PUBLISHER’S LETTER

Nothing quite compares to a Hamptons summer. I would say the same goes for autumn. Come September, the Hamptons transforms into a different but equally vibrant version of itself. Events continue without pause, often focusing on a creative community that may not shine as brightly in beach-going months as it deserves. October brings the annual Hamptons International Film Festival, where a mix of established and emerging artists show us their talents. The festival is a highly enjoyable experience. Of course, there are the typical fall activities — apple picking, playing a round at Montauk Downs, or riding your bike through the less traveled Hamptons roads. But, out here, everything seems a little more special. Maybe it’s because eating a freshly picked apple while walking on a sun-drenched beach can’t be beat. In November and December, the Hamptons is still a great place to spend time with family for the holidays. Back in the city, Fashion Week is right around the corner. Since fashion informs Hamptons culture in such a pivotal way, catching a show will always keep you in the know. Manhattan offers endless possibilities for an active social life, but something about the Hamptons offers things I can’t describe in this letter. Trying to find out may define your life.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

“All in all, it was a never-to-be-forgotten summer — one of those summers which come seldom into any life, but leave a rich heritage of beautiful memories in their going — one of those summers which, in a fortunate combination of delightful weather, delightful friends and delightful doing, come as near to perfection as anything can come in this world.”

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography

~ L.M. Montgomery, Anne’s House of Dreams This summer, I hope you created moments that will last a lifetime. You may have done so and not realized it — do you remember looking out at the horizon and forgetting about time because the powdery gold sunset was spellbinding? Even the most quotidian moments are full of magic. It’s witnessing those everyday things and being grateful for them that truly imbue those moments with value. So many people are looking for the next best thing . . . so eager to find wonder they don’t realize that they can create meaning and wonder. Many lack the skill because they’ve been constantly searching instead of constantly creating. You are the magic makers! You are the next best thing! This is the moment! How do you celebrate the moments you relished? For me, photography is a way to hold on to my favorite moments. Remember when you had to print photos in order to see what you captured with your camera? I still love printing photos and making albums. It’s such a joy for me to go through books and have the images organized and know exactly what happened in a specific year. Don’t just forget those moments on your iPhone or cloud, print them and share them with friends and family. Thank you to everyone that was part of Social Life’s summer — our incredible readers, writers, photographers, and team players. This was our best summer yet and I will forever treasure the memories.

JEWELRY

JEWELRY WITH A DEEPER MEANING By Serena Furstenberg

G

lenn and Sharyn Bradford have opened a unique jewelry shop in Southampton, where their life’s journey began, and they’ve brought their passion for jewelry and art with a deeper meaning to Jobs Lane. Clients have been known to pack up their jewelry boxes and travel by private jet or boat to visit with the “spiritual jewelry guru,” Glenn Bradford, who has cultivated a reputation and following for reimagining tired family jewels. Last year, Glenn and his artist wife, Sharyn, opened their second year-round shop, Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry Southampton, at 10B Jobs Lane. The showroom space, designed by Sharyn, is a display of creative inspiration. Adorning the blue and ivory handpainted striped walls are Sharyn’s oversized, color-rich canvases, which infuse a positive and creative vibration into the gallery space. This renaissance couple has a long history with Southampton. Not only has Glenn’s work been featured at some of the most beloved Hamptons shops throughout his 30-year career, but Sharyn and Glenn actually met in a share house in Southampton 24 years ago and have been returning ever since, spending quality family time every summer with their three children. What sets Glenn apart as a jewelry designer is his process. He goes on an intimate and often cathartic design journey with each of his clients. While delving into their jewelry boxes, he helps them to rediscover and reconnect with their past. “Prized and sentimental gemstones are often trapped in outdated and faded jewelry,” he says. Glenn’s unique ability to connect with each of his clients allows them to share the history of each piece as he organically reimagines their original engagement ring, their grandmother’s favorite pin, or that basic pearl necklace. “It’s all about connecting their past with who they are now, and aspire to be. We stress preserving their heritage, while creating their own legacy with a deeper meaning.” What is born from this process is a magical, one-of-a-kind design that bears each client’s name. His award-winning collections grew out of these bespoke design journeys. Glenn and Sharyn collaborated to create three of their newest spiritual collections: Buddha,Word Art, and Heaven and Earth. Another line of jewelry includes one-of-a-kind cocktail rings that feature exquisitely carved gemstones with magical appeal.

In addition to their award-winning spiritual jewelry collections and Sharyn’s fine art, they have carefully curated a collection of the most coveted estate jewelry, diamonds, rare gemstones, and collectible watches, including signed pieces from Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, Rolex, and Patek Philippe. The Bradfords’ shops have always served to raise funds and awareness for worthy causes. This tradition continues in the Southampton shop. As part of establishing roots, they have partnered with many Hamptons charities, including Southampton Arts Center (across from their shop), Gimme Shelter, Southampton Hospital, Dancers for Good, the East Hampton Library, and most recently they were a of sponsor of the Michael Bolton Charities Summer Gala, which supports women and children in need, and donated their award-winning 18K green gold “Buddha of Compassion” to the live auction, and held a week long “Shop for Charity” in their Southampton shop. Whether you might want to bring new life to an old piece of jewelry or adorn yourself with a new piece of jewelry art, visit this chic, hip shop. It is surely a destination not to be missed. glennbradford.com 10B Jobs Lane, Southampton 631.400.9800 279 Main Street, Port Washington 516.767.1600

DR . JACQUIE SMILES MAKES THE WORLD BETTER ONE SMILE AT A TIME By Frances Gormley

T

rust Dr. Jacqueline Fulop-Goodling, who has been named an Invisalign Super Elite Provider, reserved for the top 1% of doctors in North America. In addition, Dr. Jacquie has developed Dr. Smiles, an exciting new teethwhitening product that is a game changer. She tells us about it below. Teeth whiteners seem ubiquitous. What made you enter the market? For many years my patients complained about their experiences with teeth whitening. Both in-office and at-home whiteners were disappointing. Either they didn’t whiten as expected or they caused painful tooth sensitivity. I was determined to fix these problems, so I worked for two years with an FDA-approved lab to develop Dr. Smiles, my proprietary, revolutionary formula and patented applicator. We make custom trays via digital scanning, and my patients can have whitening done in-office in one visit, or they can do it themselves at home every other day for three days. Dr. Smiles produces superb whitening results with no accompanying sensitivity. In 2018, Dr. Smiles, will be available to professionals and consumers alike. Is it worth it for adults to have braces? Absolutely! Invisalign is a great choice because, well, they are virtually invisible, and they can even be removed when eating. I can help anyone from a person with one crooked to tooth to someone with a serious asymmetry. A beautiful smile is more than cosmetic. Misaligned teeth can affect a person’s health in specific ways. For example, they are harder to clean; therefore, cavities, gum disease, and bad breath often result. Unhealthy gums allow bacteria to cause inflammation elsewhere in the body, possibly leading to heart disease and stroke. Improper chewing has led to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other gastric disturbances. Having a beautiful smile keeps you healthy from the outside in. Can you tell us something about the Dr. Smiles Foundation? My husband, Anthony Goodling, and I started the Dr. Smiles Foundation this year, a non-profit whose mission is to help change the world one smile at a time. Our foundation will partner with corSocialLifeMagazine.com

porate and celebrity projects that fit with our goals of giving back by paying it forward. Our upcoming initiatives are a Dr. Smiles run to benefit medical research, a Dr. Smiles College with Confidence scholarship program, and Dr. Smiles anti-bullying effort. You’re also paying it forward with an interactive portal for young adults on drsmiles.com. Yes, I want young people to be empowered by inner confidence. Beautiful white teeth are a great beginning for what is shown on the outside, and I can give young people a dazzling smile. As a successful, professional woman, I knew I could offer even more. Beginning in 2018, we will be giving expert advice on everything from gaining confidence and self-esteem to dental health and teeth tips. Believe it or not, dental health and mental health are connected. It is a fact that when you smile you release the “feel good” transmitters dopamine, endorphins, and serotonin, which not only relax your body but can also lower your heart rate and blood pressure. f you have been lucky, this summer was a time to relax outdoors on a beautiful Long Island beach. “We all love summer, but, let’s face it. The season can have a significant effect on one of our most precious assets: our skin,” says Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, a nationally renowned and awardwinning cosmetic plastic surgeon. “With summer winding down, now is the time to consider how you will look this autumn. As you return to your everyday life, you should look refreshed and relaxed.” For a quick pick-me-up, Dr. Greenberg recommends injectables and fillers. “Patients are thrilled with the results of our injectables, which yield great results thanks to a mixture of expertise and cutting-edge technology,” says Dr. Greenberg. “Botox, Juvéderm, Sculptra, Kybella, and Voluma continue to be among the most popular must-have, tried-and-true injectables and dermal fillers, but you’ll be surprised by how we have innovated their use and improved their results.” As always, injectables and dermal fillers gently plump skin and combat signs of aging by safely smoothing persistent wrinkles, relaxing facial folds, filling depressions, and adding volume to the face. According to Dr. Greenberg, specialized injection suites at his offices enable the administration of Botox and filler injections in a unique, comfortable, and upscale environment. “We are able to provide special A traditional facelift targets the imaging to show patients what middle and lower third of your “We are able to provide special they may expect to look like after face, while a mini-facelift targets imaging to show patients what one or more treatments,” says Dr. only the lower face. YOUR AUTHENTIC YOU By Somers Farkas

T

he wisdom of taking care of our health reaches back millennia. In scripture, it is written our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, which we have received from God; the Quran maintains that good health is in conformity with salvation; and today, modern health professionals urge the same message, knowing a nourished body will lower the risk of cancers and numerous diseases. Whether you follow a healthy lifestyle as a dictate of your religion, or to avoid health risks, or simply for your external appearance, your motivation is your own. Also personal are core beliefs. In her book Transforming Victim Consciousness, Lynne Forrest says these beliefs which originated in childhood can be destructive and are “painfully limited and limiting patterns of thought . . .that hold you prisoner. . . .” These negative patterns of consciousness compel our behavior and affect our bodies. We are now more aware of the powerful mind-body connection through which emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors take effect. As summer ends, many of us reflect on the months spent with friends and families. Fond memories may be clouded by disconcerting ones. The recognition that, though always dressed to the nines, an in-law or confidant’s behavior was consistently unsettling – belligerent or outlandish, morning tennis games or golf rounds routinely cancelled because of headaches and lethargy, unsteady steps and indistinct articulation as cocktail hour becomes dinnertime. That tony façade may be disguising a real and potentially devastating medical condition: chemical or alcohol dependency. Addicts and alcoholics are commonly believed to be unemployed, deficient in self-control, deprived, unkempt, or antisocial. Often, the face of addiction among the affluent does not look like this. And there is little evidence that wealth provides any protection from developing a substance abuse disorder or aiding in its recovery. To the contrary, prosperity is often a barrier to recovery. Addiction + Affluence

“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy — they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby SocialLifeMagazine.com

Thayer Cheatham Willis’s book Navigating the Dark Side of Wealth: A Life Guide for Inheritors discusses how financial wealth can be detrimental to one’s mental, moral, psychological, and emotional well-being. As Willis explains, wealth adds a layer of complexity that heightens the struggle to find intimacy and develop trust, and this, together with the pressures to excel and impress, deny and enable, perpetrates addictive behavior. So, too, parents and spouses will often use wealth as a weapon for control, resulting in a need to manipulate emotions and mask personal needs.

Discover the best of your authentic self With over a decade of success developing programs to treat America’s most elite and private substance users, Veritas Palm Beach is a highly regarded integrative health institute. Veritas’s founder and director, Blayre Farkas, LMHC, is a New York City native who is qualified to treat wealthy individuals suffering from the complexities of substance use issues. A child of extreme wealth — educated in Swiss and New England boarding schools as well as an Ivy, with summers in Southampton and winters in Palm Beach — Blayre uses her personal perspective, coupled with a treatment model based on the neurobiology of addiction and associated underlying issues to create successful options for those who need help. Drawing on the best practices taught at institutes such as Harvard University’s Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, the Veritas paradigm capitalizes on the statistically validated success of both Eastern and Western medicines. This integrative approach does not follow the traditional 12-step or group-therapy models, but instead relies on a tailored treatment: medication and clinical treatments together with complementary and alternative offerings, such as martial arts training, harm reduction techniques, vibrational sound therapy, TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation of the brain), EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprogramming), mindfulness skills education, vitamin therapy, meditation, yoga, massage, and acupuncture. Distinguishing opportunities for growth rather than demanding change Veritas is a new frontier in healthy living and substance overuse treatment. Discarding the traditional definition of words like relapse and disorder, Veritas instead exposes patients to an internationally renowned team of allopathic medical consultants in disciplines from psychiatry to endocrinology to gerontology. They work together to discern and understand the basis

of an individual’s physical, emotional, and spiritual suffering, to then address substance use and co-occurring mental health issues. The difference is obvious as soon as you enter the private facility. Well-appointed living rooms lend the air of a familiar elegance, a milieu to which Veritas clients are accustomed. The staff are recognizable as peers, which creates an atmosphere of acceptance and peer-topeer accountability. Also surprising are the innovative methods — from microbiome testing (to determine gut micro-organisms’ effect on the brain) to genetic identification (to recognize any genetic predisposition or susceptibility to anxiety, chronic pain, and depression), and GeneSight testing (to determine how your DNA responds to certain medications). Other methods include discreet electronic accountability technologies (such as Soberlink, a Bluetooth enabled, user-identified breathalyzer that establishes an accountability link to a care manager’s phone), or BACskyn, a wearable device that measures blood alcohol levels in real time), or sophisticated proprietary digital health interventions, such as an app that pairs BAC levels with individualized psychometrics to enable patients to identify their subjective vs objective reality of poor impulse control and drunkenness — to distinguish opportunities for growth and empower clients to be their best selves. The Veritas paradigm is a highly individualized, wholly integrated solution that pushes its clientele to have not just a good life, but a best life. The team not only arrests substance-use troubles, but strives to return patients to their optimal health physically and emotionally, often surpassing the highest quality of life they had previously known. The founder’s commitment is so grounded, she will fly, and has been flown around the country, to perform interventions.

Blayre Farkas

The answer for this desperate need to help contemporaries, friends, and family requires a personalized, three-fold approach, combining biological exploration to understand the medical nature, cognitive therapy to challenge behavior patterns, and integrative medicine to condition the whole body. Also important, however, is the therapist’s ability to empathetically relate to the experiences of the addict. Today, there are many boutique health centers that specialize in treating addictions among the privileged population. These centers are staffed with clinicians and therapists who share the socio-economic backgrounds and quite often, the addiction itself, with their clients. This commonality provides a lifesaving lens on treatment and an invaluable understanding of social and professional expectations, thoughts, and triggers that can cause relapse.

Full disclosure: Blayre Farkas is the younger of my stepdaughters, both of whom make me proud. Please know, I do not write as a stepmother, but as a contributor who wants to help others.

DR . CHRISTOPHER CALAPAI LEADS A NEW ERA OF STEM CELL THERAPY By Nicole Clarke

CELEBRITY PATIENTS Dr. Christopher Calapai, a board certified family practitioner, has become a leader in the use of stem-cell therapy in the United States. He is treating a wide range of disorders, from diabetes to Alzheimer’s to erectile dysfunction. He consults with patients in Manhattan and at two offices on Long Island (East Meadow and Plainview). If you’re a radio listener, you may have heard some of his success stories on his two weekly call-in shows on WABC-AM. Dr. Calapai has also been a medical consultant for the New York Rangers hockey team. Over the years he has advised Mike Tyson, Mickey Rourke, Steven Seagal, Chris Noth, Donal Logue of Fox’s hit series Gotham, and the actress-model Anastasia Garvey.

BREAKTHROUGH IN USING BONE MARROW STEM CELLS New research shows that bone marrow cells are much richer in stem cells than fat cells, a common source. “Bone marrow is the greatest tissue of the body because it’s filled with stem cells, with platelets, and with immune cells,” Dr. Calapai explains. “It’s filled with the best things that you have, which are delivered very gradually into your tissues over time.”

HOW STEM CELLS ARE HARVESTED A slender tube device is used to extract bone marrow, and the whole procedure takes about 90 seconds. The bone marrow liquid is then fitted into a high-speed centrifuge, and two billion cells become available as opposed to three hundred million from fat. “It’s a far greater number of total cells.” And the more cells, the faster the healing. “The results are quicker because the cells divide daily, so with the greater the number of cells, results are more significant,” explains Dr. Calapai.

HOW STEM-CELL THERAPY WORKS Stem-cell therapy is a technique in which specific cells taken from your body — bone marrow or fat —are extracted and injected into tissues or the bloodstream, and these cells create healing for growth and repair of your body. The cells used in the therapy don’t have a unique identity, or blueprint. “When your eye, for example, makes new cells, they can be only eye cells. Your hair or heart cells can divide only within the realm of the same cell,” Dr. Calapai says. “There is a special type of cell that exists in your fat and your bone marrow that can be used to go anywhere and take on the identity of anything else.” Stem-cell therapy has proven beneficial in treating a range of chronic conditions, including, Alzheimer’s, erectile dysfunction, arthritis, joint pain, stroke, heart and kidney failure, COPD, MS, lupus, and Parkinson’s disease

HOW STEM-CELL THERAPY BENEFITED A MAN WITH PARKINSON’S DISEASE One recent case saw a dramatic improvement in a Parkinson’s patient who had been in a wheelchair for a long time prior to his treatment. Within two months of beginning treatment, the patient started having more stability, and was able to get up and use a walker. But even after his first stem-cell treatment, this patient reported that his vision had begun to improve. Over time, his tremor lessened, and has now gone away. He can shave with a razor blade, and his handwriting is back to normal. “We compared his handwriting on forms from his first visit to his handwriting two months later, and we could see his handwriting had become completely legible, says Dr. Calapai. He says the gentleman is walking quickly with a walker, but he anticipates that he soon won’t need it at all. “Also, this patient had been holding his forks and knives like a child would, with his whole hand because he was unable to use his fingers. Now he’s using his utensils completely normally,” says Dr Calapai.

TOP 10 BACHELOR LIST The New York Post named Dr. Calapai one of the ten most eligible bachelors in New York. Because Princess Diana was known to be dating a doctor in London, Dr. Calapai was listed as a suitable escort to a then-separated Princess Diana on her trip to New York City, and people teased him about it endlessly. “For five years, everybody teased me about it,” Dr. Calapai says, laughing at the memory. “Every patient came in asking about it, asking what is she like, for years. It was pretty incredible.” SocialLifeMagazine.com

Dr. Calapai also enjoys entertaining at home; his specialty is leg of lamb, based on a family recipe his mother taught him. Dr. Christopher Calapai drcalapai.net 516.794.0404

At only 25 years old, Emir Bahadir is a modern renaissance man who manages his days by seamlessly shifting from real estate mogul to entrepreneur to professional jetsetter. Heir to a generations-old Turkish real estate empire, Emir founded Bahadiring Realty, a real estate brokerage and development firm that encompasses all aspects of the newest technology available to the industry. He most recently formed an alliance with his family’s successful real estate company in Turkey, founded in 1935. By forming this partnership, Emir adds to his extensive knowledge of property development, construction, and sales management and can connect with investors in Europe and the Middle East. With a natural eye for luxury, Emir has grown the company to include his endeavors in luxury lifestyle, entertainment, and commerce. His following of 550,000+ on his Instagram account, @emirbahadir, has enabled Emir to brand his luxe lifestyle by chronicling his over-the-top jet-setting escapades, using the popular hashtag #bahadiring. I speak four languages — English, Turkish, Italian, and French — which has only enhanced my appreciation for travel. Any words of wisdom for the budding entrepreneur? My father said it best, ‘Life is full of opportunities. When you truly believe in something, perseverance becomes your secret weapon.’ It’s tough to measure how you stack up when it comes to taking risks. One litmus test I give myself is how resilient I am when I face rejection. Part of being an entrepreneur is understanding that things might not always go according to plan, but if you believe in yourself, it makes it much easier to keep going and not give up. You are clearly very passionate about entrepreneurism. What has your journey been like? It has been exciting to start something new in uncharted territory and see it grow. My family has been in real estate for four generations, which afforded me an early opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge about property development, construction, and sales management. After I graduated from New York University, I decided to start my own brokerage firm in New York City. I felt that my family was already doing the best job possible in Turkish, Middle Eastern, and European real estate and that opening up in NYC would help me build my own business while extending that of my family’s as well. My lifestyle brand, BAHADIRING, has come along organically from my Instagram following. With a growing following of over half

a million, I’ve noticed how engaged people are in my travels and lifestyle. Therefore, launching products that I use in my daily life seems the natural next step. My journey has really been about having a mindset that anything is possible by tapping into my passion for turning those dreams into reality. With a family so deeply rooted in contracting and development, what have you brought with you and made your own? Coming from a family background such as mine, I feel that I bring a strong understanding of the development process and an investor’s needs. As with all things, I am making it my own by combining the newest technology available to assist in project development and marketing. I come from a generation that has grown up surrounded by constantly evolving technology, so the possibilities presented by the digital world are always top of mind. The possibilities of the digital world are an integral part of my life, unlike the previous generations of my family. As a result, I recognize the opportunity to apply new platforms to a traditional real estate business and develop an innovative virtual business model. Using online platforms to forge connections with others or to pursue new ideas is as natural to me as breathing. I understand you are launching a clothing and cosmetics line. Can you tell me a little bit about the launch? I am very excited about launching my brand, BAHADIRING. The inspiration was to create products for men who are always busy and on the go, but need good quality and results. For my skincare line, I am collaborating with a prestigious French brand to launch a men’s line. My clothing line is all about comfort and versatility. Launching this fall, the collection will provide all busy, stylish men the perfect pieces to look good, no matter what. You are constantly traveling from place to place and country to country. How do you maintain a work-life balance with your personal and professional life? Since I’ve been a world traveler my whole life, it hasn’t felt like much of a challenge. It’s been an easy balance because I feel at home in most, if not all of the countries I travel to for business. Similarly, I would go away on holiday to these same places. I am also very strict about keeping my personal and professional life separate in the sense that I treat clients who are my friends the same as any other client. They are provided the same high standard of service and professional treatment as anyone else. It’s important to be respected in your own right. To add a little more balance to my life, I’m always sure to do at least one fun, non-business-related thing while I’m traveling for work. I love living in New York and feel at ease here, but I always miss Turkey and my family, so I make sure to go back as often as I can. Emir Bahadir bahadiring.com

ROSEMARIE ARNOLD FROM WASHINGTON HEIGHTS TO WAINSCOTT By Virginia White Photography By Gregory Partanio

I arrived a half hour early at the summer home of Rosemarie Arnold in Wainscott for my interview with a woman whom I’m told is “the best attorney in New York and has agreed to be on our cover.” I was greeted in the white gravel driveway by Robert Arnold, a welcoming, jolly, and straightforward middle-aged man in an Under Armour bathing suit, who had been lying on a lounge chair by the pool with his wife, Jackie, on the most picturesque lot I ever could have imagined. “My sister is not here,” he said matter-of-factly as he walked toward me on the white marble tile that adorns the pool. “You’re early,” he said, seriously. As I begin to apologize, explaining that I miraculously didn’t hit any traffic, he stops me midsentence and says, “I’m just kidding. It’s no problem; she’ll be back soon. I was going upstairs to get a slice of pizza. Would you like one?” “No thank you,” I replied (since it’s 10:30 in the morning), but I would love a bathroom. “We don’t have one,” he says. I was new to my job, but I would soon learn that the whole Arnold family has this same warped sense of humor. He laughs at his own joke. “Follow me,” he says and leads me to the inside of the house. “I’m Robert, Rosemarie’s favorite sibling,” he says as we walk up the steps to the second story of the restored barn. I’m delighted at what I see. The house is adorned with different sized signs “mostly from Sag Harbor,” which demonstrate my subject’s sense of humor and appreciation for life and love for the beach. “Bed and breakfast you make both” reads a beige and aqua sign

hanging from the door as you walk in. “If you are lucky enough to live by the beach, you are lucky enough” says another in matching colors and font. And my favorite, “Please excuse the mess, the children are making memories.” Mess? There is none. The house is immaculate, white couch and all. It smells sweet and summery — fresh flowers from the farm are abundant. The living room window looks out over that colorful fresh fruit and flower farm, then behind it the ocean. Wow. I had done research on my subject but, still, I was taken aback when she arrived at the house, back from her walk to the beach. Wearing a pair of torn blue-jean shorts and a Cornell tank top, this 55-year-old, highpowered, “top 1% of trial lawyers in America” was a ringer for a college student, toned and tanned, unassuming and even less intimidating. She wheeled Iris, her 83-year-old mother (whom I recognized from her TV commercial) in a Burberry wheelchair with Joy, her mother’s white miniature poodle, seated on her lap. “You must be Virginia,” her mother exclaimed as Rosemarie picked up Joy (who weighs less than three pounds) to help her mother out of the wheelchair. Immediately, Joy wags her tail and starts licking Rosemarie’s face. “The dog loves her,” says her mom. She goes crazy every time she’s around. I think it’s because Rosemarie feeds her.” “I do not,” quips the tri-state area’s number one victims’ advocate, as if she were a 10-year-old girl arguing with her mother. She kisses Joy on the head and snuggles her face into Joy’s body. “Rosemarie is a wonderful daughter,” her mother volunteers as Rosemarie enjoys the dog. “I absolutely love her. She’s every mother’s dream. I have six children and 14 grandchildren,” her mother brags. And they are all successful. Iris was to be my best source of information; she tells it like it is and loves to boast. I would come to learn that she has a right to be proud. Iris Toback, who presently lives with her identical twin sister, Fran (the two wear matching Burberry outfits daily), married an obstetrician-gynecologist, Murray Arnold, in 1960. “He delivered all of my children,” she informs me proudly. “Then he dropped dead and left me with six kids. Four of them were in diapers.” I’m not exaggerating, she actually said “dropped dead.” “Rosemarie is my oldest daughter. And the rest of my girls are lucky she was.” Iris explains how “when Rosemarie was five years old, she would climb into her 18-month-old sister Nancy’s crib to give her a bottle while I slept. I would wake up and there would be milk all over the place. But Nancy was happy and fat, so I knew she was getting fed.” Iris explains how Rosemarie was born to be a lawyer. “When they were little I used to tell my kids to go to bed. Rosemarie would argue that there are six of them and only one of me, and they all voted that they could stay up late. I told her this was not a democracy.’ ” Iris, who worked as a New York City public school teacher after Murray died, raised six children in a two-bedroom tenement with one bathroom, in Washington Heights. F E AT U R E Back then, it was a slum. Their apartment was infested with roaches and if she saw a mouse she would stand on the table and have Robert or Rosemarie kill it with a broom. “Now it’s a fancy neighborhood,” she insists. “Very expensive. If we only knew,” Iris says with regret. Iris went back to school for a master’s in library science so that she could earn more money. Rosemarie stayed home and took care of the kids. Says her sister Nancy, “Rosemarie takes care of everyone. She has done that since we were little. Every Mother’s Day I send her a card because growing up, she was like my mother. She still is.” Rosemarie never liked being poor. When she was 13, she lied about her age and got a job sweeping floors and stocking shelves at a local drugstore to earn money. When the owner learned that she was smart, he put her behind the register where they kept the perfumes. Rosemarie sold perfume to every woman — and man — who walked into the drugstore. Eventually, she negotiated for a commission on the perfume she sold. In the summers she worked as a counselor and a lifeguard in a camp for underprivileged Jewish children. She also spent the month of June cleaning, raking leaves, and painting the bunks to earn extra money and get out of the city. While in college, Rosemarie delivered pizza at SUNY Binghamton and worked her way through Brooklyn Law School by teaching kindergarten at PS 173 (located across the street from where she grew up). She taught during the day, went to school at night, and studied on the weekends. “She passed three bars on her first try: New Jersey, New York, and Nevada,” boasts Iris. Growing up in the inner city is where Rosemarie developed her desire to protect the victim, her fear of nothing, and her caretaking abilities. It is no wonder that she has become one of the most successful lawyers in the tri-state area. She opened her own law firm almost 30 years ago, after having practiced law for only two and a half years. During those first years she worked at a small firm in Fort Lee, New Jersey, concentrating on civil defense litigation. She tried and won her first case two months out of law school while her employer was in the hospital having heart surgery. That employer, Christian P. Stueben, still works with Rosemarie and avows how he taught her everything she knows. “She worked tirelessly and never complained,” he said. “She was a quick study. You only had to say things once.” When Rosemarie explained to Chris that she wanted to be a plaintiff ’s lawyer, he supported her by giving her per-diem work and paying her by the hour. More important, he counseled her to ignore the scores of male lawyers who told her she would never make it in the business and to remember to care about people and to recognize that clients look up to lawyers and depend on them in their times of need. Rosemarie has lived by that creed. As both a lawyer and a woman with a legendary work ethic, Rosemarie has made a name for herself in a man’s world. At 29 years old, she became a Certified Civil Trial Attorney. At the time, she was the youngest in the State of New Jersey. She has built her practice into an institution where injured and wronged people come to feel protected, safe, and coddled while seeking justice. In a 2003 profile, which appeared in the Bergen Record newspaper, Rosemarie was labeled “The Court Room Bulldog Who Won’t Be Leashed.” She has apparently lived up to the label. Interested to see the “bulldog” in action, I traveled with her to work one day. Dressed to the nines from head to toe, Rosemarie wore a tight SocialLifeMagazine.com

black Chanel suit with matching high-heeled pumps — Chanel of course. Yes, the pocketbook matched. From this woman’s perspective, she could’ve been a model, she looked (in Iris’s words) drop-dead gorgeous. As she walked confidently through the halls of the Bergen County Courthouse, she was the opposite of the relaxed, private person I met at the beach. Everyone knew Rosemarie, from the sheriff ’s officers at the security checkpoint to the lawyers, judges, and cleaning people in the cafeteria. Rosemarie greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word. She resolved her case successfully, then hugged her happy client farewell and took me to a late lunch at Houston’s, where we ate ribs, discussed her fitness regimen (riding her bike 20 miles a day), and how she finds time to get her nails done so perfectly. (She reads briefs while at the salon). After lunch we went to her freestanding office building in Fort Lee. There is a very large lighted sign with her name on the front of the two-story building, which she owns. I was heart-warmed by the greeting both she and I received from those of her 42 employees who were in the office when we arrived. They seem to generally love her and enjoy her sense of humor. Their loyalty was obvious as they rushed to tell me stories about something brilliant she had done or funny she had said. From them I learned that Rosemarie is a caring and reasonable employer, who treats the lawyers and support staff equally as human beings. All of the partners and most of the 14 lawyers in the firm are women, though not by design, according to Rosemarie. She works around their schedules as best she can, because — as she displays in her own life — she believes that working women can have it all, well almost. I also learned that Rosemarie works around the clock to ensure the success of her firm and that her clients are happy. Many of her employees joke that they receive emails from her at 11:30 at night or at the crack of dawn or on weekends and all of the emails start with the heading: “You don’t have to read this now. I just needed to get it out of my head.” Her favorite holiday is April Fool’s Day and new employees are warned by old timers to fear what she will put them through on that day. Rosalie Rigotti, the file clerk of 20 years, thinks Rosemarie is the funniest person on the face of the Earth, and she keeps everyone laughing through very stressful times. “She understands that she can’t do her job without her files, and I’m the one that brings them to her.” Rosemarie jokes that all of her files are in a database on her laptop and she keeps the file clerk around just to say nice things about her. Many of the employees have been there for decades, including Mary Mazza, who started with Rosemarie when she opened her own firm. Says Mary about her longtime boss, “When she hung out that shingle, many people believed she could never make it. I wondered about it myself when I took the job but after a week, I knew they were all wrong.” The entrance hall of the building is filled with scores of framed newspaper articles about many of the high-profile cases Rosemarie has handled throughout her career and the many awards she has received. In fact, it seems she has received every award, distinction, and accolade any lawyer could have conceivably achieved in a lifetime. Appropriately, in 2017 she received the New Jersey Law Journal ’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the youngest attorney to have ever received that award and one of only two women. In addition, she has been on the New Jersey Super Lawyers list every year since its inception in 2005. She is also on the New York list. She has been named a top woman attorney by the New York Times, and one of the 10 best in client satisfaction by the American Institute of Personal Injury

F E AT U R E Attorneys. She has been ranked in the top 1% of lawyers in America by The Top Trial Lawyers in America organization. She has received the 2016 Women and Wealth and Finance “best woman owned personal injury law firm” award, has been named “Woman of the Year” by the Girl Scouts of America. Rosemarie has received the National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys’ “top 10 attorney” award every year since 2014. In 2016 she was honored by the New Jersey Law Journal as one of the top 20 women lawyers in New Jersey. As if the entrance hall is not impressive enough, the waiting room of the office is filled with hundreds of cards and thank-you notes from grateful clients and some letters of praise from judges. Rosemarie’s personal office is filled with photographs of her children from the time they were young and tchotchkes that she has accumulated over the years from clients and friends. She collects lady bugs and four leaf clovers (also on display in her office) and has found and preserved 29 authentic clovers over her lifetime. “Maybe that’s why I’m so lucky,” she supposes. Maybe. Behind her desk there’s a framed copy of an article written by Christopher London, a respected New York lawyer and a former legal headhunter. In it, London compares Rosemarie’s representation of her clients to “the irreplaceable equivalent of having Socrates, Clarence Darrow, and Mother Teresa in a suit. “Yes,” he says, “she is that good.” He goes on to say that “It is rare to find a lawyer so proficient, with such a strong and disciplined work ethic, a Zen-like strategic sense who is also filled with such compassion, professionalism, and understanding. How do I know?” he asks. “Simply put, she has represented me and those close to me with the greatest degree of care and proficiency.” Rosemarie sits behind her brown mahogany desk and begins to flip through stacks of documents waiting for her review and approval, which have accumulated during the day while she was in court. “So how does a woman from Washington Heights become so successful?” I ask. Rosemarie’s answer is simple. She surrounds herself with competent, kind, and loving people in all aspects of her life. “From your partners to your file clerks to your manicurist to your cleaning staff. No one is successful alone. Next to every good woman there’s another good woman . . . or man.” For instance, she explains, when her children were young she hired Darcy, her nanny of 15 years. “I always knew that when I couldn’t be with my kids, they were well taken care of and happy.” Although Rosemarie never missed a concert, a play, a dance performance, or a backto-school night, she says she would never have been able to keep the schedule straight if it weren’t for the fact that to this day Darcy writes it on the blackboard in the kitchen every day. When Darcy got married to Mathew in 2009, in her hometown of Mobile, Alabama, Rosemarie and her two daughters were in the wedding party. A year later, Darcy had Vivianne, now 7, who, Rosemarie states, “instantly birthed herself right into our happy family.” Darcy feels the same love towards Rosemarie: “I’ve known Rosemarie for over 15 years and in that time she has demonstrated her love of family through unwavering dedication in all aspects of our lives. She tirelessly applies the same commitment to her work as she does her family and she does all of this without seeking attention. The person you see is the person you get. There is no smokescreen. She is as genuine as they come. Her appreciation for life is as beautiful as her heart.” Rosemarie also recognizes her “spectacular paralegals,” Kim Jocelyn and

Tracey Wess, as well as her partners, Sheri Breen, Paige Butler, Natalie Zammitti Shaw, Francesca Nicholas, and Maria Luppino, as being responsible for the success of the firm. Her partners were all once young associates at the firm, whose competence, sincerity, and potential were recognized by Rosemarie, so she promoted them. Paige Butler, Rosemarie’s partner and the managing attorney of her New York office, has a different answer to the question behind Rosemarie’s success. “Rosemarie is equal parts brilliant, aggressive, and compassionate. Whether comforting a client at 11 pm or strategizing at 5 am (while riding a stationary bicycle), she is constantly advocating for her clients with relentless pursuit. Rosemarie is the quintessential mentor who teaches and inspires on a daily basis.” Clearly, the lessons of Christian Stueben are being passed on. Over the past 30 years, Rosemarie has made extraordinary strides for the legal profession but has never concentrated on or been concerned with self promotion. In fact, most of her accomplishments go unrecognized because, for the most part, workplace harassment, sexual discrimination, assault, and other attacks on victims settle with confidentiality clauses. But when you read the genuine, touching sentiments of the hundreds of clients who send notes and cards, it is clear how many lives are transformed by Rosemarie Arnold’s drive and efforts on their behalf. She has championed the underdog for years and is taking cases that other lawyers have rejected, often prevailing or realizing a settlement the client never thought possible. For instance, she made headlines in 2004 when she got nearly $4 million for a mentally challenged Bergen County Park worker who had been sexually assaulted by her boss for many years but no one believed her. Another lawyer had dropped the case, telling the plaintiff that she could not prevail. Because the case involved a public entity, they couldn’t keep the settlement confidential. Rosemarie also won an $8 million judgment for the mother of a New Jersey woman who was kidnapped by an Indian national and murdered in India, and she took on a New Jersey senator and won compensation for his tenants due to their injuries resulting from the dangerous condition of his building. She even took on Governor Chris Christie, of New Jersey, whom she accused of conspiring to deliberately cause traffic at the George Washington Bridge as political retribution against Fort Lee’s mayor, by filing a class action suit on behalf of the “Bridgegate” victims. Rosemarie won a seven-figure settlement for the parents of a 16-year-old girl who was killed on her graduation night in an automobile driven by her teenage friend. Rosemarie helped her parents set up a non-profit foundation, using their settlement money. The foundations members, including Rosemarie, travel to high schools across the state to lecture children about the dangers of drinking and driving. Rosemarie also sits on the board of directors of that foundation and serves as its legal advisor. Rosemarie’s keen legal skills have been written about in two books. The Violinist and the Son of Redhead, by John Melfi, chronicles the life and plays of his brother, the famous playwright Leonard Melfi (who ironically lived and died in the same manner as a character in his most famous play, The Violinist. Leonard Melfi was a victim of malpractice, died unidentified, and was buried as an anonymous person in Potter’s Field). Rosemarie (who was the third lawyer to represent his family in their loss of sepulcher and medical malpractice claim) was hailed as a hero in the several pages of the book devoted to her with the kindest of sentiments. John Melfi wrote: Social Life

F E AT U R E “I lost all trust in lawyers by the time she came in, and I thought it was going to be the same with her. I was wrong. Rosemarie would finally be the one to bring this case to a close in 2014. She was the only attorney who told it like it was. Whether you wanted to hear it or not, she told the truth. She was always available by phone at any time and would always answer my questions or get back with an answer. My only thank you to [name of second lawyer omitted] is that he sent me to Rosemarie Arnold to finish the case.” (Fun fact: Leonard Melfi was the keynote speaker at Rosemarie’s graduation from SUNY Binghampton.) In another book titled Great Is the Truth, Amos Kern, a Horace Mann alumnus, writes about the abuse that the students of Horace Mann were despicably forced to undergo in the 1970s at the hands of their teachers. Most of the book is about the legal battle these students fought. It criticized the paltry settlements of the students who chose to be represented by high-profile TV personalities such as Gloria Allred, and it hailed the client represented by Rosemarie, the only attorney who had the “chutzpah” to actually sue the school using a novel theory regarding the statute of limitations and eventually settle the case for a rumored $15 million. Rosemarie refuses to discuss the settlement, citing a confidentiality clause. While she has the mental DNA for success and she is a self-made woman of the highest order, Rosemarie Arnold can laugh at herself as well. She drives an Audi sedan with license plates “runjrd” and smiles when people can figure out it means “are you injured.” She runs a television commercial starring Iris and Fran, who appear in neck braces and leg casts and bicker over whose attorney is better until they finally realize that they both have the same attorney, of course, Rosemarie Arnold. It’s worth a look. Go on YouTube and search Rosemarie Arnold Super Bowl commercial. (Fun fact: Aunt Fran, who is a retired nurse, assisted in the delivery of Rosemarie’s two daughters.) Rosemarie also used to run an ad in a magazine with a picture of a pretty woman at work with a man’s hands rubbing her shoulders. The caption read “Does your (married) boss sexually harass you at work?” and underneath, the URL www.suethesleazebag.com. When the editor of the magazine told her he would no longer run her ads, she argued with him citing the First Amendment. The argument ended when he told her that it had nothing to do with the First Amendment. He said his mother had found the URL to be distasteful. Enough said. Rosemarie removed the ad. Rosemarie is no stranger to the media. She works as a legal correspondent for Extra TV; she appears to comment on the divorces or legal woes of A-list celebrities. In addition to Extra TV, she has been called upon to give her legal expertise to the New York Times, the Daily News, the New York Post, and the Wall Street Journal. She has also appeared as a legal expert on Good Morning America, the Today Show, The Early Show, Maury Povich, NY1, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX News, and Inside Edition. As good of a lawyer as Rosemarie is, apparently she is equally as good a friend and a mother. When I asked her about her proudest achievement, Rosemarie responded that her number one was having been successful in her career while raising two of the most beautiful and delightful daughters in the world. “Hana and Juliana, who have grown into magnificent, mature, intelligent, practical, funny, and kind women, and whose mother I am beyond grateful to be.” Even Rosemarie’s former husband, Steve Friedman, with whom she SocialLifeMagazine.com

remains close friends, commends Rosemarie for succeeding in creating a post-marital life that has served them and their children well: “Rosemarie is amazing. She is a great mother, a great lawyer, and a great friend. That is probably why our children have turned out to be successful in their own right,” he says referring to their 18-year-old, Hana, who is about to be a freshman at Cornell University Business School and Juliana, a 15-year-old dancer who has performed with the likes of Mariah Carey, Megnan Trainor, T-Pain, and Arcade Fire. Rosemarie, an unlikely dance mom, accompanies Juliana to all of her performances and competitions. “She even hand-stones each of her costumes with Swarovski crystals,” adds Steve. “I don’t know how she does it.” To her friends, family, and the supportive community she has built around her, she is still just Rosemarie, the hardworking, multi-tasking girl from Washington Heights who doesn’t ask for anything, is grateful for everything, and who is beloved as much for her smile and spirit of generosity and humanity as she is for anything she has accomplished in life. Anastasia Matthews, her fellow dance mom/partner in crime, says: “In the many years since the inception of our friendship, I am still astounded (but never surprised) by Rosemarie’s optimism and cheerfulness. I have witnessed a potential adversary become a willing ally. Rosemarie is compassionate, grateful, and humble. If you know Rosemarie, then you know that she often finds rainbows after a storm and four leaf clovers on acres and acres of lush green grass. Though she is blissfully unaware that to those of us who love her, she is the rainbow in our lives and we are the lucky ones. She is the leader’s leader and I would follow her anywhere.” Her brother Robert sums it up: “Rosemarie is good at everything. And she is the nicest, warmest, and most generous person I have ever met in my life.” In my short career, I have never had so much fun writing a story or meeting such happy, positive people. As she bills herself, Rosemarie might actually be “the luckiest woman on Earth.” Hana and Juliana Friedman with their mom

CHAPTER 6 (ABRIDGED)

COMMUNITIES BUILT ON GIVING: MODELS FOR SOCIAL PHILANTHROPY By Jean Shafiroff

This chapter is being reprinted from Jean Shafiroff ’s book Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give, introduction by Georgina Bloomberg, and foreword by Scott Elkins, with the permission of the publisher, Hatherleigh Press.

“The test of a civilization is in the way that it cares for its helpless members.” In communities throughout the United States, philanthropy plays a major role in the lives of many of their citizens. People share their wealth with one another by giving back to their community. Today the most robust, vibrant, and promising cities and towns are communities enriched by philanthropy. Be it a gift of money, or contributions in the form of time and other acts of generosity, citizens who give towards the betterment of the places where they live are working as philanthropists. From large cultural institutions to small-town fundraising initiatives, giving is a part of who we are as Americans—we understand that each of us has the potential to be the architects of lasting change for our friends, our neighbors, and our communities at large. Tens of thousands of individuals are involved in volunteering for charities. Whether it is for an animal shelter, an antipoverty charity, or for New York City’s Metropolitan Opera, people getting together to give and socialize for the benefit of an important cause is a common occurrence in the United States. Many of these same people spend a substantial amount of their leisure time socializing through their charity work. In affluent communities, socializing can revolve around attending charity functions, including dinners, cocktail parties, luncheons, breakfasts, picnics, sports events, polo matches, and musical concerts. The smart charities create events that are

~ Pearl S. Buck

stimulating and interesting for those who attend. Participating in charity events can be a priority for the socially conscious person, and is also a way to show that one cares about a cause. SOCIALIZING FOR A CAUSE Socializing is often an important part of community giving. Gathering together at a philanthropic event is an exciting alternative to a private party; not only is it a place to socialize, but it is a great way to come together in support of a cause and celebrate the joy and power of giving with others. Support is shared among friends; generally, friends and business colleagues try to support each other’s causes to the fullest extent possible. In this way, people learn about new charities and causes, spread the word about an organization’s mission, and prompt more giving. Personally, I have found great fulfillment in charity work, including both the actual work and the socializing associated with that work. My husband and I choose to attend several charity events each month. In many instances, we choose to support a charity event over attending a private party. The events are enjoyable, and we believe in supporting meaningful causes. As often as possible, we try to support not only the causes that we are involved with, but also the causes of others. We make the effort to support the charities of friends Social Life

and colleagues whenever we can. My husband and I like to learn about new charities, and support those charities that have good leadership, manage finances wisely, and run strong programs. Of course, socializing at this level requires time and financial resources, so we do what we can. No one is expected to attend every event or support every cause. When our children were young and studying in school, we were much less involved in attending and supporting charity events. We stayed home more and spent needed time with our two daughters. We made sure we were there for them to give guidance, love, and support. But every effort has meaningful results for the community and a cause, and furthers philanthropy in society.

For those who live and work in New York City, a substantial amount of both social and business communication occurs at these events. New friendships are made and old ones renewed. In New York, the social world, business world, and celebrity world all coalesce and come together to support different causes. Often, public officials show their support by attending these events. Philanthropic organizations hold some of the biggest and most exciting parties, including events for the Metropolitan Opera, American Ballet Theater, New York City Ballet, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Natural History, and the Robin Hood Foundation. As one would expect, there is a charge to attend these events, but by attending, individuals socialize with one another while supporting a good cause. Thousands of events occur each year and billions of dollars are raised. For Example: The Metropolitan Opera (also known as the MET Opera) is a standout example of a 501(c) (3) that has managed to cultivate opera throughout the world. Founded over 125 years ago, the MET Opera is the international home for some of the world’s most talented artists, including the world’s greatest singers, composers, conductors, orchestra musicians, stage directors, designers, visual artists, choreographers, and dancers. With an annual budget in excess of $300 million, the Metropolitan Opera is both well-managed and fiercely powerful in its drive to deliver first rate opera—the MET Opera premieres some of the most important operas in its repertory, and is host to more than 200 opera performances each year. More than

CITIES OF GIVING Some cities stand out for their active and vital social network built around the cause of philanthropy. Below are just a few of the cities where philanthropy plays an important role in the life of many of its citizens. NEW YORK CITY Every year, thousands of people living and working in New York are involved in charitable work throughout the city and its five boroughs. The way New Yorkers give varies; they may serve on nonprofit boards, volunteer their time, give resources, or attend various charity events. Socializing occurs at charity meetings and their respective fundraising events. On almost any given day, there are multiple charity luncheons, dinners, and galas that take place in New York City. 800,000 people attend performances in the opera house each year, while millions more experience the MET Opera through innovative state-of -the art technology and media distribution. The MET also has a highly successful radio broadcast series, now in its 77th year. THE HAMPTONS The Hamptons is a collective name for several beach communities on the eastern end of Long Island. Here, countless affluent New Yorkers, Southern Californians, and Europeans spend their summers vacationing and relaxing by the beach. While often described as the playground of the rich, what many people do not realize is that a very large number of charities hold their events throughout the summer in the Hamptons. These parties begin on Memorial Day weekend and continue right through Labor Day weekend. Getting involved in supporting a charity fuels an exciting social life; charity is very much a part of the fabric and culture of the Hamptons. Each year, more and more nonprofits reach out to the Hamptons to seek the support of its summer residents. Local, national and international charities all hold events in the Hamptons. PALM BEACH Considered one of the most affluent retirement communities in the world, Palm Beach serves as an excellent model of social philanthropy. Philanthropy is a priority for its citizens, with charity luncheons and dinners occurring almost daily. In fact, some say that the social world in Palm Beach revolves

around charitable giving: it is almost a requirement that people be involved in philanthropy on some level. Palm Beach residents seem to genuinely love supporting many different charities. To see a community that collectively makes it a priority to support charitable causes is a wonderful sight indeed! Nancy grew up on the East Coast and moved to Los Angeles in her mid-20s. She was well educated and had a career in the fashion industry, which had given her the opportunity to socialize with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. In her mid-30s she met the love of her life, a prominent doctor. Together they moved and built a life first in the Hamptons, and then in Palm Springs. Nancy loved the idea of giving back and became very involved in philanthropy by first getting involved with the Southampton Hospital in the Hamptons. Giving back has been a very rewarding experience for Nancy. She now is active in charities both in Palm Springs and in the Hamptons. She especially loves her involvement on the Board of the McCallum Theater in Palm Springs. She also loves her involvement Nancy grew up on the East Coast and moved to Los Angeles in her mid-20s. Hamptons. Giving back has been a very rewarding experience for Nancy. She now is active in charities both in Palm Springs and in the Hamptons. She especially loves her involvement on the Board of the McCallum Theater in Palm Springs. She also loves her involvement with Act for Multiple Sclerosis and will be chairing their gala next year. After her husband passed away, Nancy set up a medical education foundation in honor of him. Through her charitable involvements, Nancy has created many new friendships, and knows that she is leading a most worthwhile life. LOS ANGELES Los Angeles, home of the movie industry, is filled with thousands of people who support local, national, and international charitable causes. Celebrities often get involved in supporting causes and can help by bringing visibility to nonprofit organizations. There is no question that celebrities can be very helpful by raising awareness and giving charities their stamp of approval. In addition, celebrities often make major gifts to philanthropy. Outside of the movie industry, there are also thousands of people involved in nonprofits. Just like in any other city, the titans of real estate and finance play a major role in supporting philanthropy. Doctors, lawyers, business professionals, and many others come together to support philanthropic causes. Generally speaking, if you have an interest in a particular cause and live in Los Angeles, you will be able to find a charity that will address the needs of that cause. SocialLifeMagazine.com

SAN FRANCISCO San Francisco has a very active social group of residents that support the city’s arts and cultural institutions. In addition, these citizens support a multitude of other causes. Attending formal fundraising galas for San Francisco’s arts, including the ballet and opera, are exciting events for those most philanthropically inclined. The San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Ballet, DeYoung Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art all hold major galas that are sought-after events to attend. These cultural institutions also hold major fundraising campaigns. Those living just outside of San Francisco and who have made their fortunes in the technology field have been instrumental in donating very large sums of money to health and educational institutions. For example, in 2010 Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com, and his wife, Lynne, gave a $100 million gift to build the new UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. ABOUT JEAN SHAFIROFF Jean Shafiroff, a philanthropist, a humanitarian, an activist, and the author of Successful Philanthropy: How to Make a Life by What You Give, is a volunteer leader of several charitable causes. She serves on the boards of eight charities and, in addition, is an ambassador for the American Humane Society. Jean is married to Martin D. Shafiroff, an investments advisor, and together they have two daughters. She and her family reside in Manhattan and Southampton.

ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION RITA HAYWORTH GALA By Lizabeth Zindel

O

n July 28, the Alzheimer’s Association Rita Hayworth Gala held its Hamptons kickoff party. Anne Hearst and Jay McInerney co-hosted the gorgeous event at Ashgrove Farm in Water Mill, NY, with gala founder Princess Yasmin Aga Khan (daughter of Rita Hayworth) and 2017 gala co-chairs Karyn Kornfeld, Robin Meltzer, and Daryl Simon. The Hamptons kickoff was held to celebrate this fall’s upcoming 34th annual Alzheimer’s Association Rita Hayworth Gala. The black tie affair will be held on Tuesday, October 24, at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Willie Geist, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe will emcee the benefit. Gala co-chair Kornfeld said, “This year we are trying to give a younger feel to the gala with passed desserts and a fantastic band. We want to inspire new generations to get involved with finding a cure for this devastating disease.” Kornfeld is committed to finding a cure for Alzheimer’s and has a personal connection to the disease. “My grandmother was diagnosed with Althezimer’s. It was devastating that we didn’t recognize the signs of what was happening to her for years. She was quietly suffering and trying to maintain her dignity, which caused her a lot of emotional pain. After she was formally diagnosed, she deteriorated quickly. A lot of time was lost when we could have been helping her,” Kornfeld said. This heartbreaking loss inspired Kornfeld to work tirelessly with the organization. She has a long history with the association, as the first junior committee chair and as an active member of the Rita Hayworth Gala Steering Committee for many years, alongside her mother Louise Kornfeld, who chaired the 2007 gala. The Kornfeld family was honored at the 2014 Rita Hayworth Gala with the Family Philanthropy Award for their dedication, compassion, and financial support in the quest to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Kornfield said, “I am inspired every day by the memory of my grandmother. She was a vivacious and wonderful woman and to see what happened to her was devastating.” Since the inaugural Rita Hayworth Gala over three decades ago, the New York City, Chicago, and Palm Beach events have raised more than $72 million to support the Alzheimer’s Association.

At the kickoff party, Nina Garcia, creative director of Marie Claire and judge of Lifetime’s Project Runway was announced as the Gala’s Champion Award Recipient. Aga Khan, Meltzer and Simon all gave remarks to the crowd, including an update from the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in London, the world's largest forum for the dementia research community. The evening included an exciting silent auction, which raised funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research programs. Attendees included gala founder and daughter of Rita Hayworth, Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, gala co-chairs Robin Meltzer and Daryl Simon, hosts Anne and Jay McInerney, Champion Award recipient Nina Garcia, Brooke Shields and Chris Henchy, Rudolph and Judith Giuliani, Brendan Shanahan, Nicole Miller, Candace Bushnell, Janna Bullock, Dan Gasby, Alina Cho, Cornelia Sharpe Bregman, Sharon Bush, Margo and John Catsimatidis, Somers Farkas, Chele Chiavacci Farley, Nurit Kahane Haase, Louise Kornfeld, and Ellen Deutsch. A TRUE HAMPTONS CLASSIC By Jacob Puck

J

ane Babcook, a “Multi-million Dollar Club” member at the Corcoran Group before joining Brown Harris Stevens in 2015, is now one of the top producers in the very competitive Brown Harris Stevens Bridgehampton office. This summer, Babcook and her Brown Harris Stevens colleague Mark Baron joined forces to offer their clients complementary expertise and continuous availability, and their team has been a great success. Babcook’s life — private and professional — is closely associated with the equestrian world of the Hamtpons. We wanted to find out more. Many Hamptonites know you have a long and loving history with equestrianism. How has that translated in your work? Just as I focused on the best of the best in the horse world, I strive for the exact same in my real estate career. Since I started real estate over 20 years ago, I have remained close to my friends from the equestrian industry around the country. These friends have been instrumental in building my referral business as anyone looking for farms or developing one knows! How does it relate to your sales? My sales are a huge success because I know what works. My background gives me insight into the needs and requirements of facilities, so they are appropriate for the number of horses and the space they need. What is trending in the equestrian real estate market? As development rights have been sold for agricultural use only, quite a few owners built beautiful barns over the last 25 years, many with indoor rings. Riders are plentiful here throughout the winter, while the serious competitors are in Wellington or Ocala, Florida. Purchasing a property adjacent to such a reserve is always a great idea because it provides for both protection and wonderful amenities right at your doorstep. What is your involvement in the Hampton Classic? Each year, Brown Harris Stevens and I host the Pal-O-Mine riding program. It’s a fun-filled day for children and adults with disabilities. It means a lot to me to give back to this community, and I pride myself on being able to bring such enjoyment to their world.

But, as my career shifted to real estate, I have become more of a spectator rather than a worker behind the scenes. My twin sister’s daughter and in-laws still compete. Her brother-in-law Charlie Jacobs was second in last year’s Grand Prix, and sister-in-law Katie won numerous ribbons in the Amateur-Owner Hunters. For those reasons, I give moral support, especially to family members. Why are horses such an important part of the magic of the Hamptons? Horses have played a role in the Hamptons for decades even before the days of Jackie O. The estate sections have long supported some of our greatest Olympic riders. Being able to watch them in their own backyard at the Hampton Classic has been a yearly tradition since its inception. They were part of the culture here since the late 1600s and continue to ensure that we have a rural feel — a reprieve from hectic cities. It’s what helps make the Hamptons the Hamptons! THE EMERALD ISLE GREAT HOUSES & GARDENS By Joe Alexander

Joe Alexander is the travel editor and society columnist for Social Life Magazine. He focuses on culture, theater, movies, and food. Joe was born in New York City. His stories have been featured in numerous national magazines, including Haute Living. Joe lives in Manhattan and Southampton with his Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Cornelia and Webster.

SHEEN FALLS Sheen Falls Lodge is set amid green lawns and bright flower gardens in County Kerry, Ireland. An American flag was flapping out front to welcome us. Inside the five-star country lodge, a welcoming fire burned in the hearth beneath a massive set of moose antlers. This is Irish hospitality at its finest. The hotel is situated on 300 acres. Deer and other wildlife roam about the estate, which boasts water and mountain views. The five-star

amenities include fine dining, a world-class spa, and a long list of country pursuits, from falconry to hiking. The area was established in the 1600s, and by 1700 there was a small cottage at Sheen Falls, which was incorporated into the current lodge, built in the early 20th century. The distinctive arched stone bridge over the falls dates from 1777, and remains unchanged to this day.

KENMARE BAY The door of our suite opened to two walls of windows overlooking the falls. The view of the river rushing over rocks and under the ancient stone bridge was breathtaking. At the other side of the room was a terrace facing Kenmare Bay. Furnishings included a sumptuous plaid sofa with plump pillows and a tea table facing the river. The color palette was beige and green, with rose overtones, and the floral paintings were by noted local artist Christine Bowen.

HISTORICAL SITES The Lodge grounds are home to various historical sites, including St. Finian’s Church, ruins dating from 838 A.D. that were pillaged by Vikings, and the Famine Burial Plot, commemorating the Irish potato famine of the 1840s.

COUNTRY PURSUITS

Sheen Falls Lodge, Photography by Pawel Nowak

There are a multitude of activities, including horseback riding; clay pigeon shooting, archery, kayaking, tennis, bicycling, and river cruising. We tried falconry, which was thrilling. A falconer brought a van full of hawks and owls that flew around the hotel’s lawn, and we were able to handle them. A white owl and a grey one named Gandolf the Wizard were highlights of our trip. sheenfallslodge.ie Social Life

Lough Erne Resort

LOUGH ERNE RESORT GOLFER’S PARADISE G8 SUMMIT The Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen, Ireland, has a place in history, not only because of its ancient roots or that a great battle was fought on its lush grounds, but because of the gathering here of the leaders of eight countries, including Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin, Angela Merkel, François Hollande, and David Cameron, at the G8 Summit in 2013. Surrounding the lough (lake) are charming, turreted lodges. We stayed in a luxurious two-bedroom duplex that had its own living room and kitchen.

CATALINA RESTAURANT After a round on these world-renowned links, we dined in the resort’s elegant Catalina Restaurant under the direction of the chef Noel McMeel, an affable Irish gentleman who used to whip up delectable dishes at Le Cirque. Try the crab appetizer and the lamb “five ways.” lougherneresort.com

BLAKES OF THE HOLLOW After 18 holes, we went into the nearby town of Enniskillen for a pint at Blakes of the Hollow, which is not only one of the oldest untouched pubs in Ireland, it was also just voted the best pub in Northern Ireland. The pub boasts a door from the set of Game of Thrones, perfect for a selfie. blakesofthehollow.com

CAFÉ MERLOT PGA CHAMPIONSHIPS The main part of the resort is a castle with 52 rooms. It is surrounded by two world-class golf courses: The Faldo Course designed by the British pro Nick Faldo, a nine-time PGA tour winner, and Castle Hume, which has hosted ten Ulster PGA Championships. There is also a golf academy led by Lynn McCool, whom President Obama asked for help with his swing. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Right next door to Blakes is the town’s most charming and authentic restaurant, Café Merlot. It’s actually underground with dramatically vaulted ceilings. Try the sumo fries with spicy dips, the Peking duck that falls off the bone, and please order a pot of vegetables. These local jewels of peas, carrots, mushrooms, onions, and other delicious nuggets dripping in a succulent broth stole the night. cafemerlot.co.uk

TRAVELING TO MIAMI ART WEEK THE MEN OF MIAMI By Joe Alexander

CRISTIANO RONALDO, NEYMAR, AND NICK KORNILOFF “Everyone in the art world descends on Art Miami for this important cultural event. This is the bellwether for the art fair market in America, and it only gets stronger,” said Nick Korniloff, the director of Art Miami, which is the city’s original and longest running contemporary and modern art fair. Art Miami, along with its sister fair, CONTEXT, is set to move to a brand-new waterfront location in downtown Miami on December 5. “Every year the quality of works shown at Art Miami and CONTEXT are unparalleled, and this year will be better than ever,” said Korniloff, whose fairs attract over 75,000 people every year. The fairs have earned a reputation for bringing out serious collectors, art dealers, curators, advisors, and representatives from the world’s top museums. “It is time for us to create a new opportunity for our organization, our clients, and our community as we move both Art Miami and CONTEXT to one of the most prestigious waterfront locations in the city, the Resorts World Miami property, on Biscayne Bay,” said Korniloff. This year soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Lionel Messi, and Neymar have had their portraits displayed at Casa Clasico presented by Art Miami. Adrien Brody and Metallica’s Jason Newsted have shown paintings at Korniloff ’s fairs. Past exhibitors include ARCHEUS/POST-MODERN, Osborne Samuel, and VERTES. artmiamifair.com

ART MIAMI, CONTEXT, AQUA, AND WYNWOOD As a partner of Art Miami as well as its director and senior vice president, Nick Korniloff oversees the management and creative direction for Art Miami, CONTEXT, Aqua Art Miami, Art Wynwood, Art NY and CONTEXT NY, Palm Beach Modern + Contemporary, and Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco. Korniloff has over two decades of experience in art fair management and production. His continued commitment to create new opportunities for the international art community through the development of new art fairs and collaborative partnerships has attracted some of the most prestigious galleries, both in the contemporary and classical markets. He is known as a leader in the industry and has been touted as an expert in connecting dealers with new and affluent international collectors. Art & Auction Magazine acknowledged Korniloff in its Power List for his work in repositioning Art Miami. contextnyfair.com Nick Korniloff, Pamela Cohen, Adrien Brody.

WHISBE VANDAL GUMMY By Bennett Marcus

“WHAT IS BEAUTY?” The Vandal Gummy — a seven-foot tall gummy bear holding a Department of Corrections placard — recently installed in the lobby of 4 World Trade Center, has become an instant hit. “It’s insanely popular. It’s so wild,” says the artist, who is known as WhIsBe, for “What Is Beauty?” “I would have never thought I’d have a sculpture in the lobby of the World Trade Center if you had asked me a few years ago,” says the artist, who never shows his face in pictures. Since the installation, he’s been written up in Forbes, WWD and Business Insider, and was the subject of a video by Vice News. The notoriety came about after developer Larry Silverstein invited a group of street artists to work on a mural project on the vacant 69th floor of 4 WTC. “It’s super dope. I got to paint with my homies and had a great time,” WhIsBe says.

4 WORLD TRADE CENTER Silverstein’s idea proved successful; in addition to giving young artists coveted space, the mural helped rent the property. Negotiations for the lobby sculpture at 4 WTC followed. WhIsBe acted as his own agent, and the process taught him a lot about SocialLifeMagazine.com

public installations and corporate politics. “All of that transpired through the mural project and working with Silverstein himself,” says the 29-year-old.

ART MIAMI & CONTEXT “The opportunity at the World Trade Center, and what’s come from that just spiked my career in terms of momentum.” A New York native, WhIsBe grew up painting, studied at the School of Visual Arts, and, after a hiatus, turned to street art five years ago. He has now exhibited at art fairs, including Art New York and Art Southampton, had an installation at the New Museum, and his work is now in the collection of MOCO Museum Amsterdam. Next up, he is exhibiting at Art Miami and CONTEXT in December. He hopes to have one or more of his seven-foot bear sculptures at the entrance of the fair. “I’d like to have those there because I see the impact that they have as public installations.” WhIsBe whisbeworldwide.com

GOING TO MIAMI ART WORLD IT GIRLS By Joe Alexander

C

ollectors from around the world travel to Florida for Miami Art Week to see the art; go to the parties; and check out the stars, models, and billionaires the fairs attract from December 5 to 10. Every year the cognoscenti anoint a new “It girl” — one who has made waves during the art fairs in the United States and Europe. This year, two friends have emerged as the front runners for the title, but insiders are declaring it a tie between the glamorous Swiss gallerist and art historian Isabelle Bscher and the edgy American collector and entrepreneur Libby Mugrabi.

PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT LIBBIE MUGRABI “Basquiat is my favorite artist,” says the stylish collector Libbie Mugrabi. “His art is colorful and strong. The work has a very cool aspect to it.” Libbie has honed her taste in fine art by attending art shows and auctions. “My husband’s a dealer, so we live with a lot of art at home.” That is something of an understatement: her husband, David Mugrabi, along with his brother, Alberto, and their father, Jose, owns one of the world’s most valuable private art collections. It includes hundreds of works by Andy Warhol, George Condo, Damien Hirst, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

ART MIAMI & ART BASEL “It’s a very time consuming business,” says Libbie. There are so many art fairs, requiring travel around the world, including to Art Miami and Art Basel in the U.S., Switzerland, and Hong Kong. “Being married to an art dealer is a very social business.” Libbie counts many famous artists among her friends, and some, including Richard Prince, Enoc Perez, and Damien Hirst, have done portraits of her and her family. Libbie accompanies her husband on many of his art world travels, but has plenty to keep her busy on her own, including a gut renovation of a historic home on the Upper East Side.

TIGHT IN THE HAMPTONS Last summer, Libbie, who is an enterprising entrepreneur, and her sister, Mia Rowe, started a Hamptons medical spa called Tight, offering noninvasive beauty treatments like fillers and peels. Her brother-in-law, the noted Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Norman Rowe, performs the procedures. tightmedspa.com Libbie Mugrabi, Mia Rowe at 92Y An Artful Lunch

ISABELLE BSCHER GALERIE GMURZYNSKA By Joe Alexander

G

lamorous gallerist Isabelle Bscher will be orchestrating her family’s booth at Miami’s Art Basel from December 7 to 10, where she will also host a dinner for artists and collectors during the fairs. Bscher is planning something special, saying “We always try to surprise people, to do something different, something interesting.” Galerie Gmurzynska, with four locations in Switzerland, will present work by multiple artists, including Christo and Kazimir Malevich.

WOMAN-OWNED ART WORLD POWERHOUSE Bscher, an art historian with a master’s degree from Sotheby’s, is the third generation to run Galerie Gmurzynska, taking over from her mother and her grandmother, who founded it in 1965. The family built it into an art world powerhouse, representing Pablo Picasso, Donald Judd, Robert Indiana, and James Turrell as well as the architects Zaha Hadid and Richard Meier, the actor/painter Sylvester Stallone, and the designer/ photographer Karl Lagerfeld.

The Swiss gallery will also show rare pieces by Joan Miró and Fernand Léger. Each artist was selected because of his strong connection to the Windy City. In 1981, Miró struggled to find funding to erect his now-iconic sculpture Miró’s Chicago in the Loop. A 1931 Léger piece that Bscher will show is significant because that year marked the artist’s first trip to America, including a stay in Chicago. And in 1969 Christo famously wrapped Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art.

A SENSORY EXPERIENCE Antonio Monfreda, who has created exhibitions for Valentino and Fendi, and was a creative consultant for the Metropolitan Museum’s AngloMania exhibition, designed Galerie Gmurzynska’s Chicago booth. “He thinks looking at art is very intimate, so he wanted to create something that involves all senses,” says Bscher. He created curtains using special fabrics infused with custom scents from Santa Maria Novella for a fully sensory experience with the master works.

FUTURE EXHIBITIONS ART EXPO CHICAGO Before Isabelle heads to Florida, she will meet up with Christo, who will appear along with his work at her booth during EXPO Chicago, which will run from September 13 to 17. SocialLifeMagazine.com

Upcoming among the gallery’s four locations in Switzerland are exhibitions on Alexander Rodchenko and Roberto Matta, and one on photographer Wayne Maser. gmurzynska.com

CUBA LUXURY TIME TRAVEL By Anthony Giampetruzzi

Hotel Nacional de Cuba

T

here are few places in the world that capture our imagination like Cuba. A storied playground for well-heeled travelers during the first half of the last century, it is still manna for those who crave nightlife, music, art and one-of-a-kind booze. As part of his legacy, President Barack Obama helped make the country a little less impenetrable, which opened the floodgates for practically anyone with a heart of gold or other documented purpose to get to Havana and make merry with the locals. Today, under President Donald Trump, would-be pleasure seekers are cautioned to understand the newer travel rules. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. First things first: brace yourself. Everything you’ve heard about the country being trapped in a bygone era is true. Everything is, well, old. And much of it is falling apart. However, there is true elegance in the country’s decaying beauty, and a culture that is so passionate and proud, you almost can’t detect the underlying austerity. So, while we all wait for the rules to change, for the infrastructure to support a hotel worth its salt, and for a more competitive exchange rate, there is much to see and do.

STAYING IN HAVANA For a full Cuba experience, you’ll want to get out of Havana after 48 to 72 hours, but while you’re there, live it up with a stay at Hotel Nacional de Cuba. Not quite a five-star, this 85-year old grand dame was fashioned after The Breakers in West Palm Beach. Mobsters, movie stars, and moguls have slept here, and the hotel’s brush with the famous is well chronicled throughout. Nameplates of stars adorn the guestroom doors where they may have stayed. Several bars serve up choice Cuban libations, and I had the best mojito money can buy. Cohiba singles can be purchased on site. The rooms are enormous and, although a little dated, are comfortable and full of amenities. If you like gratis toiletries, you’ll love it here: bottle after bottle of just about every product you can imagine. A word to the wise: you must request the eighth floor: it’s the executive floor and by far the best. Outside, enjoy a sizable pool and roaming peacocks. Social Life

WHAT TO DO IN HAVANA Drink mojitos, smoke cigars, dance, and meander along the Melacón, the esplanade that stretches for about five miles. Of course, the country is well-known for its rum, tobacco, and arts scenes, so take them all in generously. Some must-visits include Jazz Club La Zorra y el Cuervo, where you will be overwhelmed by local Latin jazz artists, many of whom are college students with gifts from the gods. For dining, plan well ahead and make a reservation at La Guarida. No, this is not authentic Cuban fare (that’s something that’s nearly impossible to find), but it is exceptional. Located in a dingy part of town, this stunner has played host to dozens of celebrities, most recently providing the setting for a much-hooplaed birthday for Madonna. Less central is El Cocinero. Housed in a former vegetable oil factory, the restaurant is industrial chic, trendy, and more laid back than La Guarida. Spend hours here noshing on tapas, sipping outstanding libations, and listening to hip house music under the stars. The Tropicana? Yes, if you can manage through the 20-minute journey to get there, a couple of hours of largely similar music and dance, and a cover charge triple anything you’d pay in NYC. But if mid-century spectacle trips your trigger, you’ll probably be sad if you missed it. Whatever you do, set aside at least one full day and maybe much more to roam the historic Old Havana, where you’ll find outstanding architecture (much of which is being meticulously restored), history galore, and amazing galleries featuring every type of art imaginable. Don’t miss the Taller Experimental de Gráfica, Cuba’s premier printmaking studio. Cuba is known for its posters and printmaking, and this is where you’ll want to spend several hours observing the process, deciding which prints to purchase, and calculating the framing costs for when you return home with your haul.

GETTING OUT OF HAVANA The entire country is safe enough, and easily navigable. It’s also bigger than you think, so, if visiting for a week or less, an advisable add-on to Havana is the Vinales region. Marked by stunning vistas, this is where you’ll find the most treasured tobacco fields in the world. Tour one for the 411 on why that $50 cigar was worth it. Here, locals have caught on to Airbnb, and they take it seriously. Do your research, and find something with a view. Small, inexpensive restaurants abound, and, yes, this is where you’ll want to throw caution to the wind and enjoy the local grub. Budget in at least a day to visit one of the white sand beaches along the northwestern shore. Cayo Jutías is among the best, and, while you won’t want to spend the night locally (yeah . . . no), whiling away a day here is a welcome change to the hustle and bustle of Havana.

MATACHICA MAGIC A WEEKEND IN BELIZE By Anthony Giampetruzzi

W

ith all the talk about global warming, jetsetters with a sense of adventure (or should we say conscience) more and more are telling us that they are recalibrating their shortterm luxury travel plans. If world-class snorkeling and SCUBA are your bag, you’re well aware that the world’s most treasured reefs are becoming extinct. Time is slipping away for many of the natural treasures that enthusiasts rightly regard as some of the most important on the globe. You’ve likely seen photos of the Great Blue Hole. A diver’s paradise, this wonder is located next to Lighthouse Reef, about 50 miles off the coast of Belize. A little closer to shore is one of the most important, and last thriving (yet endangered) barrier reefs in the world. Belize, the jumping-off point for these amazing natural wonders as well as countless picturesque cays, is only a few hours from New York City, and an even shorter trip if you’re travelling

from a more southern region. And, yes, it’s possible to find luxury in the area. Case in point: Matachica Resort & Spa. Set on a secluded stretch of natural white-sand beach facing the world’s second-largest barrier reef, Matachica offers a choice of 31 intimate villas, including 30 single casitas and one two-bedroom villa. Vibrantly colored and exotic with thatched roofs, the villas are uniquely decorated with hints of Central American motifs and original art collected from around the world. The villas are spacious, privately located away from each other, and include distinctive features. A standout for us was the service. From the moment our plane landed at the airport in Belize, no need went unmatched. From very personal transfers, to the welcome cocktail, the Matachica staff ensure that your experience is unlike any other. Arriving at Matachica, you’d swear that you had landed at Bora Bora: turquoise water and a long stretch of hovering Social Life

EXCLUSIVE ENCLAVE IN THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS SCRUB ISLAND RESORT & SPA OUTSHINES ITS NEIGHBORS WITH NATURAL LUXURY By Blaire Bass

P

ristine secluded beaches, crystal clear waters, culinary delights . . . what more could you ask for? Surrounded by shallow coral reefs, white-sand beaches and a 55-foot deep water slip marina, Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina brings nature and luxury to spectacular heights. A serene 230-acre haven, just a mile and a half off the eastern coast of Tortola, the resort is covered with hills of thick vegetation and edged with unspoiled beaches, an unparalleled experience in a natural tropical paradise. Stay in one of 52 cozy guest rooms outfitted in dark hardwoods and understated Caribbean West Indies décor. Villas at the top of the hill provide sweeping views of the surrounding islands. Ocean suites are huge — almost 1,000 square feet — and offer gourmet kitchens, verandas, living space, and enormous bathrooms. Hillside villas range from 3,000 to 6,000 square feet and are available for rent or for purchase. They’re perfect for a family or groups of friends.

What to do on a small island? The sky is the limit! Awaken your sense of wonder. Dive historic wrecks or snorkel the reefs. Go island hopping or deep-sea fishing. Learn to sail or captain your own kayak. Our tip: spend the day on the ultraprivate and quiet North Beach to sunbathe in absolute seclusion. Each lounge section is hidden by trees, which means no neighbors can see you. Trés romantic. Swim out to the coves and lagoons that are home to rare sea life such as the yellow frogfish and golden-faced coney. Splash around and get sun-kissed at the multi-tiered lagoonstyle pool. Or for total relaxation, spend a day at the spectacular Ixora Spa. We loved the Ayurvedic “Balance Me” massage. It began with a heavenly herbal wrap, followed by a warm poultice massage and harmonizing Shirodhara treatment. Talk about rest and restoration — this was it! Legend has it that the island’s name came from pirates who Social Life

safari in Tanzania is only complete with a trip to the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater. The natural wonder was created when a volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago. The world-famous site offers a chance to view some of the densest mammal populations in Africa. To travel to the crater, we flew on Tanzania’s premier airline, Coastal Aviation, from Kilimanjaro to Lake Manyara. A friendly driver with Foot on Earth Adventure greeted us at the airstrip and drove us to the Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge. The gorgeous, all-inclusive resort features 20 spacious private log cabins set among perfectly manicured gardens filled with palm trees, hibiscus, and roses reaching for the sky. Our luxuriously appointed private cabin included a large bedroom, living room, fireplace, and terrace overlooking the expansive hillside. For meals, we enjoyed the delicious Accacia Restaurant, which featured a delightful outdoor terrace. One evening, we savored an elegant meal by the pool under a star-filled sky. In the afternoons, we relaxed at the pristine pool

and visited the Earth & Rain Spa, where we had the best massages of our lives. Throughout our stay, the hotel’s staff led by its gracious resort manager, Manoj Shah, provided first-class service. For our much anticipated game drive, Malicky Adam, our wonderful private guide with Foot on Earth Adventure, drove us to the crater floor where we saw herds of elephants, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, lions, and flamingos. Nearby the crater is the Olduvai Gorge, the symbolic birth place of mankind. In 1929, Louis Leakey mounted an expedition there and discovered hundreds of fossilized bones and stone tools dating back millions of years. Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge is part of the highly respected Neptune Hotels, a true East Africa brand. The company operates seven fabulous hotels in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zanzibar. Its motto is, “We promise African memories.” The brand certainly delivers as we will always remember the remarkable time spent at its exquisite property while exploring one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders. SWEET GLAZED, CEDAR PLANK SALMON Salmon, particularly wild caught, is one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. As far as fish goes, it’s also has one of the most wellknown unmistakable flavors. When looking for heart healthy options, packed full of Omega 3s, salmon is a protein powerhouse! But, let’s face it, while eating salmon may help you live longer, it’s the flavor that gets us — and our guests — every time.

Sweet Glazed, Cedar Plank Salmon Ingredients: 1 lb wild salmon fillet 4 tsp light brown sugar (not packed) 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp salt Juice of half lemon Lemon slices for garnish Sesame for garnish Instructions: Soak cedar plank in water for at least an hour. Heat the grill to medium-high. Push coals to one side or turn off one side to create a place to cook salmon with indirect heat. Close the lid and let the grill get hot. Combine the light brown sugar, garlic, onion, ginger, salt, and juice of half a lemon. Rub on the top side of the salmon fillet and add lemon slices just before placing on the grill. Place salmon on cedar plank and cook with direct heat to start, about 3 to 5 minutes. The plank may start to smoke and begin to char on the edges. Be sure to keep an eye on it — you don’t want your salmon to catch fire and burn! Move the plank onto indirect heat, close the lid, and grill 10 to 12 minutes until the salmon is cooked through. Remove plank from grill. You can serve it right on the cedar plank if the edges are not too charred and are cool to the touch. Garnish with sesame. Social Life

SUMMER 2017 — SAVORING THE SUMMARY By Sharon Roth

W

ith summer quickly drawing to a close, it is time to stop time . . . and toast the last few amber sunrises and harvest moon sunsets — not to mention our fabulous eclipse on the 21st. And visit the perfect East End savory spots for our last hurrah, saying thank you for a wonderful summer 2017. After morning yoga at Mandala, let’s head to Montauk for lunch. Lounging at the Beach Club at Gurney’s Montauk, sip on the spicy Afternoon Heat, deliciously crafted from tequila, watermelon, jalapeno, and citrus — and perfectly paired with the divine tequila-glazed shrimp skewers with shishito peppers and charred corn. This drink was an excellent surprise, a refreshing balance of tart, salt, and fruit that renders it an ideal beach libation (not to mention it’s pretty mauve color). Take a last Montauk beach walk, put your toes in the sand and sample Le Grand Fizz, a revitalizing concoction of Grey Goose, StGermain, lime, and sparking water, while dining on the quinoa salad and lobster roll. For the grand finale? Take a dip in the waves and try the divine pulled pork sandwich with housemade barbeque sauce, while raising a glass of the Montauk watermelon ale to toast the last surfside feasts of summer 2017. Après-beach, on to the Maidstone to warm up by the fire and admire the eclectic photography (check out Marilyn Monroe above the fireplace) beautifully framed by the hunter green walls and classic white trim . . . a striking fusion of the old and the new. What could be better for a late summer afternoon than the Maidstone’s signature Watermelon Mule, with it’s raspberry jewel tones and fashioned from vodka, lime,

agave, Regata ginger beer — and of course, watermelon — served delectably chilled in Art Deco copper mugs. For the next round, order the summer sangria, a tasty blend of Rosé, strawberry, citrus, and mint, and top it all off with the bubbly Cremant de Limoux Brut Rosé. For those of us who are still hungry (me), sample the lentil burger with heirloom tomato, avocado, tahini, and watercress; the Maidstone salad, a surprisingly sumptuous concoction of kale, quinoa, and summer corn; and the cauliflower rice bowl, an ambrosial yet shockingly healthy creation of cauliflower, quinoa, turkey chorizo, roasted sweet potatoes, and poached egg. A quick trip to Sunset Beach for oysters and the Channing Daughters Sunset Beach Rosé and the Aperol sorbet. Go for a last paddleboard ride and beachside massage while you are at it . . . we will all be in sweaters and mittens soon enough. And let’s finish our day at the Beacon, a Hamptons sunset destination that prizes quality in food and service along with its stunning natural waterside ambiance. With a food and drink menu that is a constantly evolving farm-to-table tribute to the East End, along with its incomparable ruby sunset views that are never the same twice, Beacon is the natural culmination of the day. Order a Beacon’s blood orange Margarita or Venetian spritzer with the summer watermelon salad, lobster rigatoni, and halibut, and happily roll on home. Finally? Open your favorite bottle of North or South Fork vino, raise your glass, and toast to summer 2017! Now on to fall and delicious reds. See you in ten months. Social Life

RISING STAR XENIA GHALI TOPS THE MUSIC CHARTS By Blaire Bass

A

fter working with industry heavyweights like Pitbull and Wyclef Jean, the Greek artist Xenia Ghali has taken the dance music scene by storm. A DJ, producer, songwriter, and classically trained musician, Xenia’s hit Under These Lights reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart and branded Xenia as the next up-and-coming music star. Both an enigmatic and dynamic figure, Xenia is a DJ whose sets combine house and pulsating beats, bringing together shimmering synth melodies and vintage groove-laden rhythms for a unique brand of modern electronic dance music. Social Life sat down with Xenia to learn more about what drove her to the top of the charts. Rumor has it you’re the next big talent in music. What is your key to success? There’s a lot of talent in the music industry and so many musicians, producers, artists, and DJs that I admire. I believe very strongly that hard work, commitment, teamwork, and persistence lead to any type of success. What inspired you to get into the music business? At five years old, I started learning to play classical piano and flute. At 15, I wrote songs and was the lead guitarist in my high school band. That was when I realized writing music and composing were my passions. While I was working on my bachelor’s degree in the UK I explored the world of electronic based music, with an emphasis on house. I decided to teach myself how to mix on turntables and vinyl records, and I had my first show at the Ministry of Sound in London. After I completed my degree, I moved to New York to get my master’s, and this is where I landed in the music scene as a music producer, a DJ, and an artist.

How would you describe the type or genre of the music you produce? I had the honor of receiving my second No. 1 Billboard Dance Club Songs chart record with my latest single, Places. The song is dancebased, very melodic, groovy with some hints of house and pop. Lyrically, it is quite open to interpretation and fun, which is something I always like doing in the music I release. My goal is always for people to relate to it based on their own personal experiences. Apparently your videos are off-the-charts cool. Can you describe them to us in a few words? Music videos are incredibly important to me, and I am hands-on involved in the pre-production stage, the shooting, and in the postproduction stage. I’ve creatively directed all of my music videos, and I always strive for an original and unique result by combining intensity, energy, and fashion in the video. How have your Greek roots influenced your music? Being raised in Greece has definitely had an impact on my music. Dance and house music are a big part of European culture, and I grew up around it. Even though I have explored and studied various genres of music, dance music has always been very close to my heart. Xenia Ghali xeniaghali.com Social Life

CAROLYN POMERANZ DIARIES OF A BASEBALL WIFE

T

aco Tuesdays and weekends in wine country . . . that’s how every good love story begins, right? Well, maybe not quite, but that’s how it started for power couple Carolyn Esserman and Drew Pomeranz, a pitcher with the San Diego Padres at the time. Tacos with friends quickly led to sushi for two, which, in turn, led to a romantic getaway in Napa. With baseball season in full gear, focusing on the game and avoiding distraction placed high on Drew’s list of things to do. But fortunately for this love story, so did wooing Carolyn. A short time later on their first vacation together, Drew proposed. While Carolyn got to work planning their dream wedding in Hawaii, Drew received word of his trade from the Padres to the Boston Red Sox. The very next day Drew boarded a plane and set out for his new life. Carolyn found herself with a week to pack up their home and move to Boston, where she didn’t know anyone. It’s now three quarters through Drew’s second season with the Red Sox and Carolyn has eased effortlessly into the life of a baseball wife. So what does routine look like for these two? “We wake up, eat breakfast — either room service or we’ll go out. We love finding the coolest and trendiest spots in whatever city we’re in. Drew usually heads to the field around noon, so I have extra time to SocialLifeMagazine.com

explore. If I have friends there, I’ll reconnect with them. Since I’m constantly traveling and want to maintain my fitness, I’ll also try to fit in a workout class. By then it’s time to get ready for game time. After the game we’ll go out to eat pretty late, around 11 or midnight with other players and their wives. Then we’ll do it again the next day or travel to the next city.” When Drew has home games, the routine changes a bit. Carolyn and the other Red Sox wives participate in a variety of charity events throughout the season, allowing them to “join and interact with the community in a positive way,” she said. Apart from her Hope, Love, and Dreams Foundation in Nicaragua, which serves to provide funding for both an orphanage and a children’s hospital, Carolyn recently helped to plan a fashion show in which the Red Sox wives modeled to raise money for families of children battling cancer. “Drew is very supportive of my dreams and passions,” Carolyn commented. From the demanding hours of baseball season, to living on the go, the life of a baseball wife isn’t for everyone, but Carolyn couldn’t imagine her life any differently. Her travels with Drew for away games give her plenty of material for her passion project, her blog CarolynSaidIDrew.com and she keeps her instagram followers entertained with behind-the-scenes-photos on the road. “Go with the flow, and when you have time together really take advantage of that time, and show that you care about each other because that time is precious. Life moves pretty quickly, so you have to cherish the positive events and all of the things we are fortunate to do and have.” Follow her travels at @CarolynPomeranz

hen Maxwell Lessing founded Lessing’s Hospitality in 1890, he aimed to be in the forefront of innovation. He didn’t know that he’d end up making history by building the foundation of what has become a diverse hospitality group of restaurants and catering. Maxwell responded to the explosion of the urban worker population in the 1890s by opening the first convenient lunch counter in New York’s financial district. By the 1920s, Lessing’s lunch counters were in at least 20 locations in NYC, including the iconic Woolworth Building. Lessing’s also became the first lunch counter in Manhattan to serve what at the time was a brand-new beverage: Coke. Today, Lessing’s, Inc. is one of the most recognized names in the hospitality industry. Dedicated to innovation, sustainability, and nutrition, the brand spans over 100-plus locations, including corporate dining, educational institutions, private and public clubs, vending accounts, and almost one dozen full-service restaurants. PARTY RENTAL LTD. ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR EVENT ESSENTIALS By Serena Rothchild

P

arty Rental Ltd., founded by Michael and the late Sunny Halperin in 1970, began as a secondary line of business to Oprandy’s Liquor Store in Englewood, NJ. The business is an American success story. At the time, they were a tiny operation and simply rented tables, chairs, and glasses to the store’s customers. Less than two years later they expanded into a garage behind the store with 100 wooden chairs, one full-set style of china, 50 tables, and other party necessities. The business grew so fast that in 1980 they moved in to a 10,000-squarefoot facility. From there, they expanded rapidly as they sealed deals in NYC, D.C., the Hamptons, Philadelphia, and Connecticut, eventually relocating to their 350,000-square-foot warehouse in Teterboro, NJ. Party Rental now carries 85,000 chairs, 950,000 pieces of chinaware, 18,000 tables, a furniture collection, and thousands of other items to help clients bring their event visions to life. The company has a wide variety of products in quantities that can accommodate events of any size, whether it’s an intimate dinner for two or cocktails for 2,000. Social Life sat down with Alan Gottlich, the executive vice president, to learn about the booming business and glimpse into the world of party rentals. How do you tailor your services to help clients reach their desired event space? We ask lots of questions and really listen to our clients’ needs, desires, strengths, and challenges. Whether we’re working with a caterer who needs a linen recommendation, designers who aren’t sure how many glasses to order, or clients who have never planned an event before, we take the time to get to know them and their events so we can identify places where we can help. MARK DVORNIK BUILDING A LEGACY By Christine Montanti

T

housands of miles from New York City, the former Executive Vice President at Paramount Pictures, Mark Dvornik, speaks live on China Network TV while streaming live to 500 million users on SinaWeibo. Dvornik, the Executive Producer for the American College Football New Year’s Bowl, is enamored with the virtues of American football, and he is encouraging the Chinese people to learn more about it and to take part in this exciting pastime. Dvornik’s commanding, passionate voice, which has led entertainment’s most lucrative sales team, excites and engages live audiences. His extraordinary speech highlighted China’s history and inspires the Chinese to write a new chapter featuring American football. In the entertainment industry, Dvornik is known for his twentyone years of incomparable work at Paramount Pictures. During his employment at Paramount, Dvornik was responsible for selling the most iconic shows to TV stations such as I Love Lucy, Andy Griffith, Little House on the Prairie, Happy Days, Cheers, Frasier, and countless others. Some of these extraordinary TV shows had over 250 episodes. In addition, Dvornik distributed such noteworthy classic movies as Forrest Gump, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Ten Commandments, Indiana Jones, The Godfather, Star Trek and many more. Dvornik was responsible for leading a sales team that was so successful it managed to generate a quarter of a billion dollars annually, with the total amount of revenue raised during Dvornik’s tenure at Paramount representing over 1.5 billion dollars. “A couple of things that I love about my career are being able to mentor and inspire executives to be leaders and to provide great entertainment programming for viewers to enjoy,” explains Dvornik. “I believe when you are responsible for legacy brands you need to treat it with the same excellence as the people who created it.” When Dvornik’s tenure at Paramount ended, he started traveling to China with Joe Wang, an American coach whose parents were from China and had a dream of taking American football there. “In China, the American football is referred to as the olive ball because of

its shape,” Dvornik explains. “The Chinese people love Americans, and if we can engage them with American football, then maybe we will find our cultures will have more in common.” As American college football kicks off the fall 2017 season, it is beginning to take root at universities throughout China. “It’s not uncommon to see a group of young men with coaches shouting plays and giving signals as they engage in our American pastime,” says Dvornik. The first New Year’s Bowl was played in February in Bao’an Stadium, in Shenzhen, China. Because there weren’t any blimps or cable systems to create aerial coverage, Dvornik had to improvise. He sought out a Chinese drone company and after exhaustive planning and flawless execution by the team, the live event provided a historic first in broadcast television history. Dvornik pushed the envelope of American football and sports coverage. He orchestrated a fleet of drones which were airborne the entire game and during the halftime concert. The fleet of drones captured angles and shots never before executed for any live sporting event. If it weren’t for the pioneers, like Dvornik and Wang, there might not be American college football expanding behind the Great Wall. This unlikely Chinese/ Slovenian-American duo is currently building a legacy. LinkedIn: Mark Dvornik Social Life

THE HEBREW HAMMER A FAST AND FURIOUS JEWISH BOXER

C

letus Seldin, a fast and furious Jewish boxer who was coined the “Hebrew Hammer,” has shown great promise since he launched his professional boxing career. The welterweight, who averages a 143-pound weigh-in, remains undefeated at 19-0. Seldin was born in September 1986, in East Yaphank, Long Island. His father, Harry, was nicknamed “the Iron Man.” Seldin’s grandfather Lee owned a Brooklyn motorcycle club, the Dragons, during the 1950s and was known around town as a strongman. “My grandfather was a tough Jewish kid. You never looked him in the eye without him giving you trouble,” said Seldin in an interview with the online Jewish newspaper, The Algemeiner. “I’m the same height, same build as him; I definitely inherited his gift,” added Cletus in a heavy and endearing New York accent. Cletus is named after Clete Boyer, an exYankee third baseman and a friend of his grandparents. The rare name often confuses people. Strangers usually expect a Southerner when they meet him for the first time. “I’m the only person not from the South named Cletus,” he told The Algemeiner. Now turning 31 in September, Seldin started boxing in his early twenties, a late start for a boxing career. “Some kids start fighting at eight years old,” said Cletus. “I played three sports in high school . . . As soon as it was over, I started working, but I always wanted to be a professional athlete.” To help accomplish that goal, Cletus has surrounded himself with an all-star management team, most of whom are Jewish, too. “My brother graduated from Columbia in nutrition, so he has me covered in the food department, and my trainer, Pete Brodsky, is also Jewish, He’s a boxing guru. At one point he trained over twenty pro fighters at one gym,” said Cletus, adding, “my manager is also Jewish.” info@cletusseldin.com SocialLifeMagazine.com

SHANNON SANZONE FASHION PR GURU USES HER SKILLS TO GIVE BACK WHERE IT’S NEEDED MOST By Frances Gormley

S

hannon Sanzone, founder of Palermo PR, a boutique public relations firm that focuses on brand strategy and strategic partnerships, caters to the fashion, luxury, lifestyle, and entertainment landscapes. Her first foray in PR began in 2000, as an in-house PR associate for some of the world’s largest fashion brands. Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, and Armani Exchange are some of the names on her resume. After 14 years of building an enormous media and fashion network, “there is no one better at navigating the media,” says one of her corporate clients.

A DREAM Shannon has a unique approach to the way her company does business. She provides public relations and branding services to her clients and, at the same time, is a liaison between artisans from impoverished communities and the fashion industry. This is a win-win for all: what is a generous price for labor or goods in an impoverished community is also an affordable price for a young designer with limited resources. Shannon has a BFA in fashion design and two collections to her credit. Artisanry, sourcing, production, and business development are all skills Shannon has mastered throughout her career. As Shannon continues to grow Palermo PR, she is also growing her business interests in the realm of humanitarian need. She is assisting artisans with the production and sourcing of their goods from areas of the world that can offer talented workers who are in dire need of being lifted out of poverty.

with leather and leather hand tools, pattern drafting, local sourcing, costing, and everyday business skills. Shannon arranged for a local shoe factory to donate leather scraps. The shoe factory, Nisolo, is an American luxury shoe company that shares Shannon’s values for giving back and sustainability. After a month, the women had learned new and useful skills. They made 55 handcrafted bracelets from the leather scraps that had been donated, and the quality of their work was impeccable.

SUSTAINABILITY When Shannon paid the women for their skillful work, they cried. And so did she. These women had no opportunity for employment before Shannon arrived. Being paid — a Fair Trade deal — for their efforts was a new and moving experience for them, and, according to their standard of living, Shannon’s wages were a windfall. More important, Shannon hopes to recommend these workers, and others in similar communities so that they can build on their skills to provide services and products to the clients of Palermo PR.

AN EXAMPLAR

JUST A BEGINNING

Shannon has already begun. Last fall, she connected with a new company, Venture with Impact, which, in turn, arranged for her to work in Peru for the entire month of June 2017, under the auspices of Vive Peru, an NGO in Alto Salaverry, a 40-minute ride from Trujillo to extreme poverty. Shannon designed her own sustainable program, teaching indigenous women embroidery, how to work

Shannon is already in partnership with other NGOs so that she can continue to teach women via sustainable income programs. And with her PR background, we expect to see more of these projects being publicized soon. palermopr.com Social Life

ANGELO DAVID THE VERA WANG OF COUTURE HAIR

Photography by Tom Concordia

By Lizabeth Zindel

A

ngelo David Pisacreta, the creative director of Angelo David salon, is one of the most coveted stylists and wig masters in New York City. He has a reputation for creating the wow factor with fully customized wigs, couture hair extensions, hairpieces, toppers, clip-ins, ponytails, fillers, and bangs — all of which address specific thinning-hair challenges. Angelo has also found a niche within the wig-making industry, which is experiencing a resurgence. According to a recent New York Times article, the current demand for wigs is as high as it was in their early ’70s heyday. All of Angelo’s wigs, extensions, and additions are made of 100% human hair and are designed on-site to match the client’s unique hair texture, type, and color. He has turned wig-making into an art form, as well as a solution to a variety of hair-loss challenges. He also works closely with cancer survivors and women undergoing chemotherapy, as well as clients who have hair loss from other causes. These causes may include genetics, pregnancy, medical issues, stress, unhealthy lifestyles, and mechanical hair stress caused by styling/pulling the hair too tight. He has a natural talent for connecting with his clients, who may feel shame or sadness because of their hair loss. Angelo’s

commitment to making his clients feel good is the reason he has a special name for his consultation rooms. “I call them the dream rooms because they are where women come to talk about their dreams for their hair,” he says. After listening to his clients’ particular needs (both men and women flock to the salon), Angelo works with each one to develop the perfect hair solution. To support the maintenance of healthy hair, Angelo has designed a range of products, including HairDetox vitamins and a hairbrush line made specifically for use on hair extensions, hair additions, and hairpieces. He has also created his own line of VOL volumizing shampoo, conditioning spray, and the newest addition, a dry shampoo (Vol Dry). “Hair extensions and hair pieces are part of our culture and our industry now,” he says. “They are no longer a secret. They are everyday hair wear.” Angelo David Salon 420 Madison Avenue angelodavid.com 212.883.6620 Social Life

MELINDA FARINA THE BEAUTY BROKER By Sandra Bloom

M

elinda Farina, otherwise known in the health and beauty industry as The Beauty Broker, has been matchmaking patients with the surgeons and top aesthetic specialists for the past 16 years. Social Life caught up with The Beauty Broker to get to know a bit more about her… What made you decide to be a beauty broker? I grew up in the beauty industry and I’ve worked in every aspect of a dental and medical practice. Through the years I learned that there was a major void in the industry. For starters there is a lot of smoke in mirrors within the marketing and advertising of aesthetic procedures, innovations, and technologies. Sometimes, social media makes it more difficult for patients to find the right solutions. Patients at times seem to be extremely confused and don’t know how to vet the right niche surgeons for their needs. Working with and mentored by top specialists, I would always quietly sit in on their meetings and listen to the most brilliant board certified aesthetic professionals in the world speak and present cases. Once I started sharing my knowledge with my friends and making spot-on recommendations, it became a domino effect of referrals. I realized that patient education and streamlining the selection process was something that was truly needed in our industry. Who needs you most? Anyone with questions about aesthetic medicine. Patients looking for a procedure but feel completely overwhelmed with the options. Patients who have consistently gone in for procedures and have not achieved their desired results. Patients who have had botched surgery or have been taken advantage of by unethical doctors. Patients that only want the best. What’s the most rewarding aspect of what you do? Knowing that I’m really truly educating a patient and putting them in the hands of a quality practitioner who is going to make it his or her business to deliver the most natural aesthetic results. My clients never look “done.” Doctors know my expectations when I’m bringing them a patient and they know if I am referring a patient to them it is because I honestly feel they are the best at that one specific procedure. They consistently take pride in proving just that. Aging and sometimes unfortunate genes can take a toll on a patient’s self esteem, confidence, and overall attitude. I am empathetic to this. I’ve always been the girl who wants to truly help lift others up. SocialLifeMagazine.com

NANCY CHEMTOB

CHEF ADAM WOLDMAN

CELEBRITY DIVORCE LAWYER

BRODY’S CATERING & EVENTS

By Bennet Marcus

By Nicole Clarke

TORY BURCH & BOBBY FLAY Nancy Chemtob has long been the go-to lawyer for the famous and the powerful seeking divorces on the East Coast. Tory Burch, Annette Lauer, Star Jones, Diandra Douglas, Bobby Flay, and Tiki Barber’s ex-wife Ginny Cha have all sought her counsel. And now, Chemtob has become the go-to lawyer for same-sex couples seeking divorce and fighting over child custody and money. Chemtob handled New York’s first-ever same-sex divorce case for a couple who had married in Massachusetts, and got New York State to recognize out-of-state divorce. In a recent high-profile same-sex case, Gunn vs Hamilton, Chemtob fought to win shared custody of the unmarried couple’s adopted son for her client, Kelly Gunn. The case has been referred to as “2017’s Kramer vs Kramer,” and helped redefine the idea of parenthood in New York.

THE NEW YORKER Despite having been featured in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Good Morning America, and the Today show during her 24 years in practice, Chemtob was amazed to be included in a 14-page New Yorker article about this groundbreaking Gunn vs. Hamilton case. “The response to that was unbelievable,” she says. “Our reputation from this case — the first case — is that we’re flexible; we’ll do what we need to do; we’ll make law.” Ironically, her same-sex clients are not interested in the fact that they’re breaking new legal ground. “The two moms sit in there arguing about the kid, about money,” she says. “So we’re making legal precedent, and they’re, you know, just having a regular divorce.” cmfesq.com

dam Woldman is the executive chef of Brody’s Catering & Events, which is the go-to catering company for some of NYC’s top corporations, including Conde Nast, HBO, Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and Chase. Woldman graduated from the culinary program at Los Angeles Trade Tech and then worked with the-award-winning chef Nancy Silverton at Wolfgang Puck. “Her teaching at our restaurant was an experience I’ll never forget,” he remembers. Woldman fell in love with the fast-paced atmosphere: “I love the catering aspect of the culinary industry because every day is different.” A great executive chef will emphasize the importance of organization in the kitchen. He says, “If you’re not organized in this industry you’re a fish dead in the water.”

BREAKFAST, LUNCH, & DINNER In 2016, Woldman opened Brody’s Catering & Events at 125 Fulton Street. A well-rounded chef who masters a list of different cuisines is hard to come by in the catering industry. His team of 10 seasoned chefs and customer-service specialists has decades of experience and will make your event an experience to remember, including breakfasts, lunch meetings, happy hours, cocktail receptions, and dinners. Woldman takes pride in Brody’s uniqueness among catering companies. “Our competitors mass produce their products. We don’t do that,” he says. Most companies won’t let clients substitute or make changes to their menus. “We can go off our menu to please the client. Which is what I love to do.” Brody’s Catering & Events brodyscatering.com Social Life

MARK FLEISCHMAN

COSMETIC MOGUL & JEWELER

INSIDE STUDIO 54

By Bennet Marcus

By Bennett Marcus

ery few people are lucky enough to turn their avocation into a business, and Peter Thomas Roth has done it twice, first with his namesake skincare line, and more recently with his fine jewelry.

“Can Studio 54 Be Born Again?” blared a New York magazine cover from September 1981, chronicling the reopening festivities of the legendary nightclub that had been shuttered after its owners were convicted of tax evasion. Mark Fleischman, an entrepreneur who bought the infamous hot spot from its founders, Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell, thought so. The article described the glittering crowd of thousands waiting for hours, in the rain, while the doorman, with all the power, “glowed.”

PETER THOMAS ROTH

SKINCARE VISIONARY While working in his father’s jewelry factory as a young Wharton grad, Roth spent evenings creating skincare formulas because he had always been plagued with skin problems. “I was always going to the dermatologist. I was always getting facials. I had very active acne, so I just dived into it,” Roth says. In 1993, he launched Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care, producing its own anti-aging and anti-acne products in the U.S. It quickly became popular at luxury spas, some owned by Marriott. When the Sephora beauty chain arrived in the U.S., they stocked the entire line, and it is still in every store now. Later came QVC, the cosmetics chain Ultra, and now the products are in all Hilton Hotel rooms in 80 countries. peterthomasroth.com

Mick Jagger: Champagne Swilling Debauchery People magazine reported that the street was closed due to the clog of limos, while celebs like Jacqueline Bisset, Bjorn Borg, and Cheryl Tiegs slipped in the back door. Fleischman was right, the place roared back to life, and he was in the middle of all the cocaine sniffing, Champagne swilling debauchery, and he recounts all the juicy details in his upcoming book, Inside Studio 54, out September 19. In the book, you’ll find Mick Jagger befriending a young woman; Rick James entertaining in the ladies room; David Bowie hanging in Fleischman’s office; Michael Jackson taking refuge from the crowd in the DJ booth; and Barbara Walters co-hosting Roy Cohn’s birthday party.

RIBBON & REED COLLECTION Roth, who lives in New York City with his two teenage sons, Ryan and Brendan, spent his spare time dabbling in jewelry design for fun. His Ribbon & Reed collection, inspired by works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he spent many youthful hours, debuted on QVC in 2016. In gold and silver, the line consists of classic, simple, modern pieces that will still look good in 20 years. “That was the goal, to just do clean and modern with a little kick of the past,” says Roth. peterthomasrothjewelrycom SocialLifeMagazine.com

Alec Baldwin & The Rubber Room Alec Baldwin, who worked at the club as a busboy when he was a struggling actor, quit because the sexual antics in the club’s infamous “Rubber Room” left him “perpetually horny.” Risks are involved in running the world’s biggest party, and Fleischman became hooked on drugs, alcohol, and wild sex. He recovered at Mexico’s health spa Rancho La Puerta after the Betty Ford Center didn’t work for him. indiebound.org

YES ART

PATRON OF PASTELS

By Bennett Marcus

By Nicole Clarke

SLICES OF MAINE The painter Robert Cenedella, who lives and works in NYC, is spending his summer on an island in Maine with no electricity or running water. His family has owned the 40-acre Burying Island for nearly 100 years. “This is where I recharge and think of new ideas. “You feel like you’re in a different country when you are up here,“ he said. While here, he paints without an easel, nailing his long and narrow canvases onto trees. He paints scenes from daily island life, including stone walls, a log cabin, fallen trees, and the rugged shoreline. The critically acclaimed series is called Slices of Maine.

THE TOURIST Cenedella is best known for his satirical work. The L.L. Bean catalog once featured his painting The Tourist on its cover. It humorously showed a giant lobster sitting at a table with a steamed tourist on the plate. His show Yes Art, in the 1960s was a spoof of Pop Art: he threw freshly boiled spaghetti onto a canvas, and this got him more publicity than any other artist at the time, including Andy Warhol.

POLITICAL ART Cenedella also creates controversial political art that has made headlines around the country. “Today, when the critics say ‘I’m the most widely written about unknown American artist, unfortunately it’s still true,” laughed the artist. Robert Cenedella rcenedellagallery.com

ianne B. Bernhard lives art in the tradition of Robert Henri, a leader of the Ashcan School of American Realism. She shares his philosophy that art can be a powerful voice for impacting anything. Art is life, and life is art: they can be one and the same, providing a joyous experience of the universe. Dianne is an accomplished painter, teacher, arts advocate, and devoted patron. Her background as an art educator gave her deep insights into the needs of artists and inspired her to establish the Art Spirit Foundation, an institution committed to the work of living artists. Through Art Spirit’s programs, monetary awards, medals, publishing, and films, she continues to advocate for the arts, nurture the renaissance of the pastel medium as well as create awareness that artists should attain the rewards of great art during their lifetime. Dianne recently served as the president of The National Arts Club and its director of fine arts. The club’s critically acclaimed programming has boosted membership. “We have attracted a younger crowd and brought in more art-minded people,” said Bernhard. She currently serves as the first vice president of the Pastel Society of America. Dianne received formal training in art history and business at the University of Houston and Yale University, and in interior design at the New York School of Interior Design. She currently resides in Connecticut and New York, where she continues her commitment to promote the arts and create platforms for art and artists of all mediums. ELITE PARTIES, GALAS & PRIVATE EVENTS CALL FOR THE BEST IN THE SECURITY BUSINESS By Blaire Bass

I

f you’ve ever been to a gala event in the Hamptons, chances are you’ve never questioned your safety or security. Someone else has, though. Founded in 2007 by Deana Wilson, Wilson & Associates Security Consulting, LLC, is a labor of love. When Deana’s husband, William, was appointed chief of police for Southampton Village, she convinced him not to sell his established security company, which already had established deep roots in the community. “I am one of the only women in a male-dominated industry, and I have thoroughly enjoyed overcoming the hurdles that this entails,” says Deana “Luckily, I now work hand-in-hand with my husband, who is now retired. His having 27 years of experience in law enforcement makes clients feel very comfortable.” The most elite party and event planners are their clients, St. Barth Hamptons, Polo Hamptons, Super Saturday, Niche Media, Southampton Bath & Tennis Club, Rogers Memorial Library, Vh1 Save the Music, ArtHamptons, Empire State Pride Agenda, Group for the East End, and many private clients that they simply can’t talk about.

In addition to event security, Wilson provides executive protection, and family security services. It’s every little girl’s dream to own a security company, right? Seriously though, what did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to do something in the medical profession. I was attending school to become a nurse. Whoever was plotting my path had a different plan for me, and it was the right one, luckily. Expectations are high in the Hamptons. What can a client expect from the planning process? I am completely hands-on from the very first meeting until the event’s conclusion. Clients want to speak to the owner; they don’t want to talk to a secretary, and I don’t blame them for that. My cell phone is on and ringing 24 hours a day, and I don’t mind that at all. I take special care in matching personnel to my clients’ specific needs. We are developing a potentially long-term relationship, so the pieces need to fit together seamlessly. The clients in the Hamptons demand the highest level of service, which is why all of our security agents are handselected and put through a rigorous vetting process. Do you get to see a lot of A-listers? Anyone in particular that really excited you to see in person? My idea of an A-lister and your idea of an A-lister might be somewhat different. I have been kind of desensitized to current celebrities as they are a part of everyday life in the Hamptons. However, my heart did pang when I met my schoolgirl crush Luke Perry. I hope I kept somewhat of a professional composure, although I cannot be sure. Is it rewarding to work with your husband? Well . . . I wouldn’t suggest it for everyone, but for us it works. It is a perfect balance; he brings the law enforcement expertise, while I make sure all of the clients’ needs are met. Due to high client demand, the company is in NY and Florida. LONG ISLAND AUTISM AND ASPERGER’S SUPPORT By John Dixon

Priscilla Arena, Stephanie Mendelson, Guest, Rhonda Klch

W

ith autism on the rise (affecting nearly 2% of the global population), it’s no wonder that SASI (Suffolk Asperger’s/Autism Support and Information) has steadily grown since it began a year and a half ago, now serving 1,700 families. Despite “Suffolk” in its name, SASI welcomes all Long Island families. In 2015, Priscilla Arena and Stephanie Mendelson started SASI as a simple support group for a dozen parents who were frustrated by the lack of autism resources in Suffolk County. “By our third monthly meeting, we discovered that we were really on to something. Word had spread, and it was standing room only. SASI provides a judgment-free environment where we can socialize with empathy and acceptance.” In addition to monthly support groups with featured speakers, SASI offers sibling support groups, a lending library, social events, a life skills program, and a vocational coaching program. SASI also has a birthday party club because “our children lack friends and are rarely invited to birthdays,” explained Mendelson. “One of our members had to cancel a graduation party because out of 60 plus invitations, not one person responded and not one person came. Priscilla and I both agree that we don’t ever want that to happen to our children.” In June, SASI had its first Blue Party gala, at Eastwind in Wading River. The attendees watched a video montage in which Arena explained her impetus for SASI: “If the world would not accept my son, then I would create a world for him.” According to many other SASI parents, that is exactly what Mendelson and Arena have done. JUNE JACOBS LABS June works alongside her daughter Rochelle Jacobs. “We constantly push each other forward and that makes the business better and more successful,” Rochelle said. Under Harriette’s magic touch, her team brings creativity, integrity, and excellence to everything they do. “Before the Chosen Few there was no one to say who’s the best of the best, the way Michelin stars rate restaurants,” says Harriette. This year two new companies were welcomed into this exclusive society, caterer Marianne Cordillo of Cupa Cabana Espresso and the floral designer Sandra de Ovando, whose clientele includes Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Hugh Jackman. VENEZUELA’S HUMANITARIAN CRISIS HOW YOU CAN HELP By Lizabeth Zindel

W

ith the ongoing violence in Venezuela, it’s extremely important to see the value in the U.S. providing aid. Right now President Maduro of Venezuela is trying to solidify a dictatorship and mold Venezuela into a communist country modeled after Cuba. The people of Venezuela take to the streets to protest every day and many have lost their lives to this daily battle. Here is a list of ways that you can help a people struggling to defend their basic human rights during this humanitarian crisis.

FEED THE CHILDREN The children of Venezuela are experiencing a high level of malnutrition due to food shortage and the high cost of supplies due to inflation. Sharing for Life helps get children the food that they need to survive during this difficult time. For more information visit comparteporunavida.com/en or follow them on Instagram @comparteporunavida. Another way to help the children is through Sun.risas, a nonprofit that strives to help kids around the world. Due to the crisis in Venezuela, they have created a page on their web site devoted specifically to donating money and supplies. For more information, visit sunrisas.org/venezuela

GIVE WATER AND FOOD TO PROTESTORS A group called Feed the Protest is in charge of providing food and water to the Venzuelans who are on the streets protesting. On the fundraising platform Generosity by Inidiegogo, individuals have the chance to donate money. Feed the Protest has currently raised close to $50K. For more information visit generosity.com/ fundraising/alimenta-la-protesta-feed-the-protest-venezuela

DONATE MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO THE GREEN HELMETS A group of medical students and young doctors in Venezuela’s capital are volunteering first aid to those on the front lines of protests. During the first wave of heavy protesting against President Nicolás Maduro back in 2014, three medical students founded The Green Helmets, also known as “Green Cross” and the “Cascos Blancos, Cruces Verdes.” The members range in age from 20 to 25, and some university groups include more than 100 students. In the capital city of Caracas, the students of Primeros Auxilios de la Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) lead the way, risking their lives to help others. A list of requested supplies can be purchased on Amazon and sent to them at no additional cost. For more information, visit

amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/4PS7Y9AT5MD5/ref=cm_ go_nav_hz You can also follow Primeros Auxilios (UCV) on Instagram @primerosauxiliosucv, Facebook PrimerosAuxiliosUCV, and Twitter @PA_UCV.

PROVIDE CARE TO ABANDONED CATS AND DOGS Each day of this humanitarian crisis, cats and dogs are being abandoned. The animals are also suffering the effects of tear gas and bullets if they venture near the protests. Santuario Luna (Luna’s Sanctuary) helps the abandoned and sick animals that are getting caught in the middle of the country’s chaos. For more information visit fundacionsantuarioluna.com and facebook.com/santuarioluna

BOYCOTT Don’t conduct business with companies owned by the Venezuelan government. When you are in the U.S., don’t fill up your car with gas at Citgo. The subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela, Citgo is the most prominent international Chavista enterprise, but many other ventures deserve to be rejected for helping the regime. You can also write to U.S. companies that are doing business with the Venezuelan government and demand they not support the dictatorship.

SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVISM Get on social-media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, and share key developments on the Venezuelan crisis that don’t make the news in America. With your posts, use #SOSvzla and share other posts with the same hashtag. Social Life
