INTRODUCTION

Becoming
an
interior
designer
is
challenging,
not
only
because
of
the demanding
work
but
also
due
to
the
complex
legalities
and
contracts
that can
be
daunting.
Honestly,
I
initially
thought
that
being
an
interior designer
would
simply
involve
drawing
plans
and
doing
3D
work. However,
there
was
much
more
waiting
for
me.

As
a
newcomer
to
the
professional
world,
it
is
difficult
to
be
well-versed
in these
laws
and
contracts.
This
is
why
the
Professional
Practice
module exists.

In
this
module,
we
were
divided
into
teams
to
study
various
topics, enhancing
our
teamwork
skills
through
group
assignments
while
learning about
different
legal
and
contractual
knowledge.
At
the
same
time,
we had
to
design
and
present
what
we
learned
to
teach
other
students, effectively
hitting
two
birds
with
one
stone.

The
main
goal
of
this
module
is
to
allow
us
to
self-study
and
acquire essential
knowledge
for
our
future
careers.
It
is
not
about
mastering everything
but
about
recalling
the
relevant
laws
when
needed.

In
my
opinion,
this
module
is
one
of
the
most
practically
beneficial
subjects for
students.
It
helps
us
plan
how
to
approach
the
future
of
the
interior design
industry.

ASSIGNMENT 1 - LEGISLATIVE & REGULATIVE DIMENSION OF INTERIOR DESIGN

As
future
graduate
interior
designers,
it
is
essential
for
students
to
have
a
comprehensive understanding
and
vocabulary
related
to
contractual,
professional,
and
legislative
terms
that
are
used daily
with
clients,
contractors,
peers,
authorities,
and
the
general
public.

This
assignment
introduces
the
standards
of
Professional
Conduct
and
Practice.
It
aims
to
outline
the general
professional
behavior
and
self-discipline
expected
of
interior
designers
registered
with
the Board
of
Architects
(Lembaga
Arkitek
Malaysia).

Students
are
required
to
reference
documents
that
are
closely
related
to
the
legal
and
regulatory framework
in
practice,
such
as
the
Architects
Act
1967,
Architects
Rules
1996,
Uniform
Building
By-Laws 1984,
PAM/MIID
Contract,
and
other
regulatory
provisions
relevant
to
the
profession.

Active
Fire
Safety
&
Fire
Evacuation

Our
group
was
assigned
the
topic
of
active
fire
safety
and
fire
evacuation
for
this
assignment.
We focused
on
detailed
aspects
of
fire
safety
regulations
and
covered
various
legal
knowledge
found
in
the Uniform
Building
By-Laws.
Additionally,
we
had
to
create
a
group
stylescape
that
aligned
with
the

The
first
assignment
in
the
professional
practice
module
was
honestly overwhelming
to
keep
up
with.
Before
the
module
started,
I
wondered why
this
was
necessary
after
finishing
an
internship.
I
even
thought
this should
be
taken
before
the
internship.
However,
those
thoughts
were completely
shattered
as
I
worked
on
this
assignment.

The
most
important
aspect
of
this
assignment
was
the
legal
information.
I focused
on
Active
Fire
Protection,
and
the
more
I
researched,
the
more
I realized
the
countless
detailed
regulations
that
exist.
This
threw
me
into
a dilemma.
We
couldn't
include
all
the
provisions
in
our
stylescape,
but selecting
only
a
few
made
the
information
very
limited
and
oversimplified. Bridging
this
gap
was
supposed
to
be
our
and
my
teammates'
skill,
but unfortunately,
we
failed
to
do
that
effectively.
Additionally,
our
lack
of familiarity
with
creating
a
stylescape
led
to
several
trial
and
error
issues.

I
found
that
I
gained
more
from
this
assignment
after
completing
it
than while
working
on
it.
During
the
process,
it
was
hard
to
grasp
what
was what.
I
was
merely
trying
to
survive
the
flood
of
information.
However, after
finishing
the
assignment
and
looking
at
it
from
a
distance,
I
realized how
much
I
had
missed
and
how
valuable
the
information
I
had
absorbed became.

ASSIGNMENT 2 - KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WEEK

This
assignment
offers
students
the
chance
to
learn
from
invited
speakers
from
various
countries
and companies,
providing
a
broad
understanding
of
professional
practices.
Students
can
register
for multiple
webinars,
choosing
lectures
that
align
with
their
interests
and
goals.

Additionally,
forums
allow
students
to
share
ideas
with
peers,
gaining
new
perspectives
and knowledge.
This
combination
of
webinars
and
forums
equips
students
with
practical
insights
and
a diverse
skill
set
for
their
future
careers.

time,

given.
Each
student

Compliance
Certificate (CCC)
is
an
essential
legal
document
in Malaysia,
confirming
that
a
building
project complies
with
approved
plans,
codes,
and safety

It
is
mandatory
to
obtain
a CCC
before
a
property
can
be
legally
occupied, ensuring
public
safety.
CCC
is
relevant
for interior
designers
as
it
confirms
safety
and compliance.
Typically,
architects
or
the Principal
Submitting
Person
(PSP)

of
Building
Plans
(BP)
and
CCC
to local

When

This
assignment
was
an
opportunity
for
me
to
expand
my
knowledge.
It involved
attending
lectures
on
topics
of
my
choice
and
summarizing
them in
a
mindmap
format,
which
was
a
very
appealing
task
for
me.
Various companies
and
universities
shared
extensive
knowledge
on
how
to
brand oneself
and
plan
for
the
future
after
graduation.

Not
wanting
to
waste
this
opportunity,
I
attended
not
only
the
three mandatory
webinars
but
also
the
three
additional
ones
I
could
choose freely,
listening
intently
and
taking
detailed
notes.
Some
lectures
were simple
enough
for
me
to
understand
but
still
informative,
while
others required
a
higher
level
of
expertise
that
I
found
challenging
to
grasp. Nevertheless,
all
the
lectures
were
highly
beneficial.

Honestly,
the
forums
were
quite
disappointing.
The
topics
were interesting,
and
I
was
eager
to
showcase
my
knowledge,
but
my
peers' responses
felt
robotic,
almost
as
if
they
were
using
the
latest
ChatGPT. Despite
this
disappointment,
the
experience
was
still
valuable.
Engaging
in discussions
and
sharing
ideas
with
others
was
a
significant
challenge
for someone
as
reserved
as
me,
but
it
was
worth
the
effort.

This
assignment
allowed
me
to
reflect
on
myself
and
absorb
various knowledge.
The
time
invested
in
this
process
has
enriched
my understanding
and
laid
a
foundation
for
my
future.

ASSIGNMENT 3 - FUTURE PRACTICE (FORMATION OF IDCP)

This
assignment
sets
the
scenario
for
students
to
to
re-imagine
and
re-conceptualize
the
ideal architectural
practice
of
the
future.
Participants
are
encouraged
to
consider
various
challenges
often faced
by
architects/designers
and
propose
solutions,
and
innovative
business
models.

In
deciding
the
desired
business
context,
students
need
to
evaluate
critically
the
data
obtained
in Project
1.
In
doing
this
assignment,
students
will
be
clearer
of
their
own
vision
and
mission
in
forming their
own
design
company
within
the
business
context.
This
is
achieved
through
reflection
of
one’s
own action
and
learning
in
applying
effective
business
practices.

This
time,
we
were
given

assignment
that
builds

the

task
involves
analyzing
the
structures
of different
businesses
and
creating

hypothetical
company.

goal
is
to
meticulously
analyze
and develop
the
components,
necessary
laws,
and
conditions
for
the
business,
simulating
the
process
of establishing
a
real
company.
This
is
also
a
group
project,
emphasizing
the
importance
of
teamwork
and the
proper
acquisition
and
organization
of
information.

I
found
this
assignment
to
be
incredibly
fascinating.
It
gave
me
the feeling
of
being
a
CEO
running
a
large
company,
allowing
me
to
deeply understand
the
philosophy
behind
establishing
a
business
and
the
key considerations
involved
in
its
operation.

Although
I
couldn't
fully
immerse
myself
due
to
the
need
to
pay
close attention
to
the
relevant
laws
and
regulations,
the
assignment
still
made me
feel
like
I
was
a
CEO.
The
most
impactful
part
of
the
project
was focusing
on
the
company's
services
and
employee
welfare.

I
wanted
to
bring
innovation
that
doesn't
yet
exist
in
Malaysia
by researching
various
laws
and
real-life
cases.
Although
I
had
to
make
some realistic
compromises,
such
as
experimenting
with
a
four-day
workweek,
I still
felt
like
an
innovative
CEO.

It
felt
less
like
an
assignment
and
more
like
engaging
in
a
really
enjoyable activity.
I
found
myself
wishing
for
more
projects
like
this
that
are conducted
in
such
an
engaging
manner.

ASSIGNMENT 4 - BY-LAW APPLICATION AND PREREQUISITES FOR BUILDING PLAN SUBMISSION

This
assignment
allows
students
to
apply
their
knowledge
gained
in
Project
1
into
their
individual projects
in
AIAD2.
Each
regulatory,
legislative,
and
technical
provision
must
be
illustrated
into
an informative
report
presentation
with
dimensions,
drawings
(including
isometrics)
and
materials
where necessary.
Students
will
be
assessed
based
on
their
ability
to
explain
and
apply
knowledge
and understanding
to
their
Final
AIAD2
Project.

This
exercise
serves
as
a
working
paper
for
AIAD.
Students’
design
shall
not
change
or
be
influenced
by the
laws
due
to
both
module’s
time
constrain
factor,
instead,
it
acts
as
an
overall
guideline
to
address the
next
forthcoming
steps
before
finalizing
the
building
plans.
Thus,
students
are
asked
to
identify non-compliance
by
marking
an
(x)
and
describing
the
next
course
of
action
for
design
rectification.
This rigorous
process
is
essential
to
ensure
compliance
with
the
law
before
the
drawings
can
be
submitted to
the
Local
Authority.

As
explained
above,
this
assignment
is
linked
with
AIAD
2.
The
task
involves
specifying
the
purpose group
for
the
site
I
am
developing
and
comparing
it
with
relevant
regulations
and
standards
to determine
what
applies
and
what
does
not.
The
goal
is
to
evaluate
and
understand
these
aspects
rather than
modify
the
design,
focusing
on
learning
from
potential
future
mistakes.
I
chose
the
purpose
group "shop"
for
this
assignment.

REFLEC TION

This
assignment
required
me
to
compile
all
my
knowledge,
linking
it with
AIAD
to
find
and
document
relevant
laws
and
regulations.
During this
process,
my
focus
on
Active
Fire
Safety
and
Fire
Evacuation
proved advantageous,
giving
me
a
deeper
understanding
and
making
the
task easier.
Unlike
previous
group
projects,
this
was
an
individual
assignment, and
I
did
miss
the
presence
of
team
members.

My
chosen
Purpose
Group
was
"Shop."
Shops
are
subject
to
various
legal provisions,
such
as
the
mandatory
installation
of
sprinklers.
By
reviewing these
regulations,
I
could
identify
what
my
building
lacked
and
what
it needed,
making
this
a
valuable
learning
experience.

One
challenging
aspect
was
calculating
the
stairs.
Determining
the
width of
the
stairs
based
on
the
load
of
the
entire
space
and
performing
other precise
measurements
was
somewhat
difficult
for
me.
However,
after completing
all
the
calculations,
I
felt
a
peculiar
sense
of
satisfaction. The
biggest
issue,
though,
was
designing
the
stylescape.
Despite
gathering all
the
information,
the
design
felt
incomplete,
leaving
me
uneasy. Although
I
ended
up
with
a
somewhat
lacking
stylescape
this
time,
I
am determined
to
create
a
perfect
one
next
time.

CONCLU -SION

Before
undertaking
this
module,
I
honestly
thought
it
would
be
a
waste of
time.
I
believed
I
already
knew
everything
about
the
industry
and
had internalized
all
the
necessary
knowledge
through
my
internship.
However, this
was
all
my
arrogance
and
illusion.
I
realized
I
knew
nothing
about laws,
regulations,
and
contracts.
In
fact,
I
still
feel
quite
ignorant.
I
have merely
observed
and
learned,
but
I
don't
feel
that
I
have
truly
made
any
of this
knowledge
my
own.

Through
this
opportunity,
though,
I
have
learned
what
I
need
to
consider when
attempting
something
in
the
interior
design
industry.
There
is
a significant
difference
between
having
experienced
something
even
once and
never
having
experienced
it
at
all.
Therefore,
I
consider
it
a
great fortune
to
have
taken
this
module.

Despite
the
many
difficulties
and
frustrations,
and
recognizing
that
my work
may
not
be
the
best,
I
believe
there
is
always
something
to
be
gained from
these
experiences.
I
am
truly
grateful
for
the
valuable
lessons
and enthusiasm
shared
by
Ar.
Yasmin,
who
taught
us
even
when
we
were unmotivated.
My
batchmates
and
I
have
learned
so
much,
and
we
are sincerely
thankful
for
that.
