RE-IMMERSE: A REPOSITORY OF STORYTELLING

Ageing, a “mutual withdrawal or disengagement which inevitably takes place between the ageing person and others”, mentioned in the book “Growing Old” by Elaine Cumming and William E. Henry.

As the aging population increases, now aging in place is much preferred by the Baby Boomers instead of typical institutional aged cares, allowing them to stay connected within their community, and engaging with people of all ages and abilities in a shared effort for a common good.

The Repository of Storytelling provides a safe haven for the population of downsizing elderlies in Docklands to re-establish a sense of place through storytelling. It builds inter-generationalconnections through activities of story sharing and facilitates the preservation of the aged and their autobiographical memories in the form of an archive.

It is a place for reflections, gatherings, discussions and ponderings. It is a place to re-build, to re-engage and to ‘Re-immerse’.

Here, have a seat, and tell us your stories.

IN BETWEEN FAULTY & FAULTLESS: CORRIDOR TO REPAIR PERFECTION

Another musical piece I need to polish. Doubts and disappointments. Practice makes perfect, they say.

Through the wall, I watch those bruised and blistered hands. They are just like mine. SNAP! A string broke. She chuckles and starts again. I release a breath I had not realize I had been holding. I matched my pace with the thumping from the metal floors.

When I reach the end of this corridor, the moths in my stomach become butterflies. I am ready to play.

IN BETWEEN FAULTY AND FAULTLESS: CORRIDOR TO REPAIR PERFECTION.

The faulty is found in the craft of violin repairers whereas the faultless found in musicians with musical performance anxiety. A corridor bridges and links the faulty and the faultless. Thus, this project interrogates the idea of perfectionism in craft and proceeds in the act of repairing perfection.

ABBOTSFORD’S STARTER CULTURE

The project aims to build a link between fermentation and scaffolding as an architectural proposition to empower people through education on fermenting their food, community and creative expression through art and making. At the same time to build a healthy support system for the future generation of creatives and act as a model for bringing cultures and various forms of expression together.

Imagine Abbotsford as the gut in an urban context. What ‘health benefits’ could come from the fermentation of the local community through food and art?

Despite our scientific know-how, modern life makes fermentation unintuitive and difficult. But it’s precisely this practice that can help us come to shift our thinking and how we perceive the world. A world where fermentation is integrated into our daily life might be a bit messier, but it would also be more caring to the many life forms with whom we co-exist. A celebration of inclusiveness and diversity not only in what we eat but our symbiotic relationship with where we live.

Food is art, food is political , and we should constantly remind ourselves about its social and cultural significance in contemporary times.

SYSTEMATICALLY PANNED

The focus of this design subject is to generate design ideas, translating them into architectural forms, spaces, materials and programs. This is the capstone subject for the Architecture major in the Bachelor of Design, integrating previous coursework in the major. The focus of this subject is architecture that deals with design issues at the urban scale. The site and accompanying projects deal with a development of up to 100,000m2, or a combination of sites at this scale. The project seesa the design within the context of an urban morphology and will examine and explore the consequences of individual projects to their surrounding context. The project engages with historical, theoretical, structural, and environmental ideas relevant to the specific project through the lectures and various design exercises.
