Escape

To break free or to break away from

Never have we had such a feeling like this and for this to affect the entire globe. Well, it’s just history being made. But, after speaking to everyone on the pages of this issue, I have a different perspective. Not only is history being made, but people (globally) have come together, picked up the pieces, sparked new creativity and have risen above. Galas have been held, PR rockstars are full speed ahead, the tequila is flowing, watch sales spiked and the wine is fine. I feel very fortunate to know these folks now and have learned valuable lessons from each and every one. We have all been challenged, but if you find the passion from within, then the sky’s the limit regardless of your surroundings. Now that we have returned to somewhat of a “normal” environment (but are still uncertain of the future), we are able to take advantage of open business, whether locally or globally. And, with a heightened sense of our surroundings, healthier eating and new technology, this allows us to take control a bit more. So, thank you for taking time to peruse this issue and joining us on this fabulous escape from NYC to Monaco!

LUXURY THE

OF TIME

DEDICATED TO AUTHENTICITY Paul Altieri, Founder and CEO of Bob’s Watches By

Christian Shane Dougherty

https://www.bobswatches.com/

P

aul Altieri is the company’s Founder and CEO and one of the world’s top Rolex experts. He is responsible for all the day-to-day activities from purchasing, receiving, marketing and sales. Paul now spends time focusing on the strategic vision of the company and overseeing customer service needs. Paul is a graduate of Boston College 1979 and resides in California with his family. Bob’s Watches is the World’s

First and only Pre-Owned Rolex Exchange where consumers can buy, sell, and trade vintage and used Rolex watches at true fair market value. They openly publish the current buy and sell values for each Rolex model allowing us to serve as an online marketplace for buyers and sellers looking, quite simply, to get the best deal. Paul was kind enough to take a few moments and speak about recent growth, the importance of transparency and just being honest to one customer at a time.

How did you develop the concept? In 2010, people had no way of knowing what the worth was, how to sell it or true authenticity. We only had E-Bay, or Craigslist as resources – nothing reliable. Because of our transparency, reliability and honesty, our growth has expanded significantly over the last 11 years. We just love what we do. What motivates you to drive the business? I am a competitive person and enjoy the vibe of e-commerce. The vibrancy keeps me young and creates innovation – our sales and communication via the internet resembles the excitement of the stock market. I get up every day and look forward to what the day may bring.

Can you speak about the product(s)? We are 80 percent Rolex. Rolex dominates the secondary market, although we do carry Omega, Panerai, Tudor and many other popular brands. We have amazing products, tremendous customers, and an excellent team of people at work. Every watch we receive goes through a very thorough inspection – every screw to crystal, so we guarantee 100 percent authenticity which sets us apart from every other company on the planet. Why buy refurbished? When we first launched, we were 25 to 40 percent less than retail. But now, the refurbished market has been on fire and some models are going for twice the retail price due to supply and demand. The Daytona is a perfect example of this and is

extremely popular. Demand has been increasing every month. Where is 2021 taking Bob’s Watches? I truly feel the rest of the year will be great – the economy is bouncing back, and everyone is excited to get back to some type of normal and start traveling. Regarding the secondary market, it is surging right now, so I believe the rest of the year, and into 2022, will be strong.

FLASH LIFE I could now tell stories the way I wanted to, using pictures I took, while being paid for it!

Q:

How did Flash Life originate in Miami?

A:

STEPHANE CHICHE President, FLASH LIFE TV By Christian Shane Dougherty

Q:

Would you give us some background on your personal life? Where you grew up and how you got into the business…

A:

I am from Paris and was definitely lucky to grow up in one of the most beautiful cities in the world! My dad was a photo enthusiast who loved catching memories of family and friends. I still have these vivid memories of us gathering each year to watch the family vacations through a slide show projector. This truly taught me the value of telling a story with images!

917-273-1479 schiche@gmail.com www.flashlife.tv After high school, I went on to study engineering and computer science in Marseilles before heading to my first job in New York as a software engineer. New York is everything people imagine it to be and more! The energy there is phenomenal. Soon I was working in information technology as a consultant for big banks on Wall Street. It was fast paced and exciting, but I was always yearning for something more glamorous and more artistic. At the time, I was going to all the trendy places in New York, taking lots of pictures and posting them on social media. Facebook was starting to get very popular, and they got noticed. Some people wanted to hire me to shoot their private events or fashion shows and post them.

From past visits, I loved the relaxed Miami lifestyle, the weather, the beaches, and what seems to be an endless stream of attractive people. After living for a decade in New York, I needed a change of scenery. I moved to Miami Beach and started capturing interesting moments when I was going out. People enjoyed having their picture taken and loved how they came out! In turn, they invited me to their next events! Everyone wanted to see these pictures, so I started a page on Facebook and posted the images and organized albums with each telling story. I called the page “FLASH LIFE” to evoke the flamboyant and extravagant lifestyle that these pictures were describing. But, I always thought something was missing from still pictures. They looked great, but they just didn’t capture what it really felt like to be there. Then, video equipment technology evolved to capture what was really going on at all these glamorous events, while not being intrusive. After buying one of these cameras, I started filming. There was nothing like it, not in Miami, not anywhere - the Facebook page took off from there and quickly passed 100,000 followers!

Q:

Flash Life looks like a very fast-paced and busy lifestyle for you. How do you keep fit and looking good?

amazing events, it’s easy to have fun even sober, with the added benefit of remembering everyone you meet and be fresh the next day. I highly recommend it!

Q:

What makes Flash Life extraordinary?

A:

A lot of people in South Florida hear about a new place by seeing one of our videos, which has made us the most influential social media page in Miami. I even had people tell me they moved here in part because of videos they saw on FLASH LIFE! Several videos have gone viral and have been seen by millions! Just last week, we got more views and engagements - likes, comments and shares - than the mighty Miami Herald. In fact, we are the only destination on the web with this collection of amazing events and lifestyle videos. I don’t know of any other website or page around the world, from Paris to Ibiza, that shows you in one place what it’s like to go to the private parties, exclusive events and enjoy the music and art scene. That’s why we’re thinking of expanding our unique concept around the world and are already talking to a few people. I won’t say much more about this at the moment!

Q:

What’s in store for the future?

A:

A:

When your job takes you out almost every night, you can’t last long without some discipline. I do try to run 3-4 miles, 5 times a week, usually on the boardwalk in

Miami Beach where I live. Then, I do weights for 20-30 minutes. I watch what I eat of course, but most importantly, I drink very little alcohol and most nights nothing at all. When you are in good company at

Building on the success of our media platform, we are in the process of transforming FLASH LIFE into a full-service digital marketing company to help businesses in South Florida create engaging and interesting content to bring in new customers. We are also working on a smartphone app that will help you find the perfect place to go out, but in a completely new way that’s super intuitive! Finally, we are partnering with local designers to create a completely original and extremely sexy swimsuit fashion line. After all, FLASH LIFE is all about what’s sexy and exciting in Miami. So stay tuned!

How did you get started in the business? After being economically laid off from a company where I held export commercial functions for 10 years, I continued to go to clubs, restaurants and lounge bars to meet people and network. There, some directors suggested I organize some events in Lyon and around. Then, since 17 February 2012, I had been requested by international companies, brands, professionals and media,

from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, regarding more than 300 events and experiences in France and abroad.

Tell us a bit about where you grew up? I was born at the Minguettes in Vénissieux, a popular suburb of Lyon in France. Today, I live in Genas (25 km east of Lyon) near Lyon Saint Exupéry Airport and the “Groupama Stadium,” Parc OL from the Olympique Lyonnais, the

football (soccer) teams of which Jean Michel AULAS is the president.

Has this always been your passion? My passions are to share moments of conviviality, practice sports, discover and taste wines and Olympique Lyonnais, the football/ soccer club. I remain at the disposal seven days a week, 24 hours a day to some ambitious professionals with budgets who request these bespoke services: the organization of customized events, the creation of concepts-several artistic and business opportunities and partnerships during business, artistic, fashion/couture/ haute couture, sports, clubbing, international events in prestigious places (hotels, palaces and resorts, restaurants, lounge bars, clubs, private beaches, yachts, villas, etc.) in France and all around the world networking, branding, customized consulting and coworking -concierge service

Who, or what, inspires you? I am 44, in hypothyroidism since very young, ex-morbidly obese, weighing up to 175 kg, then having lost 100 kg without a gastric ring, neither bypass, nor s l e e v e . According to me my daily

struggle is extreme. I have invested and continue to invest in myself and overcome so many hardships (being aware that many are worse) already experienced. I have experienced many insults, judgments, discriminations suffered. So many people who did not see or knew

my potential, so much, I felt guilty, I doubted, I experienced failures, lost confidence in myself, but I’ve always tried, even very weakly, never to give up. And therefore, to go forward even if very slowly, being demanding towards myself, exposing myself authentically and showing by facts - my way of being. I try to stay simple and humble, serene as I am, I simply live fully every moment of true life, the wonder of the moment shared, in action, availability, learning, the proposal of opportunities and the values to which I am faithful. I want to improve every day and remain determined, persistent, ambitious and ready to meet a new challenge. According to me, only facts and references are significant.

The first annual Maria Callas Monaco Gala & Awards, by its President and Founder, and famous Royal Artist Ioanna Efthimiou, in the iconic Salle Empire of the Hôtel de Paris in Monte Carlo, on 10 May 2021. The event was held under the High Patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco. The event was also supported by the Greek community of Monaco and the Greek Tourism Organisation. The inspiration of the event is the revival of the first legendary Gala that took place

in 1960, with the great opera diva Maria Callas enchanting the crowds with her unique voice inside the Opera House of Monte Carlo and in front of her close friends, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, and of course her great love Aristotle Onassis. The magnificent Gala included award presentations to outstanding personalities who have excelled in their personal work through different fields such as music, opera, sports, medical sciences, entrepreneurship, tourism, philanthropy as well as highlighting the work of Maria Callas. The event began with the reception of the prince by the organizer Ioanna Efthimiou, who first guided him to the art exhibition of a well-known art gallery in Monaco represented by Iro Vachari - Kampani, and then personally introduced all the award winners of the event. Big names were awarded such as the internationally renowned singer Nana Mouskouri, the Monegasque young pianist Stella Almondo who

ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 20)

GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21)

LEO (JULY 24 - AUGUST 23)

Family will play a more important role in your life now, Aries. That means any previous misunderstanding or chasm can be fixed and made better. The secret to your success is to approach others in an overly sensitive manner. You do not need to agree with them, but if you make them feel heard, it will go a long way. You are respected and others seek your approval, even if they do not admit that to you! Future plans can be made more on your terms.

This is a good time to focus on your finances and future security, Gemini. It can be an emotional subject but now, not only do you have a fairly clear idea of what you need to do, you know exactly what to say and how to say it to make it happen. If money has been tight, things may loosen up. If you have not worried so much about it recently, you may discover even more reserves for yourself and loved ones. But, you have to look and put forth the necessary effort.

There will be moments that will make you feel like a cosmic force is leading you in a certain direction. Go with the flow, Leo, and use it to find greater calm and mellowness in your life. Destress and pull back if you can with more meditation or relaxation techniques. You might also consider volunteer work for a worthy cause that makes you feel happier and good about yourself. This is self-care time for you. The benefits that manifest this week can last for a long time.

TAURUS (APRIL 21-MAY 21)

CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23)

VIRGO (AUGUST 24 - SEPTEMBER 23)

If you need to convince others of something important to you, find ways of reaching them on a more emotional rather than logical level. Taureans have some great ideas. Some are quite revolutionary and can bring careful and beneficial changes around you. So, plan your course of discussion, get others into your sphere and deliver your message. Who knows where this can go?

What is it about you that makes you so popular now, Cancer? Your charisma is high, and you may be feeling more festive and happier than usual. Do not waste this energy. Embrace the moment and enjoy being the center of attention. There are things you can do to make others around you feel special and loved. And it will be easy to accomplish. Use what you have to expand your social circle to meet and greet. You will sweep others off their feet!

If you have been feeling a little isolated (and who has not recently) this could be an excellent time to try to reach out and connect, or re-connect, with others. This can be done virtually, or in person, with great success. Any contact can give you an emotional boost and prepare you for a (new) normal in your social life. So do not be shy, Virgo. This can be a wonderfully fulfilling time where plans for the future can be made and started with friends.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24 - OCTOBER 23)

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 - DECEMBER 22)

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21 - FEBRUARY 19)

Zesty Sagittarians may find that their love life gets a boost now. You are full of romance and filled with optimism and are raring to get out there to make your moves. If you are in a love relationship, make the bonds stronger with emotional and physical comfort. If you are seeking a soulmate, use this time to reach out. Others are attracted to you, and you may have a choice of who, when and where. The most important thing is to get out there!

If there ever was a time to just roll up your sleeves, buckle down and get things done, this is it, Aquarius. You seem ready to get to work. Not only do you have great reserves of energy and enthusiasm, you are also able to prioritize what needs to be done and will easily find others who want to help you out. So go forth and accomplish. Check things off your to-do list. Anything you do now will give you more free time to fully enjoy your summer.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24 - NOVEMBER 22)

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 - JANUARY 20)

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20 - MARCH 20)

Expand your knowledge of a particularly interesting subject, Scorpio. It will not only open up your mind to new possibilities, it will take you out of any hum drum feelings and spark your imagination. Doing the same thing day after day has been wearing and might have sapped you of your enthusiasm. So, break out of your routine. You may also want to plan a fun getaway or vacation. It has been too long, and you deserve a relaxing respite.

Relationships – whether business, friends, family or love - become much more important to you now, Capricorn. They can give you a clear sense of your place in the world and offer you security, life balance and comfort. So, see which ones need a little bit of tender loving care and find ways of balancing your needs with those of others. This is a time of outreach and assessment, so the future months are filled with support and connection.

Review what you really need from your career and see if you are on the right path, Libra. You can now carefully, and critically, survey the landscape and can make the best decisions as to what you need to do to get to where you want to be professionally. Is a change of direction in your future? If so, you will find the emotional strength and support to do what you have to do. All roads can lead to success. All you have to do is navigate the signs.

Pisces just want to have fun. And, why not? You feel particularly inspired and especially creative now. Follow your muse and try some new art forms that enable you to express yourself. Or plan the perfect party and get others to join in. Anything that you decide to do will spark your summer and lead to new ideas and fun adventures. Life has been too dull and stressful. Embrace this new optimism and verve to make your life more beautiful, artistic and enjoyable.

hanelle is a TV talent, fashion entrepreneur and nonprofit advocate. The global agency/consultancy she founded has been called by many as “disruptive and unique.” Chanelle closed her online high-end designer boutique and style/society blog in 2018 in favor of a global nomad style business model with more mobility and zero merchandise – digital, PR, influencer marketing, brand strategy, content and creation agency/consultancy. She has worked with some of the leading fashion brands, retailers and media/entertainment companies in the world. These include Vanity Fair, Saks Fifth Avenue, Prabal Gurung, John Varvatos, Rag & Bone, 7 for All Mankind, J Brand, Lululemon, J.Lindberg, Nicole Miller, Ella Moss, Hudson Jeans, True Religion, Scott Kay, Joe’s Jeans, Lucky Brand, Deloitte, Fox, Disney, Sony Pictures Entertainment and AT&T Entertainment Group.

When did you realize you were interested in luxury and fashion? Since I was young. It was a natural draw to luxury and fashion.

From where do your influences come? Who inspires you to be your best? My influence can come from anywhere at any time. It may be tidbits of information from different fascinating people at the right moment. It can capture you, inspiring you to make changes or act on impulse.

What is your typical day like? I may not have a notion of the typical day – every day is different. Mainly, I focus on production work and external affairs during the early part of the week and internal tasks the later part of the week.

Can you tell us a bit about what you feel your greatest achievement was recently? The greatest achievement is hearing from many saying the agency/ consultancy I founded is unique and disruptive. They have never seen anything like this! And, I have created an excellent brand. The agency/ consultancy has also attracted talents from top institutions.

What is in store for us next from the House of Chanelle? I cannot disclose everything, but a couple of things coming are futuristic and entertainment related. Our international capacity will help brands with their new market entries!

Jason Geller, JMediaHouse Founder

VISION & VALUES

Geller started JMediaHouse with a vision to work with clients who share the same values and beliefs in building brands using strategic messaging and positioning within the media. JMediaHouse serves a variety of clients in various industries such as health and fitness, food and beverage, spirits, luxury goods, men’s fashion, health tech, media, sports, etc. I had the opportunity to chat with Jason… https://jmediahouse.com/

By Christian Shane Dougherty Tell us a bit about where you grew up? Have you always been interested in PR? First, I have to say this is very strange to be the one being interviewed because I am always the one guiding my clients through these. So, thank you for the opportunity. I grew up in Cherry Hill, NJ, a town right outside of Philadelphia. Cherry Hill was about 20 minutes from Philly and an hour and a half from New York City, which is where my public relations career began. Public Relations was never on my radar as something I wanted to do as a career. My dream was to play professional tennis, but after playing in college, I quickly realized there was a whole other level that I was just not able to compete. After graduating from college, I moved to NYC with a degree in business and a focus on finance. I figured I would work in the financial sector, which wasn’t very appealing to me. I ended up living down the hall from Jai Rodriquez, one of the stars of the popular TV show, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Jai and I became friends, and he hired me as his assistant/business manager, which is where I was first introduced to public relations through his own publicist at a company called Big Machine Media, which now goes by the name of Big Machine Agency. The rest is history.

It’s been a challenging time. How do you keep ahead of the game and grinding? Yes, this past year has been challenging for every industry and PR is not an outlier. I am thankful that we have incredible clients who were able to “duck and weave” with us throughout the pandemic and find creative ways to garner great press for their businesses. Public Relations in and of itself is a grind, in a good way. Every day takes on a new and different challenge which keeps things fresh, and therefore it makes “grinding” fun in a way. We have been very fortunate to be able to grow JMediaHouse throughout the pandemic with current and new clients looking to better build back in their respective industries.

What keeps you motivated to keep the machine going? Has any one person(s) inspired you? Well, to be completely honest, I am motivated by my clients. We work with a very wide-ranging clientbase who are mostly entrepreneurs with early-stage businesses very similar to my own. We are all very much cut from the same cloth and have goals we’d like to achieve. I see how passionate they are for

their own businesses, and that they will stop at nothing to build something special and successful. They keep me motivated day-in and day-out. This may sound cliché, but my wife Amy has always inspired me. We have known each other since we were kids, and she knows me better than anyone. Starting your own business when having a family is not for the faint of heart, and she has always had my back when things got tough. She was a guidance counselor at an NYC high school for many years and had HUGE responsibilities for her students - 200 of them! Parents think helping their own kids get into college is hard - try doing it for 200 kids. While doing that, we also had two of our own children, so make that 202 kids for which she was responsible. She is definitely the driving force behind my desire to work hard every day.

Explain that moment you decided to branch out on your own. I had been thinking about going out on my own for a while. Doesn’t everyone? Being my own boss was always something I had imagined but never thought would happen until about four years ago. I was working at a PR agency at the time and regularly had past clients calling and asking if we could work together. While I was excited by the opportunity to bring new business to the agency, we had a fee structure that wouldn’t allow for it, i.e. the potential clients didn’t have huge budgets to spend on public relations, but they had budgets. After the fifth or sixth call, and turning them away because of fee differences, I thought why don’t I start my own PR agency, so I did, and that’s when JMediaHouse came to fruition.

What are your plans for JMediaHouse in 2021 and beyond? The first quarter of 2021 has been great. I think a lot of it has to do with the country seeing a light at the end of the tunnel in regards to the pandemic. Businesses that have been in a “holding pattern” for the past year are beginning to ramp up and start talking about how they were able to pivot and are now coming out on the other side. We are starting to hire new team members as we continue to grow. The plan for 2021 is the same as it’s been in previous years – continue to keep our clients as the main priority and help them grow through the media. If we keep that approach, I am confident that JMediaHouse will continue to grow at a steady pace throughout 2021 and beyond.

VEGAN Lifestyle

What is a vegan lifestyle? When we talk about veganism, many people hear the word “diet” as part of the overall conversation. After all, one of the most well-known aspects of the vegan lifestyle involves not eating meat or animal by-products. However, by centering diet at the soul of the conversation, we might be doing a disservice to vegans. There’s far more to the veganism ethos than simply controlling what one puts in his or her mouth, and ignoring those facets of the vegan lifestyle denies its power.

The Vegan Society defines the vegan lifestyle as “a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.” That’s pretty comprehensive. Vegans lead with intent. They do their best to create a world, however small, in which no animals are harmed in service to humans.

And it goes far beyond diet.

If you’re thinking about going vegan or if you already consider yourself a vegan, it’s important to understand why you make specific choices as a consumer and human and why you choose to avoid things that other people consider commonplace.

Vegans have been behind many of the protests that lobbied against circus acts and other entertainment venues that force animals to perform for human entertainment. A circus has nothing to do with diet — unless you count popcorn and cotton candy — but everything to do with animal welfare.

No, you don’t have to become an academic scholar, nor do you need to tell everyone you meet about your vegan lifestyle. However, part of those movement involves living your values. Instead of just expressing them, you demonstrate them through what you do and choose not to do.

Animals forced to perform for human entertainment often show no signs of enjoying the work or wanting to perform. Consequently, the trainers have to use pain to evoke the desired response from the animal.

Let’s take a deeper look at the vegan lifestyle and what it truly means to those who practice it.

The vegan lifestyle involves actively avoiding any practice that damages animal welfare or subjugates animals for our benefit as humans.

Three Stories In One By Christian Shane Dougherty

We took our life savings to start making tequila - it wasn’t much, but we made it count. Continuing in co-founder Monica’s Grandmothers’ footsteps, we created an agave spirit perfect for us. We figured if it was our favorite, the world might agree. https://www.siempretequila.com/

There’s nothing in the world like a great tequila! Alex Lacroix’s story is one of inspiration, dedication and passion to make Siempre Tequila a huge success. I was lucky enough to spend some time chatting.

Siempre Tequila Founder Alex Lacroix and Co-Founder Monica Sanita

Alex, how did you become interested in tequila?

the wrong crowd shape your present situation?

I always believed in drinking good tequila in my younger years. And, eventually ending up in an advertising art director position which introduced me to Monica. Tequila is in her blood - her grandmother, and greatgrandmother made mezcal. We started the company in 2015 with 150 cases in Ontario, Canada.

I am motivated by the dark state I was in and never wanting to return. There is always an opportunity for a way out. I was arrested on 27 charges related to firearm possession in Canada. Unfortunately, the environment drew me in, and it is tough to see a way out when you’re that deep. Growing up in Ottawa, I had a wonderful mom. My dad passed away when I was three – my mom worked three jobs to raise me. But, at some point, I just ended up in the wrong crowd.

We started in California. Now, we are in 17 states, and expansion has increased along with signing with a national distributor for a new roll-out strategy. We look forward to catering to every demographic. Final thought. Our overall goal is to try to educate folks that grew up (or growing up) in the same environment as I did. You don’t need to go down that same path, make the same mistakes to realize there’s another world out there! It’s never too late - work a bit harder and the results are phenomenal.

Lord Killigrew, the figure head and inspiration of Cardinham Killigrew, is the 9th great grandfather of designer and owner, Steven C. Funk. By Christian Shane Dougherty

What was your initial interest in shave products, and did you have investors to assist in the start-up? I am an engineer by trade, so I am always dissecting things to either find solutions or new ways to design things. I had always been into fine men’s shave products and skincare, so I simply decided to make my own. I looked at ingredient sets for the finest shave balms in the world and noted all their ingredients. After this, I researched basic lotion recipes. I then researched oils and butters and what they do to your skin. After selecting the best and most beneficial oils and butters and comparing them to ingredient sets of the world’s best brands, I developed my own recipe. It was silky, creamy, did not leave an oily residue, and absorbed quickly. Best of all, I left out all the crazy chemicals and focused on the best ingredients for the skin. I had really just made this for myself. So, I gave the rest away. People simply loved it. I figured what the hell, I will make a little company and do festivals and fairs. At this point, I was in for about $187. I made some bath salts and soaps to go along with it and started working festivals. I sold out at almost every show, once on the first day of a three-day festival I was sold out. I arrived home at 11:00 PM and worked through the night to create more of everything. We barely made it through the weekend. It was, however, a lot of work making

very little, so I decided to add a higher margin item. I developed a wooden shave kit box and loaded it with just off the shelf items. My thought process was if I can just sell maybe one or two of these each show, that makes my costs, and the rest is cake. I made five. The first day of the next festival, all five were sold within two hours. I revamped the company just around shave products. I added shave soaps, hand mixed colognes, etc. I designed wooden boxes and contracted with companies to make them. I even had companies making various razors, straight razors, and manicure tools; now I still make all the balms, soaps, colognes, and finish the boxes in my studio. I received a patent on my box design, developed literature around it with revenue from the fairs. Once I went online it exploded. I have shipped to approximately 19 countries and just about every state. These became huge as groomsmen gifts and evolved from there. Everything was funded by me with cash from sales. From where do you pull your motivation? I really am inspired by old world Europe, fine boutiques and a gentlemanly lifestyle. I built the brand around that, sort of an old school Englishman. That is when began playing polo. I used my company and the sport of polo to promote the brand and its lifestyle. Then I started polo just to live that lifestyle further.

Cardinham Killigrew aka Steven C. Funk, The House of Killigrew and Patriot Wines CEO

If we are sitting here a year from now celebrating what a great year it has been for you, what achievement would we be celebrating? I would say something as refining the process to the extent that I was able to spend less time working into the wee hours of the morning and more time with friends and family. Efficiency is the goal now, while maintaining quality and sanity. What obstacles have you overcome to get where you are today? Sort of ties into the above. As any entrepreneur knows, family friends, free time, stress, are all casualties of being a business owner. Benefits, yes, but it does take its toll. Luckily, my wife supports me and every hair brained idea I have. She is a true saint and has given up a lot to support me. I could not have succeeded without her.

Tell us a little about the winery and any future plans. My passion has been wine making for about 20 years. Yes, I know, home winemaking, awful, but this is not the crazy neighbor’s wine. I have worked on making the finest wine for almost two decades. I do not just do what most people practice and toss some juice in a jug and bottle in in a month. I work from grapes brought in from California and Italy. I follow strict practices of pressing and fermenting, and then I blend and age in oak barrels for a year or more. If you ask anyone that enjoys my wines, they will tell you they are some of the best. Easily, my wines compare to $30 to $75 wines, and I make them in more of an old-world style. A couple years back, I met a great friend named Chris. I was helping him learn the art of wine making, and we hit off a great friendship. I count him now as my best friend. He grew as a wine maker, and I found companionship in the art of fine wine. He knocked around the idea of starting a boutique winery and went from there. The winery is called Patriot, and it is an old-school winery that plays on colonial America and the American revolution, telling stories of locations, battles and people. It is a great concept that not only makes amazing wines but tells a story of the country in the process. As for the near future, I am working on both companies, as well as starting a clothing line. And, of course, playing lots of polo!

t Celerier’s Cellar, we believe in simply sharing the best wines on the planet with our clients. We do much of our work “old school,” and that means working hands on with the best French wineries and vineyards to offer a folio of hand-selected, fine French wines. You will find the best French growers are represented here at Celerier’s Cellar, and that translates into our wine list that, up until recently, would only be available to professionals and the finest restaurants in the United States. Now these curated French wines are available to you at Celerier’s Cellar online.

How did this business come about?

With my wife Maggie, who is a Pennsylvania native, we lived in Paris and its burbs for 10 years. On our off time, we would visit Bordeaux, my native region, and spend time discovering new vineyards recommended by friends and family. Over the years, we created solid friendships with vintners who operate their family estate for multiple generations. Their care, craftmanship and humble prices are still impressive. Little by little, some of them voiced an interest into exporting to the USA while being very cautious. They wanted to work only with people they trust.

Motivated by family reasons, we ended up moving to the States. We decided then to start operating in the Lehigh Valley as importer and wholesaler for the restaurant industry in Pennsylvania. Six years later, we are now also producers after teaming up with our biodynamic vintner, Maison Arnaud Boue in Burgundy. Our wines can be found at celerierscellar.com (delivery

only for PA, DC, FL and soon CA, OR, NV), and we always visit the wineries to check their process and farming techniques before working with them. What main factors do you take into consideration when choosing wine?

t Celerier’s Cellar, we believe that A wine is an art, and art is the extension of its artisan. Knowing the family that crafts the wine is the primary aspect. Above everything else, in the beginning, we choose the vintners we want to work with over their wines. After spending time on the vineyard, dedicating ourselves to check the farming methods and vinification processes, we select wines that could answer the need for our clientele (restaurants and direct customers). We bring samples back to the USA and host a blind testing for 30 to 50 people from the restaurant industry: Sommeliers, managers, owners, chefs, etc. Who else better than a restaurant expert could define how unique and valuable a wine is? And, the funny part is that 90% of the samples we believe will appeal to them are picked. In your opinions, what are the biggest faux pas that customers tend to make when ordering and drinking wine? ere are two habits that could be Th counterproductive.

The first one is related to purchase solely based on ratings. These reviews are very helpful when you start your journey to discover wine. However, when experienced enough, they should not be essential anymore. Some reviews also provide good rating as a purchasable service. The best way to discover wine is to taste them, go to a restaurant and have the sommelier’s recommendation. Discover them with your friends or wine tour - be proactive about it. When it comes to the second one, I call it the “Amazon Syndrome.” People are ready to pay more money overall if it means that delivery is offered. People would be ready to pay $25 on a wine that could be found for $15 with an extra $2-$3 for shipping somewhere else, if that means delivery is offered.

Shipping is never free - it is included. That is completely different. As for choosing wine, be proactive, compare prices online and take all parameters in considerations, not just what is free. If you could only drink one wine for the rest of your life, what would it be? is is probably the toughest question to Th answer!

To my heart, all the producers and the wines we carry impersonate what I would like to drink all my life.

If I have to only pick one - dang, that is hard! Let us go for https://celerierscellar.com/ collections/red/products/maison-arnaudboue-gevrey-chambertin-2017 Only 75 cases were made of this Pinot Noir from Burgundy, following the biodynamic farming techniques. It is mind blowing.

What is THE most underrated wine on the market right now? I will answer about the most underrated REGION of France There are millions of labels. It is impossible to do justice to each and every underrated one.

Languedoc is a region that suffers from bad reputation. While it was, throughout the medieval age until mid19th century, one the highest rated regions thanks to a fantastic terroir that brought very high standards and therapeutic wines (Fitou, Saint Chinian and Faugeres for example). The start of mass production lowered the overall quality. Branded as industrial and low-quality products, Languedoc is having a hard time stepping away from that mark. We have witnessed a lot of wineries working with sustainable, organic and biodynamic techniques. It is a reasonable yield, high quality product, yet still very affordable because of a century old misbehavior. If you really want to be astonished, try the most underrated red grape from the most underrated region: Merlot from Tour de Gatigne. It tastes like an expensive Merlot from the Bordeaux Region - high tannins and structure, round flavors and a long lasting finish. www.celerierscellar.com
