A NEW LANGUAGE

Evidently, it was easier to talk in Oldspeak, but for the government, a way of keeping people under control, was to force them to use Newspeak; each word that could be meant rebellion, was eliminated from the vocabulary as if it had never existed. Lastly, it is explicitly said that: “‘Don’t you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end, we shall make thoughtcrime literally impossible because there will be no words in which to express it. Every concept that can ever be needed, will be expressed by exactly one word, with its meaning rigidly defined and all its subsidiary meanings rubbed out and forgotten.” (Part 1, chapter 5, page 67, third paragraph, first line). This explained the government’s purpose and the interpretation of it; it was basically to limit their thoughts and their capacities, remaining under the shadow of ignorance.

THE HOBBY OF HATING

Hate moments were the oddest moments; though, in the book, it seems to be really regular. In part 1, chapter

Furthermore, they used this technique to glorify Big Brother within The Party, and provoked hate and extreme rage to opposites; this manipulated them in order to keep supporting The Party. In part 1, chapter 1, page 18, last paragraph, last line, it describes the horrible situation; they were not demanded to participate, but they felt the necessity of being part of it because they were manipulated. They felt a desire to kill, to torture, to smash faces, and to be violent. It is confirmed that even Winston, in those moments, changed his secret loathing of Big Brother into adoration and as a figure of a fearless protector, invincible (part 1, Chapter 1, page 19, first paragraph, line 15).

SUPER SPIES GAME

In this society, even the children were raised to spy on their parents and have a violent mentality. In part 1, chapter 2, last paragraph, first line, it was explained that Mrs. Parsons children were dressed in blue shorts, gray shirts, and red neckerchiefs, indicating they were part of the Spies. Winston was attacked by them with a savage voice, a handsome boy of nine years old and his small sister, who was two years old. They were using a toy automatic pistol. It is described that Winston actually felt frightened, and moreover because it had happened after he wrote “Down Big Brother” in his diary. The kids said: ‘You’re a traitor!’ yelled the boy. ‘You’re a thought-criminal! You’re a Eurasian spy! I’ll shoot you, I’ll vaporize you, I’ll send you to the salt mines!’ Suddenly they were both leaping around him, shouting ‘Traitor!’ and ‘Thought-criminal!’. Thus, the boy had a ferocity in his eyes, meaning a desire to kill or torture, that actually felt real. Children, instead of playing with toys, were trained to spy on their parents in case they showed behaviors against The Party. They showed irrational rage, while normal kids represented naivety and happiness; kids were psychologically manipulated to think that they had to act in that way, to serve loyalty to The Party and that even their parents could be the enemy. Because of their innate naivety, they were brainwashed to have this demeanor. This also forced their parents to act impeccably. It was a hard pressure for both, parents and kids.

In the book 1984, there is clearly interpreted the intention of George Orwell, of showing how chaotic and frightening would be a society if totalitarianism starts ruling it. Through psychological manipulation, people live under the dream that Big Brother is their savior and protector; what they do not know is that they have been all the time under a charm based on lies. Also, it exposed how easy it is to deceive people and the naive, besides the vulnerable, side of people. Psychological manipulation is the most effective way of brainwashing someone; in the novel, people were manipulated in their own homes, they were watched by their children, they had their vocabulary controlled, and they were forced to hate violently. They were convinced that all those actions were for the Party’s and society’s benefit, making them think that they were victorious. It was only a way of maintaining people under their control and keeping the power; avoiding revolution. Even though Winston’s final fate was tragic, it shows all the instances that a government could have to pursue its power. Finally, as Thomas Paine said once: “The duty of a true Patriot is to protect his country from its government.”

Lies, mystery, and control over things is a big part of life or society. There will always be one person, group, company, or community that is willing to do anything so worldwide secrets, their secrets, or information does not go out into the world…

Throughout history information and details have had an important role because this is what people believe, or what they eventually will start to follow since it is what the “reliable information” says. The misleading in history or general information helps leaders and powerful groups control other people's lives… Mold it how they want them to be and what they would like them to believe.

But when this information is finally disclosed, some people start to get curious and know more, rebelling against these groups who made them think things that weren't true… This is something viewed in various parts of the novel 1984 by Jorge Orwell. Where the society’s past and knowledge is misleading or not allowed…

The importance of the past The issue of control of information is a complex one, it has affected how history continues in life through many years... It has led to problems and confusion in a society where some believe the lies are told and some want the truth.

That is why having a record of past events is so significant in society. ISACHENKO, Nadezhda N, (2018) says this about the importance

A clear example of control of information is war and the story behind this, what happen and what did not. “In recent years control of the media has greatly reinforced the culture of war of the state and the military-industrial complex. Never before in history has there been such a concentration of communication power in the hands of a few multinational corporations, Most media in the United States, for example, are now in the hands of five multinational corporations.”. So finally with this information and examples, it can be concluded that not only in 1984 the control of information and history exist but in our society nowadays. Where the people who mostly control or keep secret this information is powerful people, the government, corporations even the own leaders of all this society. All these people or groups do this to be able to manipulate others to mold them to how they want them and that way makes them believe whatever they say...

This control can lead to events in a society where many are lied to and lose the privilege for others' benefit. the truth may have been uncovered years later, but the people who believed and were affected by these changes did not get to know the exact truth. This can be easily seen in the novel 1984 by George Orwell.

psychologically their society members in a way that they could no longer be considered individuals with their own physical and emotional traits.

They are so transformed by the full power of the government that they will no longer be differentiated from one another, what they all have in common is that they follow the same leader group and are devoted to it.

The author, George Orwell, shows a society in which the government has full control of human life, and any sign of disloyalty could cause trouble. Winston Smith challenges the party’s power, starting by writing a journal. To discover the oppression from the party and surpasses even his most psychotic expectations. The Party employs a variety of ways to control its citizens, as

evolves,

like

psychological

manipulation, control of information and history, loyalty, and physical control.

Information and history control against citizens For its own purposes, the party

manipulates

the information and history, they rewrite all newspapers and histories. Individuals are not permitted to maintain records of their history, such as photographs or documents, which takes away private memories from them.

Because of this, citizens start to doubt their memories, so they believe in the party and what they tell them. On page 44, “And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed control, if all records told the same tale-then the lie passed into history and became truth.

'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.' And yet the past, thought of its nature alterable, had never been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory.

'Reality control', they called it: in Newspeak, 'doublethink´. The Party can affect history by dominating the present. And by taking control over the past, the Party is able to explain all of its current acts but takes away any hints of an individual’s history.

BIG BROTHER IS ALWAYS WATCHING The Party overwhelms its believers with psychological stimuli that are designed to limit the mind's ability to think independently and differently from one another.

On page 79 “It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescope. The smallest thing could give you away.” Every citizen's house has a big telescreen that shows a constant stream of propaganda designed to portray the Party's failings and flaws as victorious victories. The telescreens also keep an eye on citizens' activities; they are constantly reminded that the authorities are watching them, particularly by the numerous signs that read, “BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.” The Junior Spies is a group that hires minors as spies for their own parents, watches them, and reports any strange situations to the party. “The Party, which considers sex as just a procreative responsibility aimed at creating new Party members, forces people to conceal their sexual impulses.”

On page 83, “The aim of the Party was not merely to prevent men and women from forming loyalties which it might not be able to control. Its real, undeclared purpose was to remove all pleasure from the sexual act. Not love so much as eroticism was the enemy, inside marriage as well as outside it. All marriages between Party members had to be approved by a committee appointed for the purpose, and though the principle was never clearly stated-permission was always refused if the couple concerned gave the impression of being physically attracted to one another. Couples are no longer allowed to be physically attracted to each other, which means they are only seen as generators. Since the citizens are not allowed to have thoughts of their own, there is nothing that could be shared with their partners. Nothing to trust them because big brother was always watching and this makes them once more lose the individualism left in their systems since they are not allowed to be free, not even with their partner.

Full devotion The Party's goal in 1984 is to ensure that the only sort of devotion that exists is loyalty to the Party. On page 137 “There will be no loyalty, except loyalty towards the Party. There will be no love, except the love of Big Brother. There will be no laughter, except the laugh of triumph over a defeated enemy.” Neighbors and employees warn each other off, and Mr. Parson's own child informs the Thought Police. On page 31 “And with good reason, for hardly a week passed in which “The Times” did not carry a paragraph describing how some eavesdropping little sneak-'child hero' was the phrase generally used-had overheard some compromising remark and denounced its parents to the Thought Police.” This statement shows how children have been dehumanized by the party, kids betray their own parents by reporting them to the thought police and see nothing wrong with this, showing how totalitarianism takes away human characteristics from people, even kids.

NO TWITCHES ALLOWED The Party has complete control over its subjects' bodies in addition to their thoughts. The Party is always attentive to signs of disloyalty, Winston notices that “even a minor facial twitch might result in an arrest.” On page 22, the author states “To dissemble your feelings, to control your face, to do what everyone else was doing, was an instinctive reaction. But there was a space of a couple of seconds during which the expression of his eyes might conceivably have betrayed him.” A person's neurological system becomes his deadliest adversary. “Members of the Party are required to participate in morning exercises known as the Physical Jerks, and then work long, exhausting days in government offices.” Anyone who succeeds to resist the Party is subjected to a system of harsh torture as a kind of punishment. Winston notices that the best punishment is physical, and it cannot be surpassed by emotional attachment. The Party has the ability to modify reality by hurting its victims physically and instilling fear in their minds.

These tools are used by the party to control its followers and maintain the order in their society, but also lose every hint of individualism in human beings, taking away what makes humans different from one another. The human characteristics like empathy, love towards parents, freedom of expression, and many others are taken away from citizens and the worst thing is that they do not notice the loss of something they never had, meaning they will never get to know what a loving family, own thoughts, or a loving relationship, feel like, they never got a taste of it due to totalitarianism.

Love is what connects us to other people and makes us feel empathy and connection.

Forbidden love in real life can be a passionate, imaginative type of love, but in the book is actually a reality and that is one of the things that make this book so sad and concerning to the audience, not showing a basic human emotion such as love in the book, or showing it as really prohibited, make fascinating how the characters develop and feel this in their own unique ways.

Power is a weapon of great use, but it is also a dark weapon, in most cases power is given and in others is taken. If power is taken that sure means that the one subjected to it is going to suffer. For a person who achieves power this way, total control would be their finish line and even with that, they would not be satisfied. This is what the members of the party were doing, they had all the power and wanted to control everything as well, both psychological and physical were their ways to get what they wanted.

In the book “1984'' by George Orwell, the reader is shown some type of dystopian society where one of its most persistent themes is the abuse of physical control. Physical control is essential to Winston and everyone else in the story. Telescreens are strategically placed across the city to ensure that no one commits a thoughtcrime. If someone finds out you do not love Big Big Brother, you will be apprehended and taken to the Ministry of Love, where you will be forced to love Big Brother for the rest of your life.

Basically, it was loving Big Brother or loving no one, and although that sounds more like physiological control, the things they do to you once they find out you are disloyal to the party shows how they use pain and suffering to make you comply with what they want you to believe. Big Brother is believed to be excellent, and whatever he does is deemed to be good. Big Brother and the Party have complete control over everything a person does, including how they get home, which is creepy enough. The Party has complete control over a person's movements, as well as their memories and emotions.

The thirties to forties!’Winston sprang to attention in front of the telescreen, upon which the image of a youngish woman, scrawny but muscular, dressed in tunic and gym-shoes, had already appeared. ‘Arms bending and stretching!’ she rapped out. ‘Take your time by me. ONE, two, three, four! ONE, two, three, four! Come on, comrades put a bit of life into it! ONE, two, three, four! ONE two, three, four!...’ As he mechanically shot his arms back and forth, wearing on his face the look of grim enjoyment which was considered proper during the Physical Jerks, he was struggling.’ ” In chapter 2, page 40, the last paragraph they first named what the famous physical jerks were about. Practically the Physical Jerks are a sort of rudimentary exercise that is imposed on Outer Party members on a regular basis. It is comparable to the activities that kids in physical education classes are normally obliged to do. Every morning, the instructor is shown through the screen and leads the residents through various sets of warmups and basic exercises. Because the telescreens can broadcast and watch, each citizen's efforts can be tracked. The Party sells mandatory exercise to residents by claiming that the government wants to eliminate obesity, but the Physical Jerks are just another way for the Party to display its ultimate domination over the people. On this occasion, though, the power is over people's physical states. The goal of the party is to exhaust everyone, Oceanian inhabitants are subjected to mass morning workouts followed by long, demanding hours at government workplaces. Broad propaganda is a type of mental control, while Physical Jerks are a clear demonstration of physical control.

BRAINWASH COMES AFTER DISLOYALTY “Tell me, Winston—and remember, no lies: you know that I am always able to detect a lie—tell me, what are your true feelings towards Big Brother?’‘I hate him.’ ‘You hate him. Good. Then the time has come for you to take the last step. You must love Big Brother. It is not enough to obey him: you must love him.”

Taking the example shown in chapter 4, page 355, the last paragraph where Winston is captured by the thought police, it is one of the most evident evidence of Big Brother's physical control. The Party had such control over the citizens that those who were found defying the Party were punished and "reeducated" through relentless and harsh torture. Just as it happened with Winston. After a certain time, Winston is relocated to a more peaceful room, and the anguish ceases.

He gains weight and obtains the ability to write on a little slate. He sees he was foolish to battle the Party alone and attempts to persuade himself of Party beliefs. On his slate, he writes "FREEDOM IS SLAVERY," "TWO AND TWO MAKE FIVE," and "GOD IS POWER." Though he is certain that he continued hating the Party and he liked it. He tries to keep his rage disguised so that even he doesn't see it. As a result, if he is murdered by the Party, he will die hating Big Brother as a minor victory to himself.

When Winston arrives with the guards, he informs O'Brien that he actually hates Big Brother. O'Brien says to Winston that he must do more than simply follow Big Brother; Winston must love him and that is when O’Brien decides to take him to room 101, where he knew suffering would help him understand the importance of being loyal to Big Brother.

MOLDING YOUR R EALITY Two plus two equals five; one of the party’s slogans shows how the party is able to dominate reality by molding the brains of its victims with physical suffering, at a point to even convince them that this is a logical-mathematical exercise. Although this is a very solid example of how the party manipulated the lives of the citizens of Oceania, a stronger argument for this claim is the fact that they erased the past in order to maintain the power they so much desire. In chapter 2, pages 313-314, last and first paragraph after Winston’s been apprehended, there is a part O’Brien explicitly tells him “Until this moment you had never considered what is meant by existence. I will put it more precisely. Does the past exist concretely, in space? Is there somewhere or other a place, a world of solid objects, where the past is still Happening?’ ‘No.’ ‘Then where does the past exist, if at all?’ ‘In records. It is written down.’ ‘In records. And——?’‘In the mind.

In human memories.’‘In memory. Very well, then. We, the Party, control all records, and we control all memories. Then we control the past, do we not?” People study history to avoid repeating the same mistakes they made in the past. Individuals look back at history for examples of what worked and what didn't, as well as what was good and what was bad. In 1984, the Party admitted that its citizens were influenced by history. Oceanians can relate to, reflect on, and compare history to the present. History, because of this, according to the Party, stands in the way of absolute dominance over their people.

To avoid rebellion, the Party decided that it needed to eradicate every glimpse of history in order to make the present seem more appealing than the past.

If they take away people's ability to see anything but perfection from the party, they would be taking away people's willingness to stand up against the Party.

Citizens are only left with their memories because there is no evidence of the Party's true colors.

FINALLY GIVIN G UP

“More dimly he thought of Julia. Somewhere or other she was suffering perhaps far worse than he. She might be screaming with pain at this moment. He thought: ‘If I could save Julia by doubling my own pain, would I do it? Yes, I would.’ But that was merely an intellectual decision, taken because he knew that he ought to take it. He did not feel it. In this place, you could not feel anything, except pain and foreknowledge of pain. Besides, was it possible, when you were actually suffering it, to wish for any reason that your own pain should increase? Never, for any reason on earth, could you wish for an increase of pain. Of pain, you could wish only one thing: that it should stop. Nothing in the world was so bad as physical pain. In the face of pain, there are no heroes, no heroes.” In chapter 2, pages 301 and 302 we finally evidence how Winston himself realizes that there is no force more powerful than physical pain.

It is here where he starts to doubt if he is really capable of enduring huge amounts of physical suffering just to protect a woman who had betrayed him first. Winston, handcuffed to a chair in Room 101 by O'Brien's order, is where he acknowledges this. O'Brien informs Winston that "the deadliest thing in the universe" is housed in Room 101. Winston is reminded of his scariest nightmare, being in a dim environment with horrifying things on the other corner, and he is informed that rats should be on the other side of the wall. O'Brien places a cage full of big, squirming rats beside Winston. He actually worries that if he pushes a lever, the door will open, allowing the rats to pounce on Winston's skin and bite it. Winston sobs in front of the writhing, starving rats. He exclaims that he prefers O'Brien to harass Julia rather than him. O'Brien removes the cage, happy with his betrayal.

In George Orwell's novel 1984, the Party seeks to rule all of Oceania's citizens. They have found out how to intrude on their followers' individuality by monitoring them via telescreens, manipulating them into mindless allegiance, and even claiming command over their bodies and souls. Because the Party has limited language, dissident sentiments cannot be communicated, and they are attempting to control the past.

The Party seeks to monitor the past since they consider that by dominating history and memory, the Party can govern its citizens and gain power.. Throughout the novel, there are many themes but certainly, Physical control is very much highlighted.

The Party is always on the lookout for signs of treachery, to the extent where, as Winston points out, even a minor facial spasm might result in incarceration. A man's neurological system becomes his deadliest enemy.

Throughout history technology has been influential in the world, leading to new inventions, medicine, and in general a lot of important fortes in life. As time goes on individuals have uncovered new specialties and developed new inventions, each one better than the other, this leading society to where it is at the moment. But as better things come there are also immoral people taking benefit of these new innovations and technology to do things as they please, not always good things... With these advancements, they keep discovering new ways to maintain things easier for humans and making everything “better for them”. Just like in the novel 1984, they used technology to observe everyone's movements and make sure they aren't doing something bad or “illegal” leaving them with no privacy.

The Telescreens

Technology is the way they transmit and work in this society. “ The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely.” chapter 1 page 4. Where telescreens are introduced.. By this we can know that they used technology in so many ways that it started to be scary for some people. The Telescreens are a tv looking style device that was used in “those times” to control and watch people's movements closely. They started doing this because they wanted to find a way to maintain things “controlled” in some way, but these only made people a bit curious because it was overall a sick way to do it.

Secondly, it is no secret that nowadays there are multiple devices that are able to hear conversations or people talking from far away... There are multiple theories that phone or personal devices are listening to personal

conversations

personal conversation.. Researchers found hundreds of apps that do not just allow you to do fun things, they collect your data and sell it.

Some recent articles have suggested that social networks are listening to people’s conversations in order to show them relevant ads. This is not true. We show ads based on people’s interests and other profile information – not what you are talking out loud about.

In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, there are multiple demonstrations of personal devices or microphones around the city where the citizens are being heard.. "There were no telescreens, of course, but there was always the danger of concealed microphones by which your voice might be picked up and recognized;" part 2, chapter 2 page 143 of the book 1984 can make you infer how the microphones were hidden and there was not a way of you knowing it.

As technology advances these devices too and can be used for many negative things in the development of history and life. Again as shown in 1984 they use these microphones to make sure no one talks bad about the party, planning something bad about it, or in general, doing “illegal” things. This was a great idea for them.

Even Though it is invasive and inappropriate, it was in order to make people know the “power” they have.

Manipulation because of modernization.

In 1984 modernization was technology and they used this for controlling means and manipulating the citizens in the place.. It is known they use telescreens and microphones to spy and manipulate their citizens. But how? They monitor 24/7 what people say and do, they use propaganda to let them know that things are prohibited or based on what they hear.

Modernization in 1984 takes the form of technology, used for controlling means. By placing telescreens and clandestine microphones all across Oceania,

monitors

its

constituents 24/7. At work, in the comforts of their own home, even in the countryside or giant plazas and marketplaces,

Oceanians

cannot

expect privacy. The Party's use of advanced surveillance technology is only one of the methods it employs to ensure and ascertain control.

How technology causes war Additionally, even though the technology is good and has brought positive effects, it has also brought negative. One of the many negative effects that this brought to society, was the feeling that you are being watched, leaving them with 0 privacy. They also thought that it was not enough for them to have the telescreens, so they decided that it would be a great idea to have microphones on them. Technology is so important in the novel and nowadays, that people have the tendency to use it to mislead information and hide the real truth behind things.

It can be concluded that the 1984 novel has a lot of interesting aspects that make the readers know more about it. Also, it is noticeable that technology is essential there. Even though the technique in which they used electronic devices was not in the right form, it was to “control” in some way the citizens in order to keep all their problems under control. This, leading them to no more options than be submissive at the power that the society had over them with this new technology.
