Becominganinteriordesignerischallenging,notonlybecauseofthe demandingworkbutalsoduetothecomplexlegalitiesandcontractsthat canbedaunting.Honestly,Iinitiallythoughtthatbeinganinterior designerwouldsimplyinvolvedrawingplansanddoing3Dwork. However,therewasmuchmorewaitingforme.
Asanewcomertotheprofessionalworld,itisdifficulttobewell-versedin theselawsandcontracts.ThisiswhytheProfessionalPracticemodule exists.
Inthismodule,weweredividedintoteamstostudyvarioustopics, enhancingourteamworkskillsthroughgroupassignmentswhilelearning aboutdifferentlegalandcontractualknowledge.Atthesametime,we hadtodesignandpresentwhatwelearnedtoteachotherstudents, effectivelyhittingtwobirdswithonestone.
Themaingoalofthismoduleistoallowustoself-studyand acquire essentialknowledgeforourfuturecareers.Itisnotaboutmastering everythingbutaboutrecallingtherelevantlawswhenneeded.
Inmyopinion,thismoduleisoneofthemostpracticallybeneficialsubjects forstudents.Ithelpsusplanhowtoapproachthefutureoftheinterior designindustry.
Asfuturegraduateinteriordesigners,itisessentialforstudentstohaveacomprehensive understandingandvocabularyrelatedtocontractual,professional,andlegislativetermsthatareused dailywithclients,contractors,peers,authorities,andthegeneralpublic.
ThisassignmentintroducesthestandardsofProfessional ConductandPractice.Itaimstooutlinethe generalprofessionalbehaviorandself-disciplineexpected ofinteriordesignersregisteredwiththe BoardofArchitects(LembagaArkitekMalaysia).
Studentsarerequiredtoreferencedocumentsthatarecloselyrelatedtothelegalandregulatory frameworkinpractice,suchastheArchitectsAct1967,ArchitectsRules1996,UniformBuildingBy-Laws 1984,PAM/MIIDContract,andotherregulatoryprovisionsrelevanttotheprofession.
Ourgroupwasassignedthetopicofactivefiresafetyandfireevacuationforthisassignment.We focusedondetailedaspectsoffiresafetyregulationsandcoveredvariouslegalknowledgefoundinthe UniformBuildingBy-Laws.Additionally,wehadtocreateagroupstylescapethatalignedwiththe

Thefirstassignmentintheprofessionalpracticemodulewashonestly overwhelmingtokeepupwith.Beforethemodulestarted,Iwondered whythiswasnecessaryafterfinishinganinternship.Ieventhoughtthis shouldbetakenbeforetheinternship.However,thosethoughtswere completelyshatteredasIworkedonthisassignment.
Themostimportantaspectofthisassignmentwasthelegalinformation.I focusedonActiveFireProtection,andthemoreIresearched,themoreI realizedthecountlessdetailedregulationsthatexist.Thisthrewmeintoa dilemma.Wecouldn'tincludealltheprovisionsinourstylescape,but selectingonlyafewmadetheinformationverylimitedandoversimplified. Bridgingthisgapwassupposedtobeourandmyteammates'skill,but unfortunately,wefailedtodothateffectively.Additionally,ourlackof familiaritywithcreatingastylescapeledtoseveraltrialanderrorissues.
IfoundthatIgainedmorefromthisassignmentaftercompletingitthan whileworkingonit.Duringtheprocess,itwashardtograspwhatwas what.Iwasmerelytryingtosurvivethefloodofinformation. However, afterfinishingtheassignmentandlookingatitfromadistance,Irealized howmuchIhadmissedandhowvaluabletheinformationIhadabsorbed became.
Thisassignmentoffersstudentsthechancetolearnfrominvitedspeakersfromvariouscountriesand companies,providingabroadunderstandingofprofessionalpractices.Studentscanregisterfor multiplewebinars,choosinglecturesthatalignwiththeirinterestsandgoals.
Additionally,forumsallowstudentstoshareideaswithpeers, gainingnewperspectivesand knowledge.Thiscombinationofwebinarsandforumsequipsstudentswithpracticalinsightsanda diverseskillsetfortheirfuturecareers.
Thistime,anindividualassignmenthasbeengiven.Eachstudentisrequiredtoattendsixwebinarsand summarizetheminamindmapformat.Additionally,forthethreeforumsheldeveryotherweek, studentsmustposttheiropinions,engageindiscussions,andthensummarizeboththeirownandtheir peers'opinionsinamindmapformat.

Thisassignmentwasanopportunityformetoexpandmyknowledge.It involvedattendinglecturesontopicsofmychoiceandsummarizingthem inamindmapformat,whichwasaveryappealingtaskforme.Various companiesanduniversitiessharedextensiveknowledgeonhowtobrand oneselfandplanforthefutureaftergraduation.
Notwantingtowastethisopportunity,Iattendednotonlythethree mandatorywebinarsbutalsothethreeadditionalonesIcouldchoose freely,listeningintentlyandtakingdetailednotes.Somelectureswere simpleenoughformetounderstandbutstillinformative,while others requiredahigherlevelofexpertisethatIfoundchallengingtograsp. Nevertheless,allthelectureswerehighlybeneficial.
Honestly,theforumswerequitedisappointing.Thetopicswere interesting,andIwaseagertoshowcasemyknowledge,butmypeers' responsesfeltrobotic,almostasiftheywereusingthelatestChatGPT. Despitethisdisappointment,theexperiencewasstillvaluable.Engagingin discussionsandsharingideaswithotherswasasignificantchallengefor someoneasreservedasme,butitwasworththeeffort.
Thisassignmentallowedmetoreflectonmyselfandabsorbvarious knowledge.Thetimeinvestedinthisprocesshasenrichedmy understandingandlaidafoundationformyfuture.
Thisassignmentsetsthescenarioforstudentstotore-imagineandre-conceptualizetheideal architecturalpracticeofthefuture.Participantsareencouragedtoconsidervariouschallengesoften facedbyarchitects/designersandproposesolutions,andinnovativebusinessmodels.
Indecidingthedesiredbusinesscontext,studentsneed toevaluatecriticallythedataobtainedin Project1.Indoingthisassignment,studentswillbecleareroftheirownvisionandmissioninforming theirowndesigncompanywithinthebusinesscontext.Thisisachievedthroughreflectionofone’sown actionandlearninginapplyingeffectivebusinesspractices.

Thistime,weweregivenanassignmentthatbuildsontheknowledgefromassignments1and2, focusingonvariouslegalmattersandregulations.Thetaskinvolvesanalyzingthestructuresof differentbusinessesandcreatingahypotheticalcompany.Thegoalistometiculouslyanalyzeand developthecomponents,necessarylaws,andconditionsforthebusiness,simulatingtheprocessof establishingarealcompany.Thisisalsoagroupproject,emphasizingtheimportanceofteamworkand theproperacquisitionandorganizationofinformation.

Ifoundthisassignmenttobeincrediblyfascinating.Itgave methe feelingofbeingaCEOrunningalargecompany,allowingmetodeeply understandthephilosophybehindestablishingabusinessandthekey considerationsinvolvedinitsoperation.
AlthoughIcouldn'tfullyimmersemyselfduetotheneedtopayclose attentiontotherelevantlawsandregulations,theassignmentstillmade mefeellikeIwasaCEO.Themostimpactfulpartoftheprojectwas focusingonthecompany'sservicesandemployeewelfare.
Iwantedtobringinnovationthatdoesn'tyetexistinMalaysiaby researchingvariouslawsandreal-lifecases.AlthoughIhadtomakesome realisticcompromises,suchasexperimentingwithafour-dayworkweek,I stillfeltlikeaninnovativeCEO.
Itfeltlesslikeanassignmentandmorelikeengaginginareallyenjoyable activity.Ifoundmyselfwishingformoreprojectslikethisthat are conductedinsuchanengagingmanner.
ThisassignmentallowsstudentstoapplytheirknowledgegainedinProject1intotheirindividual projectsinAIAD2.Eachregulatory,legislative,andtechnicalprovisionmustbeillustratedintoan informativereportpresentationwithdimensions,drawings(includingisometrics)andmaterialswhere necessary.Studentswillbeassessedbasedontheirabilitytoexplainandapplyknowledgeand understandingtotheirFinalAIAD2Project.
ThisexerciseservesasaworkingpaperforAIAD.Students’designshallnotchangeorbeinfluencedby thelawsduetobothmodule’stimeconstrainfactor,instead,itactsasanoverallguidelinetoaddress thenextforthcomingstepsbeforefinalizingthebuildingplans.Thus,studentsareaskedtoidentify non-compliancebymarkingan(x)anddescribingthenextcourseofactionfordesignrectification.This rigorousprocessisessentialtoensurecompliancewiththelawbeforethedrawingscanbesubmitted totheLocalAuthority.
Asexplainedabove,thisassignmentislinkedwithAIAD2.Thetaskinvolvesspecifyingthepurpose groupforthesiteIamdevelopingandcomparingitwithrelevantregulationsandstandardsto determinewhatappliesandwhatdoesnot.Thegoalistoevaluateandunderstandtheseaspectsrather thanmodifythedesign,focusingonlearningfrompotentialfuturemistakes.Ichosethepurposegroup "shop"forthisassignment.

Thisassignmentrequiredmetocompileallmyknowledge,linkingit withAIADtofindanddocumentrelevantlawsandregulations.During thisprocess,myfocusonActiveFireSafetyandFireEvacuationproved advantageous,givingmeadeeperunderstandingandmakingthetask easier.Unlikepreviousgroupprojects,thiswasanindividualassignment, andIdidmissthepresenceofteammembers.
MychosenPurposeGroupwas"Shop."Shopsaresubjecttovariouslegal provisions,suchasthemandatoryinstallationofsprinklers.Byreviewing theseregulations,Icouldidentifywhatmybuildinglackedand whatit needed,makingthisavaluablelearningexperience.
Onechallengingaspectwascalculatingthestairs.Determiningthewidth ofthestairsbasedontheloadoftheentirespaceandperformingother precisemeasurementswassomewhatdifficultforme.However, after completingallthecalculations,Ifeltapeculiarsenseofsatisfaction. Thebiggestissue,though,wasdesigningthestylescape.Despitegathering alltheinformation,thedesignfeltincomplete,leavingme uneasy. AlthoughIendedupwithasomewhatlackingstylescapethistime,Iam determinedtocreateaperfectonenexttime.
Beforeundertakingthismodule,Ihonestlythoughtitwouldbeawaste oftime.IbelievedIalreadykneweverythingabouttheindustryandhad internalizedallthenecessaryknowledgethroughmyinternship.However, thiswasallmyarroganceandillusion.IrealizedIknewnothingabout laws,regulations,andcontracts.Infact,Istillfeelquiteignorant.Ihave merelyobservedandlearned,butIdon'tfeelthatIhavetrulymadeanyof thisknowledgemyown.
Throughthisopportunity,though,IhavelearnedwhatIneedtoconsider whenattemptingsomethingintheinteriordesignindustry.Thereisa significantdifferencebetweenhavingexperiencedsomethingevenonce andneverhavingexperienceditatall.Therefore,Iconsideritagreat fortunetohavetakenthismodule.
Despitethemanydifficultiesandfrustrations,andrecognizingthatmy workmaynotbethebest,Ibelievethereisalwayssomethingtobegained fromtheseexperiences.Iamtrulygratefulforthevaluablelessonsand enthusiasmsharedbyAr.Yasmin,whotaughtusevenwhenwewere unmotivated.MybatchmatesandIhavelearnedsomuch, andweare sincerelythankfulforthat.
