London glamour, Maldives luxury… and same-sex marriages

C

onfeti Magazine was back in the UK in October, spreading the word about southern Spain’s pre-eminence as a wedding destination. Once again the National Wedding Show was the place every soon-to-wed couple wanted to be, gaining inspiration and ideas from the UK’s largest wedding exhibition. In London, added glamour was provided by Sugababe Heidi Range, on a day out with friends in preparation for her own marriage to TV presenter Dave Berry; while Confeti’s celebrity make-up expert Ariane Poole was on hand to offer consultations to visitors. (In her column this issue she advises how to avoid wedding make-up mistakes.) In Birmingham, the Confeti stand was inundated with exhibition visitors seeking advice and recommendations for weddingrelated companies and specialists based in Spain and Gibraltar. This autumn we also travelled to the Maldives for our honeymoon

travel feature. This stunning string of coral islands is known as “the jewel of the Indian Ocean” for a very good reason: its azure waters, silky beaches and intimate luxury make it the perfect crowning moment of a true dream wedding. Back on the Costa del Sol, we moved down the coast from Gibraltar – our featured wedding destination last issue – to Nerja. A favourite holiday haunt for tourists and visitors, this charming town at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol has an active expatriate community, many of whom are involved in wellestablished businesses offering the complete range of services and products to help you arrange your wedding in southern Spain. Our exclusive designer interview this issue is with milliner to the stars Philip Treacy, who explains why one of his creations can make a bride feel a million dollars on the best day of her life; while celebrity hairdresser of the year Tara Smith reveals how those bridal locks can be kept luscious and lovely under one of Philip’s hats.

Our regular fashion section includes tips on what’s hot for brides and their bridesmaids; classy wedding outfits and accessories to keep the young guests cute and comfortable; and the advantages, for grooms on limited budgets, of hiring a suit. We also take a look at the options for same-sex marriages in Spain, a country which – like the UK – introduced civil law partnership legislation in 2005 to enable all couples to celebrate their union in a legally recognised ceremony. Finally, we are pleased to announce – especially for our Spanish readers and clients –that we are publishing Confeti in Spanish this issue, and will be distributing the magazine at one of the premier national wedding and bridal fairs: Celebra in Málaga from 26 to 28 November. If your Spanish is okay, or even if you are just happy to look around, we definitely recommend a visit to this exhibition – to add another “native” touch to your special day.

SAME-SEX WEDDINGS IN SPAIN Jens Nagel for yourweddingmoments.com

In 2005, both Spain and the UK took extremely positive steps in recognising that same-sex couples should be able to celebrate their union in a legally recognised ceremony. Hence was born the civil law partnership in both countries.

M

any gay couples felt that the legislation was well overdue and wasted no time in planning their ceremonies and celebrating their partnership. Nick and Ivan did just that. In 2009, they were legally married in a civil ceremony in Girona, a beautiful town near where they lived in Barcelona. The day after their civil ceremony Nick and Ivan had a wedding blessing in a converted farmhouse they rented for the occasion. “We always wanted our wedding to be a happy occasion in a beautiful place where we declared our love and commitment to each other in front of our friends and family. Our guests had come from all over Europe and we were sure that they wanted to be present at the big moment. As lovely as the town hall was, we couldn't have had such a big, fun ceremony there and it would only have been possible midweek. Our Humanist ceremony, for us, will always be our true wedding. It allowed us to celebrate our marriage exactly where and how we wanted.”

Home or away… or both! Now that in Spain and the UK same-sex couples have been afforded the same rights and privileges as heterosexual couples, their choices for the wedding celebrations are just as varied. In the same way that heterosexual couples can opt for a simple civil ceremony in their home country and then a more personalised blessing and

42

CONFETI

wedding reception in Spain, now gay couples can as well. One such couple are Jude Satchell and Lisa Foley, who in 2009 had a civil ceremony in the UK and a blessing in Málaga. After some research on the internet, they came across the beautiful rustic charms of El Molino del Conde, in the heart of the Andalucian countryside, and knew it was where they wanted to hold their wedding celebrations.

“It was never our intention to have a full civil ceremony in the UK. There were a couple of reasons really why we wanted to go abroad, and particularly Spain. We wanted some sun and we wanted to manage our costs. Lisa in particular has a large family and we knew we couldn't afford to hold something in the UK for a large number of people. Plus, we really wanted something much more intimate with only very close family and friends,” Jude says.

Wedding With Pride photo by Luanna Francis Photography

As with civil weddings in the UK, civil partnerships work in very much the same way. The first steps are for the couple to register their intentions at their local registry office. This notice of civil partnership is then publicised by the registration office for 15 days. Once this period has passed, the date can be arranged for the actual ceremony. The registry office will also need to see proof of your age, nationality and identity. If you and your partner are planning on having a civil partnership ceremony in Spain, not only will you need to satisfy the criteria of your local town hall (ayuntamiento), district court (juzgado) or civil registry (registro civil) where the ceremony will take place, but you will also need to provide proof of residency, if one or both of you are not Spanish nationals. As always, it is best to check exactly which documents you need with the office concerned, but in general you will be required to present documents to confirm your age, nationality, identity and/or residency, such as the Certificado de Empadronamiento. At the time of writing, Gibraltar still does not offer civil ceremonies for same-sex couples, as it does for heterosexual couples, so Spain and the UK are currently the best options if you are living in any of those countries.

Wedding With Pride photo by Luanna Francis Photography

The legal bit…

Gary Tapp - yourweddingmoments.com

The day before they arrived in Spain, Lisa and Jude had their civil ceremony but they always had in mind that their blessing in Spain was going to be their actual ceremony. “The whole day in Spain was about celebrating our union in the company of our family and friends, but also doing that in the best way we could, utilising the Spanish culture that we were so lucky to be surrounded by. So, for our wedding meal we had local Spanish ladies from the village cook us tapas and paella. We also had a local Spanish guitarist play for us, and the owners of a small local hotel made our ‘rustic’ wedding cake. We even utilised the beautiful flowers and herbs in the garden to decorate the tables, and had olive oil from the local olive groves as favours. It really was about making the most of the beauty and resources that surrounded us. Our civil ceremony in contrast was simply the signing of a legal document. I guess it just paved the way really to allow us to have the day we truly wanted in the place we loved,” recalls Lisa.

Checklist for a same-sex wedding in Spain: I Talk to a wedding planner or do your own research to see if you can have a civil ceremony in Spain or the UK. ying between small coves, untouched by development and surrounded by impressive mountain scenery, is the quaint town of Nerja. At the easterly end of the province, only 50 kilometres from Málaga and within a one and a half hour drive to Granada, it really is an idyllic location for weddings. Protected by the mountains, the temperate climate makes Nerja an ideal place to have a wedding at any time of the year. Offering an excellent range of quality accommodation and leisure facilities… there are 13 kilometres of beaches, including the internationally famous Burriana beach that has once again been awarded the European Union’s “Blue Flag”, and the small coves below the impressive cliffs of Maro, which have been the inspiration of numerous artists setting up residence there. However, the spirit of Nerja is its magnificent Balcón de Europa,

a splendid esplanade along the edge of a soaring cliff – a beautiful setting for your wedding photos. The Legal Bit The only way for non-resident foreigners to marry legally in Spain is in a Catholic church. At least one of you must be Catholic and neither previously married. All paperwork must be dated within six months of your wedding day. There are a few priests who speak English but it is possible to bring your own priest to perform the ceremony. If you are unable to marry in the Catholic church, you can still enjoy a blessing ceremony performed by a non-religious English minister living in the area. It will still feel like a traditional wedding ceremony: the exchanging of rings, vows, lighting marriage candles and signing paperwork at the end. You will need to get married legally at a civil registry office in the UK, Ireland or Gibraltar. The Ceremony There are three churches to choose from in the area: El Salvador in Nerja; San Antonio de Padua in Frigiliana; and Nuestra Señora de las Maravillas in Maro. El Salvador The El Salvador Church is situated opposite the Balcón de Europa and close to what used to be the Guards Tower. It was erected in 1505, although the existing structure was not built until 1697. The exterior features a four-sided bell tower, while its interior is renowned for its 18th century frescoes decorating the Evangeline nave, and the modern mural of the annunciation by the painter Francisco Hernandez. This church is popular for Spanish weddings and foreign couples, either for the marriage ceremony itself or for a blessing. Rvdo. D. Andrés Francisco Pérez González (speaks English) Church donation: €270 Weddings Fridays and Sundays only. Plaza Cavana 13, Nerja San Antonio de Padua The Church of San Antonio de Padua, patron saint of Frigiliana, was built in 1676 and sits high up in the village of Frigiliana. It has a striking, gold-plated altar and capacity for around 200 people. The church has an attractive square out front, with panoramic views across the coast. This provides an impressive backdrop for wedding photos. Rvdo. D. José Maseda Vázquez (doesn’t speak English). Requires a deposit of €50 at the time of making the booking. Currently the fee is €270. Celebrating in Style Celebrations in Spain have been trading for seven years and have organised over 400 weddings. They are passionate about every wedding, ensuring the smooth running of each one, whether small and intimate for two (the bride and groom) or larger weddings with several hundred guests. They cover the area from Nerja down to Gibraltar but Nerja has always been a favourite location for them as it is smaller and more compact than some of the other resorts on the coast. It is also one of the few places where there are wedding venues within walking distance of the church.

El Salvador is a stunningly beautiful church situated right in the centre of the town on the famous Balcón de Europa. While this is the main parish church in Nerja they urge couples to also look at neighbouring villages: for example, Frigiliana, Maro, Benamocarra and La Viñuela for the smaller traditional Spanish church. You have the choice of having the ceremony in Spanish with a translator or they can arrange for an English-speaking priest to travel to your chosen church. There are many venues in the area to suit a wide range of budgets, with full menus including drinks reception and drink with the meal starting at just €40 in Playamaro. Menus in Nerja are generally a little more Spanish than in other areas but all venues can be flexible to suit the tastes of the foreign guests. Tel. (office): (+34) 952 535 688 Tel. WHERE WATERS MEET...

Katie

Janssen and Andy Waters chose the picturesque town of Nerja for their big day. How We Met A friend of mine was working at a computer software developer’s and took me along as her plus one to a work do, and that’s how I met Andy. He is a software programmer. We started dating when I plucked up the courage to call him and we went out that same night – that was almost 10 years ago!

it on. I opted for minimal jewellery as the dress was so detailed: Swarovskistudded earrings and a Swarovski tennis bracelet. My something blue in the end was turquoise lace underwear; my borrowed was a horseshoe charm of my mum’s which we hooked to my garter. My shoes were amazing – from Dune, and so comfortable

The Proposal My parents have a villa in Nerja and we have holidayed there as a family for over 20 years. Andy and I have been there several times on holiday. This particular evening he took me out to a beautiful restaurant overlooking the sea and proposed. I did have an inkling that something might happen as Andy was acting a little strangely. I painted my fingernails “just in case”. I said yes straight away – I had been waiting for a very long time!

My Wedding Planner Planning a wedding abroad was a tricky task and we decided that we would need a Spain-based wedding planner. We met Jenny McCloy in Spain to look at venues and straight away I knew I wanted her to help plan our big day. She was amazing, so professional and friendly; she kept everything organised and on track in the lead up to the day and on the day itself. All my guests commented on how brilliant she had been.

Getting Married Abroad Nerja is a very special place for us. After he proposed in Nerja, we started thinking how wonderful it would be to have our wedding there. We were married in the church on the main square exactly one year after Andy had proposed.

54

CONFETI

Finding the Dress I wore a Sancerre by Ian Stuart. It fitted perfectly and my custom-made, beaded, French lace bolero was perfect for the church. It was unusual for me to wear such a detailed dress (everyone expected something very plain) but I knew it was “the one” the second I tried

Capturing the Moments As soon as I said we were getting married in Spain a friend showed me her brother’s wedding album, shot by Jeremy Standley. I decided from seeing his work that we would love to have him photograph our day. He was the first person we booked for our day.

All in the Detail It really had to be Spanish – we chose a turquoise colour scheme to compliment the blue of the sky and sea. We had our guests’ names written on pebbles as the place settings, and Spanish fans with our names and the date as favours for our female guests. The Church The ceremony took place in a beautiful Catholic church called El Salvador; it is in the main square in Nerja by the Balcón de Europa. When I arrived at the church there were lots of locals stopping to see the bride arriving and wave, or wish us good luck. Some even came into the church and stood at the back to listen to the service. The church had some floral displays but did not really need any decoration as it is so ornate and beautiful inside.

The Reception We had eaten at Casa Luque before and always enjoyed our meals there – they serve traditional Spanish food using local produce with a modern twist. Myself and my three bridesmaids went to Spain three months before the wedding and had a menu tasting – everything was amazing but the choice of the scallops, the beef and dessert was unanimous. We also chose this venue because it was only a minute’s walk from the church and had a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea. The venue again didn’t need much decoration as the terrace looked stunning already in the Spanish sun. The tables were covered with white linen, each with a white rose centrepiece; the chairs were large wicker, each with a turquoise sash tied around it. Each table had the name of a destination Andy and I had visited together and the date of our visit – personalising the day.

Memorable Moments It’s such a cliché but our wedding day was truly the happiest day of my life. To be married to the man I love, in the brilliant sunshine of Nerja, my home from home, surrounded by all the people I love, all looking gorgeous and smiling. It’s a feeling I’m not sure can be rivalled! I also felt incredibly proud: proud of Andy, of my family and of all my bridesmaids – in particular my elder sister, who dropped two dress sizes to look fabulous on the day. And my parents, who did so much to help us achieve our perfect wedding day.

Luscious Bridal Locks Celebrity hairdresser of the year Tara Smith has worked with Hollywood heavyweights such as Demi Moore, Kevin Spacey, Neve Campbell and Anna Friel… he change of season is the perfect time to start following my simple hair rules. This will make sure that your locks are in top condition for your spring/ summer wedding. I am often asked how often we should be getting our hair cut. This depends on what hairstyle you have: if it’s sharp, blunt or precision-cut, then every four to six weeks; if you’ve got something more dishevelled with layers, you can wait up to three months. If you have longer hair in good condition and you are using moisturising treatments and

T

serum regularly, you can go up to four months. If your hair gets split at the ends have it cut immediately; once it starts to split it will fray like a piece of fabric. Hairdryers, straighteners and other heat appliances are fine to use as long as you are protecting hair, so use a hair primer such as Tara Smith Base Coat Serum and a heat protector like Organic Connect Thermal 2 Twenty (organiccoloursystems.co.uk). Invest in a good hairdryer like a T3 Tourmaline or ceramic, as these are better for your hair. Good brushes are also essential; you might think it’s costly to invest

in them but it’s cheaper than going for a blow out every week, and you’ll get a close result! Good quality hair irons like Corioliss or GHD can be used every day – the plates are titanium so they aren’t damaging to the hair. Try using irons on the lowest heat setting that will work for you. Don’t use cheap ones – it’s when you have to drag them through hair three or four times that it gets damaged, and you can’t use them every day. The best sort of brush depends again on what type of hair you have. If it’s curly, a wide-toothed comb such as Philip Kingsley’s is great. Denman paddle brushes or vent brushes are good for straight hair; and for blow-drying use a ceramic, larger, round brush as

this holds the heat in the middle so it becomes like a roller. I always advocate good nutrition as part of my hair advice. Hair is like a plant that needs to be nourished properly from the roots, and that means that what you put in your body is as important as what you put on it! I decided, as I have been doing so much recently, that it would be good to try the three-day juice detox plan. I can really recommend it if you are rundown/exhausted/bloated (all signs of stressed out bride-to-be) because by cleansing and refreshing your body you will be energised, revitalised and radiant – and that means glossy hair. tarasmith.com CONFETI

ONFETI prepares... Celebrity make-up artist Ariane Poole’s clients include Penelope Cruz and Uma Thurman…

hen getting ready for your big day, many brides think that they must wear more make-up. Well, this is simply not true. Here are six common wedding make-up mistakes that brides make unknowingly.

W 1.

Make-up that doesn’t look like you I always tell my brides that they should be true to themselves. So if you are someone who wears no make-up then keep it simple. Don’t let anyone, even a make-up artist, tell you that you should or need to wear more on the day if it doesn’t feel right. At the same time if you are someone who loves their make-up – the liner, the lips the false lashes, etc. – don’t be tempted to go au natural unless you have tried it before. Wear all the make-up you want to if that is your signature look.

2. Matchy matchy No longer do you need to match all the bridesmaids’ make-up so they lose their individuality. Your bridesmaids will thank you if you allow them to coordinate with each other while still looking right for them. Take into consideration their skin tone and age when deciding on the makeup look. 3. Too trendy Although you may want to be a modern bride beware of trends. What is on trend today or this season may make you cringe in a few years time. Remember that

Wedding make-up mistakes… and how to avoid them you’ll want to look back at photos and think “Ahhh” – not “Yuck! What was I thinking?”

4. Panic beauty So many brides plan facials, false tans, manicures, Botox and teeth whitening a week before the wedding, hoping they will look great on the day. What commonly happens in these situations is that skin erupts, teeth become over sensitive and faux tans look fake. Solution: plan ahead. Start or continue a good skincare routine and see skin specialists, dentists, etc., at least six months before the wedding day. Do a test tan a few weeks before your wedding and then have it topped up three days before. For teeth whitening, I suggest making sure they look their best with Pearl Drops Hollywood Instant Whitening. To make sure your nails look divine, try a long-lasting manicure two days before the wedding.? 5. When to shine I know all brides want to look radiant both on the day and in the photos but be careful that you don’t look greasy. Keep the t-zone shine free; highlight the tops of the cheekbones and under the arch of the brows. If you are not a fan of powder, try one of the many antishine primers which go on under your foundation, or tinted moisturiser to keep shine at bay. 6. Make-up disaster Whether you are using a professional make-up artist or doing it yourself, have a trial run about six to eight weeks before the wedding so that you know what you are getting, and take pictures – even if the make-up artist is someone famous or you have known them for ages. The trial is the time to try something different to see if you like it. DON’T try anything new or different on the wedding day. arianepoole.com CONFETI

ONFETI real weddings ...

Inspirational setting... and original style Harry and Michelle’s sparkling “shabby chic” wedding at a private cortijo in Marbella Our vision… We always knew that we wanted a private and intimate venue for our wedding but it was just a question of finding the right one. We chose the cortijo out of many we looked at. We had viewed a lot of great venues with our wedding planner Heather but fell

in love with this one because of its stunning grounds. We were not restricted on what time the wedding had to finish due to noise, so we partied all night and into the early hours of the morning. There were numerous bedrooms that were versatile for suiting our guests and family

needs. The pool area was a great size for the table placement for the wedding day and, finally, we were just inspired with the place. Our style... I would call it “glamorous shabby chic”. I started off by designing my own wedding dress and took the crystal detail from the top of the dress for my inspiration for the table decorations. We had large crystal napkin holders and crystals scattered over the tables. We also had heart crystal and shabby chic style name placements. We hung hundreds of romantic love quotes in all the trees around the villa to put our guests in a romantic mood, and

five large giant silver candle sticks to complete the look. We also had beautiful white Bali umbrellas for the ceremony, provided by Laura at Reviva Weddings, which gave a really original and stylish look to our blessing ceremony. The highlights... There were so many… I think seeing the ceremony set up for the first time really got the excitement going; walking down the aisle and seeing my husband-to-be Harry waiting for me; my mum and the bridesmaids looking absolutely glamorous; having our photos taken by our fantastic photographer David Toms… and the speeches, which were hilarious and emotional.

The dress... I designed the dress myself and had it made by a dressmaker called Lynda Yong at Twin Cheeks in Ascot. She was absolutely amazing and really included me in every part of the process during all the dress fittings. The funny thing was that when I first went to her I said I didn’t want sequins and I didn’t want a veil. Little did I know that Swarovski crystals don’t actually sparkle that much on their own, but after Lynda showed me a few sequins mixed in with the crystals… wow did they sparkle! The top bodice Swarovski crystal fabric was then hand-stitched onto white duchess satin. The skirt was made from layers and layers of white tulle and I took this inspiration from a dress Sarah Jessica Parker wore to a red carpet event. Lynda then made me a long veil and the moment I put it on I loved it. So I’m now a convert to the veil and sequins! Our treasured moment... I really couldn’t just pick one. The whole day was absolutely amazing; we couldn’t have asked for it to have gone any better. I did ask this question to some of our guests and they said the secret singing waiters was a great idea. The food was delicious and the ceremony looked like a fairytale. We would like to say a huge thank you to Heather, Laura, Kathryn, Tres Divos, Lizzy and David for helping us make our dream wedding come true.

Born in Gibraltar, owner Daniella James learnt her talents from her mother. She has attended many of the best cake courses in London over the years, and draws on her experience when designing cakes for brides-to-be. Daniella makes and designs traditional wedding cakes with

two, three or four tiers. She likes to keep the fillings as simple as possible, with vanilla, chocolate and lemon being the most popular, but may also make banana or carrot cakes. The flavours may also be alternated between each tier to please all members of the wedding party. For those weddings who want to stray from the habitual traditions and offer originality to guests, Daniella also designs cupcake towers. These use 30 to 150 cupcakes, depending on the size and budget of the wedding, which are a stunning feature and centrepiece for the big day. Each guest will have their own cupcake, with a small cake included as the top tier for those who want to keep a touch of tradition. Daniella will also supply birthday cakes and rich fruitcakes for Christmas. All her cakes are baked to order, and delivery between Estepona and Puerto Banuú is free. deliciouscakesandtreats.com

What dreams are made of... Working from her studio near Marbella Fiona produces beautiful gowns, wedding apparel and accessories to order, surrounded by wonderful silk fabrics, delicate laces, Swarovski crystals and freshwater pearls. “It is a privilege to be able to translate my passion for good design into a fabulous gown or an embroidered waistcoat,” she says, “and to contribute so much to that most special of days.” At the first consultation thoughts and ideas are brought alive on the sketchpad. Once the design has been decided the first pattern is cut and a toile is made, followed by a series of fittings. Any couture techniques are employed throughout the production process, ensuring an exceptional quality of finish. Each garment is created as an individual work of art, with its own personality, “just as no two individuals are alike”. Fiona has always worked closely with her favourite photographers, hairstylists, makeup artists and florists, creating a theme or ambience as a backdrop for the bride. This has now been extended to include invitation design, cakes and catering, wedding transport, spectacular venues, entertainment, legal and translation, etc. A full or part planning service can be provided as required, making your wedding a truly “bespoke” affair. fisantamaria.com

Life Through a Lens Anna Gazda likes to call herself a photographer at large. Whenever she walks out with her camera she says she feels like a predator observing everything calmly yet intensely –especially now she has moved to the Costa del Sol (Frigiliana), as it is amazingly lit most of the time. The abundant Spanish light and its quality scored high on her “relocation pros” list. ONFETI asks ...

My wedding is in August and I am worried that I might sweat off my make-up. What tips can you give me to avoid this from happening? I would also like to know what trends to go for? Jenny Hughes, 21, Newcastle.

Q

Hair and make-up artist Lorraine Romaine replies: Many August brides ask me this question. My most important tips are: ensure that your make-up artist uses a proven waterproof make-up and mascara, and use a soft tissue to absorb any beads of sweat and/or tears. It also helps if you have a cool shower before you start to get ready and have your hair and make-up applied in an airconditioned room. When outside, use a fan, and have one of your bridesmaids carry a parasol for shade. If you follow this advice you will look stunning right up to the end of your celebrations. As you probably know, next season’s bridal hair and make-up trends are based on the wedding fashions at this year's shows. The dress trends are highlighting accents of ruffles and lace, and head-dresses are definitely out. Tiaras, flowers or bows are the hair adornments of choice. This means that hairstyles will be created around these centrepieces. Complicated hair-ups with a tiara, or asymmetrical styles with loose curls incorporating flowers or large bows, are the musthaves for next season! Make-up trends are shaping up to be very natural, with somewhat muted tones and a mat finish. 72

The wedding of Julia and Jamie March The ceremony was celebrated in the beautiful village of Frigiliana. Guests wound their way through the labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets lined by whitewashed village houses to find the church in the centre of the town – and then enjoyed a glass or two in the shade of the old plaza waiting for the heat of the day to recede. The reception continued at Cortijo Bravo in the hills above Velez-Málaga, surrounded by orchards and views of La Maroma. Lucho and Leticia provided beautiful music to accompany the sunset and DJ Pedro played until sunrise (well, almost!). Huge thanks go to Jeremy Standley and his associate Jennifer for the photography; with special thanks also to Carla Mazzeo at Reviva Weddings for all her endless help and planning – it wouldn't have happened without her.

PLANNING TO PERFECTION Interview by Natasha Johnson Photography David Toms and Jeremy Standley

M

arbella-based wedding planner Sue Danker is a woman with a lot of passions: a love of the Mediterranean and its stunning scenery; the gastronomic delights that are impossible not to indulge in; and exploring the beautiful places that the Costa del Sol has on offer. So what better way to combine business with pleasure than by using her personally gained knowledge to help couples celebrate their dream weddings in Spain? With over 100 weddings under her belt, and husband and business partner Howard by her side, there is very little she does not know about the Spanish wedding industry. Confeti spoke to the

director of Spanish Dream Weddings to learn a little more about the driving force behind the company. Being a married couple that helps others to get married… is a lot of fun but can sometimes be a little too much “together time”! Some days we simply enjoy the weddings and it is like having a day out. We both enjoy meeting the wedding guests and Howard is a great one for helping the guys with their speeches. A day in my life means… no two days are the same. Certain months see a concentration of viewing trips where we drive couples around to help them choose their venues, and in the lead up to June and September my hands nearly fall off from doing so much typing of event summaries and wedding budgets. My favourite part is going out on factfinding missions to look for new venues and churches. If I had to name a Spanish Dream Weddings highlight it would be… last year when we completed 60 weddings in our second season, which I was very

proud of. Just before the season kicked off I had a baby girl so it was a manic year but a landmark one all the same. On top of that we made a TV programme, which was shown on Irish TV and called “The Great Escape”. The cameras followed our progress in setting up the business, which started in Ireland in 2007, to our first big wedding, which took place in the Kempinski Hotel in Estepona. The ratings were great and it was a super way for us to put the company name out to the public. As a result people feel like they know us personally and this is important. My motto in life is… don’t sit back and wait for things to happen; they probably never will. Make things happen! I love that the Spanish wedding industry is… very fast-paced and is expanding at a phenomenal rate. We are all passionate about what we do and we value this work, especially during the crisis. When a wedding is over… I hope that the couple have had a good experience and will tell all of their friends to call us! We generally have a very good relationship with our couples and we like to keep in touch and hear about the new babies being born.

In five years time I see myself… turning Halo Salon in Marbella, which I’ve just bought, into Marbella’s wedding headquarters. We will have a hair and beauty section, a studio for photographers

My dream wedding in Spain would be… a ceremony in the amphitheatre in Villa Padierna. The party would take place in the villa at the Marbella Club. All of the guests would wear white and I would wear purple. Flowers would be a mix of white and purple hydrangeas. The food would be buffet style and casual and the bar would serve champagne and purple mojitos. Our own wedding took place eight years ago in Dublin and, as we were of different religions, a religious ceremony was out for us. I had to organise a registry office wedding, which was beautiful but lasted all of seven minutes! So when we are 10 years married in August 2012 I plan for us to renew our vows and I think this is what I would like. If I had to describe myself in a few words… I would say hardworking, loyal but a bit too wild sometimes!

WEDDING EXTRAVAGANZA Newlyweds-to-be flocked to London and Birmingham to plan their big day – with a little help from Confeti Magazine. The National Wedding Show was the place to be in October as couples and their families and friends visited Earls Court in London and the NEC in Birmingham for inspiration galore at the UK’s largest wedding exhibition.

82

CONFETI

London We teamed up with Gibraltar Tourist Board, Hour Weddings and The Rock Hotel for the London show. Monica Coumbe from Hour Weddings helped to hand out magazines from the stand, and enthused later, “The brides-to-be loved it.” The London event received a visit from pop princess Sugababe Heidi Range, who toasted her future marriage to TV heartthrob Dave Berry with a girl’s day out. Brides-to-be were also given a unique opportunity to have a personal consultation with our very own beauty expert, Ariane Poole. Birmingham The Confeti stand at the Birmingham show was virtually mobbed over the three days, and the team were run off their feet. All copies of the magazine had been snapped up by Sunday lunchtime! Bombarded with requests for wedding company recommendations and advice, and helping visitors to fill in forms to win the chance to have their wedding featured in the magazine… it was non-stop work. We did manage one quick break though, to watch the stunning catwalk show, which featured a selection of the latest in bridal and occasion wear from some of the UK’s top designers and manufacturers – including Justin Alexander Collection, Benjamin Roberts, Sottero & Midgley, Jonathan James Couture, Aire Barcelona by Rosa Clara and the stylish Candy Anthony. We are delighted to announce the winner of our competition is Hayley Shortinan. We will leave you with some of the shows’ highlights and trends for 2011. See you at the National Wedding Show in February.

THE JEWEL

of the

Indian Ocean By Nicola McGeorge

For this issue Confeti decided to review dream wedding and honeymoon destination the Maldives. A byword for luxury, romance and tropical bliss, this beautiful string of low-lying coral islands, with their pristine combination of white sand beaches and lush tropical vegetation, provides the ideal private island hideaway.

Quick Facts Time: GMT+5hrs Capital island: Male Total islands: 1,190 Inhabited islands: 200 Currency: Rufiyaa (US$1 = MRF 12.85) Religion: Sunni Islam Language: Dhivehi (official) Climate: the temperature ranges between 24°C (75°F) and 33°C (91°F) throughout the year. The Maldives lies in two rows of atolls in the Indian Ocean, just across the equator. The country is made up of 1,190 coral islands formed around 26 natural ring-like atolls, spread over 90,000 square kilometres. Ninety-nine percent of the Maldives is made up of sea. The people of the islands are widely dispersed, with about 200 inhabited islands. About 90 islands are developed as tourist resorts and the rest are uninhabited or used for

agriculture and other livelihood purposes. My partner Andy and I decided to visit the north and south of the Maldives. We would spend six days at the Beach House, located on a private island in the unspoilt atoll of Haa Alifu. This resort caters for the discerning traveller in an idyllic setting of clear turquoise water, pristine beaches and flourishing virgin flora and fauna. We would then move south for five days to the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island. An island paradise nestled in South Ari Atoll, three degrees above the equator, Conrad Maldives is set on two private islands, joined by a footbridge across a dreamy blue lagoon.

class, there is no going back! From the warm greeting in the elegant airport “First Lounge”, which provides a sanctuary away from the outside world, to boarding and being able to stretch out in total comfort with the privacy of your own luxurious bed… Andy was enthralled with the touch button privacy screen, as it meant he could shut me out when I annoyed him. He, of course, did this constantly! I hate flying – it usually takes me days to recover from a long-haul flight – but for the first time I didn’t feel as though I had been run over by a bus. My skin wasn’t dehydrated (thanks to the complimentary Elemis goodies), and the wide range of food options and excellent service made the flight a thoroughly enjoyable experience. A great way to start any trip, but especially for honeymooners. britishairways.com

The Flight We decided to fly with British Airways as they offered thrice-weekly direct services from Gatwick to Male, and great deals for honeymooners. We opted for Club World. Be warned: once you experience first

The Art of Seclusion The Beach House sits at the most northerly tip of the Maldives, in the pristine, lagoon-ringed Haa Alifu Atoll, little explored by foreigners. Here you will find world-class service, delivered amidst immense open spaces of dazzling turquoise waters, white powdery beaches and distinctive Maldivian architecture. On touching down at Male International Airport, we were delighted to find every single aspect had been taken care of. We were greeted by a Beach House representative, who escorted us to our domestic transfer, a 45-minute plane-hop over the ocean, followed by a 45minute speedboat ride to our private island idyll. The crew were fun and entertaining; look out for Mohamed – he is a real character. In peak season there is now the option of a 75-minute direct seaplane transfer. Exhausted and in need of a little TLC, we were glad to finally

arrive at what can only be called paradise. The private island resort features 83 beautifully designed contemporary thatched villas including Beach Villas, Suites, Water Villas, Ocean Villas, one Grand Water Pavilion and a Grand Beach Pavilion. Each comes complete with a private pool and a butler to tend to your every need. Our villa host Nasheed (who couldn’t have done more for us) showed us to our Water Villa, perched over a lagoon. You can opt to take in the breathtaking views from a Maldivian swing, sun loungers or your own infinity pool. Glass-panelled floors allow quiet observation of the exotic marine life, while steps lead directly onto the soft sandy lagoon for a refreshing dip. The whole resort offers just the right balance between style, luxury and amenities. The public pools are particularly fabulous. Imagine a fairytale pool of clear water in a rainforest and you'll

begin to understand the vibe at Amazon, a traditional Maldivianstyle bar. The pool, fed by a waterfall which gurgles playfully away in the background, has submerged seating and a number of waterjets; while the low-key Maldivian Infiniti Bar has a deck and swimming pool that extends lazily over the water, fusing at one with the ocean. Look out for the

incredibly cute (rather large) fruit bats, who have taken to swooping over the guests’ heads. With an extensive choice of four restaurants, each meal was as individual as the resort and I was extremely grateful for the opportunity to try many new dishes. My favourite restaurant was Saffron – a stunning over-water setting specialising in local delicacies inspired by wider Asian influences.

The wine list is built around the five tastes (salt, sweet, bitter, sour and umami) which, together with sake and shochu martinis, provided the perfect complement. I highly recommend the Indian-themed evening. It is honestly the best I have ever had. My favourite dish? The Sri Lankan-style fish soup. I am never one to opt for this dish but it was truly out of this world. Andy preferred the Medium Rare restaurant. Located in a stunning beachfront setting, it serves the freshest fish and seafood, together with premium meats sourced from organic global suppliers, fused with herbs from the restaurant gardens. Boutique wines from around the world are selected for the story they tell and the methods used. The whole ambience just exudes romance. Well, dining under the stars… what more can you ask for?

Our Highlights The Cellar An underground treasure trove, housing the resort’s extensive wine collection and home to weekly wine dinners created by the executive chef and sommelier… this experience pairs gourmet creations with specially selected wines, offering guests an insight into the intricacies and techniques of wine pairing – including fun “blind tasting”. Andy, who fancies himself as a bit of a wine buff, was really looking forward to this event. However, as I do not drink, I presumed I would be bored. Wrong! We started of with a

cheese tasting, before selecting our favourites. I even found myself a new favourite: Swiss cheese Tete de Moine. We then moved on to the cold cuts, and I was happy to note many were from Spain. The wine tasting turned into a slightly heated affair as Andy disagreed with most of what the sommelier was saying. One tasted game, the other couldn’t, and on it went. By the end of the night, after one Petrus too many, Andy was hanging off the cellar ladder with my pearl hair band on his head. A fun night had by all.

The Cast Away Experience If you decide on only one excursion on your trip, do choose this one. The crew dropped us off on an uninhabited island located 10 minutes away from the resort. With a picnic and chilled champagne waiting for us, we were left to our own devices for the rest of the afternoon. Completely secluded you can sunbathe and even snorkel in the nuddie. Just be sure to wear suncream or you will end up with an extremely red, sunburnt bottom, unable to sit down for days like a certain Miss McGeorge… ahem! Barefoot Luxury The second part of our trip took us to the Conrad Rangali Island, part of the Hilton hotel family group, which we reached by a 30-minute seaplane flight from the capital, Male. This beautiful resort is spread over two islands, linked by a 500-metre walkway, and surrounded by a deep blue lagoon and dramatic coral reef. It has twice been voted “Best Hotel in the World” and several times “Best Resort”, so we were really excited to finally get there. After being greeted with icecold, aromatherapy-scented cloths we were whisked off to our Spa Water Villa. The elegant villas, set on stilts over the ocean, offer sweeping views of turquoise surrounds complemented by iridescent sunsets. With sea view baths, private sun decks, espresso machines and Molton Brown bathroom goodies, it is almost impossible to imagine anything more beautiful. Underwater Restaurant

The Conrad has two spas, each with its own product range and philosophy. The Spa Retreat is a self-contained over-water resort offering a wide range of holistic treatments; while the Over-Water Spa offers at extensive range of therapies and rituals using exclusive products in glass-floored treatment rooms. We booked in for a couple’s massage, both suffering from back pain. Let me tell you: do not let the size of these dainty, doll-like therapists fool you. They are VERY strong… painful at times, but the most relaxed I have felt in ages.

Our last night was spent at the Ithaa, the world’s first all-glass undersea restaurant. It is set five metres below the surface with 180-degree panoramic underwater views, serving contemporary Maldivian cuisine in a set menu composed of 23 different dishes over four courses and a “Wine Concept” dedicated to champagne. I wasn’t feeling too well on this particular night, but there was no way I was going to cancel: I had been looking forward to it for months. Was it worth it? Hell yes. Not only did a gigantic smiling sting ray swim over our heads but we also spotted a reef shark (this is

Snorkelling

apparently very rare; our waiter was very miffed that he had missed it). With capacity for 14 people, it is intimate and incredibly romantic. I asked if there had been any marriage proposals in Ithaa. I was told that one brave fellow had left his girlfriend sipping champagne while he ran upstairs and jumped into the water. He then swam down to the restaurant, banged on the glass and, when she looked up, he held the ring to the window. Now, come on gentlemen: beat that one. This evening was magical and one of the places you must visit in your lifetime. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Tel. (+960) 668 0629 conradhotels1.hilton.com

South Ari Atoll is renowned for its aquatic life, and premier dive sites are within reach of the resort in a matter of minutes. For those looking to take their first underwater steps, the resort’s numerous house reefs offer the perfect setting for allowing guests to fully experience the idyllic underwater paradise. We had a bit of a shock on the first day as we had literally been on the island only an hour when we spotted an eight foot (2.5metre) shark by our villa. Slightly spooked, we turned around only to find a sting ray swimming towards us. Throughout the week we saw parrot fish, needle fish and baby sharks galore. However, I STILL haven’t seen a turtle… the quest continues.

The Mini-Moon Whether you have an early flight, are too tired to drive home or just want to start your honeymoon in style, in this regular feature we will be reviewing the finest hotels located close to major airports. Langshott Manor is very different from the usual bland hotels found near airports. Located only eight minutes from London’s Gatwick Airport, set in peaceful country surroundings, the beautifully restored 16th century manor house is ideal for a first or last stop in England or an exclusive-use wedding celebration. The hotel is surrounded by three acres (1.2 hectares) of stunning gardens and an ancient moat. With elegant interiors featuring exposed beams, polished oak panelling and glowing log fires, the property has the charm of a bygone age with all the modern luxuries for discerning guests. We arrived in the evening and were delighted to find the staff genuinely friendly and very

efficient. The receptionist helped us with an urgent courier delivery: no hassle, no questions – she just arranged it enthusiastically. As it was getting quite late we decided to have our supper before being shown to our room. Mulberry is the award-winning restaurant of the hotel, where one can indulge in fine food and wine… and we did. My pan-seared fillet of hake, smoked potato croquette, sweet corn and grape was beautiful; while Andy enjoyed the braised shoulder and cutlet of Romney Marsh lamb with textures of onion. If we hadn’t been so tired we would have gone for the tasting menu, which looked divine. Our picturesque bedroom, King Henry VIII (all are individually named), featured a restored four-poster bed, a working fireplace, the finest Egyptian linen and views overlooking the moat. Each bedroom has a private bathroom, fitted with marble and granite power showers and deep baths.

After the long flight, being able to soak in a traditional roll top bath was sheer bliss. Following a good night’s sleep, we explored the mature gardens and discovered colourful herbaceous borders, a formal rose garden and beautiful willows. After feeding the ducks, we had afternoon cream tea in the charming gardens (which ended with a fight over the last delicious scone). We ended this perfect day with a game of croquet. Experiencing the charms of this Elizabethan manor house and gardens was a superb end to our incredible adventure. Langshott Manor Surrey Tel. (+44) (0) 1293 786680 alexanderhotels.co.uk
