local NEWS UPDATE...... Murcia

Figures for September show that almost 99% of newly unemployed people are young women. Last September unemployment rose in the Region of Murcia by 0.98% to a total of 149,569 registered unemployed persons, 9.74 % more than the previous year. Out of the number of newly unemployed 1,427 are women and 22 men. Last month, in Murcia, there were 44,000 contracts, representing an increase of 7,712 (21.25%) from the previous month, though only 7.50% are permanent and 92.50% are temporary. The number registered on Social Security decreased by 7,394 (-1.49%) last month.

The Roman Catholic charity Caritas is struggling to keep up with demands on its resources as more and more people become victims of the recession’s austerity measures. Figures released by the charity show that in 2010, Caritas was feeding one million people across Spain. This year the charity estimates that 22% of Spanish households were living below the poverty line, or about 11 million people, which is double the figure for 2007. Further grim reading from their statistics shows that nearly a third of families were having difficulty surviving until the end of each month and 600,000 were without an income of any sort at all, while homeless estimates stand at over 30,000 people. These figures are largely a result of the unemployment rate - 25% overall, with more than 50% of this number being in the under 25 age bracket. Caritas branches along the Costas are launching campaigns for more donors to help fund its work. This work is far wider than the commonly known help with food and clothing; the charity also offers assistance with rent and utility bills. It has intervened directly in cases where landlords have threatened to throw families out into the street, discussing realistic rent reductions, and has stepped in with emergency payments of rent and bills. Money is never given directly to the people requesting the help, but help is given irrespective of race, colour or creed. The problem is a double one, in that as times get harder, those who gave are now themselves finding it hard to make ends meet. Financial donations have dwindled over the past year, and it is only very careful housekeeping that has enabled the charity to keep fulfilling its aims. Caritas branches are appealing for help in the form of donations of money and nonperishable foods, and is looking with hope towards the ex-pat community, who have over the years been some of the most generous donors.

Javea

More than 200 people attended a meeting at the Casa de Cultura with Javea’s Councillor for Finance, Oscar Anton, who was attempting to answer concerns by

ex-pats and to explain how this year’s tax would revert to 1994 land values, thereby cutting Ayuntamiento income by seven million euros, but at the same time almost halving the tax bill. He said more than 3,000 claims for repayment had been received by the Ayuntamiento but after taking advice from the independent body SUMA, the council would not repay people, and that in any case, the money was not there with which to do this. The Ayuntamiento believes that the valuations made by the Catastral Office were completely wrong. ‘Yet the Ayuntamiento have been sending out those valuations year by year!’ said Mr Anton. ‘In 2007 they concluded the valuations were wrong but continued to send out bills that were completely wrong – so our lawyers say the best option is to claim against the Catastral Office.’ He hoped it would be possible to contact all of those who had made a claim against the local authority and to explain the view of the Ayuntamiento. Another alternative would be to take court action, with all its risks and expenses, or to make the complaint against the Catastral Office. Property owners have until April 1013 to make a claim for repayment and the Ayuntamiento has prepared forms for this, which are available from Monday 8th October. These can be filled in online, but a special software programme is needed, or assistance can be sought from the Ayuntamiento Helpdesk. Mr Anton said it was estimated some 38,000 people could be demanding repayment. He said ‘Our lawyers were asked how people could recover their money, and they said the Catastral Office which is part of the State, should repay it. However, I cannot say whether this will be successful.’

Valencia/Alicante According to data released by the Department of Health around 130,000 throughout the Valencian region, including 60,300 people in the province of Alicante have lost their right to free health care. All of these people are recognised on the National Security Institute’s (INSS) databases and will be billed for treatment in Health Centres and Hospitals according to the Government’s agreed policy of a 771€ payment per year for those under 65 and 1,864€ for those over 65 for private health cover, although this will not cover the cost of drugs. Many of those excluded are foreigners without papers or people who have never worked in Spain but whose income exceeds 100,000€ per year. Worryingly, there are also many of them aged over 26 but unemployed, with no entitlement to benefits and with no independant resources. These figures far exceed the Health Department’s estimated 30,000 who it was predicted would be left outside government health care system.

Valencia

Pyrotechnician Vicente Albarranch has died in the Hospital La Fe in Valencia from burns he sustained during the disastrous Nit de l’Albá on 15th August, when rockets he was in the process of setting exploded prematurely. The 56-year-old was concerned that the consequences of his accident might affect the future of the traditional Nit de l’Albá. He suffered burns over 50% of his body, which became infected, and ultimately caused his death.

Cartagena and Espinardo,

The Consejería de Universidades, Empresa e Investigación, through the Dirección General de Industria, Energía y Minas, has announced a pilot project for electronic digital signature cards for Inspección Técnica de Vehículos (ITV) in the region. The aim is to improve safety and avoid manual errors in the inspection process. ‘This new system is much more modern and, above all, effective and responsive to both the inspection process itself and to immediate verification of the checks carried out by road safety officers.’ said the Consejero de Universidades, Empresa e Investigación, José Ballesta. The digital signature will be launched immediately in several ITV stations in the region, specifically in Cartagena and Espinardo, and initially used for regular inspections, but is expected soon to be used for other inspections, including pre-registration, reforms, service changes, among others. The new card will contain data on registration, number and date of inspection, expiry date, a security hologram for a stamp, insurance verification code (CVS), two-dimensional electronic signature insurance or QR code verification or both with the station number. The Minister stressed that this new system is to increase the quality and control of the ITV regional services as well as security and reliability, and combat the faking of certificates. He said that it costs nothing for the citizen and that this level of security is a pioneering procedure in Spain. It is expected that once the pilot phase has been successfully completed, the system will be implemented throughout the Region’s network of stations. The Region of Murcia has eight stations: Alcantarilla (carretera de Mula), Caravaca de la Cruz (Polígono Industrial Venta Cavila), Cartagena (Carretera de la Asomada), Espinardo (Avenida Juan Carlos I), Jumilla (Carretera comarcal 3314), Lorca (Polígono Industrial La Torrecilla), Molina de Segura (Polígono Industrial La Serreta) and San Pedro del Pinatar (Polígono Industrial Las Beatas).

Police debate putting video cameras in riot officers’ helmets The police are considering installing video cameras in riot officers’ helmets in order to record clashes with demonstrators so that there is a digital record of any aggression towards the police as well as the police reaction to it. As well as incorporating video cameras into the officers’ helmets, they are also considering other options like placing them on the lapels of officers’ uniforms or on police vehicles, from where a wider area could be covered and the images would be of a better quality because they would originate from a still camera. At the moment, the UIP (Unidad de Intervención Policial, or riot police) use hand-held video cameras to record

footage from demonstrations. One fo the main objectives of installing these cameras would be to clear up any doubts about the way police had behaved during clashes with the public, as well as to serve as a more effective way of identifying any violent or radical elements within the crowd. A police source said the move “would provide greater security for all concerned”. Cameras like the ones being considered are already in use in a number of other European countries and have been well-received by the police authorities, although the initial investment would be hard to find in the current climate of cutbacks. No budget allocation for this initiative has yet been approved.

Slippery Floors?

San Fulgencio

A denuncia, taken out by the two political parties in opposition to the PP and PIPN coalition in San Fulgencio was acted upon with great speed by the Alcalde, Carlos Ramirez. Local residents had complained about the rubbish being dumped on a large vacant plot in La Marina urbanisation, at the junction of Calle Alfredo Kraus and Camino del Convenio. Within 3 days Council workers arrived with front loaders, lorries and skips, loaded the waste and removed it post haste – to Calle del Bosque, a nearby green park area which is close to a number of houses in Calle Extramadura, Calle Asturias and the Marina del Mar urbanisation. The rubbish in question is mainly garden rubbish, but contains a substantial proportion of non-biodegradable materials. Opposition councillors from the APSFU and PSOE in San Fulgencio are accusing the Alcalde of a crime against the environment, serious ecological transgression, destroying an area of great natural beauty, contravening local and regional by-laws and transforming the area into an unlicensed and illegal dump site. They point to the pollution, infestations and disturbance to which the local residents will be exposed.

Mayor of Lorca hospitalised with stress

The mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jódar, was taken into hospital last Thursday evening suffering with stress. Although his condition is not serious, he has been ordered to stay on bed rest for several days. Deputy mayor, Francisco Montiel, has taken over command

for the time being and read a brief statement out this morning saying that Jódar had gone into hospital of his own accord after experiencing numerous physical symptoms over the course of the yesterday. According to Montiel, his colleague is being kept under observation, but “is OK and not in any danger, although he is waiting for the medical diagnosis which will be provided today by the hospital”. Montiel said it was “a consquence of the stress and intense work carried out by Jódar over the past months”. “All of us here have witnessed the pace the mayor has been working at, which has intensified over the past few days because of the events we are all familiar with and because of his total and absolute dedication to the town”, he added.

On behalf of the town council he asked for “maximum respect for the mayor’s privacy at this time and thanked people for their gestures of kindness and friendship”.

In just 16 months Lorca has been hit by two earthquakes that destroyed the town centre and the worst flooding ever recorded in the area. On Wednesday, Jódar, told the press today that an initial evaluation of the damage caused by Friday’s floods puts the cost at “well over” a hundred million euros. Jódar gave a summary of the goods and property damaged, destroyed or lost in the flash floods, including 300 homes

In the five days since flash floods hit the area, more than 200 tonnes of dead animals have been removed from the farms, a task which has been completed with speed to avoid “a sanitation problem”. “Now we are finding just the occasional animal as areas of intense flooding gradually dry out, or where mudslides have been cleared away” said the mayor. Around 10,000 hectares of arable land “are severely affected” especially in the areas where the rivers Béjar, Biznaga, Torrecilla and Nogalte converge. The most serious damage occurred in the villages of La Escucha, Altobordo y Campillo, which are being considered the “core” of the natural catastrophe. In terms of local infraestructures Jódar pointed out the 260 km of minor roads and dirt tracks that have been practically erased from the map - the equivalent of 20% of the town’s road network. Around 130 km of rural roads will have to “completely replaced”, whilst the other 50% will require “major repairs”, added the mayor. The town council has also been working to evaluate the losses and damage to ground-floor shops and offices in the centre of town and to warehouses on the town’s three industrial estates, which were visited by the mayor.

September 25th, when the child and his mother, both of Colombian origin, had been duped into travelling from Valencia to Barcelona, after being promised help with getting their immigration papers in order. On arrival in Barcelona, they were tricked into a car being driven by a young man and taken to an area of wasteland in Baix Llobregat. There, four armed men wearing balaclavas appeared, snatched the child and shoved him into the boot of another car, demanding 5,000,000 Euros in ransom money from the

mother if she wanted to see him again. The woman went straight to the police and the specialist kidnap and extortion unit quickly established a connection between the child’s father and the alleged leader of the gang, who had served time in a prison in Valencia at the same time as the child’s father and who had extracted details from him about the child and his mother in order to plan the kidnapping. Two days after the kidnapping, the child was found in a “holding

He was so heavily sedated, he had to be taken to hospital, where he was reunited with his mother. Also in the apartment, the police discoverd a detailed explanation of how the kidnapping should be carried out and written instructions to kill and quarter the child if anything went wrong or the kidnappers thought they were about to be discovered by the police. The Mossos arrested a 46year-old Spanish woman, Marta C.V., who was in charge of keeping the child hostage in the apartment, and then later on they arrested another Spaniard, 36-yearold Guillermo F.M., for his part in the kidnapping. The police operation is ongoing, and investigators believe they have identified at least one other gang member and have issued a warrant for his arrest.

Spain debt rises on aid to banks and regions

Spain’s debt level and borrowing needs are set to rise next year, piling pressure on the government to apply for international aid, as it pours funds in to cashstrapped regions and an ailing banking system, its budget showed on Saturday. Spain’s debt as a ratio of gross domestic product will reach 90.5 percent by end 2013, according to the document presented to Parliament for approval, almost three times that registered before the property bubble burst in 2008. The budget aims to make savings of around €13bn next year by cutting spending by the public ministries, education, health and infrastructure investments and freezing public workers’ wages. “This is an austerity budget, but will serve to help us get over this long economic crisis and once again show that Spain is a trustworthy partner within Europe,” Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro told journalists after delivering

Mummified corpse found on roof terrace in Córdoba

The body of a 50-year-old woman who disappeared in Córdoba in June has been found, in a “mummified” condition because of the extreme heat in recent months, on the roof terrace of a neighbouring block of flats. A police source confirmed that a resident in the block had alerted the police to a body on the roof terrace on Sunday, having initially mistaken it for a tailor’s dummy. Police officers were able to confirm that it was a corpse, with very dried out skin giving it a “mummified” appearance. There were no signs of violence on the body and next to it police found a handbag containing cash and a social security card, which is what enabled them to identify the corpse provisionally, before DNA tests were carried out. Access to the place where the body was found is particularly tricky, which is why residents had taken so long to come across it, and the height of the building meant that the smell was not noticed down below. Neverthless, Visitación Fabio, the neighbour who found the body on Sunday, told the press she had noticed a funny smell outside her window, which is close to the roof terrace, all summer, but thought nothing of it as persistent hot temperatures often make the drains smell. It appears that no-one had used the roof terrace during the summer until Visitación Fabio went up there to hang some washing out on Sunday. Residents have requested that the roof terrace be cleaned and sanitised by professionals to remove all traces of the human putrefaction. The missing woman’s family had distributed photos of her all over Córdoba in June in an attempt to find her. The police search covered the whole of Andalusia.

the budget. Spain is at the centre of the euro zone debt crisis as nervous investors demand ever higher premiums to hold Spanish debt on concerns the government cannot control its finances in the midst of a deepening recession. Calls by wealthy northeastern region Catalonia for independence and the rising number of demonstrations on the streets of major cities have fuelled doubts Spain can fix its problems without help. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has delayed any plea for aid, which would kick-start a European Central Bank plan to buy debt and ease financing costs, though this week has passed reforms and the budget plan in what many see is an effort to pre-empt the likely terms of a bailout. The budget details spending cuts of 3.1 percent in health, 14.4 percent in education and 6.3 percent in unemployment benefits, as the recession, which began in the first quarter, drags on. The government would also have to increase its reliance on international markets for funding next year, with gross debt issuance requirements of €207.2bn euros after budgeting in 2012 for gross issuance of €186.1bn. Spain faces debt redemptions worth €159.2bn in 2013, up slightly from €153.2bn in 2012, the document showed. The increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio was due to a greater debt on the back of the economic crisis and the effect of state instruments on public accounts, the Treasury said in the document. The instruments include the power deficit bond programme, FADE, the service provider fund for regional governments, Spain’s part in aid granted to Ireland,

Greece and Portugal and the recapitalisation loan for the country’s banks, it said. Brussels on Thursday said the budget was a large step in the right direction. But many economists expressed doubt that Spain’s conservatives would be able to raise the cash the budget demanded as pension and debtservicing costs rise. “My general view is that this is an optimistic budget, in the sense that predictions for the contraction in 2013 are very optimistic,” said Xavier Vives, economist at business school IESE, adding that he expected the plans to be revised as with every other budget over the last four years. Spain will meet its 2012 public deficit target as dictated by European guidelines, Montoro said, but the shortfall will jump by more than one percentage point if aid to its struggling banks were taken in to account. The Spanish deficit this year would be 6.3 percent of GDP, not including these payments to its banks, he said, but would rise to 9.4 percent of GDP last year and 7.4 percent of GDP this year if the aid was considered. “Everything within the deficit derived from financial operations aren’t included ... they’re considered oneoffs,” Montoro said. Spain has asked for up to €100bn for its crisis-hit banks, though the debate among Spain’s European partners rages over whether that money would go directly to its lenders or first via public coffers. On Friday, an independent report showed Spanish banks will need up to €59.3bn in extra capital to ride out the economic downturn. The budget details on Saturday showed Spain’s debt ratio included €30bn of the planned €100bn aid request for the country’s banks. (Source: Reuters)

Motorists’ association criticises unmarked accident black spots The European Motorists’ Association (Automovilistas Europeos Asociados AEA) has published a report in which it says it has identified 150 points on 60 different roads in Spain that it considers dangerous to road users. The report says only six of these have “accident black spot” warning signs and the Directorate General for Traffic (DGT) only has 14 fixed radars at these points, out of the 600 they have operative all over Spain. According to the motorists’ association, Spain’s roads still have “too many accident black spots” and it criticised recent cuts in the infrastructure budget, saying a systematic signage project needs to be undertaken to alert motorists to the dangers so that they can take the

appropriate precautions. Between 2006 and 2010 these 150 kilometres of road have claimed more than 2,000 victims. According to the AEA, the worst black spot is at km 415 on the N-630 in Béjar (Salamanca), followed by two in Castellón province - at km 59 and 60 on the N-234. Other notable black spots are in Albacete at km 594 on the N-430 and in Granada at km 173 on the N-323. With regard to dangerous stretches of road, two in Asturias (kms 56 and 57 on N-632) were highlighted, along with two in Salamanca (kms 418 and 407 on the N-630) and one in Cáceres (km 512 on the N-630). On the motorways, the most

dangerous stretches are in Pontevedra (km 12 on the A-55) and in Seville (km 75 on the N-630).

The AEA’s report concludes that the overall condition of road surfaces plays an important role in road safety in any country and claims that in around 47% of traffic accidents the general upkeep of the road is a contributory factor. The report recognises that the average danger index on Spain’s roads was four times lower in 2010 than in 2006-2010, but maintains this improvement is the result of improved infrastructures “and not the introduction of the points system, as others would have us believe”.

15,000 turn up for 150 jobs at Madrid’s John Deere factory

More than 15,000 of Madrid’s jobless queued to apply for 150 vacancies at the John Deere factory on the outskirts of the capital, the day before new data showed unemployment across Spain had soared by 11 per cent over the last year.

Sport

Overwhelmed by the huge response, the agency has said it will hold a draw of those who applied to narrow the list to 1,500 before considering suitable applicants for the positions. The government on Tuesday released figures that showed half a million people lost their jobs in the year ending September and that now 478,535 Spaniards are registered as unemployed. Spain’s official unemployment rate reached 24.63 per cent in June, the highest in the industrialised world and a survey by Spain’s workers union, UGT, revealed that close to a million people have been looking for work for at least two years. Mariano Rajoy, the prime minister, has denied that he will seek a eurozone bail-out this weekend, contrary to reports that Spain had signalled to European officials that it would be ready to make the request by October 8, when eurozone finance ministers are due to meet.

The applicants had no idea what positions they were applying for – except that it would mean employment at a factory of the agricultural machinery company – and they had not been told what wages to expect. But still they queued on Monday in the hope of securing regular employment as the nation mired in a deepening recession lurched towards a sovereign bail-out. “The truth is I have no idea what the job is, beyond that it is at a factory,” one 23-year old applicant who gave his name as Samuel, told Spanish daily newspaper El Pais. “I spent from 12.30 to 4pm in the line and I don’t care what the work is.” Employment agency Adecco in the Getafe district of Madrid, which advertised the job, said it had seen more than 15,000 applicants for the 150 positions in the week before the application closing date on Monday.

5,000 operations to combat morbid obesity carried out in Spain each year

The Institute of Obesity (IOB) has today published a report revealing that almost 5,000 operations to avoid morbid obesity are carried every year in Spain, the country with the third highest rate of obesity behind the USA and the UK. In its report, the IOB outlined how obesity and excess weight have, over the past decade, become one of the main concerns for modern society. Obesity is now the leading preventable cause of death worldwide and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. In Spain, roughly one in every five children 19% - are clinically obese, even more than in the USA (16%) and it has more cases of excess weight or obesity amongst minors than any other European country.

As a solution to this growing problem, the IOB recommends combining healthy eating habits - foods rich in fibre, fruit, vegetables, fish and white meat - with physical exercise. The report also pointed out that 60% of the adults in Spain lead sedentary lifestyles and that their last report on Health Risks on a Global Level (2009) listed a lack of physical activity as the fourth biggest cause of death. “Not doing enough exercise is damaging to one’s health, because the human body is designed to move, and when the different muscle systems are not used, our bodies atrophy and we fall ill”, the report warned. Nevertheless, in severe cases, the IOB offers a range of invasive techniques to control obesity, like the gastric balloon, the gastric band, tubular gastroplasty or gastric reefing.

Extra tugs brought in to refloat ships grounded off Valencia

A third tug boat has arrived in Valencia this morning to help refloat the BSLE Sunrise, one of two cargo ships left grounded off El Saler beach south of the city since Friday night’s storms. The operation to try to refloat the 113-metre-long ship is being coordinated by the Harbour Master in Valencia, with the assistance of the Marta Marta tug, that has come over this morning from Palma de Mallorca, the Punta Mayor and the Sar Mesanar. So far, the Punta Mayor and the Sar Mesana, which began the operation to refloat the BSLE Sunrise on Saturday morning, have managed to move the ship, which is grounded on a sandbank, about 45 metres and 90 degrees, getting it in line with the coastline. The Dutch company Svitzer, has been brought in to try to refloat the other stranded ship - the 118-metre-long Celia. Preliminary operations in this case have involved unloading the Celia and dredging the sand around her, with the aim of refloating her using the Med Fos tug boat that arrived on the scene on from Gibraltar on Monday afternoon. Both the Celia and the BSLE Sunrise ran aground on El Saler beach on the night of Friday September 28th beause of the 60-knot north-easterly winds and the heavy swell.

Liz Steward Counselling and Therapy Services

Individual Talking Therapy and Counselling Sessions

What are Talking Therapies?

Being able to share your thoughts and feelings that are having a negative effect on your life can, help you look at things in a different way. Talking to someone who is not connected to any of your worries or issues could help you explore, and explain, these thoughts and feelings in a way that you can understand. Speaking to a therapist who can recognise and see problems that you describe by talking about what is going on in your head, can help you see patterns that emerge when certain thoughts and feelings are explored. A therapist can help you work through negative thoughts and feelings help you understand where they come from and why you have them. Talking Therapies can help improve your self-image and confidence by helping you make positive changes through acting and thinking differently.

Why is there a stigma attached!

Many people feel that admitting you are seeing a therapist makes you a weak person! It takes a very strong person to admit that there is something wrong, it takes an even stronger person to do something about it. So, even when things seem at their lowest, you may feel that you have no control or power left, deciding to talk to someone independent is a start to reclaiming the control back into your life.

What are we dealing with? It is very difficult to be helpful in all situations; I have decided to concentrate mainly on mental health issues. I support people with the following issues.

Depression Low self-esteem Eating disorders Addiction to Alcohol Borderline Personality disorder Schizophrenia and Bipolar disorder

If you take medication for any mental health disorder and have stopped taking your medication due to the new charges in the farmacias, please, contact me, we will try and find support for you. Do not suffer with any Mental Health Issues, there is help here. Are you dependent on alcohol? Do you drink more than others? Are you living your life around your next drink? Over two hundred helped Age Concern celebrate at the Black and White Ball. The Balls really seem to have hit a chord with ex-pats. The weather always helps, the heat of aAugust is gone, but it is still lovely and warm. Pain is a feeling triggered in the ner vous system. It can be physiological, or psychological. Pain can be dull, it can be sharp. It can be acute it can be chronic. It can be short lived or last for ages. It can nag at you, stab at you, annoy you, cause you to ache, to feel nauseous, it can at times be debilitating. Fortunately, there are many ways to treat pain and treatment varies depending on the cause of pain. For example a lot of pain relief can be obtained by medications such as analgesics, and sometimes surger y is either helpful or

necessar y. Another way to treat pain is through the use of the mind. Consider chronic back pain for instance; chronic back pain can limit your ever yday activities and make it difficult to do ever y day mundane tasks or even to work This can cause unwanted feelings of frustration within you because you cannot do what you used to do; resentment because you resent others being able to do more than you can, and this ultimately, can lead to stress. These feelings and emotions can (and often do) aggravate or worsen your back pain. Why? Because of the mindbody relationship. They work together – they are inextricably linked. The way your mind controls your thoughts and attitudes influences the way your body controls your pain. Both the pain itself, and /or the fear of pain, can cause you to avoid both physical and social activities. Over time this leads to less physical strength and weaker social relationships. It can also cause more lack

of functioning and more pain. And so the cycle continues. This can lead to depression which is ver y common among people who have chronic back pain for instance. Continual pain can cause depression or make existing depression worse and not surprisingly, depression can also make any pain worse. Even mild depression can affect how well you can manage your pain and stay active. There is a that behind p h y s i o l o g problem there psychological or issue.

belief ever y i c a l is a cause

If you are in pain or think you may be depressed or if you are having a hard time controlling your emotions, it is best to get help sooner rather than later. If your pain is the result of an accident or emotional trauma, research has shown that some people are not able to fully deal with their pain until they deal with the emotional stress that their accident or trauma caused.

Look Good Feel Great

Animal owners warned they might be infecting pets with their germs zoonotic. ‘And, of course, there is concern about the health of the animals.’ So far there are only a handful of known cases of people spreading flu to their animals but this could be due to poor awareness of the phenomenon. Researchers at Oregon State University and Iowa State University are now working to find more cases of this type of disease transmission to better understand the risks to people and their pets. They said people with influenza-like illnesses should distance themselves from their pets. If a pet experiences respiratory disease or other illness following household exposure to someone with flu, they should take them to the vet for tests. The first recorded, probable case of fatal human-to-cat transmission of the pandemic H1N1 flu virus occurred in Oregon in 2009, Loehr said. Details were published in Veterinary Pathology, a professional journal. In that instance, a pet owner became severely ill with the flu and had to be hospitalized. While she was still in the hospital, her cat - an indoor cat with no exposure to other sick people, homes or wildlife - also died of pneumonia caused by an H1N1 infection. Since then, researchers have identified a total of 13 cats and one dog with

We don’t know for sure what the implications might be, but we do think this deserves more attention.’ Natural and experimental transmission of the H3N2 influenza virus from dogs to cats in South Korea showed the potential for flu viruses to be transmitted among various animal species, Prof Loehr said. It’s unknown if an infected cat or other pet could pass influenza back to humans. The primary concern in ‘reverse zoonosis,’ is that in any new movement of a virus from one species to another, the virus might mutate into a more virulent, harmful or easily transmissible form.

Pet owners have been warned next time they have the flu, they may not just pass it on to friends and family - they might also infect their animals. Thankfully, the chances are relatively slim, but US researchers said greater awareness was needed of the phenomenon, known as ‘reverse zoonosis.’ They added that people who experienced an influenza-like virus, should distance themselves from their animals. Around 80 to 100million households have a cat or dog in the U.S, with 20million domestic felines and pooches in the UK. It’s well known that new strains of influenza can evolve from animal populations such as pigs and birds and ultimately move into human populations, including the most recent influenza pandemic strain, H1N1. It’s less appreciated, experts say, that humans appear to have passed the H1N1 flu to cats and other animals, some of which have died of respiratory illness. Professor Chistiane Loehr, from Oregon State University, who is looking into the phenomenon, said: ‘We worry a lot about zoonoses, the transmission of diseases from animals to people. ‘But most people don’t realize that humans can also pass diseases to animals, and this raises questions and concerns about mutations, new viral forms and evolving diseases that may potentially be

Sunbeds ‘raise risk of ALL skin cancers’ especially among those who use device before age 25

Sunbeds raise the risk of non-melanoma skin cancers, particularly when people start using them before the age of 25, warn researchers. Although indoor tanning devices are already linked to the most deadly form of skin cancer, melanoma, a new study says they also trigger other damaging forms of the disease. Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) affects many thousands of Britons each year. They are triggered by sun damage and, although not usually fatal, may be disfiguring without treatment. The latest study shows sunbed users have a 67 per cent greater risk of developing squamous cell skin cancer and a 29 per cent higher risk of basal cell carcinoma compared with people who have never used indoor tanning. It found that exposure to sunbeds before the age of 25 was significantly linked with a higher risk of basal cell carcinoma. US researchers from the University of California in San Francisco led by Professor Eleni Linos analysed 12 studies involving 9,328 cases of non-melanoma skin cancer. They concluded that sunbed use accounts for 8.2 per cent of squamous cell skin cancers and 3.7 per cent of all basal cell carcinoma cases in the US. The study, published on bmj.com, says there is a ‘critical’ period in early life when the damage is initiated and that greater exposure leads to a higher chance of developing skin cancer. Prof Linos said the dramatic increase in the two most common human cancers in recent years has been dubbed an ‘epidemic’ but previous attempts to examine the link with indoor tanning devices has produced varied results. She said ‘Indoor tanning, which is already an established risk factor for malignant melanoma, is probably a risk factor for both squamous cell

carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, which are the most common human cancers. ‘Our findings add to the growing body of evidence on the harms of indoor tanning. ‘We hope that these findings can support public health campaigns and motivate increased regulation to reduce exposure to this carcinogen, especially during early life.’ More than 76,500 people are diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer in the UK each year, with 90 per cent caused by ultraviolet light exposure. It is estimated the actual figure could be at least 100,000 because NMSC is underreported as many people do not seek medical help. Lesions usually appear on the areas most exposed to the sun, such as the head, neck, ears, and back of the hands. As well as raising the risk of skin cancer, UV rays are known to increase the rate of ageing, leading to lines and wrinkles. Researchers from the Population Health Department in Australia, in an accompanying editorial, said young people in particular should be made aware of the dangers of sunbed use. ‘The known risks of skin cancer from indoor tanning currently outweigh its potential benefits’ they said. ‘Many countries have enacted legislation to tighten regulations on the sunbed industry during the past decade. A total ban is in place in Brazil, and legislation prohibits use by people under 18 years in France; Spain; Portugal; Germany; Austria; Belgium; the United Kingdom; and parts of Australia, Canada, and the United States. ‘These regulations must be tethered to warnings by health professionals and educators about the risks of indoor tanning. awareness, as well as sunburn incidence and other factors. ‘What the study fails to mention is that basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are called cancers because of their appearance under the microscope, not in the way they behave. They are skin lesions and functionally benign, ie they do not spread from the skin and kill. ‘Responsible use of a sunbed is a reliable source of obtaining UVB to obtain and maintain vitamin D levels. Vitamin D levels are low in nearly all European countries, including the UK, and experts believe increasing vitamin D status would be the most cost effective method to improve health across Europe.’

In a discovery that sounds uncannily like the plot of an Indiana Jones film, researchers have discovered that a 1,000 year old buddhist statue found by a Nazi expedition in 1938 is made from a meteorite.

The findings, published in the journal Meteoritics and Planetary Science, reveal the priceless statue to be a rare ataxite class of meteorite. The statue, known as the Iron Man, weighs 10kg and is around 24cm tall. THE IRON MAN The statue is is believed to represent a stylistic hybrid between the Buddhist and pre-Buddhist Bon culture that portrays the god Vaisravana, the Buddhist King of the North, also known as Jambhala in Tibet.

‘The statue was chiseled from a fragment of the Chinga meteorite which crashed into the border areas between Mongolia and Siberia about 15,000 years ago,’ said Dr Elmar Buchner from Stuttgart University, who made the discovery. ‘While the first debris was officially discovered in 1913 by gold prospectors, we believe that this individual meteorite fragment was collected many centuries

before.’ The team was able to classify it as an ataxite, a rare class of iron meteorite with high contents of nickel. The largest-ever known meteorite, the Hoba meteorite of Namibia, is an ataxite meteorite that may weigh more than 60 tons. The statue, known as the Iron Man, weighs 10kg and is believed to represent a stylistic hybrid between the Buddhist and pre-Buddhist Bon culture that portrays the god Vaisravana, the Buddhist King of the North, also known as Jambhala in Tibet. It was discovered in 1938 by an expedition of German scientists led by renowned zoologist Ernst Schäfer. The expedition was supported by Nazi SS Chief Heinrich Himmler and the entire expeditionary team were believed to have been SS members. Schäfer would later claim that he accepted SS support to advance his scientific research into the wildlife and anthropology of Tibet. However, historians believe Himmler’s support may have been based on his belief that the origins of the Aryan race could be found in Tibet. It is unknown how the statue was discovered, but it is believed that the large swastika carved into the centre of the figure may have encouraged the team to take it back to Germany. Once it arrived in Munich it became part of a private collection and only became

Día Día de de lala Hispanidad Hispanidad && Christopher Christopher Columbus Columbus The Spanish celebrate Día de la Hispanidad (Columbus Day) on 12 October every year. Why? Firstly,Christopher Columbus was not Spanish - he was an Italian born in Genoa. Secondly, he is credited with discovering America so we can blame him for the proliferation of fast food outlets like

McDonalds. Thirdly, most of the time he did not know where he was - he thought he was in the Orient when, in fact, he was in Central America. Seriously, though, Christopher Columbus was a famous explorer who, convinced that the World was round when most thought it was flat, persuaded Ferdinand and Isabella to sponsor him on his voyages to the New World. Of course, he did not know it was the New World at the time - he thought that travelling in a westerly direction

he would arrive in India. He did not bargain for the small matter that the continental masses of the Americas were in the way! Columbus embarked on his first voyage from Palos de la Frontera near Huelva on 3 August 1492 in the Santa María. On 12 October he reached San Salvador island in the Bahamas - hence the celebration date. On further trips he discovered Dominica, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Trinidad and the east coast of Central America including Honduras and Panama. He had spent several years as a mariner in the Portuguese marine. However, he yearned for more status and wished to accumulate riches for his family. He also believed that China and India could be reached by sailing in a westerly direction. Columbus sought sponsorship for his aims and, after a number of rejections, he finally obtained royal support from Spain - King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to bankroll his first voyage in January 1492. He made four voyages and we know now that he did not reach India but, instead, discovered America - or part of it! It is widely believed that he was the first European to sail across the Atlantic Ocean and to set foot on the American continent. He discovered most of the islands of the Caribbean as well as countries in Central America including Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela. He established a base in Hispaniola - an island now divided into Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Christopher Columbus died in 1506 at Valladolid but his bones were taken to Hispaniola - to the Cathedral of Santo Domingo that is now in the Dominican Republic.

THE GOVERNMENT IS CREATING AMAZING INCENTIVES TO PURCHASE PROPERTY, BUT ONLY PROFESSIONAL INVESTORS ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE: Q. I understand that the government has created incentives to try and get people to purchase properties. Can you explain them? A: This is correct. The government, in it’s desperation to get the property market moving and to try and help the builders and banks sell their properties, has legislated fantastic incentives, but up to now only professional real estate investors seem to be taking advantage. There are two particular incentives out there at this moment that are fantastic if combined with well-priced property. 1. New properties, which up to now where subject to V.A.T at 8% will only, pay 4% up to the end of this year. After that V.A.T. on new properties will be 10%.This does not affect second hand property, which is still subject to transfer tax of 8%. 2. Any urban property (villas, houses, flats, garages) purchased from now until the end of this year will have a special treatment when eventually sold. Whatever capital gains tax rate is applicable when it’s sold will be halved. You are entitled to use both these incentives combined: The conclusion: Buy a new build property before the end of this year and you will save 4% on your purchase (6% if you compare to the rate that will be applicable from the 1st of January of 2013), and half of your capital gains tax when you sell. BE CAREFUL: The first exemption is only on new properties, subject to V.A.T (not on second hand ones subject to transfer tax), and the second exemption does not apply to rustic properties (farmhouses etc). D uring the last month we have received the question below over twenty times so hear goes the reply: Q. If I am non-resident and do not rent out my property, do I really have to pay non-resident income tax? A. Yes. If you are non-resident and own a property in Spain you have to file a nonresident hypothetical income tax return every year. It is obligatory, and if you are not doing so you must start. If you wish to receive a full explanation about this tax, please email me and I will send you the full article published previously. Spanish property prices down more than 50% since peak claims new study

Based on a sample of transaction prices in Spanish cities including Barcelona, Madrid, Malaga, Seville and Valencia, the study found that house prices have fallen 53pc since the end of 2006, from 1,633€/m2 compared to 3,500€/ m2. On an annualised basis house prices are down 20.73pc over 12 months to end of June. José García-Montalvo, the professor in charge of the study, points out that the research is based on real transaction prices, not valuations or estimates like other data. “They are prices from the front line, real prices based on actual sales made,” he said. I suspect these figures are closer to the truth than any of the house price figures published by the Government, National Institute of Statistics, or appraisal companies, which all base their figures on valuations done by people who don’t know the real market price. For example, the latest data published by the Notaries would have us believe that house prices have declined just 26.8pc since the peak in late 2007, giving up just the last couple of years of gains made at the tail end of the boom. Thousands Take To The Streets In Protest Against Austerity Budget

Sport

Thousands of people took to the streets of Spain today to protest against the economic measures being adopted by the government and specifically against the latest budgets to be released, which have been described by unions as “anti-social”. Over 150 different groups across the country (including the CCOO and CGT unions) called for the mass demonstration and according to the organisers over 72,000 people turned out in Madrid alone, although the police put the figure at only 5,000. Many of the organisers were calling for a public vote on the proposed cutbacks, claiming that the Cabinet was too “scared” to ask the people as they know they no longer have the support of the majority. The march through Madrid was mirrorred in another 56 cities acriss Spain. In Castilla y León, thousands of people marched through the eight provincial capitals, to protest at the government cutbacks, and repeated calls for a general strike in November were heard. In Murcia some 5,000 people, many of them families with their children, took to the streets to

protest, whilsti in Zaragoza hundreds of banners could be seen criticising the cuts and accusing Rajoy’s government of “leaving the youth with no future”. In Vitoria and Bilbao, hundreds of people marched through the centre of the city calling for a general strike in protest at the budget cuts. Demonstrations were banned in Pontevedra and Ourense (Galicia) because they were deemed to clash with electoral campaigns for the upcoming regional elections. At the end of the protest march in Gijón, a manifesto was read out accusing the government of a “lack of transparency” and a “cover-up”. In Barcelona, 1,500 people according to the police and 20,000, according to the organisers, demonstrated against the government’s austerity measures, and in Valencia’s Plaza de la Virgen there was another demonstration against the government’s policies, in particular with regard to young people. Banners saying “Jobless youth, futureless society” could be seen across the city. In Alicante, around 500 people gathered in

the central Plaza Montañeta, supported by the region’s main trade unions and leading social reform groups, calling for a referendum on the government’s policies. Protest marches were repeated in all the provincial capitals in Andalusia, with 4,000 taking to the streets in Seville; 10,000 in Granada; 10,000 in Málaga; 3,000 in Almería and 2,500 in Jaén. The Balearic and Canary Islands saw similar protests during the course of the day, with noisy pressure on the government to review its austerity measures. The leaders of the CC OO and UGT trade unions, Ignacio Fernández Toxo and Cándido Méndez, respectively, said they believed the 2013 budgets would only cause “greater recession and greater unemployment” and made renewed calls for a general strikes. They urged the government to hold a referendum on the topic of cutbacks before the situation became “explosive and unmanageable”.

Merkel Pledges Support For Greece In Athens Visit

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged her country’s continuing support to Greece, during her first visit to Athens since the eurozone crisis erupted nearly three years ago. Mrs Merkel said Greece had made good progress in dealing with its vast debt but that it was a “difficult path”. Thousands of people who blame Germany for forcing painful austerity measures on Greece are protesting in Athens. Police have fired teargas towards some stone-throwing demonstrators. Correspondents say this highly symbolic visit is a show of support for Greece’s continued

membership of the eurozone. It comes as Greece prepares to pass new cuts of 13bn euros (£10.5bn; $17bn) to qualify for more bailout cash, a policy that has sparked growing unrest. While Germany has contributed the most money to the bailout, BBC Europe editor Gavin Hewitt says its chancellor is held responsible by many for demanding that Greece make swingeing cuts in exchange for the financing it has received. Mrs Merkel was met by Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on arrival in Athens. At a news conference with Mr Samaras, Mrs Merkel acknowledged that there were “many people suffering in Greece”

as a result of the financial crisis and austerity measures. But she said the country had “a good bit of the path behind you” and that progress was being made “on a daily basis”. Mr Samaras said Mrs Merkel’s visit was a “token of proof” in the progress Greece has made. He said Greece would stick to its reform pledges and eventually be “a European success” - Europe would emerge stronger and more united from the financial crisis, he said. The capital is said to be carrying out its biggest security operation in a decade, with some 7,000 police on duty. Protests have been banned for the day in much of central Athens,

However, outside the lockdown zone, thousands of people gathered, some carrying banners with slogans such as “No to the Fourth Reich”. A three-hour strike was also called for the early afternoon. The crowds have largely been peaceful, though some protesters threw bottles, masonry and rocks torwards police lines. Police fired teargas when one group attempted to break through a barrier to reach parliament buildings.

2.2 million children living below the poverty line in Spain

The Spanish branch of Unicef estimates that 2,267,000 children were living below the poverty line in Spain last year, 80,000 more than in 2010. The charity sets the child poverty rate at 27.2% compared to the 26.2% quoted in the Eurostat report on the impact of the recession on children in Spain, which was published in May. “The new figure confirms the trend outlines by Eurostat in its report, which warned that the very young had become the age group most affected by poverty in our country”, UNICEF warns. The charity also pointed out that there are now over 760,000 households with children where no adult

works, 46,000 more than last year. In addition, there are 14.4% of children living in households with a high poverty rate, up from 13.7% last year.

This tatistical update, said Unicef, is “particularly important” at a time when the parliamentary proceedings for the General State Budget for 2013 were just beginning. In this regard, the Executive Director of UNICEF Spain, Paloma Escudero says that now “more than ever we must pay attention to the most vulnerable, who are unfairly affected by the crisis. It’s imperative the consequences for children are analysed, before

any measures are take.”

The austerity measures taken in recent years, coupled with the ones currently being proposed directly affect crucial items for children in Spain, such as social services, education or health, she says. She underlined the importance of analysing the impact on children of all measures taken, in the context of the crisis, and of putting into place a national plan against child poverty. Finally, she suggested that Parliament should follow the commitment made in the draft law passed last June, giving priority to issues affecting children.

As the days get shorter and colder, it’s time to pack away those lighter layers and bring out your winter woollies. But how do you avoid dust and moths ruining your lovely summer stuff? Follow our simple three-step guide to storing everything away neatly and safely.

Step 1 - Declutter • Be ruthless – the less you have, the easier it is to store. Go through everything in your wardrobe and sort into three piles: things you want to store, things that need to be chucked and things that you’ll wear through the winter. • Increase wardrobe space, and help others, by donating anything you didn’t wear this summer to your local charity shop. • Alternatively, sell unwanted clothes on eBay or on the car boot! It’s a great way to recoup some of your loss from ‘mistake’ purchases.

Step 2 – Clean Up • Clean your summer shoes and repair clothes before packing them away. • Have your delicates dry-cleaned and make sure other items are washed and dried before you pack them away for the winter – moths love dirty clothes!!! • If your favourite black items have faded to grey, purchase a dye from Mercadona – great value and great results in the washing machine!

Step 3 – Store it ! • Protect hanging garments with dry cleaning covers or cotton protectors – both available in Mercadona and the ‘60c’ shops across the area. Protect special pieces with full length cotton bags as they allow the air to circulate. • Save space by vacuum-packing your clothes and keep them protected from damp, dust and moths – again these are available in shops across the region. • Protect clothes in drawers with anti-moth sachets containing cedarwood and lavender. www.lakeland.co.uk do a great range of products at really great prices! • Use underbed lidded storage boxes. These offer great protection for all of your items and are out of the way too!

Eurozone rescue fund launch due

The eurozone’s new permanent fund to bail out struggling economies and banks will be launched later at a meeting of finance ministers.

The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) will have a full lending capacity of 500bn euros (£400bn; $650bn) by 2014. It will initially run alongside, and then eventually replace, the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF). Europe’s largest economy Germany will make the biggest contribution to the fund, about 27% of its total.

Finance ministers from the eurozone are meeting in Luxembourg to officially launch it, with countries making their first payments towards the fund this week. The EU economic and monetary affairs commissioner, Olli Rehn, said the inauguration and start of operations of the ESM was a “very important milestone”. “It provides the eurozone with a robust and permanent firewall and it provides us with a strong toolbox of effective

and flexible instruments,” Mr Rehn said as he arrived for the meeting. “Thinking of where we were two and a half years ago when we had no instruments of crisis management, we had to create the Greek loan facility and the temporary European facility, we are moving forward and we are supplementing the economic and monetary union with one important building block. “Nobody is in party mood but I am less pessimistic for the moment for the eurozone than in the spring.” The ESM’s inauguration comes amid growing uncertainty over Greece’s bailout and anticipation that Spain will also seek financial aid, although Madrid has so far denied that a bailout request is imminent. Spain has already been granted help for its banks, and will receive up to 100bn euros to be targeted at its financial sector. The temporary EFSF has already lent 190bn euros to Greece, the Republic of Ireland and Portugal.

Some critics believe that the 500bn-euro firepower of the ESM will still not be large enough to save the eurozone. “The good news is that by using the funding in a wise way to support bond purchases you can probably stretch that money quite a long way,” Sarah Hewin, head of global research at Standard Chartered, told the BBC. “The real concern is if Italy becomes involved, if there’s a big shock to the system and a full bailout is required. Even 500bn euros isn’t enough to cover Spain and Italy for a full three-year programme.”

David Cameron ‘would veto’ EU budget FOR GREAT autumn ADVERTISING RATES CALL 950 121 936

Prime Minister David Cameron has said he would veto a new European Union budget “if necessary”. The EU is beginning negotiations on its next budget for 2014 to 2020. Mr Cameron also told the BBC that in the longer term the EU should have two different budgets - one for countries in the eurozone and one for those outside the single currency. Last year Mr Cameron vetoed an EU-wide treaty to coordinate budget policies and impose penalties on rulebreakers. Speaking on the first day of the Conservative Party conference, Mr Cameron said experience showed that “people in Europe know I mean what I say”. “I sat round that table - 27 countries, 26 of them signing up to a treaty and I said, ‘This is not in Britain’s interests, I don’t care how much pressure you put on, I’m not signing, we’re not having it. They know I’m capable of saying no and if I don’t get a good deal I’ll say no again.” He said he would block talks if “massive increases” in the budget were proposed or if a deal that “does not have

proper control” was put forward.

The prime minister said the EU budget was a “classic example of where we should probably start to draw new lines”.

“There will come a time I believe where you’re going to need to have two European budgets - one for the single currency, because they’re going to have to support each other much more, and perhaps a wider budget for everybody else.” He added that he did not think this would be achieved this time but it was an indicator of the way Europe is going. Mr Cameron also said he favoured a referendum on a renegotiated role for Britain in the EU but once again ruled out holding a simple Yes or No vote on Britain’s membership. “The fact is, I think most people in our country don’t actually want to leave the European Union or just accept how it is at the moment. They want to change it.”

week 1

By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info See Community News It’s finally here again and it looks just as exciting as ever. 14 more celebrities looking to lift that glitter ball trophy for series 10. Who will it be?? With no eliminations this week the couples were either dancing Waltz or Cha Cha Cha and then the other dance next week with a cumulative total from the judges and a dance off from the 2 lowest rated couples. Opening the Friday show were Fern Britten (TV presenter) & Artem and a Cha Cha Cha. She does have a long way to go but had quite a nice foot and leg action but for a stronger look it needed to be attacked a little more however Ferns performance was confident and cheeky. I awarded her a 4 and the judges a total of 19. Next to take the floor were Nicky Byrne (westlife) & Karen (this years new professional) performing a Waltz. I expected more from Nicky, his posture was like an old man with his bottom sticking out and his neck poked forward and instead of moving across the floor he was bobbing up and down on the spot. Nicky will have an awful lot of work to do, let’s hope his latin is stronger! The judges gave him a 17 and I gave him a 3. Next to take to the floor were cricketer Michael Vaughan and Natalie dancing a Waltz. Michael had a nice line and looks good for ballroom his back was a little stiff and his weight a little too far back but not a bad first attempt. I awarded him a 5 and a total of 20 from the judges. Following were Victoria Pendleton and her parner Brendan who danced a Cha Cha

Cha. She has great potential and had quite complex choreography for her first week but unfortunately her nerves got the better of her and she had a train crash, she went wrong near the beginning of the routine and couldn’t recover. What a shame, if she can overcome the nerves she will be a force to be reckoned with. I awarded her a 3 and the judges gave her 16. The fifth couple were Colin Salmon (actor) and Kristina with a Cha Cha Cha performed with great attitude. He has great rhythm and presentation even if a little flat footed, looking forward to seeing his Waltz next week. Judges awarded him 23 and I gave him a 6. Closing the Friday show were Denise Van Outen (west end performer) and James with a Waltz which had great characterisation. She was a little shaky when dancing solo with her posture too far forward, but much better once in hold. This was excellent for week one and she has to be of of the front runners for this year. I gave her a 7 and she received a total of 25 from the judges. The Saturday show was opened by Kimberley Walsh (of Girls Aloud) and Pasha demonstrating a Cha Cha Cha. This was an excellent start to the show and she will definitely be one to watch. She had quite good feet and legs which will be improved by slightly more attack but a super first performance. I awarded her a 7 and a total of 28 from the judges. Next to take to the floor were Sid Owen (Ricky Butcher from Eastenders) who danced a Waltz. He certainly looked the

part and had a great affinity with the music and his partner. He is a little stiff in the back at the moment but otherwise the posture was good. I look forward to see if his latin is as good next week. I gave him a 6 and he received 26 from the judges. Next onto the floor were Johnny Ball (former childrens TV presenter) with his partner Iveta (a replacement for Aliona who had to pull out after fracturing her ankle in rehearsal!) I know that he is by far the oldest member of this years celebrities but oh dear! I think the only connection was between his mouth and his hips, whichever way his hips went his mouth followed and it put me off sorry Johnny! However his timing was quite good. I awarded him 2 and the judges a total of 17. Next to the floor were Dani Harmer (Tracy Beaker) and her partner Vincent dancing a Waltz. I loved Dani’s nickname for Vincent papa smurf!! She had great posture except for tucking her chin in but when turning solo was a bit unsteady which was caused by a weak core. If she can correct this and strengthen, she again will be a strong contender. I gave her a 5 with the judges 21. The following couple were Lisa Riley (Emmerdale’s Mandy Dingle) and Robin performing a Cha Cha Cha. I was really surprised by her, she was full of fun and energy, with a good Cha Cha action and very rhythmic. I thoroughly enjoyed her performance and awarded her a 7 and with a total of 30 from the judges their favourite

for this week. Next to the floor were Richard Arnold (TV presenter) with Erin and a Waltz. He had quite a good top line although a bit flat footed but his pivot turns looked like he had one leg longer than the other due to him dropping his weight back, otherwise a commendable performance. The judges gave him a 22 and I gave him a 4. Next to dance were Jerry Hall (model) with Anton performing a Cha Cha Cha. I have little to say of this performance as she spent more time standing doing model poses than actually dancing so I gave her a 3 and the judges a total of 18. Closing the show were gymnast Lewis Smith with Flavia and a Cha Cha Cha. This was promising but for me, somehow didn’t quite deliver, he has great flexibility and great rhythm but I think it was the shape of his drainpipe trousers which detracted from his performance as his legs are yet weak. However I think he will also be a strong performer. I awarded him a 5 and the judges 27. Next week the celebrities swap dances from the Waltz to Cha Cha Cha or vice versa so we will be able to see this years possible contenders as they have to be able to dance both styles to have any chance of lifting the glitter ball. I’ve outlined a few possible contenders but do you agree with me? Do you have a favourite? More next week. Don’t forget that you can come and join our classes for all the tips and latest gossip from the show!!

I wish to clear up any misunderstandings or misinterpretations that may have arisen out of a recent incident in Albox. All was not as it may have appeared to be, and hasty conclusions should not be jumped to! The incident in question took place on the corner adjacent to Mercadona, a spot that is described as having a ‘high footfall.’ I think that means that a lot of people walk along there, rather than the wearing of high heels is obligatory, or that a John Cleese silly walk has to be adopted. It occurred at mid-morning, a time of day when both the night owls and the skylarks among us are up and about, therefore there were many eyewitnesses even though there was nothing surreptitious, no cloak-and-dagger behaviour, and the sun was shining down on the righteous as well as the rest of mankind. It involved 4 ladies, all of impeccable pedigree, with blameless backgrounds and unimpeachable moral standards, and as honest as Midsummer’s Day. This I know for a fact as I was one of the four. So what was going on? Did I imagine it, or did some people cross the road as they reached us, or was it simply that we were standing right by the pedestrian crossing? Why were we the object of suspicious glances? Why did passing car drivers slow down and peer inquisitively in our direction? What did they hope to see? Or were they simply wondering whether we were going to use the crossing? Here is what happened: We 4, josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk Beryl, Tina, Lynette

and myself were gathered in a tight huddle on the corner in question. We each had our purses out, money was changing hands, and we were engaged in animated conversation. What was going on? Could it have been that us four worthy citizens were engaged in subterfuge? Was a plot being hatched, plans being laid? Or were we dividing the stash from a successful heist? Surely such obviously worthy ladies as we are could not have been engaged in anything less than honest? But perhaps, as in Arsenic and Old Lace, a master criminal gang was hiding behind our 4 innocents fronts? Were we in fact the masterminds behind a new criminal cartel, ready to take over organised crime in the Almanzora Valley? No, we were merely trying to change a 50€ to something a bit more manageable with which to pay for our Spanish lesson. So, I’m sorry to disappoint, but there is no truth in the rumour that a new criminal cartel has been formed in Albox!

Books . . . The Great Levellers. . .

A friend was scanning my fairly extensive collection of books at the house recently and he asked me - if I had to pick my favourite book of all time, which one would it be. Well there is no doubt in my mind that it would have to be the Charles Dickens classic – A Christmas Carol. This is a book that I was introduced to one Christmas many years ago as a very young boy and one that I have read– usually at Christmas time - on numerous occasions since. Strictly speaking it is a novella - longer than a novelette and shorter than a novel - but however you categorize it, for me it is the greatest story ever told in the English language. Dickens’s descriptions of the hard hearted Scrooge; the degradations of the Victorian working classes and the plight of the sick as portrayed in the character of Tiny Tim; still fascinates and moves me. But the eventual redemption of its main character and his transformation into a champion of the Christmas spirit and benefactor of the less fortunate, always leaves me uplifted, smiling and at peace with the world. This book has just about

everything – pathos, humour, tragedy and even a hint of bondage, with poor old dead Jacob Marley wrapped up in chains for all eternity. The story has a unique way of encapsulating the true meaning of Christmas but in a secular way. It is in short, a literary treasure. In his forward, Dickens himself says: “I have endeavoured in this ghostly little book, to raise the ghost of an idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me”. There is however another book that invariably raises goose bumps on my extremities and has my stomach groaning with nostalgia and the longing for another time and another place. The book in question is ‘In Search of England’ by H.V.Morton. It’s no secret that I am a fervent – even obsessive - Anglophile through and through, and Morton’s book first published in 1927 is a vivid description of bucolic landscapes; hidden villages, earthy characters and an England teetering on the edge of major changes brought about by the devastating effects of the Great War- the war to end all wars. I wonder how Morton would view his country today with its motorways; supermarkets; tattooed hordes; cosmopolitan population and millionaire footballers. It’s a long way

from the England of the twenties in many respects, although miraculously, most of the locations and landmarks featured in his book are instantly recognisable today and have changed very little - only superficially at most. It is a book that I once described as the one I would choose to take with me if the BBC were forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel and invite me as a guest on Desert Island Discs. One book that never did make the best seller lists as far as I know, and coincidentally was published on this very day (October 10th) 1881, bore the catchy title: ‘The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms with Notes on their Habits’. Sort of rolls effortlessly off the tongue doesn’t it. Could this be where the term Book Worm comes from? The author of this tome was none other than Charles Darwin, who regarded this must-have addition to everybody’s book collection, as his major work. Blimey – the title alone has me reaching for my razor. Not that a Braun Series 7 with ActiveLift™ middle trimmer, the unique OptiFoil™ and a contour adaptive shaving head, would do much damage . . . Unless I swallow it. Books are marvellous things. They are a precious commodity and up until a few years ago, I had never willingly given away or sold any hardback that came into By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com my possession. But

tough decisions had to be made as our move to Spain drew closer and for the first time I was forced to find good homes for a hundred or so volumes. It was like saying goodbye to old friends. You see, to me they are not merely items to read once and discard, but they progress to become additions to shelves, cabinets and display cases, sometimes to be read again and again. Their poor cousins the humble paperbacks however, are a different matter and I recycle them as soon as they are read. But we are all different and some people never pick up a book. I was talking to my best friend – the irrepressible Douglas - about this very thing recently and he told me: “I read a book once . . . It had a green cover, I used it to level the TV table and it worked very well.”

¡ Vi v a l a R e p u b l i c a ! With its expulsion from Spain, Alqueria needed an executive structure. A show of hands would determine the form of government and its officials. The high powered inertia of the Alquerian people meant that only one in eight of the population bothered to turn out. The debate over the form of government saw a contest between a monarchy, suggested by Rodriquez and a republic. Rodriguez’s model involved him being absolute dictator with his family as rightful heirs and therefore successors. Rodriquez’s family were well qualified in the Monarchic stakes as they were already thoroughly interbred. This form of government, he argued would alleviate the necessity for time wasting elections in the future. The people of the village may not be the most astute of folk, but they saw through this one and properly went for the alternative. The Republic of Alqueria duly came into existence. Rodriquez and Antonio Poyato became joint presidents. This was necessary to avoid civil unrest between the barrios. Cartera Tomás became the Minister of Finance. Within an hour of him taking up his post his Greek counterpart phoned requesting a loan. Tomás agreed and insisted the Parthenon was used as security. He sent a cheque for 2bn Raros, the new currency of Alqueria to Athens. This was approximately equal to 2.50 Euros. The Parthenon was dismantled and duly shipped. It is piled to the east of the Río Verde, one gigantic construction kit. The Greek Government has since built a papier-mâché replica on the Acropolis. No one seems to have noticed the difference. The sympathy vote went once again to the town’s resident Englishman Blythe Gruntmore who was made the Minister of Sport. His first task was to write to the International Athletics Association to arrange for Olympic status for the Alquerian over 80s pole vaulting team. Unfortunately he filled in the wrong forms and inadvertently joined NATO. They requested an aircraft carrier, two frigates and a squadron of stealth bombers for peace keeping duties. Blythe went into hiding. Manuela became the Minister of Culture. Her cultural activities were imaginative as much as they were exhausting. The cultural exchanges between Alqueria and certain Scandinavian countries proved extremely popular. Nation after nation queued to recognise the fledgling Republic. Some were however under the mistaken belief that Alqueria was an oil rich North African state. A misconception that the Alquerian establishment were slow to correct. There were many red faces in foreign ministries across the world when the truth was known. Not a potentially lucrative ally but a village of eight hundred misfits and malcontents whose only exports were Remitroot Liquor and an inferior olive oil. As newspapers across the western world carried the details of Alqueria’s story its people began their isolation. Forced back upon their own resources they stood defiantly behind the barricades.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2012

Anything Goes, The Variety Campo Verde Theatre Group

Through the hot summer months Campo Verde Theatre Group have been working hard to learn new songs, dances and sketches for their next production, “Anything Goes, The Variety”. The group who meet Monday and Wednesday afternoons at the Community Centre, Blue Lagoon, have endured the sweltering heat to rehearse for their October show. The dedicated group have attended rehearsals at the Community Centre during July and August, dancing, singing and acting even though there has been no water or air conditioning in the building! The title of the show is apt, as members have proved that Anything does Go in order to get the show on the road. The members have also enjoyed some valuable leisure time together, enjoying an evening of Mini Golf followed by a meal,

then on Saturday 22nd September they sang and danced their way through the streets of San Miguel when they entered the parade during the Fiesta in the town. They will also soon be taking part in Pilar de Horadada annual Fiesta in October. The members of the group try to enjoy regular social events in addition to their rehearsals and performances, which all add to the friendly and welcoming nature of this well established theatre group. Their next show “Anything Goes, The Variety” will be an evening of music, dance and laughter and will be performed at the Casa de Cultura at San Miguel de Salinas on Friday 26th, Saturday 27th and Sunday 26th October. The show promises to be a colourful, fun production, with songs that will make you want to tap your feet! Tickets cost 8€ and can be obtained from Colin on 966 774 127 or Tom on 966 700 876.

B Clean Gardening Group

Now that the cooler weather is with us B Clean Gardening Group is back to work. Last Tuesday we cleared some of the mud and gravel that had washed onto the roads after the torrential rain we all suffered. Their are many jobs that need our attention following the downpour, some areas that need improving and new projects to start this Autumn. We are in urgent need of more people to help on a Tuesday morning, to continue with our attempts to make B Sector a better place for us all to live. If you can spare an hour or two we would be most grateful for your help. Please contact Helen or Sandy on 968199506 / 968986030.

We have a GREEN WASTE BIN next to the Cultural Centre and we would appreciate that if you have green waste to dispose of that you ONLY place it in the bin and NOT by the side if it is full as the contractors will not remove it. It is not the responsibility of B Clean Gardening Group or Residents who live by the Centre to clean up the rubbish you have left behind. If the bin is full please either take it to the ECO PARK or take it back home until the bin is emptied and returned. B Clean Gardening Groups aims are to improve the environment in which we all live. The more people that cooperate the easier the task will be. PLEASE HELP US TO ACHIEVE THESE GOALS!

Ingredients Method 450 fresh mussels, cleaned Discard any mussels that are broken or that don’t close when tapped. Heat the sesame oil in a large pan and stir in the laksa paste. Cook, stirring, over 15ml sesame oil a medium heat for 2min, then pour in the coconut milk and 200ml (7fl oz) water. 30 mls Laksa Paste Simmer gently for 10min. 400ml can coconut milk Stir in the rice noodles, spring onions and the lime zest and juice. Season to taste, 125g fine rice noodles then bring back to a slow simmer. Add the mussels and prawns to the pan; cook for 6 spring onions, shredded 3-5min until the prawns have turned pink and the mussels are open. Discard any Zest and juice of 1 lime mussels that remain closed. 24 raw organic tiger prawns, peeled and de-veined Stir in half the mint and basil. Serve the laksa in deep 1 small bunch fresh mint and fresh basil, finely bowls with the remaining herbs and nuts sprinkled on top. shredded 50g roasted peanuts, finely chopped

In a bowl, add beef, then sesame oil, soy sauce, sherry, sugar and cornflour. Mix well and leave to marinate for 1520 mins. Heat vegetable oil in a wok till hot, then add beef. You may need to do this in batches so as not to overcrowd the pan - you want the beef to fast-fry, not steam. Cook for 2-3 mins, till well coloured, then remove and leave to one side. Cook noodles as per pack instructions, drain and leave to one side. Now add celery to pan and fry quickly for 2 mins. Throw in garlic and stir well, then add mushrooms. Continue to fry till mushrooms begin to colour, and add a little stock. Bring to boil and bubble for 2 mins, so sauce thickens and reduces slightly, return beef to pan, then gradually add remaining stock. Add noodles to pan, stir and cook till warmed through. Serve immediately, garnished with chopped red chilli and coriander.

can you give a dog a home?

These guy are Prince and Duke, Prince has a white flash on his chest.

Prince is a Labrador cross of about 13 months. He was left tied to the gates of the MARA compound. When found he was in excellent condition and well fed and most likely a result of the crisis in Spain where is owners found that they could not continue to look after him. He is a very loving boy who loves to be cuddles and he just want to play. He loves his toys and he cried so much when we leave him for the night. Duke is a Labrador of around 15 months another one left ties to our gates about 3 months ago, Duke is another great boy who loves to play and be loved.

Forget the ‘like’ button…

Facebook is now testing a ‘want’ button for products that will pave the way for website to enter e-commerce market The Facebook ‘like’ has now become the easiest way to show our approval of what our friend ate for lunch or the fluffiness of their pet cat. Now, a new ‘want’ button will allow users to announce their desire for a new wardrobe or expensive lingerie at the click of a button. The social networking firm is testing a feature that lets people create ‘wishlists’ of home furnishings, clothing and other items, as part of what could become a move into e-commerce.

The ultimate brain workout How reading Jane Austen can exercise parts of the brain usually associated with touch and movement

Reading Jane Austen novels closely activates the areas of the brain more commonly associated with movement and touch, U.S. researchers say. The findings surprised neuroscientists who expected to see changes in regions of the brain which regulate attention as the main differences between casual and focused reading. But the results of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans looked as they would if readers were physically placing themselves within the story as they analysed it. Natalie Phillips, professor of 18th Century Literature and Culture at Michigan State University, who led the study, told NPR’s Shots blog: ‘What’s been taking us by surprise in our early data analysis is how much the whole brain — global activations across a number of different regions — seems to be transforming and shifting between the pleasure and the close reading.’ Professor Phillips inspiration for the study came from observing distractability in herself and others. Distractability is also a theme which runs through Jane Austen’s novels, whom she admires. She wondered if modern cognitive theories could help explain the character development of Pride and Prejudice’s Elizabeth Bennett, one of Austen’s most famous heroines. Professor Phillips believes that Elizabeth’s distractability was the key to Austen’s characterisation of her lively mind, with Austen drawing on contemporary cognitive theories to inform her development. To test her theory, Phillips decided to conduct a study looking at how reading affects the brain. She asked volunteers to lie in an fMRI brain scanner and read Austen. Test subjects were asked to read in two ways: sometimes they were asked to casually browse the text, as they might do in a bookshop; other times they were asked to delve deep, as a scholar might study a text. As volunteers read, Professor Phillips and her team scanned their brains while simultaneously tracking their eye movements, breathing and heart rate. At the end of the session, each volunteer was asked to write a short essay based on their reading Neuroscientists told Professor Phillips there would be few differences in brain function between casual reading and intense reading. She admitted she mainly expected to see differences in parts of the brains regulating attention. She told NPR: ‘Everyone told me to expect these really, really minute and subtle effects because everyone was going to be the same thing, right? Reading Jane Austen. And they were just going to be doing it in two different ways.’ Unexpectedly they found, however, that close reading activated parts of the brain usually more involved in movement and touch - as though readers were physically placing themselves in the story. The research fits into a new interdisciplinary field sometimes called literary neuroscience. Others are looking at how poetry and rhythm affect the brain, how metaphors excite sensory regions. Their research hopes to reveal a more complete picture of the mysteries of human cognition and is an important crossing point between the arts and the sciences. For Professor Phillips, it represents an interesting and surreal new direction in her career as a literary academic. ‘If you asked me on a top 10 list of things that I did not expect to find myself doing as an 18th centuryist when I first started this study on the history of distraction, I would say laying on my back in an MRI scanner trying to figure out how to position paragraphs by Jane Austen so that you wouldn’t have to turn your head while reading with a mirror,’ she said.

share things they are interested in with their friends. People can click through and buy these items off of Facebook.’ A spokeswoman said the company will not receive a fee when someone purchases a Facebook wishlist item from a retailer’s site. Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said the new Collections feature could open up new sources of revenue for Facebook, whose stock has taken a drubbing as concerns about its long-term money-making prospects have mounted.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, it is currently working with seven retailers, including Pottery Barn and Victoria’s Secret, and will encourage users to buy products through the site or send them directly to the online stores.

‘E-commerce is one of the best ways to monetise the Internet,’ he said.

The ‘Collections’ feature is also being trialled with Neiman Marcus, Michael Kors, Smith Optics, Wayfair and Fab.com.

Retailers might also pay Facebook to promote products featured on users’ wishlists, Mr Sebastian suggested, in a similar technique used in the current ads function.

Soon, all US users will begin seeing messages and images from retailers suggesting they flag products using either a ‘want’ or a ‘collect’ button. Products you have clicked on will then appear in your Timeline - which is not how the current ‘like’ button works. Facebook said in a statement: ‘People will be able to engage with these collections and

‘Thinking about how large they are as a platform and how engaged people are, there are lots of levers they haven’t pulled yet in terms of monetisation.’

Shares of Facebook, finished on Monday down 2.4 per cent at $20.40, and earlier the same day, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield downgraded Facebook to a ‘Sell’ rating. In a note to investors, he cited concerns about the company’s advertising business, particularly Facebook’s efforts to expand the business on to mobile devices.

The free ‘gravity’ font that could make reading online easier for dyslexia sufferers It looks looks almost like a ‘melted’ page, but in fact this is the font that could help dyslexia sufferers read online. A free-to-use font created by Abelardo Gonzalez, it has a heavier bottom to give letters ‘gravity’ - making it less likely the brain will rotate them and confuse sufferers. The fonts are now available for mobile phones, and its creator hopes it will become commonplace online. “Your brain can sometimes do funny things to letters,’ said Abelardo (Abbie) Gonzalez, a New Hampshire-based mobile app designer, who released his designs onto the web at the end of last year. OpenDyslexic tries to help prevent some of these things from happening.’ ‘Letters have heavy weighted bottoms to add a kind of ‘gravity’ to each letter, helping to keep your brain from rotating them around in ways that can make them look like other letters. Consistently weighted bottoms can also help reinforce the line of text. The unique shapes of each letter can help prevent flipping and swapping.’ Although other, paid for, fonts exist, Gonzalez said he wanted to build a free version. ‘I had seen similar fonts, but at the time they were completely unaffordable and so impractical as far as costs go,” he told the BBC. Honeymoon scrapped to pay for dog’s op

A newlywed couple cancelled their dream £7,500 honeymoon in Las Vegas - to pay for an operation for their pet dog. Claire and Ceri Morgan were set to fly off on their luxury break when they discovered American bulldog Teeto had cancer. Mr Morgan, 36, a garage worker, from Morriston, South Wales, said: “We were looking forward to our dream honeymoon but Teeto had to come first. “He’s such a special dog, we had no hesitation. We had to use the money for his vets bills.” Since his diagnosis Teeto has had his right leg amputated to fight the cancer in his right shoulder. He has also undergone a course of chemotherapy but is now said to be doing

well. Mrs Morgan, 26, added: “We told the vet that it didn’t matter about the money, just do whatever it takes to make him better. “We can go on honeymoon again when we’ve saved up but a dog is for life and we want Teeto around for a lot longer.” The couple became concerned about Teeto last July when he began to walk with a limp. However, it wasn’t until they watched a TV programme where a dog with similar symptoms was diagnosed with cancer that everything fell into place. As well as forfeiting their honeymoon, the couple also travelled more than 80 miles from their home every three weeks for Teeto’s chemotherapy.

Student lands job as human scarecrow

A student who graduated university with a degree in Music and English has been given a job as a human scarecrow. Jamie Fox, 22, who recently graduated from Bangor University, will use a ukulele, accordion and cowbell to frighten partridges away from a field in Norfolk. He is being paid £250 a week to wear a bright orange coat and play the instruments in a ten acre field where birds are unpeturbed by ordinary scarecrows. His boss, Aylsham farmer William Youngs, even warned him to “bring a deckchair and a good book” for his days in the oilseed rape field. Mr Fox, who says his friends are “slightly envious” of his role, is now saving to pay for a trip to New Zealand next year. “I get to sit and read for a lot of the time but whenever I see the partridges, I have to get up and scare them off,” he commented. “I ring a cowbell and I’ve even played the accordion, but the ukulele doesn’t seem to have any effect on them.”

braben’s blog....

Isn’t it funny the things you do when you have time on your hands and nothing to fill it? First of all, I am fully in favour of having time on my hands with nothing pressing to do! Long may it continue. Recently I was in a position where my wife and daughter were away for a week whilst I was stuck in work finishing a few things off-the things that most needed finishing off were chocolate cakes, biscuits and the like-and to pass the time I immersed myself in interesting statistics; there’s two words you never expected to see in the same sentence-“interesting” and “statistics”! Do you know- quite frankly, there is no earthly reason why you would know this unless, like me, you have been ripped from the bosom of your family for a week and are looking round for things to fill your time- that in 1938 a U.S. Presidential Commission declared, with great confidence and no little amount of fanfaring, that the population of the country would NEVER reach 140 million? Note, that was never! Well, they were right, for 8 years, because by 1946 that figure had been reached. I mention this not to gloat that politicians had got something wrong-this seems to happen on a disturbingly regular basis- but simply to point out that, even though a study carries the name of the American President. we still have no reason on earth to believe that what they say is true. Indeed, why not have a study carried out by the Kardashians. They seem to have as much of a following as politicians, more so if you are to believe the opinion poll ratings of the U.K. Deputy Prime Minister-who, by the way is not a Kardashian. I am still not awfully sure what a Kardashian does or where they have come from, weren’t they something from Star Trek…or was that Klingons? But, in my random search through totally meaningless facts I have found a reality star in waiting-well he would be if he was still alive. Apparently Robert Todd, who was Abraham Lincoln’s eldest son, was present at the deaths of three American Presidents. Three! Now there’s series waiting to be made. I rest my case and am willing, just for you, to examine more statistics. What was that? Was that the sound of a newspaper being shredded? No… listen… really, it’s interesting! Honest!

REVIEW it... The Pram by Betty Woodcock

How would you feel if you had have been seduced by an aristocrat when you were sixteen and sent away to have an abortion, reminded of your shame and disgrace by a working class father? It happened, didn’t it? Second scenario. Many years later you are haunted by the baby you aborted as a foetus. Now how would you feel if this “baby” merges with an actual baby such as your grandchild and taunts you with “ YOU MURDERED ME!” Intriguing or just freaky? Carrie had to live with the shame and guilt all of her life but fortunately she married and had a legitimate daughter who is about to give birth at the beginning of the story. The pram, a simple purchase of an old-fashioned, over-sized, bulky but regal looking Victorian pram was meant as a special gift for a long-awaited grandchild. It doesn’t take the reader long before we realise there is something sinister about the pram and the appearance of a baby sleeping soundly in it before the arrival of the grandchild. Carrie’s “strange experience” is the beginning of a long nightmare and a disturbing journey where the mind degenerates into insanity just like the female in The Yellow Wallpaper. Almost from the beginning we are given glimpses of the occult that Woodcock wanted to explore in the novel. There are times when the novel is moving closely into the genre of horror but then Woodcock pulls us back into an illusion of domesticity. A dysfunctional family. “The baby had been an old-fashioned baby, like the pram. From the past. A ghost baby.” When the grandchild arrives Carrie sees two babies, one real the other an illusion perhaps? Then the impossible happens-they “merge” into one and for Carrie it has a destabilising effect and her mind becomes obsessed with psychiatrists, neurologists and such like. Her “rampant imagination” goes into “overdrive” and she concludes that getting rid of the pram will mean the demise of the ghost baby. Think again. A reincarnation. A baby who is telepathic. These are the delights of the author. “That weird changeling.” “I had never known such a single word could hold such menace.” Not the three words a parent wants to hear: I LOVE YOU. “You murdered me.” This dallying into the supernatural allows Carrie to see dead people which un-nerves her even more. Carrie is obsessed by the thought that the “changeling” is going to harm her by seeking revenge for its cruel and untimely death. Salvation is at hand in the form of a knight in shining armour, Gervaise, ironically the man who caused the trouble in the first place. Add a touch of romance and lots of black humour and hey presto you have an extremely interesting foray into the world of the occult. ISBN: 978-147-009-1668

La Marina Golf Society Captains Day

On Thursday we 31 players arrived at El Plantio to play one of our most important games of the year. Captains day. Despite the major renovations on the course everyone enjoyed the day. Our handicap secretary Barry just arriving back from a very successful few weeks golfing in the UK was brought back to earth with a bump, losing 6 balls in his round. We started off the day with a shotgun start on the par three nine hole course then back to the Clubhouse for a welcome coffee and sandwich. After an hour or so we tackled the 18 hole Course. Some with better fortune than others. The fairways were poor and the greens were patchy but when the work is finished i am sure the course will be back to its normal pristine condition. After the game it was back to the sports complex for a lovely meal and Presentation of prizes.

Results are as follows Par three course nearest the pin hole 7 Steve Warner Overall best score with 33 points Ray Thorpe (guest) Main course nearest the pins Hole 7 Carol Marriner Hole 9 Brian Stewart Hole 14 Alan Craig Hole 18 Steve Warner Longest drive Steve Warner, best guest Ray Thorpe Third place Pete Hutchinson Second place Alan Craig First place Steve Warner mystery prize Brian Stewart for being the biggest bandit. Then we adjourned to the bar. If you would like to join La Marina Golf Society or play with us as a guest just ring bill on 679007756 you will be made most welcome. Our next game is at Bonalba on the 18th Oct. Tee off 10am.

Our monthly society game this month saw us playing at Alto Real , the course had took a battering with the recent bad weather also it was recovering from the necessary yearly hollow tining , but the greens staff must have worked very hard to keep the course up to scratch and considering that they had everything against them the course was still very enjoyable with the fairways and greens in good condition . Alto Real has always been a favourite of ours with the staff being very friendly and the green fees very competitive , also a very good test of golf with course management being essential to acquire a decent score , but with this in mind three of our players did break par and their scores have been noted by our handicap secretary Alan Gifford who no doubt will be adjusting any handicaps deemed necessary . Over the past months we

have attracted many new members all who have joined us on the recommendation of present members so I would like to welcome them all to Busters , at this meeting our best guest (now a Member) was John West with a score of 30 points , our nearest the pins were won by , hole 5 Mike Kelly , hole 8 Steve Edwards , hole 10 Alan Gifford and hole 17 Bill Peters , all received a sleeve of 3 Srixon golf balls , we had two scores of 37 points from Bill Fantom and John Fullicks with John Fullicks taking second place by means of a lower handicap , our winner this month with an excellent score of 39 points was Colin Edwards , our two winners both received cash prizes . Our next meeting which will be held at La Peraleja will take place on the 2nd of November . Barry Grinsell

MAGGOTS END.................................. RODS AND REELS After the rain of the weekend, finding somewhere to fish was not easy. Rivers looked like they had all of Willy Wonker´s chocolate factory goods colouring them. The venue decided on was the drain by Mercadona near La Marina. Although, being colourful and with some pace on it, this seemed the best option. The weights were certainly not brilliant but all anglers caught. Fishing had to be done right under the far bank and the amount of rubbish was unbelievable that close to the bank. It certainly is a good way to trash plenty of rigs.!!!!! Top rods on the day 1st Ian ( The Irish Wizard ) Dalzell fishing the pole using maggot with 5.38 kilo´s. 2nd Terry ( Swing E´m ) Screen fishing the pole using maggot with 3.20 kilo´s. 3rd Dave ( Yours Truly ) Hoare fishing the pole using maggot with 2.98 kilo´s. After the first 3 matches the standings are as follows Dave Hoare with 7 points Clive Cleghorn with 10 points Terry Screen / Ian Dalzell with 12 points PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present, if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 966729293 or 603535771. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen This weeks 7th round match of the Winter Series was moved from Murcia due to the bad weather and with most of the other venues being flooded, we decided to try out the Mercadona Stretch. This had also been flooded and by the look of the water level marks on the bushes it had receded around 2 feet and also ran off 6inches whilst we were fishing. This is a notorious hard water

to fish with weights rarely exceeding 5kgs, a few people hooked and lost big fish in the reeds. There are a lot of 2 to 4 inch fish in this stretch of water, which made up most of the weights they have also diverted the left hand channel into this length while they are working on it. 1st Lennie (Ex cultural attaché) Bolton with 2.740kg fishing the pole and using maggot 2nd Terry (Swing em) Screen with 2.680kg fishing the pole and using maggot 3rd Don (Mr Bowls) Whitney with 2.340kg also fishing the pole and using maggot I would also like to thank the Abbey Angling Team for their effort in winning the Inter Club 2011/2012 Gary Smith Challenge Trophy. Our next Club Meeting is at the Abbey Tavern on the 15th October 2012 at 7.30pm and all members are welcome All details are available on our website www. abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965328368 ANGLERS TOGETHER The objective of Anglers Together has been reached ( which was to introduce anglers to each other ). Now that newcomers to Spain are few and far between, we have decided that monthly meetings are serving no useful purpose and the friendships that have been made over the past 4 years are now firmly established. We will continue to provide information through our email address if contacted but there will be no membership renewals in May. Thanks to all past members for their support. NUESTRO ABARAN CF 2 MAZARRON FC 1

For the second away game running, Mazarron were involved in a controversial game and once again lost out by the odd goal despite doing more than enough to run out comfortable winners. This time it was the performance of the match officials and not the ground facilities that was the problem. Over the years, Mazarron have been on the receiving end of some inexplicable decisions by referees but this weekend’s game capped the lot. The fun started as early as the fourth minute when an excellent tackle by Alfonso, who made the mistake of winning the ball, was penalised about 30 yards from goal. The Abaran free kick was hit straight tamely into the hands of goalkeeper Jose Iker who dropped the ball straight at the feet of Carrasco and he tapped the ball home to give Abaran the lead. Just a minute later, Serrano thought he had equalised for Mazarron when he slotted home only to find that the referee had brought back play to award a free kick to Mazarron, It was the only time in the game that the referee decided not to play the advantage rule. After 15 minutes Jose Ruben ran onto a superb through ball and with five Abaran defenders trailing behind him, and with no other Mazarron forwards in support, hit a superb low drive into the far corner of the net for the equaliser. Mazarron had dominated the

first half but after 44 minutes a breakaway by Abaran saw Gomez, who seemed to be in an offside position, slotting the ball past Iker to restore Abaran’s lead. The second half saw Mazarron dominate further and after 60 minutes Miguelon forced the ball over the line after Rubens’ excellent cross. Inexplicably, the linesman failed to flag for a goal and, when the inevitably protests followed, Jose Rueben and Miguelon were booked. The referee had now completely lost control of the game and further bookings soon followed, an Abaran player was sent off after 80 minutes following two yellow cards and Mazarron’s Pepe Pollo, who had only been on the pitch for about 10 minutes as a substitute, was also dismissed for two yellow cards. Mazarron’s coach, Antonio Lorente, was then dismissed, apparently for standing too near the touchline and despite more pressure from Mazarron who also had a couple of possible penalty appeals turned down, the game ended in a third consecutive defeat. Team: Jose Iker, Barrachina, Diego (1), Pepelu, Urrea (Panocha), Alfonso, Cris (Pollo), Santi, Edu 2 (Miguelon), Jose Rube, Serrano Man of the Match: Santi

CORNISH PRIDE (LOS DOLSES).... Ten Pin Bowling League Matches played on October 2nd SPLIT HAPPENS continued their good start, and moved to the top of the league with another win, this time a 6-2 victory against LOS LOBOS. Top scorer for S.H. was Marion Haynes, with a 635 hcp series, and for L.L. it was Terry Smith with a 616 hcp series. In a very close match BANDOLEROS fought out a 4-4 draw with SPLASH, both the team captains were the top scorers in the match, Juan Vidal for Bandoleros with a 580 hcp series, and Diego Munoz for Splash with a 560 hcp series. In the ‘Finish’ battle, last years runners up, TEAM FINLAND came out on top with a 5-3 win against CABALLO NEGRO. Top scorer on the lanes was Olli Leppanen bowling for T.F. with a 205 scratch game and 586 scratch series. A new bowler to the league, bowling for MIXERS, is the manageress of Ozone bowl, Maria Jesus, but unfortunately she could not stop her team

losing 6-2 to LOS BANDIDOS.

L.B. were inspired by a 246 scratch game from their Barry Tolson. CRAZY PINZ made it 3 defeats in a row, as they were easily beaten 8-0 by HALL y DAY, the leagues top male bowler on the night, bowling for H & D was Bob Day, who bowled the seasons highest scratch scores so far, a 262 game and a 624 series. CARP-R-US picked up their first points of the season, with a 6-2 win over BAR MOSQUITOS, top bowler in that match was Bill Hogg, with a 642 hcp series. CORNISH PRIDE, the leagues sponsors team, are still unbeaten after a 4-4 draw against LUCKY STRIKE, the top scorer in that match was Paul Johnson, bowling for C.P. with a 606 hcp series. Finally a big thank you from all the league bowlers to Ruth & Bernard, owners of Mosquitos bar and restaurante, in Torreta II who have agreed to sponsor the leagues xmas ‘turkey’ competition this year.

SAM MIGUEL G.S. at VILLAMARTIN

facilitate the desired tee times for the regular club members off tee one, so for San Miguel Golf Society - Villamartin is synonymous with early mornings for the next couple of months. The heavy dew put pay to virtually any run on the fairways and the damp semi-rough added a few more degrees of difficulty to any rescue shots, that’s IF you could find the ball which had a nasty habit of always nestling down. On the plus side though was the generous positioning of the yellow tee markers which were well in front of their usual slots which does make a noticeable difference on this course….as the scores

clearly showed. NTP prizes went to Geoff Giddy, Marg Birtwistle, Jackie Rust and Glen Rapley and in the Stableford competition the top 3 visitors were Tom Evans (38), Scotty Phillips (35) & brother, Geoff Phillips (34). Silver division was won AGAIN by Mark Busson with 38 points followed by Jackie Rust with 36 and Keith Wraithmell (35). Another regular winner, Phil de Lacy, took the gold category with an obscene 43 points which was followed in by a pair of 39’s. The count-back soon showed it was Colin Rust in 2nd place & Geoff Giddy in 3rd. Coming in with a not too bad score of 28, I’m sure the last thing on Ian Parkinson’s mind was being presented with the special “Abacus” award for the lowest score – still, Ian, you could drown your sorrows with the very pleasant bottle of wine! Full details of the forthcoming Wednesday meetings are available from Barry on 966 731 033 or by visiting www.smgs.org, visitors are always made very welcome.

to be classed as GUR due to the heavy rainfalls of late. The prizes were once again derived from very generous donations of Society Captain, Alan Rickers who donated 2nd and 3rd places in both categories and NTP prizes of bottles of wine were donated by Michael Fearneough who even had the audacity to win a bottle back. Thank you to you both, these generous donations enable to coffers to grow. The results on the day were a little on the low side considering the good condition of the course, but then again, Alenda isn’t a piece of cake and we only had one member who broke Par. That was local member and Society Secretary Alan Rixson who showed his local knowledge and came in with 37 points to secure victory in the Gold Division. Not too far behind on 35 was

Chris Hamblett with Theo Boelhouwer taking 3rd spot with 34 points. The Silver Division was won by Ray Ewins on 33 points and in 2nd and 3rd places came two of our esteemed Lady members where June Leonard claimed 2nd place with 30 points and edged out Sheila Dean on 27 points to secure 3rd spot. Our next match is at Roda on Wednesday 11th October 2012 and we welcome players of all standards and gender to come along and join in. If you fancy a knock around at Roda with us, please check out our website at www. tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966 719 604. Some of the SMGS winners at Villamartin. After the searing heat of the recent summer months it was a welcome change to experience that slight autumnal chill in the early morning air as we arrived in the semi-darkness for our early tee times at Villamartin. In the wake of the tremendous weekend excitement of the Ryder Cup we had a few players doing a “Rory” on us and turning up with only a few minutes to spare but, to be fair, they did ALL eventually arrive and with a nifty bit of juggling we didn’t lose any time. Now that we are in October, we tee off on the tenth early in the morning in order to

The Members Golf Society.........................................

Match report for Alenda Golf, 3rd October 2012 24 members arrived at the Alenda Golf course to take part in Stableford event and how pleasing it was to actually play in a heat that was very comfortable and I think we all hope that the unbearable heat has left us for another year. They also found the course to be in excellent condition and I’ve never seen so many smiles on golfers faces when they learned that all bunkers were

BY STEVE HIBBERD The first ever play off between respective champions of SABA and NABA, was played last week at Monte Mar. Greenland Gladiators representing the South, took on a strong looking Northern based Javea Emeralds, for the right of ‘Champions of Alicante’ crown. Winning

on 4, drawing on 1, and only narrowly losing on the other rink, gave our Gladiators a very satisfying 9 (134) points to 3 (84) victory. Well done: Helen Langlios, Hilda Cork, Ted Upham 18-16 Ronnie Cairns, Terry Lawton, Derek Toozer 20-12 Ian Kenyon, Colin Lloyd, Lynne Greenland 20-20

Captain Jeannie Clements sends her appreciation to Arthur & Barbara Brown for all their hard work in organizing the event, and to Jean ‘2 hats’ Cooper for not only umpiring the match, but for then presenting the trophy as president of the CBBA. She would also like to offer many thanks to all Gladiators players, Vice Captain Hilda Cork and selectors, for all their support throughout the season.

Thanks from GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB REPORT BY STEVE HIBBERD Pictured are Bill Pain and Lynne Greenland, Greenlands Bowls Club, with a hamper donated by Jumerca (Gama) in Dona Pepa. They would like to thank everyone who helped them with fund raising for their forthcoming trip to Adelaide, Australia, to represent Spain in the World Bowls Championship. In particular Greenlands Bowls Club members, Quesada Mini Golf and the Jumerca supermarket. The hamper was first prize in a raffle later that day. Good luck to them both.”
