Dear Friends: Opening a Central Library is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for most directors and board presidents. We have been fortunate to have that experience, and to have the support of our city, our Library Foundation, generous donors, the team of professionals who brought the Central Library project to life and the staff who engage with library visitors daily. Public response has been overwhelmingly positive to the new library and the new direction for services that it embodies. The modern library is less of a static institution and more important for its relationship with the community. Our new Central Library was designed with this in mind, incorporating features that allow for community building and for people to connect with others in person or online. From the Chocolaterian café to the meeting and study rooms to the hands-on learning that happens in our Bubbler, Media Lab and children’s room spaces, Central Library provides the spaces, materials, technology and expertise to help visitors learn, grow and connect with others in meaningful ways. The library and the board made significant policy changes to support these connections, including permission to bring food and drink in our libraries, and offering rental spaces for public and private events. The design of our facilities allows large social gatherings, small-group meetings and quiet study, all at the same time. Our Central Library has also opened the doors to new partnerships and opportunities for the library. Many individuals visit the library for the first time to attend a meeting or event, and then return to the library for collections, for other events, or to use the space, services and wi-fi again and again. The new spaces inspire creativity, reflection and even love! One of several weddings we will host in 2015 came about through a chance meeting at the library’s Grand Opening Weekend. As we prepared to open Central Library, we were also in the planning stages for an expanded and remodeled Meadowridge Library on the city’s southwest side. At Meadowridge, enhanced facilities and flexible spaces will allow for a variety of programming and partnerships with neighborhood groups. Unique features such as a shared community room and kitchen will invite community engagement over meals, and offer the library and the neighborhood center special programming opportunities that combat hunger while promoting nutrition and health. In a time when information is increasingly available online, library spaces play an important role in connecting with that information and with others. It is an exciting time for libraries, and we are looking forward to the next chapter.

Dear Friends: The last year was a remarkable time to be the fundraising organization for Madison Public Library: Opening the doors to a new Central Library was a once-in-a-lifetime achievement for Madison Public Library Foundation. The community banded together and met our ambitious private goal of raising over $8.8 million for Learning for a Lifetime: A Community Campaign for a New Central Library with an outpouring of enthusiasm and support. Thanks to the generosity of more than 3,200 individuals, businesses and organizations, Madison has a model urban library that attracts more than 750,000 visitors annually. We hope you’re enjoying the new space as much as we are. In addition to privately raising almost one-third of the total renovation project cost, the foundation was able to establish an endowment fund to ensure Central Library’s future for years to come. Construction costs came in under budget, and the savings were used to seed the endowment. Once we surpassed our campaign goal and donations continued to trickle in, we directed those to the fund as well. To celebrate Central Library’s opening, we hosted 665 guests at Foreword: A Grand Opening Gala, an event that gave campaign supporters the first look at the facility and raised $117,000 for its capital campaign. We continued with Stacked, a fundraising event featuring numerous musicians and DJs for a late-night party that brought in $17,000 for Central; and a public Grand Opening Weekend that included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours, art projects, live music, outdoor food carts and author appearances. The new Central Library also served as a host for the first Madison Public Library-led Wisconsin Book Festival, which was a resounding success. The library adapted the festival to a new year-round events format in addition to the four-day festival in October, making author appearances and book discussions more available to city residents. Our foundation raised more than $100,000 to help the Book Festival deliver more than 60 author presentations. In addition to raising private funds for a new Central Library, the foundation issued more than $45,000 in grants to the library this year for early childhood literacy efforts, Central Library grand opening events and professional development for staff. Our annual Ex Libris and Lunch for Libraries fundraisers continued to shine, raising $39,000 and $20,000, respectively, for our libraries and the Book Festival. The fun and excitement that comes from raising millions of dollars for a new central library is difficult to match, but we’re already feeling so much as we take on the role of promoting the flagship library’s spaces as well as innovative, new programming taking place there and in our eight other libraries. Media attention for The Bubbler makerspace programs -- whose media lab is on the first floor of Central -- has been outstanding, and attendance has only grown at these events led by local individuals sharing their skills with the community. We’re also enjoying a continuation of our efforts to provide the best possible facilities for our library system. The foundation will be kicking off another capital campaign in early 2014 for a new Meadowridge Library on Madison’s southwest side. The current facility is crowded, and the community’s needs can’t be met with its limitations. We’re working with neighborhood residents to gather community input for the design, programs and operations of the new library, which will be in the same plaza as its current location. It is a great honor and responsibility to work with our community to offer an easily accessible, world-class library system for users of all ages and abilities. We look forward to making each of Madison’s public libraries a treasure of collections, activities and resources for all to enjoy.

IES T I L I C A F G N I V IMPRO At the Madison Public Library and the Madison Public Library Foundation, we develop and sustain our worldclass library system. The library’s lasting impact is strengthened through enhancing facilities, curating arts and celebrating libraries as programming centers. This year, the foundation successfully completed the $9 million Learning for a Lifetime capital campaign for Central Library. The project finished under budget, which allowed the foundation to seed an endowment fund with $100,000 specifically for Central Library.

Art in Public Places Grant The foundation secures grants for continuing library programs and services. A $6,000 grant from the Madison Arts Commission helped fund Bookless’ stars, Nikki Johnson and Heath Matysek-Snyder, to install permanent art pieces in Central Library. More art can be seen in the Diane Endres Ballweg Gallery on Central Library’s third floor.

Central Library was completed thanks to generous support from community members, businesses and grants.

The vibrant children’s area at Central Library measures nearly 10,000 square feet, larger than many of the branch libraries’ entire facilities.

The work of Heath Matysek-Snyder (top) and Niki Johnson (above) is among the permanent art in the new Central Library. Both artists incorporated reclaimed items.

Grand Opening Weekend Celebrations The library and the foundation welcomed the new Central Library with more than 6,000 patrons throughout the Grand Opening Weekend. There was much merrymaking between the ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours, art projects, science demonstrations, Chocolaterian food, outdoor food carts, live music and, of course, reading! Throughout the weekend, the library offered a variety of drop-in activities for all ages. These included Bubbler creative activities in partnership with Sector67, ArtWorking, Silver Buckle Press and Mad City Makers; a photo booth; science programming from the Wisconsin Science Festival organizers; and arts programming from the Libraries as Incubator Project. A Wisconsin Book Festival preview event featured New York Times bestselling author Jojo Moyes reading from her new novel, The Girl You Left Behind. Additional events included tea from Dobra Tea, historian Ann Waidelich’s presentation on the history of Madison Public Library, a tour of Central’s art led by Gallery Director Trent Miller and hands-on science activities with assistance from Madison Environmental Group. The community collectively celebrated a reimagined, transformed building with countless new features, spaces designed for modern library use, and intriguing artistic and architectural elements.

Foreword Gala Before Central Library permanently opened its doors, donors and community leaders attended Foreword: A Grand Opening Gala, on September 7. The formal affair, complete with dinner and dancing, netted more than $117,000 for the new library.

More than 650 guests got all gussied up for Foreword: A Grand Opening Gala.

Guests sipped on creative cocktails and took turns in the photo booth while enjoying the first peek at the new facility. Foreword was made possible thanks to its many sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor BMO Harris Bank.

Stacked The party continued in Central Library with Stacked, the reply to the Bookless community event that helped clear out Central prior to construction. More than 1,500 people came to revel in the new library for Stacked on September 19. Patrons enjoyed art, music and drinks into the early morning hours. A dozen DJs and live bands set up on every floor of the library to entertain guests, who also enjoyed a late-night light show. The event sold out in advance, but small numbers of tickets were released at the door, and faithful library lovers waited to have a turn inside. The event raised more than $17,000.

Stacked was a hit and brought in more than $17,000 in ticket sales.

FRESH PROGRAMMING & TECHNOLOGY The Madison Public Library Foundation sustains a wide range of programming initiatives for the library. Madison Public Library’s innovative makerspace program brings in local artists and crafters to engage the community and facilitate knowledge exchange. Designed by Trent Miller, the project has already offered classes ranging from zentangle and screenprinting to brewing.

Bubbler programming is hands-on and allows participants to receive guidance from local makers and crafters.

As part of The Bubbler programming, the Media Lab has opened new creative possibilities in the library. Supported by a donation from the Weston Family, the Media Lab on Central Library’s first floor – outfitted with fullgrade professional software and equipment – is home to scheduled classes and drop-in hours for creating film, audio, animation, graphic art and more. When the Bubbler received $25,000 of a grant given to the Madison Arts Commission by the National Endowment for the Arts , the foundation raised the required matching funds, including support from Art Works and BMO Harris.

Improving Fiber Central Library’s media lab benefits from a new Internet connection speed of 1 gigabyte per second. This increased speed allows for the fast, seamless transfer of large files on the library’s computers and throughout the building on the library’s wi-fi network by hundreds of users simultaneously. Other libraries have seen boosted Internet speeds as well: Thanks to a project that will bring highspeed fiber access to all Madison public libraries in the next two years, the Goodman South Madison, Pinney, Meadowridge and Hawthorne Libraries will be the first to benefit from increased speeds in 2014.

The Media Lab houses special iPad stations used to create stop-motion animation videos and teach the basics of video design to audiences of all ages.

ESTIVAL F K O O B N I S N O C S I W E H T As part of innovative programming, Madison Public Library – in partnership with the Madison Public Library Foundation – hosted the Wisconsin Book Festival for the first time. People from 40 Wisconsin counties and 15 states attended the October festival. Wisconsin Book Festival events now take place year-round, including the Lunch for Libraries fundraiser that this year featured Ben Sidran, and a February evening event with Adam Mansbach. With Central Library as the main hub of events for the October festival, this year’s authors included Jon Ronson, Clive Thompson, Dan Chaon, Bill Ayers, Lynda Barry and several dozen others, both local and national. The festival drew more than 12,000 attendees to 69 free events.

Following an author discussion of “Wheel Fever” at the Wisconsin Book Festival in October, attendees took a bike ride around Madison.

The foundation privately raised $100,000 from grants, individuals, businesses and organizations to support the festival.

LOOKING FORWARD TO MEADOWRIDGE

An arts grant will fund Victor Castro’s (left) art installation made from TetraPaks at the new Meadowridge Library.

Since the beginning of the capital campaign for the new Meadowridge Library, the focus has been on building community. After three public meetings, the public enthusiastically approved the final design, which includes a fireplace, a community kitchen, abundant natural light, and more computers and tablets. The new library will move several doors down to the vacated Ace Hardware building, and the Meadowood Neighborhood Center will move into the former library space, with a shared 110-person community room and kitchen in between for joint programming.Construction will begin in spring 2014. Victor Castro, the artist-in-residence commissioned through a $10,000 grant from the Madison Arts Commission, is recycling TetraPaks into beautiful, socially engaged artwork to display in the new library. The campaign progress includes a $10,000 dollarfor-dollar match from the Friends of Meadowridge Library and many other generous gifts, pushing closer to the $200,000 goal.

HIPS STRENGTHENING PARTNERS

The Madison Public Library Foundation and the Madison Public Library team up with many community partners to enhance the community’s quality of life. 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Funded by a $3,700 foundation grant, this free program promotes reading to newborns, infants and toddlers while encouraging parent and child bonding through reading. In the program, families sign up and track their child’s reading. For every 100 books read, children receive a sticker. After finishing 1,000 books, children earn a free book. Pinney Library will serve as the pilot location for this program, with plans to expand it to all nine libraries. Family Fun Nights Everybody’s favorite puppies and more were back at Goodman South Madison’s Family Fun Nights. Made possible in partnership with The Capital Times Kids Fund, the Family Fun Night themes included rainforest animal guests, Disney movies and a Dr. Seuss party. Whole Foods’ Seeds to Read Whole Foods teamed up with the library this summer to offer Seeds to Read, an exchange of used books for seeds. The donated books were given to Madison Public Library. DreamBikes The nonprofit DreamBikes worked with Alicia Ashman Library on May 4 to help neighborhood kids improve bike safety and knowledge. DreamBikes works in underprivileged areas to set up bike shops where teens are hired to learn bike and sale skills.

The always-entertaining Soda Pups were part of the Family Fun Night programming at the Goodman South Madison Library.

Whole Foods partnered with the library for Seeds to Read, an exchange of used books for plant seeds.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS Design Like Mad On December 7, Central Library hosted Design Like Mad. This event brought 60 graphic designers, five interior designers, 14 developers, and six architects together for 12 hours to work on design projects for 20 nonprofit organizations. Final projects included designs for logos, business cards, letterhead, website development, marketing and promotional materials, interior design and architecture. The project benefited more than a dozen local nonprofit groups, including Madison Public Library. Design Like Mad is a perfect example of how Central Library’s new meeting spaces, updated facilities use policies and improved wi-fi are able to enhance the library’s community partnerships to support local efforts and host engaging events. To see event photos, videos and final projects from Design Like Mad, visit designlikemad.org or its Facebook page, or follow @designlikemad on Twitter.

George Treviranus and Cydney Wiedenbeck designed the library’s infographic.

Library Supports Public Humanities Projects Madison Public Library was one of four Madison organizations to benefit from a unique new partnership with the UW-Madison Center for the Humanities. The Public Humanities Fellows program focuses on providing graduate students with professional experience outside of Kelly Hiser academia. The Fellows are part of Engaging the Humanities, a multiyear project supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation that will create opportunities for UWMadison graduate students and faculty to broaden the impact of their research through workshops, seminars, programs and visiting scholars. Students were placed local non-profits, including the library. Historical musicology doctoral candidate Kelly Hiser worked at the library to advance its digital publishing initiatives. She conducted an audit of all the digital projects the library was involved in and made recommendations for archiving digital content, such as the digital material created through the library’s stop motion animation workshops and other classes in the Media Lab. Hiser presented a workshop in conjunction with the Wisconsin Book Festival in December. Nearly 60 participants heard a panel of librarians and authors talk about the possibilities of self-publishing. Many were excited to learn about the new direction that the library is taking by helping community members make and share their creative work.

Investing in everyone’s future Laura Schmiedicke wins 2013 Proctor Scholarship The Madison Public Library Foundation awarded Laura Schmiedicke the 2013 Elizabeth Proctor Scholarship, a fund to help library employees pursuing library science careers. Laura is graduating in May 2014 from the University of WisconsinMadison School of Library and Information Studies graduate program. The annual scholarship is given in honor of Elizabeth “Betsy” Proctor, who worked at the Madison Public Library from 1967 to her retirement in 1998. The fund was established by her family and friends. Laura was recently hired for a full-time position at Sequoya Library. Mondo Readers Several libraries, including Monroe Street, Pinney, Hawthorne and Goodman South, purchased Mondo readers, an educational children’s series for young readers to combat the “summer slump.” These additions were bought with endowment money. To learn how to establish an endowment or to participate in planned giving, visit the Madison Public Library Foundation’s website at mplfoundation.org/support.

Mohaupt Fund Established by Alvin and Ruth Mohaupt using Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs), the Mohaupt Fund generated $3,800 that was used to purchase graphic novels and teen titles at Sequoya. Teen titles and graphic novels have been flying off the shelves, according to librarians, and this fund ensures that the patrons can access their favorites without having to be on a wait list.

Laura Schmiedicke (second from right) was the 2013 recipient of the Elizabeth Proctor Scholarship.

Print Books Fund Each year, proceeds from the foundation’s endowment funds ensure a perpetual stream of income to support Madison Public Library in a variety of ways. The Print Books Purchase Fund helped the library embark on new projects, like establishing a “Too Good to Miss” collection at Monroe Street. These displays offer a wide assortment of books ranging from recently released to cult classics.
