Welcome Welcome

Message from the President and SITC 2020 Annual Program Committee Chair Welcome to the fully virtual 35th Anniversary Annual Meeting of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC 2020). In this meeting we celebrate the society’s commitment over the last 35 years to making cancer immunotherapy a standard of care and the word “cure” a reality. With this new virtual format, the only viable way we can connect the global SITC family during the pandemic, SITC 2020 programming will be accessible in real-time to our colleagues around the world. We hope you take full advantage of this unique opportunity and participate in special anniversary programming, key educational sessions and presentations from leaders in the field. The meeting platform will feature live Q&A, enable you to chat with poster presenters, engage with industry representatives in the virtual exhibit hall and to connect with fellow attendees in the online networking rooms.

SITC 2020 will celebrate the remarkable progress of our field and lay the stage for a successful future.

Presentations at this Anniversary Annual Meeting will summarize and integrate the most recent advances in tumor immunology and cancer immunotherapy. We will hear data from cutting-edge clinical trials, and from lab-based basic and translational research focused on identifying targets for therapeutic intervention. Updates on major national and international initiatives coming from academia, government and industry, and information on important society projects will be disseminated throughout the meeting.

We also want to direct your attention to our Pre-Conference Programs, held Nov. 9–10. The Primer on Tumor Immunology and Cancer ImmunotherapyTM is updated yearly and covers the basics to the latest in our rapidly expanding field for attendees at all levels. The other Scientific Programs will address immune checkpoint inhibitor resistance and the many cellular therapy approaches being applied for the treatment of cancer. Finally, a grants workshop will help investigators identify factors that determine the success or failure of a grant proposal and will provide approaches to optimize the process of proposal development, preparation and revision.

SITC 2020 will feature several keynote presentations delivered by investigators whose work opened new areas of investigation and transformed our field. Elizabeth M. Jaffee, MD (Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins), will deliver her keynote address titled, Turning Immunologically Quiescent Tumors into Immune Responsive Cancers. Commemorating our society’s 35th anniversary, Helen E. Heslop, MD (Baylor College of Medicine), will describe the current state of T-cell Therapy of Cancer in her keynote address. We would like to thank this year’s keynote speakers for sharing their expertise with SITC 2020 attendees and for their continued contributions in the field. Our Anniversary Annual Meeting will also include a special session presented by James P. Allison, PhD (The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center), and John Wherry, PhD (University of Pennsylvania), titled, Mechanistic Understandings and Misunderstandings.

In celebration of our society’s anniversary, we honor not one, but three researchers whose contributions to the area of immune checkpoint inhibitors fundamentally changed the treatment of cancer. We offer a special congratulations to Lieping Chen, MD, PhD (Yale School of Medicine), Gordon Freeman, MD, PhD (Dana-Farber Cancer Institute), and Arlene Sharpe, MD, PhD (Harvard Medical School), recipients of the Richard V. Smalley, MD, Memorial Award and Lectureship, our society’s highest award.

This year, the Hot Topic Symposium will focus on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on treatment of cancer patients with immunotherapy and on lessons from cancer immunotherapy and immunology that can be applied to the management of COVID-19 infection. Several SITC members have already dedicated their insight and efforts to fighting this pandemic. This special session will highlight progress to date and disseminate new knowledge to the wider medical community.

Lastly, we would like to extend a thank you to the numerous individuals, serving as organizers and faculty for the 35th Anniversary Annual Meeting & Pre-Conference Programs, for volunteering your time and many talents. Target Audience

Program Purpose

The target audience for this program includes researchers from academia and industry involved in basic, translational and clinical cancer research, as well as clinicians and those from regulatory and funding agencies.

While many patients with cancer are experiencing significant long-term benefits from immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), the vast majority exhibit either primary or secondary (acquired) resistance to these therapies. The underlying mechanisms for the wide range of responses are not well understood. Before ICI resistant/relapsed patients can be properly managed, however, these underlying causes need to be elucidated, which will enable rational design of therapeutic options based on these mechanisms of resistance. Testing of therapies in this ICI-resistant population also presents unique questions, including defining resistance and proper clinical trial design strategies.

Addressing the problem of ICI resistance and failure therefore will require collaboration between researchers and clinicians involved in all aspects of cancer research and practice, including basic, translational, and clinical areas. This program will feature both invited faculty presentations by experts in the field, as well as abstract presentations from researchers, who will apply for consideration for oral presentation. These presentations will be interspersed throughout the program.

Session topics will include defining immune checkpoint inhibitor resistance, primary resistance, secondary/acquired resistance, and therapeutic strategies for patients with resistant disease. This workshop will bring together all stakeholders to address ICI resistance and failure, in order to move the field forward and continue advancing patient care.

Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: • Describe patterns of both primary and acquired resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitors • Summarize current understanding of biological mechanisms of immune checkpoint inhibitor resistance • Outline rational therapeutic strategies for patients with immune checkpoint inhibitor-resistant disease

Kald Abdallah, MD, PhD, is Vice-President and Head of World Wide Medical – Oncology at Bristol Myers Squibb.

Jennifer Gansert MD, PhD, is Executive Medical Director at Amgen where she has served for 15 years in the area of late stage Global Clinical Development.

Dr. Kald attended Sao Paulo University where he received his PhD in immunology and solid organ transplantation, researching the impact of immunosuppression on mineral metabolism. His research fellowship at Harvard Medical School – Brigham and Women’s Hospital focused on the role of costimulatory molecules on T cell activation in several different models.

After his fellowship, Dr. Kald joined Sao Paulo University and shifted his research focus towards immunotherapy of cancer, leading a clinical program with naked DNA vaccines in Head and Neck Cancer.

Coming from Academia and clinical practice, Dr. Kald joined pharma and has been working mostly in immune-oncology for more than a decade, being involved in the R&D of several molecules. Of notice, he led the medical affairs team behind the launch of Ipilimumab. FasterCures also publicly recognized him on the “Innovator Spotlight” due to the role played during the launch of Project Data Sphere, a role for which he received a certificate of recognition in appreciation for outstanding commitment by U.S. President George H. W. Bush, Founder of the CEO Roundtable on Cancer.

Edward Cha, MD, PhD Genentech Edward Cha, MD, PhD, is the Global Development Leader for Tecentriq in GI cancers and Senior Medical Director in Product Development Oncology at Genentech, South San Francisco. He leads the clinical development for Tecentriq and combination therapies in multiple GI cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma, gastroesophageal, pancreatic and colorectal cancers. His additional areas of focus are the development of novel combinations, innovative clinical study designs and clinical collaborations. He is the medical lead for the Morpheus combinations platform, a series of clinical studies exploring combination therapies in oncology.

Dr. Gansert’s experience includes contributing to global development plans in both the Oncology and Hematology space including, monoclonal antibodies, oncolytic viruses, small molecules and bispecific T-cell engagers. Passion for immunology started during senior year at the University of Chicago and carried over to medical school at SUNY Stonybrook, then on to UCLA where she received her clinical training in Internal Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, and PhD training in Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics.

Motivating factors include working with talented physicians and scientists both inside and outside of industry, learning more about global regulatory science that can help us get the best therapeutics to patients and being involved with a society like SITC where we can work together to advance knowledge and patient care.

Israel Lowy, MD, PhD Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Israel (Izzy) Lowy, MD, PhD, joined Regeneron in 2010 as Vice President and serves as Senior Vice President, Translational Sciences and Oncology. He is a primary architect of Regeneron’s cancer immunotherapy program. Prior to joining Regeneron, Dr. Lowy was at Medarex for eight years.

Previously, Dr. Lowy was Assistant Professor of Medicine and Microbiology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is a licensed physician and has been board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

Dr. Lowy received his AB in Biochemical Sciences from Princeton University and his MD-PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from Columbia University.

Dr. Cha received his MD and PhD from Columbia University and an AB degree in Molecular Biology from Princeton University. Merck & Co., Inc. Eric Rubin, MD, is Senior Vice President and Therapeutic Area Head of Oncology Early Development at Merck Research Laboratories.

For over 25 years, Dr. Rubin’s focus has been on cancer drug development, initially as a faculty member at the DanaFarber Cancer Institute, then as a senior leader of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, where he served as the Director of the Investigational Therapeutics Division of that institution.

His research efforts focused on mechanisms of resistance to DNA topoisomerase-targeting drugs and his laboratory cloned TOPORS, a novel topoisomerase I- and p53-interacting tumor suppressor gene. In 2008, Merck recruited him to lead the clinical oncology development team. Under his leadership, the clinical oncology group underwent a transformational change in an effort to realize the potential of cancer immunotherapy. He led the initial development of the anti-PD-1 antibody pembrolizumab, which was the first anti-PD-1 therapy approved in the U.S., and in the identification of the significant activity of this breakthrough therapeutic across several cancer types. In 2014, Dr. Rubin was asked to head Oncology Early Development for Merck where he oversees development of a promising and expansive early pipeline, as well as translational oncology research activities.

Dr. Rubin has authored over 100 original, peer-reviewed publications and book chapters related to oncology translational research, clinical trials and drug development.

He has served frequently as a member of National Cancer Institute and American Cancer Society study sections, as well as on program committees for the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is a co-chair of the Cancer Steering Committee of the Biomarkers Consortium, Foundation of the National Institute of Health, a member of the Science Policy and Governmental Affairs Committee for AACR, and was a member of the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative/Blue Ribbon Panel Working Group on Expanding Clinical Trials.

Immunotherapy Resistance and Failure

Giovanni Melillo, MD, is Vice President, Head of Immuno-oncology, OBU Global Medical Affairs at AstraZeneca. He obtained a Medical Doctor degree and a specialty in Medical Oncology from the University of Naples Medical School, Italy. He was a post-doctoral fellow in the Laboratory of Experimental Immunology of the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland, USA from 1991 to 1996, and a Clinical Oncology Fellow at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH), from 1996 to 1999. Between 1999 and 2011, Dr. Melillo held the position of Senior Investigator, Head of the Tumor Hypoxia Laboratory, Developmental Therapeutics Program, National Cancer Institute in Frederick where he contributed to the implementation of a translational program for the discovery and development of small molecule inhibitors of Hypoxia Inducible Factor 1 and was an attending physician involved in the design and execution of phase I-II clinical trials in Oncology. From 2011 to 2013, Dr. Melillo was Medical Director, Exploratory Clinical and Translational Research at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton, NJ. In September of 2013 he joined AstraZeneca as Global Clinical Lead, Immuno-oncology - Global Medicines Development, where he first contributed to the design of the PACIFIC study in Stage III unresectable NSCLC and then led the Immuno-oncology Head & Neck clinical program. Dr. Melillo has served as Associate Editor of Cancer Research (2004-2012) and Journal of Molecular Medicine and as Editorial Board member of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, Cell Cycle, Molecular Cancer, and Cell Death and Disease.

He has published more than 100 papers between research articles, invited reviews and book chapters.

Program Purpose

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

CAR T treatments have led to improved outcomes for patients with hematologic malignancies. However, the same level of success has not been achieved in most solid tumors, and other immune cell types beyond T cells are also being explored preclinically and clinically. This workshop will therefore highlight the multitude of cellular therapy approaches being applied for the treatment of cancer, including many T cell strategies, alternative immune cells, practical considerations and novel technologies.

Workshop on Engineering Immune Cells for Cancer Therapy

Christine Brown, PhD, is the Heritage Provider Network Professor in Immunotherapy at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center.

As Deputy Director of the T Cell Therapeutics Research Laboratory (TCTRL), Dr. Brown provides scientific oversight for the translational research programs evaluating chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy for hematological and solid cancers. Dr. Brown’s research focuses on advancing CAR T cell therapy for the treatment of cancer, with an emphasis on brain tumors. Her efforts to develop glioblastoma-targeted CAR T cells, improve T cell manufacturing, and optimize routes of T cell delivery have led to the initiation of a first-in-human clinical trial evaluating IL13Ra2- and HER2-targeted CAR T cell therapy for the treatment of recurrent glioblastoma. This clinical experience is revealing important insights into the optimization of CAR T cells for the treatment of brain tumors.

Dr. Brown’s ongoing research efforts also aim to develop strategies to limit tumor antigen escape and to overcome the suppressive tumor microenvironment, critical challenges limiting the effectiveness of CAR T cell therapy for treatment of solid tumors.

Katy Rezvani, MD, PhD The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Katayoun Rezvani, MD, PhD, is Professor of Medicine, Director of Translational Research, Medical Director of the MD Anderson GMP and Cell Therapy Laboratory and Chief, Section of Cellular Therapy, Department of Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Therapy, MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Rezvani joined the faculty at the MDACC in 2012 from the Hammersmith Hospital in London, where she was Director of the allogeneic adult stem cell transplant program, Medical Director of the GMP facility and Director of the Transplant Immunology Research Laboratory. Dr. Rezvani has an active research laboratory program in transplantation immunology where the focus of her research group is to study the role of natural killer cells (NK) cells in mediating immunity against leukemia, and to understand the mechanisms of tumorinduced NK cell dysfunction. The goal of these studies is to develop strategies to enhance NK cell effector function against tumors by genetically engineering the cells to enhance their in vivo antileukemic activity and persistence.

Dr. Rezvani has extensive laboratory experience in higherorder flow cytometry, CyTOF, various molecular biology techniques and xenograft NSG mouse models of NK immunotherapy. Her laboratory program in transplant immunology has led to the approval and funding of a number of Phase I/II studies of immunotherapy in patients with leukemia and lymphoma.

Marco Ruella, MD University of Pennsylvania Marco Ruella, MD, is Clinical Instructor and Associate Director of Dr. Carl June’s laboratory. His research focus is on the mechanisms of relapse after chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CART) immunotherapies with goal of rationally design innovative combined immunotherapies for relapsing/refractory leukemia and lymphoma.

Dr. Ruella obtained his medical degree with high honors at the University of Torino, Italy, in 2007, and completed his specialization in clinical hematology in 2012. He worked as attending physician at the Hematology and Cell Therapy Division of the Mauriziano Hospital and was instructor at the Biotechnology School at the University of Torino. In 2012, he started his post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in the Center for Cellular immunotherapies, under the mentorship of Drs. Carl June and Saar Gill.

Dr. Ruella was the recipient of the inaugural SITC EMD-Serono Cancer Immunotherapy Clinical Fellowship Award (2014), the AACR-BMS Oncology Fellowship in Clinical Cancer Research (2015), the ASH Scholar Award (2016) and a NIH K99-R00 award (2017). He was also selected as ASH CRTI fellow in 2015 and ISCT/ASBMT CTTC scholar in 2015. Dr. Ruella is author of several peer-reviewed publications on targeted immunotherapies for hematological cancers and is inventor in five patents on CART therapy.

Curran, PhD The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Michael Curran, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Immunology at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, where his lab seeks to discover the underlying mechanisms of immune resistance in the “coldest” tumors, pancreatic and prostate adenocarcinoma and glioblastoma, so that rational therapeutic interventions can be developed to restore T cell infiltration and sensitivity to T cell checkpoint blockade. This research focuses on normalization of tumor oxygen metabolism to increase T cell metabolic fitness and on pro-inflammatory activation of tumor myeloid stroma.

Dr. Curran received his PhD in Immunology from Stanford University, where he was awarded the McDevitt prize for best graduate thesis in his year. In addition, he was the first recipient of the prestigious American Cancer Society Levy Fellowship to fund his post-doctoral studies in the lab of Dr. James P. Allison.

While pursuing his postdoctoral studies at Memorial SloanKettering Cancer Center, Dr. Curran published several influential manuscripts describing how T cell co-stimulatory pathways could be modulated in tandem to mediate immunologic rejection of melanomas in mice. Dr. Curran was the first to describe how combination blockade of the T cell co-inhibitory receptors CTLA-4 and PD-1 promoted the rejection of a majority of murine melanomas – a combination that remains the most effective FDA-approved immunotherapy.

Yvonne Saenger, MD Columbia University Irving Medical Center Yvonne Saenger, MD, is a medical oncologist focused on the immunotherapy of melanoma and gastro-intestinal cancers. Her laboratory studies immune biomarkers in cancer with a focus on early stage melanoma where she has discovered a prognostic immune gene signature. Her group has also developed digital pathology biomarkers using quantitative immuno-fluorescence and deep learning based analysis of digitized H&E images.

This two-and-a-half hour program features two sessions.

The first session will open with an overview of the grant submission process, briefly outlining funding opportunities and the principles of grant writing. The session will address K Awards and R01 Grants, in addition to discussing how to best write a Specific Aims page. The second session will consist of a “mock study section,” allowing attendees to experience how a study section evaluates a grant proposal, which will help attendees identify points that determine the success or failure of a grant proposal and help them optimize the process of grant re-submission.

Program Organizers David Aggen, MD, PhD Memorial-Sloan Kettering David Aggen, MD, PhD, is an assistant attending on the genitourinary oncology service at Memorial-Sloan Kettering. His focus is on novel immunotherapeutic strategies for the treatment of genitourinary malignancies.

Robyn Gartrell, MD Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Robyn Gartrell, MD, is a pediatric oncologist and early investigator in immunooncology and precision medicine, inspired to use advances in the science of tumor immunology to develop more effective and more personalized therapies specifically for children.

Olivia Rongze Lu, PhD

Grant Writing Workshop

Dell Medical School, The University of Texas, Austin Rongze “Olivia” Lu, PhD, is a tenure track assistant professor of neurosurgery at Dell Medical School, The University of Texas, Austin. Through close collaboration with clinicians at Dell Medical School and Dell Children’s Hospital, her research focus is on investigating the molecular mechanisms of immune suppression and evasion in brain tumor microenvironment with the goal to develop novel immunotherapeutic for brain tumors.

Dr. Lu’s previous research has identified that protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) regulates immune suppression in T cells in multiple tumor models including brain tumor.

Based on those findings, a Phase Ib/II trial is planned by the National Cancer Institutes (NCI) to study combining PP2A and PD-1 inhibitors to treat brain tumors. Dr. Lu received her BS from Tongji University in Shanghai and PhD in cancer immunology from Beckman Research Institute at City of Hope.

Dr. Lu pursued postdoctorate studies at Genentech under the mentorship of Lasker Award Laureate, Dr. Napoleone Ferrara. Her postdoc research focused on the role of myeloid derived suppressor cells in tumor angiogenesis and resistance to anti-VEGF therapy. After her postdoc training, she joined Medimmune/AstraZeneca and AbbVie, leading multiple drug discovery programs for inflammatory diseases and cancer.

Dr. Lu has published in high profile journals including Nature, Nature Communications, Plos Pathogens, Cancer Research and Journal of Biological Chemistry. She served as section editor of immunotherapy for Journal of Translational Medicine from 2017-2018 and organized the Society of Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) Cancer Immune Responsiveness Workshop as session chair in 2018 and 2019.

In addition, she served as Session Chair for the SITC Cancer Immune Responsiveness Task Force and is a member of the Early Career Scientist Committee in 2020. In 2020, Dr. Lu received a Career Development Award from the Department of Defense.

Claire Vanpouille-Box, PhD Weill Cornell Medicine Claire Vanpouille-Box, PhD, is an assistant professor of cell biology in radiation oncology at Weill Cornell Medicine. Her lab is investigating key factors which impact immunogenicity of ionizing radiation (from X-rays, alpha- and beta- emitters) in glioblastomas (GBM). More specifically, she is interested in dissecting the role of TGFb superfamily members (i.e. TGFb and activin A) in the neoplastic transformation of malignant gliomas, as well as in the immunosuppression of its tumor microenvironment. Her main goal is to gain a better understanding of the molecular pathways and cellular responses from the host and/or tumor that results from an over activation of the TGFb superfamily following radiation therapy, with the expectation to identify new actionable targets for the manipulation of anti-tumor immune responses against glioblastoma.

Dr. Vanpouille-Box received her PhD in experimental pharmacology in 2011 from the University of Angers, France.

Determined to pursue an academic career and intrigued by the emerging role of radiation in cancer immunotherapy, she decided to join the lab of Dr. Sandra Demaria in 2011 to conduct her postdoctoral training. She has published 32 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and has received numerous prestigious awards including: the 2014 Marie Curie Award from the Radiation Research Society (RRS), 2015 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Susan G. Komen Scholar-in-Training Award from the AACR, 2017 American Association of Immunologists Early Career Faculty Travel Grant, and 2019 Radiation Research Foundation (RRF) Career Development Award.

Program Organizers Grey Wilkinson, PhD Oncolytics Biotech Inc. Grey Wilkinson, PhD, is a Transnational Scientist with Oncolytics Biotech Inc. where he leads the biomarker and translational science program in support of the clinical development of an immuno-oncolytic virus.

Dr. Wilkinson received his PhD from the University of Calgary, where he studied Biochemistry and Molecular Biology before transitioning into the private sector. He is active in extracurricular activities and is a current member of the Society for the Immunotherapy of Cancer’s Early Career Scientist Committee.

Smalley, MD, Memorial Award and Lectureship each year to a recognizable clinician/scientist and luminary in the field that has significantly contributed to the advancement of cancer immunotherapy research.

Established in 2005, it is the society’s most prestigious award, honoring those that have been pioneers in their work and made a notable impact worthy of high regard and recognition by their peers. As a part of the award, the honoree serves as a primary keynote presenter at the Annual Meeting, giving a 45-minute lecture on his/her research and the award is accompanied by an honorarium of $5,000.

Weill Cornell Medicine Annual Program Committee Chair Sandra Demaria, MD, a native of Turin, Italy, is Professor of Radiation Oncology and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City. She is internationally recognized for her studies demonstrating the synergy of radiotherapy with immunotherapy in pre-clinical cancer models and was the first to show that radiotherapy can convert tumors unresponsive to immune checkpoint inhibitors into responsive ones, a finding that is being translated in several clinical trials at multiple institutions.

Her lab has a central interest in addressing the molecular mechanisms that regulate ionizing radiation’s ability to generate an in situ tumor vaccine in both preclinical models as well as cancer patients. As a breast cancer pathologist, Dr. Demaria also studies the immunological microenvironment of breast cancer in patients and therapeutic strategies to modulate the immune infiltrate in preclinical models and in patients.

Dr. Demaria obtained her MD from the University of Turin, and then moved to New York City for her post-doctoral training in immunology as a Damon Runyon-Walter Winchell Cancer Research Fund awardee, followed by a residency in anatomic pathology at NYU School of Medicine (NYU SoM).

She remained on the faculty at NYU SoM until 2015, raising to the rank of Professor.

Helen E. Heslop, MD Baylor College of Medicine Organizer Helen E. Heslop, MD, is Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, and the Director of the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston

Dr. Heslop was a Doris Duke distinguished clinical research scientist and is an elected member of the American Association of Physicians. She serves as Principal Investigator on several peer-reviewed research programs, including an NCI-funded program project grant (Enhancing T-Cell Therapy of Cancer) a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Specialized Center of Research (SCOR) award (Immunotherapy of Lymphoma), the Meg Vosberg Stand Up to Cancer Dream Team in T cell lymphoma and a SPORE in lymphoma from the NCI. She is also the principal investigator on an NHLBI-funded training grant in Cell and Gene Therapy and Chair-elect of the BMT-CTN. She is a Past President of the American Society for Gene and Cell Therapy (ASGCT), the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplant (ASBMT) and the Foundation for Accreditation of Cell Therapy (FACT).

Brianna W. Hoffner, MSN, ANP-BC, AOCNP Harborside Organizer Brianna Hoffner, MSN, ANP-BC, AOCNP, is the Director of Clinical Outreach and Development at Harborside, an oncology publishing and communication organization. Prior to joining Harborside, she was an Assistant Professor and the Lead Advanced Practice Provider for Medical Oncology at University of Colorado. She has extensive experience caring for patients with advanced malignancies, including research management for patients on clinical trials. In her clinical practice, Ms. Hoffner focused on the understanding of immune related adverse events.

Ms. Hoffner received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Boston College and Masters of Science Nursing in Adult Oncology from Yale University. She has published in multiple prestigious journals including JAMA, Cancer and Vaccine and has presented her work at numerous meetings including SITC, ASCO, JADPRO Live at APSHO, NCCN and ONS.

Dr. Demaria has authored more than 100 articles and has received awards from the American Cancer Society, the Department of Defense CDMRP, the U.S. National Cancer Institute and several private foundations. She serves on the editorial board of the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer, Cancer Immunology Research and The Journal of Immunology. She has held leadership positions in national professional societies, including the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC), the AACR Cancer Immunology Working Group and the Radiation Research Society.

Dr. Heslop is a physician scientist engaged in translational research focusing on adoptive immunotherapy with genemodified effector cells, to improve hemopoietic stem cell transplantation and cancer therapy. An additional focus in reconstituting antiviral immunity post-transplant, she has led an NHLBI-funded multicenter trial of allogeneic multivirus specific T cells. She therefore has extensive experience in developing and conducting transplant studies and cell and gene therapy studies and currently holds over 20 INDs.

Miriam Merad, MD, PhD Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Organizer Miriam Merad, MD, PhD, is the Mount Sinai Chair Professor in Cancer Immunology and the Director of the Precision Immunology Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.

She is also Co-Director of the Cancer Immunology Program at The Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Institute and Director of the Mount Sinai Human Immune Monitoring Center (HIMC).

Dr. Merad’s research over the past 20 years has focused on understanding the mechanisms that control the development and functional identity of tissue resident dendritic cells and macrophages during homeostasis, and examining how these regulations change in cancer and inflammatory diseases. The overarching goal of her laboratory is to identify dysregulated pathways in macrophages and dendritic cells harnessed to treat Cancer and Inflammatory diseases using both genetically engineered mouse models and human lesions to address these questions. To expand the understanding of immune cells contribution to human lesions, she founded the human immune monitoring center at Mount Sinai to implement technology platforms to maximize information obtained from limited biological samples.

In 2016, she took leadership of the Precision Immunology Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine (PrIISM) to continue to lead initiatives to enhance human immunology science.

PrIISM integrates immunological research programs with synergistic expertise in biology, medicine, technology, physics, mathematics and computational biology which come together to frame novel questions to understand the contribution of immune cells to disease initiation, progression and response to treatment, to implement cutting edge technologies and to develop novel immunotherapy strategies for the treatment of human diseases.

Dr. Merad has authored more than 180 primary papers and reviews in high profile journals. She receives generous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for her research on innate immunity and their contribution to human disease, and belongs to several NIH consortia. She is an elected member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the recipient of the William B. Coley Award for Distinguished Research in Basic and Tumor Immunology.

Padmanee Sharma, MD, PhD The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Organizer Padmanee Sharma, MD, PhD, is a Professor 48

in the Departments of Genitourinary Medical Oncology and Immunology, and the Scientific Director for the Immunotherapy Platform at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

She is also the Co-Director of Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Sharma is a nationally and internationally renowned physician scientist whose research work focus is on investigating mechanisms and pathways within the immune system that facilitate tumor rejection, with subsequent clinical benefit, or elicit resistance to immune checkpoint therapy.

She is a trained medical oncologist and immunologist and the T.C. and Jeanette D. Hsu Endowed Chair in Cell Biology. She designed and conducted the first pre-surgical trial, also known as a window-of-opportunity trial, with immune checkpoint therapy (anti-CTLA-4) in 2004, which allowed her to study the impact of immune checkpoint therapy on human tumors, with subsequent identification of the ICOS/ICOSL pathway as a novel target for cancer immunotherapy strategies.

Dr. Sharma continues to design novel pre-surgical trials to evaluate human immune responses to different immunotherapies and she is the Principal Investigator for multiple immunotherapy clinical trials that focus on translational laboratory studies. Her studies enable development of new immunotherapy strategies for the treatment of cancer patients.

She is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and received the Emil Frei III Award for Excellence in Translational Research in 2016, and the Coley Award for Distinguished Research for Tumor Immunology in 2018.

Jedd D. Wolchok, MD, PhD Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Organizer Jedd D. Wolchock, MD, PhD, is a medical oncologist who specializes in the treatment of melanoma. His research focus is on the development of innovative ways to use the immune system to treat cancer.

Dr. Wolchok is an active clinician scientist who has been at the forefront of cancer immunotherapy and was principal investigator in several pivotal clinical trials, including pivotal trials that led to the FDA approval of ipilimumab and nivolumab for patients with advanced melanoma. He also directs a translational research laboratory focused on nextgeneration immunotherapies and combinations.
