SOFIA MONTI

ARCHITECTURE STUDENT 01-01-1999

I’m 23 years old. I am a master’s degree student in architecture, pursuing my fifth-year studies at Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Because of the cultural historicity of Rome, I have, since childhood, always been fascinated by architecture as a professional discipline. We study conceptual design, house design, urban design, landscape design.

The collaborative projects have been carried out by the same team work over years. Developing coordination skills of a team is one of the main goals of the architecture course in Rome, for this reason the choice was to create a working team that works well. We decided to proceed together over the years, facing every obstacle together and trying to improve each other’s skills.

Urban Architecture 6 buildings East side gallery Berlin, Germany

Software: Autocad Rhinoceros V Ray Photoshop

The represented project is located in Berlin near the East Side Gallery Although the place is widely known as a tourist attraction in Berlin, citizens still remember it with sorrow as for years it hosted the wall that divided East Berlin from West Berlin. The choice was to transform the soil to transform its memory ; as said in the movie “Between the folds”, “When you fold a piece of paper you are essentially changing the memory of that piece”. The concept of the project was the art of origami , which according to precise geometric patterns is able to create objects, shapes and animals from the folds of a sheet of paper. The project includes a complex of buildings with different

functions, a music pavilion, a disco, a city pavilion, a sports pavilion, a spa (wellness center) and a (artificial) bathing pavilion. In the masterplan, the origami composes a series of open green spaces that define a system of squares at different heights on which regular and stereometric buildings are established by contrast. The origami that envelops and surrounds the buildings enters the interior twisting the floor through systems of ramps and stairs that define multiple heights and raumplan. As buildings are established regularly in the origami, within the building there are regular blocks containing different functions that connect through fluid spaces.

6

MUSIC PAVILLION

The music pavilion, which overlooks the Spree river in Berlin, includes a fluid interior space on which functional blocks are established. On the ground floor the necessary functions for information are located on shows, service spaces and a cafeteria. On the upper floors a system of multiple heights welcomes the origami defined by a system of stairs and ramps defining fluid and continuous space. The pavilion houses a concert hall that develops on two levels to accommodate concerts. The window system has been designed with a curtain wall system in order

to create large holes in the most suggestive spaces from a panoramic point of view. This system is designed so that the light floods the continuous space of the double heights creating a game of encounters between direct and diffused light. The materials used are exposed concrete and wood , both inside and outside. While on the outside the prospectus does not make reread the system of origami and obscures it with wooden brise soleil, inside it is the wood, which through a system of parapets for ramps and stairs, highlights its path.

7

CITY PAVILLION

The city pavilion has as its central internal block a conference room that ac commodates 150 people, around which the origami system develops creating floors that overlook the entrance hall at full height. It consists of four levels articulated so that the con ference room develops on two levels, thus having the ground floor for the access of the building with the main service functions and the top floor with an open space restaurant and river views.

The plans of this building reflect the general system of all the plans of the different pavilions, which are joined by uniformity of stile and architectural language both externally and internally.

PARKS REDEVELOPMENT

Castiglione del Lago is an Italian city located in Perugia. It is a village that dates back to the Etruscan period and was reclaimed after the Roman era and in the Middle Ages became a fortified village . Today the old town still shows the ancient walls. Representing the history of the place the historic center must be preserved and enhanced through a redevelopment of the surrounding areas. To begin with, all preliminary analyses have been made of the history of the place, the structure of the urban fabric and the current state of degradation of the

surrounding areas. Following the construction of the medieval village, the expansion spread like wildfire. The structure of the population provides largely elderly and families . The place is a great tourist attraction also thanks to the connections with the neighboring cities. Paying attention to the context the choice was to enhance the area of the lake in order to preserve the natural beauty of the place. Therefore, the project consists in the redevelopment of the neighbouring green areas in order to enhance the historic center by improving life quality .

The project previews a requalification of all the systems that encircles the historical center. A strong point of the place are the agricultural areas that if they are exploited well allow an increase in tourism. Therefore, the choice was to create a path that allows the tourists to discover the beauty of agricultural areas with facilities for direct sale of products.

13

PARKS REDEVELOPMENT

The project provides for the redevelopment of green areas through the creation of new urban parks suitable for all ages , both for the elderly and families of the place for both young people who come for tourism.

The park system provides circular arcaded squares for public use for events and outdoor exhibitions, to increase the tourism of the place. There is also an increase in cycle paths (linked to the existing system) and paved footpaths. Place of great tourist attraction is the ring route that also develops on the lake for a “suspended” route The system is characterized by a mosaic flooring consisting of paved plates, water and green areas.

The system of circles is repeated to create paved areas for recreation with fixed benches, or through the articulation of artificial lakes.

DYNAMIC BUILDING

Individual project Student housing Rome, Italy

15

DYNAMIC BUILDING

Student housing is a life experience that allows students to bond together. The experience is that of living in communities that have the same interests and that can use common spaces to socialize and increase their level of personal culture. The project is located north of Rome in the Flaminio district, near the Faculty of Architecture of Rome. The project involves the construction of a public contemporary square with spaces for temporary and fixed art exhibitions, with an open-air theater for shows and theatrical performances. The idea

of the project was that two regular buildings , in which students’ residences are housed, are linked by common social spaces The system therefore provides two independent structures that connect via “floating” walkways , stimulating the interest of the inhabitant of the building. Particular attention has been paid to the context , as the building has a cliff in the background, hence the choice of two buildings that make you feel the massiveness of the architecture, but by opening they show the beauty of the surrounding nature.

The project for the reuse and enhancement of the Istituto storico e di cultura of Arma del Genio acts on the existing building in a targeted way, in order to increase the accessibility and enjoyment of the architecture and its contents.

The project operations concern the following aspects:

1) opening the closed perimeter to ensure greater permeability between the building and the city;

2) typological reorganization by covering the main courtyard of the artifact, so that it can function as a real atrium. Designed as an ephemeral

architecture, the tent-structure becomes the place of scenographic events that, through multimedia, builds changing scenarios and high communicative value;

3) new articulation of the interior spaces , in order to undermine the logic of the linear path and to produce a greater quality and variation of the interior spaces;

4) Articulation of the roofs through the introduction of pergolas and sculptures, so as to transform the solar slabs into pleasant terraces for the use of the museum and the city.
