SOLTIMES NOVEMBER 2010

x-treme Now while you’re thinking about that one, what about a spot of Buildering... - the act of climbing up the

outside of buildings and other artificial structures, usually on the outside. Buildering combines “building” with the climbing term “bouldering”. It is done without ropes or protection, and may be dangerous – do these people have a different understanding of the word ‘dangerous’? – and is often practiced outside legal bounds, and is thus mostly undertaken under the cover of night. Spectacular acts of buildering, such as free soloing skyscrapers, are usually done by lone, experienced climbers, often attracting large crowds of passersby and media attention.

Oakland rapper Mistah F.A.B. popularised the term with his hit song “Ghost Ride It”, which was played on radio and television stations throughout the United States; the accompanying video was much criticised due to its ‘instructions’ on how to ghost ride (as well as its use of the car from the film Ghostbusters without the express approval from Viacom!!) Ghost riding can be dangerous - you don’t say! - and has resulted in three ‘known’ deaths!

Ironically, it is Pistorius’s sense of fair play that has brought about this situation. Because he felt that he had an unfair advantage over other disabled athletes, he applied to be regarded as able-bodied. He is a victim of not only his own success, but also of his moral conscience.

They were originally patented by Alexander Böck, from Germany in 2003, hence the name PowerBocks.

So this superb athlete, recipient of the ‘BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award’ for outstanding courage and achievement in the face of adversity, is effectively prevented from partaking in his chosen sport!

They have been a blessing and a curse for South African athlete Oscar Pistorius. The double amputee, known as ‘the fastest man with no legs’ has recently been barred from competing as an able-bodied athlete because it is thought

This sport probably won’t kill you, just hurt a lot if you get it wrong. Powerbocking is the act of jumping and running, with elasticlike spring-loaded stilts. When used to perform extreme jumping, running and acrobatics it is known as ‘Bocking’ or ‘PowerBocking’ after the inventor.

that the blades give him an unfair advantage. Similarly, his status in the world of disabled athletics is dubious, for the same reason.

In the 1930s a somewhat more serious, though still lighthearted, account of Cambridge undergraduate buildering appeared in popular print.

Although usually a solo sport, it has become a popular group activity, and similar to rock climbing, routes are established and graded for difficulty. The great Alpinist, Geoffrey Winthrop Young, while a student at Cambridge University in the 1890s, engaged in “roof climbing” and wrote and published what was in effect a buildering guide to one of the colleges. It is probably the first documentation of the activity.

Whilst the thought of putting your automatic car in ‘drive’, or just allow it to idle and then climb out while the car is still rolling and dance beside it, or better still on the roof or bonnet, may never occur to a normal person, Ghost riding is one of the latest trends to be popularised by hyphy culture - a style of music and dance primarily associated with the Bay Area hip hop culture in the US. It originated in Oakland, California, and the term “ghost ride the whip” was given nationwide exposure in E-40’s 2006 song “Tell Me When to Go”.
