Lansing School District Food & Nutrition Services Mid-Year Review Through January 2015

We have embraced the spirit of Caring, Collaboration, & Excellence.

First, let’s revisit what we learned at our expectations meeting on May 29th 201490 Day Partner Expectations 1. During our first full week of school there will be an expectation of no complaints regarding our food or food services-  ACHIEVED- When concerns arise we are communicating and resolving accordingly.

2. Develop incentive plan to increase the number of Household Information Surveys-  ACHIEVED-with the help of Mr. McGraw, an automated call was sent to all homes with a personal message from Mr. Johnson.

3. Maintaining a safe work environment is important at Lansing Schools. To ensure safety we are providing in- depth safety & employee trainings Monthly-  ACHIEVED & Ongoing 4. Develop nutritious dinner program implemented within the first 90 days-  ACHIEVED 5. Increasing Student Nutrition & SodexoMAGIC brand awareness to our students, families & community-  ACHIEVED-Participation in parent meetings; ongoing new product samplings, with student feedback in cafeterias. School menu carbohydrate counts made available, monthly. With the help of Mr. McGraw, a link has been created on the District website to access the SodexoMAGIC web site. The site includes menus, employment opportunities & brand awareness 6. Complete a student survey that will be used as baseline-  ACHIEVED-Student & Parent Surveys are posted on the Food & Nutrition Services website & communication has been provided to building principals & social media sites

SodexoMAGIC Staff consists of: 2 Truck Drivers 6 High School Servers & Cashiers 6 Middle School Servers & Cashiers The Management Team continues to work on building relationships with Human Resources and Union Leaders for a smooth transition.

The objective of the Weekend Survival Kit (WSK)/Backpack Food Program is to provide & distribute nutritious, healthy foods to at-risk children of hunger for preparation & consumption at home. The food is discreetly distributed in an easily accessible and safe environment.

The Sodexo Foundation/END IT WITH ORANGE has awarded the Great Lansing Food Bank a $1,000 donation for the purchase of food for WSK. Lansing School District Staff is supporting the fight against hunger by collecting donations for the WSK program. To date the staff has collected an additional $1,315 to support the initiative.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Stephen J. Brady Stop Hunger Scholarships, a program of the Sodexo Foundation, recognize students who are driving awareness and mobilizing youth to be catalysts for innovative models and solutions to eliminate hunger in America. The scholarship recipients each receive $5,000 for their education as well as a matching grant in their name for the hunger-related charity of their choice. In addition, each national scholarship recipient is recognized at the annual Sodexo Foundation Dinner in Washington, DC. Sodexo, Inc. pays all transportation, meals, and lodging for the student and up to two immediate family members.

Collaboration Magic Day! Mr. Johnson’s visit to Lansing School District brought positive energy into the Community, Classrooms & Cafes. His energy & dedication was also evident with a personal message to all Lansing School District parents to encourage attendance & completing the Household Information Survey.

Staff Appreciation Events BBQ Picnic SodexoMAGIC donated a BBQ Lunch for all custodial, maintenance & food service employees in August 2014. SodexoMAGIC provided burgers, brats, hotdogs, fresh fruit, salads and a variety of ice cream. The event was appreciated by all that attended!

Holiday Luncheon SodexoMAGIC hosted lunch for all food service, custodial, and maintenance employees in Lansing School District. Staff who attended enjoyed prime rib, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, green bean casserole, dinner rolls, salad, variety of drinks and desserts. Donations were also collected for Weekend Survival Kits.

Holiday Staff Appreciation Set Up

Lift-Off Visit Lift-Off made a surprise visit in Lansing School District; Lift-Off highlighted the upcoming Future Chef Program as well as gave away prizes such as T-shirts, pens, and ball caps. Students were very surprised & excited in meeting Lift-Off.

Mentoring Lansing School District offers a culinary arts program for high school juniors & seniors with a strong interest in culinary.

SodexoMAGIC mentors students by critiquing student prepared dishes & working on their techniques & plate presentation. This helps prepare the students for the Annual ProStart Competition.

SodexoMAGIC shares personal experiences and points of view on the food service industry to expose students to various career path options in culinary arts.

Student Bobby Murray was chosen to utilize his culinary classroom skills to our High School Lunch program.

After spending the day at Sexton Bobby had this to say: “This was helpful as it lets me know that I have to get faster if I want to go into the foodservice business” – Bobby Murray

Future Chefs

SodexoMAGIC will be hosting the first annual Lansing School District Future Chefs event that invites all K-5th grade students to participate. Students may participate by entering their favorite healthy snack recipe. One finalist will be selected from each school and will compete in a live event with judges on March 25, 2015.

Building principals have been informed of the event and have made a decision on whether or not they would like their students to participate. Out of 23 eligible schools, 21 schools are participating in the Future Chefs event.

For participating schools, SodexoMAGIC sent home a letter to parents and a recipe card for students. Each school also received a recipe box to store submitted recipe cards.

SodexoMAGIC teamed up with Everett art teacher, Ms. Collins, in getting her students to use their creativity to design these boxes.

We have collected over 100 recipes from participating buildings!

Communicating with Parents, Students & Staff with the Updated Website The Lansing School District’s Food & Nutrition Services website is now a comprehensive solution to keeping students and parents updated on information about student well-being, easy access to menus and to contacting the department. Everything on the full nutrition site can also be accessed through the Districts App. Daily menu options, well-being tips and promotions are available, all at their fingertips!

Excellence

The Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits & vegetables currently to students at Willow, Kendon & North elementary schools during the school day.

The goal of the FFVP is to improve children’s overall diet & create healthier eating habits to impact their present and future health. The FFVP will help schools create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices, expanding the variety of fruits & vegetables children experience & increasing children’s fruit & vegetable consumption. We try to offer a diverse program of fruits and vegetables such as zucchini coins, honeydew chunks, grape tomatoes and watermelon chunks.

We understand that the FFVP is an optional competitive grant that schools apply for each year. We will provide important info to building principals to increase program awareness. Applications are due before April 30th 2015.

Supper Program

To provide a value added program to Lansing, this program is centered on stopping childhood hunger, eliminating child obesity, and helping students achieve through enrichment, nourishment and care. Eastern High School was able to implement the supper program due to the extended school day.

Eastern High School –Has served over 26,000 meals this school year!

Operating four new sites this month- Sexton, Gardner, Everett & North.

Catering Services

Flavours is the name of SodexoMAGIC catering program. Executive Chef Amey Campbell and the SodexoMAGIC team have put an emphasis on appearance, presentation and flavor. SodexoMAGIC has heard rave reviews about the catering program.

March 2015 For the PK-3, PreK-6 & 4-6 Buildings From apples to zucchini and everything in between- the A to Z is a daily innovative way to teach students about good nutrition. It focuses on offering a variety of fruits and vegetables that students might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.
