What About the Community in Detached Homes? Year: 2022 Type: Community
Your circle of community starts in the home, with the most private rooms that only your family members would enter being int the center. From there the circles expand - the rooms that your invited guests visit - the garden where you say hi to your closest neighbours - the streets you walk to get to the subway - and so on. The longer the distance from your home, the more people in the circle. This means that the further away you do your grocery shopping from your home the less likely it is that you bump in to your neighbours. When a natural meeting point is removed from your neighbourhood one of these circles is broken or disappears. This is what has happened to many of the detached housing areas, or garden cities, around Stockholm. I want to repair that broken circle of community by bringing back natural meeting points to the neighbourhood, but in a way that would function today.

Storgatan 23 Year: 2021 Type: Housing
What happens when you set a façade first and let the plans and sections grow form there? What you see is a study of vertical and horizontal expressions where the meeting points of the prefabricated concrete elements are pushed out in the façade instead of being hidden in the shadows of the circular shapes. The inner walls and doors have been carefully placed to not interfere with the façade and to let maximum amount of daylight into the rooms. The very first activity that came to my mind in the design process was a meeting place for the sport federations in the area, for both the youth and adult scene. I also see this as a conference space for the local businesses, a party room or a place to host yoga classes.

The Blue Oyster Year: 2021 Type: Oyster Bar
This oyster bar plays with the contrasts of narrow and spacious. The size constraints of the old church basement left little room for a generous bar in the heart of central Stockholm. Instead of focusing on making the big spaces bigger, the narrow corridors between the rooms became smaller. I imagined walking through a small hallway full of coats and jackets to then be able to breathe once you’ve emerged. That initial sketch stayed with me through the entire process where I made several fabric tests to get the right texture and sound. To enhance the feeling of being at sea, all walls are covered with dark blue raincoat fabric and the floors in the classic circled rubber floor used in fishing boats.

Affleck House Year: 2021 Type: Renovation
The Affleck House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and served as a single-family home for the Affleck’s until they passed. The house was then donated to Lawrence Technological University and has not served as a home since. My idea is to bring this historical piece of architecture to life again and let it be used rather than simply looked at. It will now serve as a small, rather exclusive, Bed and Breakfast for whatever needs the university may have. The only way down to the basement in Wright’s original plan was through the kitchen down to “the maid’s room”. My proposal is to change the direction of the stairs by starting the journey down in the hallway instead of the kitchen. By doing so, I make minimal impact on the original plans but make new use of the whole bottom floor which now adds an extra social area and more bedrooms.
