MIZUNO LAUNCHES CRAZE SLOW PITCH BATS Powerful, Durable, and Affordable Bat Aims to Be Top Seller Norcross, GA (April 6, 2010) – Mizuno, one of the leading slow pitch bat manufacturers in the world, is scheduled to launch the new Craze Slow Pitch Bat Series in May, 2010. This revolutionary new bat from Mizuno provides the slowpitch athlete with one of the most powerful, durable, and affordable bats on the market. The Craze slow pitch bat is available in both ASA and USSSA models. Both the Craze and Craze Xtreme (USSSA model) bats have a 13 inch barrel. Craze bats are uniquely made with Black Array Carbon, a state of the art carbon fiber. Black Array Carbon provides the perfect balance of durability and feel, while offering explosive distance and ultimate control. All Craze bats are hand rolled in their initial development stage, before they are machine rolled in order for a smooth finish. A new angled seaming process eliminates any edge inconsistencies in the bat, which will considerably reduce any soft spots or cracks, denying ultimate performance. During the research and development process of the Craze, durability tests were conducted at Mizuno’s revolutionary Sozo™ Studios. Craze bats were repeatedly tested, simulating the most extreme game-like conditions. The durability of the Craze proved to be extremely high, as the Craze™ bats show dramatic improvement from previous Mizuno models before any signs of damage occurred. Mizuno is not offering any warranty options on Craze bats, something the company has never done before. To demonstrate their confidence in the durability and performance of the Craze bat, and to ward off consumers fears of the non-warranty, Mizuno has set the suggested retail price at $150.00. This makes the Craze one of the most affordable bats on the slow pitch bat market.

The Buzz about the Mizuno Craze:

Softball Today • March/April 2010

“The Craze is an unbelievable bat. I was originally concerned about the non-warranty of the Craze. However, when my team and I tested the bat repeatedly, our fears were erased. I don’t believe that consumers should be concerned about the non-warranty at all. I have over 900 swings on the Craze and it's still in perfect condition, and the performance is unreal. This is an outstanding bat, at an outstanding value.” - Tom Suchora, Team Sales Rep for Extra Innings, Utica, MI

Washington Huskies Huskies Show Teeth Out Of The Gate 30-3 Overall, 2-1 PAC-10 (As of April 8, 2010) SEATTLE, WA—The Huskies can remember it as if it just happened. Living, breathing, feeling, dreaming and tasting the moment they became NCAA Division I champions. Now, opening the season nearly flawless and with high expectations, these ladies have the hunger and drive required to repeat and, once again, become national champions. Senior pitcher and 2009 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Danielle Lawrie was the talk of the team as the season came to a close last year and she has returned to the Huskies’ circle for her final year of collegiate play. Joining the pitching veteran is freshman pitcher Baily Harris, who has some big shoes to fill. Thus far, she has exceeded expectations. "We expect Baily Harris to come in and carry a significant load of the pitching in her freshman year,” said Washington Huskies Head Coach Heather Tarr. “She is a crafty righthanded pitcher and a great student. We look forward to seeing Baily's impact on our program on the field and in the classroom." Harris improved to 8-1 on the season in a great offensive and defensive display against Seattle University March 14. Her impressive efforts thus far have earned the confidence and support of the rest of her team. Outside of the circle, sophomore infielder Niki Williams and sophomore outfielder Kimi Pohlman also return as offensive powerhouses for the team. This season, “Pookie,” as many of her teammates call her, has not failed to impress. Leading the team during the March 14 weekend, Pohlman batted a .533 (8-for-15) with six RBIs and three stolen bases. Sitting atop the national rankings, the Huskies are expected to win the PAC-10 title this season. Washington is carrying a near flawless run with the exception of one loss to Utah State in the Campbell Cartier Classic in late February. Since then, the team has gone on a terror, producing a 17-game winning streak and momentum that is maintaining national attention and building self-confidence. “We want to win it just as badly as we did last year and I know we have a team that is capable of doing it again,” said senior outfielder Bailey Stenson. “Our biggest opponent on our schedule is the one we play all season: ourselves.”

Georgia Bulldogs Older, Wiser Bulldogs Promising Early On 28-8 Overall, 6-6 SEC (As of April 8, 2010) ATHENS, GA—Playoff nerves could not creep into the minds of a relatively young Georgia Bulldogs softball team last year. What was labeled a possible rebuilding year at the beginning of the season blossomed into a legitimate run at the national title. Much of the same potent offense and defense has returned to keep the university’s streak of playoff appearances alive. The Bulldog’s circle is home to juniors Sarah McCloud, Katie Murphy, Alanna Hadley and sophomore Erin Arevalo. During her freshman season in 2009, Arevalo made nine appearances, including one against the Washington Huskies in the Women’s College World Series, and had a 5.15 ERA. Having always prided themselves on their young talent, it’s no surprise Arevalo has seen her fair share of the load early this year. At the Bulldog Invitational in Mid-March, Arevalo pitched a no-hitter with Katie Murphy against Middle Tennessee. Arevalo hurled the first four innings, improving to 11-1 on the season. Considering the team has only competed in 22 games thus far, Arevalo has been called often to lead the team to victory. With Georgia’s sweeping of the first SEC Pitcher of the Week honors, Arevalo has claimed two of them. The potent offense has also returned to compliment the strength in the Bulldog circle. During the Bulldog Invitational, the team batted a combined .417, including seven home runs and outscored their opponents 41-2. In addition, they also stole 29 bases to increase their season total to three swipes short of their season total last year. Four Bulldogs batted over .400—all returners—for the tournament to devastate the competition and secure the tournament title. Junior Taylor Schlopy hit .727 (8-for-11), sophomore Kristyn Sandberg cracked a .692 (9-for-13), junior Laura Trout batted a .556 (5-for9) and Brianna Hesson swung a .417 (5-for-12). With the right combination of veterans and incoming players, the Bulldogs sit sixth in the national rankings and look promising to produce a sequel to last year’s run toward the title. The Bulldogs’ late-game three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning pushed them by No. 6 Georgia Tech on April 7, notching their fifth win in their last seven games.

ANN ARBOR, MI—Wolverines, according to experts, have been known to have two speeds: fast and stop. Strikingly similar to the furry animal the University of Michigan calls Wolverines Learn From Last Year their mascot, the Wolverine softball team has the same 28-5 Overall, 5-0 Big Ten (As of April 8, 2010) speed and agility. Finishing last year fourth in the national rankings, the ladies from the north made a respectable and threatening run toward the national title. Much of that same talent has returned—a consistent trend in the top teams of this season. "We have a lot of people returning from last year, and last year we went on losing streaks or had a lot tough games where we were down and had to fight back,” said senior pitcher Nikki Nemitz. “This team knows how to win. The game's not over until the seventh inning and third out. We're used to fighting back; I think it's just something we're good at." Reinforcing the circle in 2010 are senior lefthanded pitcher Nikki Nemitz, junior right-hander Jordan Taylor and freshman right-hander Stephanie Speierman. Taylor has claimed three Pitcher of the Week awards so far this season and is poised to see plenty more where that came from. Nemitz can not only blast in an unstoppable pitch, but she suits up for the offensive squad as well. "That's why I love softball,” said Nemitz. “I love being a hitting pitcher. I get to help myself and contribute to the team on both ends of the game. It felt good. It feels good to The Wolverines have rocked the Big Ten thus far with their undefeated run. They unleashed finally be back where I'm at and help my team out." During a massive 12-hit, 15-run domination of Wisconsin on April 3. the same Red and Black Tournament, Nemitz also batted .800 at the plate (4-for-5) with six RBIs. Senior right fielder Angela Findlay also returns to the University of Michigan this year. She went 2-for-3 at the plate with 2 RBIs in the game against Hofstra. Junior first baseman Dorian Shaw, who picked up her first Player of the Week accolade this season, matched a career best performance during the same contest. "She is a presence,” said Michigan Wolverines Head Coach Carol Hutchins. “We're starting to see teams pitch around her, and she's doing a good job of managing the zone and taking walks. We'll take her on base. Anything they give us, we'll take. So, we're pleased with that in the middle of the lineup, especially when we've got someone like Nikki hot behind her. That's a good combination to have." The Wolverines are positive about the rest of this season and are expected to be in the thick of it when it comes time to dance.

Michigan Wolverines

29-9 Overall, 12-4 SEC (As of April 8, 2010) TUSCALOOSA, AL—Relative to last season, it was starting to look as if the tide was rolling out on Alabama. After coming so close to making it to the championship dance, fans and critics were sure that the Crimson Tide would be back for another cut-throat season. Then they started to drop like a rock in the first few national polls of the year. Within one week, the team fell from second to ninth in the national standings. Was this a sign of things to come? Hardly. Despite the rocky start, Alabama has since settled and focused on the only thing that matters between now and May—softball. In fact, they drew first blood in the SEC when they bested Georgia in a three-game series 0-3, 8-5 and 13-4. In the circle, the double zeros return, almost like eyes constantly watching you. Junior pitcher and NFCA First-Team All-American Kelsi Dunne is back, supported by also returning senior powerhouse Charlotte Morgan, sophomore Amanda Locke and freshman Lauren Sewell. Sewell, who graduated from Pembroke Pines Charter High School, is 5-0 on the season with a 2.02 ERA. Certainly an impressive start for the young freshman. Dunne is 7-4 on the season with a 3.03 ERA. The offensive firepower is where the Crimson Tide really begins to measure up. In the March 14 game against their SEC counterparts, the Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama belted four home runs to blow the lead wide open and dash the Bulldogs' hopes for making a comeback. Four players are batting over .300, including two over .400. Freshman infielder Kayla Braud is currently batting .463 with 9 RBIs, Sophomore first baseman Cassie Reilly-Boccia is swinging a .434 with 11 RBIs, sophomore catcher Olivia Gibson is cranking a .360 with 8 RBIs and senior infielder Alex Blewitt is batting a .306 with 13 RBIs. As the Crimson Tide set sail for an action-packed season, they look to gain back the respect they lost early in the season. With a couple of conference wins under their belt, be prepared to look for them when it comes time for playoffs.

Late inning sprints to the finish allowed the Crimson Tide to tally two wins against No. 14 LSU Tigers on April 7.

Sara Buchholz, a senior at Gulliver Prep in Miami will pitch for the University of North Carolina.

By Jeff Berlinicke They have that glare, that look of intimidation. Everyone knows who they are. It’s usually an icy look that tells an opposing coach that there’s no way they are leaving with a win. They have fastballs that pop into the catcher’s glove with a sound that can be heard from across the field. They have risers that jump and changeups that frustrate even the most confident of hitters. Elite Pitchers are a rare commodity in prep softball, but the ones that stand out are

heading to some of the biggest softball colleges in the country. Most of the top pitchers expect to pitch as a freshman. Since most colleges trot out their ace on a regular bases, it’s not easy for a freshman to sign on with a team knowing that there’s already a top gun. College coaches that entered this season with a senior starter did their homework, and here’s some of the best that they found.

Sara Buchholz (Gulliver Prep High, Miami) Some pitchers like to fire fastballs all night

without any other pitches in the repertoire. Buchholz, a 5-9 senior at Gulliver Prep in Miami, does it exactly opposite. Her approach has worked. She is a threetime Miami Herald pitcher of the year award and is on her way to a fourth. She was also named Puerto Rican softball Athlete of the Year, not to mention countless other trophies and awards that fill her bookshelf. Buchholz, who will pitch for the University of North Carolina next season as a freshman, said she likes to out finesse the opposing batters. “I hate throwing fastballs,’’ Buchholz said. “I like to move my pitches around and not feel like I

(Naples High, Naples, Fla.) Forget the 0.18 ERA during her junior year. It’s the no-hitter Jaclyn Traina threw in the Florida Class 4A Regional Championship game last season that Traina remembers most. That’s because she lost. And the season was over for Naples, which fell to Lake Worth, 21. Naples committed three errors in the seventh inning for the losing margin. ”That hurt and I wanted so bad to get another shot at them my senior year,’’ Traina said. That changed when Florida reclassified the schools into separate divisions, so there’s no chance at getting some revenge in the state playoffs. Traina allowed only three earned runs all of 2009, and she even considered that a let down from 2008 when she registered an ERA of 0.36. Next season she and Naples teammate, second baseman Ryan Iamurri, will play at the University of Alabama. She said she isn’t going without a state title for Naples. Traina impressed the Alabama staff with a variety of pitches. She can bring the heat, but

Dallas Escobedo

(St. Mary’s High School, Phoenix) Dallas Escobedo might be intimidating on the mound at 6-1, but she wasn’t like that at all when it came time to make her college decision. “I’m really just a big baby,’’ Escobedo said when she announced she was staying to home to play at Arizona State University next year. I went with my family and now I get to stay with my family. I got recruited by everyone, but I wanted to stay home. I’m happy.’’ Opposing batters in the Pac-10 won’t be. Escobedo was named the Player of the Year by the Arizona Republic. She won 27 games that first year and struck out more than 500 batters. She hasn’t gone below 400 since as she makes her way through her senior season. Escobedo started playing club softball for the Arizona Hotshots at the age of eight and took the mound the next year and hasn’t wanted to leave it since. Escobedo started her senior year with a no-hitter and a 12-inning perfect game and was batting .400. She has her sights set on big things at Arizona State and she is confident that she can be very productive at the next level.

Arianna Erceg (Palos Verdes High School, Palos Verdes, Ca.) Arianna Erceg signed to play for CaliforniaBerkeley next season even though the Bears already have two starting pitchers returning. She’s a slugging first baseman who just wants to be on the field. First, though, it’s about winning a state title for Palos Verdes. The team has hit roadblocks in the state playoffs the past three years. Palos Verdes won the Bay League softball title last season, but wants to make a deeper run this year. With a roster full of

Division I talent, Erceg said she’d be surprised if the school didn’t pick up some hardware after state championship roll around. “We won the Bay League and that’s really great, but all I care about is going farther,’’ Erceg said. “We don’t just want to win, we plan to win.’’ She throws hard and loves to work the corners with her riser, but a previous back injury forced her to work on her changeup. It’s now one of her best pitches. Erceg knew that she wouldn’t be getting the ball every day when she signed with Cal. The Bears are one of a few top-notch programs that don’t have an ace, but spread the wealth. Erceg said she’d be happy to be in a rotation even though she could have been an everyday pitcher at a lot of schools. “All I ever wanted was to pitch for a Pac-10 school,’’ Erceg said. “I love it at Berkeley and it’s my dream to be there. A rotation might be unusual, but it obviously works for them.’’ Erceg started pitching at the age of 13 when she started throwing for the nationallyknown Orange County Batbusters.

Kaitlin Inglesby (Central Catholic High School, Portland, OR.) Most coaches have to take the first step in the recruiting process. Kaitlin Inglesby wasn’t going to wait. She started reviewing colleges before they got to her first. The mailbox was full after Inglesby starter her own reviewing process, but she knew all along where she wanted to go. She signed with the University of Washington, the top-ranked team in Division I as of March 21. “I wanted to play with the best program out there,’’ Inglesby said. “Washington was perfect for me.’’ Inglesby top pitch is her fastball, but she is able to mix in a curve and a riser. She plays her club ball for the Northwest Wave Gold, which travels throughout Oregon 12 months a year. She suffered a bad wrist injury after getting smashed by a line drive earlier this year, but she’s kept at it. “When I get on the mound, I know that I am in charge,’’ Inglesby said. “I can be loud a lot of the time, but that’s just me. I like the reputation.’’

Softball Today • March/April 2010

Jaclyn Traina

likes to mix it up. Like Buchholz, she isn’t a pitcher to stare down the opposition. She gets by on reputation. She was named the Naples Daily News Softball Player of the Year for the third time last season and is closing in on a fourth. Last year, the numbers were great, but it wasn’t easy. She started the season with a knee injury and didn’t get on pace until the latter end of the season when she put up 24 consecutive scoreless innings.

High School

need to depend on speed. I’ll throw a fastball if I have to, but I don’t like doing. It. I am more of a finesse pitcher and that’s the way I like it. Like most top pitchers, Buchholz exudes confidence. After three straight Player of the Year honors, most of her opponents know who she is and, if they don’t, they do after their first at-bat. “I think they know who I am now,’’ Buchholz said. “If they don’t, they do after the first inning.’’ She’s going to a North Carolina team that has some pitching already and is also bringing in Ashley Bone, a highly recruited pitcher from Nash Central High in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Tar Heels will be loaded with pitching, but Buchholz said she doesn’t mind waiting for her time. “I don’t know if I will start next year, but I love that I will have to compete for time,’’ she said. “I am always up for a good competition and it makes me even better. It brings out the best in me.’’ Buchholz has been playing softball since she turned 5 and is a member of the powerful Miami Stingrays club team. It’s a 12-month game for her, but she has no problem with that. “I never wanted to quit even though I do get tired,’’ Buchholz said. “I love everything about this game. What else would I do?’’

EASTON SPORTS INTRODUCES SPEED BAT LINE TO SLOW-PITCH SOFTBALL VAN NUYS, Calif. (October 19, 2009) – Easton Sports, the industry leader in bat technology, today announced the launch of three new Q4 offerings for slowpitch softball players – including the introduction of Easton’s patented Speed technology to the slow-pitch softball market. Easton’s Synergy Speed BH and Stealth Speed XL headline the additions and bring the same technology that has flourished on the baseball diamond to the softball field, while the aluminum CV12 rounds out the new offerings. The Speed line features Easton’s lightest barrel design ever thanks to a new laser precision manufacturing technique that eliminates material overlap in the barrel, trimming enough excess to reduce mass in the barrel for a lighter MOI (Moment of Inertia) and a faster swing speed. Both Speed bats include Easton’s Focused Flex Handle technology for increased power, while the Synergy Speed utilizes a slightly end loaded barrel for more power through the zone, and Stealth Speed features a balanced swing weight and the largest hitting area in the game. As always, the new line of bats implement Easton’s patented Integrated Matrix Technology (IMX), utilizing the best in materials, design and manufacturing process. The CV12, Easton’s new multi-wall aluminum bat, contains a thin aluminum shell and lightweight composite inner tube, giving it a superior length-to-weight ratio. “With the CV12, Synergy Speed BH and Stealth Speed XL, we’ve brought our Speed baseball technology to slow-pitch softball,” said Matt Arndt, senior vice president of Easton’s baseball/softball division. “I have to say the technology has transitioned very well. These bats will usher slow-pitch into a new era.” The CV12, Synergy Speed BH and Stealth Speed XL meet all ASA, USSSA, NSA, ISA, SSUSA and ISF regulations.

TPS® FASTPITCH INTRODUCES THE H2 HYBRID THE NEXT STEP IN OPTIMIZING COMPOSITE/ALLOY HYBRID DESIGN LOUISVILLE, KY– Louisville Slugger® created stiff handle, large sweet spot composite/alloy hybrid bats when it introduced the popular Exogrid® to baseball. The Exogrid was named baseball product of the year in 2007 and ended up becoming the game’s most popular bat. Now Louisville Slugger is back at the plate with another stiff handle, large sweet spot composite/alloy hybrid bat for top level hitters. But this time it’s in fastpitch with the new 2009 TPS H2 Hybrid®. “The H2 Hybrid’s exclusive design creates a lighter handle transition which means a longer barrel and bigger sweet spot,” said Louisville Slugger product developer James Sass. “The H2 Hybrid builds off the success we had in baseball with Exogrid. It became baseball’s leading bat and the choice of the best hitters.” The H2 Hybrid, with its industry leading ST+20 alloy barrel and 3-X composite handle, seamlessly provides the outstanding performance of a 1-piece stiff handle design. The move to a full 100 percent graphite composite design in the transition area, from handle to barrel, allows for a handle that’s extra stiff because graphite is lighter and stronger than aluminum.

Softball Today • March/April 2010

A stiff handle produces more barrel flex, resulting in maximum trampoline effect and, ultimately, outstanding performance. “The last thing you want at the moment of contact is for your bat handle to flex,” Sass said. “When the handle flexes, the barrel can’t. That reduces trampoline effect. The H2’s stiff handle produces maximum barrel flex for the power all fastpitch hitters seek.” And the barrel’s ST+20 double wall alloy provides outstanding strength and toughness to produce the performance, feel, and sound that top fastpitch players demand.

Suggested retail for the TPS Fastpitch H2 (FP9H2) H2 Hybrid bat is $299.95. TPS STIFFNESS AND STRENGTH = POWER & PERFORMANCE Serious softball players have learned that stiff handled bats are better than bats with handles that bend. Stiff handles mean power and performance, the very reason the majority of Major League Baseball® players today choose stiff handle maple bats over pliable ash. Louisville Slugger TPS’s stiff handle bats create more barrel flex, resulting in maximum trampoline effect and outstanding performance. Louisville Slugger TPS was the first bat maker to recognize that stiffness and strength equals power and performance. It revolutionized fastpitch, slow pitch softball, and baseball with its hi-tech stiff handle technology and strong alloys and composites, first with the popular Catalyst® models.

NEW TRITON™ 3-X COMPOSITE FROM TPS® FASTPITCH BUBBLE TRANSITION CREATES EXTRA STIFFNESS, LARGER SWEET SPOT LOUISVILLE, KY Top level fastpitch players love the new Triton™ bats from Louisville Slugger® TPS®. Initially drawn to the unique 3-piece look and bubble transition, players who’ve stepped to the plate with a Triton have quickly learned that it has an extra stiff handle and a very large sweet spot. Triton is unique because it has a proprietary 3-X Composite design with three composite zones – barrel, handle, and Bubble Transition Zone – all made from 100 percent aerospace grade graphite. These three composite zones allow the barrel and handle to be designed and built as individual units. TPS then brings them together with the revolutionary BT Zone (Bubble Transition Zone) that unites the barrel and handle into a more advanced 1-piece bat. “Triton’s BT Zone links the barrel to the handle, optimizing their relationship,” said Louisville Slugger product developer James Sass. That makes a stiffer and stronger bat for outstanding performance.” With composites, performance and durability are dictated by the angle of the fibers and the wall thickness of the barrel. Louisville Slugger TPS’s high-strength fibers used in the Triton allow for the best angle for performance while keeping the barrel wall thin for maximum flexibility and trampoline effect. “We use multiple layers of aerospace grade graphite. These high-strength thin fibers allow us to use more layers for durability and still design a light, thin wall bat for performance,” Sass said. “Our exclusive computer-designed pattern precisely positions the angles of graphite layers, giving the Triton an extra-long barrel with a huge sweet spot and outstanding performance.” TPS embeds a specially-designed toughened epoxy resin to lock the graphite layers together. That’s what forms Triton’s light, durable thin wall design. This exclusive manufacturing process eliminates air between the graphite layers, giving players the ultimate combination of performance and durability.

REEBOK RELEASES GROUNDBREAKING SOFTBALL EQUIPMENT WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE REEBOK VECTOR O SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL BAT Designed with Reebok’s Patented O-Technology, the Vector O Slow Pitch Softball Bat Allows Hitters to Increase Their Bat Speed CANTON, MA - Reebok introduced the Vector O Slow Pitch Softball Bat, the first softball bat to be infused with Reebok’s patented O-Technology. In concert with Reebok’s Double Wall Composite Barrel, it is arguably the most technologically advanced softball bat in history. Reebok’s revolutionary Vector O Slow Pitch Softball Bat is unlike any other softball bat ever produced. Taking advantage of Reebok’s patented O-Technology, the bat has strategically placed O-ports in the handle, reducing the amount of drag in each swing and allowing hitters to achieve a faster swing speed, which can determine how far a ball travels when hit. In addition, the bat features Reebok’s Double Wall Composite Barrel, which has one of the highest strength material ratios found in the barrel of any bat. When combined with Reebok’s O-Technology, the Vector O Slow Pitch Softball Bat enhances energy transfer back into the ball during ball-bat collisions, allowing for greater power and distance. “We are excited to allow players of all ages to take full advantage of their potential with groundbreaking, top of the line equipment,” said Chris Waldeck, Reebok’s Director, Cleated and Equipment – Team Sports. “We know that softball players run the gamut from weekend warriors to intense tournament players and this bat will improve the performance of those two types of players and everyone in between. The Reebok Vector O Slow Pitch Softball Bat is available in two models, The Vector O Plus and the Vector O. The bats are available at Reebok, com, Eastbay, Play it Again Sports, and other sporting good retailers. Bangkok, Thailand - The Asia Cup is a Men’s SlowPitch Softball series that has spanned 18 years and annually includes 50 teams that represent 15 countries. The events are the true essence of goodwill and competition among the world softball community. The series has a rich history and many top veteran players have participated in the Asia Cup Series. The teams are very prideful and exhibit some of the most amazing fundamental softball skills you may ever witness. The series represents the most skilled players throughout Asia and the Middle East. Additionally, it allows US servicemen and government representatives abroad a place to play softball for 10 months out of the year. The tournaments are very important to the communities where they play. This year‘s first time teams were from Qatar and Kuwait. The Asia Cup also compliments the host cities with social events and awards contributions to local charities that are in need. The Tournament series is played in five countries Manila, Philippines, Jakarta, Indonesia, Tokyo, Japan,

Dubai, UAE, and Bangkok, Thailand. The events are sanctioned by ASA and played in stadium venues with major softball dimensions as seen in the USA. The 50 plus teams play throughout the year and the series championship culminates into the Asia Cup World Championship event held in Bangkok, Thailand. The 405 foot centerfield venues include Queen Sirikit 60th Anniversary Stadium in Thanyaburi and The Royal Bangkok Sports Club in Bangkok. This year’s Marquee Tournament sponsor was Easton Sports USA and Asia. The Asia Cup has not been immune to the current infectious trends of the Bat Doctors without Borders. The Asia Cup Board of Directors like many Associations felt it needed to level the spirit of competition in 2009. The early events were riddled with questionable bats and with no proven method to test illegal equipment on the spot; they decided to make the Asia Cup World Championship in Bangkok a Bring UR Real Skilz event. The event used 18 ASA Brett Helmer Reveal bats supplied by Easton Sports. This allowed the players to focus on their play versus the distractions and

questions that arise from modified bat issues. BISL Director and Asia Cup Board member, Richard Nudera, stated “The players really took to the format and realized embracing the Real Skilz format gave them the opportunity of a level playing field around equipment.” The four day field was set with 18 teams from 13 countries. This group would decide the Asia Cup World Championships. Previous 2009 tournament winners were the early favorites which included Hammers International Korea, Korea Guzzlers, FattBoyz USA, and RBSC/Tilac Thailand. The tournament began with an important 3 game seeding format that culminates into a standard two game elimination bracket that decides The Brett Helmer /Easton Bring UR Real Skilz/ Asia Cup World Championship. The lowest finishing 10 teams are placed into the Governor’s Cup Championship. The 2009 Governor Cup Champions were the Shanghai Beavers-China with a 3-3 record. They were lead by (All Tournament) Dan Lipetzky. The seeding round went as expected with the top 8 teams holding their Championship form and moving into the Asia Cup

Championship bracket. The two-game elimination bracket was now set to determine the Easton Asia Cup World Champion Bangkok. The opening games were won by Big Bamboo #1 Sons and FattBoyz USA in the upper bracket. The winners in the lower portion of the bracket were the Korea Guzzlers and Hammers International-Korea. The Semi-Finals were now set with Korea Guzzlers facing their fellow countrymen Hammers International Korea. The game was very low scoring but went back-n-forth throughout. The large field dimensions and 100 degree heat played a role as homeruns were absent in this game. The game was taken over in the 6th inning when Guzzler’s Greg Zayas, (All Tournament) Mike Jenkins, and Jeff Libengood combined offensively to cap a 4 run offensive inning that holstered the Hammers 7-3. The Hammers were victims of an acrobatic Greg Zayas unassisted double play in the 7th to close the game and the final remained 7-3 Korea Guzzlers. (All Tournament) Elmer Mason was a standout for the losing Hammers International. The Guzzlers were into the winner bracket final. The second Semi-Final pitted the FatBoyz USA against Big Bamboo #1 Sons-Hong Kong. The Big Bamboo was cut down by the FatBoyz buzz saw. The game featured a two inning offensive outburst lead by (All Tournament) Anthony Garnica, Armando Delsi, Chris Chaney (All Tournament), and (Silver Slugger) Chris Edip. It plated 17 runs and with (All Tournament) Al Aspen’s pitching the Big Bamboo had no answer. A few outstanding defensive highlights were four long range rocketed put outs from outfielders (MVP) Nick Robertson and (All Tournament) Chris Edip to FattBoyz catcher Chris Chaney. The overall defense allowed the FattBoyz USA a 17-0 victory and a trip to meet the Korea Guzzlers

in the winner bracket finals. The winners bracket finals was playing host to a packed house. The Queen Sirikit 60th Anniversary Stadium in Thanyaburi was loud and rowdy throughout the Saturday night game. Both teams had a lot of support and this is the type of game the crowds get up for. The game began with an early lead by the Guzzlers over FattBoyz 7-1. A strong offensive start as the Guzzlers chugged past the FattBoyz USA. A flashy first inning as the Guzzlers came up with two outstanding defensive gems by Greg Zayas too. The second, third, and fourth innings proved the deciding frames as FattBoyz rallied behind (All Tournament) Gary Chaney, Thomas LaBrie, (All Tournament) Al Aspen, (All Tournament) Anthony Garnica, and Jason Kreider. Each player failed to make an out and spurred a three inning run barrage. The FattBoyz USA finished the game by outscoring the Guzzlers 16-2. Armando Delsi (SS) and Al Aspen shared the pitching duties to stem the tide. The final score was FattBoyz USA (17) and Korea Guzzlers (9). This sent the Korea Guzzlers to face the Hammers International Korea in the loser bracket finals. The two Korea teams had faced each other earlier and redemption was in the minds of the Hammers. The Korea Guzzlers ran the score up quickly and again leaned on their strong infield defense and pitching. The game quickly was 10-1 in favor of the Guzzlers after 5 innings. The game ended with the Korea Guzzlers winning by the count of 16-2. The Hammer International Korea team earned Third Place. The Korea Guzzlers were headed back to meet the FattBoyz USA in the Championship Finals. The Asia Cup World Championship Bangkok Finals were reconvened at The Royal Bangkok Sports Club in Bangkok. The Guzzlers on Sunday morning certainly

brought their A game. They jumped out quickly on the FattBoyz with an early 6-2 lead through 3 innings. (All Tournament) Mike Jenkins lead the Guzzlers as the offense proved relentless throughout. The FattBoyz were stymied as the game was truly not close. The FattBoyz mounted 4 runs in the fifth inning to close the gap to 9-6 on a triple from (All Tournament/Silver Slugger) Chris Edip. The Korea Guzzlers immediately responded with 3 runs in the sixth inning on a Greg Zayas two run double. The game closed out with the Korea Guzzlers winning by a score of 12-6. This set the stage for a dramatic one game championship for the title. “We wanted to put the pressure on them and forcing an “IF” game was exactly what we were hoping for.” said Manager /President Tom Costello. The “IF” game for The Asia Cup World Championship Bangkok was on! The crowd appeared to rally very strong for the Guzzlers. The FattBoyz supporters were beginning to get very vocal to lift their team up from a frustrating morning loss. The FattBoyz really stepped up in the final game. The first inning proved to be the deciding inning. The FattBoyz USA spun a wheel in the first. They scored 10 runs with all ten batters reaching base to start the game. The Korea Guzzlers answered with 5 runs. The score sat at 10-5 FattBoyz USA leading until the fourth inning when (All Tournament) Al Aspen, (MVP) Nick Robertson, Thomas LaBrie, Armando Delsi, and (All Tournament/Silver Slugger) Chris Edip pushed the FattBoyz to 15-6 lead with key hits to put the game out of reach. The FattBoyz USA closed the game out 15-6 and became The Asia Cup World Champions of Bangkok, in the inaugural Asia Brett Helmer Easton Bring UR Real Skilz World Championship Tournament. The FattBoyz USA won this event with solid defense and a constant dose of offense throughout.

Carolina’s Drives D division champions

Raleigh, NC. - North Carolina USSSA regained the Annual Eddie O Bunn Memorial tournament held March 20, in Raleigh, NC at the Walnut Creek complex. USSSA slow pitch director Johnny Blizzard, wanted to attract additional teams by renaming the tournament to the “Eddie O Bunn Six Shooter” and therefore change the tournament format to a six game guarantee. Once the tournament was announced and promoted it filled up with in a matter of weeks. Within a short period of time the director was contacted by over 70 teams that all wanted to commit to participating in his prestigious tournament however tournament director Johnny Blizzard had to turn down a multitude of teams as his available field limitation only allowed him to accept a maximum of 48 teams. Teams traveled from Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina and across North Carolina to compete in four separate divisions. The tournament was divided up with 8 teams in the C, 16 D teams, 16 E teams and 8 Rec/E

division teams. The tournament action commenced at 9am on Saturday, March 20 and concluded on Sunday evening. In the Men’s C Division, Team B&B/Sears/O’Neal Law Firm and Cedar Creek met in the Winner’s bracket final, with Team B&B/Sears/O’Neal Law Firm prevailing. However Team East Coast Elite would not be denied as they battled all the way through the loser’s bracket to win six straight games on Sunday enroute to capturing the competitive Men’s C Division. In the Men’s D division, Team Carolina Driver and Gameday Marketing battled to the winner’s bracket finals, with Team Carolina Drive advancing to capture the Men’s D championship. In the Men’s E bracket, seventeen teams played over 100 games and when the final out was called Team N&L Softball out scored Team C-N-B Softball for the men’s E title. In the Men’s Rec/E division, seven teams battled their way through the round robin bracket. Team Rudino’s played near flawless on defense in their final two outings as they double dipped Team Triangle Turf Management for the E championship. The tournament format was a round robin with three games in each pool. Then teams were

seeded into bracket play using a three game guarantee bracket. The round robin bracket winners had plenty to smile about as they not only advanced forward in the tournament but they also received two cases of Myoplex Protein Shakes, with the runners up also receiving one case of Myoplex. Additionally, bracket winners received gift certificates. All teams on hand were unanimous in agreeing that the tournament was well run and went smoothly front start to finish. In addition to the tournament action State Director, Andy Richards, hosted a Homerun Derby with thirty-two participants all swinging for the fences and a Worth Resmondo Titan Bat on the line for the long ball winner. Lee Gold from Team B&B/Sears/O’Neal Law firm came away victorious as he was able to slam seven home runs out of ten swings. Gold later stated, “It is a lot harder to hit homeruns when you have over hundred people all watching you hit”. If you missed out on this tournament there is more to come as North Carolina USSSA will be hosting another six game guarantee at Walnut Creek in May for Memorial Day.
