A new ‘Drop-in’ Centre has been opened in Jalon Valley by the charity HELP. Casa de Animo in Alcalali has opened as an advice and social centre, to serve anyone living in the Vall de Pop, whatever their age or nationality. The Centre at present opens every Tuesday morning from 10 to 1 pm., but from 4th November it will also open on Sunday afternoons. Most of those who attend are from the British ex-pat community, and appreciate the chance to sit and chat in an environment which is not a bar or café. Information is also on hand about the everyday problems, such as the filling out of forms. British Consul Paul Rodwell will officially open the premises next month. Volunteers are needed, as it is obvious from its initial success that the Centre is going to grow and develop, and if anyone would like to volunteer their services either at the Centre or at HELP’s charity shops in Jalon Valley or Alcalali they can call the help line on 659 624 643. Via Park II in Playa Flamenca has been re-opened by Concejal Pedro Mancebo with Councillors Marta Campillo, Emeterio Navarro and Antonio Bernabeu. In a statement Mancebo said ‘The refurbishment of this park means that now it is in excellent condition for everyone to enjoy. The park was left by the former government team in a deplorable condition, with many dangers for children and unsuitable for use by the residents. The improvement work has been carried out by the Municipal maintenance crews from the Ayuntamiento’s Parks and Gardens Department. Furthermore, these improvements have been carried out using existing materials that were in stock at the Municipal deport.’ The improvements include refurbishment of the children’s play area, expansion of the Petanca courts from three courts to six, installation of new benches, new litter bins and dog excrement bins.

There are now a sufficient number of residents on the Camposol urbanisation in Mazarron to allow for a second group action. This has been confirmed by the legal and surveying professionals who were appointed by residents to compile the first action. Mark Paddon, the Building Surveyor appointed for the first action, said that he had observed ‘a clear process of progressive structural movement affecting many properties.’ ‘To initiate a second case is even more urgent as there are just a couple of
years of ‘Decenal Insurance’ cover remaining on most of the properties. Under Spanish law it is necessary to formally report the issues within a set period of time after which the defects were noticed. This means that the window of opportunity for owners to make a claim for repair, rebuild or recompense is closing fast, and should a property become unsafe, under Spanish law it is possible that the owners might be faced with a demolition bill. A decision has to be made fast by those who are affected by slow but progressive structural failure of their properties.’ A meeting is to be held imminently on Camposol, and the surveyor and legal team will be on hand to answer any questions about the process involved. Alicante THE BRITISH Consulate in Alicante has announced plans for a number of events during the autumn months as part of the ConeXiones programme aiming to help facilitate joint working and integration, and to help support British nationals living in the local area. The first event is called ‘ConeXiones Social’ and will look at how local charities can work with Social Services in supporting vulnerable British nationals living in the Alicante area. On 30th October in Calpe an event entitled ‘ConeXiones in the Community’ will offer British nationals living in the north of the Alicante province information regarding consular services, access to healthcare and living in Spain. The final event, ‘ConeXiones Violencia Domestica’, will be specifically to help volunteers and professionals to understand how to access the resources that exist to support victims of domestic violence. Saucepan-banging protests from Madrid to New York
Another massive protest in cities throughout Spain – although this time mimicked by similar ones in other European countries – saw thousands of people take to the streets on Saturday banging saucepans. Under the slogan ‘global noise’, they chanted, ‘we do not owe, so we will not pay’. According to a report by thinkspain.com, they were clamouring against tax hikes and cutbacks designed to mop up government deficits caused by politicians’ overspending and high wages, and mismanagement on the part of banks, as well as European Union-imposed austerity measures which look set to worsen the already dire unemployment situation in the country. Sevilla, Valencia, Murcia, Vigo (Galicia), Santander (Cantabria), Zaragoza (Aragón), Barcelona and Gijón (Asturias) Asturias saw the largest demonstrations after that of Madrid, which started at the EU headquarters before heading to the Puerta del Sol and finally to the Plaza Neptuno. At least 12 people stripped off naked whilst others took off all bar their underwear and stood in a huge circle, wrapping themselves in cellophane. They say the State debt was not caused by the general public, but by those in power, and yet it is the general public rather than those in power who are having to pay for it out of their own pockets. They chanted the usual messages of ‘people united will never be beaten’; ‘hands in the air, this is a hold-up’; and ‘this is not a recession, it’s a scam and a fraud’. Protesters are calling for an immediate halt to cutbacks, tax increases and privatisation of public
services, for the labour reform – which will make it easier and cheaper for companies to sack staff, even hard-working ones and even where the firm is financially sound – as well as a moratorium on the repayment of the State deficit at least until an audit of the general public’s economic situation is carried out, the creation of a ‘public-sector bank’ and for toughening up of criminal and civil penalties for politicians and bank managers who have created the State debt through fraud, corruption or general bad handling of finances and the economy. In Valencia, outside the city hall, demonstrators carried banners and chanted slogans to the effect of being unable to afford saucepans and frying pans – which they banged loudly; being fed up of forming part of the so-called ‘neither-nor’ generation, known in Spanish as la generación ni-ni (ni trabaja, ni estudia, or ‘neither works nor studies’) and calling for an immediate audit of the public debt. Those who took part in the demonstrations throughout the country were of all ages, from young children to the elderly – the so-called iaioflautas – elderly protesters, literally translated as ‘granny/ granddad flautists’ – carried banners calling for the government to stop destroying the future for their children and grandchildren. The Global Noise gathering was organised by Spain’s 15-M movement – so-named because it started with on-street camps and sit-ins on May 15 last year, a week before the local elections across the nation – and by the USA-based Occupy Wall Street movement, who carried out a similar demonstration by banging saucepans and frying pans in New York.

Multi-millionaire investors thrive despite the recession Spain’s multi-millionaires do not appear to have suffered as a result of the recession – quite the opposite, according to figures released by the Institute of National Statistics (INE). Those who belong to so-called ‘investor clubs’, or SICAVs, have watched their wealth increase this year by anything up to 50 per cent. Yet the average Spanish resident’s disposable income has gone down by 3.2 per cent in the last four months, and as at the end of 2011, nearly 22 per cent of the country was living in genuine poverty. The rise in multi-millionaires’ income is partly due to the fact that SICAVs have preferential fiscal treatment – only paying one per cent in company tax or Impuesto sobre Sociedades, compared to 25 per cent for small and medium enterprises and 30 per cent for national and multi-national firms. SICAVs must also have at least 100 members and a minimum start-up capital of 2.4 million euros. The largest of these in Morinvest, managed by the BBVA and in which the well-known businesswoman Alicia Koplowitz is a member, followed by Allocation, linked to the Pino family which owns Ferrovial, the rail board. And the SICAV which Rosalía Mera – joint founder of Inditex, along with Amancio Ortega – is involved with is the third-largest and its capital has increased by seven per cent in twoand-a-half years to 341 million. Morinvest has seen its capital rise from 440 million to 511 million in the same period of time.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) went up by 1% in September primarily because of the VAT rise, to give a year-on-year rise of 3.4%, seven points above the August rate and one point below what was expected according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The 3.4% year-on-year inflation rate for September is the highest rate this year, and the highest since May 2011, when inflation stood at 3.5%. The sharp price rises in September has made it even more complicated to reevaluate state pensions, which use the year-on-year CPI in November as their point of reference. The Government has not yet confirmed
whether or not it will compensate pensioners for the deviation in inflation (pensions only rose by 1% and the CPI will be much higher than this) and have gone no further than to say they are looking at the matter. Compared with August, the CPI rose a full point because of the increased prices of clothing, footwear, fuel, cars and medicines. Leisure and culture were two other areas that saw their CPI increase by 1.4 points, to 1.2%, because of price rises in cultural services, and, to a lesser extent, in toys, games, newspapers, magazines and communications (due to a rise in the cost of telephone services).
Ryanair Boss Denies Toddler Low Fuel Risks Dies After Ryanair’s Chief Executive Michael O’Leary has dismissed claims that his airline is risking more emergency landings because pilots are not being allowed to carry sufficient fuel. Three Ryanair planes had to make emergency landings in Valencia in July when fuel was low but in an interview with HARDTalk, Mr O’Leary said that his airline complied fully with EU rules on fuel and that claims made by an anonymously quoted pilot that there could be more emergency landings were “lies”. O’Leary claimed that his airline had only had to make three emergency landings in the past 18 months out of a total of over a million flights, adding that although such landings are not commonplace, they are not unheard of either. He also blamed “very difficult” weather conditions in Madrid on the day in question for the emergency landings in Valencia. He went on to say that Ryanair’s fuel policy had been assessed by an independent body, which had confirmed that it complies with all European fuel regulations. When pressed about the airline’s continual and incessant cost-cutting exercise, O’Leary denied that was the case, saying that he would not have invested over nine billion euros in putting together Europe’s youngest and most upto-date fleet or in establishing six maintenance facilities around Europe, if his only intention was to shave costs. “Ryanair’s safety record,” he concluded, “is on a par with the safest airlines in Europe. Not the average, but the safest.”

Being Run Over By School Bus
An 18-month-old girl died today after being run over by a school bus at the entrance to a school car park in the Chapinería district of Madrid. The accident occurred at 13.48 hours today at the entrance to the Colegio e Instituto Santo Ángel de la Guardia in Chapinería (pictured). Sources within the emergency services confirmed that the toddler had died as the result of a massive brain trauma. Paramedics were quickly on the scene, but could do no more than confirm the little girl’s death and provide support to her family. Initial investigations have shown that the bus was reversing when it ran the toddler over. Witnesses said that at the moment the accident occurred, the little girl had run away from the relatives who were with her at the school gate.

Police identify body of German woman washed away in Murcia floods
According to the local authorities, 27-year-old Gill, who lived in the Los Jarales area of Lorca, disappeared whilst driving her car towards Puerto Lumbreras. Her car was swept away in a flash flood, and deposited several kilometres away in the riverbed. The victim’s car was found on September 30th and police with sniffer dogs, firefighters and volunteers have been searching for the missing drivers ever since, but the huge amount of mud and debris swept into the river bed by the torrential rain made the work of rescuers extremely difficult. The woman’s body was eventually found on Saturday by some walkers in

Spain’s basketball players have been slammed for ‘trashing their apartments’ following their gold-medal loss in the London Olympics to the U.S. Manager Sergio Scariolo’s team racked up more than 11,000 Euros in damages to their two London 2012 rooms after the 107-100 loss, it was revealed Thursday. The exact nature of the damage has not yet been confirmed, but the Spanish media has condemned the actions as “despicable” and “disrespectful”. And a source within the Spanish Basketball Federation, which has officially denied any knowledge of the vandalism, said: “The leaving parties are usually a regular thing when players finish a tournament. After living together for six weeks, preparing and competing, they have it. According to the data collected by the CEO, 74.1% of those inter viewed were in favour of holding a referendum on independence for Catalonia, whilst 19.9% said they were against the idea. A vote held in the Congress of Deputies yesterday, however ruled out any possibility of this referendum being held legally. The PP, PSOE and UPyD all voted against a motion to allow the Generalitat de Cataluña to call a referendum. baby theft: María Gómez Valbuena Had ‘Absolute Power’ With Regard To Adoptions Five doctors have confirmed today before the magistrate investigating the alleged theft of a baby girl from Madrid’s Clínica Santa Cristina in 1982, that the nun María Gómez Valbuena, known as “sor María”, had almost exclusive responsibility for handling adoptions and had absolute power, according to a report from ThinkSpain. All the doctors - Ana Elisa López Delgado, María Rosa Acero de Pablo, María Teresa del Olmo Mombiedro, Carmen Sánchez Calvo and Olga Fadón Pérez - acknowledged that the hospital had a private area where mothers who supposedly wanted to give their babies up for adoption were taken. They stated that “Sor María” was responsible almost exclusively for handling the administration involved in all the adoption cases and was free to come and go in the private area, amongst the cribs and incubators, without anyone challenging her presence. Three of the five witnesses confirmed that the nun was almost totally autonomous within the clinic, but that the department heads and administrative directors must have known what was going on within the heirarchical chain of command in a public maternity hospital. made a formal accusation against her for taking away her newborn baby girl at the Clínica Santa Cristina in 1982.
After giving evidence today, Olga Fadón, who worked as a doctor in the neonatal department at the Clínica Santa Cristina for 30 years, told members of the press that she had “never” noticed anything “strange”, nor seen any mother cry, nor did she see any couple come in without a baby and leave with a baby in their arms. “Sor María” was “powerful”, stressed Olga Fadón, before going on to explain that “whatever she did was considered the right thing to do”, and that “she, and she alone, was the one who looked after all the adoptions”, adding “adoptions have always been a tricky area”. The doctor also recognised that “it was a totally different Spain to the one we know today, and women didn’t know much about their rights”, but added that she didn’t believe that any mother was “coerced” into handing over their child for adoption. When asked about the possibility of babies being “stolen” from their mothers at the Clínica Santa Cristina, she said she thought it unlikely, because “there were good bosses and everything worked very well”.

Homeless Families in Spain Are Squatting After Eviction
Protest groups in Spain have helped families that were kicked out of their homes by banks find shelter in repossessed, empty apartment buildings. Police moved in quickly in most cases, but in Seville about 30 families are going on six months of illegal occupation. Fifty-four-year old Mercedes Lladanosa is living in a two-bedroom apartment with her daughter and granddaughter. It has hardwood floors and a fancy faucet in the bathroom. But bare light bulbs hang uselessly from the ceiling; the electricity was shut off months ago. And the washing machine is only for show, as the city cut off the building’s access to running water last week. They cook with a gas camping stove. What little furniture Lladanosa has was donated or found in the trash. It is not much - a couch, a bed and a crib. She and more than 100 others have been living like this since May, in this five-story building that was completed three years ago and left empty when the developer went bankrupt. Nearly 40 families moved in with help of members from the 15M activist group, like Antonio Moreno Rosana. “Right now in Spain we have something like 517 evictions a day. The thing is, just in Andalucía I think, there are 116,000 empty houses. It is outrageous that you have got empty houses when people are getting thrown out into the street,” said Rosana. Hundreds of thousands of Spaniards have been evicted from their homes since the housing bubble burst in 2008. Once a house is repossessed by the banks, the owner is still liable for the mortgage,
meaning several generations are being saddled with debt. Rosana said it makes no sense. “We think that, you know, if a bank has an empty house for a year or two years, that should be expropriated immediately. It is like you have it empty? No, you can not have it empty. We are going to put some people in there, if you are going to have it empty,” said Rosana. 15M group protests The 15M movement has tried a few times in Madrid, Barcelona and the Catalonian city of Sabadell to house evicted families in buildings now belonging to banks, but efforts were swiftly defeated by police. Lladanosa and her fellow squatters risk being thrown out any day. Not everyone lives in the building out of absolute necessity, and for some, making a statement is worth the risk. Social worker Montserrat Sanchez lost her job in an immigrant center two months ago and could not pay her rent anymore, so she went back to live with her mother and father, but then left. “I think I have the right, like everyone living in this world, to have my own house and my own place where to stay. And I do not think it is right to go back with my parents. So that is why I came here,” said Sanchez. Lladanosa and others have to haul water from the water fountain installed outside the building by the city (next to garbage bins). Across Europe, as smartphone adoption increases, more consumers than ever are using their mobile devices to interact with QR Codes, according to recent figures from comScore. report by Helen Leggatt QR codes are becoming more commonplace in magazines and outdoor advertising across Europe. Within the EU5 (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom), more than 17 million smartphone users scanned a QR code in the second quarter of 2012, according to comScore. That’s a healthy year-on-year growth of 96%. The growth in some countries is huge. In Spain, 16% of the population scanned a QR code in Q2 2012, up a whopping 218% in twelve months. In the same period, the number of smartphone owners scanning QR codes in Germany rose 128% and, in Italy, 75%. Thriller was the sixth studio album by American recording artist Michael Jackson. It was released on November 30, 1982, by Epic Records as the follow-up to Jackson’s critically and commercially successful 1979 album Off the Wall. Of the nine tracks on the album, 4 of them were written by Jackson himself. Seven singles were released from the album, all of which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Baby Be Mine” and “The Lady in My Life” were the only tracks that were not released as singles. In just over a year, Thriller became and currently remains the best-selling album of all time, with sales estimated by various sources as being between 65 and 110 million copies worldwide. The album won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards at the 1984 Grammy’s. For the album Jackson reunited with Off the Wall producer Quincy Jones. The pair worked together on 30 songs, nine of which were eventually included. The album was recorded at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, California, with a production budget of $750,000. The recording commenced on April 14, 1982 with Jackson and ex Beatle Paul McCartney recording “The Girl Is Mine”, and the album was completed with the final day of mixing on November 8, 1982. Jackson wrote four songs for the record: “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”, “The Girl Is Mine”, “Beat It” and “Billie Jean”. Unlike many artists, Jackson did not write these songs on paper. Instead, he would dictate into a sound recorder, and when recording would sing from memory. Jackson was inspired to create an album where “every song was a killer,” and developed Thriller with that in mind. The ongoing backlash against disco music made it necessary to move in a different musical direction from the disco-heavy Off the Wall, and Jones and Jackson were determined to make an album that would appeal to all tastes and spent weeks looking for a suitable guitarist for the song “Beat It”, a song Jackson wrote. They eventually recruited rock legend Eddie Van Halen. When songwriter Rod Temperton wrote the song “Thriller”, he originally wanted to call it “Starlight” or “Midnight Man” but settled on “Thriller” because he felt the name had merchandising potential. Wanting a notable person to recite the closing lyrics, Jones brought in veteran actor Vincent Price who was an a cq u a i nt a n ce of Jones’ wife, who completed his part in just two takes. Temperton wrote the spoken portion in a taxi on the way to the recording studio. Jones and Temperton said that some recordings were
left off the final cut because they did not have the “edginess” of other album tracks. Thriller refined the strengths of Jackson’s previous album Off the Wall; the dance and rock tracks were more aggressive, while the pop tunes and ballads were softer and more soulful. The album includes the ballads “The Lady in My Life”, “Human Nature”, and “The Girl Is Mine”; the funk pieces “Billie Jean” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’”; and the disco tracks “Baby Be Mine” and “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” which have a similar sound to the material on Off the Wall. “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” is accompanied by a bass and percussion background and the song’s centerpiece, a climaxing African-inspired chant (often misidentified as Swahili, but actually syllables based on Dulua), gave the song an international flavor.
The anti-gang-violence “Beat It” became homage to West Side Story, and was Jackson’s first successful rock cross-over piece. Jackson later said of “Beat It”, “The point is no one has to be the tough guy, you can walk away from a fight and still be a man. You don’t have to die to prove you’re a man”. “Human Nature” is moody and introspective. “The Girl Is Mine” was followed by the hit single “Billie Jean”, which made Thriller a chart-topper. The album won Jackson a recordbreaking eight Grammy Awards in 1984, including Album of the Year. That same year, Jackson won eight American Music Awards, the Special Award of Merit and three MTV Video Music Awards. It is one of only three albums to remain in the top ten of the Billboard 200 for a full year, and spent 37 weeks at number one out of the 80 consecutive weeks it was in the top ten. The album was also the first of three to have seven Billboard Hot 100 top ten singles, and was the only album to be the best-seller of two years (1983–1984) in the US. On August 21, 2009 Thriller was certified 29x Multi-Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of at least 29 million copies in the US. The album topped the charts in many countries, sold 4.2 million copies in the UK, 2.5 million in Japan and went 15× Platinum in Australia. I remember buying the album when it was first released and 30 years on still play the tracks on my shows. It is truly one of the great albums of music history and will give pleasure to many more people for many more years to come. The first Show will be on Saturday 27th October at the Sports Ground in Pinar de Campoverde. The second Show will be on the following Saturday 3rd November at El Rancho Restaurant on the La Marquesa road in between San Miguel de Salinas and Los Montesinos. This is a new venue for APAH with excellent facilities, including a Barbeque pit, which will be providing tasty barbequed food throughout the show. APAH hopes that this way, people will go along to the Show nearest to them, enjoy the day and help to support them in their work of rescuing and rehoming abandoned, abused and neglected dogs and cats throughout the Costa Blanca area. They will also be very welcome to visit more than one Show if they want to!

Cantabile singers performed a concert of Sacred and Secular Music to an appreciative audience at Campoverde Church on Sunday 14th October, in aid of church funds. One innovation during the interval was a poetic interlude, where members of the choir each read a small part of a famous poem, ranging from the ‘Owl and the Pussycat’ through ‘Grey’s Elegy’ to ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling. Attention is now turned to their next concert again at a religious establishment - this time La Siesta Church on 8th December, which is where the choir hold their rehearsals every Friday 2pm. to 4pm.
k9 club winter fashion show
The K9 Club Winter Fashion Show took place on Saturday 13th October at the k9 shop on Urb La Marina. This was to display some of the winter clothes that they have now put in the Charity shop. There were 14 models showing the clothes ranging from coats to evening wear. K9 would like to thank the models which included Cathy Carson and her friends Marion and Nina and many of the volunteers who work hard in the shop. K9 would also like to thank everyone who attended a special thank you to Janet who raised an amazing 134 Euros with the raffle, Dreams Bar who made a donation of 24 Euros a 50 Euro donation was received from a well wisher and Sales in the shop of 183 Euros in total 391 Euros was raised on the day! Last week K9 took in 4 dogs, 1 had a broken leg, and 3 cats. The monies raised will go to help these poor unfortunate animals. RESTAURANTE MARIANO, CAMPOSOL A THURSDAY 18th OCTOBER 2012 MABS Cancer Support Group held a fashion show at Restaurante Vintage in San Javier on Thursday, 11 October which was a total sell out. Despite threatening weather all around, glorious sunshine and blue skies greeted guests and supporters, who settled down with drinks and nibbles to enjoy the forthcoming show. Zigi and her ladies strutted their stuff in some beautiful outfits, from day wear to fine evening wear with matching accessories, all supplied by the MABS Centre in San Javier. Attendees commented on the quality and variety of the clothes modelled and they were all looking forward to buying their favourites when the fashion show ended. A beautiful antique brooch, which had been donated to the MABS Centre, was auctioned by MABS Care Co-ordinator, Barbara Burks, raising 50€ from the highest bidder, Jane Holley, who was delighted. During the interval, MABS Driver Coordinator, Angela Oliver, sang to the audience. “We’d like to thank Zigi and her wonderful ladies who give their time freely to help raise funds for us and Juan and the staff of Restaurante Vintage for such a lovely setting.” said MABS Murcia Director, Lyn Baines. “And we’re extremely grateful to the MABS volunteers and guests for their continuing support; without whom we would not be able to carry on with our work in the Murcia region.” The afternoon raised a total of 592€. Campo Verde Theatre Group will find time in their busy rehearsal schedule to participate again this year in the Pilar de Horadada fiesta procession on Saturday 20th October. The theme this year will be the Rock and Roll Era. and the group will be showing their skills singing, rocking and rolling down the High Street dressed in their colourful costumes and escorted by their very own Big Ben walking clock. The theatre group have been keen participants in the festivities of the town for several years and have always enjoyed integrating into Spanish cultural life. The theatre group received much praise and support from all sections of the community when they recently joined in the San Miguel procession for the first time. Campo Verde Theatre Group is always ready to welcome new members. There are many ways you can contribute in addition to actual performing, from back stage support, scenery and prop making, sewing and costume making, sound and lighting, front of house duties. The group is a very social network and enjoy a good social life in addition to their interest in live theatre. TORREVIEJA ROYAL BRITISH LEGION HONOUR CHARLES HENRY SARGEANT
On Tuesday 8 October, the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion said a fond farewell to a Loyal Member Charles Henry Sargeant (Chas) who died on Wednesday 3 October at the age of 68 Chas who was in the The Green Jackets (now the Rifles Division) was born in East Redford and spent his early years in Germany as his father was a Major in the Green Jackets, but the majority of his childhood was spent in Purley Surrey, While in Northern Ireland he met and married his wife Edith and had three children Mandy, Emma and Jamie. Chas was a real character, loved his music and attended regular reunions, but most of all he loved his classic cars, Arsenal of course and his motorbike, and was a strong member of the Royal British Legion Bikers Division. Those who knew Chas will no doubt remember him as good fun and always laughing; he had a heart of gold and lots of friends. The standards were displayed in respect of Chas´s military service and membership to the Royal British Legion, the standard bearers were: Rick Shiel, Ken Archer and David Laverick, and the Last Post was played by John Atkin. The service was conducted by Pastor Keith Brown, and a tribute was give by his Cousin ColinMacGregor. His son Jamie also thanked everyone for attending and said his father would have been very proud. Chas leaves behind 3 children, 7 Grandchildren and 1 Great Granchild, and his partner of 30 years, Dee.

The ADHOC Theatre Company’s Next production of “Allo Allo” The Full Stage Show will have a cast of 22 + 10 dancers, over 30 performers will take to the stage in total. The costume department have been working flat out, as have the set builders to complete a specially designed set to suit the purpose of the show. Many components have been shipped from the UK to form the integral elements within the set. This is the biggest Production that ADHOC and any of its vastly experienced cast and crew have ever undertaken. To ad a little extra spice to the show ADHOC will be introducing a lot of new faces to the stage, keeping up the reputation of finding new and exciting talent. Totally dance will make their ADHOC Debut in this production. Guiding the new faces are two known actors to theatre goers on the Costablanca, in Jeff & Joan Hall. D GARDENING & COMMUNITY OCTOBER REPORT The Group intended to start its Gardening work on Friday the 28th Sept but as it was raining around 9 am our Gardening Guru Maureen decided to postpone our start date and said that we would start back the following Friday. Wow – What a day the 28th turned out to be. We had seen the weather forecasts, experienced the morning’s rain but no one expected or had ever seen what was to come that afternoon. The Gota Fria and its effect that hit Camposol and a large swathe of southern Spain was beyond even the authorities expectations and has been written about extensively in all our local and regional papers, magazines and of the internet. How did it affect our Camposol D Community. Well firstly it meant that Maureen and Clive were given a welcome break from their daily watering of our plants. That was the positive side. Of course we all know the results of the flood and the resulting damage caused to the rambla bridge. Once again this has been discussed at length and was a major subject during our Citizens Participation Meeting with the Mayor of Mazarron, his deputy and Councillor David Ferdinand. What was particularly pleasing to see was the instant offer of help to the residents of C and D from other residents and friends and the local police force who manned the damaged bridge. Many residents, including myself had relatives and friends who needed to get to the airports for their return flights home. My elderly parents fell into this group and I was given instant help from friends on A. Internet sites, facebook pages and many other media were full of offers of help to those who needed it. A tremendous Community Spirit emerged during the

week following the rain and I believe that our Gardening/Community Group were at the front of this help with many good suggestions and ideas coming through to help others. What has happened since: Our Group did start with our volunteer work the following Friday but a disappointingly low number of volunteers came out that day. WE NEED NEW BLOOD and the return of our many previous volunteers if we are to continue with our work of keeping D as nice as we have made it over the past four years. We do have quite a few reasonably large projects in the pipeline and we wish to get these started asap. Please if you can spare us a couple of hours on a Friday morning, then turn up as indicated on our noticeboard. We have a Quiz Night in Trevi’s on the night of Halloween 31st Oct. Our Christmas Dinner Dance is NOW to be held in the Amopola Hotel in Boleunovo on the 14th Dec and as I write I am told that we have reached our ceiling of 150 guests with all the rooms of the hotel booked for the night. An excellent night with superb food, service and of course Barrington is guaranteed to those lucky to have reserved their tickets. There will be no New Year’s Eve function at the Golf Club as previously announced as the GC is to put on their own function.
The XIX Gala de Deporte of Torrevieja 2012 awards sports persons of Torrevieja for their achievements. There were 54 sportsmen and women nominated from all sports each received a nomination trophy, then the overall winners were chosen: Most promising Male, Female, Coach and Older sports person. The presentation night was held at the Teatro Municipal on Saturday 22 September. The joint winner was Luis Manuel Corchete and his sport is athletics. The nominations come from the sports club that they are members of, each club are asked to nominate a male ,female and older. Its done similar to Pride of Spain you are interviewed at TVT and a short video is done then you collect the nomination award then they read out the best one from each catagory then the Mayor hands the trophies over, Adam thanked his club and coach for helping him and his family. All the winners of there catagories were interviewed live on TVT last week.

Look Good Feel Great new test determines your risk of a deadly allergic reaction A new test to indicate which people are most at risk from life-threatening allergic reactions has been developed by British scientists. The procedure measures levels of an enzyme in the blood which is involved in allergic reactions that can cause potentially fatal anaphylactic shock. Medics hope the test could become the definitive, gold standard test for the diagnosis of severe allergic reactions across the world. One in three Britons suffers from an allergy and the number of cases is rising by five per cent every year. It was developed by the University of Southampton’s Dr Andrew Walls working with doctors at Southampton General Hospital to help combat a rise in serious allergic reactions to such things as peanuts. ‘Allergic reactions to drugs are increasingly common and reactions to food such as peanuts, tree nuts and fruit are also a concern, particularly in children and adolescents,’ said Dr Walls, a reader in immunopharmacology. ‘But reliable tests for establishing the risk of a reaction have not been available, leaving patients vulnerable to serious reactions in the future.’ Levels of an enzyme called CPA3 are considerably higher in the blood of people who are prone to life-threatening allergic reactions compared with those who are not. The level of enzyme can increase rapidly within minutes of the onset of serious allergic reactions, known as anaphylactic shock,
and remain elevated for more than a day afterwards. Using materials developed over a period of years in his research lab, Dr Walls has created a technique to measure these levels in patients and find out who is most at risk. He said: ‘The development of this test should help to determine the proportion of people with a specific allergy who may be at risk of a life-threatening reaction. ‘This advance allows clinicians to be able to understand the vulnerability of these patients, and either ensure they avoid the problem trigger, or provide them with an injection device so that they can self-administer a drug to fight the onset of a shock, vastly reducing their chances of continued serious attacks.’ Dr Mich Lajeunesse, a consultant paediatric immunologist and a member of the clinical research team, said the test will drastically alter the way doctors diagnose. ‘Severe allergic reactions are frequently overlooked by doctors who call it severe asthma instead,’ he said. ‘This test will help doctors recognise these reactions and provide patients with better aftercare and prevention of future allergic reactions.’ He added: If it proves to be as useful as the early trials suggest, it is likely to become the gold standard for diagnosis of severe allergic reactions around the world.’

This is why patients can start to lose their hair within two to three weeks of starting treatment. The drugs can also affect texture and shade, research shows, but hair should regrow three to ten months after treatment has ended. In many cases, medications are thought to affect hair by interfering with its growth cycle, which has three distinct stages. In the growing period, which lasts between three and five years on the scalp, hair grows by around 1cm a month. That’s followed by a shorter, two-week stage, known as the intermediate phase, where the hair follicle is prepared for releasing the hair. In the final, three-month phase — the telogen phase or ‘resting’ phase — the hair stops growing and eventually falls out. After three months, the follicle starts to grow a new hair. Los Palacios Garden Volunteers
to the armed forces, in that this service is an opportunity for all people, from all nations to come together in respect for all their departed loved ones, not just those unfortunate to have fallen in so many wars. There will be no laying of wreaths, instead people are asked to gift a living plant, which will be planted in the park as a sign of hope for the future. Many people already have plants dedicated to loved ones. Many more people enjoy the beauty of this quiet garden. This year November 11th falls on a Sunday. The Ex-servicemen’s Association, who normally hold a Remembrance Sunday Service on Camposol have combined that service with the one in the park. They will provide small wooden crosses and poppies for those who would like them. Their chairman will read the traditional poem ending with “We will remember them”. A live trumpet will sound “The Last Post”, which signals the start of the 2 minute silence. The service will be conducted by Pastor Andrew, and the singers from Wellspring Victory Church. At the end of the service (aprox. 12:15) he will invite those with plants or crosses to place them in the memorial garden.
November 11 - Remembrance Sunday Many countries across the world hold November 11th. as a day of remembrance. Most of them have adopted the 2 minute silence to be observed at the eleventh hour, g.m.t., often in the open air, in parks and public spaces. Camposol joined in this tradition holding the first open air service 5 years ago, in front of the memorial garden in Parque Los Palacios (Camposol A). It is an important feature of this day that at that time people all across the world stand in silence at exactly the same time to remember. Here in Spain that time is 12 noon, which means that the service starts at 11-30 a.m. local time. This service differs slightly from the British Remembrance Sunday, which is dedicated
In previous years we have been lucky with the weather. In the unlikely event that we have British weather this year, the service can still go ahead, thanks to the Camposol Fiesta Committee, who have made a small tent available to protect the equipment. You will still need to bring your own umbrella, and chair. The church singers will continue to sing hymns both during and after the gifting in the memorial garden. Anyone wishing to stay, or join in, will be made welcome. Los Palacios Garden Volunteers are proud that our park is such a suitable venue for this event. We hope that as many people as possible enjoy, and appreciate the ongoing hard work necessary to provide it. New helpers are always needed. We have also lost some of our dedicated workers recently. We will remember them.

EX SERVICE ORGANISATIONS PARADE IN MURCIA
On Sunday 14th October British ex service men and women from The Royal British Legion, The Royal Naval Association, The Royal Marines Association and The Royal Air Force Association along with their wives, partners and friends were invited to take part in a spectacular military parade in Murcia City. The parade was led by the rousing sounds of The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums followed by the standards and flags of each organisation. There followed members of the ex service associations led by our special guests from The Royal Chelsea Hospital in London, Chelsea Pensioners Wayne Campbell, and Arthur (Skippy) Teasdale, looking absolutely resplendent in their bright scarlet tunics. Also Victoria Kilbane a 15 year old Sea Cadet from HMS Wrekin who flew over from England to Parade her Royal Navy Standard. The parade took around 10 minutes as it marched from the park to the re enactment area and everyone looked very smart with their medals glistening in the sunlight. The cheers and applause from the public was fantastic. Parade Marshall Keith Carter said this enthusiasm must have escalated the integration of ex pats and the Spanish community immensely. The parade then continued with the organisers of the re enactment under the auspices of Codex Belix, a Madrid based association that organises historical and authentic battle re enactments. Around 300 of the association then took up positions around the Town Hall area. They were dressed in World War11 military uniforms of German and American soldiers and British Paratroopers and were accompanied by over 30 military vehicles and tanks. When everyone had taken up positions the large sound system echoed with the sound of artilary and tank fire dropping shells. This was the signal for the re enactment of The Battle of Falaise Pocket to commence. The battle which took place between 12 – 21 August 1944 was the decisive engagement of The Battle of Normandy. The battle re enactment lasted approximately 40 minutes with soldiers firing blank ammunition at each other as well as throwing thunder flashes and engaging in hand to hand combat. In all, the parade ranks were increased by over 120 British and Irish ex servicemen as the bond between the Spanish and Expatriate communities was strengthened even further by the military associations. Everyone had a great day out and were most impressed with all that had taken place on the day.

So pigs can’t fly. . . but mice REALLY can sing: Scientists discover rodents can mimic and learn complex sounds
It seems that Bagpuss was ahead of his time! Decades after the pink and white cat and six singing mice first appeared on our TV screens, scientists have shown that mice really can learn songs. Male mice, who use high-pitched love songs to woo females, also change their tune when there is competition around. The findings suggest mice can mimic and learn complex calls and sounds. This ability, known as local learning, had been thought to be limited to people, as well as some birds, dolphins, whales, bats, elephants, sea lions and seals. With mice widely used in medical research, the finding could help shed light on autism and other conditions in characterised by problems in communication. It may also be of interest to generations of Bagpuss fans who, as children,
were fascinated by the mice that lived on the mouse organ and their high-pitched songs. It was already known that male mice whistle or sing when trying to court females but it was assumed that their ultrasonic cries are produced instinctively, with little thought going into the process. However, when the US scientists put males of two different strains were put in a cage together, one gradually adjusted its song so that it sounded more like the other’s. This, the research team from Duke University in North Carolina said, is a hallmark of vocal learning. The discovery that if the animals lost their hearing, they began to sing out of tune, also fitted the definition. Other evidence came from a series of tests which showed similarities between the way the human and mouse brain produces songs. In all, the creatures satisfied the five key tests of vocal learning, the journal PLoS ONE reports. Kurt Hammerschmidt, a German expert, said: ‘This is a very important study with great findings.’ Researcher Erich Jarvis said: ‘Our results show that mice have the five features that scientists associate with vocal learning. ‘In mice, they don’t exist at the advanced levels found in humans and song-learning birds but they are also not completely absent as commonly assumed. ‘If we are not wrong, these findings will be a big boost to scientists studying diseases such as autism and anxiety disorders.’
Spoof Tube stickers ‘brighten journeys’
Guerilla Transport for London stickers with spoof notices for passengers are being plastered on Tube trains and stations. The notices, in the same colour and font as genuine TfL signs, include “No eye contact. Penalty £200” and “We apologise for any incontinence caused during these engineering works”. Others suggest commuters should offer their seats to “drunks less able to stand” and advise: “Peak hours may necessitate you let other people sit on your lap.” A spokesman told the BBC: “It’s a form of rebellion, whether it be due to the current climate of doom and gloom or people wanting to brighten their day.” The stickers, apparently designed to brighten commuters’ daily journeys on the London Underground, are bring celebrated on a Facebook page. However, a spokesman for the British Transport Police branded the stickers “unwanted vandalism that causes criminal damage”.
Geordie accents help plants thrive A gardening expert claims that talking to plants in a Geordie accent helps them thrive more than any other regional pronunciation. Chris Bonnett had staff at his nursery in Essex speak to plants in different accents every day as an experiment. The plants were also played DVDs and CDs of regional soaps and pop stars to help reinforce the different dialects. Each group was placed in a different area of the nursery, near Colchester, and staff took great pains to ensure the accents were never mixed up. Mr Bonnett says the ‘Geordie’ plants, which were subjected to Geordie Shore, Cheryl Cole and Ant and Dec, grew almost 10% more than those in some other groups. He said: “We kept all other variables as constant as possible. So the plants all had the same amount of sunlight, water and nutrients. “By the end of the summer it was clear that the accents had a huge effect. There was, more or less, average growth across the Australian, Liverpudlian, Yorkshire and American groups. “The Geordie and Welsh groups visibly thrived and displayed enhanced growth while the Scottish, Chelsea and Mancunian plants were stunted.”

The Spanish Government’s Council of Ministers has approved the Draft Bill on the Protection and Sustainable Use of the Coastline, amending the Coastal Act 1988, to be submitted to Parliament, according to a report on www.kyero.com

The new legislation will protect the coastline from urban over-development and will generate confidence, increase economic activity and provide legal security to the public and to companies.
In this respect, Miguel Arias Cañete clarified that “there is no amnesty on illegal constructions”, but rather “a clearer and more transparent regulatory framework” is established.
The Vice-President of the Government, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, stated that the amendment “protects our environmental wealth, reconciles environmental protection with sustainable economic activities, will liberate us from urban atrocities and provide us with tools to guarantee and improve the legal security of homeowners on the coast, as well as of those carrying on economic activities such as the beach bars”. In this respect, the Vice-President of the Government indicated that in Spain there are more than 3,000 beach bars “which are a singular feature of our tourist attractions and which provide more than 40,000 jobs in Andalusia alone”. The legislation empowers the Government to suspend unlawful urban activities, increase the protection of the beaches, particularly natural ones, and better defines the area of land-sea public domain, explained the Vice-President. The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, underlined that the new legislation has three objectives: to reinforce protection of the coastline, increase legal security and generate confidence and certainty for homeowners on the coast and for economic activity. Among the measures to protect the coastline, the minister highlighted that the new law reinforces the ban on new buildings. “This law is not laxer or more tolerant, but rather it is a law that will help reinforce the ban on new

The minister explained that the new law introduces the so-called ‘anti-Algarrobico clause’ that regulates the possibility for the Government to suspend illegal urban activities on the coast to avoid irreversible situations, always leaving the last word to the courts. Furthermore, urban beaches are distinguished from natural beaches, increasing the protection for the latter. La Moncloa reported that with regard to the measures to generate legal security, the minister stressed that the scope of the LandSea Public Domain is clarified and citizens are guaranteed access to updated information on their properties and other rights. To that end, assets in the land-sea public domain must be registered in the Property Registry. Citizens may consult whether their land is affected by limitations in the public domain on the Internet. This measure will contribute, argued the minister, “to improving the confidence of foreign investors and help reduce the stock of unsold properties”. Among the measures that aim to facilitate the viability and sustainability of economic activities, the ministers cited the extension of the maximum term of concessions to 75 years. Miguel Arias Cañete stressed that all buildings constructed on the coast illegally will be demolished, such as the El Algarrobico hotel. 1,100 concessions on properties expire in the year 2018, which will result in their demolition. Q: SELLING EXPENSES:WE ARE GOING TO SELL; WILL WE HAVE TO PAY TAX? A. The situation varies depending if you are a resident or non-resident of Spain. (having a certificate of residencia comunitaria is not sufficient proof of this/to find out if you qualify as a Spanish resident consult the tax office or your solicitor) NON RESIDENTS: The capital gains tax rate since 1st of January of 2012 is 21 % of your net profit. The rate is applied to the difference between the acquisition price by purchase (or inheritance) and the sales price. (the prices used are the ones shown on the deeds of acquisition/ inheritance and sale). You’re allowed to apply a reduction to the taxable base: For every year after the second of ownership up to 1996, you are allowed to reduce the taxable base by 11.11%. For every year you have owned the property after 1996, you are only allowed to reduce the taxable base by the annual official inflation which is published each year with the national budget. When you have calculated the net taxable base the rate is 21%. To add to the complication also be aware that the purchaser will retain 3% of the sales price on account of the capital gains tax of the seller and will pay it into the tax office within 30 days. It is then up to the seller to calculate what the real capital gains tax using the calculation above is and then , either claim some back , or pay the difference to the tax office . RESIDENTS: If you are a resident the first thing to look into is (a) The possible total or partial exemption from capital gains tax due to reinvestment (roll-over) and (b) The possible claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old. In both cases there are certain conditions that have to be met to qualify for these exemptions. Consult a solicitor to find out how to qualify. If you do not qualify for any of the above exemptions the rate of tax applied to your profit is 21% for profit up to 6000 euros, 24% for profit between 6001 euros and 24000 euros and 27% ot profit above 24001 euros. Plusvalía tax: this is a local tax on the increase in value of the land , which depends on the valuation established by the rates department. The town hall will happily calculate this for you on presenting title deed and last rates bill. Remember you will not have to pay plusvalía if you have paid plusvalía on the acquisition (by any title ) within the last year. (if a transaction within the last year has been in respect to part of the property you do not pay again in respect to that part) Solicitors fee: This varies depending on the circumstances of the transaction, if their is a tax claim to be made etc. . San Fulgencio maintained their ‘surprise’ lead at the top of the table after a hard fought victory after a somewhat complicated contest against Bigastro. Despite a difficult start to the season, Bigastro started the sharper of the two sides and put the visitors under pressure for the first 20 minutes of the game. A few very dangerous corners were just about cleared by San Fulgencio in the opening exchanges. The league leaders soon calmed down after a nervy start and began to string a few passes together. Then came their first decent sight of goal, Gary Williams fired just over after Carl Kirby’s smart knockdown. Minutes later, the opening goal would arrive from the penalty spot. Jairo Sousa fell to the ground after a rash challenge from the centreback who had been booked seconds before the incident. A somewhat debatable decision, but Marco Aurelio stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to break the deadlock against the run of play. Bigastro pushed forward and had a succession of corners, but it just wouldn’t happen for the strugglers in front of goal. San Fulgencio then eventually started to take control of proceedings and carved out a few very good chances. Firstly, Marco got his toe to a cross but it just evaded the post. Carl then inadvertently blocked Fernando Mora’s goal-bound strike before missing a decent chance of his own, hitting the underside of the crossbar from a few yards out. The elusive second goal arrived just before the end of the half, Fernando Mora taking his time before placing a delightful shot beyond the reach of Bigastro’s goalkeeper. Soon after the beginning of the second

Bigastro eventually got the goal they probably deserved, also from the penalty spot. Jake Ruder’s trailing leg caught the striker’s leg after a clever set-piece. There was nothing ‘Jovi’ could do about the penalty, it was well dispatched right into the corner of the goal. The visitors continued to create openings, but some poor finishing denied the team a bigger win. One of the best opportunities fell to new boy, Vicente, but he couldn’t control Marco’s cross when through on goal. The hosts ended the game well, but they couldn’t cut the deficit and Gary Williams should be incredibly proud of his side’s start to the season. Independent British designer Georgie-May, designs and manufactures her own clothing, shoe and jewellery range as well as creating her own printed clothing and lifestyle brands. A fashion designer will showcase her eco-friendly clothing range on the catwalk just a week before her 21st birthday. Georgie-May will see her creations take centre stage at Liverpool Fashion Week, which kicked off on Monday, October 15. With the event sponsored by Merseyside Waste and Recycling Authority, GeorgieMay’s designs will be introducing ‘the art of the discarded’ with her Trashcan Treasures collection. A clothing line which heavily supports recycling and our hard working charity shops. Being an avid tea drinker, one of her items is a coat made of tea bags, pictured, which she has named Pret-tea Coat. We first knew of Georgie-May’s love of tea when she encouraged the drinking of sustainable teas last year. CAMPO LIFE WITH JENNI....... My girls, Eden and Linzi have recently started at a new Catholic School in Orihuela. Eden was having to change schools anyway, as she was due to go to High School, and like most mothers with children of her age (12), I was very worried about her high school education. Now, I am not going to be popular when I say this, but there is a generation of uneducated children whose parents brought them over when they were between the ages of 9 – 12 thinking they were young enough to learn Spanish and integrate into the Spanish system. Generally speaking, this has not proved to be the case, and although they manage to cope in junior school the leap up to High School, it just too great, and they continue to fail and eventually drop out.. Thankfully many return to the UK where they can go to colleges to finish the education but there are a number that are still trapped. Eden started in the Spanish schools when she was just 3 years old and although intelligent, does find it hard at times. Linzi even though she has been here since a baby,

has struggled, especially last year, with the teacher’s cut in pay and lack in morale, it definitely affected standards. A comment from the Head Teacher at her new school was “The school has let you down¨. This situation will right itself in time as there are almost no new families with children of school going age that are relocating to Spain. Most have returned already, including Eden’s best friend, just last week. I realized that there would have been a problem with my eldest daughter, so I paid for her, at great expense, to attend the British School of Alicante. She obtained her GCSE and A’ level’s enabling her to go to University in the UK, from which she has just graduated with a music degree and is now doing her PGSE to enable her to teach, even though she already teaches privately. This certainly would not have happened has she been educated in the Spanish system and this was my dilemma with my other two.
There was no way in this current economic climate that I could have afforded to pay for them to attend an English private school. The fees have almost doubled and their English is not up to scratch and they would have to be held back a year. It is also debatable whether they would get a decent standard of education anyway – so many of the schools are battling for pupils as parents have either returned to the UK as in the case above, or simply parents cannot afford the fees as in my case plus the curriculum is severely restricted. Even it they could come out with A’ level’s, would they even be able to afford to go to University? The fees are going up every year and they are cutting courses left right and centre. Many graduates, I know personally are working for free, just to get their foot into the door, so for all these reasons, my decision was really weighing heavily on my shoulders. The solution presented itself when talking to my Spanish neighbor (who has both a town house in Orihuela as well as a Finca in the campo), who told me about the school that her children attended, which although private, was subsidized by the government. The standard of education is extremely high to the point where most graduate to go onto University and most importantly it is affordable. Up until now, University is still free here in Spain. Whether or not it is when Eden graduates who knows? But at least she has a fighting chance and she is definitely not going to fail in any year. Linzi I just managed to ´rescue’ in time and her teachers have already identified the problem and have arranged extra lessons for her to catch up, so although not out of the woods completely, we are at least heading in the right direction. Although the education has caused us a bit of stress and anxiety, I firmly believe that the outdoor lifestyle, their work ethic and their responsibilities to the animals and to people that they meet, will certainly benefit them and help them with their future careers and that cannot be taught in any classroom. Although it involves a daily drive to Orihuela and back, it is also an opportunity to explore the wonderful town. A trip to the new Tourist office was a lovely surprise. It is now housed in a beautiful building which was once an old granary. They have glassed over sections of the floor and you can see submerged pots that would have held grain or olive oil. This brief visit has certainly inspired me to delve a bit deeper and I picked up many leaflets of places of historical interest that is on offer. One of the leaflets is labeled “Orihuela, History of the Mediterranean” So get ready to go on a journey of discovery to find out a bit more about the historical town, that was once the capital of the region, and hopefully you will too be inspired to find out a bit more about the people and the town and area that you live in. Don’t forget the Dancea-thon is taking place this Sunday and if you are not feeling energetic enough to take part, why not pop down in the afternoon for a cream tea and listen to the beautiful voice of Marie Denise Evans who will be completing the days events – The house will also be open with lots of lovely crafts for sale. Tickets are also available for Bonfire Night which this year will be a Halloween Theme – so be prepared to be scared! .... Jenni

The Dark Nights and Safe Cycling
Cyclogical CYCLE ROUTE
The nights have already started to close in and it will only be a matter of days before the clocks go back and it gets considerably darker in the evenings. If you are planning to ride your bike at night or in the early mornings you must ensure that you have not only a front and rear reflector but also bright lights on the front and a good red light at the back of your bike. The darkness comes down very quickly and it is very easy to go out cycling and get caught out, or you may have stayed somewhere longer than expected and left to go home and it’s already dark. Many of us have to cycle regularly in the dark due to the hours / shifts that we work therefore we should also consider purchasing and wearing either a fluorescent harness, armbands or a waistcoat and always remember to carry a strong lock with you and wear your helmet as it’s the law here. So think health and safety and of other road users and be seen. Ride Outs: On Saturday 6th October Gary and Lynn took a group of 24 cyclists to “The Bonnie Mackintosh” restaurant in San Felipe where we had a great afternoon and also got to sample an excellent buffet courtesy of mine hosts Debbie and John. The group were a very mixed bunch of abilities and ages but everyone enjoyed it and managed to cover a total distance of 56kms. Next Ride: Our next ride out will be on Saturday 3rd November and will be across country lanes and canal tracks to Rafal. Anyone interested in coming along please contact Gary and Lynn at the shop. Lovely Larkspur Larkspur, once classified as Delphinium ajacis or D. ambiguum, is now listed under the scientific name of Consolida ambigua. Still, the relation to delphinium is obvious, even to the untrained eye. Many gardeners enjoy this perennial for indoor flower arrangements and bouquets. Cultivation Information Larkspur is an herbaceous perennial plant but is usually grown as an annual. Since self-sowing happens readily in the garden, most gardeners enjoy yearly blooms after planting once. Blooming April through September and has flowers in lavender, rose, pink, white or blue coloured flowers; foliage is deep cut or sometimes fine foliate. It is said to fade in hot, humid weather but will often perk up again in the cooler autumn months. Larkspur is a tall, upright plant that adds vertical accent to the garden, growing about 1-4’ tall and 12-18” wide depending on the cultivar. Larkspur does not require too much maintenance but some gardeners might prefer deadheading to prolong the bloom time. Seedlings can grow in unwanted places so gardeners will need to dig up stray volunteers. It can suffer root rot or
crown rot if the soil is too wet and overcrowding can cause powdery mildew problems. Growing well from seed, they should be sown after last frost directly onto prepared soil and barely covered at no more than 1/8” depth. Larkspur in the Garden Larkspur prefers well-drained soil so it matters less whether the soil is rich, poor, sandy, rocky or loamy, and more whether the soil holds water for too long. Larkspur will tolerate part shade but prefers full sun. Larkspur blends well with other flowering perennials like hardy geranium, phlox, roses, and lavender. Larkspur has an old-fashioned, cottage garden appeal as well so landscape designers can try combining with other popular cottage garden plants. Providing interest within the garden spring through to autumn, although the plants can fade in the heat of summer, use larkspur in ‘cottage-style’ gardens, or butterfly gardens. Larkspur also makes an excellent cutting flower so landscapers can use it in cut flower gardens. IMPORTANT NOTE - All parts of the larkspur; flowers, seed and leaves, are poisonous so use caution with young children and pets.

By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ ‘Strictly’s’ second week was a marathon 2 hour show with all 14 contestants competing and trying to stay out of the elimination zone and with the dance off reinstated this year, and with last weeks judges totals being carried forward to this week, they all had it to dance for. Opening the show were Nicky & Karen performing a Cha Cha Cha, unfortunately due to a very long intro and very little Cha Cha content, there was virtually no technique evident but Nicky showed good energy, confidence and attitude. His major problem for me was his permanent bent legs which made him look like he had lost his horse!! I awarded him a 3 the judges 18 and a cumulative total from the 2 weeks of 35 and 3 way joint at the bottom of the leader board. Next out were Colin & Kristina dancing a Viennese Waltz. Apart from his bottom sticking out due I think to the huge difference in height to his partner, Colin showed some really nice lines and really portrayed the character of the dance. Once he learns to push forward a bit more he will improve considerably. I awarded him a 6, the judges 24 and his total 47. Third to the floor were Dani & Vincent (team smurf as they are known) performing a Salsa. Dani had some very difficult choreography and lifts which I thought were a little too adventurous for her at this stage of the competition as she showed some ugly leg lines, but apart from a lack of hip action showed great energy, I awarded her 6, the judges gave her 27 and a running total of 48. Following were Fern & Artem performing a
Viennese Waltz, you can see that Fern is really enjoying her experience on ‘Strictly’. That said however, her core is not sufficiently lifted which results in a lack of movement across the floor and a somewhat ‘lumpy’ appearance. I gave her a 5, the judges a total of 24 and a cumulative total of 43. Next to take to the floor were Richard and Erin dancing a Cha Cha Cha. Last week he was told to ‘camp’ it up a bit and for me took it to extremes. He didn’t have sufficient floor pressure on his Cha Cha steps which resulted in a surface dance with no hip action. He did enjoy his 60’s steps and his shimmy’s but again insufficient dance steps for me. I gave him a 5, the judges 19 and a cumulative total of 41. Next out were Victoria and Brendan with a Slow Foxtrot. Unfortunately because of bad posture and lack of head spotting, she was staggering on solo turns and when in hold was dropping her neck back resulting in balance problems. It was much better than last weeks train crash but she still looks a bit like a rabbit in the headlights. I awarded her a 4, the judges a 26 (generous, but I think in an attempt to keep her off the bottom of the leader board) giving a total of 42. Following were Michael and Natalie dancing a Jive. I have to say this must be the worst performance I have ever seen in 10 series of ‘Strictly’. He was full of energy but with no technique, kicks were only half done and I don’t think he did more than a couple of steps in time with the music from start to finish! He reminded me of a wild man from Borneo. I gave him a 2 with a judges total 20

and cumulative 35 for me one of the bottom 2 this week. Next to take to the floor were Lewis & Flavia with a Viennese Waltz. He had a great top line albeit he needs to keep his head a little more to the left, great lines, nice hands but would benefit by driving through his feet more to gain better movement and acting lessons to help to get him more into character. I gave him an 8, judges total 30 and a running total of 57 (judges joint top spot this week). Next out were Denise and James with a Jive. High energy from the word go, with difficult choreography performed very well except for not quite finishing off her kicks and being a little flat footed at times. I gave her an 8, the judges 32 and a cumulative total of 57 and joint 1st place. Next out were Johnny and Iveta with a Slow Foxtrot. Much better than last week, but possibly because of his age he was stooped over Iveta, that said he performed with confidence and danced some quite nice recognisable Foxtrot steps. I awarded him a 5, the judges 20 with a running total of 37. Following were Sid & Ola with a Salsa. Sid seemed much more confident dancing solo in this dance when he showed great energy, execution and tricks. Once in basic with Ola however, he stiffened up and hips which are a key element for Salsa just didn’t happen. I gave him a 6 with the judges 22 and a total of 48. Next out were Kimberley and Pasha performing a Slow Foxtrot. They must have drawn the short straw for the music which
was awful, far too fast and because of the choreography not having sufficient Slows for me the whole thing was too frantic and lost character. I gave her a 5, the judges 26 and a cumulative total of 54. Penultimate were Jerry & Anton with another Slow Foxtrot. Jerry’s posture was awful, she looked like she had her chin on his shoulder and was hanging onto Anton for dear life. I would expect elegance from a former model but it was anything but! I gave her a 2, the judges 18 and a total of 35 and also on the bottom of the leader board my other selection for the bottom 2. Closing the show were Lisa & Robin with a Viennese Waltz. Showing great characterisation and elegance, Lisa surprised me yet again and is coming through as a good all rounder. I gave her a 7, the judges 25 and a total of 55. Into the bottom 2 were Johnny & Iveta and surprisingly Richard and Erin. With a unanimous judges vote, Johnny & Iveta were eliminated so Richard goes forward to next weeks show. So now all the couples have performed one dance from each section, you can see who is looking promising and I look forward to watching the development of this years celebrities with great interest. The celebrity who has surprised me the most up to now is Lisa Riley and showing promise are Denise, Lewis, Dani and Sid. Have you found a leader yet? It’s irritating enough being around someone you don’t like. Now, to make matters worse, scientists have discovered that bad company could also affect your brain! According to a report in the Daily Mail, whether you like someone or not can affect how your brain processes their actions, according to new research from the University of Southern California. Most of the time, watching someone else move causes a ‘mirroring’ effect — that is, the parts of our brains responsible for movement are activated by watching someone else in action. But being around someone you don’t like can send this process awry – you might think the person is moving more slowly than they actually are, for example. Past research has shown that race or physical similarity can influence brain processes, and we tend to have more empathy for people who look more like us. However this study took differences in race, age and gender into account – everyone who took part was a Jewish man. The researchers split the men into two groups – half were presented as neo-Nazis, with the aim of making them disliked, the others were presented as likable and open-minded. When the men viewed someone they disliked, the part of their brain that was otherwise activated in ‘mirroring’ — the right ventral premotor cortex — had a different pattern of activity for the disliked individuals compared to the likeable ones. But the difference was only spotted when the annoying person was actually present – there was no difference in brain activity when the men watched videos of the people they disliked. ‘Even something as basic as how we process visual stimuli of a movement is modulated by social factors, such as our interpersonal relationships and social group membership,’ said Mona Sobhani, lead author of the paper. ‘These findings lend important support for the notion that social factors influence our perceptual processing.’
The fastest pram in the world
A lazy new dad has built the world’s fastest motorised pram to save the effort of having to push it. Plumber Colin Furze added a powerful engine to his silver metal pushchair, giving it an incredible top speed of 50mph. But the 33-year-old, from Stamford, Lincolnshire, says it’s too powerful to go at top speeds with baby son Jake. He spent four weeks and £450 designing and making the pushchair, which has a 125cc motorbike engine hidden between the wheels. Mr Furze uses an accelerator and brake levers to control the speed, gears to go up hills, and the handle to steer. “It is rather scary to drive but I’ve had lots of envious looks from mums and dads, especially when they are pushing their babies up hills,” he said. “Hopefully one day I’ll be able to take Jake for a proper ride in it but I’m not sure if my girlfriend Charlotte would be very happy about that! It is really unstable when it goes at top speed and if you hit a rough bit in the road you are in danger of falling off, but so far I’ve managed not to crash.” He was determined to build the fastest pushchair in the world and applied to Guinness to set the record as there wasn’t one already in place. “I needed to go at least 30mph to do the record and I managed to do much better than that which is fantastic,” he added.

The 2012 Poppy Appeal Launch for District North of The Royal British Legion was held on Wednesday 10th October with over 80 guests, members and friends attending. The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums led the colourful procession of Standards carried by not only the local Legion Branches but also other Armed Forces associations in the area. Local residents lined the streets as the parade marched past and into the very attractive gardens of The Abbey Tavern. The Chairman of the District North Committee welcomed the District President and British Consul Paul Rodwell, together with Pedro Mancebo, local Deputy Mayor, other honoured guests and friends. Chris explained “ a verse from the famous poem For the Fallen, written by Laurence Binyon in 1914, is read before every Legion event and meeting in order to re-affirm the Legion’s commitment to remember the sacrifices made for us all by all those men and women who gave their lives in conflict” They shall grow not old As we that are left grow old Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Following the Exhortation Paul Rodwell spoke of his support and how impressed he is by charities like The RBL who dedicate their time to assisting those who may be suffering in some way. (Please see attached quote from Paul) Robin Hargrave, the District Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator then encouraged those present to help raise much needed funds to further the work of the charity. Over 134,000€ was raised last year in our District of Spain and every cent goes
to assisting present and former Armed Service personnel and their families in times of great need. Record for world’s most expensive cocktail broken £5,500 drink is mixed from ingredients more than 200 years old
Guests at a London bar were hoping it wasn’t their round after a £5,500 cocktail was mixed by a leading drinks expert. Salvatore Calabrese broke the record for the world’s most expensive cocktail with his ‘Salvatore’s Legacy’ drink which was made up of ingredients more than 200 years old. Salvatore, whose nickname is ‘The Maestro’, made the costly concoction using 1778 Clos de Griffier Vieux Cognac, 1770 Kummel Liqueur, Dubb Orange Curacao circa 1860 and two dashes of Angostura Bitters circa 1900s. The drink was valued at £5,500, smashing the previous record for the world’s most expensive cocktail that was held by The Skyview Bar of Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai, which cost £3,766.52 a glass. Salvatore said he was proud to make ‘liquid history’ after breaking the record with the cocktail he mixed in his self-titled bar, Salvatore’s at Playboy Club, in London last Thursday. He said: ‘It’s official, I am proud to say that history was made as well as consumed in my bar. ‘In front of a crowd, I needed very steady hands to open the vintage bottles and pour these precious ingredients into my own mixing glass, which I have had for 40 years.’ Salvatore has more than 30 years’ experience of creating drinks, developing his talent for combining flavours at an early age, whilst working in a bar in Maiori, a small village on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
Nestle to cut sugar and salt in breakfast cereals
Nestle SA and General Mills Inc will cut sugar and salt in the children’s breakfast cereals they jointly market outside North America, the latest attempt by major food companies to respond to health concerns, according to a report from news agency Reuters.
The two have been in a joint venture since 1990 to sell Nestle-brand cereals such as Cheerios in more than 140 countries outside the United States and Canada, markets which account for about half total global cereal sales of some $25 billion (15 billion pounds). They say they will reformulate 20 cereal brands popular with children and teenagers by 2015, boosting wholegrains and calcium and aiming for average reductions of 24 percent in sugar and 12 percent in sodium. The reformulation will affect about 5.3 billion portions of cereals sold each year. The 50/50 joint venture called Cereal Partners Worldwide (CPW) is the second-biggest breakfast cereal producer after Kellogg Co but is Europe’s leading manufacturer of children’s cereal. It had sales of 1.9 billion
Swiss francs ($2 billion) in 2011.
CPW Chief Executive Jeffrey Harmening said the plan builds on efforts started in 2003 to improve the nutritional profile of cereals. The group has cut almost 900 tonnes of salt and more than 9,000 tonnes of sugar from its recipes since then. “A certain number of moms don’t want their kids to have as much sugar as they do right now, so that is a barrier for some to purchasing breakfast cereal,” Harmening told Reuters at CPW’s new global innovation centre in the Swiss town of Orbe.
In his 20s, he moved to London, taking a position at Dukes Hotel in St James’s where he developed a niche market for special cognacs and was famed for his martini’s. He worked at other prestigious bars in London’s Mayfair before opening his own in Old Park Lane.
The move comes as food and beverage companies seek to pre-empt tougher regulation due to the global obesity epidemic by offering healthier products or smaller portions.
He has become an expert on cognacs after spending many years tracking down, collecting and serving some of the world’s oldest and rarest vintages. His personal collection is worth more than £1m and is displayed in his bar at Playboy Club London. Enthusiasts travel from around the world to sample his collection that stretches back to 1770. It was ingredients from this collection that he used to make the world’s most expensive cocktail.

Nellie, the truffle hunting hound of Suffolk: Family pet sniffs out valuable delicacy in owner’s back garden
When Nellie the English bull terrier kept digging up the back garden, her owners were not best pleased. But it turned out Nellie wasn’t just enjoying a little wanton destruction – she was busy discovering a gold mine. Janey Auchincloss, 48, and her husband John Perkins, 53, were astonished to find their dog had unearthed a stash of valuable black autumn truffles. The couple, who run a B&B in Lavenham, Suffolk, now sell the truffles at local markets or trade them with nearby businesses. They are worth £1 a gram, and the couple say Nellie has uncovered at least £1,000-worth each season for the past two years. Her discovery is all the more remarkable as experts claim it is extremely rare to find truffles in that part of the country. Miss Auchincloss, a mother of two who works as a garden designer, said: ‘We could not believe it when she turned up with a truffle in her mouth. ‘At first we were a bit annoyed that she kept digging up the garden. We could not work out why she was doing it. ‘But we soon realised she was using her powerful nose to seek out truffles – they are the last thing you would expect to find in a Suffolk garden. ‘I had not realised you even get them in England, I thought they are just usually found in France and Italy. At first we thought she would just get one or two, which is rare enough, but then she just kept finding them one after the other. ‘We have to be very careful – she absolutely loves them so we take a bone with us and use it to pry her away from them.’ Miss Auchincloss and Mr Perkins, a former detective chief inspector, bought Stone Farm B&B in 2006. Nellie discovered her first truffle in the autumn of 2007 and continued to find the odd one until last year, when she stumbled across a bumper crop. Her biggest truffle so far weighed 108 grams (4oz), and was the size of a fist. Mr Perkins said: ‘The truffles are amazing, we really are sitting on a gold mine of the stuff. We have been thinking about putting them on our menu, we might start grating them over the scrambled eggs.’ ‘It is funny, most dogs actually cost their owners money but Nellie certainly earns her keep. ‘We are not that bothered about money from the truffles but Nellie can at least afford to pay for her own dog food.’

But then, deep into injury time and with the referee looking at his watch, Victor worked his magic on the edge of the box, crossed into the middle of the penalty area, and Edu, after controlling the ball with his chest, headed the ball over the visiting keeper and into the net for the winner and claimed all three points for his side. Lucy, The Dog That Is Not Ours, has not abandoned her roots as a free spirited Spanish dog. She treats our house as a base, coming and going as she pleases, expecting the door to be opened promptly for her when she wishes to enter or exit. She is a creature of whim; some days she will arise mid-morning and spend the day asleep in various relaxed attitudes in and around the house and garden. Other days she will rise with the lark and disappear until the lark is snugly tucked up in bed and the owl is up and about his business. She has a circle of friends, and every morning almost without fail they will arrive outside the gate - a kind of canine version of ‘Can Lucy come out to play today?’ They make an ill-matched pack. There is Flopsy, a large and very handsome Alsation-alike, apart from her ears, which flop out sideways from her head like a pair of rainspouts. Mopsy is similar, except that one ears stands rigidly to attention, while the other ear makes no effort at all to achieve the upright. bona fide stray. Flopsy and Mopsy are handsome dogs, but Lemony Squidgett is so ugly that he is approaching beauty from the opposite end! He looks as if someone got the blueprint for a Chihuahua mixed up with the statistics for a fox terrier, then tried to cover their mistake with a furry coat that had once been white, but upon which someone had spilt egg in pale yellow patches. What he lacks in physical impressiveness he makes up for in charm. He has a permanently apologetic expression and demeanour. He is a waif with a manner that would make Oliver Twist seem brash. He sits, small and anxious, a tatty ragamuffin of a dog, between his large sleek companions, as out of place as a Shetland pony at Ascot. He is a self-effacing little chap. Should he accidentally get too close he will gaze up at me with his almost circular limpid brown eyes, ‘Please don’t hurt me, I’m only a little orphan,’ he will plead while scuttling out of harm’s way. That he is underweight and in need of a good bath all compounds the pathetic image – he is the master of acquiring the sympathy vote! I worry about poor little Lemony. The others have somewhere to go at night, but not Lemony. I wish he had a home to call his own.

There are many people who ridicule those amongst us who have chosen to become vegetarians. One of the regular jibes is that humans need the protein and nutrients that only meat can provide and therefore those that practice lettuce crunching cannot be as healthy as carnivores. But just take a look at the likes of Diane Keaton, Joanna Lumley; Jenny Seagrove, Amanda Holden and Leona Lewis – I cannot vouch for the halitosis, but I wouldn’t mind testing it and reporting back. And there is no lack of sporting prowess, when you include names like Carl Lewis, Martina Navratilova and Mike Tyson amongst a host of other sports men and women currently competing internationally. When it comes to brain power, then any doubts that veggies are
inferior are put to the sword when you consider that such soaring intellects as Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Darwin and Isaac Newton, were also advocates of the hamster diet. I have to confess that at this time, I am not a vegetarian. The spirit is willing but the flesh (if you’ll excuse that word) is pathetically weak, but I have flirted with the practice on two occasions in my life. Many years ago and taking my inspiration from a girl friend, I gave up meat and fish. It was ovo-lacto vegetarianism if you want to get technical about it – veg and fruit but still including eggs and dairy produce. I admired her will power and strength of character, because she had always enjoyed meat and fish leading up to her conversion, but had strong views on the exploitation of animals and a hatred of modern factory farming methods.Views that I shared. She also opted for a no leather policy, and although it cost a fortune, bought high quality non-leather shoes and boots. But it didn’t last for me, because one day I bundled my belongings into a large red spotted handkerchief, which I tied to the end of a long stick and set off to seek my fortune in Cornwall. seasonal restaurant in one of the tourist hot-spots. One of the perks of the job was that the low wages were supplemented by the provision of free meals and so it wasn’t long before I gave in to the interesting and mouth watering dishes that were available and I fell off the wagon with a resounding thud, quickly making up for all those meat-free months. I mean; given the choice of broccoli quiche or Steak Diane – which would you choose? The second occasion came many years later. My Motherin-Law had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and had been written off by her consultant who gave her a few short months to live. We were desperate to find some answers and came across a holistic cancer help centre in Bristol. The regime included a strict six month detoxifying vegan diet. Obviously no meat and fish or any dairy produce whatsoever, plus no food made with any animal by-products – in addition to which, no tea, coffee or alcohol. It was very harsh and in order to help make it more tolerable, my lovely wife and I decided to undertake the same diet, with all of us eating together and yours truly doing the preparing. There was much more than diet involved in her alternative treatment, but the upshot was,
that after four and a half years the cancer had disappeared, although ironically she eventually died after an asthmatic attack leading to heart failure. But they were four and a half quality years nonetheless. During my first experience as a celery bender, I made a brief and disastrous foray into bread making. The resulting loaf was somewhat akin to a white dwarf star – small, but incredibly dense and very heavy. There was no way that I could eat the darn stuff, so I threw it out for the birds. Having battled gamely to extract a few crumbs, the local sparrows and starlings quickly realized that this was not bread as they knew it, and I still cringe recalling how the poor things struggled to take off. I can still see their tiny stick legs galloping across the patio in an effort to achieve enough momentum to get airborne. One unfortunate wood pigeon fell over and rolled around for a bit, before waddling off in a huff. It’s not the will power that I lack these days, but the extra chunk of time that it takes to prepare an imaginative variety of classy meat free meals. Plain vegetables and salads everyday would soon have me climbing the walls. Still . . . I am almost tempted to give it another go...

They not only manufacture an extremely popular and iconic board game but also print the Alquerian currency. Unfortunately they are also paid with the Alquerian currency. Alquerian exports prior to the sealing of the border consisted of an inferior olive oil and Remitroot. In their rush to alienate Alqueria the Remitroot issue was totally forgotten. Politicians in Madrid celebrated the solution to the Alquerian problem but seemed surprised that their Remitroot supply dried up. A common fault of politicians from all nations, the inability to join the dots and foresee the consequences of their actions. The price of Remitroot Liquor spiralled, changing hands for 500 Euros a bottle in the backstreets of Granada. Antonio Poyato smuggled out the liquor on a raft camouflaged as the Almería and District Synchronised Swimming Team. He paddled down the Río Verde passed the blockade and handed over his contraband to a team of motorcycle riders. These fearless knights of the road sitting astride their high-powered machines can outrun anything the Guardia Civil have in their stables. The exploits of these individuals have become legend as they race through the Andalucían night carrying their precious load. A clandestine distribution network then takes over, delivering in shadows to those with the necessary funds. Poyato soon became the wealthiest Alquerian and Remitroot the most sought after liquid commodity in western Europe. Imports into Alqueria began to be paid for in Remitroot Liquor as the currency became more and more worthless. Remitroot became the de facto currency of Alqueria. At the bimonthly meeting of the IMF, the world bankers, most of whom have a liking for distilled Remitroot juice agreed to the refloating of the Raro. Rodriquez’s run-down olive mill was on borrowed time and with nothing else of intrinsic value in the village there was only one solution. Remitroot Liquor offered the only viable standard for the ailing Alquerian economy. The Raro, the only currency backed by an alcoholic aphrodisiac which when pulped can be used to lag water pipes.

pause for thought
What a reminder we’ve had recently of the immense power of the forces of nature! The rain-gauge at our house showed we had 250mms rain (slightly less than in the whole of 2011) in just 6 hours, and where most people doubtless had the good sense to stay inside during that storm, I had two funerals to attend, so felt obliged to venture out. Our own track was certainly bad enough, but nothing to the devastation being wreaked below. Every route I tried seemed blocked, and at one stage I saw the road ahead move and managed to stop my car just seconds before the bridge I was approaching collapsed into the raging torrent below. Many, I’m sure have similar stories; there were doubtless many narrow escapes, many disasters and many tragedies that day. The Authorities have been amazing in the ensuing days, clearing up, repairing and cutting temporary tracks in an effort to get life back to normal, but for many, I’m sure, normality may never return – the loss of both property and life proving too great for that. So where, many may ask, was God in all this? Doesn’t He send the weather? And couldn’t He have prevented the tragedies that occurred? I confess I don’t have any simple answers to such questions. I’ve no idea how much impact human activity has on the physical laws of nature. And, recalling the fury of the waters that destroyed the bridge I was approaching, I’m actually amazed that the consequent damage and loss of life wasn’t greater. Yet I’m sure the God I know and love is far from being unmoved by the level of suffering caused. So as for the question of “where He was”; I’d say that God was there, right in the thick of it, listening to the many prayers that were doubtless being said in moments of panic (and yes I had a few of those), standing alongside and sharing the pai, guiding, calming, helping and strengthening more than any of us will ever know. PALMS GROW FROM THE ASH The huge storm last month tragically affected some areas yet other places escaped unscathed. In Lubrin for example friends talked about getting 12 ins of rain and being unable to get out of their home for days as an 8 foot deep fissure had been gouged by the flood waters into the lane they use yet in nearby Albanchez it is business as usual. The mountainous terrain we have means storms are localised as rain clouds follow the contours of the land rather than being pushed along by the wind. Unfortunately then gravity takes over and rushes the water towards the coast. The road from the E15/A7 Ballabona junction recently opened again to Zurgena, with a wacky Wild West detour towards the end to get into the village via the cemetery. I was gob smacked to see what damage had been done by the storm waters which were easily 20 feet deep, two large bridges demolished and large sections of road washed away even though there were huge tunnels underneath to normally cope with flash floods. Driving up the motorway to Lorca its like war zone and no wonder the motorway was closed and diversions are in place. Near to Rambla Aljibe a 3 acre lake has appeared by the side of what remains of the road as all along it flood waters have torn away the tarmac. Near to the Sol Times offices on the A334 where I know it as the ‘funny traffic lights road’ the once brush filled rambla is now 100m wide and looks ready to be easily converted into an airport runway. No wonder the Sol Times staff had problems getting home that day as one road bridge has collapsed. Zurgena Council were
magnificent in creating a diversion that lasted a few days until the darlings or @*%$£”*^ at the Junta de Andalucía closed it again on Friday so cutting off tens of thousands of people again. If it was allowed to use expletives I surely would. Back in the UK the folly of building on flood plains has caused Joe and Jane Public no end of misery with the constant wet weather; plus the crazy practice of front gardens being concreted over to provide parking spaces means rain that would have previously soaked into the soil now runs unchecked into over loaded storm drains. Back here in Spain, that the Vera Administration allowed so much building at the mouth of the Rio Antas is criminal. Of course the bamboo should have been regularly cleared to allow any storm waters to flow but some of the huge amount of water would still have overflowed anyway into the low lying urbanisations. After the fire damaged the Bedar countryside, Mother Nature is busy performing her wondrous miracles. Through the blackened and scorched earth new green shoots of life are bursting through everywhere. I saw asparagus, palms and grasses repopulating the mountain side and some are already 2 foot tall; yet they all grow in a spooky and eerie silence as the birds and bees have either fled or sadly perished. As well as all the admirable volunteers helping to clean up; the Red Cross centre in Vera is accepting donations of clothing, non-perishable food items and household goods to help residents of the worst affected areas around Pueblo Laguna. Please have a look through cupboards and wardrobes and see what can be donated.

Blanca Best Back 9 J Chatham 18 at Altorreal 11th October THE ABANDONED SAMM RACE There was a good turnout for the fourth day of the SAMM Autumn Race Series was held on Sunday 14th October. It took place from the CAR Sailing Centre at Los Narejos on the Mar Menor. It was a calm morning with a very light southerly wind. There was a Jet-ski race taking place to the south of the Mar Menor towards Los Urritias. The race was planned to sail around Isla de Perdiguera and back. It was a slow start in the light winds for the twelve boats. There were four Shoestring boats (Uno, Tres, Cuatro and the Mirror), the three Balaton boats (Conny, Sirocco and Mistral), Deltania Dos, the Martin, the Solo, Weta 15 and the
Catamaran Hamoor. Inspite of capsizing Shoestring Tres, helmed by Peter Cadwell and crewed by Doreen Squires, was righted and continued to the finish. The Officer of the Day had to shorten the SAMM course when he realised the Jet-ski race was set to pass through the middle. Not all the boats helms men understood the new course and on the return leg they took different routes. In the event because of the confusion the decision was taken to abandon the race, which was a very sad end to an interesting day. The next race day will be on Sunday 4thNovember. PRESENTATION EVENING 6TH OCTOBER 2012 This year’s presentation evening was held at the Club House so that the members of the staff who are society members would be able to attend. All the monthly winners were presented with their trophies together with the singles and doubles competition winners, and
most importantly the player of the year. The members and their guests enjoyed a superb evening with a Hog Roast meal and music supplied by John Summers. Unfortunately several of the winners have now returned to the UK and we wish them well in their golf. Many thanks to Chris and his staff for their hospitality.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY AT ALTORREAL......................................... Altorreal Golf Club hosted our annual 666 competition. This popular format is a game for teams of 4 where the best single score is recorded for the first 6 holes. Then the best 2 scores for the second 6 followed by the best 3 scores for the final 6 holes. In spite of the recent heavy rain the course was in good condition and the staff were welcoming and helpful. We shall definitely be returning to this course. As usual there were a view items to report with Mick Budd again providing light relief on the first tee. Having sliced his first drive just ten yards to the right at the first tee at El Plantio a few weeks ago he has worked hard to adjust his swing. GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB WEEKLY REPORT............................... BY STEVE HIBBERD winter league started with Congratulation to our Federation Cup rinks team of Florence & Mike Edwards, Cas Thomas and Graham Bater, who having beaten Javier in the quarter final, then Quesada (semi), went on to lift the trophy with a fine win over Country Bowls in the final, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. The teams of Wendy/Barry Latham, Gail Watson and Fred Willshire plus Jan/Brian Pocock, Sheila Stead and Mel Brown, also qualified from their respective groups, but were knocked out at the quarter final stage, On Saturday 6 October, we welcomed a touring side from deepest Zummerset, the quaintly named Isle of Wedmore BC, near Cheddar Gorge. Having taken a slightly scenic route, before eventually arriving at Greenlands (bringing new meaning to the phrase ‘touring side’!), they quickly devoured their scrummy buffet, before settling down to a thoroughly enjoyable game of bowls, with the hosts winning on all 7 rinks. As with last season, the

A resounding victory by the team of Tom Hill, Bobbie Sims, Steve Cantley and Bill Pain (19-11) got us off to a good start, followed by a dramatic last wood victory by the ‘seasoned’ rink of Gail Watson, Wendy Latham, Fred Willshire and Barry Latham (14-13). Defeats for the other 2 rinks (Di Lawton, Mike Veale, Barry Collins and Dave Greenland, plus Ronnie Cairns, Ian Kenyon, Lynn Greenland and Derek Toozer), resulted in a narrow 4 (57) to 6 (60) points loss, which on a positive note, is an improvement on last season’s corresponding match. It was a similar story for our Berleen teams of Sue Johnson, Tony Hodges, Bill Sims & Colin Lloyd, plus Jeannie Clements, Avril Toozer, Steve Hibberd & Sandra Heath, who having led for long periods, succumbed on the final end to lose on both rinks, and the game, by only 3 shots overall.

The venue for the match was Nancy´s (not the club ), as all other venue´s still seemed to be getting over the rain of late. As this was a red day the venue was packed with no swims available after 8.30am. Although still carrying some colour, it fished quite well, as can be seen from the results. SAN MIGUEL G.S. at LAS RAMBLAS............................... It was quite evident that we shots on a par 5 which had the visitors’ section went to are well into October as over 30 San Miguel G.S. members and guests descended on Las Ramblas. Our arrival for the first tee time at noon was met with a pretty busy car park, plenty of activity on the practice area and a bustling clubhouse. This busiest time of the year for local courses always means a round is going to take somewhat longer, but when the semi-rough is of a length and texture that it virtually “devours” any ball that is unfortunate enough to even roll off the fairway by a few inches, it can make things very tricky…. and a good deal more timeconsuming. As our four-ball stood contemplating our 2nd
the characteristic treelined fairway along with a generous sprinkling of trees in the middle of the fairway, my guest thoughtfully studied his new toy…..a super-duper laser caddy! He definitely earned fauxpas of the day as he gazed down the fairway and proudly announced, “It’s 165 metres to that tree!” This naturally produced a very reasonable response….”Would that be the green one with the brown trunk?” It was what will become for me a truly unforgettable “Las Ramblas moment.” On target to collect their sleeves of balls for NTP’s were Ian Parkinson, Phil Birtwistle, Colin Rust and Chris Hamblett. First prize in
Mike Stone (30) with Brian Whitby coming in 2nd just one point behind. Ian Parkinson claimed top honours in the silver division with 32 points followed in by two of the ladies, Jackie Marshall with 29 points and Marg Birtwistle with 28 which was awarded after a count-back. Topping the gold category with highest score of the day was Phil Birtwistle with 35 points, 2nd was Brian Staines (32) with Glen Rapley’s 31 earning him 3rd place. CORNISH PRIDE (LOS DOLSES)...................................... Ten Pin Bowling League their first win of the season, series scratch scores. Matches played on October 9th It was a very busy night at the bowl, and with difficult lane conditions, leading to lower than our usual league average scores, we had a few surprise results this evening. A below par Team Finland lost their first match of the season when they were beaten 6-2 by Los Bandidos, Barry Tolson bowling for L.B. was top scorer on the lanes with a 578 hcp series. Crazy Pinz recorded their first win of the season, when they beat Mixers 6-2, that win lifted them off the bottom of the table. Top bowler for C.P. was Gunter Wilms, 581 hcp series. Los Lobos are still looking for
as they lost this week to Bar Mosquitos, Terry Buswell bowling for B.M. helped his team to their 8-0 win with his 545 hcp series. Despite the Diego Munoz the captain of Splash bowling his best series of the season so far, a 587 hcp series, his team still suffered a 6-2 defeat to Split Happens. That win means S.H. with only 4 weeks of the season gone, are now the only unbeaten team in the league. Bandoleros made it 3 draws out of 4 matches when they shared the points with Lucky Strike, Jackie Priest, bowling for L.S. was the top female bowler on the night with her 181 game, and 511
Caballo Negro also recorded their first win of the season, as they convincingly beat Cornish Pride 8-0. Juoni Lappalainen bowling for C.N. made their win look easier by bowling the highest male hcp scores of the night, a 249 game and a 637 series. With only 2 bowlers on the night it was always going to be difficult for Hall y Day to maintain their winning streak, against an improving Carp-r-us side. The Carps eventually won 6-2. Top bowler for H y D was Steve Simmons with a 585 hcp series, and for Carps, it was Bill Hogg with a 551 hcp series.
Mazarron again failed to win a game which they completely dominated but, on this occasion, they could not blame the pitch or the match officials. They simply failed to convert enough of the many chances they created, including a missed penalty. Alquerias took the lead after 14 minutes when one of their forwards fell over the outstretched arm of Mazarron goalkeeper, Jose Iker, and the resultant penalty was easily despatched. Alquerias had only one other shot in the first off and this was way off target. Mazarron, however, although restricted mainly to shots from outside the area, tested the home keeper on numerous occasions, notably with a 25 yard effort from Cris and a glancing header by Ruben from an Alfonso free kick. The best chance fell to Edu after 35 minutes when he pounced onto a rebound and broke clear but he shot straight at the goalkeeper to leave Mazarron trailing by the only goal at half time. Panocha and Fran replaced Edu and Diego (2) at half time and within 5 minutes Panocha equalised for Mazarron when he headed in Serrano’s superb cross at the far post. After 58 minutes Serrano headed wide from just 6 yards with only the keeper to beat and Mazarron continued to create all the chances. After 66 minutes a through
ball from Cris found Jose Ruben on the right and his brilliant chip to the far post beat the goalkeeper and appeared to be going into the net before being scrambled clear by an Alquerias defender. Next a left foot shot on the turn by Santi went just wide before Panocha was brought down in the penalty area and Mazarron were awarded a penalty. Inexplicably Mazarron chose to make a substitution before the penalty lick was taken with Miguellon replacing Serrano and the resultant delay of several minutes must have affected Santi who missed badly from the 73rd minute spot kick. Alquerias came more into the game in the last 15 minutes with their tricky right winger causing a few

problems. There were a number of bookings and Mazarron’s Urrea was sent off along with an Alquerias player in the last few minutes. Although Mazarron gained their first point of the season it was really a case of another two points dropped and they really need to become more clinical in front of goal.
