Gibraltar – the definitive wedding destination

hen John Lennon famously married Yoko Ono in Gibraltar in 1969, the three-minute ceremony by the Registrar was a distinctly nondescript affair. Couples can still follow in their illustrious footsteps today but choosing to wed in Gibraltar now opens up a stunning range of options – from the ceremony to the reception. y great-grandfather started the family jewellery business in 1886 and around 25 years ago, after having studied gemology in New York, I decided to start designing as well. I started by concentrating on more classic and traditional styles, but over the past three or four years I have decided to expand and focus more on colour and artistic designs. Everything I now create is handmade personally by me at my studio above the shop in Marbella. Jewellery is a piece of art, an instant of life, a snapshot in which the magic of something that has happened is captured. When choosing any piece of jewellery, people must feel something when they see it – they must relate to it and be inspired by the beauty of its nature, and this factor is extremely important when choosing engagement rings. The majority of people have conservative ideas about engagement rings – which may be subconsciously affected by external factors such as family and tradition – but I advise people to break free from this mould, to be daring and choose something their heart tells them to, rather than their head. When people come to my shop to choose engagement rings, I want to awaken their senses and show them rings that they perhaps would never have thought of buying before. I want to offer more options than the typical engagement ring, perhaps with coloured gems, adding a touch of art or spice to the ring, or a different setting, for example. I watch my clients when viewing rings, and it is often very easy to realise which ring suits that particular couple, because of the way they react when first seeing it. Gut instinct is very important and should have a greater input than any other factor. In my opinion, it is better to share the joy of choosing the engagement ring rather than the ring being a surprise. This enables the couple to share the excitement and also ensure that the bride actually likes
the ring she receives. Many husbands-to-be may think they know what kind of ring their partner would love, but are not often right. I believe that it is more truthful of the husbandto-be to bring his fiancé along to choose the ring, as he is not therefore presuming what she wants, or surprising her with something she may not like. However, if he is fully intent on surprising her, the future husband should pay very close attention to the jewellery she currently wears, including her style (for example, classic or modern), designs, and favourite colours. Regarding the quality of the ring, many aspects must be acknowledged. The quality of the ring is much more important than the size. For example, a high quality twocarat ring (carat is the size of the diamond) is better than a four-carat low-quality ring that may have more inclusions (faults in the stone, measured by clarity). Quality is also measured by colour and cut – the whiter a diamond, the higher quality it is (diamond colour ranges from highest quality white to lower quality yellow), and the cut concentrates on how light is reflected through the facets of the diamond. All diamonds come with a quality certificate, enabling the buyer to ensure its quality and registered specifications. Family heirloom engagement rings may also be given and I advise that, although the elements of rings may be changed to be made more modern, one must take care as the stones, particularly if they are not diamonds, may be weak and susceptible to breakage. My final advice for buying the perfect engagement ring is to ensure that it is exactly what the couple want, and no-one else. If you choose to break free from tradition, then do so, and ensure that when buying your engagement ring the best quality is chosen, bringing you the uttermost joy out of this aspect of your engagement.

The Special Effect Wedding photographer Gary Tapp explains the ins and outs of a new process that could take your wedding shots to the next level. Infrared photography offers a new look for the wedding album, with ethereal greys and whites and a smooth, glowing skin tone. Churches and wedding venues take on a whole new look, but the technique is tricky amidst the busy setting of a wedding. Many of my clients are looking for something different from the norm when it comes to their 44

wedding, and this has led to a revival of black and white photography and wedding photojournalism. Black and white and faux colour digital infrared photography is a further step in a bold new direction. The images sell themselves with their uniqueness and mystery as they record the light that cannot be seen by the naked eye, and also in an unexpected way: grass and green trees look nearly white, while skies, water and ponds take on a black tone.
With faux colour infrared photography the finished image is open to unlimited artistic interpretation in post processing. Using a dedicated infrared digital camera I like to sprinkle a few of these infrared images in the mix during the day to give the client something a little bit special.

A GUIDE TO JEWISH WEDDINGS IN SPAIN Holding a Jewish wedding ceremony is a popular and well-supported option here on the Costa del Sol. With experts in the fields of wedding planning, kosher catering and several accommodating rabbis, it couldn’t be easier to plan a wedding that respects every aspect of the Jewish tradition.

ith synagogues in Torremolinos, Marbella, Nueva Andalucía and Estepona, and even larger communities based in Gibraltar and Málaga, there is an ever-increasing number of Jewish weddings being held in the area.
Ceremony Until recently most Jewish Brits would invite their rabbi to hold their ceremony here in Spain. However, Scott Gibbons of Sunshine Weddings (sunshineweddingsspain.com) met with Rabbi Khalili of the Torremolinos congregation seven years ago to see how they could promote Jewish weddings in Spain to British residents. As a result, Khalili began developing a relationship with the London Beth Din and is now authorised to provide a ketubah (wedding certificate) here in Spain on their behalf. This is very reassuring to British Jews as this certificate will be passed down to their children. The London Beth Din will expect a rabbi to ensure that any bride and groomto-be provide their parents’ wedding certificate and a certificate of bachelorhood to confirm that they are unmarried.
Rituals and traditions In any Jewish wedding ceremony, the bride and groom must stand under a canopy called a chuppah. This is the area where the rabbi will marry the couple. The chuppah represents the home and generally has four corners and a roof

similar to a house. The bride must walk around the groom seven times and this represents building a protective wall around the couple while both their parents are invited to stand under the chuppah throughout the ceremony. Once the rabbi has married the bride and groom, the groom will be invited to “break the glass”. This is a tradition where a glass is wrapped in a napkin and stamped on at the chuppah. It represents the destruction
of the Holy Temple in biblical times and also identifies the faith of the bride and groom through happy and sad times.

Recent changes to legislation now permit venues outside of the registry office to conduct the wedding service, which has greatly boosted the potential appeal of The Rock. Legal requirements remain simple and Gibraltar offers various wedding planning services to assist would-be couples through the process. Provisional bookings can be made through the Registry Office up to two years in advance. There are several historical buildings and natural settings available for hire. These include: I The Alameda gardens were developed in 1816 under the instruction of General Sir George Don, Lieutenant-Governor of Gibraltar, for the purpose of providing civilians with an area of beauty for rest and relaxation. Today the gardens have developed into the Botanical Gardens and house an open-air theatre. Wedding services are conducted in “The Dell” an Italian-style garden laid out by a Genoese gardener in 1842. I The Mons Calpe Suite at the cable car station at the top of The Rock is possibly one of the most unusual venues to choose to exchange vows, but it offers stunning panoramic views across the European coast and to Africa. I The Caleta Hotel, The Eliott Hotel, The Rock Hotel and Queen’s Hotel are all permitted to host marriage ceremonies in their grounds, and offer teams of advisers to assist with arrangements.

THE KING OF HAUTE COUTURE DESIGNS A FLAMENCO-INSPIRED MASTERPIECE FOR HIS GODDAUGHTER
On 31 July
the Cathedral of St Mary the Crowned was the venue for the elegant wedding ceremony of Elizabeth Husband and Oliver Hawksley. Elizabeth is the granddaughter of John and Anita Galliano, who were married at the very same cathedral in 1954, where their three children, Rosemarie, John, and Inmaculada, were also baptised. The couple, both doctors, reside in England, but with this strong family link to Gibraltar the decision to hold the wedding on The Rock was a foregone conclusion! Another element of the wedding that was going to be a “sure thing” was the designer of her wedding dress – noneother than her maternal uncle and godfather, and head designer at Christian Dior, John Galliano. Created exclusively for his niece, Elizabeth’s magnificent dress was the piéce de résistance of the wedding. We asked Elizabeth for the story behind the creation of this couture masterpiece. With a smile that never left her face, the bride told us how her uncle had asked her to produce a scrapbook with all her ideas and inspirations behind her dream wedding. “The Book” contained magazine cut-outs, photos of people, flamenco dancers and sketches. Using the scrapbook as his guide, Galliano designed two dresses for her to choose from, and the first design captured everything she had hoped for…

A sweetheart neckline with a handembroidered bodice, sparkling crystals all over the dress. The skirt was a glorious tribute to the flamenco dress, with its many layers and a cascading trail. The veil – in itself a work of art – was a fivemetre long full cathedral veil, delicately hand-embroidered.
A priceless creation inspired by the love of an uncle for his niece. He created every aspect of the final “look”, including the choice of accessories. Elizabeth flew to Paris for three fittings, and eventually the dress was sent to Gibraltar in two giant wardrobe-size boxes complete with its own mannequin!
Not forgetting the mother of the bride, Galliano also produced a beautiful creation for his sister Rosemarie. The deep-red, kneelength dress with a hand-embroidered rose detail was also created in the designer’s Paris atelier and delivered to Dior’s flagship store in Sloane Street, London, where the mother of the bride was invited to choose the handbag and shoes of her desire, courtesy of her little brother John! The relationship with the designer and his family is clearly a deeply respectful and loving one. “He is always generous to his family,” says his goddaughter. And they are in contact with each other as much as possible, given how busy he is. This is not the first dress Galliano has made for her; in fact, her first communion dress was also created for her by her uncle – and, in the past, that dress has been loaned to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London as part of an exhibition. The guest list at the wedding included fellow doctors and army officers from all over the world who flew over especially for the wedding. The wedding ceremony, which was presided over by Monsignor Paul Bear, was followed by a solo rendition of William Gomez’s Ave Maria, sung by Gibraltarian singer Andrea Martin. A guard of honour awaited them at the doors of the cathedral – comprised of officers of the 40th Regiment Royal Artillery. The Royal Gibraltar Regiment had generously loaned the swords for the guard of honour, which ended the wedding service in such style. The wedding had been over a year in the making, with the assistance of Gibraltar wedding and event planners Hour Weddings. With over three years’ experience helping couples get married in Gibraltar and Spain, Hour Weddings’ owner, Monica Coumbe, has served as the main contact point for the UK-based couple, ensuring that all the elements of this wedding were in place. The groom, Oliver, was equally resplendent in full ceremonial military attire – a navy blue uniform, white gloves, red sash and sword. Thrilled with their decision to hold their wedding in a place that meant so much to her family and which has such a great military history, the couple said of Gibraltar, “It ticked all the boxes for us!” Later, they honeymooned in Morocco. And the dress? Well, that will be packed away in its box for now, and one day you may see it at an exhibition somewhere in the world! EVERLASTING LOVE Wedding photographer Jeremy Standley shares his memories of an intensely emotional Gibraltar wedding TAMMY AND CAMERON
W
here to begin? The amazing story of Tammy and Cameron. I could go on for pages but I will try to tell a little part of their story. On 25 July 1956 the SS Andrea Doria collided with the eastward-bound MS Stockholm of the Swedish American Line in what became one of history's most infamous maritime disasters: 1,660 passengers and crew were rescued and survived, while 46 people died as a consequence of the collision. The evacuated luxury liner capsized and sank the following morning. Sadly, Cameron’s parents were among the 46 that died on the SS Andrea Doria after boarding the vessel in Gibraltar. Tammy contacted me from LA a few months ago and we jumped at the chance to try to tell what was a very moving story. The ceremony took place at Mons Calpe, and we all arrived in one piece as for the first time I was chauffeur! You might also notice Cameron is not big on heights or monkeys. After the ceremony we drove down to Europa Point where Cameron threw the bouquet in memory of his parents, which was an incredibly touching moment. Romance is key, so expect lots of scattered petals in soft arrangements rather than structured and organised.” “Fake cakes are becoming more popular because they are a great way of saving money without scrimping on style. Many people want a four or five-tier cake, yet only need a three-tier to feed all of their guests. If you build in a fake tier, you can still get the height that you are after without the extra cost. Other pros are that fake cakes can make life a little easier for the catering staff. After the couple have cut the first slice, the cake can be wheeled into the kitchen and the precut cake can then be brought straight out again. On a final note, the bride can take home the upper layer as a memento.” “Cake jewellery is a great way to personalise your cake. You can add brooches such as a family heirloom, maybe something that has been passed from grandmother to mother to daughter. A great way to do this is to attach them to a big satin bow made from a sash of the wedding dress. We do not put jewels directly onto the cake as this could be a hazard for children. However, sugar jewels are available that look like crystals.” “My wedding day began with a beautiful afternoon tea reception and, as well as the delicious vanilla and wild blueberry wedding cake, guests enjoyed a selection of luscious lemon cup cakes decorated with dainty lily of the valley and hydrangea blossoms, reflecting the flowers in my bouquet. To complete the romantic look, vanilla butterfly biscuits in white birdcages added a touch of vintage glamour as they were displayed amongst crystal candelabras on each table.” “If you are using fresh flowers on your cake it is best to have your florist liaise with your cake team. This way you can make
sure that they match perfectly with the reception flowers. 1. After washing hair in my C Curls Shampoo, apply a few drops of my Base Coat Serum, then blow-dry hair using a big round brush; to get volume and extra root lift pull hair straight up while drying. Once dry, spray the hair with heat
protection spray; do this section by section for equal coverage. I would recommend Lee Stafford’s heat protection spray. 2. To get the curls you need to set the hair into heated rollers. (Make sure your hair is brushed with no knots in it before starting.) Sectioning your fringe off from the rest of your hair, set rollers in vertically on each side of your parting; you want to wrap hair around the rollers so it goes up, around and away from your face.
3. For the rest of the hair, think of it like brick-laying. You don’t want to put them directly on top of or next to each other; arrange them so they are scattered, varying the amount of hair used slightly. This will make the curls blend into a natural look. Leave your rollers in while you do your make-up and get ready! (Leave for a minimum 15 minutes.) 4. Take the rollers out, and with a vent brush comb all the way through the hair; this will create
your shape. If you have fine hair and need extra root lift, gently tease the roots with a tail comb for volume. 5. Once you have styled it into place, get a nice hair clip to keep the fringe off your face. This look is not meant to have lots of movement so, once it is styled and in place, spray with a regular/firm hold hairspray.

s the mother of the bride or the groom you too will be on show. It's not unusual to find that the make-up which looked great in your 20s, 30s and even early 40s is now not quite as flattering as you would like it to be. But there's no need for despair: there are some fantastic products on the market formulated especially for the more mature woman. Let's start at the beginning with priming the skin. Primers are the big buzzword at the moment. These are used under the foundation or moisturiser to smooth, firm and plump up the skin, like a mini face-lift without the knife. Primers can also help keep make-up on longer and stop eye shadow from creasing. Perfect for those long wedding days and nights. Now on to foundations… here the world truly is your oyster. You may have noticed that your skin isn't looking as flawless as you might like. It may be slightly dryer and uneven in colour, and the fine lines aren't quite so fine. Fear not: the past couple of years have seen some sensational developments in foundations to address these

problems. The new foundations are not only lightweight and sheer yet covering but also contain lightreflecting properties to make the skin look glowing, dewy and more youthful. It does this by reflecting light away from the lines, making
YUMMY MUMMY Make-up for the mother-of-the bride them appear less visible. Always test for the right colour on your jaw line; the one that disappears is the right one. After applying foundation you are now ready for concealer. By applying concealer in this way you need less and it looks more natural. Here too there are new wonderful concealers which are sheer and lightweight yet covering but, best of all, won't accentuate those fine lines. The type of texture to look for is one which is creamy yet matte so you needn't use powder under the eyes. If it is too creamy it will settle into the fine lines, making them look worse. Yellow-toned concealers will hide dark circles without looking ashy. Steer clear of light-
reflecting concealers under the eyes – in photos you will have big white patches under your eyes. Leave powder until the end; you may not need any, as it can be ageing. Or you could try one of the many shine-absorbing sheets. These get rid of shine without powder. If you are going through the change you may find a cream to powder foundation works the best.
Quick tips 1.
Use a light-reflecting or firming foundation that matches your skin tone, to soften the fine lines. 2. Use a lightweight concealer after the foundation. 3. Avoid too much powder as it is very ageing; instead use a light-reflecting one, a powder gel/cream or shineabsorbing papers. 4. Give up the brown shadows in favour of plums, charcoals and navy. 5. Don’t forget the eyebrows. 6. Cheeks should be blushed with soft apricot, peach and rosy hues, to give a youthful appearance. 7. A lip base will stop lip colour from feathering and help it stay on longer. 8. Use a nude/lip coloured lip pencil to avoid clown’s mouth. 9. Avoid drab, dull and too matte colours. It’s A Woman’s World Becky Sharpe is a creative photographer and filmmaker. Her style is unique, just like the stars of the show: the bride and groom! Describe your career highlights? Maybe it is strange to think of Becky Sharpe Photo + Cinema as having roots all the way back to my childhood, but I was always destined to create films and take photographs, even as a child. My mum was a photojournalist and loved making cine films; in fact, my first starring role in a film was when I was eight (Queen of Tarts). From then on I was always making films and taking pictures. My first serious personal exhibition was for my degree show at Exeter University. It was a combination of film and photography and I gained a double first class degree. Following a masters at Central Saint Martins I went on to make many film productions and collaborate in photographic exhibitions. I trained on BBC material and directed for television. I decided to move to Spain nine years ago when I had my first child. It wasn’t long before I began to work with fellow wedding professionals and be commissioned by couples getting married here. I am lucky to live in such a wonderful place and to create beautiful things for people who will treasure these films and images forever.

What do you most love about your job? It’s incredible being a woman working in a woman’s world and I love it when a bride becomes a friend. I am still amazed when a prospective client calls to tell me she has just found my website and was moved to tears and she just had to pick up the phone. I love this because I know that this bride will be even more moved when it is her own family, her own day, her own husband. What makes Becky Sharpe Photo + Cinema unique? As a film-maker and a photographer with a great team, I am lucky enough to be able to provide both photography and cinema to my clients. One of the main benefits of this is that you know that the team will always work really well together. It comes naturally to me as I have been working in this field since I was a teenager and it is my aim to make my clients very, very happy.
Describe your photography and cinematography style… As a creative visual artist with a fine art background, it is in my nature to create artistic work, and yet my priority is to make the bride and her party look as beautiful as possible. Art for art’s sake doesn’t do it for me. Gorgeous and glamorous are what rock my world. I heart Photoshop for being a girl’s best friend. What is the benefit of having a female photographer? There are benefits to having a girlie vibe on your wedding morning, but actually you want to choose your photographer based on how much you love their pictures and the personal connection on your first meeting. How would you describe your approach? I think it is important for couples to have fun with me and I like to meet up and get to know them first in order to create a chemistry. After all, photography is not really about cameras – it is about people.

Apparently the hubbie and I went down a storm with Confeti readers and we have been asked back by popular demand. Not a moment too soon, may I add. The wedding may be well and truly over but the arguments are far from finished. This week we have been returning unwanted wedding gifts… oh the stress of it all. Can I help it if his mother bought us a crocheted toilet roll holder! So reviewing another spa was just what we needed before we murdered each other. Our destination was Finca Cortesín, a truly magnificent development situated between Marbella and Sotogrande. We were impressed from the outset; everything combines so well here – the service, the décor, the food, the facilities. 70

The hotel is home to one of the best spas in the region – offering heated and double-cushioned massage beds, a snow cave and
three thermal zones. The indoor and outdoor pools are magnificent, both lined with beautiful blue-green mosaic tiles. Starting off in the thermal areas, we enjoyed a session in the steam room, followed by a quick dip in the plunge pool. I actually thought my husband was going to have a heart attack, he screamed so loudly. We then moved on to the sauna, finishing off in the snow cave –

Mediterranean magic Looking back at Laura and Fred’s Andalucian wedding at Puente Romano – by Reviva Weddings Our Vision We always wanted to choose Spain for our dream day, as we had fallen in love with the sundrenched, beautiful white villages nestling in the Andalucian countryside. Both our parents have homes in Andalucía, so it just felt right. It was also the

perfect place for the relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere we desired for our intimate wedding, with close friends and family. The Puente Romano Hotel was just the ideal venue for our wedding – its charming whitewashed architecture, with interesting courtyards and patios,
geranium-clad walls, terracotta tiles and beautiful, established gardens really reminded us of the Andalucian white villages we love. What’s more, the five-star luxury and attentive service gave us the quality that we wanted too. La Virginia church was a wonderful setting for the blessing; it’s a hidden gem that not many people know about. It nestles in a small, pueblo-blanco style village setting in Marbella. It really charmed us when we first saw it and we couldn't believe we had found such a pretty and tranquil setting just five minutes from the centre of Marbella. The chapel can be used by any denomination. With Laura of Reviva Weddings finding and securing these two
venues, we knew we would have the perfect Andalucian-style wedding we had dreamed of.
Our Style Continuing our theme of the Mediterranean, we wanted to include the fabulous vibrant pink bougainvillea colour, yet keep the style simple and elegant. My mother was giving me away so we
chose fuchsia for her dress and the rest of the décor followed this scheme. We chose fuchsia chair sashes and tall white hydrangea arrangements with a sprinkling of bright pink orchids resembling butterflies, and the tables were scattered with bright pink bougainvillea petals to complete the look. I fell in love with the fabulous phalaenopsis orchids and immediately knew I wanted these for my bouquet. My dress, called “Annabelle”, was from Fleur Bridal in London, designed by the US designer Lea Ann Belter. I opted for a full-length veil scattered with tiny little crystals. I accessorised the dress with a crystal belt for the evening to give it even more of a glamorous party feel, whilst my shoes were decorated with little crystals from Rainbow. I wanted to continue with the subtle Spanish feel and echoed the lace of my dress into our décor theme by choosing filigree “favour boxes” from the Reviva Weddings’ shop, filled with love hearts for our guests.

Our Treasured Moment We loved the whole day but the highlights had to be exchanging vows in La Virginia chapel (we had a Swedish priest called Mattias Anderson as Fred is Swedish); the speeches; the amazing food; and the non-stop dancing until the early hours! Our

flowers and décor were beautiful and drew a lot of positive comments from our guests. We also really enjoyed seeing all our guests wearing such colourful outfits, which looked perfect in the bright Spanish sun. Carla, our wedding coordinator, from Reviva Weddings, was fantastic. We had booked her to oversee our day, and our only regret was not having her from day one!

Who wouldn’t want to re-create this idyllic, picturesque scene for their wedding album? We are lucky to have some of Spain’s finest wedding photographers based on the Costa del Sol creating breathtaking beach photography year upon year. David Toms, Gary Tapp Jeremy Standley and Piers Richardson share with us their top tips and advice on capturing the ideal beach photographs for a wedding. Jeremy Standley “One of the real tricks to great beach pictures is communicating with your photographer and making sure they and you understand what is and what isn’t possible. The quality of the light will always dictate the quality of the images, so make sure if you want winning beach images you are aware of what realistically can be achieved. Another great way to enjoy the best of both worlds is to incorporate some into your e-session (engagement photo shoot).”

David Toms “Time is of the essence; the newlyweds will want to be spending time with their guests rather than two hours on the beach with me. Beach photographs should be taken two days after the wedding; this way there are no guests to worry about and they will have recovered from the wedding. Nobody wants to look tired in their wedding photos. I am a romantic and believe that, to optimise the beautiful light, beach shots should be taken just before the sun sets. Many photographers won’t want to do this, because if sand gets into the lens the camera is ruined. I don’t mind – I am committed to getting the best shot possible and I will even get in the sea to ensure this!”
Gary Tapp “The majority of weddings I shoot are couples who have come over from the UK or Ireland. They prefer to come down to southern Spain as the weather is much better and it is more reliable for their big day. The beach shots are a big part of their wedding photography as they offer something more exotic than “back home”. I usually hold back the beach shots until the end of the day, particularly when the sun is setting, as this is when the light is at its best. During the afternoon, it is far too hot and the direct sunlight from above is too harsh, creating unattractive contrast in shadows and highlights. The light towards the end of the day is much more beautiful, and the backdrop of palm trees ands lovely blue, turquoise and purple colours with the sea on the horizon cannot be matched anywhere else.”

Cosmetic surgeon Dr Kaye replies: Pigmentation of facial skin caused by sun and/or hormonal changes can be very tricky to treat, especially when quick results are wanted. I would recommend a first attempt with a special bleaching gel based on hydroquinone and ascorbic acid (prescribed by your plastic surgeon/dermatologist). This gel needs to be applied once at night and total sun block must be applied during the day, because the skin is very sensitive during the treatment. After a treatment time of two to three months we have seen very good results in many cases, up to a complete disappearance in some cases. If the pigmentation persists, other more invasive procedures are needed: for example, a medium-deep skin peel or a laser dermabrasion. Those treatments need at least one week of skin healing time and leave the skin with redness for two to three months, so this is not a quick fix treatment before your wedding, and it should be done in winter. 84

Wedding planner Kerry Vear-Smyth replies: Rehearsals vary greatly from church to church and also depend on whether you are having a Catholic wedding or blessing. These are the churches that we work with on a regular basis: El Salvador, Nerja – the priest normally goes through the Mass Booklet and we attend to go through the entrance, exit and any other concerns of the congregation. It takes around 10 to 15 minutes and is very relaxed. Due to a very heavy workload he normally sets the date and time around a week to 10 days before the wedding. Father Andres does not normally work on Thursdays so rehearsals are rarely on this day. San Antonion de Padua, Frigiliana/Maro – generally no rehearsal.
I'm Catholic and getting married next year on the Costa del Sol. Is there a priest who can perform the ceremony in English and, if so, who do you suggest? Also, must shoulders be covered in churches in Spain? Fiona MacDonagh, 35, Belfast
Cristo Resucitado, Torremolinos – Father Juan likes to meet the couple and go through the Mass Booklet. It is very brief and normally with just the couple. Virgin del Carmen, Benalmadena Costa – no rehearsal. Santo Domingo, Benalmadena Pueblo – no rehearsal. Santo Cristo/Encarnación, Marbella – detailed rehearsal with Franz the day before the wedding with full bridal party. Calvario, Marbella – full meeting with priest for rehearsal and discussion (up to an hour). San Pedro – no rehearsal. If we have arranged for the priest to come from Fuengirola to do the wedding then generally he meets the couple in Fuengirola before the wedding and goes through the Mass Booklet. It is not a formal rehearsal. If you are having a blessing, it entirely depends upon the minister. Some do have a rehearsal and some do not. You would need to check with the minister conducting the ceremony.
Wedding planner Sue Danker replies: We could arrange an Englishspeaking priest to come from an outside parish. We would need the date, time and location of your wedding. Some parish priests don’t like priests coming from other parishes unless they are personal friends of the family so we really need to know which parish you are booked with.
This will also incur an extra cost on top of your usual church donation and you may also have to pay for the priest’s transport. Some parishes require that the bride and bridal party cover their shoulders but in general guests are not required to cover their shoulders.

So you’ve managed to get the wedding and the reception out of the way, and have driven off in your convertible with “Just Married” painted on the back. But, if you thought that all the tension and drama of the day was over, you’d be wrong as you have one more wedding tradition to, ahem, overcome: The Wedding Night. am, of course, assuming that you are spending your first night of wedded bliss away from the rest of the guests and not planning a wedding breakfast the following morning. I’d recommend not throwing a
wedding breakfast for several reasons. The first one is that weddings tend to get the pulses racing among the younger guests and you’ll find a fair few of them waking up in “unfamiliar” rooms. This can lead to embarrassed silences between
ushers and bridesmaids across the scrambled eggs the following morning. The most embarrassing wedding breakfast that I can recall vividly – and you’ll understand why in a second – was when the bride’s mother, who had a bit of a “turn”,

To say that the bride’s father took it stoically would be an understatement, though we did keep the gun cabinet locked for several days afterwards. In older, more innocent times of course, the wedding night was indeed special as it was the first time a couple would have sex with each other. Over time, however, the importance of premarital virginity has waned considerably and these days it’s quite rare for a newly married couple to be engaging in their first act of sexual intercourse on their wedding night. Especially if they first met in Lineker’s. That doesn’t mean, however, that the wedding night shouldn’t still be special. Even if the groom doesn’t place much importance on that first time as a married couple, the chances are that the bride does, so if you want to live happily ever after you should make a serious effort to make it memorable for both of you. It will also set the precedent for your future sex life as husband and wife. So, as I slip into something more comfortable, dim the lights and gently slide the Anita Baker compilation into the CD player, dear reader, here are some suggestions for making your first night of wedded bliss one to remember. You’ve already enjoyed each other carnally, but you can still try to create the kind of anticipation that isn’t normally present in your everyday sex life for this special occasion. For a period of time before the wedding, ban all sexual contact so that your desire for each other will build up until the wedding
night. The basic formula is to hold out for twice as long as you normally would. If you are a fewtimes-a-week couple, a weeklong sex ban should be sufficient, but if you tend to do it only once every other week you might want to keep up the no sex rule for as long as a month before you say “I do”. To increase the expectation even more, add a “no nudity in each other’s presence” clause to your sex-ban agreement. Though my long-suffering girlfriend has already introduced that last one around our flat already. Let’s just say that I’m not at my best first thing in the morning… You may already be living together before your nuptials, but in order to make your wedding night special you should spend it somewhere other than home. Put yourself in unfamiliar surroundings by booking a nice hotel room for the night. If you have some room left in the wedding budget, why not splash out for the honeymoon suite? That’s what it’s there for. Though you might be advised to stay clear of the Scarface Suite at the Sisu Boutique Hotel as that could send out the all the wrong sorts of messages to your beloved as to where you see the marriage heading. And, once you’ve got the room, make sure that it’s been prepped with candles, petals, champagne, etc… Try not to get plastered. One of the vital parts of a reception for many couples is the booze, but if you are stumbling around, throwing up in the flowerbeds and singing football songs then you’re not really going to be in the mood for love later. Unless, of course, you first met in Lineker’s (see above). The other challenge that you’ll face on your wedding night will be the bridal gown itself.
Chances are your blushing bride is going to be dressed in an elaborate and difficult-to-get-into gown on your wedding night. She needs at least two bridesmaids to hold it up while she goes to the bathroom, so getting it over her head once you make it to the bedroom could be a challenge. But, rather than attacking said garment as if it were a fiendishly difficult puzzle from The Krypton Factor, make taking her dress off part of your foreplay instead of letting her struggle with it on her own. Don’t get frustrated with the various buttons, bows and fasteners and swear oaths invoking the spirit of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Take your time and make it fun. No matter how bad your wedding night is, it can’t be
worse than the American bride and groom who were both tasered by police and spent their wedding night in jail. It started when a guest launched a metal lamp through a plate glass window. The gallery owner (the reception was in an art gallery) called the police, but when the police arrived the groom protested, yelling "What are you doing? This is my wedding! You're making my wife cry!" The newlywed moved towards the policemen and his wife lunged in to help and the cops stungunned both into submission and toted them off to an overnight holding pen. And it doesn't stop there: two nights later, man and wife were tasered again, by police responding to a noise complaint!

Hippies to Hip Hop AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN… IBIZA By Nicola McGeorge For this issue Confeti decided to review a short-haul honeymoon destination. We chose historic Ibiza, a cultural melting pot, where hedonists and hippies live harmoniously together. Our trip took my partner, Mr C, and me from north to south, where the quiet and unchanging environment of the countryside contrasts greatly with the bustling towns. We then continued from east to west, discovering more of Ibiza's authentic nature. The legendary “white island” is so much more than a clubbing destination, proving it is possible to enjoy Ibiza without seeing or even hearing a nightclub.

MUST SEE Las Dalias – the famous hippy market After much umming and ahhing we opted for Las Dalias evening market, situated in San Carlos. It is a smaller, more relaxed version of the classic Saturday market, which can attract up to 20,000 visitors in a day. On the drive down from our hotel I was jumping around with excitement, putting plaits and flowers in my hair, while my other half kept mumbling about incense candles and tofu burgers. How wrong he was! In fact, it turned out to be our favourite Ibiza experience. The stalls offer hand-made clothing and crafts, many of which have been produced by the stall owners’ bare hands. The atmosphere is buzzing. We enjoyed the live music in acoustic form, clowns, demonstrations and even the odd didgeridoo performance. As for the restaurant, it is set up under the vines of the garden, allowing you to eat under the stars. Our meal (there wasn’t a tofu burger in sight) was deliciously fresh and bursting with exotic flavours, and went straight to the top of our list. All in all Las Dalias is much more than a market: it’s a spiritual experience. lasdalias.es

Cova de Can Marçà A few miles north of the village of Sant Miquel you will find a 100,000 year-old cave which was originally discovered by smugglers. We arrived in the midday sun only to be told we had to wait 45 minutes for the next tour, so do confirm tour times beforehand. Also, wear comfy shoes as there are a lot of steps to walk down. How was the experience? I do think the caves have been too commercialised; however, it is worth the visit for the panoramic view over the whole of the bay of the Puerto San Miguel and, of course, the stalactites. covadecanmarsa.com

As you stroll beneath a luscious canopy of bamboo, past watchful carved stone statues, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve just landed in Goa – not an Asian fusion restaurant in the outback of a Mediterranean isle. The eccentric owner John Moon has lovingly created a temple to host private events, monumental parties and everything in between. Trendy and very popular, the food here is guaranteed to tantalise your taste buds and I can, hand on my heart, say that their Thai green chicken curry is the best I have ever tasted – and don’t even get me started on the “Multiple Orgasm” dessert. Yes, try ordering that and keeping a straight face. After dinner we went to explore the other rooms – you can indulge in retail therapy at the Sasha Moon Boutique, sip cocktails amidst ancient erotic artefacts or get some very helpful advice in the Tantra Boutique! This place is not for the faint-hearted and I would advise against taking your granny to Bambuddha, yet as we were leaving I noticed a few bopping away on the dance floor. Our first stop was Evissa (Ibiza Town). It took us nearly an hour to find our hotel, The Mirador de Dalt Vila, as we hadn’t printed out any directions. Mr C blamed me, naturally. Eventually, after much arguing and going round in circles (I spent this time noting down where all the fabulous shops were), we eventually found the security barrier. Do remember to bring your hotel confirmation; otherwise, like us, you will spend half an hour engaged in sign language with the security guard. Anyway we finally found it and what a sight for sore eyes. Situated in a privileged position within the ancient walls of Ibiza's World Heritage site of Dalt Vila, the Hotel Mirador enjoys magnificent views of the old town, the harbour and the Mediterranean sea beyond. The building dates back to 1905 and has been left intact as a town mansion. There are only 13 rooms in this stylish hotel, which have all been designed with exclusiveness and sophistication in mind. Guests have a choice of junior suites, superior or standard double rooms and singles All its areas are decorated with details that combine noble materials with first-class functional elements that ensure you an unforgettable stay. Our stay was calm and comfortable – I thoroughly enjoyed choosing between a range of pillows and complimentary toiletries, and lounging in soft bathrobes after

a relaxing jacuzzi bath. The hotel offers a refreshing and genuinely warm, professional five-star service with great touches such as complimentary transfers to the beaches and little desserts left daily in the fridge. Mr C ate both of ours… humph. The staff are a real pleasure and make this hotel worth the prices you pay. When Mr C developed chronic toothache, reception not only recommended a dentist but booked him in for an emergency appointment. Breakfast and lunch were served on the outdoor terrace. The food was outstanding and the waiting staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Exceptional service is definitely Dalt Vila’s most distinguishing characteristic. In the evening we ventured down the steep cobbled streets (make sure you visit the cathedral and castle and, for goodness sake, wear sensible shoes and not your latest YSL tributes as I did), only for me to drag my other half into every boutique. Ladies, take mucho dinero for shopping; the clothes are incredible and many are oneoffs. There are also many firstclass restaurants in Dalt Vila. Onwards and upwards, as they say. Our next review took us to the north-east of the island. Located on a seven-hectare coastal plot, Hotel Hacienda Na Xamena sits 180 metres above sea level on a two-kilometre stretch of coast amidst a Mediterranean pine forest. This area is one of the last unspoiled ecological environments on the European map, and is at the heart of a nature reserve which is home to some exceptional flora and fauna. Everything from the rooms to the restaurants is angled to the breathtaking view over the bay way below. We arrived to find that our room was not yet ready. As I was already rather peckish we took up the receptionist’s recommendation of having a bite to eat by the poolside while we waited. My, my… the view really does take your breath way. The emerald green sea flecked by the white of breaking waves, wild cliff faces and the total immersion in natural beauty. We sat sipping on

pina coladas, gazing out to sea without a care in the world, and felt our stresses melt away. The hotel itself is an intimate combination of traditional architecture and Arabic décor. If you are not the type that likes to spend your whole trip within the hotels grounds then, again, I must recommend hiring a car as you cannot really walk to the nearest amenities. Although we were not going to actually hit the clubs, we couldn’t visit Ibiza without staying in one of its legendary party hotels. Mr C was totally up for this, but after much pleading I managed to convince him that one night, not three would be enough. I am rather sound-sensitive and need my beauty sleep. Having ruled out San Antonio (thank goodness, we drove through there at two in the afternoon only to witness what looked like a mass zombie invasion of teens who obviously hadn’t been to bed yet) we settled on Es Vive. We managed to park right outside, which is quite a feat in Ibiza Town. I was immediately impressed by the retro styling of the art deco façade. Es Vive is unmistakably hip and cool, surrounded by tropical palms swaying in the warm breeze. Once inside we were greeted with first-class, friendly service and shown to our room. Though not on the huge side, the bed was super-comfy, while the sleek bathrooms with oversized

showers came complete with luxurious Elemis products. I have to admit I was dreading going to the pool area, but how wrong I was. The food was superb, the music funky and not a drunken yob in sight. That evening we had dinner at Aura (another one to add to your to do list) and then returned to Es Vive to try out the über chic Experience Bar, an all-night-long den of glamour and excess, hidden in the heart of the hotel, where you can dance until dawn. The next morning we were up early, well early for me anyway, as we had a flight to catch. We headed down for breakfast – a fantastic spread, I might add. The pool looked immaculate; oh, except for the four male revellers passed out on the sun beds (who were well into their 40s) still in their swim shorts from the day before. TO BE OR NOT TO BE... The legalities of getting married in Spain When it comes to the legalities involved in getting married on the Costa del Sol, there is an enormous amount of misinformation spread on the internet, especially in wedding forums, so Confeti are happy to set the record straight on all things official when it comes to tying the knot. There are only two kinds of wedding that are legally recognised in Spain: a Catholic wedding or a civil wedding. Most other styles of ceremony are possible – Anglican, Jewish, Buddhist, Humanist, etc. – but must be backed up by a civil ceremony either back home or in nearby Gibraltar. The two most important points to remember are that there are no residency requirements for a Catholic wedding, but there are for a civil wedding. Hence most people who don’t want a Catholic ceremony opt for a blessing in the style and location of their choice, having already had a small civil ceremony beforehand. Catholic weddings For a legal ceremony to take place in one of the many stunning Catholic churches in the area, the process is as follows… The bride and groom must initiate the necessary paperwork in the parish of their residence. There they will be requested to provide certain supporting documents/information: official baptismal certificates, not older than six months, photocopies of birth certificates, certificate of a marriage guidance/preparation course, letter of freedom to marry in the Catholic church, parish, day and time of wedding. The couple’s local parish priest prepares the papers in English and sends them to his own Bishopric. They send them to the Bishopric in Málaga, either in English or Latin. The Bishopric in Málaga then translates everything into Spanish and finally sends the Spanish version to Marbella. Should one of the wedding couple not be Catholic, a dispensation has to be requested from their Bishopric. On the day of the wedding, the Spanish parish priest of the church where the wedding is taking place will issue the couple with a form that must be taken to the local Civil Registry during the week after the marriage. This can be done by the couple themselves or a friend/relative. Their International Marriage Certificate will be issued approximately one week later. Most wedding planners or church administrators will offer to do this service on behalf of the couple for a fee. Civil weddings At present, the minimum residency requirement for a civil wedding is two years. There is a lot of paperwork involved and the process can take up to six months to
complete. Many couples opt to do this instead in Gibraltar, which is a far simpler and shorter process. In Gibraltar In order to get married in Gibraltar, you must be able to satisfy the Registrar that you are free to marry. This may be done by obtaining a single status certificate or a certificate of no impediment from the authorities of your country of origin or normal residence. You must, in addition, provide your passport and birth certificate (national identity card in the case of EU nationals). The Registrar, at his discretion, may ask you to produce other documents. For example, if you are a non-EEA national, possibly your residence document. If you have been divorced, you will also need to provide your former marriage certificate and your divorce certificate. The paperwork can be presented in person between three months and one day before the ceremony. You will then make an appointment with the marriage registry for the civil ceremony. Jewish weddings It is possible to hold a Jewish blessing, but it must be backed up by a civil ceremony. There are several local synagogues in the area with rabbis who are willing to hold a Jewish-style ceremony. (See this issue’s article on holding a Jewish wedding in Spain.) Other ceremonies Many couples come from mixed religious and spiritual backgrounds. There are several Anglican priests in the area who can perform a Church of England blessing. Some officiants can combine texts and symbolism from different religions and traditions within the same ceremony. Some couples feel strongly that they would like a completely nonreligious ceremony, in which case a Humanist ceremony might be the preferred option. Gay weddings Same-sex marriage was legalised in Spain in 2005. Just as a civil ceremony for heterosexual couples, the same residency requirements apply. Again, many local officiants are happy to provide a same-sex blessing ceremony.
