no guidelines for how it should operate (such as from what speeds and whether it should merely warn the driver of an impending impact or actually initiate braking), it’s not as straightforward for buyers as ticking an “AEB” box on the options list. In an attempt to simplify matters, Euro NCAP divides AEB systems into three groups. First are City systems, which only work below 30kph (19mph), then Inter-Urban systems which work above that speed and are designed to avoid the kind of nose-to-tail collisions that can bring a motorway to a stop, and finally Pedestrian systems. “We are very limited with these,” says Ratingen of the pedestrian systems. “In fact only Volvo and Lexus are offering them. But that’s going to be quite different in a few years from now.” Clearly progress is being made, but motorists planning to enquire about AEB might be frustrated to learn that no manufacturer actually calls it that. For Audi it’s “Pre Sense Front Plus”, while Honda uses “Collision Mitigation Brake System”, Mercedes “Collision Prevention Assist” and Volvo “City Safety”. Ratingen says, “Our first mission is to make these systems more known to the consumer, to make sure they understand the benefits. “Our second goal is to make sure that the best system wins and is supported the most within the industry and then we can get standardisation, including a name that everybody understands.” ARTICLE : TELEGRAPH.CO.UK
