Financial assistance for earthquake victims

A spokesperson for the Ayuntamiento of Lorca, María del Carmen Ruiz, reported that the city council will advance up to 1,500 Euros for the rental of a dwelling to Lorca residents whose homes suffered damage so severe as to make them uninhabitable, and who have no economic means to meet rental costs such as deposit, down payments and monthly fee.

She argued that ‘there are people without economic resources who can not rent a house until they are awarded the aid provided by the decree. In these cases the City Council will anticipate the arrival of aid, providing an immediate solution for cases requiring immediate action. We have cases in which families, in addition to losing their residence, find that now they have no financial means to afford to pay monthly rental fee and deposit.’ This situation was raised at the last meeting of the Bureau for Development, when the proposal by the Mayor was unanimously approved for the establishment of repayable advances to address those cases which can not wait for assistance from the Government. Those who fall into these categories of need can obtain information and an appointment by contacting the City Cultural Centre. The Centre will be open Monday to Friday 8 to 14 hours, and appointments can be made through www.lorca.es, telephone 900 117 816. There will be aid of €1,500 for those citizens who have lost their homes and have not had the opportunity to recover their belongings, whereas others in similar situations will be entitled to 800€ - both these awards will be over and above those already provided by the Government.

World’s first double leg transplant carried out in Valencia THE world’s first-ever double leg transplant

has been carried out successfully in Valencia’s La Fe hospital at the hands of ace surgeon Pedro Cavadas, who has already transplanted hands, arms, feet and even faces. Cavadas said the operation was ‘highly complex’ as there was no previous experience or history in the world of such surgery being carried out to draw upon. Details of the patient and the donor have not yet been revealed, although they may be able to be brought to light later this week. Back in May 2010, the ministry of health gave La Fe hospital permission to carry out lower-limb transplants for a period of up to four years. Cavadas is responsible for carrying out the world’s firstever face transplant, on a 43-year-old man who had become disfigured as a result of a massive tumour, back in August 2009. This involved substituting the entire jaw and the tongue as well as the superficial parts of the face, but the patient was able to be discharged from hospital after just one month. He also carried out the first hand and lower arm transplant in the world in November 2006 on Colombian patient Alba Lucía. Two years later, he reimplanted a lower leg on a 20-year-old man whose limb had become severed during an accident at work. Whilst the stump was healing sufficiently to stitch the leg back on, Cavadas kept the severed limb ‘alive’ by temporarily attaching it to the other leg, firstly to the groin and then to the ankle. The patient is now believed to be walking and has full feeling in his previously-severed leg.

Electricity boards ‘must provide free helpline’ and ‘better service’

ELECTRICITY boards will be obliged by law to offer free-phone helplines to their customers, according to newly-drafted legislation.

At present, anyone who has a problem with their supply or bill gets charged for making the necessary calls to resolve issues created by the companies themselves – meaning that, effectively, the electricity boards make money from their own inefficiencies. Once the law comes into force, electricity boards will have three months to set up a free customer service line and to ensure that they itemise all costs stated on customers’ bills. If they fail to do so, they could be fined up to 10 per cent of their net profits. The new Customer Service Law will also give a maximum period of one month for any complaints from clients to be resolved. Electoral candidate for the central government, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, says the idea of the new legislation – which will be further debated in Parliament in September – is to mop up the deficiencies in the service provided by large companies and to protect the consumer. There has not yet been any mention of similar measures being extended to other companies, such as telephone and internet providers, which charge customers who ring up every time their connection is down – meaning that the firms earn money from providing an unreliable service.

A fifth of Spain’s young jobseekers ‘lack basic qualifications’, says government

Nearly a million of Spain’s unemployed youngsters are ‘not in conditions’ to find a job – or even to start vocational or professional training, says Secretary of State for Employment, Mari Luz Rodríguez. She explained that around 20 per cent of the country’s jobseekers are victims of the economic boom which saw the construction industry crying out for workers between 1997 and 2006 and, now that the sector is barely trading, have no real possibilities of finding work. Rodríguez says these people left school at 16 and worked

their way up ‘on the job’ in the building trade and related industries, enjoying the fruits of the mass development that saw much of Spain’s coastline become buried in concrete. None of them went on to study for their Bachillerato – Spain’s answer to A-levels – and some did not even finish their ESO, or GCSEs. As a result, these young people – now aged between 21 and 30 - would not be accepted on any professional training courses, because they do not have the basic academic qualifications necessary to do so.

ALMERIA..........

Every Thursday the Banda Municipal de Música of Almeria has drawn together a loyal audience to their open air concerts in the Anfiteatro de la Rambla. Last week’s concert began with ‘O Fortuna’ from Carmina Burana by C. Orff, continued with the March from Verdi’s opera Aida. The evening continued with Brahms’s Hungarian Dance No. 5 Brahms and Tchaikovsky’s Caprice Italian and Hungarian Dance No. 6. The evening closed with Franz van Suppé’s Poet and Peasant. The concert on the 14th of July at the Amphitheatre will be very special because the repertoire has been chosen by the public, and includes film music, popular classics, and features La Banda con los Niños.

Carboneras.....

Twelve students of the Employment Workshop, which is managed by the Ayuntamiento de Carboneras and financed by the Ministerio de Trabajo y la Consejería de Empleo have prepared two hiking trails which will be offered free of charge to promote sustainable tourism in the municipality of Almeria. This workshop project aims to help the students to learn skills with a practical application which will help them to enter the labour market as tourism agents for local development. The new routes will be used as night routes, the first will be used on 15 July, starting at the Ayuntamiento and going to the Torre del Rayo, on a route that overlooks the beaches and cliffs of the area. The route will take around 3 hours. The next will be on August 12, and will run through the Majada de las Vacas and inland through Cabo de Gata-Nijar Parque Natural. Besides drawing up the routes, the students of the employment workshop will serve as instructors and guides, offering participants information on the attractions of each of the paths and the local flora and fauna. To participate in these free activities, make reservations in advance either at the Carboneras Tourist Office or by phone 950 13 61 62.

San Fermin festival kicks off with “clean and fast” first run

Pamplona’s traditional San Fermin festival kicked off on 8th july with a “clean and fast” first “encierro” or bull run through the historic old town.

No-one was gored on the first morning, but four people were taken to Navarre Hospital with injuries -one with fractured ribs - suffered during a sprint where the six guiding steers stole the show from the charging bulls from the Torrestrella ranch, which is famed for producing dangerous bulls. One man who was gored and almost killed last year by a half-tonne bull is back for more this week. Chilean-born waiter Alonso Ceardi, 24, remains addicted to the thrill of running with bulls and Thursday’s running of the bulls was his 10th appearance. Runners, wearing traditional white clothing and red handkerchiefs around their necks, tripped over each other or fell in the mad rush but avoided getting caught out as daredevils and animals charged down the 849-metre course from a pen to the city’s bull ring in two minutes, 30 seconds. People come from all over the world to test their bravery and enjoy the festival’s nonstop street parties which last until July 14. The festival was immortalized by author Ernest Hemingway in his 1926 novel ‘The Sun Also Rises’.

Cut top management’s salary and give more to minions, says work ministry SPAIN’S minister of work says massive cuts should be made in the ‘obscene’ salaries earned by company directors, and a fairer distribution of wealth among ordinary employees.

Valeriano Gómez stresses that this is not a new idea, but is even more crucial now with mass redundancies among the workforce whilst the top managers earn too much money. Gómez pointed out that many company directors earn up to 1,500 times as much as their lowest-paid members of staff. He says it is difficult for the government to place an upper limit on wages and oblige bosses of big privatesector firms to hand over some of their salaries to employees who struggle to pay the bills. But Gómez believes that such measures can and should be taken in banks that have been bailed out by public funds, since this move is currently being enforced in other

parts of the EU and in the USA. He says the excesses, risk-taking, selfcentredness of, and lack of supervision over bank bosses is largely what has led to sole traders, small businesses and employees from suffering ruin in the recession. Better pay would ensure workers became more involved in their firms’ activities, meaning new talents could be exploited. “In the future, the more stable of the world’s economies will push for fiscal measures and regulations to ensure a fairer distribution of wealth between workers,” states Gómez. “For a country to progress, this situation of enormous difference in wages between staff members and top management must not continue.”

Valuable manuscript disappears Santiago de Compostela cathedral

Police have launched a widespread search after a hugely valuable illuminated manuscript disappeared from the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northern Spain. This edition of the Codex Calixtinus is thought to date from around 1150 and is considered the very first guidebook for mediaeval pilgrims following the “Camino de Santiago”. Its value is considered incalculable and

as such the manuscript would be unsaleable on the open market. Its purpose was largely practical - to collect advice of use to pilgrims heading to the shrine there. It also included sermons and homilies to St James. On Wednesday afternoon, the book was reported missing. Only the dean of the cathedral and two other people had

access to the room in which it was kept, and the doors show now signs of a forced entry. “We are investigating its disappearance,” a police spokeswoman said. “It is usually kept in a room to which only a handful of people have access,” she said. The Codex is only brought out on special occasions, such as last year’s visit of Pope Benedict, when it is closely guarded.

PP demands Rubalcaba’s immediate resignation for “abusing power”

The PP spokesperson, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, today demanded the immediate resignation of the government’s first vicepresidente, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, after accusing him of being “arbitrary, glaringly incompatible and abusing power” in his position within the socialist government. The opposition PP is accusing Rubalcaba of using his position to further his own “personal and partisan interests” and cites

in particular the fact the the PSOE’s number one candidate for the next general elections has already used his position in the Interior Ministry to draw up a number of contracts with the election organisers. The PP claims in a press conference this morning that what Rubalcaba, as a candidate, is doing “is not ethical and is already damaging to the public’s general interest”.

Five year old used in cashpoint card scam

A 22-year-old woman identified only as Teodora P. has been arrested for stealing over 22,000 euros by using a five year old to distract elderly people using a cash point in Madrid’s Paseo de la Florida in order to steal their cards. The woman’s modus operandi was to choose

mostly elderly victims and hang around near the cash point in order to see them type in their PINs. The fiveyear-old boy had been coached to distract the customers by tapping their legs just after they had entered their PIN, at which point the young woman swapped their valid bank

card for a false one.

The police investigation began back in May after a number of bank customers reported fraudulent use of their debit and credit cards. All those affected had had their real bank card substituted for an almost identical, forged one.

Santander UK to switch Indian call centres back to Britain

Spanish-owned Santander UK announced on Friday that it will return its call centres in India back to Britain, creating 500 jobs, and cited a high number of complaints from customers. “Santander UK is returning all of its Indian call centres to the UK so that all retail banking customers ringing the bank will have their call answered by a UK-based employee,” the lender said in a statement. “The move is part of Santander’s programme to further improve the service it offers and follows feedback from customers who say dealing with an offshore call centre is a frustration that can lead to dissatisfaction.” Back in 2003, Abbey, as the group was then known, outsourced its call centre operations to centres in Bangalore, southern India, and Pune in the west. “Improving the service we offer is my top priority,” said Santander UK chief executive Ana Botin in the statement. “Our customers tell us they prefer our call centres to be in the UK and not offshore. We

have listened to the feedback and have acted by re-establishing our call centres back here.” All calls that were handled in India will now being dealt with by staff based in Glasgow, Leicester and Liverpool. Santander added that is has hired 500 extra staff to handle the estimated 1.5 million calls per month. The group’s British call centres currently employ a total of 2,500 staff. Last week, meanwhile, telecommunications company New Call Telecom said it will move one of its offshore call centres from India to Burnley, Lancashire, because of increased costs. Spain’s Santander entered the British retail banking market with the 2004 purchase of lender Abbey National, which was subsequently changed to Abbey. The division was rebranded as Santander UK last year.

Britain arrests suspect over Spanish king ‘murder bid’

Armed officers arrested a suspected Basque separatist in Britain on Thursday in connection with an attempt to assassinate Spain’s King Juan Carlos in Bilbao’s Guggenheim museum in 1997, police said. Eneko Gogeaskoetxea Arronategui, 44, was detained by armed police on a European arrest warrant in the university city of Cambridge, eastern England. He appeared at City of Westminster Magistrates Court in central London, where he was refused extradition and was duly placed into custody. The court heard he had been living for some years in Britain under an assumed name. The judge was told that Arronategui is wanted for eight offences: membership of ETA; the attempted assassination of the king of Spain; possession of ammunition; the murder of a police officer; three counts of theft of vehicles; and forgery of public documents, namely the transferring of licence plates. Armed Basque separatist organisation ETA is considered a terrorist group by the European Union and the United States. The offences were alleged to have taken place on October 18, 1997. James Stansfeld, representing the Spanish authorities, told the court: “The requested person was stopped whilst in the Guggenheim gardens filling garden window boxes with ammunition for grenade launchers. They were stopped by the police. To affect his escape the police officer who stopped them was shot and killed.” The court heard as he fled the scene, Arronategui hijacked three different cars: “Those facts clearly show that this gentleman will do anything to evade capture,” Stansfeld said. Defence lawyer Katrina Orme said her client would fight extradition on potential issues of political motivation and a fair trial. Arronategui will next appear in court on July 25, via

videolink. District Judge John Zani said there were “substantial grounds” for believing he would not voluntarily return to custody. Searches were under way at a residential address and two business addresses in Cambridge. In Madrid, Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said despite the arrest there was no evidence of an ETA network in Britain. “I think they just go to Britain because it is the closest country to them and at the same time it is separated by water, which psychologically makes it feel further away,” he said. The interior minister said Spain had been following the operation for months since someone gave a tip-off to Arronategui’s possible presence in Cambridge. Arronategui was believed to have held a high position in ETA in 2006 and 2007 but investigators were still looking into his exact role, the minister said. The arrest, which came a day after ETA suspect Daniel Derguy was apprehended on terrorism charges in Cahors, southwest France, showed that members of the armed separatist group could not hide, Rubalcaba said. “It shows two things. First, the excellent international cooperation we have with France and Britain. And second, the difficulty ETA has: wherever they go, there will always be a policeman, whatever the nationality.” ETA has been linked with a string of assassination plots on Juan Carlos, who became king in 1975. ETA is held responsible for nearly 830 deaths in a near-42-year campaign for independence for the Basque Country of northern Spain and southwestern France. In January, ETA announced a permanent, verifiable ceasefire. It was rejected by Spain’s government for falling short of its demands for a surrender of arms and dissolution of the group.

Clue to pain of sunburn discovered by UK researchers A chemical in the body that triggers pain from sunburn has been pinpointed by UK experts in a discovery that could lead to new painkillers.

Scientists hope one day to be able to knock out the substance with drugs, helping people who suffer from chronic pain. Tests on volunteers showed CXCL5, as it is called, is produced when skin is burnt by UV rays from the sun. Exposure to ultraviolet light from sunlight causes premature skin ageing, cancer a n d

shown for the first time the important role of this particular molecule in controlling pain from exposure to UVB irradiation. “But this study isn’t just about sunburn we hope that we have identified a potential target which can be utilised to understand more about pain in other inflammatory conditions like arthritis and cystitis. “I’m excited

In the study, scientists at King’s College London exposed small patches of the 10 volunteers’ skin to UVB. Areas of sunburn were produced which became increasingly tender over a few days. The scientists took small samples of sunburnt skin and screened them for hundreds of known pain molecules. They discovered unusually high levels of CXCL5. Supportive text messages can double the chance of someone successfully quitting smoking, according to UK researchers. Just over 10% of 2,900 smokers who received encouraging texts such as “you can do it” had quit after six months, but only 4.9% of a similar number who did not have the same support gave up. The study, published in The Lancet, called for texts to be

included in services to help people kick the habit. Other scientists said a text service could be offered globally. According to government statistics two-thirds of UK smokers say they want to stop. This study looked at 5,800 of them. Supportive texts were sent to 2,915 of the smokers for six months. The rest received only messages thanking them

Text messages ‘help smokers quit’ for taking part. They were sent five texts a day for the first five weeks and then three a week for the next 26 weeks. Participants could also text back for specific advice when they had cravings or had lapsed back into smoking. Saliva tests for cotinine, which is made when nicotine is broken down by the body, were taken to determine if people had really given up. After six months, 10.7% of those receiving texts had quit double the proportion among those doing it on their own. Dr Caroline Free, who led the txt2stop trial at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “Text messages are a very convenient way for smokers to receive support to quit. “People described txt2stop as being like having a friend encouraging them or an angel

Dr Derrick Bennett and Dr Jonathan Emberson, both from the University of Oxford, said text messages could be used to help people around the world. “The lessons learned from the txt2stop trial could... not only provide a new approach to cessation in high-income and middle-income countries, but could also provide a useful starting point for implementing behavioural change in resource-poor settings.” It has also been suggested similar text messages could be used to help people modify other behaviour.

Straightwww.pedipez.com from the- Tel:fishes mouth... 686 153 505 Garra rufa spa treatments are coming to a resort near you , mark my word. The fish treatment is blasting its way through country to country as we speak as more and more people are taking off their shoes and enjoying the experience. The therapy has been around for many years in Far East Asia and to the rest of the world it’s a new beginning. The treatment involves placing your feet into a tank of water and then letting the garra rufa fish nibble away at the dead skin leaving the feet feeling smooth and rejuvenated. So does it hurt? , well no it’s more like a tickle on the toes than anything else and more importantly these small tiddlers don’t have any teeth so forget about all those man killing piranha films you watched as a child. There are scientific benefits to the gara rufa spa too. During the dead skin removal the fish produce an enzyme called diathanol which aids skin regeneration. There are many other benefits too which include improving stress levels, promoting blood

circulation and the relief of eczema, dermatitus and psoriasis. The treatment itself has a name which is “ichthyotherapy” which means the use of fish to treat illness. These Spa´s can be a great new feature for Beauty Salon´s, Nail Bar´s, Hair Dressers, Hotels or even if you have space in your business premises or home . In fact trade is booming in this field right now and if you haven’t considered this then now is the time to have a close look at it. There are some downsides however, the fish foot spa does require some maintenance in order to keep the fish and the spa unit in very good condition, not just for the health of the fish but also for the health of your customers too. So changing the water on a daily basis is a natural requirement and also testing for levels of ammonia and nitrate. Pedipez spa´s are backed by a professional team who can help with setting up your spa and supporting the day to day running with telephone support or via a maintenance contract. The fish themselves are pretty resilient little fellows but they still need to be fed about twice a day. So there are some important thinking points before

anyone decides to open up a gara rufa spa . However the market is still relatively new in Spain and given the right location it has a great chance of succeeding. There is a novelty factor which exists right at this moment which will get people walking into your salon on this alone , the treatment they receive will then determine if they decide to come back. Our expert combination of manufacturing, supplying and installing Garra Rufa fish spa´s guarantees you a trouble free, easy and successfull way to provide a refreshing service to your customers. Your Pedipaz Spa system comes with everything you need to start trading. Not only will we deliver and fit your spa system, we´ll provide full training for your staff on your premises leaving you with a Garra Rufa fish care sheet and the comfort of knowing the Pedipez support

Fang-tastic!

Viking remains reveal warriors filed their teeth to appear more ferocious to enemies An axe-swinging ‘rape and pillage’ fighter found in a Viking burial pit had filed his teeth to look more ferocious in battle. The pain without anaesthetic would have been excruciating but it would have proved his status as a great warrior, archaeologists said. The warrior, found in Weymouth, Dorset, had grooves filed into his two front teeth. Scientists also found other bones and decapitated heads in the pit where a new relief road is being built. They think the bodies were young Viking warriors who were executed without mercy after being captured in a fierce battle with the Anglo-Saxons. During analysis of the remains, the pair of front teeth was found to have distinct incisions. Lead scientist David Score, of Oxford Archaeology, said: ‘It’s difficult to say how painful the process of filing teeth may have been, but it wouldn’t have been a pleasant experience. ‘The incisions have been very carefully made and it is most likely that they were filed by a skilled craftsman. ‘The purpose behind filed teeth remains unclear but, as we know these men were warriors, it may have been to frighten opponents

in battle or to show their status as a great fighter.’ The burial pit contained 51 skulls and 54 bodies. Many of the executed men had been decapitated and suffered multiple wounds inflicted by a sharp blade, including one skeleton with six cut marks to the back of the neck, possibly because his captors had tried over and over again to hack off his head. Steve Wallis, an archaeologist at Dorset County Council, said radio carbon dating showed the remains come from about 970 to 1025. He said those dates fell within the period of Viking raids and atrocities on the Anglo-Saxons in Britain. Isotope analysis of teeth found in a severed jaw suggests they were from the Nordic countries. Mr Wallis said: ‘It’s great that the burial pit is surprising us and teaching us more about who these men may have been and what they may have been like. ‘It is very rare that this kind of deliberate dental modification is found in European remains, although it is often found in cultures from around the world, so that it was found in an excavation in Dorset is fantastic.’

How the brain can be trained to erase embarrassing memories

Selective memory really exists and people can train their minds to erase embarrassing moments from their mind, according to scientists. Repressing bad memories for long enough can lead to us forgetting them completely, researchers claim. Scientists used EEG scans to monitor the parts of the brain that became active when volunteers actively tried to forget something. They were also able to pinpoint the exact moment a memory is ‘forgotten’, and claim that long-term suppression of a memory is a sure-fire way of permanently erasing it. A team from Lund University in Sweden said that mastering the technique could be useful for people who suffer from depression or post traumatic stress disorder, where constantly dwelling on upsetting or traumatic memories has a devastating effect on mental health. Lead researcher Gerd Waldhauser said: ‘We know that “forgotten” or repressed feelings often manifest themselves as physiological reactions. ‘Our volunteers were trained to forget neutral information in a controlled laboratory environment. Training to forget a traumatic event would be more complex.’ He added: ‘Our study has not only shown that we can deliberately forget things. ‘Through EEG measurements, it has also managed to capture the exact

moment when the memory is inhibited, that is when the forgetfulness is imposed. ‘The inhibition of memory eases off after a few hours. But the more often information is suppressed, the more difficult it becomes to retrieve it. ‘If the memories have been suppressed over a long period of time, they could be extremely difficult to retriee.’

Jose Blanco’s department said that in relative terms, the decrease seen in 2010 “continues the trend of the previous two years, in which the pace of growth of stock had slowed, from the more pronounced growth in 2009.” As reported by ABC, the Ministry also stated that last year, the slowdown in stock accumulation “reached its peak, reversing slightly, as the pace of reduction in new home construction was similar to 2009, while transactions recorded some recovery”. Surplus stock fell in 12 regions, most prominently in Extremadura (-30.17%), Cantabria (-26.08%) and Navarra (-17.26%). Three regions which together account for 50% of the total stock for 2010 are: Valencia (19.35%), Andalusia (16.33%) and Cataluña (15.03%). Meanwhile, Ceuta and Melilla (0.02%), Cantabria (0.42%), Extremadura (0.53%) and Navarra (0.77%) are the regions with the lowest percentage of the total accumulated stock. The provinces of the Mediterranean coast account for 47.73% of the total stock surplus. The report also highlighted Madrid, Toledo and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Analysing the proportion of surplus stock in each community over the total surplus in each territory, those which have a higher percentage of surplus stock are La Rioja (4.69%), Castilla-La Mancha (4.22%), Valencia (4.15%), Canary Islands (3.8%) and Murcia (3.7%). On the other end are Extremadura (0.54%), Cantabria (0.81%), Basque Community (1.22%), Navarra (1.65%), Madrid (1.72%) and Asturias (1, 88%) with the lowest percentages of surplus stock.

Are more Brits seeking property in Spain?.................................................... There are signs that Brits are taking an interest in property in Spain, it has been reported. Figures released by the Overseas Guides Company (OGC) showed that the number of requests for its publication about buying real estate in the nation rose by 24 per cent between January and May this year, A Place in the Sun revealed. Speaking to the news provider, director of OGC Kim Brown said: “The country continues to appeal because of its high level of Brits already living there providing a settled community of expats, the weather, the lifestyle and the easy access from the UK.” And there are currently some good deals to find on Spanish homes, with the nation’s Central Bank commenting last month that prices may fall further. In an interview with The Olive Press, director general of economics, statistics and research at the financial institution Jose Luis Malo de Molina said that the high number of unsold properties is continuing to drag values down.

Germany Defends Legality of the Euro connexions Rescue Fund.......................................................

17

950 479 502

German Finance Minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, defended before the German Constitutional Court on Tuesday, the legality of the euro rescue fund and the European Union and International Monetary Fund’s aid program for Greece, saying “Germany does not take any decision on measures to stabilise the euro zone without the approval of Parliament” in response to complaints from a conservative deputy and five university professors against the EU and IMF measures to safeguard the single currency. Schäuble stressed that “this is as true for the extension of credits for Greece as it is for the parliamentary decision on the law for the stability mechanism for the euro.” “A common currency does not work without the solidarity of its members,” Schäuble said in the Court headquarters in Karlsruhe, southwest Germany, and reiterated they do not foresee delivering a decision on this case until autumn. This solidarity “must be linked to clear rules and not limited to just a simple commitment to attend, but also be geared towards removing the source of the problems,” said the minister, passionately defending the monetary union. He added: “eliminating the causes would mean that countries with high debts and deficits would have to consolidate their budgets and eliminate structural obstacles to their growth. For the reforms to take effect these countries need time. Time the financial markets have not granted, and financial assistance which European members have provided them with under strict conditions.” After explaining the consequences of the international financial crisis for the euro countries and highlighting the benefits of the single currency for Germany, Schäuble said, according to Cinco Dias, that “everyone is interested in stability. With the euro, Europe is making a contribution to global stability”. “And with our contribution to the security of the common currency, in view of the economic situation of the 21st century, Germany meets the objective of the introduction of our fundamental law, and I quote, as a member of equal rights in a united Europe to serve world peace,” the minister concluded. The complainants consider that the plan to rescue the euro and the aid program for Greece undermines both the German Constitution and the European Union treaties, since grants violate the fundamental right of citizens to participate in the democratic legitimacy of these measures. The claims have been endorsed by the Conservative MP from the Government’s Social Union (CSU) of Bavaria, Peter Gauweiler, and a group of professors on constitutional rights led by law professor, Karl-Albrecht Schachtschneider who has remarked that the “violation of European treaties by these rescue measures is obvious.” Another of the plaintiffs, economics professor Joachim Startabby, said before the session began that his objective is to “save Europe” while Gauweiler commented that Greece’s budgetary situation requires drastic measures like those being taken by Argentina or Turkey. “Declaring bankruptcy is better than a long drawn out declaration of insolvency, which besides, is severely punishable by our criminal law,” said Gauweiler, the only German parliamentarian against the rescue of Greece and the stability program for the euro.

The average price of new housing fell 4.7% in the first half of the year compared to the previous year and was 2.3% down on December 2010, according to a report released on Friday. Cinco Dias stated that the average price of new housing in provincial capitals in June stood at 2,419 €/m2, making a house of 90 m2 equivalent to 217,710 euros. The biggest cuts were in Aragon (8%), Balearic Islands (6.8%), Extremadura (6.6%), Murcia (6.3%), Cantabria (5.7%), Andalusia (5.6% ) and La Rioja (5.5%). In the case of the provincial capitals, the price of new housing rose by (0.9%) in Pontevedra and (0.3%) in Zamora, while it remained unchanged in Palencia and Badajoz and dropped in the rest. The capitals with the highest housing prices were Barcelona (3,720 €/m2), San Sebastian (3,615 €/m2) and Madrid (3,240 € /m2), while the lowest were Murcia (1,387 € /m2), Badajoz (1,389 €/m2) and Cáceres (1,405 € /m2). The study predicts that in the coming months a significant amount of surplus housing will be absorbed, since there is a potential demand, but it depends on the economic situation and the possibilities of funding. Revival in the pace of sales will be “gradual” and “slow” and will come hand-in-hand with lower prices from developers, although it is “closely linked to their ability to support their debt levels”. Given the “drastic” reduction of new promotions, recovery of the sector is dependent on the absorption rate of the stock, which is uncertain because of shrinking demand due to high rates of unemployment, economic uncertainty and tightening credit lines. The report indicates that the ongoing restructuring of the Spanish financial sector “can have a significant impact on the housing market because it affects mainly the institutions traditionally associated with mortgage lending.” La Sociedad de Tasación prepared the report using data of more than 33,000 properties from more than 2,350 real estate agents and over 400 cities and towns across the country.

SOLTIMES JULY 2011

Living outside the UK? New UK residence rules announced!

Here is some really good news for retired UK expatriates who have been struggling with the UK’s 90 days residence rule. Under Treasury proposals, the rule is being made much clearer and much easier. Most retired expatriates will now be able to spend up to 119 days in the UK in each UK tax year, yet remain outside of HM Revenue & Customs’ clutches. The booklet HMRC 6 (which replaced IR20) will be torn up. If these new rules are implemented, they will commence on 6th April 2012. For example, if you are retired and have been non-UK tax resident for the previous three UK tax years ending 5th April 2012, then you will be able to spend up to 119 days in your UK home without being deemed as a UK tax resident. This assumes that: 1. Your spouse/partner is not UK tax resident nor are your children under 18 years old UK resident. 2. You have a home outside of the UK as well as your UK one. 3. You no longer work.

19

by David Franks, Chief Executive, Blevins Franks You can even spend up to 182 days in the UK if in each of the two previous UK tax years you have spent less than 90 days in the UK. A day is counted only if you are in the UK at midnight. If just one of the factors 1, 2 or 3 above were breached, then you would be limited to 89 days in the UK. If two of those factors were breached, you could be limited to 44 days. The rules above are those for someone “Arriving” in the UK, defined as someone who has not been a UK tax resident for each of the previous three UK tax years. The rules for somebody who is a UK “Leaver” are a little tougher. If these draft proposals are approved, the new rules are a major advance in providing certainty for individuals who have homes in the UK and visit there frequently. This article only summarises some of the key points in the rules and is not meant to be a full explanation. Contact an adviser like Blevins Franks for advice specific to your own circumstances.

There have been protests taking place all over Spain against evictions being carried out because homeowners have fallen behind on mortgage payments. Reuters reported that people have been fighting against rising unemployment, which has resulted in many households struggling with their bills. Property prices in Spain have dropped significantly since their peak, which means a lot of people now owe more than their home is worth. Analyst at Idealista.com Fernando Encinar told the news provider that the problems have arisen because “Spain has been so much more exposed to the property bubble”, which has been compounded by falling values and rising job losses. Last month, prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero unveiled proposals to change Spanish law to help reduce the risk of foreclosure. Bloomberg revealed that under current rules, banks can claim back the deficit from homeowners if their properties are repossessed and then sold for less than the amount owed on the mortgage. Zapatero aims to change this, so that handing the residence over to the bank would clear the debt, regardless of how much it is later sold for.

Spanish property purchase to be affected by new EU directive.......

Expatriates who have purchased Spanish properties are to be affected by a new European Union directive that looks set to be implemented across member states, one expert has claimed. Helena Walsh of Cicero Consulting told moneymarketing.com that the legislation, which aims to provide better levels of protection for mortgage buyers, should boost the information ex-pats receive on foreign homes. The new ruling will require financial institutions to increase transparency and encourage buyers to compare mortgage products offered by a number of providers if they are taking out a loan secured by their home. “Many expats have buy-to-let properties on a personal basis which are currently regarded as commercial mortgages but will [be] affected as they are personal borrowing secured against a property,” she explained. Liberal Democrat MP Diana Wallis recently claimed a better system is required in order to guarantee protection for those purchasing property or land in another European country.

TEMPUS FUGIT..... I can accept the fact that I am getting older – after all, I’ve been doing it all my life. However, there are aspects of it that are not to my liking. For instance, there is that inevitable condition called ‘middle age spread’ when the body takes it upon itself to expand, especially around the middle. Why should it be that as a teenager I could neck a cream tea and be on my way without consequences, whereas now, when I have reached an age when I can truly appreciate and savour a cream tea, even thinking about it increases my girth. It’s not fair, and I object to it! Then there is the matter of memory. In my school years I could remember several pages of information just long enough to get it written down on an exam paper before forgetfulness set in. (For younger readers, in those far-off days we had to actually write answers, with a pen, using correct spelling, punctuation and whole sentences, on a sheet of paper.) Nowadays I find that my memory has put up the ‘Gone to lunch’ sign and forgotten to employ a replacement to mind the shop in its absence. There is clumsy. Unfortunately that section of my brain that deals with physical co-ordination is on a completely different time continuum to the rest of my body. It has no idea that my body can no longer perform with the same speed and dexterity, let alone confidence that it once had. Nowadays it takes as

SING-A-LONG-A-REVOLUTION There was a marvelous concert two weeks ago at the Orihuela Costa Resort in La Zenia. Eight hundred music lovers packed into the modern auditorium to get their early summer musical fix and an ear full of ‘The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber’, staged and performed by Nigel Hopkins and his choir Melody Makers International along with his brilliant new junior choir Cantemos. It was a wonderfully inspiring evening and left us eagerly looking forward to the next one in January, when the theme will be music from the Walt Disney movies. All this coincided with an ITV television documentary entitled ‘The Choir that Rocks’, screened over two weeks and which followed the machinations and outstanding dedication of Caroline Redman Lusher, the founder of Rock Choir in the UK. Apparently there are more than 14o individual choirs under the Rock Choir umbrella throughout Britain and Ireland, and the documentary culminated in the coming together of 8000 participants in a massive concert at Wembley Arena. Young and old joined with the disabled and the grieving and the lonely for a singing session that should have had me groaning and reaching for another cold beer, yet instead I found it a deeply moving experience and incredibly uplifting. The bond between the participants was touching and impressive, and not for the first time I was reminded of the awesome power of music. Then I got to wondering what could be achieved on a national scale with a view to changing our country for the better, using the same principals. We all know about politicians. Whatever their leanings or their stated beliefs, they are when you get right down to it, all clones of the same stereotype. The rhetoric is the same, the promises tediously repetitive, and the end results depressingly similar. Politicians are a separate species - though unfortunately not an endangered one - but can you imagine the House of Commons if it was genuinely – and I mean genuinely - made up of representatives from every strata of society and all brought together with the express purpose of making our country a beacon of hope and an example of what can be achieved when people pull unselfishly together. No ulterior motives, no feathering of personal nests and no delusions of grandeur.

All politicians declare this to be their ambition of course, but their subsequent actions tend to give lie to this. I have found that those who blow their own trumpets of understanding, always seem to be tone deaf to the real needs and aspirations of ordinary people. As with every new Prime Minister, I had hoped that David Cameron would be different, but of course we are already getting the same old garbage. My expectation was that he would defy his critics and in spite of his privileged past put the interests of the ordinary people first, but nope, ‘fraid not. It may sound a strange way to judge a man, but I always shook my head in disbelief when Blair or Brown suddenly appeared on TV with our troops in Iraq or Afghanistan. There they were, looking as out of place as a Yak at the Albert Hall, each trying to look as if he was one of the lads and failing miserably. And now DC is doing the same thing – jacket off, still wearing his suit trousers and hand made shoes from Lobb of London in the Afghan desert, but with shirt sleeves rolled up as if to say, “See, I’m one of you and I mean business”. None of them have got a clue! Twenty odd years ago, the mayor of Bury St Edmunds, a fellow villager and our serving Borough Councillor, approached me with a view to my standing for the seat on his retirement. I felt downright chuffed and honoured that he had thought of me as a suitable candidate for his soon to be vacant country brogues. But having taken it home, picked it over like a Boxing Day turkey and looked at it from every angle, I politely declined. And it wasn’t for any other reason than it would have taken all of my free time away from my full time job. Then three years later I received a telephone call from the chairman of the local Conservative Party to ask if I would accept their nomination for the position of Suffolk County Councillor that was coming up for re-election. Well, I was even chuffter and more honoured – this would have been a definite step up the ladder, and could even lead to a position with expenses damn it! But again, as much as I was tempted, I turned down the offer. What is it about me, I asked myself? Is it because I speak my mind, or do I really look that dishonest? You see,

much skill and courage as I can muster to go down a flight of steps without clutching the handrail as though it were a winning Lottery ticket. This general malaise annoys me. Maybe I could accept not being as quick, as strong, or as agile in mind and body as I used to be, if at times pieces of me did not withdraw their services altogether. To me that seems totally unreasonable. For instance, I enjoy a snooze on the porch in my ultra-comfy recliner chair. Yet when I wake up, my arms continue to sleep – they went to sleep at the same time as the rest of me, so why can’t they wake up at the same time as the rest of me? My legs are no better. When I stand up after a brief respite on the sofa they seem to have forgotten how to walk, and for several seconds I move about like a camel with corns. And why can’t I sit down without an ‘Aaah’ and stand up without an ‘Uurgh’? That never used to happen! But have you ever noticed that you are never the right age? Should you ever query your right or suitability for something the answer is invariably ‘You’re too young/old for that.’

‘Cast Off’.......... So, as we mentioned last week, it’s time to head back from your destination. We are assuming you will be going ‘downwind’, (with the wind at your back). To put this in very basic nautical terms…we are preparing to jibe. There are commands which you will learn as you move forward with experience, but I’m here to explain, in as brief a manner as possible, what this entails and what the pitfalls are. With the leeward run, you must be aware at all times of the possibilities of the boom sweeping across the boat in a rapid, (and therefore potentially dangerous!) sometimes unpredictable manner. The accidental jibe is a phrase you will become more and more familiar with as we go on this seafaring journey together. However, before reaching for the incontinence pads, there are many hints on how to avoid problems…starting with the cardinal rule of sailing. Be vigilant! As most of us sail with others, it is vital one of us concentrates solely on the wheel or tiller, giving instructions to our crew explaining what we are trying to achieve. “Ready To Jibe”, the mainsail is brought in by the apart from attaining the lofty position of deputy chairman of our Parish Council, I had no desire to become a despised politician, and more than this – be seduced into becoming a member of a comfortable club and the self styled ruling elite. So let’s get Caroline, Nigel Hopkins and their choirs together - stick the Birmingham and London Philharmonic Orchestras on floats, and all march on Parliament. Well why n o t ? Nothing else has worked.

...with Robbie France crew towards the centre of the boat. As the helmsman steers the boat through the wind… get ready! The sails will fill with wind rapidly, (hopefully…that’s what we’re out there for!), the boom will want to swing across the boat, taking out all and sundry… if they’re not careful. The boom swings over the boat, the crew will allow the mainsail to move into position before winching it back into a place allowing the wind to fill the jib, again the crew will trim the jib accordingly. There you go. Get out there and practice your tacking & jibing, you’ll be fine. Tight sails to all and I’ll see you next week

oh, by the way....

It took its time, but finally summer has descended on us. The thermometer has shot up to 38-40º and Spanish press is full of warnings and advice on how to deal with the heat. I have always found it odd that it should be necessary to offer caution about scorching heat to a population that for centuries have been accustomed to live in this climate. To warn us pale blue ones from up North I can understand; after all, we spray ourselves with oil and lie sizzling in the sun for hours. We do drink a lot …….. of alcohol! And then we go home with our burned flesh and hang-over to recover! Not only human flesh is burning side-by-side along the Mediterranean coast, the country side also sees its share of burning. The Spanish have a passion for picnics, and favour mountains and forests as destinations for the family outing. They stuff granny & grandpa, uncle & aunts, kids, and heaps of sausages, hamburgers, bread, salad, and drinks in to their car and off they go. They love it and they have a great time. However, when it comes to cleaning up after the party, they either do not think or do not care. The ashes from the BBQ are thrown to the side – and maybe dad pees on it to extinguish the last embers -, and bottles are left or thrown into the under-growth. Both cause several – and in some cases severe – forest-fires every year. We live on the edge of a nature reserve and have – touch wood – up till now been spared of any catastrophes. Nevertheless we were close some years ago, when our fat, little, “tio Pencho”-speaking neighbour waddled the few yards past our house, and disposed of the ashes from that day’s barbacoa of tocino and morcilla. Luckily my husband discovered the smoke from the still burning ashes in time, and thus prevented the fire to spread. Same neighbour was the one who told us about the horrible fire some 50-60 years ago, from which the whole mountain is still recovering. Telefónica – or Movistar as they now call themselves – are at it again. I read a reader’s letter in a local newspaper from a man who in despair after numerous phone calls from this conglomerate company’s telemarketing department told them to send him the offer in writing, and a couple of days later received the hardware for the service per mail. When he said he did not want it, they claimed that his verbal interest during the last phone call counts as a legal agreement here in Spain?!?!??!? Wow – next time my bank says they will look at my loan request I’ll sue them for breach of contract, if they do not give me the money. Telefónica – oh, sorry! Movistar – then proceeded to cut his line, contracted from another supplier, when he said he wanted to cancel the new “contract”. I have been a reasonably satisfied Telefónica client for years – sort of! I had a mobile, pen-drive Internet connection with them, and with that and my mobile phone, I had saved up a big amount of points. I thought it was a great idea to use this for a pay-as-you-go mobile for my husband, and could get it totally free if I took it with “zona azul”. Yes, I was told to sign up for 18 month with my Internet number, but I did not consider that a problem as I felt 35 € per month for Internet was good value for the money. Then I received the March invoice for 233.54€ for use in February and March, and was informed that from April 1st I would be invoiced for calls at the current price. I was also informed that if I was not in agreement with the new conditions, the law allows me to cancel – which I did. But they will not accept the cancellation unless I pay for the pay-as-you-go that I got for free. Unless they can show me that I have agreed to pay whatever amount the company feels fit to charge me, they will not see a cent from me – and they are welcome to close the line, I have another connection now! I’ll tell you what is going on here. They have a horde of dubious solicitors sitting scanning the law for loop-holes, and equally dubious sociologists and psychologists evaluating clients’ general knowledge about legal matters, and with that information they operate just on the edge of the law – with success! salt? on back cut to Want Try seaweed granules on your chips instead

High blood pressure, strokes and early deaths could be prevented by replacing salt with seaweed granules in bread and processed foods, scientists claim. The granules deliver a strong flavour but are low in salt, which is blamed for thousands of early deaths every year. The benefit of seaweed as a salt substitute is just one aspect of its potential, a study has found. It also contains a vast array of vital micronutrients, while consumption is said to make consumers feel full, which means it could be useful in reducing obesity levels. Seaweed could theoretically provide a valuable new food source for a world struggling to feed rising populations. A study by the Government-funded Food Innovation Project discovered that consumers find it almost impossible to tell when seaweed granules replaced salt in baked goods. Two of the UK’s five major supermarkets are considering using it in breads following taste tests and research confirming its safety. Scientists at Sheffield Hallam University have been working with commercial suppliers to produce granules from Arctic wrack seaweed,

found off the coast of the UK and Norway. The idea is that these could be used to replace salt in supermarket ready meals, sausages and even cheese. The research also suggests the granules can destroy or inhibit the growth of food poisoning bugs in meat products. The granules are healthier because their sodium level is just 3.5 per cent compared with the 40 per cent in salt used by the food industry. Seaweed has long featured in the diets of families in China and Japan. Dr Craig Rose, of the Seaweed Health Foundation, said: ‘It has a very good and defined taste, which can be a great benefit for various foods.’ The maximum daily salt consumption recommended for those 11 and over is 6g a day. Experts claim that if the nation cut to this level it would prevent high blood pressure and 70,000 heart attacks and strokes each year. However, a British study published last week challenged this view. The Cochrane Review, which analysed data from seven studies on nearly 6,500 people found there was ‘no clear benefit’ or switching to a reduced salt diet.

METHOD

Purée half the beans with the garlic, shallot, lime juice and a little splash of olive oil in a food processor with enough of the bean liquid to loosen the blades. Heat 1tbsp of the olive oil in a pan, add the bean purée and stir in the rest of the beans for about 10 minutes, until thickened. Season with salt, pepper and a pinch of ground cumin and set aside. To make tostadas, heat 5cm (2in) vegetable oil in a large, deep pan until simmering hot and carefully add the tortillas in small batches until crisp and golden. Remove and drain on kitchen paper. Place the tortillas on a couple of serving plates and spread the beans on the tostadas. Top with the crumbled feta, avocado, shredded lettuce and serve with hot salsa or relish.

Heat some olive oil for deep-frying to 190°C. Working with one person’s portion of fish at a time, season each piece of fish well with the sea salt and dredge heavily in the semolina flour. Give it a good, vigorous shake to remove the excess flour, then drop the fish into the hot olive oil and fry until crisp and golden. First cook the red mullet, hake or other fish and prawns for 30 seconds, then add the squid rings to the oil and cook for a further 30 seconds, by which time all the fish should be cooked through. Lift the fish out of the oil as soon as it is ready, drain briefly on a baking tray lined with kitchen paper, and arrange on a warmed serving plate. Garnish with the lemon wedges and serve as quickly as you can, while the food is still piping hot, then go on to cook the next portion.

DESSERT -flavoured Water Ice

Put the sugar, glucose and water in a pan and heat to dissolve. Increase the heat and boil for 3 minutes. Pour into a bowl and leave to get cold. This is the sugar solution you will need for each different-flavoured water ice. To make the lime water ice, juice the limes – you should get 300ml (10fl oz). Put the juice in the bowl of an ice cream maker or a freezerproof container. When the sugar solution is cold, add to the juice, mix and churn in an ice cream maker following manufacturer’s instructions or use the ‘still freeze’ method. To make the grapefruit water ice, juice the grapefruits (to get 300ml/ ½pt) and repeat the method for lime water ice. To make the orange water ice, juice the oranges and the lemon (to get 300ml/½pt) and repeat. Serve individually or in

INGREDIENTS

supermarkets 275ml (9½fl oz) water For the juices 10-14 limes 2-3 grapefruits 3-6 oranges 1 lemon

Each citrus flavour will need the following sugar solution: 175g (6oz) caster sugar 25g (1oz) glucose (dextrose powder), available in

layers in small serving bowls. The Still Freeze Method You can use this method with any ice cream recipe that you find. You need to either use shallow baking pans or a container specifically designed for still freezing ice cream. Mine is small and has liquid in the sides of a metal bowl. When the liquid freezes, it helps the freezing process. To make still freeze ice cream you put the ingredients together as directed, and then put the mixture in the freezer for about 45 minutes. Usually by this time, the sides are frozen. Take it out, give it a quick stir to mix the frozen and liquid parts together and put it back in the freezer for another 45 minutes. Again, when the sides are frozen, take it out and mix it together. Basically, you will be taking it out every 45 minutes to stir it, until it is mostly frozen.

Vera Orphanage......................... F.A.C.E. Donate 2,500€....

Over the last few years the residents of la Alfoquia, Zurgena and surrounding areas have raised thousands of euros for the Vera children’s home. The latest event was a comedy and musical evening held at the Bar Union, where 610 euros was raised for the said charity. Due to the success of this latest evening and public demand another evening has been arranged for the 14th August, at the moment the venue is to be confirmed, but it will be a comedy and musical evening, with the artists international comedy star Justin Sane, Mr Romance ‘Brian Dee’, Steve( Rod Stewart) Fisher and Dave (Sax) Sharp. The cost of this evening will be 10€ and will include a coach transfer from various pick up points and a superb buffet. A minimum of 500€ will be guaranteed for the children’s home and it is hoped that this figure will be well exceeded. I would like to take this opportunity of thanking everybody who have supported these evenings in the past, and without their support and the artists who have appeared the monies would not have been raised, many thanks Peter Dell

CHARITY MARKET FOR THE FRANCISCAN NUNS AND THE HOMELESS ........

It all started three years ago when Clara Pozo organised a small market with 9 stalls. Her companion next to her was selling things to raise money for an orphanage in Burma. Clara thought “Why don’t I do this to raise money for the poor of Vera?” So she arranged a meeting with the Mayor, he liked the idea, and told her that the most needy were the Franciscan nuns who looked after the homeless. She put this into effect last summer, with 34 stalls, raising €2,870. This year there are 52 stalls and she hopes to more than double last year’s takings. She is very pleased with this project because as well as helping the nuns she is giving 52 stallholders the opportunity to sell their wares. For more information contact Clara (Spanish) 630 061 586 or Shelagh 687 149 844

SOLTIMES JUNE 2011

pause for thought

“Love is longsuffering and kind. Love is never envious, never boastful nor proud. Love is never rude or hurtful, but is always unselfish and even-tempered, keeping no record of wrongs. Love doesn’t delight in evil but rejoices in truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and never gives up.” So wrote St Paul in his letter to Christians living in Corinth nearly 2000 years ago, and I’m sure most people would agree that these words are as relevant and meaningful today as they were then. How much hurt could be avoided in our society if only we loved like that. How many broken relationships, with all the resultant trauma and anguish, could have been prevented if only people had loved each other as Paul envisaged. But let’s not forget that these words were not written for the benefit of society at large, nor as advice for happy marriage, relevant though they may be in both such situations, but quite specifically as instructions for Christians working and serving together in the Church. So how tragic it is that down the centuries there has often been so little love displayed within the Christian Church, prompting many to condemn it as the source of so much dissent and strife. And how sad that even now, so many who claim to be followers of Christ are often quick to criticise and condemn others, with little evidence of the love expected of them. So, I necessarily challenge myself: Am I ever impatient or unkind? Am I ever selfish, envious, boastful or proud? Am I ever rude or hurtful in remarks I make to or about others? Do I harbour grievances against others or lose my temper with them? Do I gladly listen to rumour and gossip without seeking verification? And I need to remember that St Paul asserts that without this type of love, no amount of good works, of religious deeds, knowledge or faith are of any value at all. So I suspect I’m not alone in feeling challenged by his words. There are a number of English Language Churches in the region for any wishing to Worship; further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

BEWARE OF SUMMER SNAKE BITES!

As youngsters we were taught that it was a Spanish “asp” that nibbled on Cleopatra and caused her death. BUNK! Even if written by the bard of the English yard. Once while following the Madrid Open Golf tournament one of the players saw a snake, being terribly inquisitive he picked it up and was struck twice. David Faherty was his name and he won’t do that again as he was leading the tournament and his hand swelled up so much he couldn’t hold a club nor compete for two more weeks. Snakes only come in two forms: bad and worse. You pretty much have to look hard and long before you find one, still, don’t take chances. I have been following closely the old news story of the hi-way grass cutter who was bitten by a vibora last October while working in El Ejido. He has just died. That’s a long and painful death. I made a few reporter type calls and no one wanted to talk with me. The more I asked, the more a lid seemed to be pushed over the issue. Finally I decided to enquire here through the hospitals, discreetly and SNAP. What with all the budget restrictions anti-venom has been low on the list of hospital essentials and no one had it in all of Andalucia. When it finally arrived from Murcia—it all was too late. Self preservation should be ranked above bravado!

PIC: I had seen the dancing cobra picture taken so many times that I had already had made up my mind that it could be better “photograph” if I was to get down low and make the snake look taller. So, when the opportunity came up in Marrakesh I dived right for it, low as I could go and got the snake tall and powerful. Whereupon I was informed by the snake charmer “Misser, dat viper next to your face is a lot meaner than this cobra”. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said it was an ‘awesome’ development for Skype as his company takes on the might of the internet search engine. Google last week launched its Google+ service, which also has a feature that allows video calls. The two companies are now locked in a head-to-head technological race. Until now Facebook users have been limited to instant text chat and the move to incorporate Skype takes their game to the next level. Both companies agreed the deal to allow video chat to be integrated into the site which will mean people can have ‘face-toface’ conversations with just one click of the button. Mr Zuckerberg also revealed that one in every nine people in the world now has a Facebook account, while its number of users has shot up to 750million. Google+, which launched on June

28, includes video conferencing for up to 10 people on its application called Hangouts. The new service is currently open to people on an ‘invitation only’ basis whereas anybody can have a Facebook account and the latest move by the site could hamper the success of Google+. Skype boss Tony Bates said that seeing the product used in Facebook was ‘really gratifying’. Rumours of the deal began with invitations for the event, which featured the picture of a face inside a speech bubble. The move could dramatically increase the use of Skype, which currently has 170 million active users compared to Facebook’s 750 million. The partnership would bring Facebook closer to Microsoft, which is one of its shareholders after investing $240m in the company in 2007 and bought Skype for $8.5 billion in May.

‘London Bill’ fished Macenas rocks for a couple of small sea bass and also had a nice bonito which weighed about 3lbs. ‘Squidly Sid’ and some mates from the Albox fishing club fished San Juan island on Steve’s boat ‘Tomahawk’ and caught about 45 fish, including doradas and painted combers. They tried trolling for bonito and dorados but without any success. Brian went out with me, ‘Kenolo’, Basil and Morry. Morry had a good red snapper weighing about 3lbs and other than that it was a poor day with only a few pandoras and pouting being caught. Back in the marina we had a coffee with Mick and ‘Captain Steve’ who I have nicknamed ‘Orca Steve’ because he’s not sea sick any more when he goes out Brian went out a second time in the week and I joined him again with ‘Inflatable Andy’ who should be renamed ‘Deflatable

I lost a big conger which took a small piece of prawn on a size 1.0 hook instead of the whole prawn I set for him on a conger rig, he bit the hook off. We caught Spanish mackerel, bogues, pandoras, blue mouths, lots of pouting and a swallow tailed sea perch. Paul had great success baiting hooks with his lunch, chorizo sausage! On July 8th Forum Golf Society competed in a 2 Man No Scotch strokeplay competition at Alboran, and some superb scoring saw just 5 shots seperating the first 18 pairs home, with countback needed to decide all the major places. First were the pair of Sandra Vincent & Phil Elam with a net 63, the same as second-placed Andy Birch & Howard Tyers, whilst Alboran members Ray Dixon & Steve Gilmore made full use of their local knowledge to secure third place with an excellent 64, the same score as Anne & John Holder (4th) and Mike Duckham & Bob Cowan (5th). A superb 4 under gross score of 68 (net 65) with no bogies from John Bridgen & Richard Swaine also deserves a special mention, even though it was only good enough on

the day for sixth place ! Nearest the pin prizes were on offer at all four Par 3´s, with these being won by Phil Elam, Derek Manning, John Bridgen & Keith Kingdon. Forum´s next event, a Special member´s North v South Team Matchplay at Marina on July 15th has attracted a very large field, with plenty of regional pride at stake, and this will be followed by July 22nd Tee Choice Stableford at Aguilon (with free beer !) August 5th Stableford at La Envia August 19th Double Par Medal (also Forum´s 100th full event) at Aguilon For more information contact Phil Elam on 666 847840 / philjelam@yahoo.co.uk, or see www.forumgolfsociety.webs. com

Greetings from God’s little waiting room, where this week we start with Super Matt’s charity do in aid of “The Jayne Tomlinson Foundation”, and what a do it was. On a hot Thursday afternoon, we congregated at “The Watering Hole” where, we firstly enjoyed an excellent BBQ, unfortunately with no “dunky bread”. Then the first “turn”, Norman Collier, sorry Lodgie with dodgy amplifier, what a performer, despite this encumbrance, he gave us some wonderful entertainment. Then the raffle draw, which raised an impressive €850, which quickly became €900, with a donation from Ali from El Naranjo. At this point I lost track of proceedings due to the molestations of Mata Hari, Elli May and Ali, but I believe the final total came to €1350. How the hell does this little community do it, time and time again. At one point I do believe I saw J.C’s hat pass before my eyes, but that could have been the heat, nothing

else. A big, big thank you to you all.

supported this event.

This was followed by another favourite of ours J.C., with another fine performance, and with some decent speakers. The “do” went on until early evening, when people wandered home, tired and emotional!!!

The “Merry Widows” were there in force, with part of their “Panzer Division”. There is something serious afoot, there is some talk of a birthday bash, may The Lord preserve us, and a group Sunday lunch. More when my spies report back. Talking of which, the “Matriarch’s” trip to Jamaica, has set my brain in motion, and has raises more questions than you would at first think. When I have sorted out the questions chronologically, I will share my thoughts with you.

The more astute of you will have noticed the mention of Ellie May, she along with Jethro are here on their usual “tobacco run”, no not the smoking type, chewing tobacco. See photo of our 2 shrinking violets, Jethro and Grommet, then Mata Hari, wearing what appears to be a false moustache as a disguise and Ellie May . Grommet is over the moon with the arrival of these two, as he is now able to converse in his own native tongue!!! A good day in good company, and all for a very good cause. I enclose a snap of Bagpuss, in one of his few moments of lucidity, dancing with dear Peggy, who would dance to the chimes of an ice cream van, and some of the minions who so generously

Because of the report on this very worthy cause, the tale of “Mini Margret” and the dominoes, Elli May’s trip to the big town and the scandalous tales someone is spreading about me, which I will strongly refute, will have to wait until next week, sorry. That’s all for this week. Until the next time. Tight lines, Uncle Albert

Is being on the water cooler? Yes, I’m sure it is but due to my confrontation with a pair of steps, that’s not been possible recently. I’m suffering with muscle pain and in need of some soft muscle therapy, that is going to happen on August 4th - I’m looking forward to it. Meanwhile, on the water of Garrucha our cruisers - Catalac, Infinity, Magregor, Blitzen, Sheba - have been checking the water temperature along with the Devon Yawl and dinghies - Osprey, Lark, 420, Casi Casi, Pastinaca, Topper, Catapult and Hobiecat etc... Quite a few of our sailors are back in the UK enjoying the rain and some of them are preparing for “Cowes Week”, the highlight of the UK sailing season since 1826. With up the 40 races a day and a 1000 boats taking part it is possibly the most famous sailing Regatta in the World. Back in the mid 1970´s when I had moved from dinghy racing to cruising, I would take “Elizabeth Ann”, my 28ft sailing cruiser from Poole Dorset to the Marina at East Cowes, the mooring fees were reasonable in those days.

It’s an unbelievable spectacle; this year there will be more than 8000 Sailors competing, it’s a “must see” if you are in the South of England – it runs from 6th to 13th of August. Now, the Extreme 40 sailing series in Boston USA 4th of July celebrations but not for an American Skipper as the Kiwis snatch victory in the final minutes of their US Debut Dean Barker´s Emirate Team New Zealand clinched victory at Act 4 of the Event, in the last race of the Series, even though the Americans had a 8 point lead going into the start of the last race on the last day. If I remember correctly the last race of the Series is for double points, as it is in a number of regattas these days! I’m not sure I go along with the idea but “ours is not to reason why”, However the Kiwis are my favourite so good luck to them. I look forward to seeing you for coffee at “Rincon del Puerto”, Garrucha, 11 am Saturday or Sunday, take care, John Tel: 950 475 157/658 548 790 johntalliss@gmail.com www.sailrway.com

In addition, on Thursday 7th July members and

friends made a visit to Asprodalba in Vera to see and meet the staff as well as seeing and hearing the new music equipment which was purchased as a result of funds raised by members, family, and friends of the late Pat Townsend. Pat was instrumental in the society raising funds for Asprodalba which was here chosen charity 2600 euros in the past year. The founder of Asprodalba Dr. Ignacio Martin Cuadrado spoke about Pat and in a lovely tribute said Pat will always be with them and looking down on them from heaven. Dr Ignacio then made a presentation to Pats husband Alan of a plaque which was made by the pupils. On behalf of Valle De Este golf society and Alan our secretary Alan we would like to thank family members, friends and businesses who supported us in our efforts to raise funds for Asprodalba

student Ossian Guerrero Green was crowned double World Champion, taking Gold in Sparring and Flying high front kick, he also won Silver for his Patterns. The clubs Chief Instructor, Michael Williams, was clearly delighted with the performance of both students. He was very impressed with the dedication, spirit, and commitment they have shown during their preparation and their sheer hard work and determination to do well in the competition. This tournament was the clubs first experience of a major international competition, a daunting prospect for anyone but particularly at World Championship

level. However, previous medal successes at National level both here and in Scotland did help to boost their confidence and to give of

Alonso hailed the victor at Silverstone

FERNANDO Alonso is back on the podium at last after winning the Silverstone Grand Prix – his first victory since Korea last year.

The Ferrari driver has broken the run of Red Bull victories after Sebastian Vettel has practically dominated the field so far this season. Taking advantage of Vettel’s mistake in changing his tyres during lap 27, Alonso has now gone up to fourth place in the world classification – but is still behind Vettel, who remains in the number one spot even after dropping to second place at Silverstone today. Fellow Red Bull member Mark Webber (Australia) took third place, ahead of Brazil’s Felipe Massa (Ferrari) in fifth, and

the UK’s Lewis Hamilton (McLaren), who received overwhelming support from the British public and rolled up in fourth place. Around 105,000 spectators, mostly from the UK, filled the stadium at Silverstone. Spain’s Jaime Alguersuari, from Barcelona (Toro Rosso) was in the points again when he came in 10th, unlike the UK’s Jenson Button, despite racing on home turf. Another surprise of the day was Mexico’s Sergio Pérez (Sauber), who came in 7th place, taking advantage of Button’s stroke of bad luck when he found that his front right-hand wheel had not been screwed on properly as he left the pits.
