The institute was programmed as a spiritual & skill development center for the native Dalit Baudh Ambedkar Buddhist community. The mandate of Jetavana is to provide a spiritual anchor for their practice of Buddhist thought through meditation and yoga while also imparting training and skill development for members of the community

The Jetavan Centre, designed by Sameep Padora and Associates in rural Maharashtra, is built for the spiritual & skill development of the local Buddhist community. The half acre plot had over 40 trees, which were all preserved after construction. Artisans from Hunarshala helped build the structure.

• The flooring is a traditional mud and dung floor done by members of the local community, which is known to have antiseptic properties.

• Further by inverting the roof profile with a center valley in the middle and rising edges the interior spaces were visually connected with the foliage outside. The interior spaces hence are also a function of the outside setting, with a lightness that belies the heavy programs on site. The separation of the roof from the walls while providing much needed cross ventilation also scales the building towards the courtyard.

The philosophy of METI (Modern Education and Training Institute) is learning with joy. The teachers help the children to develop their own potential and to use it in a creative and responsible way. The building reflects these ideas in terms of materials, techniques and architectural design.

• Commission: January 2004

Project goal:

• 270 m3 cob for walls, ceilings in the ‘caves’, rammed earth floors

• Walls, ground floor: load bearing cob walling (wet earth technique, straw earth mixture)

Materials used

• METI aims to promote individual abilities and interests taking into account the different learning speeds of the schoolchildren and trainees in a free and open form of learning. It offers an alternative to the typical frontal approach to lessons.

• 12,500 bamboo strips for upper storey bamboo facades

• Foundations: Brick masonry with damp proof course

Construction

• Facade upper floor: Timber window frames with bamboo cladding

• On the ground floor with its thick earth walls, three classrooms are located each with their own access opening to an organically shaped system of ‘caves’ to the rear of the classroom. The soft interiors of theses spaces are for touching, for nestling up against, for retreating into for exploration or concentration, on one’s own or in a group.

• 83 m3 masonry brickwork for foundations and veranda

• 2,300 bamboo canes for ceilings, upper storey, facades

• Flat roof, corrugated iron roofing

• Upper floor: Framework of thick bamboo members

Concept and Design

• 400 tonnes wet earthen material

• Light and shadows from the bamboo strips play across the earth floor and contrast with the colourful materials of the saris on the ceiling.

• Ceiling: Bamboo ceiling, triple layer with cob fill

• The architecture of the new school reflects this principle and provides different kinds of spaces and uses to support this approach to teaching and learning.

Site Area: 24,680 sq.m.

Climate: The climate of Chhattisgarh is tropical. It is hot and humid because of its proximity to the Tropic of Cancer and its dependence on the monsoons for rains. Summer temperatures in Chhattisgarh can reach 45 °C (113 °F). The monsoon season is from late June to October and is a welcome respite from the heat. Chhattisgarh receives an average of 1,292 millimeters (50.9 in) of rain. Winter is from November to January. Winters are pleasant with low temperatures and less humidity.
