Letter from the Executive Director

Sojourner House again experienced continued growth during 2017 – in addition to strengthening and expanding our residential programs, we also brought in new funding for our immigration advocacy program, HIV testing, and community education work.

We were excited to see our 2017 fiscal budget well exceed the $1.2 million mark for the first time in several years.

The year was also a pivotal one for the community at large – with the #MeToo movement, Time Magazine’s “Silence Breakers” as Person of the Year, and the wide outpouring of victims coming forward to report sexual harassment. It is clear that we are living during a time of heightened awareness to the issues surrounding intimate partner violence.

A logical next question is this: What’s next? How do we sustain the energy, commitment, and passion that has driven this movement in the past year?

First, it starts locally. Supporting community-based organizations (like Sojourner House!) is the best way to have an immediate, direct impact on your community. Organizations like Sojourner House rely on dozens of volunteers every year to help us answer our hotline, staff our shelters, and serve on fundraising committees. We are always looking for dedicated, dependable volunteers to help us execute our mission.

Secondly, we need to hold our decision-makers accountable. Are you concerned about gun violence?

Restraining order laws? Penalties for offenders of domestic violence? There are many legislative groups that have formed to address these issues. And, of course, running for office or supporting someone who shares your values is the best way to make sure that your interests are represented at the state or federal level.

Third, we need to work together.

We are not going to end domestic and

sexual violence overnight, and even though the work that we do at Sojourner House serves thousands of victims and survivors every year, there’s no way we can end this public health epidemic alone.

We work collaboratively with dozens of other service providers every year, and we’re available to provide educational presentations, technical assistance, and direct assistance to clients of other organizations. We are stronger and more unified the more we work together.

As we move forward, it is clear that there is much work to be done to stay true to our vision to end domestic and sexual violence. But we can all feel more comforted by the fact that we have a community of supporters and donors who are cheering for us along the way – people just like you. Thank you for your on-going support, and we hope to connect with you in the coming year.

CLIENT PROFILE: Viviana* One of our support group clients, Viviana*, shares her personal story of how she came to Sojourner House.

"My therapist at the Community Action Program in Cranston recommended that I explore a support group for women in abusive relationships. I had been struggling with trying to leave my husband after his arrest on domestic violence charges. I was scared to be alone and abandon the dream of a wonderful marriage and family life. However, I knew I could not subject myself or my girls to further emotional and physical abuse.

My husband’s arrest six weeks earlier was not the first time he hurt me physically, but it was the most severe.

By learning about signs of abuse, the Cycle of Violence, and about healthy relationships in the support group, I began to realize, while I felt very alone and isolated, I was not alone in suffering. I was not the only person

under control of an abuser.

Through the support group members, and the caring, knowledgeable facilitators, I am learning patterns in my relationship that slowly developed into abuse over several years. I was not ‘exaggerating’ my fears; I was not ‘crazy’ as my husband had repeatedly told me over the years.

With the help of the support group, I have now begun to hear and trust my own voice and my own truth. It is still very hard to clearly envision a future for myself with my girls. I do, however, now have hope that I can have a good future, protect my girls, help them have healthy relationships and leave this marriage a stronger and happy person. *Name has been changed to preserve anonymity, image is a representation

DONOR PROFILE: Michelle Sojourner House's work would not be possible without the support of our community. One of our donors, Michelle Nicholas, donates both financially and through service to our cause. As an emergency room nurse, Michelle has generously donated her time and expertise since 2015 to serve as the camp nurse for Camp Eureka, our summer camp for children who have witnessed abuse.

Michelle shares what inspired her to get involved with our work: "I first learned about Sojourner House in 2014 when I saw a Facebook post for their Masquerade Ball. I had an amazing time at the event, and it was there that I learned more about Sojourner House’s mission to educate and prevent domestic violence here in RI. Domestic

violence is something I see very often as an Emergency Department RN, and as a nurse I've wanted to help those who present to the ER with as many resources as possible.

One of the things that makes Sojourner House unique is the diversity of their programming. I love their programs for the children, especially Camp Eureka, which is a summer camp for children who have witnessed domestic violence. I’ve always loved working with kids, starting from a young age when I would babysit. For the past three years I have been honored to serve as a volunteer camp nurse for this program, providing on-site assistance to any medical needs that may arise. I have seen first-hand how important it is for these kids to get away from the stressors of home or the shelter for a week and get to have fun and just be a kid again. Many of the kids just want to have a normal and fun summer; however because of their circumstances it can be difficult for

their families to access the resources to send them to summer camp.

All of the kids at Camp Eureka have experienced trauma. Camp serves as an opportunity for them to be among their peers who have been through similar experiences, and creates a safe space for them to enjoy being outdoors, seeing some new and exciting animals (thanks to the Zoo!), and to be around adults and older kids who are supportive and encouraging of them. We have some amazing counselors from Moses Brown who are great influences on the children and truly know how to make the week fun. The counselors are so patient with the kids, it's truly a joy to watch and interact with all of them!

Camp Eureka has been a very special part of the summer for me.

It's a time I get to mentor and serve as a positive role model for the kids, as well as a chance for me be a kid at heart. Sadly, I can't take them all home with me!”

BOARD PROFILE: Karen Karen Oliveira served as a member of the Board of Directors from 2011 through 2017, and for three years served as the Board President.

"In 2010, my predecessor, Neville Bedford, former Chair of Sojourner House, had reached out to me to ask if I would be interested in serving on the Board of Directors. As I recall, I hesitated due to the quintessential internal inquiry one asks oneself when someone offers an opportunity to accept such a notable responsibility.

I considered the question, “ Can I offer this position the commitment it requires and warrants?” Once resolved, there was no doubt about serving as a board member of this reputable organization.

I have worked with and for nonprofit agencies my entire adult life, but Sojourner House does, and continues to, impress me. What impresses me is its commitment, its focus,

I believe this demonstrates the organization’s dedication to fully assess, intervene, and eradicate violence in all areas, but more importantly, in areas that are, at times, overlooked due to limited or non-existent funding sources. Sojourner House’s perseverance and devotion to these critical social issues has enabled them to overcome those barriers in order to fill gaps in services and meet the needs of those significantly impacted by this social epidemic.

PROGRAM PROFILE: THEIA "I am a victim of human trafficking. And I can say that with the help that Sojourner House has been providing to me, I am bettering myself everyday.

Since coming to Sojourner House, I am taking Spanish classes, English classes, cooking classes, bartending classes, and now I am taking peer advocacy classes.

Masquerade Ball Thanks to your support, the 7th Annual Masquerade Ball raised a record-breaking $113,000 on Friday, November 17th, 2017. The grand ballroom of the iconic Providence Biltmore hotel was filled to capacity, with a sold-out crowd of 500 people donning masks, suits, and Hollywood-inspired gowns in keeping with this year’s theme, Walk the Red Carpet.

No permission required!” –Survivor Award recipient, Kimberly Cruz On Friday, May 12th 2017, we hosted our 2nd Annual Sojo MoJoe Breakfast at the Providence Marriott Downtown to commemorate our 40+ years of anti-violence work in Rhode Island. It was an incredible morning, featuring a powerful keynote by Houston-based author, activist, and social justice consultant, Eesha Pandit, as well as two award presentations: Kendra Marasco of Providence College received the Legacy Award in appreciation of her vision and work as Sojourner House's former Executive Director, and domestic violence survivor Kimberly Cruz received the Survivor Award in recognition of the inspiration Ms. Cruz has provided to other victims and survivors by sharing her story.

Thanks to more than 250 generous supporters, this event raised nearly $35,000 in support of our mission.

The Breakfast also marked the conclusion of our 2017 Spring Campaign - raising over $63,000 and making this the largest individual fundraising campaign for our organization to date! These critical funds directly support the programs and services we provide to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. Thank you to all who contributed to this campaign - we truly could not do this work without you!

CELEBRATING SOLUTIONS AWARD In the fall of 2017, Sojourner House was selected as one of four national Mary Byron Project Celebrating Solutions awardees. We were recognized for our LGBTQ Advocacy and Education Program, dedicated to providing culturally competent and inclusive services to LGBTQ victims and to providing education and training to community organizations, schools, law enforcement agencies, medical providers, and the community on LGBTQ cultural competency issues. The Mary Byron Project fosters and supports innovative solutions to addressing intimate partner violence across the country. The Mary Byron Project created the Celebrating Solutions Awards to showcase and applaud local innovations that demonstrate promise in breaking the cycle of intimate partner violence. Nominations are judged by a panel of experts in criminal justice, health care, and public policy, and other disciplines that address intimate partner violence. As a part of our LGBTQ programming, Sojourner House offers shelter and housing to all victims, regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, and gender expression, and we have the capacity to serve those who identify as male and female as well as those who are gender nonconforming. We offer LGBTQ victims supportive services, including one-onone advocacy, support groups, sexual health advocacy, and free HIV testing.

Launched in 2004, our LGBTQ program is the only one of its kind in the state. To date, our program has provided services to hundreds of victims and has conducted educational presentations to over 500 professionals.
