local NEWS UPDATE...... Lorca/Puerto Lumbreras

Technicians and councillors from the Ayuntamiento of Lorca conducted an aerial survey and declared the areas of La Torrecilla, El Campillo, Purias, Cazalla y Aguaderas, the urban area of Lorca, the area south of La Estación-El Esparragal and Puerto Lumbreras as a huge pool of water full of dead livestock, flooded farms and submerged crops. Thousands of litres of water poured from the ramblas of Nogalte and Béjar, pooling in the rambla de Biznaga. 31 fire tenders from the Consorcio de Extinción de Incendios and the Protección Civil, as well as 14 fork lifts and 20 lorries were mobilised to remove flotsam that was impeding the flow of wáter from Biznaga into the Guadalentín. Rapid response was necessary to prevent the spread of disease from the large number of animal carcasses floating in the flood water. The Servicio de Sanidad Animal de la Consejería de Agricultura y Agua called on farmers to lend machinery to assist in the clear-up, and also wherever posible for the carcasses to be taken to roadside collection points for speedy removal by a fleet of trucks supplied by Grasas Martínez, a company specialising in the treatment of animal cadavers. In Puerto Lumbreras a network for the supply of drinking water consisting of 7,000 metres of hosepipe was put in place. The Consistory lumbrerense established this facility in record time in response to a warning from the Consejería de Agricultura that livestock will die unless provided with water within a maximum of 70 to 72 hours. The Concejal de Agricultura, Desarrollo Rural, Obras y Servicios de Lorca, Ángel Ramón Meca, said that more than 11,000 hectares of crops, more than 300 homes and more than 200 farms had been destroyed by the ‘rage’ water. The Mayor of Lorca, Francisco Jódar, convened the irrigation, agricultural and livestock cooperatives, and called for volunteers to support the recovery efforts of the flooded areas. Call lines have been made available: 968 44 46 43 for helpers with flood relief. For Puerto Lumbreras only: 968 40 20 13 or 652 90 22 96. For La Estación-El Esparraga: 968 48 34 90.

Puerto Lumbreras

The death toll rose to 8 with the death of a German lady, Hieltrue Gill, known locally as ‘Gertrude’. Hours of searching including the use of a helicopter from the Dirección General de Emergencia in the Rambla de Nogalte, La Estación-El Esparragal, Purias and the Autovía de Águilas. were ended by a call by a cyclist, Antonio Gabarrón, Her Ford Mondeo Ranchero was found by a cyclist on the Rambla de Los Casarejos. It was buried in debris under an almond tree and completely destroyed after being dragged from the Restaurante Las Macetas into the Rambla by the strength of the flood water. Apparently the woman, about 70 years, was returning from the market by the N342, and was crossing by the Restaurante Las Macetas when the deluge swept the car

away. Her husband, Axel, attended the scene, visibly shaken. The same fate is presumed to have happened to a further 2 people, one a British lady from Vera (Almería), and another in Valle del Guadalhorce (Malaga). More than 11,000 hectares in Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras have been affected by water. In Lorca more than 300 homes and more than 200 farms have been affected. In Puerto Lumbreras the figures are not yet available, but are thought to be even worse, with countless animals drowned.

La Estación-El Esparragal.

A tale of tragedy and heroism from Cuatro Caminos, La Estación-El Esparragal. Fa’rroudi Mustapha, a 36 year old Moroccan, was going for his lunch break from his work at La Torrecilla ,where he worked on the farm of Antonio Guerrero when he heard the terrified cries of Marcos, 10, the grandson of Miguel Asensio, and brother of Jessica, age 7, both of whom were overcome by the floods and died. Mustapha said ‘I was heading home for lunch when I heard a child was screaming. I saw an image to which no one could stay unmoved: The boy was clutching the guardrail of the road. He was screaming ‘Help me please, my grandfather is lost! I can not swim.’ I could not just leave the little boy, so I took a wire from my van and managed to catch the child from the roundabout.’ They were then trapped on the roundabout amid the unbridled fury of the water. ‘We were alone on the roundabout until a tractor brought us out of there. Otherwise we would not have come out alive from there.’ Mustapha, who is afraid of water, recalled the event to his wife, Chibani Sinam, and his 2 year old son, Adam. ‘They were the first people I thought about after the tractor rescued us.’ Marco’s sister, Jessica, was heroically rescued by Juan Asensio, but the two were swept away and drowned.

Lorca/Puerto Lumbreras

The Ministerio de Fomento has reopened the A7 highway between Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras after a temporary road has been established. ‘The workers have been working day and night to enable a road as important as this to open to traffic as soon as possible.’ said the Delegado del Gobierno in Murcia, Joaquín Bascuñana, who nevertheless urged caution by drivers in the area. Work on the A7 will take at least two months, due to ‘you have to demolish everything and then build,’ said the Delegate. Thanks to work by the Servicio de Conservación de Carreteras the D-7 ((Lorca to Los Valencianos), D-11 (Lorca to the Estación de Puerto Lumbreras), D-17 (Puerto Lumbreras to Almendricos), D-19 (Puerto Lumbreras to RM-11) and D-26 (Estación Puerto Lumbreras to the RM-620) are open with care. Also are also open RM-620 (Purias to Pulpí) and RM-11 (Lorca-Águilas) Tertiary roads D-10 (La Almenara- Lorca ) and D-12 (Lorca to Estación de Puerto Lumbreras), RM-621 (Lorca to Purias)will open as soon as possible, as will RM517,between Cehegín and Caravaca de la Cruz, and the RM-C-20, between Mula and Camino del Curtis.

A Spanish man has drowned in a failed attempt to rescue a nine-year-old girl who became trapped inside a car during flash flooding in southeastern Spain, a local official said Sunday. The girl was travelling with her grandfather and 11-year-old brother when their vehicle was caught in rapidly rising flood waters on Friday near the town of Puerto Lambreras, an official with the town hall said. A 60-year-old man - identified by Spanish media as Juan Asensio - tried to rescue the girl but he was swept away by the flood waters and died, he added. The girl and her grandfather also drowned but the 11-year-old boy survived, reportedly by holding on to a lamppost. “Three people died. We are still not sure how the boy managed to survive,” said the official with the town hall of Puerto Lambreras

who asked not to be named in line with the municipality’s policy. Residents walk by a wrecked car carried away by flash floods in the town of Villanueva del Rosario, southern Spain. Picture: AP Ten people in total have died in Spain in the regions of Andalusia and Murcia due to flash flooding brought on by downpours. The heavy rains have also damaged homes, caused the collapse of two bridges and forced roads to close. Hundreds of people - municipal officials and volunteers - worked on Sunday to sweep streets of mud and debris in both regions. “This is a disaster, an authentic disaster,” 75-year-old Antonio Lopez told the online edition of local newspaper La Verdad as he watched the cleanup operation near his home in Puerto Lumbreras.

Murcia authorities haul away 200 tonnes of drowned livestock

Some 200 tonnes of dead animals were removed from farms in and around Lorca and Puerto Lumbreras this weekend, all of them drowned in the torrential rain that fell on Friday. Experts with the regional Animal Health and Safety departament working in tandem with the local authorities, worked all weekend in the areas worst hit by Friday’s flash floods, specifically in the villages of El Campillo, Purías, El Esparragal and Puerto Lumbreras, hauling away the livestock corpses and evaluating the damage.

The work was carried out according to which areas were accessible and which farmers had requested assistance. Farmers were asked to place the animal corpses close to roads, wherever possible, so that they could be easily removed by the authorities to be treated in specialist facilities. Most of the dead animals are sheep, although cows, pigs, goats and chickens are known to have perished in the floods. Seven farms in Lorca who have lost all their livestock.

Cartagena Carthaginians and Romans gave a brief lesson in ancient history at the foot of the Muralla de Carlos III, converted for a few hours in the fortification of Quart Hadast de Aníbal. The traditional battle between the Carthaginians and Romans was postponed by rain, though the outcome remained the same! ‘Every year the Romans beat us!’ summarized two Carthaginians in Calle Lagueneta, Camino del Lago, when asked by a spectator who claimed to be from outside Cartagena. In an hour long show Carthaginians and Romans represented a spectacular clash between the legions of the Roman General Publio Cornelio Escipión, who besieged the city of Quart Hadast under the leadership of Magón. Viewers were treated to a show of catapults, arrows and pyrotechnics by foot and mounted soldiers in the Cuesta del Batel. Speeches by Cayo Lelio, Magón and Escipión were answered with applause from the grandstands area. The top of the wall and the top of the hill Despeñaperros –where it is said that the Templo Vulcano was situated were crowded with spectators. The show, which symbolises the birth of Cartagena, ended with the firing of mortars and a grand victory parade through the streets.

La Gineta, Fortuna A group of residents from Urbanization Delia II and III, La Gineta have sent several letters to the Ayuntamiento of Fortuna, complaining about the state of the hamlet. Specifically, a large dead dog was left to putrefy a few yards from homes and a playground. The residents were also unhappy about street paving, garbage collection, the rubbish in adjoining park and reduction in the number of speed bumps and traffic signals. The Pedáneo de La Gineta, Juan Ginés García, said ‘We are not aware of these deficiencies. If they are not reported they can not be addressed.’

Orihuela The Bishop of the diocese of Orihuela-Alicante, Rafael Palmero, has acted in the matter of the actions of an elderly man who sprayed red paint over 15 wall plaques on the wall of the Basilica in Aspe. The plaques commemorate Nationalists who died during the Spanish Civil War. The 79 year old man maintained that the Nationalist symbols were illegal. In a ‘friendly and constructive’ meeting between councillors, the Bishop and the families of the deceased it was agreed that the plaques would be removed to an alternative site.

SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2012

Government reveals latest round of austerity measures The Government revealed its latest round of austerity measures with today’s announcement of budget changes for 2013. Pensions have escaped the Prime Minister’s scythe, but taxes are on the up again and there will be new structural reforms to try to combat the shrinking economy and increasing unemployment. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaría called it “a crisis budget designed to exit the crisis”, focusing more on spending cuts than tax rises. Oppostioin leader Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba was “sceptical” about what he described as an “antisocial” budget. Ministries will be expected to reduce spending by 12% on average and public sector salaries have been frozen for the third year in a row. A new independent authority is to be set up to monitor government finances. The only areas where spending will be allowed to increase in 2013 will be pensions, student scholarships and interest payments on debt. The individual pension increase of 1% will be funded by drawing on three billion euros of reserves. There will be a new 20% tax on lottery wins above 2,500 euros and a new car scrappage scheme, along with 43 new laws to reform the country’s

economy.

The Government said that tax revenues were proving to be higher than budgeted for this year, and were expected to increase by a further 3.8% in 2013. EU Economic Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn stated that the reforms went further Brussels’ requirements. “I particularly welcome the ambitious plans to establish an independent fiscal council, to further liberalise professional services, and to effectively reduce the fragmentation of the internal market in Spain,” Mr Rehn said. Meanwhile, Castilla-La Mancha has become the fifth of Spain’s 17 regional governments to request funds from the rescue fund set up by Madrid. The central Spanish region said it would request 848m euros from the 18bn-euro Regional Liquidity Fund, joining Valencia, Murcia and Catalonia, who have collectively requested 3bn euros, and Andalucia, which has yet to specify how much it needs. Expectations that Spain is about to ask for a financial bailout from its eurozone partners are increasing daily and experts believe this latest round of austerity measures will lead to fewer conditions from the EU should a bailout eventually be sought.

36-year-old Touria, mother to a threeyear-old boy, went into surgery on April 20th 2007 at Madrid’s Hospital San Camilo for a rhinoseptoplasty - a routine operation carried out on people who have difficulty breathing through their noses. Half an hour later, she came into a coma and died on September 13th without ever waking up.. His mother, 75-yearold Isabel Marín, then began a legal battle to prove that her daughter had been the victim of a medical error. Now, a court in Madrid has ruled in her favour and the anaesthetist has been sentenced to a year in prison and has been disqualified from practising for a further three years, after committing what the judge described as “serious professional negligence”.

A court in Llíria has decided to hold on remand and without bail the 34-year-old man arrested in connection with the fires in the Villamarchante area of Valencia. At the Public Prosecutor’s request, the judge has charged the man with attempted murder on the basis that many people’s lives were put at risk by the fires. The culprit, who lives in Ribarroja, was arrested by police this morning for deliberately starting three separate fires in Villamarchante on September 24th. The fires destroyed two hectares of land and forced 18 people to be evacuated from their homes and a school in the area to be evacuated and closed.

“My daughter couldn’t breathe very well through her nose and had to sleep with her mouth open, so she went to have an operation to solve the problem, but ended up dead,” mourns Isabel, who feels responsible for not having “prevented” Touria from entering the operating theatre. “It was not a major disability, she could live reasonably well and I had a bad feeling,” she said, displaying a photo of her daughter to the press. Touria was, in fact, tempted to leave the clinic after being left to wait all day. “We arrived at midday and she went into theatre at eleven o’clock at night. They had been busy all day,” says her mother. Since Touria was taking medication for hyperthyroidism, the anaesthetist should have taken extra care in preparing her for

her operation. A beta blocker should have been admimistered because of the danger of the patient suffering a thyroid storm, but he failed to do so and the patient did indeed suffer a thyroid storm on the operating table, leaving her in a coma. The judge said the omission constituted a “violation of the basic rules of anaesthetic induction,” and ordered the anaesthetist to pay 158,000 euros to the family. Despite the doctor’s conviction, Isabel cannot forget the bitter experience she had in the waiting room, when the doctor came out and told her, coldly, that her daughter had gone into a coma and, right there and then, threw back the 2,600 Euros they had paid up front for the operation.

Mother Wins Compensation After Daughter Dies Following Routine Operation

Officers from the Guardia Civil are today continuing their search for a 70-year-old German woman, Gertrud G., who went missing in Henares (Lorca) last Friday after being swept away in her car by a torrent of water. Sniffer dogs were given clothing belonging to the woman to smell, in the hope that they would be able to locate her, but came up with nothing in the exhaustive search. The missing woman left her home in Los Jarales de Lorca (Puerto Lumbreras) at 11am on Friday on her way to the Almenara shopping centre in Lorca. Her car was later found 1.5km from la Venta de las Macetas, in the Rambla de los Casarejos, parallel to the main A-91 Murcia-Granada road, but there was no sign of the woman herself.

Spain floods: Ten die in Malaga, Almeria and Murcia Report by Martin Shortland

The severe storms and torrential rain that swept across the province last week, causing havoc in towns and communities from Murcia to Malaga, has claimed the life of a British woman. The area to the north of Almeria was one of the most badly affected by the enormous downpour, as flash floods destroyed large parts of the region. Roads became rivers, vehicles disappeared and homes were engulfed by a sea of water and mud. Hundreds of people had to be evacuated from their homes and emergency services were unable to cope with calls for help as the storm raged for almost 48 hours. At least 10 people are known to have died in what’s being described as the biggest tragedy to hit the region in more than two decades. The British woman was reported missing in the town of Vera on Thursday and her body was found on Sunday. She has been named as Diana Dudas, a 52 year old married woman who had lived in the town for some years. Her Spanish husband was unavailable for comment and it is believed she

Six dead in light aircraft crash

Six people have been killed after a light aircraft bound for Valencia crashed in the Tirol region of Austria in the early hours of Sunday morning. Red Cross sources say the craft set off from Innsbruck at 06.50hrs with seven passengers and one pilot, but then disappeared off the radar half an hour later when crossing a forest. Bad weather conditions are blamed for poor visibility, which may have led to the crash. When emergency services reached the scene, one of the survivors had been able to climb free from the wreckage on foot, and another was seriously injured and had to be air-lifted to hospital. But the rescue helicopter could not take off for some time, due to the bad weather.

PHOTO: richardbrenneman.wordpress.com

The other five passengers and the pilot were killed instantly in the crash, which caused the craft to go up in flames and led to a fire in the forest.

has relatives living in the UK. A foreign office spokesperson, dealing with the case, said it was looking into the tragedy and liaising with local authorities. The circumstances surrounding her death are unknown. Mrs Dudas ran an holistic therapy clinic and hairdressers in the town. A close friend described her as being, “an absolutely lovely person, very warm, very caring and with a great sense of humour.” She added that everyone who knew her were shocked and devastated. Elsewhere, bridges were brought down and motorways had to be closed. The rail link between Almeria, Valencia and Madrid was closed for a time and flights into the region’s airports were diverted to other destinations. Electricity and water supplies were also badly affected in many areas. The heavy flooding

follows months of drought and above average temperatures, triggering wildfires in many parts of the province. Among the death toll are two young children found in a submerged car near Murcia. Further north, 15 people are in hospital with serious injuries after a ferris wheel collapsed at a fair in the town of Gandia. Thousands of military personnel continue to help in the clean-up operation, including members of the Spanish Legion stationed at their base near Almeria. Although the rain has now stopped, a huge amount of damage has been done. In a region already crippled by high unemployment and debt, the bill to carry out repairs is estimated to be in excess of 1 million euros, a sum that many local authorities will struggle to contribute to.

Massive gathering surrounds Congress

An estimated 4,500 people surrounded the Congress building in Madrid this evening, calling for democracy and for the government to resign. Led by the same groups which organised the countrywide protests on Wednesday, tonight’s gathering was a smallerscale affair which kicked off at 18.00hrs and went on until around 21.00hrs. Although most of the protesters were from Spain’s hardest-hit age-group – from 20s to 40s – everyone from the youngest children to the elderly were seen in the crowds. Banners carried bore slogans that roughly translated as ‘the government wants us to be seen and not heard’; ‘vote for vultures: they peck your eyes out just like the government does’; ‘Detestable debts: Referendum NOW’; ‘We want bailing out too – from

politicians, that is’; and the refrain ‘No hay pan para tanto chorizo’, which, in Anglo-Saxon idiomatic language, would be something along the lines of ‘There are not enough cups and saucers for so many tea-leaves’. So far, no incidents have been reported, unlike Wednesday’s protests where several people were arrested and many say they were victims of extreme police brutality. One man said he spent the night in a cell after being accused of threatening officers, which he denies. He said he asked for water, but was left for over 10 hours without a drop to drink. Demonstrations were particularly heartfelt today after a broad overview of the 2013 budget was announced, including more cutbacks in healthcare, education, dole money, cultural and charitable activities, but with a much lower percentage being reduced from the funding of the Church. The only bright notes were that the president has agreed to drop his salary to just over 78,000 euros a year, and pensions will rise slightly. But if the EU bail-out application is presented – as seems likely – with this and the recession combined, Spain’s overall debt will rocket to 90 per cent of its rapidly-diminishing gross national product.

Man gored to death in Ontinyent bull-running in front of his wife: parents say show must go on Boeing plans to allow use of mobile ‘phones and Wi-Fi on board

Airline manufacturer Boeing has said in a press release that it has improved connectivity in some of its fleet of commerical aircraft. Passengers on board Boeing jets will be able to use their mobile ‘phones or connect to the Internet via a Wi-Fi network with total normality. Days are numbered for the familiar phrase: “we remind you that passengers are not permitted to use their mobile ‘phones on board”. Boeing is going to offer all the airlines it supplies new connection possibilities. Spending hours on board an aeroplane will now no longer be an issue for those who wish to take advantage of travelling time to sruf the Internet or take or make telephone calls. The new Boeing 747-8 and 777, which will be rolling off the production line at the end of 2013, will have a much better mobile ‘phone coverage, allowing passengers to use their ‘phones, connect to a Wi-Fi network, access the Interne, use in-flight entertainment systems (IFE) and watch live streams of TV programmes. Furthermore, the possibility of using these improved connections on existing Boeing 737 models is currently being evaluated and could be available in the not-so-distant future. By the end of the year, the company aims to have the Boeing 787 offering a complete range of wireless connections. “Passengers want to have the option to remain connected to their email, the Internet and other on-line services during the flight. We are working closely with various suppliers of wireless services to upgrade the system in our entire fleet”, said the company in today’s press statement. The systems currently being developed on Boeing jets are the Panasonic Global Communication Suite and Thales Top Connect. The Wireless media streaming is expected to be available on all Boeing planes by 2014.

A 35-year-old man has been killed after being gored by a bull during the fiestas in Ontinyent (Valencia) this weekend. But his family has asked for the bull-running events to carry on, despite his death. The deceased’s parents say the bulls should continue until the end of the fiestas in honour of their son. Luis Fernando R. B., who was one of 2,000 spectators, is said to have been running for cover into the cordoned-off area for members of the public but did not make it in time. He was gored in the chest and the bull’s horns penetrated his right lung. Two surgeons who were in attendance attempted to operate on him at the scene, but it was too late to save him and they said he had been killed instantly in the accident. Luis’ wife witnessed the entire incident, which occurred at around 19.30hrs on Saturday. The rest of the fiesta was suspended and the town hall flag hung at half-mast, in honour of a young man

who was said to be a wellknown and much-loved local resident. He is the fifth person to have been killed at bullrunning events this year in the Comunidad Valenciana. Experienced bull-handler Juan Ramón Majín, 34, died instantly after being gored in the back in Canet d’En Berenguer (Valencia) in June, soon after a man in Alboraya (Valencia) was killed after his head was literally gored off. Another young man died in Godella (Valencia) when he was crushed by a young cow whilst filming the bous al carrer (‘bulls in the street’), and an 86-yearold man was killed in Chiva

(Valencia) during a bullrunning. Many other serious injuries in the region have been reported, including a man in Burriana (Castellón) who underwent emergency surgery after a goring left him with a perforated right lung, serious head injuries and open wounds in the face and arm, and a 38year-old man who broke his right ankle and suffered head injuries in La Pobla de Farnals (Valencia). A number of people suffered cuts, bruises and open wounds due to gorings, including a 17year-old boy in Almassora (Valencia).

More on weight loss with EFT... Studies have shown that people lose weight more effectively when part of a group, where behavioural coaching is included as well as dietary advice. People who lose weight on their own often find it hard to make lifestyle changes. Sharing success and overcoming setbacks can be helpful and supportive if shared within a group. For many people food acts as a tranquiliser and this is why some people go on to form an addiction to certain types of foods. Unfortunately these foods often come with side effects – namely weight gain and obesity. The key to successful weight management lies in identifying the specific reasons behind weight issues and then subsequently changing eating patterns to those which are more sensible and healthy. Dieting is not a quick and easy process and to think that it is, is a recipe for disaster. After all, it took time to put the weight on, so it makes sense that it will take time to release it. Why do diets fail? Dieting usually fails because of the

SALES representative required

following three points: • The dieter has an unreasonable expectation of how much weight they will lose or how long it will take. • The dieter does not allow for any setbacks or indeed plan for any setbacks, and how they would deal with them. • The dieter fails to recognise their triggers and emotions that lead to cravings and weight gain, or weight loss How does EFT help? EFT stops cravings and the need for emotional eating. The real benefit of EFT however, is not the speed of the weight loss, but in how it helps you from regaining the weight you have released. Once you release your weight, EFT helps to stop you from self-sabotaging yourself. It is an effective and valuable tool that you can use over and over again as different aspects or emotions occur as you travel along on your weight releasing journey. If you require more information and to find out about a Weight Releasing Group near you, please do not hesitate to contact me via email – info@drewryder.com or via telephone by ringing 660 326 194.

IN and around spain...

Tarragona is the perfect town for soaking up history, sun and the laid back Spanish lifestyle. Roman history buffs - it doesn’t get much better than this, short of visiting Rome itself. The Romans settled a military camp here originally in 218bc, which quickly grew to be the capital of Roman Spain. Many of the Roman buildings have been well preserved and meandering around the city, you get a real feel for what a beachside Romanesque town really felt like.

Tarragona

The Museu De La Romanitat provides access to the Roman Circus and Roman Vaults, where the chariots raced to entertain the crowds. A short walk towards the ocean from here and you will come across the Balco De Maditerrani, a lovely look out that takes in the breathtaking view of the excellently preserved Roman Amphitheatre, with the stunning Mediterranean as its back drop. There are also other Roman sites scattered around Tarragona, including the Passeig Arquelogic, which is a walking path around the old city walls starting just west of the main street La Rambla Nova.

restaurants where you can take a break from the sun worshipping with a cool drink and some food under the shaded huts. The free spirited beachgoer may even want to check out the Playa el Torn but only if you’re willing to forget your swimwear! Parallel to La Rambla Nova is the Rambla Vella, the main street of the old town where you’ll find restaurants and shopping, also check out the Placa de la Font for a great choice of cafes. Other attractions of Tarragona include the Musea Arqualaogic, which has a rich array of cultural artifacts from Tarragona’s history including mosaics, frescoes and pottery and is free to get into on Tuesdays. The 12th Century Cathedral with Roman and Gothic influences is a must see for history buffs, as well as the Necropolis Museau which holds a fascinating collection of Roman, Pagan and Christian burial relics. For the more adventurous, or to sweeten the holiday for younger people, just 7km from Tarragona is Port Adventura, a huge theme park catering for the tamer ride goers and for those daring enough to take on Europe’s biggest rollercoaster - the Dragon Kahn. Along with many other thrilling rides there is a fantastic water park (the Caribe aquatic) and don’t miss the sound and light show in the evening. A word of advice, to save yourself from walking and queuing in the hot Spanish sun, the theme park is much pleasanter on a summer evening, and that leaves the daytime to enjoy the water park.

La Rambla Nova is a lovely wide boulevard lined with shops, restaurants and accommodation and ends dramatically with a cliff face that overlooks the main beach - The Platja de Miracle.

For a true local treat visit Tarragona during the Saint Magi Festival in August to watch the Castellers form human pyramids; a life size statue also adorns La Rambla Nova if you miss the actual event.

There are many other quality beaches surrounding Tarragona; the Platja Larga is ideal for those who like things a bit quieter. There are also numerous caravan parks and even a couple of beachside

How to get a good night’s rest

Insomnia makes you desperate. Desperate not to be constantly exhausted and desperate not to dread every night. If, like me, you have spent many a small hour staring sore-eyed at the ceiling as the light begins to creep in through the cracks in the curtains, you’ll no doubt understand. Insomnia affects about 30 per cent of us – with over 12 million prescriptions for sleeping pills written every year. Our sleeplessness costs the NHS £36 million annually. Because my insomnia is sporadic, I have never been to the doctor for prescription drugs and, interestingly, experts say most poor sleepers don’t need them anyway. However, there ARE proven methods to beat insomnia. Here, our experts recommend ways to get a good night’s sleep – and, having tried them, I can say with confidence that they work. UNDERSTAND YOUR FEAR HOW? A course of cognitive behavioural therapy – a type of psychotherapy – will help change the way you think

and behave. ‘CBT helps overcome negative beliefs about sleep,’ says Dr Nicola Barclay, Associate Director of the Northumbria Centre for Sleep Research. ‘You may tell yourself that you won’t function the next day if you have no sleep, but this probably isn’t true.’ PROOF: More than 100 clinical trials have shown that CBT is the most effective long-term solution for insomnia. TRY: Sleepio (a six-week online course), left, £49.99, boots.com TRICK THE MIND THE BODY HOW? With melatonin supplements. Dr Guy Leschziner, consultant neurologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and London Bridge hospitals, says: ‘Melatonin is a hormone which is secreted by a gland in the brain. It tells the mind and body it’s time to go to sleep. Supplements contain a synthetic version.’ Short-term use – for a few weeks – is acceptable, says Russell Foster, Professor of Circadian Neuroscience at Oxford University and author of Sleep: A Very Short Introduction. But he adds: ‘It shouldn’t be used long-term because of the

concern of dependency.’ PROOF: A 2008 study showed that a daily oral dose of 2mg of melatonin for three weeks improved sleep and morning alertness. ‘It doesn’t work for everyone,’ says Sultan Dajani, of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. ‘If it hasn’t worked within three weeks, it isn’t going to.’ TRY: Ask your doctor about a prescription but don’t buy online as many are fakes. WAKE UP GRADUALLY HOW? With light therapy – specially-designed lamps that gradually increase the amount of light they emit, creating an artificial dawn or dusk. Prof Foster says: ‘This activates areas of the brain promoting alertness, and turns off the sleep hormone melatonin.’ As evening approaches, the lamps can be used in reverse, gradually emitting less light to create an artificial dusk and so encouraging relaxation. PROOF: ‘Receptors in the eyes trigger the release of the hormones that regulate the sleep cycle,’ says Prof Foster. TRY: Lumie Bodyclock

British workers ‘are the most depressed in Europe’ one in four is diagnosed with the illness

British workers are the most likely to be diagnosed with depression in Europe, a survey has found. The worrying extent of the illness in the UK was laid bare by the poll that revealed 26 per cent of Britons had received the diagnosis from their GP, compared with 12 per cent of Italians. Those in the UK also took the most time off as a result of the illness, recording 41 days on average compared with the European mean of 36. The study from the European Depression Association, also revealed than one in 10 working people in Europe have taken time off because of the debilitating psychological condition, which is equivalent to 21,000 lost working days. In 2010, depression was estimated to cost the EU £73billion. Despite the size of the problem, nearly one in three managers reported they had no formal support or resources to deal with employees who have depression, and 43 per cent called for better policies and legislation to protect employees. A quarter of employees with depression said they did not inform their work with many saying they feared it would put their job at risk. The IDEA survey (Impact of Depression in the Workplace in Europe Audit) polled more than 7,000 people in Europe. MEP Stephen Hughes said: ‘Depression in the workplace is an employment and societal challenge that is causing serious damage and which requires attention and action from the European Union.’ Depression is the biggest mental health challenge among working-age people, affecting one in five people at some point in their lives. However, the poll revealed there is still poor awareness of common symptoms. While 88 per cent identified low mood or sadness as a sign, just a third knew that forgetfulness could point

to depression and around half knew it could affect concentration. When asked what is needed to support employees with depression in the workplace, managers most often cited more counselling services and better government legislation and policies. Dr Vincenzo Costigliola, President of the European Depression Association said ‘The results of the IDEA survey show that much needs to be done in raising awareness and supporting employees and employers in recognising and managing depression in the workplace. ‘We ask policymakers to consider the impact of depression on the workforce and charge them with addressing depression and workers and workplace safety.’ Full results of the IDEA survey will be published in 2013.

DEPRESSED? Below are the more common symptoms associated with depression:

- Persistent sadness or low mood. This may be with or without weepiness. - Marked loss of interest or pleasure in activities you normally enjoy. - Disturbed sleep compared with your usual pattern. - Change in appetite. - Fatigue (tiredness) or loss of energy. - Agitation or slowing of movements. - Poor concentration or indecisiveness. Even simple tasks can seem difficult. - Feelings of worthlessness, or excessive or inappropriate guilt. - Preoccupation with death and dying. Visit your GP if you think you might be affected

Kyero.com reportes that the promotion includes a ceremony in Stockholm on Tuesday, at the Spanish Embassy, to which estate agents, tourism operators and local authorities are invited. The event will be hosted by the Spanish ambassador, Javier Jiménez-Ugarte, who will be accompanied by the President of the Málaga Builders Association, José Prado. The President of Málaga Council and Tourist Board, Elijah Bendodo, will lead the Málaga delegation in this promotion, whose objective is to present the destination as the perfect place for a second home, as they have done in promotions previously in Germany, Bulgaria and

Russia.

In the Costa Del Sol, the majority of the Nordic market are Swedish visitors, but there are also some Norwegian, Finnish and Danish. During 2011 the number of Swedish visitors reached nearly 120,000 in the province of Málaga, which represents an increase of 41% year-on-year. El Economista reported that in order to be included in the product “Living Costa Del Sol”, all homes must have all the necessary documentation in order which Spanish law requires for the legal sale of a residence. In addition, during this trip the Málaga delegation are to work together with the tour operator TUI, to look for new strategies in order to improve the flow of Nordic travellers to the province.

EU plans to boost industry to 20% of Europe’s economy

The European Commission has outlined plans to reindustrialise Europe so that 20% of its economy will come from industry by 2020, up from 16% now.

Over the past decades, European companies have moved production to cheaper, developing countries. It now says it needs to explore ways of boosting EU manufacturing or future competitiveness will be compromised. The commission hopes to improve the EU’s performance in industry by helping to iron out differences within the 27-country single European market that hinder the

free movement of goods.

The commission says the EU needs its real economy now more than ever, to underpin growth and boost jobs.

Its says too much of the internal market is regulated either by national technical regulations or not at all. The commission plans to improve financing for small and mediumsized companies by making it easier for private investors to back them. One of the sectors it hopes to expand is clean technology, where it says Europe has a dominant world market share in automatic waste separation, where materials can be sorted and recycled by machine.

EU says banks should split risky trading from banking

A European Union advisory group says that Europe’s banks should be split into separate legal entities, in order to protect ordinary retail banking from risky trading. The review was set up to look at whether banks should be structurally reformed to avoid another crisis. The group agreed that banks should separate certain high-risk banking activities from everyday banking. Banks likely to be affected include Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas. The report’s suggestions echo those put forward in a report into the UK banking sector by Sir John Vickers and the DoddFrank Act on banking regulation in the US, both designed to avert further financial crises in these countries. Europe’s leaders see banking reform as

going hand-in-hand with supporting the economy.

The EU’s report also looked at the risks of lending on property, and recommends it should be underpinned with larger capital reserves. Lending too much to overvalued property was at the core of the banking crisis that led to the credit crunch. Ireland’s over reliance on property, which helped it to thrive in the boom years, prompted it to ask for a rescue. It is also the reason Spain has asked for help for its banking sector.

risk-taking - often in trading highlycomplex instruments or real estate-related lending - and excessive reliance on shortterm funding in the run-up to the financial crisis.” It also examined ways of spreading the risk burden of a collapsed bank to a wider group, so that bondholders, as well as shareholders and the state, would take some of the losses in future. It suggested that bankers should accept such a bond as part of their bonus, the value of which would fall if risky trades or lending lost money.

The report was prepared by a panel of banking specialists, chaired by the Bank of Finland governor Erkki Liikanen.

The report also says banks should have higher capital “buffers” to protect against future banking crises.

He said banks had been reckless: “The analysis conducted revealed excessive

The report will be passed to EU internal markets commissioner Michel Barnier,

who will make the decision on whether to present proposals in line with its recommendations and whose officials write the first draft of new laws. Mr Barnier said: “The Commission will look at the impact of these recommendations both on growth and on the safety and integrity of financial services.” The report, which the group said should be discussed before the end of the year, is just one of a number of high-level reviews of the banking sector, which is around 8,000-strong across the 27-country European Union. On Wednesday, the European Banking Authority will release its final report on banks’ implementation of plans to establish temporary capital buffers.

Q. My house and my car have been wrecked by the flood. What do I do next? A. You need to take the following steps: Insurance cover: In Spain damage caused by natural disasters are covered by a system of insurance of last resort called the “Consorcio de Compensacion de Seguros”. Your first port of call will be your own insurance company, but they will probably inform that your policy does not cover you and direct you to the Consorcio. (I recommend careful reading of the policy in all cases) The damages indemnified by the Consorcio will be those that affect people or items which are subject to cover by virtue of an insurance policy taken out with any authorised insurance company and always on condition that said policy is in force when the damage is produced and that the insured is up to date with payment of the corresponding premium. In other words the Consorcio takes over the position of your insurer and will pay out the same amount, as your insurer would have, based on your policy.(in other words the Consorcio only pays if you had a valid insurance policy) This article has been written in good faith but it is no substitute for individualized legal advice and therefore we accept no responsibility for the consequences of the use of the above information. Banesto Launches New Discounted Homes Campaign

Banesto’s president, Antonio Basagoiti, told El Economista that the bank has sold a total of 3,170 homes in the last six months with discounts of up to 80% from the initial price. In this period, the bank has sold over 70% of the properties that made up their campaign ‘Homes at prices from twenty years ago’. The average price of the homes purchased reached 61,115 euros, and had three bedrooms and an area of about 90 square metres. In March this year, they put 4,600 properties up for sale, scattered throughout the country, at an average price per square metre of 638 euros, the same as it cost on average in Spain in 1992. In most cases the buyers were either young couples wanting to start a family and who preferred to have their own house, or investors seeking to capitalise on their investment through rentals. Banesto has now launched a new campaign with discounts of up to 80% on another package of 1,800 homes, and is offering financing of up to 100% of the cost of the property, and a maximum term of 40 years. The offer is aimed at “all those who are wanting to move house before the tax changes that are planned for next year enter into force”, said Basagoiti. The properties included in the campaign have an average cost of 56,776 euros and a discount of up to 80% of their initial price. The homes, which may be resales or brand new, have an average of 3 bedrooms and an area of about 90 square metres.

Pension Expenditure Up 4.4% Year-on-Year

Spending on Social Security contributory pensions amounted to 7,444.1 million euros in September, which is 4.4% more than in the same month of 2011, the Ministry of Employment and Social Security reported this week. Of this amount, more than 5,079 million euros corresponded to the payment of monthly retirement pensions (+5% compared to September 2011), 1,401 million euros for widow’s pensions (+3.1%) and 838.6 million euros for permanent disability pensions(+2.4%). The average pension amounted to 950.16 euros per month, which represented an increase of 3.4% over the same month of last year. The average pension amount in the system, comprising all the different types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, family allowance etc.), was 832.46 euros per month, an increase of 3.1% year-on-year. The widow’s pension stood at 602.67 euros per month, up 2.6%, while the permanent disability pension reached an average amount of 889.03 euros per month, an increase of 2.1%. In September, the number of Social Security contributory pensions was 8,942,282, representing a growth of 1.3%.

I am writing this just into September and what a difference in life down here – The sun has lost its mega heat and life is all at a pleasant temperature / humidity and the coastal roads / resorts are back to being empty – Madrid is full again ! It really is like turning a tap off on 1st September. Rain soon ? Spain needs it – one of the wells on our land went dry this year – first time since we have been here – the water table must be low - but lets hope we don’t get the Gotta Fria – days of torrential rain in Autumn - any new comers to southern Spain if it does come get your supplies in and baton down the hatches…

option may be to go for a SKYPLUS recording box - even if you don’t want one ! At least SKY do not now charge extra to use a recording box but they do for watching HD – 10 pounds a month – but I would hope that they drop that charge if only HD is available …………… but SKY being the money orientated company it is that may not happen. Anyway don’t panic yet – no announcement yet re the demise of SD but watch this space for information.

21

(2.47 acres) may contain over 750 types of trees and 1500 species of higher plants.

World Rainforest Week 12th-18th October

At least 80% of the developed world's diet originated in the tropical rainforest. Its bountiful gifts to the world include fruits like avocados, coconuts, figs, oranges, lemons, grapefruit, bananas, guavas, pineapples, mangos and tomatoes; vegetables including corn, potatoes, rice, winter squash and yams; spices like black pepper, cayenne, chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, sugar cane, turmeric, coffee and vanilla and nuts including Brazil nuts and cashews.

Medicinal Value Currently, only 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, yet less than 1% of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists. The U.S. National Cancer Institute has identified 3000 plants that are active against cancer cells - 70% of these plants are found in the rainforest. Twenty-five percent of the active ingredients in today's cancer-fighting drugs come from organisms found only in the rainforest. Vincristine, extracted from the rainforest plant, periwinkle, is one of the world's most powerful anticancer drugs. It has dramatically increased the survival rate for acute childhood leukemia since its discovery. Today, over 100 pharmaceutical companies and several branches of the US government are engaged in plant research projects for possible drugs and cures for viruses, infections, cancer and even AIDS.

The Disappearing Rainforests We are losing Earth's greatest biological treasures just as we are beginning to appreciate their true value. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. Rainforests are being destroyed because the value of rainforest land is perceived as only the value of its timber by short-sighted governments, multi-national logging companies and land owners. One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second with tragic consequences for both developing and industrial countries. Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microorganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next quarter century due to rainforest deforestation. Experts estimate that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation - that equates to 50,000 species a year! As the rainforest species disappear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources.

The Wealth of the Rainforests The Amazon Rainforest covers over a billion acres, encompassing areas in Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia and the Eastern Andean region of Ecuador and Peru - if Amazonia were a country, it would be the ninth largest in the world! Described as the "Lungs of our Planet", it provides the essential environmental world service of continuously recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. More than 20 percent of the world oxygen is produced in the Amazon Rainforest. More than half of the world's estimated 10 million species of plants, animals and insects live in the tropical rainforests. One-fifth of the world's fresh water is in the Amazon Basin. One hectare

Rainforest Action Experts agree that by leaving the rainforests intact and harvesting its many nuts, fruits, oilproducing plants and medicinal plants, the rainforest has more economic value than if they were cut down to make grazing land for cattle or for timber. If managed properly, the rainforest can provide the world's need for these natural resources on a perpetual basis. Promoting the use of these sustainable and renewable sources could stop the destruction of the rainforests. By creating a new source of income, the rainforests becomes more valuable alive than cut and burned. However, sufficient demand of sustainable and ecologically harvested rainforest products is necessary for preservation efforts to succeed. Purchasing sustainable rainforest products can effect positive change by creating a market for these products while supporting the native people's economy and provides the economic solution and alternative to cutting the forest just for the value of its timber.

Greece predicts deeper 2012 recession

Greece is predicting its economy will shrink by much more than previously estimated this year. Its economy will contract by 6.5% this year, worse than a previous estimate of 4.8% in March suggested to its bailout lenders, it said in a draft budget submitted to parliament. Greece also said its economy will shrink for a sixth year in 2013. About 8bn euros worth of cuts have been proposed for 2013, covering public-sector pay, pensions and welfare. The economy will contract by 3.8% next year, the Greek government predicted. The deeper contraction in the economy means that Greece will have to find extra money. This may occur through further spending cuts and

tax rises, or through additional money from its lenders - perhaps in the form of write-offs or postponements of what Greece already owes them. Spending cuts are necessary if Greece is to get the next instalment of the funds from the IMF and eurozone that bailed it out - again - earlier this year. In March, when Greece agreed its latest bailout with its lenders, it predicted the economy would shrink by 4.8%. “Confirmation of the cuts will prompt more anger here, where almost one in four Greeks are now unemployed, a record high,” said the BBC’s Mark Lowen in Athens. “The aim is to return the country to what’s called a primary surplus, so the only deficit Greece would face would be due to the interest it’s paying on its debt. More cuts are likely to come in 2014.”

The Bank of Greece had estimated that the country’s economy would contract by about 5% this year. The three parties in government reached a “basic agreement” on the austerity package for 2013-14 only last week - which came after 50,000 anti-austerity protesters took to the streets of Athens. The Greek government hopes to be able to present a final package of measures to the summit of eurozone finance ministers on 8 October. Greece received a bailout of 110bn euros in 2010 and 130bn euros earlier this year. In recent months, concerns that Spain and Italy may need bailouts have eclipsed concerns over Greece and whether it can cut spending enough to remain in the euro.

Eurozone unemployment at fresh high

Unemployment in the eurozone hit a fresh high of 18.2 million in August, the EU statistics agency has said.

The number out of work rose by 34,000, but after the July data was revised up, it meant the unemployment rate remained stable at a record high of 11.4%. The highest unemployment rate was recorded in Spain, where 25.1% of the workforce is out of a job, and the lowest of 4.5% was recorded in Austria. The unemployment rate in Germany was 5.5%, Eurostat said. Last week, the European Commission warned of the existence of “a real social emergency crisis” due to the fall in household income and growing household poverty. Youth unemployment remains a particular concern, with the rate among under-25s hitting 22.8% across the eurozone, and 52.9% in Spain. The commission repeated its call to governments and businesses to act to try to avoid the “disaster” of “a lost generation”. In Greece, the most recent figures recorded in June show that more than 50% of the young workforce has no job. These two countries have by far the highest unemployment rate in the eurozone, as both governments look to cut spending and raise taxes to try and cut high debt levels.

The eurozone as a whole is also struggling to generate the economic growth needed to stimulate employment. Its economy shrank by 0.2% between April and June, with Italy and Spain stuck in recession and France registering no growth for the past three quarters. The notable exception is the German economy, Europe’s biggest, which grew by 0.3% in the second quarter. Across the wider 27-nation European Union, unemployment rose by 49,000 to 25.5 million people, Eurostat said, with the unemployment rate stable at 10.5%. A commission spokesman said the total was “clearly unacceptable”. Compared with a year earlier, the unemployment rate rose in 20 countries, fell in six and remained stable in the UK. By way of comparison, the unemployment rate in the US was 8.1% in August and 4.1% in Japan. The European Commission said last week that disparities between the best and worst performing economies had continued to widen in the second quarter of the year. It also expressed concern about the social situation, which remained “very serious”. The number of people experiencing financial stress remains historically high, it said in its latest quarterly review of the jobs situation across the European Union. Household incomes had declined dramatically in Greece, where disposable incomes had dropped by 15.7% between 2009 and 2011, the commission said. Households in Ireland were living on 9% less. Child poverty was also becoming an issue for an increasing number of households, particularly in countries where child benefits are inadequate. Almost a fifth of families are at risk of poverty in Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal, the review said.

Eurozone manufacturing downturn eases, PMI suggests

The downturn in the manufacturing sector in the eurozone eased slightly in September, according to a closely-watched survey.

The Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the region was 46.1 in the month, up from 45.1 in August. Any score below 50 indicates contraction. Despite the slight upturn, manufacturing in the eurozone has now contracted for 14 consecutive months. Earlier, data showed that manufacturing in China shrank for the second month. China’s PMI rose to 49.8 in September from 49.2 in August, government data showed. In the UK, the PMI indicated that manufacturing output shrank during September. The Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the UK manufacturing sector fell to 48.4 in September from an upwardly revised 49.6 in August. Only the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands recorded growth in manufacturing output, but there were

improvements in German, Italian and Spanish PMIs, all of which hit six-month highs. By contrast, France’s PMI, at 42.7, recorded one of its sharpest falls in history, Markit said. Manufacturers across the eurozone reported weaker demand in domestic markets, while export orders also fell. More jobs were lost in the sector for the eighth month in a row, while input costs rose for the first time in four months. “Despite seeing some easing in the rate of decline last month, manufacturers across the euro area suffered the worst quarter for three years in the three months to September,” said Markit’s chief economist Chris Williamson. “The survey is consistent with manufacturing output falling at a quarterly rate of perhaps as much as 1%, which means the sector will act as a severe drag on economic growth.”

more children with diabetes to go to a summer camp especially for children with diabetes. This summer we were only able to send two children. We would dearly love to send many more next summer.

In conjunction with other Lions Clubs on the Spanish Costas, Mazarrón Lions are trying to help by making more people aware of how this illness can be averted, or recognised and treated early, by offering free information & testing to any who think that they may be at risk.

Registration and Sponsorship forms for either the 3km or 6km walk along the shoreline in Puerto are available from any Mazarrón Lions member, or from the Lions stall on Camposol Sector B any Friday between 11.00am and 1.00pm.. The registration fee is €5.00 each (€3.00 for under 12’s) or you can, of course, just register on the day if you don’t want to collect sponsorship. Medical personnel will be available on the day to offer various free ‘health check’ tests and, for a very small charge, (€1) blood/glucose level tests to help you to identify if you are ‘at risk’.

The World Health Organization estimates that 246 million people worldwide have diabetes, a global epidemic that is expected to affect 380 million by 2025. Currently around 11% of the population in Spain suffer from Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, and numbers are rising fast. The Spanish Diabetes Society (SED) are predicting a rise in diabetes sufferers to a staggering 25% of the population in the foreseeable future! Left untreated, amongst other things, diabetes can cause serious problems to a person’s sight, ambulation, and increase the risk of heart debility. On Saturday 10th November Between 10.00am and 4.00pm Starting & finishing at the new marina in Puerto de Mazarron... The Lions Club of Mazarrón are to hold a ‘STRIDES DIABETES AWARENESS’ Sponsored Walk to offer advice on how to identify, and cope with, types 1 & 2 diabetes and to raise money for sending

Representatives of other local Health & Welfare Charitable Organisations such will also be ‘on hand’ during the day. All registered participants will be given a commemorative Strides tee shirt to wear for the walk and a ‘Strides’ pin badge on completion of their walk. Diabetes can be deadly! Cadbury is launching a chocolate bar aimed at women in an attempt to win back lost sales among the diet-conscious. The Crispello is the first new chocolate bar launched by the company since the 1990s and will be backed by a £7million advertising campaign. Industry research shows that annual sales of single chocolate bars have fallen by some 6.6 per cent in a market worth around £800million a year. Evidence suggests that this slump is almost entirely caused by women buying less chocolate. Cadbury, owned by American food company Kraft, believes the

Mix the sour cream & dill together and serve each pork steak with a spoon of the dill sour cream and pilau. Pour over cider sauce & and serve at once.

Crispello will particularly appeal to women who are worried about putting on weight. The new bar comes in at 165 calories, compared with 260 for a Mars bar. The Crispello, which is similar in taste and consistency to Ferrero Rocher chocolates, has three chocolate-covered wafer shells with a soft milk chocolate filling. It is designed with a resealable pack so it can be eaten one piece at a time. The Crispello will be sold under the slogan ‘A little treat for you’, on the basis that women can enjoy it without feeling guilty. The strategy of designing

a chocolate bar specifically for one gender over another seems something of a throwback to the 1980s. The popular Yorkie bars were advertised then under the enduring slogan ‘It’s not for girls’ and featured manly truck drivers biting into the thick chunks. Brand manager at Kraft Foods, Toby Smart, said: ‘Crispello is a lighter way to enjoy the nation’s favourite chocolate taste.’ Earlier this year, Kraft rival Mars launched Galaxy Flutes in the UK, which is being sold as a lighter onthe-go chocolate snack. A Cadbury spokesman said: ‘The mix of wafer and chocolate is a lighter way to eat chocolate and we know from experience that women are attracted to this particular format. ‘It will also appeal to women because it is in three separate portions so they can consume a little at a time rather than in one go.’ The 30g bar will go on sale on October 8 with a recommended price of 50p.

Lapsang Souchong mustard anyone?

Designer sauce the latest dinner party must-have

Designer mustard is the latest dinner party must-have as traditional Colman’s or even fancy French wholegrain will no longer, er, cut the mustard. Food historian Robin Weir has created a new condiments collection for the East India Company using black mustard seeds. Their new Lapsang Souchong Mustard (which is made from the Chinese smoky flavoured tea) is ideal for barbecues or poached fish. ‘You can even eat it in a sandwich with butter,’ says Weir. ‘Or pep up a salad dressing.’ The collection also includes a fine Tewkesbury Mustard (with horseradish) and Bull Dog Mustard with added chilli. All cost £3.95 (theeastindia companyfinefood.com). And now a restaurant in Newcastle has opened in honour of the condiment — called Mrs Mustard it focuses on British dishes all served with specially blended mustards, from mulled wine to apple and chutney.

He added that more than a dozen countries - including the UK, Israel and Germany had banned foie gras production.

A spokesman told the Daily Telegraph: ‘We have instructed the appropriate individuals within the business to look into the allegations.’

‘Like many people,’ Sir Roger said, ‘I believe the sale of this “torture in a tin” should be illegal here, too. Sir Roger Moore has called for a boycott of one of Britain’s most famous department stores until it stops selling foie gras. The actor, 84, who played James Bond in seven movies, accused Fortnum & Mason of selling ‘torture in a tin’ at its London store. He also claimed the retailer was trying to ‘hoodwink’ shoppers into believing that the food is ethically sourced. Concerns have been raised in the past about foie gras because its production involves force-feeding grain and fat to geese or ducks. Sir Roger’s comments follow an investigation by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which he said found that some birds were unable to stand because they were so ‘desperately ill’. Writing on the Telegraph website, the actor said: ‘For years, Fortnum & Mason – one of the few remaining shops that still sell the vile product foie gras – have been attempting to hoodwink the public

into believing that the foie gras it sells in its food hall and restaurants is “ethical”. ‘Now, thanks only to PETA, we know that company’s claims are a sham.’ The actor said that PETA’s film showed terrible conditions at farms which supply the company that provides foie gras to Fortnum &

‘If a product causes so much suffering that is illegal to produce in the UK, then it should most definitely not be sold in any respectable British institution – let alone a shop such as Fortnum & Mason, which blatantly trades on its English heritage.’ The retailer said it would investigate PETA’s allegations, but said some of the footage was not taken at farms it used

(Written last Thursday, when we were treated to a small sample shower to prepare us for the main event on Friday!) We knew it was going to be busy when we arrived in the car park at Torrecárdenas Hospital. Despite the early hour the car park was fast approaching fullness, and the attendant, who had half an arm, was merrily waving his stump and grinning with glee as he directed car after car into the higgledy-piggledy lines that made up his kingdom. He was the happy hero of the hour. Patients were milling like anxious sheep in the main entrance, and the foyer, which normally conducts its business in an orderly and measured manner, was a heaving mass of humanity. Staff and patients were hithering and thithering as though they were not only late for something important, but had forgotten where that something was to be found. We arrived at Hematologia to see Nursie criss-crossing the corridor in search of a particular piece of paper in the manner of a terrier seeking its favourite toy in a haystack. Nursie is a tiny lady at the upper end of employment age. She has that air of benevolent control essential in grandmothers, which, added to her straight grey hair, studious josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk glasses and

obvious competence was at variance with the scurrying disorganisation of her search. She passed us at the trot carrying a piece of paper and muttering. She re-passed seconds later with another piece of paper, louder mutterings and followed by enough people to populate a small village. She and her retinue disappeared into her tiny cubbyhole; loud discussions followed, then the village people exited en masse, and I mean en masse! I peered apprehensively round the door, fearing that she might have been overcome by the sheer number of people in the one room, especially as several of them were economy sized, and half expecting to see her squashed flat on the floor like a cartoon road kill.

his point somewhat forcibly. I still cringe when I think of the episode – I really shouldn’t have missed. Needless to say I was immediately barred from using both weapons and just for good measure, was given strict instructions to keep away from the shot put. They needn’t have bothered; I could hardly lift the damn things and besides, I have never seen the point of lobbing cannon balls without a target. It’s not that I don’t like sport. I am a fan of Rugby Union, Formula One, KerPlunk and football – even the variety currently being played by my team Reading FC. Incidentally, although the team are known as The Royals these days, it wasn’t always so because for most of their history they had the nick name - the Biscuit Men, due to the town’s fame as the biscuit capital of the world and where the Huntley and Palmers factory was situated. I knew you were desperate for that piece of information. Anyway . . . I simply could not get enough of the recent London Olympics and Paralympics on TV and before that the Tour de France, heavily influenced naturally by yet more British success. No it’s all a question of physique, or in my By Colin Bird : badbirdnow@gmail.com case – lack of

However, she was sitting behind her desk, apparently undamaged, glasses in place and composure restored. I beckoned Pete forward, thus terminating his conversation with a Spanish granny, whose lack of teeth was more than compensated for by the magnificence of the wart on the end of her nose. He took his place, Nursie took up her elastic band and syringe and the world returned to normal. ‘A day of problems?’ I queried her. She looked at me over her glasses and smiled philosophically. ‘It’s raining!’ she said with a shrug. Did she know? Did they all know, except us, what was coming?

And for the Sporting Achievement of My Life? Two Pounds of King Edward’s! To include my name in the same sentence involving any kind of competitive sport is like finding the President of Syria on the Birthday Honours list. At school, I was to sport what locusts are to famine relief – a complete and utter duffer at best and highly dangerous at the very worst; having at one time wanged a discus through the science lab’s window and on another occasion almost impaling our bully of a games master with a javelin. I maintained that he should not have been standing in the way, and he was equally and incandescently adamant that I should not have been chucking the thing in the direction of the long jump pit. I thought that we could just agree to disagree, but he had other ideas and I was sent to the Deputy Head – an ex-Olympian - for a lecture on health and safety who, with the aid of a cane, underlined

physique. I have tried cycling, but it’s hard to find a circular course that defies the laws of physics and is entirely down-hill, and I am currently playing petanca but like a Chubby Brown joke, it’s obscenely funny. On the odd occasion I win a game, it seems to be cause for great merriment and celebration – Halley’s Comet is more frequent. It’s not that I am not streamlined. Quite the contrary I am almost whippet-like and in the sense that a toothpick is aero dynamic, then that’s me down to a tee. I would love to be able to ice skate and I can just imagine me gliding around a frozen village pond, hands clasped behind my back; my bobble hat set at a jaunty angle and scarf flowing out behind me as I wow the locals with my Christopher Dean impersonation. But it just isn’t me. My centre of gravity is too high or too low or something and I would just look silly sliding around the ice on my frozen rear end. It was the same when I roller skated as a kid – my knees had more grazing than the Ponderosa. I have always fancied Test cricket. All that scratching your back side and yawning as you meander around the pitch – the banter and

sun hats and cool designer shades with no bendy bits on the arms that fit over your ears. I would love to know how they keep them on in the unlikely event they have to break into anything more than an amble when chasing a ball. Then the bowlers who get to rub their private parts under the pretext of cleaning the ball – you even get breaks for lunch and tea thrown in. Everything about it appeals to my unsporting nature – minimum activity; basking in the sun in the West Indies or Sri Lanka and when it rains, off to the pavilion for a beer and a read of Fifty Shades of Grey. Brilliant. But I have as much hand eye coordination as a lobster on valium; I can’t catch for toffee and batting would be a nightmare – I would probably take out half the opposing team before I even hit a ball. My one and only moment of glory in any sporting event was at age nine when I won the potato race at Whitley Park Primary. But there’s not even a trophy to show for it. I simply got to keep the spuds which my Mum made into chips for tea that night.

Rodriquez and Antonio Poyato stood shoulder to shoulder in the main square of Alqueria. Historically a rare event with the leaders of the town’s two factions showing anything like unity. Physically it was also rather difficult as Rodriquez is thirty centimetres taller than his Hill People’s counterpart. They had jointly read the letter from the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores y de Cooperación and acquainted the villagers with the startling fact that Alqueria was no longer part of Spain. Reaction to the letter differed considerably. The elder members of the community treated the news with total indifference. Why should it affect them? Would it make the wine any cheaper? The price of wine is a recurring theme within this demographic group. The ability to afford vast quantities of the stuff is the true measure of any government. The only question is whether the new autonomous government of Alqueria will have a subsidised wine policy for the elderly. El Chanchullero the village bookmaker and resident spiv saw it as a golden opportunity. A tax free haven to rival Gibraltar. Put Gibraltar out of business then buy it from the British at a cut rate and turn it into a vertical themepark. ‘A Little Bit of Britain in the Med’ and an ape sanctuary. The parallels are obvious. Manuela, the unofficial leader of The Hill People has long been engaged in certain nocturnal activities, the legalities of which are frequently in question. If the new government could be persuaded to legalise or better still make her midnight pursuits compulsory then it would have her full weight behind it. Having Manuela behind one should not be taken lightly, nor is it at all unpleasant. Antonio Poyato saw wonderful opportunities for his Remitroot crop. Without the Spanish Government’s export ban due to it falling within the Non-proliferation of chemical weapons’ category he could sell worldwide. He saw Alqueria as the Remitroot capital of the world. Exporting the Root’s by-products to the eager and Remitroot starved nations at premium prices. As the chatter in the town’s square subsided no one doubted the challenge that confronted the village. An interim government would have to be formed and a constitution written. Can the conflicting barrios of the village put their petty squabbles to one side for the greater good? Is a government of unification possible with so many vested interests? That night a convoy of vehicles blocked all routes into and out of the village and Alqueria fell back on its own resources.

Easy money

pause for thought

I’m beginning to think I’m in danger of becoming a fully paid up member of the society of ‘Grumpy old men’ as more and more I find myself complaining at the state of modern society! How pushy and impolite so many people seem these days. How often folk act as though the World owes them a living, grabbing what they can with little or no expression of gratitude, and complaining volubly when hand-outs diminish. And yet if I’m honest I have to admit that I’ve little room to criticise others, for I’m not much better myself. . How quick I can be to complain, yet how slow to show gratitude. And as I look around, I have so much to be thankful for:- my health; a lovely home in a beautiful part of the World; a caring family; some wonderful friends; a plentiful supply of a rich diversity of food; a moderately fair and democratic society and freedom to come and go as I please. Yet how often I complain that this or that isn’t available, of financial constraints, of taxation or the incredibly complex legal and planning problems of this Country, and how rarely I pause to show gratitude for what I have. And so I find it helpful at this time of year, that Churches traditionally celebrate harvest, encouraging us to ‘count our blessings’ with true gratitude, and as Christians to recognise that, as the well-known harvest hymn puts it “All good things around us are sent from heaven above, so thank the Lord, Oh thank the Lord for all His love.” So we Anglicans will be holding traditional Harvest Thanksgiving at 11:00 in Mojacar on Sunday 7th October, and I’m quite sure other denominations will at some stage be doing likewise, but I’d like to suggest that, whether we share the Christian faith or not, we could all do well to use this Harvest time to pause, to count our many blessings, and recognise with gratitude how blessed indeed we all are. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any who wish to Worship, but further information about the Anglican Church and details of forthcoming events may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

rio aguas in full flood The A334 has become the bank of choice for more discerning Guardia Civil officers; every day they stop at various points between the E15 motorway and Purchena so that they can withdraw money from us cashpoints as we drive by. I use the road a lot for work and all during September I have seen up to three different checkpoints each time I’ve used it. A radical and novel idea I have come up with to stop the Guardia taking our money is to observe speed limits, stop where it says STOP, don’t drive wearing flip flops, wear seatbelts and always follow the letter of the law when driving. After many years of using the A334 I finally picked up a speeding fine passing Longos on the way to Arboleas. For once I didn’t notice the silver Citroen that the Guardia use as their radar car and was quite rightly taxed 50 Euros for doing 80 in a 60. With the weather now alternating between sunshine and floods of Biblical proportions the temperature has dropped as well. I drove up to Baza recently and tee shirt season has certainly finished up there as Baza sits at an altitude of 1100m. Common wisdom is that the temperature drops 1 degree Celsius for every 100m climbed so that’s why in Turre it was 24 degrees and a jaw droppingly cold 17 degrees in Baza. In recent mornings I’ve managed to avoid the pleading faces of my socks in the sock draw as they now struggle to escape after 6 months of confinement, jeans I’ve started to wear of an the evening but that’s more to add a layer as protection from the

Mozzies. Luckily this latest deluge drowned loads of the little illegitimates! The start of Autumn brings a whole host of new programmes to the telly box; fans of Strictly Come dancing can again air dance their way around the lounge of a Saturday evening. Love it or hate it as Shameless is back for a 10th season and the Dragons growl again in their den with Frankenstein’s bride again there to scare the children. Sadly Nigella has also returned to our screens; this time with her face strangely altered; I fear any more surgery will leave her with her ample bosom dangling as earrings. It’s a pity nothing was done about her annoying voice and the ludicrous vocabulary she uses. 4 weeks to the day after the last tempest, Almeria was hit by another tropical storm which dropped almost 10 inches of rain in just a few hours. The devastation is widespread and sadly lives were lost. The clean-up and the repairs to infrastructure will take a long time as roads and bridges collapsed. Many are still without electric and water. Luckily the flood defences and canal I recently constructed in our garden after the last inundation held up though I still ended wading knee deep in the flood waters to construct a makeshift dam using such technical marvels as sun lounger cushions and dog blankets. Biblically speaking it may be famine next guys so we all better stock up on tins of Spam and dried biscuits!

CD MONTESINOS 4 – 1 CALLOSA DEPORTIVA CDM TEAM: Cubano, Sergio, Dimitry, Fernando, Rubio, Andres, M & A, Sito, Chulo, Edu and Victor. SUBS: Geremias for Rubio, Omar for Victor, Fran for Chulo and Javi for Edu GOALS: Edu (2), Victor (P) and Andres (P) CD Montesinos remain unbeaten in this group after three matches and also go joint top of the division. Two goals from last season´s top scorer, Edu, both being top notch finishes and one a piece from Victor and Andres, both penalties, gave MONTE a well deserved victory. But the game certainly did not start smoothly for the home side. Despite being cheered on by almost 200 supporters at the Campo Municipal in Los Montesinos, they soon went behind to a well organised and willing Callosa side. But goals in the 38th and 45th minute – both from Edu and both stunning finishes, turned the result around before half time. 10 Minutes into the second half, Chulo ran into the area only to be brought down for a penalty, which Victor

transformed at the second attempt after the Callosa keeper had saved his first attempt well and just 8 minutes later, Andres puts the game beyond reach for the visitors as he transforms another penalty, this time after Victor had been brought down the in penalty area, to make the score 4-1. It is certainly a decent start to the season for CD Montesinos although you do get the feeling that they are still a few players short if the are to make a full blown challenge at promotion, especially in defence which at the moment looks quite fragile. But two wins and a draw is certainly a much better start than last season when the club went very close to gaining that promotion place. Next week, CD MONTESINOS are away at Torrevieja CF. At the time of going to print, kick off day and time has still to be confirmed so please keep looking at our website at w w w.c dmonte sinos.com. You can also contact us via email at thefullmonte2011@ hotmail.com or by telephone on 637 869 602. VAMOS MONTE!!!

MAGGOTS END.................................. RODS AND REELS lower water levels in the This weeks competition was the first in the Presidents cup. A series of 4 matches with all four to count. The venue being the Pedrera. We had not fished here for some 2-3 years as the embalse was filled, covering all the area where we fished. The venue´s water is now dropping like a stone as they are taking out as much water as possible, well that´s what it looks like!!!. The waters edge where it is dropping so fast is a quagmire, and all the gear had to be left up the bank some several meters away from you. The fishing was also not up too much with 5 anglers blanking (memoirs of another venue). Also, note for any new anglers to the area, if you do fish here and it starts to rain pack up immediately and get off, because if you don´t you will get stuck. Grua´s will not go off road to get you out. Top rods on the day 1st Ian (The Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the feeder using pellet with 9.52 kilo´s. 2nd Bill (The Master) Reade fishing the feeder using pellet and the waggler using tares with 7.12 kilo´s. 3rd Terry (Swing E´m) Screen fishing the whip using maggot for bleak and feeder using pellet with 6.02 kilo´s. PLEASE NOTE The club has some vacancies at present, if you are interested in joining please contact Derek Swann on 966 729 293 or 603 535 771. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS Supplied by Terry Screen The 6th round of the Winter League Cup was fished at the Embalsa de Argos on the 25th September. We are now desperately in need of rain as I have only once seen this Lake with

SAN MIGUEL G.S. VISIT LA FINCA Some of the SMGS winners pictured at La Finca

Salvador and his friendly team played host to over 30 members and guests from SMGS when we visited the testing course at La Finca, near Algorfa. A generally warm day was interspersed with very gusty periods especially on the more exposed parts of this open course. The greens are recovering well from their recent treatment but I’m sure like many more in the area, the green-keepers are regularly performing a rain dance. At the time of writing the well publicized rains heading our way are looking very imminent and by the time this has gone to print they might well have arrived. With only three players beating par, it left the vast majority to ponder over the après-golf drinks trying to put their finger firmly on the problem. “Greens were still a little slow and a bit bobbly,” was the favourite but “no run on the fairways,” and “the way the ball managed to bury itself in the semi-rough!” both came close in second and third…….as is usual “I played like a plonker!” was nowhere to be heard. It’s always nice to welcome a fresh band of visitors and this meeting was no exception with prizes going to three of them. Paul Griffin, playing off 6, came top of the shop with 38 points followed by Tom Evans (32) and Chris Hampton (28). Members finding the target

on the par 3’s were John Parker, Ivor Turkington, Chris Hamblett and Geoff Giddy who all headed home with sleeves of balls for the NTP prizes. Our thanks go to the management of La Finca for providing the green fee vouchers as prizes. One of these as well as the mounted putter which is the Captain’s trophy went to the best score of the day and winner of the silver category, Chris Hamblett with 39 points. Norman McBride (36) and Mark Busson (35) came in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Gold division was again headed up by Barry Roehrig who shot a very commendable 38 off his low handicap. Four players came in 5 shots behind him with 33 points and after quite a few minutes sorting out the count-back situation, 2nd place went to Phil Birtwistle and 3rd to Ivor Turkington. Commiserations, but a mention, for the other 33’ers, Ken Flaherty and Phil de Lacy. The “Abacus” award, the one that nobody sets out to win, was picked up by John Parker with a grand total of 20 points……”not too bad, John – it’s been won with a lot less than that!” For details of future meetings, visit www.smgs. org or give Barry a ring on 966 731 033. Visitors are always made more than welcome.

CORNISH PRIDE (LOS DOLSES).... Ten Pin Bowling League their Finnish team mates Matches played on September 25th The second week of our league season saw the return of some more of our league bowlers who had been hiding from the Spanish summer, especially our Finnish friends. BANDOLEROS, who started last season strongly, had a convincing 8-0 win against CARP-R-US, top bowler for Bandoleros was Jamie Brian (591) and for the Carps it was Bill Hogg (590). LOS LOBOS look like being the early draw specialists, with another 4-4 draw again this week, this time against CORNISH PRIDE. Highest scorer for L.L was Brian Blackburn (555), and for C.P. it was Bill Thorpe (551). The Mixers had their first defeat of the season (early for them), when they were beaten 6-2 by LUCKY STRIKE. Paul Kundiss had a 224 scratch game and a 630 hcp series for L.S. Top scorer for Mixers was Bosse Soderstrom with a 584 hcp series. HALL y DAY had two of

back, and they helped their team to another 8-0 win, this time against CABALLO NEGRO. Top scorer on their lanes was Heikki Suomi bowling for C.N. with a 599 hcp series. LOS BANDIDOS easily won the first two games of their match against BAR MOSQUITOS, who fought back strongly to win the last game, but L.B. held on to enough pins to win the match 6-2. Top bowler for L.B was Maurice Allen, 584 hcp series. Our new (German) team CRAZY PINS lost again, this time 8-0, to another new team SPLIT HAPPENS. Carlos Eilers, bowling in his very first league match, for C.P. had a superb 199 scratch game. Kjell Monsen bowling for S.H. had the highest scratch series in that match with a 592. All three of the TEAM FINLAND bowlers were in good form as they easily beat their opponents SPLASH 80. Jukka Koskinen the T.F. captain top scored on the night with a 255 scratch game and a 632 hcp series.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY............................................... Roda Golf Club - 24.09.12

What a lovely change it was to play on such a well kept course, the tees and fairways had plenty of grass on them and the greens were true and receptive, completely different from some the courses we have played recently. We had 38 members and guests playing on the day and they had only praise for the course and its condition, we cannot wait to play there again. The wind was blowing strongly but this did not seem to stop the accumulation of good scores. After a relaxing drink on the terrace we returned home happy. The scores on the doors were: Gold Division: 1st Bill Mackay 38pts, 2nd Nick Capasso 37pts (c/b last 6),

3rd Ray Brown 37pts Silver Division: 1st Alan Watson 36pts, 2nd Ian Carmichael 33pts, 3rd Mark Good 32pts Bronze Division: 1st Tony Ellis 33pts, 2nd Bill Acton 32pts, 3rd Paul Carter 31pts NTPs: Hole 7, Peter Morris, hole 11, Ian Carmichael and hole 13, Nick Capasso The 2s Club was shared between Nick Capasso and Mike Johnson, both receiving €34 Free game draw: Dicky Claeys The presentation was slightly different this time, as this was done in the evening before a meal given by David and Jose of the Lo Crispin Tavern followed by a quiz organised as usual by David Dodd who

also coordinated the whole evenings proceedings. For those who are interested our next full game is at Altorreal on the 10th October followed on the 31st October by a charity game for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. This will be played at Vistabella with a shot gun start and many prizes etc. Watch out for the posters for application to play as this competition will be open to non members as well. For non members email LCGSinfo@gmail.com for information. Finally a special message for Stan, get better soon mate. The course was in excellent condition, so it was only our own ability and the weather to contend with.

Marco strikes again.................................................. S.C.D Carolinas 0-1 C.F Sporting de San Fulgencio The Saints continued their stunning start to the season with an industrious victory over S.C.D Carolinas in Alicante. The tone for the game was set early on, with stray passes and wayward controls the theme of the contest as the conditions played their part. Both teams looked tense and nervous, but the hosts started the better as they started to apply some pressure on San Fulgencio’s back four. Carolina’s first chance of the game was a golden one, despite being in an offside position, the striker curled his strike wide when one on one with Manuel Llopis. San Fulgencio were presented with a great chance of their own, but Marco Aurelio held onto the ball for too long before

Fernando Mora sliced his half-volley past the post. After the break the visitors came out looking for an early goal, and they almost got it when Gary Williams was set through by Hector Silva, but his shot was well kept out by the keeper. The Saints were improving as the game went on, but they were limited to long range efforts as the well organised defence of the home side kept the visiting flair players quiet. It would take a moment of brilliance from the man of the moment to break the deadlock in this tight affair. After winning a free-kick in a dangerous position, Marco Aurelio dusted himself off, locked his target and bent a delightful strike beyond the reach of the sprawling goalkeeper. S.C.D Carolinas pushed on for an equaliser and they

were incredibly close to snatching a point, but center back Kino Rodriguez was in the right place to slide in and sweep the ball clear. As the hosts continued to attack, Giacomo Marcello did well to turn his marker and stride forward on the break for the visitors, but his tame shot was knocked away. C.F Sporting de San Fulencio held on for the three points and although they won’t be entirely happy with the performance, no one could have dreamed of a better start to this campaign. Our next game is a home fixture against C.D Cox on Sunday the 7th of October. Thank you to Telecom 900 and the rest of our sponsors. Match report by Jordan Lucas. www.sportingcf.es

CASAS MANUEL SUMMER PETANCA LEAGUE CUP FINAL AMAPOLAS vs LAGUNA VISTA DIABLOS by Sue Ward Well thats summer done and dusted. The weather has really cooled down and the summer petanca players have made it safely through the heat and are now taking a well earned break before the Las Salinas Winter League

begins in November. Last Wednesday at Restaurante El Altos de Dolores in La Mata saw the final of the League Cup Tournament and also the presentation of the magnificent glass vase to the league winners. The final got off to a good start for the perceived favourites - Amapolas winning the 1st 2 triples comfortably, 13-5 and 13-4.

39

Laguna Vista Diablos were not too disheartened though and fought back brilliantly by winning the next 2 triples, 1311 and 13-8. So it all came down to the 3 doubles. First Amapolis won 13-2, then Laguna Vista Diablos won 13-5, then everything rested on the last game which had all the spectators gathered each end of the piste all cheering and agonising over missed and fantastic shots. Laguna Vista Diablos won 13-4. The end result does not relate to the excitement or closeness of the final game. Laguna Vista Diablos were besides themselves with joy and celebrated well into the night. The team consisted of Ray, Eileen, Aide, Dot, Derek, John R, Victor, Russell and John H. Big congratulations to Laguna and thank you Amapolas for a good match. The league winners were Amigos Belgas whom happily received a large glass vase from Damon Haymes who represented the sponsors of the summer league, Casas Manuel. Thanks go to all the people who gave up their time and patience! to organise the league. It would not have run so smoothly without a lot of planning. Everyone is grateful to them. Casas Manuel sponsored the trophies and gave support where needed. Looking forward to another fun and friendly summer league in 2013.
