Point/Line/Plane

This assignment was divided into three different parts. Part A was dedicated to engaging with our environment and finding examples of points, lines, and planes. Part B focused on abstraction and iteration of the examples we found. We then used these twodimensional iterations to create a three-dimensional abstraction and model of our iterations.

When doing this assignment, I focused on representing the concept of open versus closed. For my final model, I represented this through having one main form break free of its container and having smaller objects intersecting both that object and its container.

Site/Path/Threshold

This assignment was divided into two parts. The first exercise focused on the issues of site and how it can be a force in the unfolding of architecture. We focused on the process of excavation and construction as a means of creating architectural spaces, thresholds, and paths. Any material we excavated had to be used as part of the design of the site, and the final project had to include a primary and secondary entrance to the site, a large gathering space, at least two smaller spaces, and transitional spaces.

The second part of the assignment introduced the conventions of orthographic drawings. We were required to complete two floor plans and four sections of the spaces we made in the first part of the assignment. Both assignments were completed at 1/8”=1 foot scale.

When completing this assignment, I focused on excavating in a way that created small cave-like spaces as well as allowing a layered roof to be open for the public to walk on and view into the large gathering space. This created many opportunities for outdoor and indoor spaces with varying levels of light and size.

Occupiable Walls

This assignment explored the architectural possibilities of a given spatial condition. Our site had two parallel walls that we could build a studio for two scholars between. We were given a kit of parts and had to provide entry and clear circulation, privacy space for working, views and light, and a shared outdoor space. We also were required to design a garden and plaza for the space surrounding the walls.

For this assignment, I focused on creating many opportunities for accidental encounters for the scholars to encourage collaboration and discourage seclusion. To do this, I had the private study space for one scholar and their personal space opposite of one another. This created an opportunity for the other scholar to see when one scholar was going to another room. I indicated this through the use of different types of windows for each scholar to symbolize this mirroring of spaces.

Living Lighthouse

For our final project, we designed a microhousing tower for undergraduate students at Georgia Tech. We were required to include 30 units of housing with a bathroom, kitchenette, and storage space. We also had to include an elevator, scissor stairs, a lobby, study and recreation spaces, two classroom spaces, and a climbing wall. To begin designing the core, we turned our Occupiable Walls Project 90 degrees and abstracted different elements of it.

For this assignment, I focused on the upward twisting that I noticed in my w Walls project and the push and pull that came from how the scholar study spaces broke out of the rectangular base form.

These three assignments consisted of creating a wooden dowel model based off of a grid we had abstracted from architectural drawings, creating a space out of one sheet of Bristol paper using only ten cuts, and making charcoal drawings of these models in direct and indirect light.

Color

For this assignment, we took our wooden dowel and continuous planes models and explored representing them different color schemes. I used an analogous color palette for my wooden dowel project and a split-complementary color palette for my continuous planes project.

(De)Composition and Dialogue

For this assignment, we were required to choose an architectural precedent and recombine it to create two new compositions. Then, we combined pieces from the precedent with a historical structure to create a new composition.

I chose the SIS building as my precedent, and i recombined it in one way to preserve the symmetry but counteract the density of the building and in another way to break the symmetry and preserve the density of the structure. For my final composition, I combined it with the Pantheon.
