As a student, I developed an interest in architecture interventions focused on reuse, renovation and adaptation, and investigating how these play an integral role in fulfilling the evolving needs of the cities' communities. I find this plasticity very interesting and ended up doing my master's thesis on industrial heritage and its adaptive reuse(s).

As an architect, I have been having the opportunity to work on different scales and works. At Studio Arte I had the chance to further develop conceptual designs, while at Estudio ODS I developed an interest in execution and detailing. It was were I deepened my knowledge and was able to develop some carpentry designs, something that I was already intersted in. I had the opportunity to design some pieces for Casa nos Agostos and Apartment Daisy, such as wardrobes, nightstands, bookcases and a sewing closet.

To broaden my understanding of construction, I joined Tribato, a company that specializes in architecture quantity surveying. I hope to continue enlarging my knowledge on the areas of execution and detailing, making use of the skills that my professional path has given me, while being open to the full range that is working in architecture.

01 Casa nos Agostos

Casa nos Agostos concerns the rehabilitation and adaptation of an existing house located in Sítio dos Agostos, Santa Bárbara de Nexe, Faro. The house sits on a plot of 3.5 hectares, accessible by pathways flanked by stone walls. The construction, dated from the early 20th century, was on an advanced state of ruin. The house construction highlighted three main materials: the walls of stone structure, the wooden roof structure, and the tiled roof. Located in a rural area, the house is comprised of agricultural structures, an oven, a patio, and surrounded by a terrace.

The main goal was to preserve the vernacular identity of the architecture, by keeping as much of the original design and main characteristics.

The rehabilitation process involves the conservation of the exterior walls and most of the original plan, and its adaptation into a family house.

Conscious choices were made when it came to the materials. Most of the existing openings’ stoneworks were viable for reuse and the intervention foresees materials that can be found locally, such as pavement in Santa Catarina tiles, Canudo roof tiles, Escarpão stone for wet areas, thresholds and steps on the levels’ transitions. The roof needed a new wooden structure, and the same material would be used as well for doors, windows, wardrobes and cabinets and niches.

Inserted on a slope, the house is split into four different levels, from private to public.

The front porch was maintained as the entrance of the house, designing a welcoming outdoor space. At this level, we have access to the main rooms.

The kitchen is on a lower floorplan, provinding a higher ceiling height, extending the house outwards, towards the outdoor terrace and pool.

Because of the natural terrain morphology, the back of the house sits on a higher level. The north patio was kept with the intention of creating a private outdoor space, connecting to the private areas.

On the premisse that the family lived more together on the kitchen and dining areas, the living room wouldn't need to be very big, so a cozy nook was designed responding to the family's needs.

02 Apartment Daisy

Apartment Daisy refers to an apartment renovation in the city of Faro. Daisy's family wanted to turn their 3 bedroom apartment into a 2 bedroom apartment creating an area for mom's sewing works.

The idea was to seperate the private from the social areas, and to create enough storage for all the fabrics envolved on the sewing works. With little transformation, the third room was dissolved, allowing larger room for the kitchen and dining areas. The surgical demolition of walls provided an open space between the kitchen and the living room.

The space was also organized with carpentry pieces. These closets solved the storage needs and also confined some spaces.

02 Apartment Daisy

The entrance hall is confined by a closet, creating a physical separation from the living room, but not a visual one.

The open space allows communication between the front and the back balconies; given that the apartment is on the last floor of the building, it shall have nice natural lighting. The original oak floor was kept; the new closets are to be painted white on their outer surfaces.

In the living room, on an existing nook, was created the sewing closet. It was important to have an ample table to work on, along with organizing shelves for all the different materials. The folding doors allow the closing of this space, putting the work area out of sight.

The rooms and main bathroom were kept; a new bathroom was designed on this volume.

02 Apartment Daisy

I had the liberty do design some of the furniture for this project. The most complex piece was the Sewing Closet; we wanted to clad the whole interior with wood, creating a contrast with its surroundings. It was important to keep the work area out of sight, so a folding door mechanism was included for this solution.

The entrance closet was designed in mind to solve different needs: footwear storage; a hanger; a hidden place for the AC; conceal a structural pilar; provide access to (and hide) electrical cabinets; and a niche for personal belongings (or for Daisy).

For the main bedroom were designed wardrobes along with a night stand piece. The intersection of the two volumes creates a niche great to store some books or to embed a light fixture.

03 Concrete Hideaway

Concrete Hideaway is a concept idea for a house for a single family in the middle of nature. We wanted to create a retreat where one could isolate themselves from the noisy city rush.

In an unspecified place, we designed a house with themes and materials that we wanted to explore.

The house resembles a stone, a static monolith that stands in the midst of the ever-growing forrest. The plan can be divided in 4 different areas, each with it's own function: entrance; social; private; study.

The social areas of the house are to the south, opening to the outdoors, to the swimming pool. On the left wing of the house, each room has its own access to the outside, allowing easy access to nature.

03 Concrete Hideaway

The study detaches itself from the house, creating an exterior patio. This secluded patio provides a breating room, isolating the office area from the living area.

Besides concrete, the other main material is wood. It is present in window frames, doors, closets, kitchen cabinets and bookcases. The window openings are very generous because one of the intentions was to bring the nature inside. They are, however, more contained on the bedrooms and corridor, creating a rythm, allowing nonetheless the contact with the exterior.

04 Tribato

At Tribato I have analysed more than 30 projects from 23 different clients. For the work of measuring and budgeting, an analysis of the drawn pieces is carried out where a revision of the drawings is made.

Throughout the work, we establish contacts with different brands and construction materials companies, in order to request products' informations, technical data sheets, or quotations for the preparation of the bill of quantities.

The analysis of dozens of projects from different architectural offices contributed to the development of my knowledge of execution plans and detailing, as well as of different constructive solutions.

The projects vary in scale and architectural programmes, going from a range of new construction to refurbishments. Following is a list of some projects I've participated in, along with the construction area and estimated cost of the works.
