Almodovar says new film is unlike past works Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar said Friday his new movie which will take part at the Cannes Film Festival next month is unlike any other film which he has made so far. The movie, “La Piel Que Habito” (The Skin I Live In) starring Antonio Banderas, is a tale of revenge centred on a plastic surgeon who tracks down the man who raped his daughter and the complex relationship that ensues. “There is a distinct tone in the story and in the genre, I am not sure what genre it is since I blend them all up. It is very different from the rest of my cinematography,” Almodovar said during an interview with Spanish public radio. “It is the most austere movie which I have ever made. I am a bit embarassed to say it but I really like the movie we have made. It is a very complicated movie on paper.” “The Skin That I Inhabit”, Almodovar’s 18th feature-length film, will be among the 19 movies competing at the 64th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which runs from May 11- 22. It is based on the French crime novel “Mygale” by Thierry Jonquet. Almodovar won the award for best screenplay at Cannes in 2006 for “Volver” and received the best director prize at the festival in 1999 for “All About my Mother” but he has never won the top honour at the film festival.

Subsequent to Michael O’Leary’s forcefully expressed opinion on the subject of air bridges at Alicante’s new El Altet, and his unwillingness to pay up to 2 million euros for their installation, Air Berlin has stepped up to the mark, announcing that it would be interested in taking over the empty slots, should Michael O’Leary fulfill his threat to pull RyanAir out of the airport. The loss of RyanAir could see sizeable reduction of air traffic to the airport, but it is thought unlikely that this figure could be completely recovered by Air Berlin.

From Good Friday there will be an extra 50 firefighters deployed in the Murcia area. They will cover the Easter processions to be held in the city of Murcia between 15 and 24 April (inclusive). The numbers will be made up of 10 corporals, 30 firefighters and 10 drivers. On Friday 22 April (Good Friday) from 08:00 for the procession in the morning and from 18:30 in the afternoon a tender will be on Gran Vía Escultor Salzillo, and the corner of Calle Madre de Dios. On Saturday, April 23 (Holy Saturday) from 19:00 a tender will be in Plaza Fontes. On Sunday 24 April (Easter Sunday) from 08:15 a tender will be on Calle Salzillo next to the Soportales de la Catedral, (Cathedral Arches).

Alicante Airport To Torrevieja bus service proposed

This looks likely to happen as from the end of the month! Sealed bids from two companies are being scrutinized, and it is hoped that the service will be up and running for next month. The basic plan is for the direct public transport service to run 365 days a year and provide 12 return journeys between the airport and Torrevieja, with

additional return journeys at peak times of the year. The cost of a single journey has been estimated at 7€ per person. Buses will run from Torrevieja’s bus station from 7.30am until 10.30pm during the low season and until midnight during the summer months. The busses will take an inland route of approximately 65km,

Crackdown on cash-in-hand work

Spain’s government has announced a zero-tolerance crackdown on the so-called ‘submerged economy’, and will be targeting both sole traders and companies in its bid to wipe out working ‘on the black’. This is partially to protect workers – particularly vulnerable society groups such as non-EU immigrants – from slave-like conditions with no legal rights or social security to fall back on due to being employed for cash in hand with no contracts. But it is also a bid to claw back taxes and social security that people are not paying. The ministry has announced it will be particularly harsh with people who are on the

dole but working ‘on the black’ at the same time, and threaten fines ranging from 12,000 euros up to more than half a million. It would also lead to these people’s dole money being stopped. Yet for most people who claim dole and work for cash, this is a question of survival – when their dole money eventually runs out, they may still not have found a job, and will have to rely on money they have put aside in the meantime. Inspections into the affairs of potential offenders will start imminently and be concluded by the spring of 2012.

following the CV-905 and the A-7 motorway, and avoiding the N-332 coastal road, which is prone to congestion and slower driving speeds. There is also a new local bus service running through the urbanisations of Mar Azul and La Veleta in Torrevieja. Bus access to the urbanisations is from the new roundabout and through Avenida

del Pacífico, Calle Juan Sebastián El Cano, Avenida Conquistadores, Avenida Juan de Austria and Calle Churruca. This has necessitated the installation of two new bus stops. They are on the Avenida Conquistadores and Avenida Juan de Austria, next to the ‘Nuevo Amanecer’ school.

Authorities outlaw “atheist” Easter procession

The Government Delegation in Madrid has today banned an “atheist procession” being planned by various social groups for Maundy Thursday, having decided that it will be in conflict with the traditional Holy Week procession, a decision the organisers have described as “erroneous” and which they intend to contest. The march, which was originally planned as a ceremony and later formalised as a demonstration has been organized by groups such as the Madrid Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (AMAL), Ateos en Lucha and the Lavapiés Beach Neighbourhood Association. These groups had planned their march for the evening of Maundy Thursday, but the Delegation of the

Government has banned the march, arguing that it coincides with the traditional processions and the authorities are unanimous in their disapproval of the event. The president of the Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre applauded the decision, saying it was wrong for people to be “free to offend the Catholics”, and the mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon also welcomed the ban, saying the march would have been a “provocation”. The Madrid Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (AMAL) has announced its intention to appeal the ban, saying the authorities’ arguments are “inaccurate” and “basically the same as those being voiced by fundamentalist Catholic groups”.

The General Director of Planning, Evaluation and Environmental Control, Francisco Espejo, has fronted a campaign for the collection of used batteries discarded during the processions in Cartagena. This is the fourth year that this will take place. Since 2008 over 2 tons of batteries have been collected. According to Francisco Espejo, even a single battery, disposed of incorrectly, can contaminate up to 100,000 litres of water. Over the next 40 days, Cartagena will have 5 special containers installed in the procession routes and warehouses of the brotherhoods, to facilitate the recycling of more than 12,000 batteries estimated to be used by those connected with the processions during the Easter celebrations. The Batteries deposited in these containers will be collected by the company and transported to the EcoPark Lhicarsa Cartagena for proper treatment. They are crushed for scrap iron and non iron, paper and plastics, which are then recovered. The left over powder is subjected to various processes to recover the metals contained therein. In a move towards environmental responsibility the Cartagena Guilds are replacing incandescent bulbs with LED light emitting semiconductor diodes that offer important advantages such as lower power consumption and longer life. These LED lamps do not require a battery pack, as do the incandescent bulbs, but instead use AAA batteries, which are easily recyclable.

Spain jobless total ‘could pass 5m’, says labour minister Valeriano Gomez The number of unemployed in Spain, which has the highest jobless rate among developed countries, could reach a record of more than 5m, the labour minister has warned.

“Whether or not we exceed 5m unemployed will depend on the active population,” Valeriano Gomez told the business daily el Economista, referring to a possible rise in the working-age population. “It must be said that in Spain during the crisis, the workforce has been very erratic.” Spain’s booming construction industry drew millions of unskilled immigrant workers and generated high levels of economic growth in the decade to 2008. But the collapse of the property bubble, compounded by the global financial crisis, left many people out of work, especially immigrants and youths. The unemployment rate soared to 20.33pc at the end of 2010, the highest in the

Petrol prices reach all time high! They rose by 0,45% in the last week, making them at an all time high for Spain. The price of both petrol and diesel has now gone up for nine consecutive months. The Government has responded by the introduction of the new speed limit on motorways (110 kmh instead of 120 kmh), and reducing the price of RENFE train tickets. They hope that this will assist in a reduction of 5% in Spain’s energy bill, which currently stands at 2,300 million euros per year.

A Spanish GP who opposes abortion has been refused the status of “conscientious objector” in a landmark ruling in Spain

The unnamed family doctor from a public medical centre in Antequera in southern Spain tried to register as a conscience objector arguing that he could not give referrals to pregnant women seeking terminations. But a judge at a court in Malaga rejected the application considering that as a public employee the doctor’s “duty to provide adequate health care prevailed over that of conscience”. Abortion was fully legalised in Spain last year under a new law brought in by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero’s socialist government. The Abortion Act contains a provision for medical professionals to refuse to carry out terminations “for reasons of conscience.” But it extends only to those who are performing the abortions, the judge argued, and not those expected to provide advice on how to get one. The case was the first of its kind to be heard

The problem was that an undisclosed amount of tax had not been paid by the British company running the tribute. Spanish anti-abortion GP refused ‘conscientious objector’ status in Spain. According to reports hundreds of health care professionals have registered for “conscientious objector” status since the law was introduced in July 2010. The new law allows abortion-on-demand in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy and up to 22 weeks if there is threat to the life or health of the mother, but brought strong opposition from conservatives and the Catholic Church. Before its introduction abortions were offered under restricted circumstances and rarely in a public hospital. Terminations were allowed only until the 12th week of pregnancy in cases of rape or until the 24 weeks if a woman’s mental or physical health was in danger. The vast majority of the 115,000 abortions carried out in 2009 took place at private clinics and were justified on the grounds that the pregnancy posed a “psychological risk” for the health of the woman. appeared and demanded that the tables and chairs be removed. To emphasise that they meant business, fines from the Dirección General de Costas are to follow these infractions. In future all proprietors must be careful that their tables and chairs do not overspill their designated areas, and end up on the ‘wrong side of the law!’

The week end before the Easter Holidays, which is usually quiet for the tourist trade along the coast, was given an unexpected boost by the sudden hot temperatures. Many areas saw temperatures in excess of 36 degrees, which encouraged visitors from all over the Spanish mainland to flock to the coast, and even to brave the sea to cool off. Beaches were packed, with sunbeds in short supply due to the unexpectedly large crowds. Bars and cafes were full, ice cream sales rocketed, and many of the smaller supermarkets ran short of ice as the weekend continued to swelter. Hotels reported full occupancy, with the greater number of their rooms sold to customers booking last minute for short breaks. However, inland resorts reported a lower than average take up in accommodation.

Cervantes character star of the stage in Shakespeare’s birthplace “Double Falsehood”, the Shakespeare play inspired by Cardenio, one of the characters in Cervantes’ “Don Quixote”, was performed for the first time in Stratford-upon-Avon, the bard’s birthplace, last week.

The play was first performed in 1727, but presented by the theatrical empresario Lewis Theobald as an “adaptation” of Shakespeare, as the authorship of the work was the source of much controversy for many years. Last year, experts finally concluded that “Double Falsehood” was written jointly by Shakespeare and his contemporary John Fletcher. The Royal Shakespeare Company has put together this production to be performed in the poet and playwright’s birthplace three centuries after Theobald confirmed that he had in his possession three different manuscripts of a work entitled “The History of Cardenio”, based on a section of Don Quixote and then subsequently lost, allegedly in a fire. The first part of “Don Quijote de la Mancha” had been translated into English in 1612 by John Shelton, and the Cardenio episode inspired this joint work by Shakespeare and Fletcher, which was performed in London the following year. Leopald explined that “Double Falsehood” was the

Spain sees tourism jump due to Arab revolts

Activity in Spain’s tourism sector jumped 2.4 percent in the first quarter of the year as sunseekers shunned rival resorts in Egypt and Tunisia because of anti-government uprisings there, a trade association said this week.

result of an amalgamation of the three manuscripts, one of which was written jointly by Shakespeare and Fletcher. Shakespeare scholar Brean Hammond confirms that the bard’s style is very evident in the first two acts and part of the third. The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is celebrating

its 50th anniversary this year and “Double Falsehood” is one of the highlights in a programme of nine new works to be performed at two different venues: the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Teatre, both in Stratford-upon Avon, where Shakespeare was born.

The Canary Islands archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and major cities on the mainland were the main beneficiares, thanks to the recovery of business tourism and to foreigners taking short breaks, the Exceltur umbrella tourism trade association said. There was “a notable increase of 2.4 percent of tourism GDP in the first quarter, the biggest increase of all the sectors of the economy,” it said. “The strong and unexpected surge in activity is mainly due to the current redirection of overseas demand from Egypt and Tunisia, which has benefited the Canaries almost exclusively.” Predictions of continued instability in the eastern Mediterranean “augurs well for the second quarter in coastal areas of Spain

linked to foreign demand,” it said. As a result, Exceltur said it was raising its tourism sector 2011 growth forecast 2.2 percent, almost double its January estimate. Spain has struggled in recent years to compete with beach destinations in Egypt’s Red Sea and Tunisia’s Mediterranean coast which are cheaper and of a similar flying distance from its key markets like Germany and Britain. But since the unrest sweeping the Arab world began in Tunisia in early January, tourists have been changing their travel plans and many have opted for the Canary Islands which tend to offer all inclusive packages like those in the seaside resorts of Tunisia and Egypt. Spain slipped from third to fourth place among the world’s most visited countries in 2010, behind France, the United States and China, according to figures from the UN World Tourism Organisation. Telefonica to cut workforce in Spain by 20% Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica said it plans to cut its workforce in Spain by about 20%, or some 6,000 people, over the next three years as a costcutting measure

The company will also link pay and benefits more to employees’ productivity rather than the inflation rate, it said in a presentation to investors in London that was posted on the company’s website. The head of the group’s business in Spain, Guillermo Ansaldo, said the job cuts would allow the company to gain “flexibility”. Telefonica employs some 30,000 people in Spain out of a total global workforce of 269,000 people. The announcement of the job cuts by the former state monopoly is grim news for a country already grappling with an unemployment rate of just over 20 percent, the highest level in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Earlier this month the government lifted its forecast for unemployment this year to 19.8 percent from 19.3 percent

previously. “It is not a good moment to carry out staff adjustments of such a significant size,” said Labour Minister Valeriano Gomez. Telefonica also said it plans to sell “non strategic assets”, mostly real estate, in the 201113 period worth 600 million euros ($870 million). Telefonica posted a record 2010 net profit of 10.2 billion euros, a 30.8 percent jump over the previous year as weakness in Spain was offset by strong growth in the rest of Europe and Latin America. The company’s revenues in Spain were down by five percent last year. Earlier Thursday Britain’s Dixons Retail, Europe’s number two electrical goods retailer which runs PC World stores, said it was closing its 34 lossmaking outlets in Spain due to weak consumer demand in the country.

Spain police net biggest ever ETA arms cache The biggest ever arms cache at an ETA safe house has been found by Spanish police in a raid that recovered almost 2,000lb of bomb making equipment

The discovery raised concerns that a splinter group of the violent separatist group ETA was planning to break its seven-month ceasefire with an attack in Spain. Security forces seized bomb making equipment including 1,870lb of the agricultural fertiliser, ammonium nitrate, and detonators at a farmhouse in the Guipúzcoa village of Legorreta. Two brothers from the town near the border with France were arrested and identified as Jose Aitor Esnaola, 40, and Igor Esnaola, 36, an interior ministry statement said. The pair are suspected of supplying weapons and explosives to the terrorist group and had been named in documents discovered in previous raids against ETA. Last weekend, French police detained two of the most-wanted ETA suspects after an exchange of gunfire in which a police officer was injured. The two incidents have raised concerns

that a ceasefire declared by ETA last September and made “permanent” in January, was to be called off. ETA broke its previous “permanent ceasefire”, declared in March 2006, with a car bomb at Madrid airport in December

2006 that killed two people. Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero, Spain’s Prime Minister, said the government was committed to continuing the fight “to reduce the possibilities” of any violent action.

Inquisition over Prince William’s ‘snub’ to Crown Prince Felipe of Spain

When the Prince of Wales was told by Crown Prince Felipe of Spain at a gala dinner in Madrid last week that a solution must be found for Gibraltar, there was great surprise at why a centuries–old dispute had been stirred up. Mandrake can disclose that the heir to the Spanish throne was, however, acutely aware of a diplomatic incident even closer to home. Felipe had learnt that he and his wife, Princess Letizia were not invited to the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. “It is extraordinary,” a Spanish official told me “Only King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were invited.” What made the snub to Felipe — who, like Prince Charles, is a great–great-great–grandson of Queen Victoria — even more surprising is that space had been found at Westminster Abbey for the owner of a Spanish tile company

5

who donated generously to Charles’s charities, Manuel Colonques, and his wife, Delfina. His firm, Porcelanosa, met a “significant proportion” of the costs of a lavish charity dinner at Buckingham Palace in February. Charles was a guest of honour at the wedding of Felipe and Letizia, a divorced television newsreader, in Madrid in 2004. He attended both the ceremony and the sumptuous banquet that followed. On Friday, St James’s Palace confirmed that only the king and queen had been invited. “You would need to check with the Spanish royal household as to who they have opted to attend,” the official said. That night, however, a nervous courtier suggested that Charles had asked for Felipe and Letizia to be added to the guest list.

After the success of his last meetings in China with some of Asia’s biggest investors, and after a six-hour flight, Zapatero will now embark upon the second stage of his tour. His first meting was to be with Singapore’s former prime minister and current Minister Mentor, Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of this small, but propserous state; and afterwards he will meet with the prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, who will be hosting a dinner in his honour. According to information from Spanish government officials, the leaders are expected to sign a an agreement to promote cultural cooperation, and

an important treaty that will eliminate double taxation for companies. Zapatero will make a point of explaining the reforms undertaken by his government to further the country’s economic recovery, with the aim of attracting investors from Singapore, which has the third highest per capita income in the world and whose economy grew 14.5% last year. Tomorrow, Zapatero will have a working breakfast with the heads of the country’s main banks and investment funds before flying back to China to take part in the annual Boao Forum for Asia on the island of Hainan, where he will meet with the Chinese president, Hu Jintao, and heads of state of the leading emerging markets - Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa - who will be holding a parallel conference at the same time.

THE OLIVE BRANCH CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP IS ON THE MOVE.....

You are warmly invited to join us at our new venue in the Cultural Centre on Camposol B. Our First service in the new building is on Easter Sunday 24th April at 10.30am. There would be no Easter without Jesus, remember the eggs were originally to signify the stone rolled away from the tomb Jesus had been put in three days earlier. If your experience of “church” is only through Christenings, Weddings and Funerals you need to see how different the Olive Branch Christian Fellowship is. We aim to give a warm and friendly welcome to everyone and have been referred to as the ‘Happy Clappy Group’ probably because our service is lively but still reverent as we worship an Almighty God. We are a Bible based fellowship and take time to have Communion each week as we remember Jesus died for us. Of course we also celebrate the fact that Jesus rose from the tomb and we can have, not a religion , but a relationship with Him in our lives every day and not just at Easter! WHY NOT come along and see for yourself? I am sure you will be encouraged and better equipped to tackle the problems life can throw at us. We would love to see YOU there. Leopard thinks he’s a meerkat

A safari guide thought he was seeing things when he spotted a leopard acting like a meerkat.

The big cat in question had been carefully stalking a warthog when its prey disappeared into some particularly long grass. In order to keeps its dinner in sight, every few minutes the leopard would balance expertly on its hind legs doing an excellent meerkat impersonation - and peer over

the grass.

The bizarre spectacle was caught on camera by 27-yearold Letsogile Kamogelo at Savuti Camp in the Linyanti Game Reserve, Botswana. Mr Kamogelo, who works as a safari guide, said he had never heard of a leopard behaving in such a way. He explained: “This leopard had spotted a warthog from a distance and stalked it for almost an hour. “He kept a reasonable distance from his prey but he lost sight of the warthog when it went in to tall grass. “He lifted himself up for at least 45 seconds to a minute at a time. I don’t think he was comfortable holding the position for any longer. “He was very careful whenever he stood up because he didn’t want to fall on his back. This is a very unusual behaviour and I have never heard or read about it before. “There is a lot of animal behaviour that has not been recorded and it is mostly influenced by the type of terrain. The animal has to respond to the changes within its environment and it may display unusual behaviour like this.”

A Devon farmer has dyed his entire flock of 250 sheep orange to stop rustlers stealing them. John Heard had lost 200 of his blackface ewes over the past few years - but the thefts stopped as soon as he dipped then in the harmless dye. Mr Heard, 48, of Okehampton, said: “Sheep rustling has become a big problem with ewes worth around £140 each. My flock roams Dartmoor and I was getting fed-up losing them. “My son James suggested the orange dye and although it produces some strange-looking sheep it has done the trick and I haven’t lost one this year. “It works because they are so easy to distinguish making it easier for me and my neighbours to keep a wary eye out for

them. Plus the rustlers are obviously nervous about stealing such easily distinguished animals.” The dye eventually wears off with no side effects for the animals but has caused bemused reactions from onlookers. Mr Heard added: “Other farmers as well as a fair few ramblers have been shocked but others have said they are now willing to try the idea if it works. “At the moment it is doing exactly what I hoped it would and stopping the rustlers in their tracks.” There has been a five-fold increase in sheep thefts this year and a spokeswoman for the National Farmer’s Union commented: “In the circumstances orange sheep seem like a very good idea.”

Now, Luna understands commands such as ‘go’, ‘stand’ and ‘gallop’ - when she feels like it. A teenager whose parents refused to buy her a horse didn’t give up her dream - she taught a cow to showjump instead. Hours of training and tons of treats, cajoling and caresses later, the results of Regina Mayer’s efforts with Luna are impressive. The pair regularly go on long rides through the German countryside - and also hurdle over makeshift

Regina said of her first ride: “She was really well behaved and walked normally. But after a couple of metres she wanted me to get off. You could see that she got a bit peeved. “It’s a lot of work, but I enjoy it. When she wants to do something she does it, when she doesn’t, she doesn’t. And she is often very headstrong but can also be really adorable.”

fast update..........................

In the past few weeks the FAST committee have been busy recruiting volunteers and training them ready for service. In addition to that setting up operational protocols, the training package and safety rules that will ensure that all within fast work within guidelines that will protect them and the community. All laborious work but highly necessary in order to ensure FAST do the best they can for everyone in Camposol. We are pleased to report that work is going well and that in the near future we will be able to confirm a start date SURVIVAL! The statistics in survival rates make powerful reading and show the size of the problem we face. For example survival rates of people suffering a cardiac arrest with no help are between 3% & 5% which is worryingly low. Even more of a concern is in the first 10 minutes following the heart stopping the chances of survival diminish at a rate of 7% - 10% per minute which is why we are working hard for you to provide the FAST

service to bridge the gap between calling 112 and an ambulance arriving. The task we face is a tough one as the statistics above show as in many cases the patient may not be able to be helped. We must underline the fact that we are FAST (First Aid Support Team) and whilst we will do our very best to reach the patient within 8 minutes and give the best support we can to help until the ambulance arrives, we are not professionals and we will have limits in both skills & equipment. It is likely for example that we will have to commence the service without defibrillators or Oxygen therapy (the two things that give the greatest impact on helping victims of cardiac arrest) due to the complexities of securing and delivering the training but be assured we are working very hard to ensure this is achieved as soon as is possible. Nevertheless, good old basic CPR (Chest compressions and mouth to mouth) does ensure that circulation continues and life giving oxygen still gets to the brain and tissues. However that said, having such a service in Britain has proven to be invaluable and lives are being saved every day, despite the fact that many cannot be helped. Almost as important are the needs of the relatives or partner as it can be a very traumatic time for them and part of our goal is to ensure that they receive support when it is most needed. So between now and the start date we will be working with the volunteer responders to build the team and they will be doing homework to learn all the protocols, rules and disciplines of being a responder. What can you do to help yourself in the meantime?? Well, you can look after yourself by taking regular exercise as recommended by your Doctor, eating your five a day fruit and vegetables, reducing bad saturated fats and excessive salt in your diet. With the hot season coming drink plenty of water

and reduce alcohol volumes (very important in the hot weather!!). See your doctor for a check-up and follow their advice taking your medications exactly as prescribed!

And finally help us to help you! Funding is becoming a necessity despite the fact that all responders and committee are unpaid volunteers and that PALS have given us immeasurable support in funding the trauma packs and similar equipment. The cost of printing training materials and other associated items can be quite costly, so if you can help us please either support us at the Camposol Fiesta, or donate at the The Tea Pot in the Port or contact us at the points below, remember every little helps us to help you or your loved one! Remember to look out for further communications in the key media points such as www.simplynetworking. com, Sol Times, Costa Calida Chronicle, Costa Calida Radio. All of whom have helped FAST immensely. So, keep safe and look after yourself, have an emergency plan with your neighbours - yes talk to them! We all may need help sometime!

spotlight on business... Spain says risk premium surge ‘not too important’

Euro drops against the dollar The euro fell one per cent today to $1.4287 against the dollar, its weakest since April 7th when the European Central Bank raised interest rates. This is the worst one-day drop for the euro against the dollar since November and came amid mounting concern that Greece will be forced to restructure its debt and uncertainty about Portugal’s bailout after a strong showing by a euro-sceptic party in Finnish elections. Finnish voters handed the anti-euro True Finns party a crucial role in parliament and possibly a path into government, as Finland’s parliament has the right to vote on European Union requests for bailout funds. Therefore it could hold up plans regarding Portugal and stability to debt markets. On the bond markets, Portuguese, Spanish and other lower-rated eurozone government debt came under pressure. Standard & Poor’s revised its outlook on the United States’ long-term rating to negative from stable, but affirmed its ‘AAA/A-1+’ sovereign credit rating. An actual ratings downgrade of U.S. debt would be negative for the U.S. dollar, but most believe S&P’s announcement was a warning and therefore did little to affect the dollar’s performance against the euro.

Spain was forced to pay sharply higher rates than a month A surge in the risk premium paid for earlier when it raised 4.66 billion euros ($6.6 billion) in 12- and Spain’s latest multi-billion-euro debt 18-month bills in an auction on Monday. issue was “not too important,” Finance But in the context of Spain’s overall debt issuance, “a peak of Minister Elena Salgado said. several extra points at the time of an issue is not too important,” Salgado told the radio Cadena Ser. “In fact the interest-rate burden on Spanish public debt is among the lightest in Europe,” she said. Spain has been swept up in the latest wave of concern over sovereign debt, propelled by Portugal requesting a bailout April 6 and then by Standard & Poor’s warning Monday it may downgrade US debt. Greece and then Ireland were bailed out by the European Union and International Monetary Fund last year when investors concerned about their high debts demanded punishingly high rates in return for loans. Spain, whose economy is the size of Greece, Ireland and Portugal’s combined, has been battling to convince markets that it should not be lumped together with its less fortunate INTERIOR AND partners. Salgado said the yield on Spanish public debt began to rise on Thursday on concerns about the possibility of a restructuring of Greek debt. Strong gains in Finland’s weekend elections by the right-wing True Finns who oppose EU bailouts added to the doubts, she added. “All this has affected several countries’ debt -- Spain’s but also Belgium’s,” Salgado said. ‘Universal’ cancer jab health Vaccine that stops all tumours in their tracks could be here in two years

A ‘universal’ vaccine that could revolutionise the treatment of cancer could be available in just two years. The TeloVac jab is part of a new generation of drugs that use the body’s own defences to fight the disease, stopping tumours in their tracks. TeloVac has already been given to hundreds of Britons with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease. But it is hoped it will be effective against many other tumours, including those of the skin, lung and liver. Breast and prostate cancers may also be within its grasp. Together, the six forms of the disease claim more 70,000

immune system to seek out and destroy an enzyme called telomerase. Found at high levels in many cancer cells, telomerase effectively makes them immortal, allowing them to live on when healthy cells would die – easing the growth and spread of the tumour. In the largest trial of its kind in the UK, more than 1,000 men and women in the late stages of pancreatic cancer are either being given the vaccine alongside their normal drugs or treated as usual. The results from the 53 hospitals taking part will not be available until next year but, anecdotally, some patients credit their participation in the trial with giving them an extra year or two of life. In earlier, smaller trials, the vaccine gave those in the late stages of the disease an average of an extra three months. John Neoptolemos, who is co-ordinating the large-scale British trial, said: ‘When you have got pancreatic cancer, it is like a timebomb in people.’ Pancreatic cancer cells are normally invisible to the immune system but the vaccine ‘spots’ the telomerase spilling out from them and kick-starts the fight back. Professor Neoptolemos, of Liverpool University, said: ‘It is like the immune system has a blindfold on and the vaccine takes the blindfold off.’ Healthy cells escape the attack because their levels of telomerase are too low to bother the immune system. This cuts the risk of sideeffects such as nausea and hair loss normally seen with cancer drugs. If the latest study, which is funded by Cancer Research UK, proves the jab’s worth, it could be available to treat advanced pancreatic cancer by the end of 2013. In time, it could be used earlier in the disease – and even to prevent it. Dr Jay Sangjae Kim, the founder of GemVax, the Korean company developing the TeloVac vaccine, said: ‘We strongly believe this has the potential to overcome the limits of other current cancer vaccines and become part of the standard of care not only for pancreatic cancer but for various other types of cancers. ‘In other words, a truly “universal” vaccine will be available in the near future.’ Professor Peter Johnson, of Cancer Research UK, said: ‘We await the results with interest to see if this is an effective treatment.’

How four apples a day can cut cholesterol by a quarter Apples could help us to improve cholesterol levels and lose weight, say researchers.

They found that women who ate 75g of dried apple a day for six months saw levels of LDL cholesterol – the harmful form blamed for clogging arteries – fall by almost a quarter. Levels of other compounds linked to heart disease and strokes also dropped, and amounts of HDL cholesterol, the ‘good’ kind which wards off the hardening of blood vessels, rose by about 4 per cent. The women also lost an average of just over 3lb in weight, despite taking on an additional 240 calories a day from snacking on the fruit. The cholesterol benefits are said to have been triggered by apples’ antioxidants, while the slimming effect has been attributed to a compound which can suppress appetites. Pectin is often used to help jams set, and high levels are also found in apricots, carrots and citrus fruits. Getting the equivalent benefits from fresh apples would require eating four or five a day. Researcher Dr Bahram Arjmandi of Florida State University said he ‘never expected apple consumption to reduce bad cholesterol to this extent’, adding that the results were ‘incredible’.

Although the tests focused on dry fruit, help is at hand for fans of the fresh variety with the recent decoding of the apple’s genetic code, paving the way for crunchier, juicer and healthier produce.

This development allowed the apple to adapt to tougher conditions and sent it along a different evolutionary path from peaches, raspberries, strawberries and other related fruits.

Dr Arjmandi told the Experimental Biology conference in Washington: ‘Everyone can benefit from consuming apples.’

The research suggests that around 65 million years ago, when a comet is thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs, the plant that would eventually give rise to the apple tree underwent a massive and rapid change in which many of its genes were duplicated.

Swimmer-songwriters Whales have their own tunes that spread around the world ‘like hit singles

When Lady Gaga releases a catchy new single, it quickly goes around the world. Now scientists have discovered the same thing happens with the songs of another exotic creature – the humpback whale. The mammals become fixated on new tunes just like people do, and the most popular original whale songs spread globally like hit singles. The discovery has stunned marine experts who say it is the first time such a large, ‘population wide cultural exchange’ has been seen in the animal kingdom. Male humpback whales are famed for the loud, long and complex songs they make during the mating season. Scientists are unsure why the males sing. Some believe it is a way of advertising themselves to females, others that it allows migrating whales to stay in contact. Each song lasts for ten to 20 minutes and the males can sing continuously for 24 hours. At any one time, all the males

in a population sing the same song. But a study, published in the journal Current Biology, shows that this song changes over time and spreads around the oceans. Dr Ellen Garland, of Queensland University, said: ‘Our findings reveal cultural change on a vast scale. Songs move like cultural ripples from one population to another, causing all males to change their song to a new version.’ Researchers recorded songs from six neighbouring populations of whales in the Pacific over a decade. They found that new versions of the songs appear over time and always spread from west to east. It takes two years for songs that appear in the waters off Australia to be heard in French Polynesia. Dr Garland believes that a small number of whales may migrate to other populations carrying the new songs with them, or that they are heard by passing whales. Most of the new songs contain material from the previous year blended with something new. ‘It would be like splicing an old Beatles song with U2,’ she said. ‘Occasionally they completely throw the current song out of the window and start singing a brand new song.’ The researchers suspect whales adopt new songs to make themselves distinct. Dr Garland said: ‘We think this male quest for song novelty is in the hope of being that little bit different and perhaps more attractive to the opposite sex. This is then countered by the urge to sing the same tune, by the need to conform.’

First commercial jetpack is ‘just months away’

...after record-breaking 7 minute test flight It has been the stuff of sciencefiction legend for generations, but the era of futuristic personal spaceage travel may have finally dawned. After completing a gruelling seven-minute outside test flight, the longest ever by a jetpack, the world’s first commercial rocketman suit could be just months from hitting the shelves. Reaching death-defying altitudes of more than 100ft, the Martin Jetpack’s flight last week brought 40 years of development near to a conclusion and the dreams of millions achingly close to reality. Although limited to speeds well below its 60mph capacity, the remotely controlled test, using a weighted dummy pilot called Jetson, smashed records for altitude and air-time. At its unveiling at a U.S. airshow in 2008, the aircraft did not go higher than 6ft - an arm’s reach from a watchful ground crew - or fly for longer than 45 seconds. Given the success of the trial, the first ‘jet-ski in the sky’ could now be dispatched for solo flights by the end of the year at a price of around £50,000 ($75,000) per machine. Designed to be the ‘simplest aircraft in the world’ the Martin Jetpack will be a breeze to fly, according to inventor Glenn Martin. He said: ‘You just strap it on and rev the nuts out of it and it lifts you up off the ground. ‘It’s just basic physics. As Newton said, for every action there is an

equal and opposite reaction. So when you shoot lots of air down very fast you go up and you’re flying.’ Mr Martin says 2,500 people have already signed up for to buy the jetpack, with inquiries coming from Middle Eastern royalty and U.S. millionaires. The two-litre 200-horsepower gasoline engine powers two ducted fans that can soar across the skies at 60mph at heights of up to 160ft. The jetpack, which produces up to 6000rpm (revolutions per minute), carries enough fuel to fly for 30 minutes. Its makers are targeting tourism joy flights, pilot training and private recreational sales. ‘Some just want to dodge the rush-hour traffic and do it in style’, Mr Martin said. But the invention’s immediate deployment is likely to be as a ground-breaking defence tool with the U.S. military, which first tested jetpacks in the 1960s, and U.S. border control the first organisations to take delivery of the device. Mr Martin, a 50-year-old father of two, sees the military version of the jetpack being used in hard-to-access areas, war zones to patrol borders and, if unmanned, to make difficult deliveries by remote control. It could also be used in counter terrorism operations, as an airborne missile platform and mobile surveillance unit.

Quick pint?

Now you can take your time as scientists unveil how to keep beer fresher for longer There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a nice cold beer, but now drinkers may have another reason to raise their glasses in cheer. After much painstaking ‘research’, the secret to the perfect pint may finally have been discovered. For the first time, researchers have identified the main substances that cause the bitter, harsh after-taste of aged beer and suggest that preventing the formation of these substances could help extend its freshness. The findings, in American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, mean beer drinkers everywhere could enjoy their favourite brew for longer. CARLOS (SALIENTE)

LEGAL ADVICE FROM SERFILA ANDALUSIAN GOVERNMENT MAKES INHERITANCE EXEMPT TO €175.000

From 2009, the Andalusian regional government, the Junta de Andalucía, has made inheritance tax exempt up to the first €175.000 when passed to direct family. Unfortunately for non-resident property owners, this exemption applies only to residents of Andalusia. Both the deceased and the inheritor must be residents. The same rule, in fact, applies to Spaniards. They must be resident in Andalusia, not in some other part of Spain. For a better understanding I will explain it with an example: If a non-resident leaves his holiday flat in Spain to his two children, also non-residents, the heirs must pay according to the basic national law. This means a miserable family exemption of 16.000 euros. If a flat was valued at 200.000 euros, each child inherits 100.000 euros. Each applies his exemption of 16.000 euros and faces tax on 84.000 euros. This tax amounts to about 10.000 euros of each inheritor. If the deceased lived as an official resident in Andalusia, had owned his principal residence here for three years, and left it to two children who were also residents, the exemption would be 99 per cent, meaning that the inheritors would pay no tax at all. THE SHORT WARNING IS: 1.- If you are non-resident in Spain your Spanish property will almost certainly be subject to Spanish inheritance tax. Plan for it now, and get your Residence Certificate. 2.- Make a Spanish will. Make this will the same day you buy a property in Spain. It will save your inheritors time, trouble and expense.

China Still Eyeing Spanish

China is interested in investing in Spain’s savings banks, a Spanish source said on Thursday, brushing off a denial from Beijing as markets braced for news of how the ailing lenders plan to plug funding gaps. China Investment Corp, the country’s sovereign wealth fund, said earlier it was not considering a $9 billion investment, after another Spanish source said China may inject a total of $13 billion into the banks, known as cajas. “This was an error in communication. There is a will to invest in the savings banks and Spanish debt … but clearly we can’t give specific amounts or name particular funds,” the second source — like the first, within government — said. A CIC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters earlier in Beijing: “The reports are groundless and are not in line with the truth.” Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is visiting China and Singapore this week, meeting with officials and fund managers to persuade them that Spain’s sovereign bonds and its financial system are a good investment. The property market in Spain has now stabilised and there has never been a better time for buying property here. If you have the cash or finance available, it´s definitely a buyer’s market. Wherever you look in Spain there are bargain properties to be found for holiday homes, permanent residence or investment. Bank of Spain’s nt on savings plans to raise will give investors er picture of how an to refinance ves.

The central bank has said the cajas would need up to 15 billion euros ($21.7 billion) to recapitalise according to strict new solvency rules. The cost to insure their debt against default rose on Thursday, though one analyst said the widening of CDS spreads was due to external worries and called results by Bankinter and ECB borrowing figures “credit positive.” “We would attribute market concerns on Greece as a possible driver of Spanish caja CDS widening as peripheral risk aversion increases,” an analyst at Societe Generale, Hank Calenti, said. A recent improvement in refinancing costs for the Spanish sovereign has opened the door for banks, mostly shut out of wholesale markets through 2010, searching for funding alternatives. Spanish banks’ borrowing from the European Central Bank fell to its lowest level in over three years, data from the Bank of Spain showed on Thursday. The banks’ struggle to secure funds has led many to engage in a deposit war to capture retail accounts which, coupled with increased provisioning against bad debts, has hit bottom lines.

A HAIRY TALE...............

Somebody asked me the other day, if I could sum up the 60’s and 70’s in one word, what would it be. There was no hesitation on my part, and although I had never thought this through in advance, I said ‘Hair!’. Look, when the 60’s thing kicked off, it was pretty much ‘The Beatles’ who started the ball rolling and it was those distinctive ‘mop tops’ that had everybody talking and my generation copying - the Scousers had set the standard! They were long-haired layabouts as far as our parents were concerned, but they changed their minds shortly after when the Stones appeared on the scene. If the Fab Four epitomised their belief that the whole country had gone to the dogs, then the sight of Michael Jagger and crew had them reaching for the whisky bottles and Valium. A whole succession of groups immediately followed, each trying to outdo the others in the fashion, performance and haircut departments. There was a group called The Pretty Things – which they most definitely were not – and the vocalist had hair that would have been the envy of a Crufts champion Afghan Hound. I remember being very put out by the whole hair thing. There was I with a blond, very curly barnet and there was no way – apart from growing it long – that I could emulate my cool pop star heroes with those distinctive fashionable heads, no matter how hard I tried. But my day would come. As a young boy, I had had to endure

‘290’

viewpoint

the whole, “Ooh, hasn’t your Colin got lovely curly hair, it’s so wasted on a boy”, routine. It was all I could do to stop myself from being sick on their shoes, and once I recall, I actually was. Just to accentuate the whole thing, the rock musical HAIR hit the West End; hair was groovy, hair was where it was at man, hair was . . . well, hairy! Facial hair too, became the thing in the sixties and once again it was those four Liverpool lads that started the trend. When they went off and did their Maharishi/Peace & Love thing and released the Sergeant Pepper album; Zapata-style moustaches became de rigueur. We all had them, even some of the women. Come to think about it, most of the women in our neighbourhood! Towards the tale end of the decade via the fashion conscious Mod-era, Cat Stevens hit the scene, and here was the man I most wanted to be. The amazing talent, the full beard and, once again, the out of sight hair. I hated that goodlooking Greek! Then before we knew it, the multicoloured, full-on seventies were upon us. And if we thought that the 60’s could never be emulated or surpassed in terms

By Colin Bird

colinbadbird@hotmail.com of sheer flamboyance, the likes of Bowie, Roxy Music and Marc Bolan proved us wrong. We mimicked our idols with our platform shoes, psychedelic shirts and satin loons, and the still long, trademark hair do’s. Mott the Hoople sang about us – we were the Young Dudes! Today, even though my body takes five hour lunch breaks and I cannot remember where I put my underpants (oh, I’ve got them on!) and occasionally I hear the voices telling me to do strange things, I am pleased to report that my hair is intact and the envy of my contemporaries. Two of us recently located a follicallyimpaired buddy from my 70’s days through the magic of Facebook and he commented that he was delighted to have re-connected with us even though in his words, ‘You both spent the seventies looking like a yaks backside’. A compliment indeed!

I had to be at Torrecárdenas Hospital between 8 and 12, so 9.30 seemed a good compromise. Acting on knowledge already gained we parked Del safely elsewhere, and pushed our way on foot through the logjam that was the hospital car park. We adjusted our crampons and oxygen cylinders and ascended the 86 steps that lead to the Outpatients door. Here we were met by a wall of humanity, each one apparently conducting a conversation with a far distant friend without the benefit of a mobile phone. I took a deep breath, selected my sharper elbow and fought my way in. Proceeding with the inexorable determination of an Arctic icebreaker I forged my way into the Waiting Room. The Waiting Room was packed to capacity with people who all had the resigned look of the long distance queueer. A roomful of eyes watched as I went to the little machine in the corner and took the ticket that would denote my turn – number 290! I studied the digital display in the foyer telling anyone who was interested that number 97 was currently being seen. I didn’t need to be Einstein to work out that there was more than enough time for coffee, so I prised my way out and headed

towards the Cafeteria. However, you can only spin a coffee out for so long. I returned to the foyer, once again deploying my elbow to effect an entrance. Once inside I glanced at the display – 25. How can that be? I was pretty sure even in my befuddled state that 25 came before 97. I plunged into the heaving throng in the foyer, and selected someone who looked as if she knew what she was doing. Why is it that if ever you need to ask for information, you always pick on the one person in the whole building who speaks neither English nor Spanish? However, it worked! Most of the foyer abandoned their efforts to break the legal decibel level, and explained exactly how the system worked. With co-operation and much examination of papers and numbers we multi-laterally sorted ourselves into number order – we were queueing, just not in a straight line! But, I enquired, how can 97 be called before 25. Easy – 97 was 197, and 25 was 225. The crowd seemed unanimous on this point, so I nodded sagely and shut up. Having fought so hard for it, I wasn’t about to lose my place on a technicality! But I did feel sorry for the lady who came in after me, and took ticket number 345. Is it like this every day in Torrecárdenas?

Views From A Balcony In Spain

By Chris Marshall

Through The Eyes Of Others Marketing has dominated a lot of my discussions over the last couple of weeks, partly because of a new project I am looking at that involves an unique mix of radio, newspaper and Internet as I have been working on a business plan summary, and partly because a friend in the UK is involved in setting up a couple of new ventures and has asked for my input. Another reason is that I had an interesting meeting with

someone here in Almerimar that is looking to set up a multi-level marketing business here to promote a revolutionary vitamin and energy drink supplement. Not something I would be interested in, but a good opportunity for someone that knows the Spanish and Expat market and is prepared to work hard, very hard, on what is in effect and tried and tested marketing model. It was this aspect which

caught my attention more than anything and led to this column as the one over riding impression that I came away from the meeting with was the guy had a very clear and well articulated marketing method. He believed in it, new the benefits of the product (as opposed to just the features), and as importantly knew what it wasn’t ..... and why! It is an approach that I think Almerimar and elsewhere

along the Costa Almeria (Mojacar springs to mind) would do well to adopt! Over the last couple of weeks I have met up with a number of friends who own second properties here in Almerimar, residential tourists, and proud of it! Taking to them I was struck, or more accurately reminded, that they like Sands and I chose Almerimar as much, if not more, because of what it wasn’t than what it was! There is no polite way of saying this really but included

oh, by the way....

America has declared war! Well, nothing new in that! They have done that before, but this time they have declared war against a Spanish doll! A company from Alicante is trying to market their doll “Bebé Glotón” (Greedy Baby) in America, but the b******* won’t let them! The Americans’ arguments are that the doll could awaken the sexuality in 5-6 year old girls (the market the company is targeting), and the “risk” that small girls grow up too rapidly which is of special concern when sex and pregnancies among adolescents is a growing problem. Why the concern? The doll simulates breast-feeding! In a society of “drug, sex and rock-n-roll”, glazed over with a thin layer of puritanism, the resistance should not be a surprise. The Alicante company’s spokesman says that 100 years ago 90% of Americans would have roared with laughter over this controversy, as breast-feeding was a natural part of family life. Sure they would! But that would most likely be from the thought of spending a fortune on a silly doll for a girl that should be helping her mother in the kitchen and not wasting time playing. In those days, children did not have the time to play. It is a modern concept to allow children to be children and grow up slowly. Another part of the spokesman’s argument is that breast-feeding has become unnatural after pharmaceutical companies found gold in producing artificial mothers-milk. Sir, you should be the last one to talk about double-standards. Do you not earn money on exploiting little girls in order to sell your doll? It seems the politicians today are adamant to show us the naked truth. Where I come from, a politician dressed off to the skin, meant that he had run out of arguments in a political debate. Here it literally means a naked politician. The latest is a female candidate in Menorca, who has distributed a poster showing her naked breasts (you cannot see her head, so apparently she does not have anything there to offer the voters), fondled by a set of male hands, and with the title: “Two big reasons”. And no argument there! The trend started with Italian porno-star Ilona Staller – better known as Ciciolina, who in her campaign for parliament had a picture of herself with her breasts exposed. Well, she was a porno-star. In 2006 it was a male, Albert Rivera, who caught attention with his poster for the Catalan elections. He was stark naked, but modestly covered his private parts with his hands. The article, I read, tried to include Germany’s Angela Merkel in the statistics, by referring to a poster for a local elections candidate from Mrs Merkel’s party (an Angela Merkel look-alike), showing both ladies with generously low necklines, and the title: “We offer more”. Well, well – that more brought associations with Africa; everybody knows where it is, but nobody wants to go there. Zapatero is on his way out. A lot of people will probably add a “finally” to that statement. Zapatero himself has handed over most of the tasks to his vice-presidents, Rubalcaba and Salgrado. In my book a wise decision! However, he has not handed over diplomacy to a more knowledgeable member of his cabinet. So, he travels the World like another Clinton, Blair or Aznar, in the hope that the World will take notice and offer him a fat, easy retirement post. And the World has taken notice ……. of his “Mr Bean” like blunders. In a recent visit to China, he rushed out and told the World that the Chinese had promised an injection of billions of €uros to the Spanish building societies, something the Chinese subsequently flatly denied. He then followed up with the stupidest explanation to the “misunderstanding”, one that would make even a school child laugh. As my mother-in-law always said: Better to shut up and appear stupid, than to open your mouth and prove it! in those ‘benefits’ are: - it isn’t Benidorm - it isn’t full of All Inclusive Package tourists (something Mojacar is under threat of at the moment) - it isn’t ‘too English’ And it certainly isn’t Salou on the Costa Dorada which recently hosted Saloufest, the ‘biggest student festival in the world’ which has been running since 2002 and this year attracted 8.000 student over two, four day periods. Tempting as it may be to concentrate on the millions that go to places like Benidorm

each year, the reality is that many many millions more don’t, because it just ‘isn’t for them’. I suspect that many people the world over perceive Benidorm to be Spain, and as such don’t even consider Spain for the type of holiday they are looking for, which is a shame, but at the same time an opportunity for places like Almerimar and Mojacar. I am reminded of the TV programme from years ago: Not The Nine O’Clock News! Almerimar: Not Benidorm! I can see the poster campaign already.

can you tell the difference between a fine wine & plonk?

Spending more than £5 on a bottle of wine is a waste of time, researchers say. According to a study, most people cannot tell the difference between the cheapest supermarket plonk and quality wines that cost up to £30. In a series of blind tests, members of the public correctly identified whether they were drinking a cheap or expensive wine half the time – a success rate that is no better than chance. Psychologist Richard Wiseman, who carried out the study, questioned whether more expensive wines were good value for money. “These are remarkable results,” said Professor Wiseman, guest director of this year’s Edinburgh Science Festival. “People were unable to tell expensive from inexpensive wines and so in these times of financial hardship the message is clear – the inexpensive wines we tested taste the same as their expensive counterparts.” The researchers selected eight cheap wines for the experiment – four whites and four reds. With the exception of a bottle of champagne, all cost less than £5. They then matched each cheap wine with a more expensive bottle made from the same grape variety and produced in the same part of the world. The ‘quality’ wines ranged in price from £9.49 to £29.99. The researchers approached 578 people in Edinburgh and asked them to sample a glass of either a cheap or an expensive wine. The tasters were shown two prices and asked to say which wine they were drinking. They correctly classified the white wines as cheap or expensive 53% of the time, and the reds on 47% of occasions; overall they were right just 50% of the time. People struggled most when it came to differentiating between cheap and expensive

claret. Despite being given either a £3.49 bottle or a £15.99 quality red, just 39% chose the correct wine. They were most accurate when testing pinot grigio, with 59% able to recognise either a £4.29 or £9.49 bottle. “We didn’t ask people to compare two wines because we wanted to mimic real-life conditions,” said Professor Wiseman, of Hertfordshire University. “When you have a meal you don’t decide whether a wine is good or not by comparing it with other wines – you drink it.” Even self-professed wine lovers failed to identify the wines correctly! Guy Woodward, editor of wine magazine Decanter, said he was not surprised by the findings, adding that quality wines were an acquired taste. He said: “If you are used to spending £5 on a bottle of wine and if you enjoy it, then a wine that costs £20 will taste unusual and different. More expensive wines are often less obvious. They may not have the bold fruity flavours of cheaper wines – they will be more nuanced and they may not be as sweet. People may not appreciate the more complex flavours. All taste is subjective. I know that my own palate has changed since I became editor of Decanter.” He continued: “Part of the enjoyment of drinking expensive wines was the knowledge that they were expensive”.

Why turkey eggs are flying off supermarket shelves! For most of us, turkeys have but a single use in life: to fit into the oven and be dished up as an annual festive feast with cranberry sauce on the side...

But now, it seems the birds may find they have a more year-round value - their eggs are shortly being launched in Waitrose, after the supermarket chain announced a rising demand for such ‘speciality’ eggs, sparked by celebrity chefs such as Delia Smith and Jamie Oliver.

they’re bigger than hens’ eggs, you need two instead of three to make a really light sponge cake.’

From this week, the turkey eggs will be nestled among similar gourmet layings from quails and ducks, along with those from the humble chicken.

The eggs will be on sale in selected Waitrose stores until the end of August, when the laying season ends, and will cost £1.99 for a pack of two.

‘Turkey eggs are the most asked-for eggs among our customers,’ says Waitrose eggbuyer Frances Westerman.

And devotees say they’re not only richer than a hen’s egg, but equally delicious fried, poached or boiled. You may just find that you need a bigger egg cup.

‘They have excellent cooking qualities and, because

Turkey eggs have never been on sale before, largely because they lay less frequently than chickens, and because most of the birds are bred for eating at Christmas.

In response to public demand Alberto Zomeño and Manuel Merlos López have joined the existing force, which now consists of an official Head, a Sargent, nine corporals and 47 officers. This appointment will make it easier to fulfill the need of constant retraining of the police force without diminishing service to the local society. .................................... A campaign has been launched to bring home awareness of bad parking practice to motorists in the town and port area of Mazarrón. They are being leafleted with notices quoting ‘You have parked badly! Next time, do it better! Thanks for your collaboration.’ .................................... There has been a French/Spanish student exchange visit between 26 students and 3 teachers from College Cap de Gascogne, France, with 4 students and 2 teachers from Enseñanza Secundaria Domingo Valdivieso. Throughout their visit the students will stay with local families. .................................... Club Deportivo Fenicia have been promoted to the first division with their victory over Bahía de Mazarrón. The 2-1 triumph was a recompense for all the work and effort that has been put into the Club, and was celebrated enthusiastically both in the changing rooms, and later in the streets by supporters.

.................................... 35 people from Águilas, Lorca, Cartagena and Murcia have taken part in the 2nd Jornadas para la Cultura y la Salud at the Hotel Playa Grande. The program of events included Tai Chi, Chinese medicine and Physiotherapy, and concluded with a dinner, where all the participants shared their experiences of the courses. .................................... Local Police improve road safety in the Plaza del Convento and the surrounding areas, including the area around the Puerto. 80 new parking slots have been incorporated, as well as loading and unloading zones. The Plaza has had a complete face-lift, with recreational zones, which will allow the local commercial enterprises to install tables chairs and umbrellas outside their bars and cafes. Road signs have been repainted on all the major routes, such as Avenida Constitución and Calle La Via. There are plans to extend the improvements to the roads most central to the Puerto, such as Avenida Doctor Meca, Calle Mayor, Calle Cartagena, Avenida Tierno Galván, Calle Francisco Yufera, and Calle Hernán Cortés. .................................... Mazarrón holds an International Children’s Book Day. The Mayor, Fransisco Blaya, and the Consejala de Cultura, Alicia Jiménez, stressed the importance of reading for children, many of whom confessed that they had read and enjoyed many books by famous authors such as Hans Christian Andersen without recognising the author’s names.

Medieval Market in Alhama de Murcia

On the weekend following Easter - i.e. on 30 April and 1 and 2 May (sounds a bit like “as much space between King and and and and and the Queen”) - Alhama de Murcia will enjoy a picturesque Medieval Market in the square in front of the Town Hall. Against a background of flags and banners, some 40 wooden craft stalls provide an interesting setting to the motley crowd, among which beggars and courtiers, a juggler and stilt walker as well as a rowdy troupe of troubadours move to make for a colourful scene reminiscent of medieval times. The craft stalls have been carefully selected so as to provide the maximum choice and diversity in lovingly made craftwork; there will be stalls with beautiful leather and fabric handbags, jewelry made of silver, earthenware, semi-precious stones or macramé, candles and ceramics. For children there are wooden toys (remember those?), hand-painted T-shirts (but no famous lables, sorry about that), badges and puppets. And for the inner man and woman there are stalls with sausages, hams of all types, sweetmeats, preserves and cheese made to centuriesold recipes, as well as a medieval tavern run by medieval characters serving medieval beer and roast pork. In fact, something for everybody - for your children or your parents, your friends and neighbours, or perhaps just for yourself. Add to this live medieval music, the crazy antics of the juggler - a charming young lady who also walks on stilts and ties herself in seemingly impossible knots without the aid of Boy Scouts. In the dusk a spooky troupe of white zombies walks over the market with torches and the day is closed off with a fire/faquir show. Organisation of the market is in the hands of Amata, an association of crafts people who make everything they sell, and that means you won’t see imported goods or goods made in factories on the stalls. Everything sold is unique, made by hand with love and close attention. Participants are encouraged to work at the side or behind the stall - not a Spanish custom - so that visitors can see how everything is made. Other craft people run workshops for children - the children can learn how to

Police uncover priceless paintings missing since 1990s

Officers with the Guardia Civil have found two valuable paintings - “La Anunciación” by El Greco and “La Aparición de la Virgen del Pilar” by Francisco de Goya - in a house in Alicante, both of which have been missing since the end of the 1990s. The two works of art, considered part of Spain’s art heritage, had been included in numerous international exhibitions and were reported missing by their owners after their return to Spain in the late 1990s. As a result of the police report lodged after their disappearance, the Guardia Civil’s special Historical Heritage squad uploaded photos of the missing paintings to an international database of stolen artwork, to alert police forces around the world to their disappearance and to make it hard for the thieves to sell them. Last October, investigators received information about a possible sale of the two paintings and the investigation was intensified, leading to the discovery of both paintings at a private address in the province of Alicante.

200kg of cocaine found in Costa Rican pineapples

Officers from the National Police force have confiscated over 200kg of cocaine that was hidden in a shipment of tropical pineapples imported from Costa Rica. The police operation culminated in the arrest of 12 people involved in transporting the drugs from the port of Valencia to Talavera de la Reina (Toledo). Using officers on the ground and in the air, the National Police managed to follow the shipment and arrrest 12 members of drugs trafficking ring based in the provinces of Valencia and Alicante, with one arrest made in either province, six in Toledo and four in Madrid. Apart from the 204kg of cocaine, that was had been vacuum packed in plastic, police also confiscated five cars (including a ‘decoy’ truck loaded only with pineapples), documentation & over 100,000€ in cash.

Further Drops In The US Dollar Market Commentary 15th April 2011 The USD index is struggling to maintain above its November 2009 low around 74.17, with little sign of a change in fortune. A shock rise in weekly jobless claims to 412k (380k expected) did nothing to aid the US Dollar’s efforts as higher commodity prices, and in particular energy prices played negatively. Undoubtedly, many USD pairs have entertained an increase in sensitivity to oil price movements over recent weeks, with the USD falling on the wrong side when oil prices move higher. The commodity currencies e.g. Canadian Dollar and Norwegian Kroner are the key beneficiaries but EUR/USD is also strongly linked with the price of oil. Various Fed comments this week including supportive comments on the USD’s role as a reserve currency have had little effect to boost the view on the dollar despite the generally hawkish slant. US data releases will keep markets busy. The data is unlikely to bring any severe shocks however given the growing FX interest on Fed policy; CPI data may have more weight than usual. The expectation of a trend like 0.2% increase in core CPI, which is unlikely to cause any concern within the Fed, suggests that the USD will acquire little support. The capability of the single European currency to survive a flood of dire news from the eurozone periphery is remarkable. Above

35

all, peripheral bond yields carry on rising especially Greek yields as expectations of debt restructuring develop. Remarks from Germany’s finance minister have added to such expectations. Reports that the Bank of Spain accepted the recapitalisation of 13 banks and that Spanish banks lent only EURO 44 billion last month, the lowest since Jan 2008, may have provided some relief. On the other hand, given that markets are already relative hawkish about eurozone interest rates and given growing peripheral worries as well as overly long EURO market positioning, the upside for EUR/USD is looking increasingly restrained, with a break above technical support around 1.4580 likely to be difficult to achieve over the short-term. The possible restructuring of Greek debt was finally acknowledged by Germany on Wednesday. The European Central Bank report, due in June, will almost certainly show Greek debt on an unsustainable path. Protection of Greek debt hit record highs on Thursday, as did yields on Portuguese 10 year bonds but the Euro has not budged one iota. The contents of this report are for information purposes only. I recently received an email from a very old friend explaining she’d become disillusioned with the Christian faith, which, in her words “simply doesn’t do what it says on the tin.” I suspect that to some extent she was expecting to shock me and waiting for a reaction, but the trouble is that in many respects I sympathise with her comments. I’m more than conscious of the fact that we Christians are such a bad advert for the faith Christ taught and practiced that most of us are enough to put anyone off. So, in reply I enquired which “Tin” she was looking at and just how old, rotten, corrupt and past their sell-by date were the contents she was comparing with that label? For, as I pointed out, any ‘label’ drafted by any Church or other human organisation cannot accurately portray the immensity of our faith. Indeed the only label worth reading is that written by the teaching of Jesus himself, and the only contents capable of comparison, are his life. All other human beings are necessarily flawed and represent his ideal very badly, so can’t do what it says on his “tin”. But of course that very fact is written on the “tin” itself, as St Paul so frequently acknowledged his own failures, and pointed out that the best any of us can achieve is still well below Christ’s standard. So sadly, we should never expect in this life to see a Christianity that truly matches the “label”. But as we look at the life of Jesus, then and only then we can really see what this faith is all about and how poorly most of us match his ideals. For he truly loved and lived for others rather than himself. And as we’re particularly reminded at this Easter period, he died for others too, himself accepting the inevitable penalty on our behalf, for the wrong we’ve done, with no complaint as to the injustice of it all. Almost 3,400 drivers in a week caught using mobile ‘phones

The Guardia Civil have fined almost 3,400 drivers for using their mobile ‘phones manually whilst driving during the seven-day special campaign run by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) to focus on avoiding distractions at the wheel. During the campaign, which began on April 4th and ended on April 10th, 399,237 vehicles were monitored on the roads across Spain (except Catalonia and the Basque Country). Over the course of the seven days 4,201 fines were issued to drivers who were distracted at the wheel, 3,387 of them (85%) for talking on the mobile ‘phone whilst driving. According to a number of different studies, using mobile ‘phones whilst driving multiplies the risk of having an accident by four which makes it similar to the risks of driving whilst over the drink-drive limit. As well as controlling the “improper use” of mobile ‘phones, police officers also monitored the use of GPS systems by drivers, which is considered a similar distraction to talking on the ‘phone: 38

drivers were fined for programming their GPS systems whilst driving. A further 169 people were fined for using headphones or earphones connected to appliances other than telephones. Police officers have reported that 24% of divers stopped during the campaign were using “hands free” devices, which is allowed, but which is still considered to present a risk in terms of diminishing the ability to concentrate whilst driving. “Drivers on the ‘phone don’t keep their speed constant, their reaction time is greater and they tend not to keep a safe distance from the car in front”, said the Traffic Dept., underlining that distractions at the wheel are one of the main causes of accidents in Spain and one which can be easily avoided. So far this year (up to and including April 14th) 168 people have been killed in 329 fatal accidents on Spanish roads and in 158 of those accidents, i.e. 48%, driver distraction was an important factor.

Volvo’s family facelift

Volvo has announced a raft of powertrain and interior updates for its V70, XC70 and S80 models, including a new version of the 1.6-litre DRIVe diesel engine. Under-bonnet changes focus on oil-burners, with the 2.4-litre twin-turbo D5 and 2.0-litre D3 units each receiving upgrades. The former now produces 215bhp – up 10bhp from the old model – and gives the S80 combined fuel economy of 57mpg with the manual gearbox, a figure which drops to 47mpg with the automatic option. Power in the D3

remains the same, but each model gains an extra 3mpg: the S80 now claims 57.7mpg on the combined cycle, with an equivalent figure of 54mpg for the V70 and 51mpg for the XC70.

S80 and V70 models also benefit from the uprated 1.6-litre DRIVe diesel engine already featured in the S60 and V60. That means peak power is hiked by 6bhp, up to 115bhp, while claimed fuel consumption is now 62.8mpg on the combined cycle. CO2 emissions are down from 129g/km

to 119g/km.

The Swedish firm has also given the interiors of the trio a nip and tuck with new upholstery options, and each car now comes fitted with the company’s latest Sensus infotainment system. Some of Volvo’s latest safety features also appear on the models for the first time. These include City Safety with Pedestrian Detection, which made its debut on the XC60 and serves to prevent low-speed collisions, and Adaptive Cruise Control, which automatically keeps the speed of

the car consistent with the vehicle in front. The refreshed cars are available to order now, with prices starting at £25,995 for the V70, £25,245 for the S80 and £28,815 for the XC70.

TEL: 679 646 859 It’s business time at Alfa! In a bid to capture a bigger slice of the company car market, the Italian maker has introduced a new 136bhp diesel engine to its 159 lineup, which emits only 134g/km CO2 and returns a combined 55.4mpg. Performance should still be brisk however, as the 2.0-litre JTDM unit offers an impressive 350Nm of torque from just 1,750rpm, with 0-62mph despatched in just 9.9 seconds. There are three revised trims to choose from, however the entry ‘Turismo’ is already very generously equipped, with 16-inch alloys, cruise and climate control

and Bluetooth all included as standard. The comfort-oriented ‘Lusso’ adds leather seats, sports dials, black aluminium centre console and steering wheel inserts, rear parking sensors and 17 inch multispoke alloy wheels, while the sportier Ti version comes with 19-inch wheels, lowered suspension, red painted brake calipers and black leather and alcantara sports seats as well as a leather sports steering wheel and satin effect wing mirrors. Carbon fibre inserts are available as an option. Available to order now, prices start at £22,500 for the Turismo saloon and rise to £26,900 for the fully loaded Ti Sportwagon estate.

Transit Supervan returns! Get ready for the return of a legend! Back in 1971 Ford stunned the world when it introduced the GT40-based 650bhp Supervan, powered by the same storming 5.0-litre V8 and capable of hitting 178mph flat-out. And now Ford has revisited the winning formula. Currently being shown at the Commercial Vehicle Show at the Birmingham NEC, this one-off project is called the SuperSportVan (SSV) and uses a 200bhp 3.2-litre five-cylinder diesel engine producing 470Nm of torque and normally seen in much larger and heavier Transit models. Here though it’s fitted to the short wheelbase, front-wheel drive SportVan and features exterior styling to match its performance potential. There’s Le Mans bonnet stripes, twin exhausts and alloy wheels, as well as a body kit and extended arches. “Transit has a strong reputation for its robustness and practicality. We wanted to add some contemporary fun and also showcase our engineers’ skill and enthusiasm. SuperSportVan demonstrates just how far you can go with a white Transit van by mixing and matching regular technology in a different way,” explained Steve Clary, commercial vehicles director, Ford of Britain.

Fairwayz Golf Society.......... SWEET SIXTEEN FOR DAYA.....................................

Whilst only 17 turned up to play La Tercia on Thursday 14th.April, I think it fair to say that everyone enjoyed the experience. The weather was fantastic, if a little hot, and the course itself, despite only having 9 holes, which we played twice, once off the blue tees and once off the white tees, was in fantastic condition, providing one managed to keep out of the bunkers. The greens themselves were as perfect as anything that I personally have played on for a long, long time. This course really is a little gem, and at the prices they charge, well worth a regular visit. After his success at our last outing, our 75 year old veteran member Billy Elrick once again showed us all how the game should be played, with his winning score of 31 points, closely followed by Tony McMillan with

30 points and John Saunders with 29 points. Jack Molenaar’s 18 points won him the best front nine, and Steve Lawrence with 16 points won the best back nine. John Pederson won the nearest the pin and the 2’s kitty, and Harry Hunter won the longest drive. As Fairwayz Bar was closed for refurbishment, or to quote the new owner, Fran Cummings, was being completely gutted, he invited us to join him at Let’s Eat restaurant in Benimar, where we were treated to an excellent ploughman’s and complimentary drink. Next outing at El Plantio on Thursday 28th April, 10am tee off. Anyone interested in playing should contact Tony McMillan for the duration of the refurb of Fairwayz.

RODS and REELS This weeks match was the final round of the Coastrider challenge cup. The venue was changed from Blanca to the Rio Segura, Eden canal stretch. Although the river is at it´s full level and flowing slightly faster than normal, it fished well. Nearly every angler on the day lost several big fish, and some a lot more than a couple. That is the joys of fishing, even more so when you fish this stretch of river which has a lot of new reed growth close to the banks. Also, considering that there was a match on this stretch the day before, the river did produce, in comparison to several weeks ago when anglers were struggling for a bite.. Well done to Rods and Reels. ABBEY ANGLING RESULTS supplied by TERRY SCREEN The Match this week was the 1st round of the Spring Series at the Eden Stretch on the River Segura. The river has now coloured up with the sun causing the algae growth, and the fish starting to feed on the bottom. 1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 18.560kg on the pole with corn and pellet 2nd Lenny (Ex Cultural Attache) Bolton with 8.680kg on the pole with corn and paste 3rd Paul (The Fryer) Baxter with 8.040kg on the pole with paste and pellet The fishing is starting to improve with the warmer weather, and this week there was no dry nets. Last Friday I visited the Segura

to check on the state of the pegs for the coming match, and on the opposite bank were 2 men with their wives having a picnic, and they had 9 rods in the water. Why is it that only the match men get challenged by the authorities?, I was reprimanded at Pedrera for having 3 rods set up for fishing a competition and only using one of them in the water at any time, he told me I could only have one rod at a time set up. All details are available from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965328368 ANGLERS TOGETHER Anglers Together was formed to introduce and encourage anglers of all abilities to meet up and get together to fish, either sea or freshwater. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about. Daya Nueva 16 Mil Palmeras 2 Alevins under 12s Daya started well and were 3 goals up in 9 minutes with goals by David and Marcos (2). Palmeras pulled a goal back with a thunderous free kick from distance that Jota in our defence could only help on its way with his head. On 14 minutes Francisco beat two Palmeras players before hitting a great shot that gave us our 4th goal. Back came Palmeras and on 15 minutes they scored to make it 4 - 2. What a first quarter of the game this was with Palmeras

playing their part in an end to end match. Daya then took control and on 20 minutes Jose scored. He scored again on 27 minutes. Then on the stroke of half time Carlos made it 7 - 2 Daya. The second half belonged entirely to Daya and on 32 minutes Carlos scored our 8th. The 9th came from Youseff on 38 minutes followed 2 minutes later by Andres tucking away the 10th. David added number 11 on 46 minutes. When Youseff made it 12 - 2 on 48 minutes we had 5 players on 2 goals each but who would reach their hattrick first. In the final 7 minutes

Youseff scored 3 more to give him 5 for the match. Jota also scored with a great run out of the heart of the Daya defence to hit an unstoppable shot from distance, so 16 - 2 final score. A good crowd of supporters from both camps saw a good sporting contest in which Palmeras never gave up trying and were Daya’s equals in the first 15 minutes. The match official was first class and was on top of the game from the start. Man of the Match Youseff for his 5 goal feat. Team Sponsor Segurlab. fc cartagena.........................................................

A RIGHT REAL HAMMERING REAL BETIS - 5 FC CARTAGENA - 0 BY STEVE HIBBERD Ok, so once again I didn’t actually watch this latest thrashing, but judging by an eye witness report (sky blue Fred), and having read the Spanish press (Murcian variety) view, referee Gorka Oscoz played a big part in Cartagena’s downfall. Top of the table Betis are clear bookies favourites to win div 2a championship, and when they deservedly lost at Cartagonova stadium at the end of last year, you just knew that it was only a temporary blip. Cartagena meanwhile, are going through a serious loss of form, having now conceded 11 goals in the past 3 games, resulting in them slipping outside the play off places, and unless a lengthy winning run can be strung together, they can kiss all hopes of promotion goodbye. The game erupted after only 20 mins, when central defender Cygan was adjudged to have handled inside the pen area.

Evidently, the ball was hammered at him, and even though he was turning away from the shot, it hit his back before striking the rear of his arm. To rub salt in the wound, he was given a red card for his sins, before Betis striker Molina slotted home the spot kick. Frustration then got the better of Los Albinegros manager JIM, who also fell foul of ref Oscoz and was dismissed from the dug out. Five mins into the 2nd half, Ruben Castro made it 2-0, then on 71 mins the ever dangerous Emana hit an unstoppable volley into the top of the net. Before the game could be restarted, Victor became the 2nd Cartagena player to be dismissed for presumably foul or abusive language. Down to 9 men, Cartagena were torn to shreds by the rampant Betis, and it was no surprise when Molina completed his hat trick with goals on 79 and 83 mins. FC Cartagena line-up: Casilla, Cala (Schmoller), Pablo, Txiki, Mariano, Clavero, Moral (Longas), Julien, Riga, Victor,

Lafuente (Maldonado) Thousands of miles away in Malaysia, I was again getting my footie fix in the form of another super league match at Shah Alam stadium. Selangor v Perak was not only a top of the table clash, but one which attracted over 40,000 fans, of which almost a quarter were supporting the visiting side. I discovered that the recent decision of clubs permitted to register only home grown players, is designed to improve Malaysia’s chances of winning the Asian cup, and even though they are leap years behind the likes of Japan and South Korea, in the 7 years I have been watching, this season is by far the most entertaining and skillful (what’s the chances of England adopting the same policy?). Next up for Cartagena is a home match against Real Valladolid. Make a note of Sat 23 Apr ko 6pm, for this div 2a fixture which will be played inside Cartagonova stadium.

EUROGOLF.................................. EUROGOLF LADIES MATCH AGAINST SCANDINAVIAN LADIES LA MARQUESA 17th APRIL 2011. An excellent day’s golf for everyone concerned, 12 Eurogolf Ladies took on 12 ladies from the Scandinavian Golf Society. The Eurogolf team looked very smart in their new blue EGS shirts, obviously inspired them to victory, beating the Scans 368 points to 357 points. Finally many thanks to Cindi and Henny - two great Captains!!

AT EL PLANTIO: 30 members arrived at El Plantio in the sunshine for our Medford competition, the course was in good condition and the greens somewhat unpredictable. The first tee was eventful with many players having to play provisional balls, especially our captain who had three goes, however all balls were found to be in play. Diamantes took on their close neighbours La Manga and although the men from La Manga tried their hardest they went down by 33pts to 20pts so as the sun sank in the sky the league table looks like this (1) Diamantes-----251pts (2) Roco Gogs------229pts (3) Camposol------204pts (4)Roda Golf-------203pts =(4)Hacienda-------203pts (6)San-Javier------199pts (7)La-Manga-------188pts (8)Sensol-----------169pts (9)Sucina-----------167pts (10)S.P.Crew-------152pts A few shakers 6 movers but still a very interesting last two games with our next game at Roda on the 11th of May. Orihuela Costa F.C.................. ORIHUELA RFC.............................

Orihuela Costa F.C. 1 Jacarilla C.F. 6 Veja Baja League Cup Cadete Sponsored by Morgans Bar & Amber Pools. This week saw Costa play on Sunday in the League Cup game against Jacarilla who are currently top of the league. It was Costa who started brightly with Patrick Bass this week being played in Midfield along side Charlie frost and in the opening 5 minutes they were winning most challenges. Costa should of took the lead early on when Glen Lawton drilled a terrific free kick on target but the keeper was lucky when he spilled it & Costa couldnt capitilise. Shortly after Jacarilla took the lead on 7 mins when they broke down the wing and were allowed to pick out a pass due to a lack of tracking back from Costa players. This was to continue throughout the first half when Costa players decided not to run back and therefore gave the Jacarilla players too much time on the ball when they were on the attack. Patrick Bass was withdrawn with a grion strain, which was a big blow to the Costa side. Jacarilla took advantage of the lack of desire and added further goals on 15 & 25 mins to take an 0 - 3

advantage at half time. Things didnt get better in the second half for the home team and on 37 & 38 mins Costa conceaded two more goals. Despite rotating several players Costa could not put more than two passes together due to the Jacarilla workrate and desire to win. One bright moment for Costa was when Luke Deegan hit a consolation goal on 44 mins. Unfortunatley Luke Deegan also had to be withdrawn when he went in for a crunching tackle and took a blow to the back of his calf which was a shame as he was one of only a few who put in a performance to be proud of. But Jacarilla didnt sit back and scored again on 53 mins to take a 1 - 6 scoreline. This week saw another ridiculous decision when A Jacarilla player was shown Red Card , and then the referee let the Jacarilla team then bring on a replacement player so they retained a full 7 on the pitch. Apparantly this is allowed ,although last week when a Benijofar player was shown Red for puching a manager the Benijofar side were reduced to 6 players. Fantastic consitancy from the spanish officials who love to look after their own shall we say.

ANOTHER QUIET WEEKEND FOR ORIHUELA RFC At the weekend Orihuela RFC juveniles had a last minute arranged match away to Torreveija, which I have been told was a very open and entertaining match, with the Orihuela RFC senior’s coach refereeing, and also disallowing a good try by Orihuela, well that’s what the Torreveija coach told me. Torreveija eventually ran out 22-10 winners. Also at the weekend Torreveija seniors cancelled their game against Orihuela yet again at the last minute, which was very disappointing for the players who had trained during the week for the match. There are quite a few things going on during the next 6 weeks, starting

on Friday 29 April, Orihuela RFC will have a stand at the Rojales market for the Royal Wedding celebration and everyone is welcome to come and try their hand at some rugby skills and all of the money raised will be donated to Cunningham Nurses. On 6 May Orihuela RFC will be entertaining Irvine RFC from Scotland during their Spanish tour. Then on 27-29 May Orihuela will have their usual stand again at the “This is Spain exhibition” at La Zenia Hotel supporting as always The Butterfly Children, stand number 7. And finally we have the London Irish shirt signed by all of the players with all of the money raised being donated to the Butterfly Children. If you want to know any more details of what rugby is about in the

Mazarrón FC............................. Mazarrón FC 0 CD Pozo Estrecho 1 This was an ill-tempered game with very little good football and even fewer goal opportunities. However, it was won by a goal of real class, although whether Molina will ever score another like it is very unlikely. Unfortunately, the game was marred by what looked like a serious neck injury to the visitors’ defender Abraham, who appeared to fall badly twelve minutes from the end. Mazarrón came closest to scoring first, when an in-swinging corner from Ruben nearly caught Bartolo out, but he was able to punch the ball clear off his own goal line. There was very little of note after that until the 26th minute. Pozo won their first corner, one of only two in the whole match, when Peru was forced into a save at the near post by Chules. Dato took the kick

on the right, and it found Molina on the edge of the penalty area. He hit a sweet volley in off the post, giving Peru no chance. It was the sort of goal that a striker hits once in a blue moon and it was certainly worthy of winning this game. 5mins later, Peru managed to save a long range shot from Alex at the second attempt. One of the few pieces of good football in the first half then created a chance for Ruben after a flowing move involving Chico, Alfonso and Robert, and then Robert looked to have got the perfect head on for Ruben but he was adjudged to have been just off side. There was a flurry of activity at the start of the second half as Mazarrón tried to inject more pace with the addition of Abdel and Moha. In the very first minute Abdel picked up a long clearance on the left, playing it on for Ruben and his cross deserved better as Moha headed

not disappointed how our day turned out. The course was in good condition and so was the weather. Our lowest handicap player (off 8) showed the way with a good 35 points. This was Gerry Buckley - Well done. Our guest Larry McCormack played very well and finished on 36 points. Our Summer Ball and 10 year anniversary is on July 1st . Immediately after that, Poyatos played a great ball behind the defence to Moha and Ruben side footed his volley well over the bar. Pozo couldn’t cope with the extra inject of energy, and their answer was some of the most appalling time wasting seen this season. Time and again play was held up for nonexistent injuries. Tempers started to get frayed and Bartolo was lucky to stay on the pitch for an attempted head butt on the diminutive Chico, before Ruben was shown red for an off the ball incident whilst play was waiting for a throw to be taken. Then came the injury to Abraham that necessitated an ambulance and held play up for nearly twenty minutes. Neither side created any opportunities when the match was eventually restarted. This weekend, Mazarrón travel to Lumbreras.Ruben. MMoM: Diego Roger, mccmurcia.com 17.04.11
