“It Takes an Exceptional City to Build an Extraordinary New Neighborhood” -The 78

There are 77 neighborhoods in Chicago. There will soon be The 78th. Stretching along half a mile of riverfront, The 78 encompasses an impressive 62-acre area poised to seamlessly integrate new residences, commercial ventures, academic pursuits, and outdoor recreational spaces, forming an innovative neighborhood.

Harmony Heights, located in the south bound of The 78, is an intergeneration residential and commercial building. Designed with the idea of different generations living together in balance and unity; in harmony.

THE BIG IDEA

The design of Harmony Heights began with 3 categories: Environment, People and Building.

Environment: In this category we focused on the word: Regenerate. Regeneration encompasses design strategies and practices that actively contribute to the revitalization and restoration of the natural ecosystems and habitats in The 78.

People: We focused on the word: Harmony. The concept of Harmony captures the idea of different generations living together in balance.

Building: We focused on the word: Clarity. This concept centers on architectural transparency and integrity, ensuring the prominent display of the building’s structure.

02: BORN TO CREATE

Milton Berle once said, “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.” We believe that if opportunity doesn’t knock, you create a networking hub for you and your community. That is how BTC, Born to Create, started.

Located in downtown Chicago, in front of the Harold Washington Library, BTC intends to serve as an addition to the existing library but also create new programs for the entrepreneur community.

Entrepreneurship is a challenging journey, full of ups and downs and valuable lessons at every turn. At BTC we want spaces for dreamers, fighters, and creative individuals of all backgrounds to pursue their passions.

THE BIG IDEA

It all began with the idea of a habitat, where we can imagine ourselves pursuing our careers, and starting our own businesses. We wanted to create spaces where you can get lost in the process, from networking and researching ideas to brainstorming and actually launching your own business.

PROGRAM

Network: This area serves as a fully public open space, providing a platform for entrepreneurs to display their products, with the potential for hosting a bazaar to showcase their offerings.

Research: This floor houses the public library, offering a space dedicated to exploration and discovery, where individuals can seek inspiration.

Create: Featuring a maker space, this floor is designed for the conception and execution of ideas, allowing innovators to develop and bring their concepts to life.

Apply: In this floor, you’ll find rental offices and a dedicated legal team to assist in further developing your company, making it a space where businesses can expand and thrive.

THE HUBS

The hubs take center stage in the building, embodying connectivity and collaboration within the building’s design and the users. As focal points of spatial hierarchy, they dynamically shape user experience, fostering creativity and community engagement. These hubs serve as vibrant centers of activity where the fusion of form and function enriches the architectural narrative. They spark human interaction and progress, elevating the built environment to new heights of spatial dynamism and social cohesion.

03: DIGITAL DESIGN

DIGITAL FABRICATION & MODELING CHICAGO, IL

In this section, I present a collection of projects undertaken during my digital design specialization. Each project reflects a fusion of various mediums, including CNC machining, laser cutting, Rhino modeling, and Grasshopper scripting.

These diverse tools and techniques have enabled me to explore innovative design solutions and push the boundaries of digital fabrication and modeling.
