ALBERT’S BATHHOUSE

Site Location: Albert Island, United Kingdom Year: 2021 Client: Local Community, Airport passengers, Couples, wider London population

Albert’s Bathhouse is located on Albert Island, a postindustrial site at the very edge of London in proximity to LDN City Airport. This man-made island is currently characterized by warehouses and its uncultivated areas, the island will soon undergo a comprehensive redevelopment.

This a ‘meanwhile’ project that aims to return this piece of land to the local community and wider London population, that can benefit from it the most. It’s architecture aims to cultivate,nourish and instigate connections between people, the city and the environment. Exploration of shifting edge conditions and relationship of water to solid ground is explored throughout the project.

The building is positioned east to west to enable the opportunity of receiving maximum hours of sunlight during the day. In addition, the design of the structure is informed by the context of the site. It is lifted on stilts due to River Thames having high and low extremes of tidal changes throughout different times of day and year.

Main Concept is that each floor of the Bathhouse represents a step through a 3 step Cleanse: Ground Floor-Outer body cleanse-Ritual of Bathing 1st Floor- Inner mind Cleanse-Ritual of Meditating 2nd&3rd Floor- Inner Body Cleanse-Ritual of drinking Tea Ramp is used for both diasabled and non disabled visitors to be able to get up from the walkway to my structure and above defence flood wall, boat access is also available when the tide is high.

After exploring tidal patterns at different times of the day and year at my chosen site on Albert Island, I aknowledge that River Thames goes through low and high extremes throughout the day, however no matter how weak the tide is at high tide it still goes over 5.3 m which is the ground line of my site.

This study aids my architectural process as it makes me aware of the Flood risks when it comes to designing my structure. Solution to that would be to intergrate platform sub structure deck into the proposal, which will hold up my structure and mitigate risks of flooding.

Here I am exploring different forms of openings/skylights and how each differently gets light into the space.

GLULAM TIMER The aim of the design when choosing the materials was to be concious of the envionmental and ecological factors. My structural elements such as glulam timber columns and crosslam walls are all prefabricated elements which makes it much easier and faster when assembling the structure on the site and more importantly causes less waste on the site. This structure is modular therefore it can be assembled and disassembled again at a new location.

Timber is a recycling material and therefore to have even more low impact on the environmet I will be sourcing my timber near my site.

RIPARIAN FUTURES: THAMES RIVER LAB

Site Location: Albert Island, United Kingdom Year: 2021 Client: Scientists(biologists,geographers,marine biologers),university students of UEL,primary school children and the local community.

Uncovering ideas and predictions for future living or imagined future scenarios is the aim of the project.

What will our architectural future look like? What our city and this island might be like in 10,30 & even 50 years’ time?

It is predicted that in 10, 30, 50 years water levels will rise drastically, therefore the architecture will have to adapt to these natural changes. This can be achieved in 2 ways. First one being a constructive way of uplifting the structure such as using Stilts or Piles. Second way is to move architectural structures on the water using decking and pontoons(plastic boxes filled with air to keep structure floating. Both have already been built in a place such as Netherlands.The programme is dived into 3 different structures.

Floating School This structure is located on the water where its floating due to the use of pontoons (plastic containers filled with air) and decking. As the natural tide levels change throughout the day the structure moves up and down with it. The structure is attached to the pillars of the pier and therefore it will not float away. The main users of this structure would be the local Primary school’s children and their tutors that would be doing workshops and learning about river tide levels as well as exploring the foreshore at the time of low tide.

Caffe & Library Key spaces include inside and outside dining area, social space and silent study space for students from University of East London(Docklands campus) could use along with the other users.

The Lab Scientists work on the ground floor of this structure to perform experiments, do extensive research and have meetings to speak about discoveries made from their research platforms(Global warming ponds,water flood channels and float labs). These 3 platforms are facing each one of the 3 labs to make investigations more practical. Whilst on the 1st floor is the lab observatory from which the students can come and watch the experiments being made without disturbing the scientists.

The structures that are on the land are risen to a +1m height and therefore are using that steel foundation structure to protect the building from future flooding but when the water levels exceed that level they will be able to be put on pontoons and float too.

The series of buildings is organized respectfully to the profile and shape of the site as well as the existing building on site(The church). Furthermore, whilst organizing 3 architectural structures I have codsidered their function and program and the needs of each space. By having 3 structures on one site I created an open constructive tunnel used to connect structures to one another by having that be way of circulating from one structure to another on the ground floor. For the 1st floor I designed an open walkway that is taken to go from caffe & library and floating school to the 1st floor of River Lab which is Lab observatory. The site is devided into active zones and relax green areas.

UniverCity Student Living: THE STREET Site Location: University of Westminster Harrow Campus, London, United Kingdom Year: 2022 Client: University Students

This project is a development of a prototype for experimental living for students of University of Westminster on Harrow Campus. Exploration of visionary and everyday ideas of human mutual living, spatial representation in gradients of privacy, thresholds to communal spaces, as well as relationship to nature and landscape takes places throughout the project.

Key Aspirations for the UniverCity student living were the expansion of social interactions, as well as promoting well-being to improve mental and physical health of the students, whilst exploring the relationship between sustainable architecture and ecology.

These student living blocks include two bedroom typologies, a single room and a double room along with communal areas which include Kitchen spaces and Laundry rooms.Each room has its own private terrace for students to get air and sunlight, which can boosts their health.

Architectural response to the social aspect and well-being of students was created by adding urban design elements to the programme of the project for people of the campus to interact with together whilst being outdoors in nature. These include the street,an amphitheatre(meeting point), the pavillions for studying, exhibition space,the caffe and the market.

In this urban design concept,the implementation of sustainable and recycable materials was crucial for the sustainability aspect of the proposal. In addition, the autonomy is achieved through the use of water drainage system (the water is collected from the roof to the filtration tanks) and through the Photovoltaic panels.

To establish a connection between the living blocks and its surrounding area a green roof is placed on top of the communal areas( kitchen and laundry room) due to ecological,technical and aesthetical factors.

The Assembly of the project is simplified by using precut materials and prefabricated modules.

Interviewing a wide range of local students and staff about their needs and aspirations was the basis for concept and programmatic development. These participatory activities promote a deeper understanding of on-site needs creating an awareness of the complex relationships.

By understanding my own movement and needs in my routine as a student, as well as limitations and possibilities, it gave me more understanding towards what bedroom typologies I wish to create for Students of Harrow Campus. Thresholds between private and public is an important aspect for this project and therefore I am defining that in my own space.
