PUBLISHER’S LETTER

In honor of Memorial Day, I would like to thank all the men and women of our armed forces as well as those who have given their lives to preserve our freedom. Also, I would like to thank first responders, nurses, doctors, and essential workers for their hard work during the difficult time of this pandemic. People who risk their lives to fight for freedom, save others, help the weak, shelter the poor, and service us during this pandemic deserve our gratitude and should be held in high esteem. I have been a New Yorker and Hamptonite my entire life. I don’t think anyone could have imagined a pandemic and the effect it would have on our communities. What I and many of you are experiencing is something new and horrible. It’s hard not to see the fear and worry in everyone. How do we move forward with our lives? I think everyone has their own answer, but I believe we, as Americans, will overcome this, just as we have pushed through other adversities our nation has faced. I’m looking forward to getting back to normal. The stay-at-home policy and social distancing have had an emotional effect on me and the people I know. I am a person who believes that socializing and interacting with people are essential to a healthy life, and I’m hopeful we can soon resume socializing in our homes and in public places. In the meantime, the old school way that Hamptonites have been spending time with the family on bike rides and nature walks is the right idea about now. It reminds me of the Hamptons summers in earlier decades, before cell phones and the internet. There are two important points I would like to make. When the Hamptons stores and restaurants open again, please remember small businesses will need your help more than ever, since they got hurt in this economic stall. Instead of buying online, please support the Hamptons community by shopping in all the small businesses and village shops. Also, please contribute to the Southampton Hospital. Its services are vital to the Hamptons, for residents and visitors alike. The hospital needs our help more than ever because its resources have been pushed to the maximum. You can learn more about the hospital and donate via stonybook.southamptonhospital.edu. As we start our summer this year, we do so in a way we have never done before. It may be a good time to think about our lives, our family, and the meaning of life. I know I will.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Devorah Rose, Nomi Ellenson Photography

I think of this new normal we are all suspended in as the great stillness. Every day is the same day endlessly repeating. Variety once came as a play, an event, a concert, and now it’s sharing a recipe with a friend, Zoom birthday parties, or a walk (of course, fully equipped with protective gear). During these new days all things quotidian seem magnified. Details you’ve never noticed about life are stark, almost crisp. This summer on the East End, all of our plans will be very different from past years, but we can create new things to relish. I once rushed through my morning routine, and now I plan on taking my latte to the backyard and communing with nature. Other adventures in the future will be more of the new things I’m currently enjoying. For example, cooking with friends over FaceTime, yoga class via Zoom and indulging in online academic classes as well as informative apps. During tough times, charitable giving is truly important. Schools, foundations, and those in vulnerable positions need us most. Kaufman Music Center, which also houses NYC’s only K-12 public school that teaches music as a core subject, is near and dear to my heart. Right now, more than ever, supporting musical education is essential. I often visit its website to find out if there are Zoom concerts and other activities that I can participate in. Although the new normal may seem never-ending, there are many wonderful activities we can be a part of from the Hamptons. Soon these strange times will change. It may be another type of new normal but as long as we continue with gratitude in our hearts, all will be well. KHALIL GIBRAN: Your joy is your sorrow unmasked… Is it not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives? When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight. Some of you say, “Joy is greater than sorrow,” and others say, “Nay, sorrow is the greater.” But I say unto you, they are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits, alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed. Verily you are suspended like scales between your sorrow and your joy. Only when you are empty are you at standstill and balanced…

With love,

LETTER FROM THE SENIOR EDITOR

Christine Montanti, Photography by Don Fitzgibbon

As we celebrate Memorial Day weekend under new restrictions, we will mark the official start to summer in an unprecedented way in the Hamptons. We have so much to be grateful for: our amazing country, the United States which we call home, our dedicated medical employees who keep us healthy, and of course, our good fortune to spend time and reside in one of the most amazing getaway locations in the world- the Hamptons. What could be better than spending this period of social distancing in a private residence surrounded by pristine landscapes and majestic ocean beaches? During this period of social distancing, on the East End this holiday weekend, there are many outdoor activities to enjoy. Biking is a wonderful way to explore the natural beauty of the Hamptons landscape and get exercise. Or perhaps, take a run or walk along some of the East End’s most picturesque trails while sightseeing and getting to know the incredible wildlife in nearby forests and ponds. Or simply, spend time in the privacy of your own residence by engaging in outdoor workout routines or do it yourself projects. Whatever activities you choose to participate in over the holiday weekend, remember to adhere to all of the mandatory guidelines and stay safe! Best Wishes,

The unexpected Covid-19 outbreak in March took New Yorkers by surprise, and now more than ever the natural beauty of the Hamptons lifestyle is in high demand. Unfortunately, all of us have been affected by this pandemic in one way or another. Whether we were infected with the deadly virus, suffered the loss of a loved one, or lost our employment or business due to the quarantine, the Coronavirus has disrupted each and every one of our lives in the most devastating way. Undoubtedly, our frontline health-care workers have become our heroes as they tirelessly fight Covid-19 alongside essential workers who uninterruptedly serve us while putting their own health at risk.

This summer it’s not about bellbottoms or rompers, but instead the trend comes to life in jacket form. Designers from Paco Rabanne to Victoria Beckham embraced this look on the spring/summer runways with large collars that were John Travolta-approved. Salvatore Ferragamo and Saint Laurent added a classic touch to the trend with structured blazers. Get ready to hit the dance floor.

JETSETTER STYLE LE NEGRESCO HOTEL By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr.

Le Negresco is a fairytale escape in the Côte d’Azur region of France and is the perfect winter escape. The pastel pink dome of the hotel can be seen from almost anywhere along Nice’s seaside. This hotel, built during the last days of the Belle Epoch, but designed in its high style, is an official historic monument. It’s unrivaled guest list over the last century ranges from royalty to rock stars. Standing guard at the most recognizable hotel in Nice are doormen clad in blueand-red coats and feather-topped hats, reminiscent of 19th century French military uniforms. In January 1913, Le Negresco opened its doors, and has had several owners. The hotel currently displays five centuries of French history in its 99 rooms and 25 suites, each taking on a completely different look. Thousands of contemporary artworks and antiques decorate the halls and rooms that range from Baroque to contemporary works, including many works by Salvador Dali. Dali was good friends with the recently deceased owner of the property, the fabulous Jeanne Augier, who reinvented this hotel to perfectly match the glittering flamboyance of the French Riviera. The most famous artwork perhaps is the painting of Louis XIV, done by his official portraitist, Hyacinthe Rigaud. The hotel is perfectly located next to the Musée Massena, countless restaurants and shops, and is only a five-minute walk to Old Town.

The food offerings at the property are equally as creative and delightful. The totally renovated and beautiful La Rotonde, with its white and gold tones, is a modern rendition of the former carousel-themed restaurant. Virginie Basselot, the executive chef at Le Negresco, has been creating a unique menu of fine local products from sea and soil. Le Negresco is truly an imaginative property that remains an iconic piece of history, offering a wonderfully comfortable and unique stay. u Head to hotel-negresco-nice.com/en to book your stay and head to cotedazurfrance.fr/en to find out more on the beautiful Côte d’Azur region of France. THE MALE BAG LENDING A HAND By anthony MiChaEl

One of the best things about travel is discovering which amenity option your hotel has chosen for its guests. On a pre-Covid trip to Oslo, I discovered Sprekenhus, a local purveyor of gel cleansers, lotions, and oils. My hands and body have been thanking me ever since. This luxe line, rooted in mild argan oil, is decidedly more masculine in fragrance than others. I want to wash and moisturize even more that I should! And, yes, they sell a Covid-19 sanitizer.

I’ve been putting my hands to good use during this whole situation. Specifically, I’m able to quickly navigate my mobile device to every possible shopping opportunity. I recently discovered California-based Bathing Culture. I admit, I was initially sucked in by their cute bottles — which reminded me of the Hamptons — and decided to spring for some Mind and Body Wash and Golden Hour Hydrosol, a very refreshing mist (I spray it on my pillows). This was one time I judged the book by the cover and the results were great. Oh, yes, they too are on the Covid-19 sanitizer bandwagon.

No, I’m not putting a lot of thought into what I wear below the belt in these workfrom-home days. So, I was thrilled to find that one of my favorite lounge brands restarted production on what are likely the most comfortable (and versatile) shorts on the market. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: you simply haven’t lived until you’ve slipped into Tani’s Breeze Linen Herringbone Shorts.

Maine Craft Distilling Sanitizer mainecraftdistilling.com If you like your hand sanitizer the way you like your booze — nice and strong — Maine Craft Distilling is your best bet. Located in one of our favorite states, this distillery was among those that chose to switch gears when the pandemic broke. The result: the high octane We Got This sanitizer. You can likely run your car on this stuff. Social Life

Guide to Creating a Lavish Spa Day at Home

P

rep for the sun season by creating a spa day in the comfort of your own home. I sat down with Gabrielle Ophals, a co-founder of Haven Spa, to get her insider tips on how to pamper yourself from head to toe. How can we create a spa atmosphere at home? Definitely go all out: soft lighting, relaxing music, comfortable temperature, aromatherapy (use a diffuser with essential oils). A hot bath is a favorite and a great way to really unwind. Take your time, exfoliate your whole body, thoroughly moisturize, and treat yourself. What steps should we take to give ourselves an at-home facial? Be gentle with your skin. First, cleanse and exfoliate, then use a steamer on your face for 5 minutes. Apply a mask and remove it thoroughly with tepid water, pat (don’t rub) your skin dry and apply the appropriate finishing products. Start with a serum (retinol for nighttime, vitamin C for daytime), moisturizer, and eye cream. PMD Clean Pro; Sephora, $179 Dr. Dennis Gross Facial Steamer; Sephora, $149 La Prairie White Caviar Eye Extraordinaire; laprairie.com, $550

Fresh Rose Hydration Oil-Infused Serum; sephora.com, $59 Amethyst Facial Tool Set; kungfuapothecary.com, $115

How can we give our hands and feet some TLC? Treat the backs of your hands exactly the way you treat your face, using all the same products. Your hands are the most exposed part of your body after your face and they show age quickly. Treat your feet similarly, but use a body lotion to moisturize this usually very dry area. Haoma Body Cream; hamoaearth.com, $100

What is dry brushing and do you recommend it? Dry brushing is all about moving lymph through your system and enhancing circulation; it also lightly exfoliates. It’s a great pick-meup in the morning. It doesn’t take long to do as it’s really a series of quick, short movements starting from the outer parts of your body and moving towards your heart (e.g. start at the toes and work your way up your leg). The Marble Body Brush; gilded-glamour.com, $49

How can we incorporate a massage into the facial? If you want to incorporate a facial massage into your at-home facial, the best time is before the mask with an oil. Don’t do anything that involves pulling the skin; pressure is good as long as it doesn’t hurt. Move along the contours of your face in upward sweeping motions. SocialLifeMagazine.com

NIKKI WALTER HELPING US EXERCISE AWAY OUR QUARANTINE BLUES By lilian lanGtry

D

uring these apocalyptic times, where dieting and exercise have been thrown to the wind, along comes savior Nikki Walter. The 40-year-old fitness enthusiast continues to put us to shame, winning one fitness competition after another. With long blond hair and big blue eyes, she never stops working, beginning her day at 7 each morning and continuing into the late hours. While Nikki’s bright smile and enthusiastic demeanor radiate joy, she has experienced a fair amount of grief and tragedy that have helped her assist others with effective coping mechanisms — tools that are now invaluable. Nikki discovered her love for sports in junior high school, when she joined the running team and cheerleading squad and attended weekly ballet classes. Tragedy struck when Nikki’s father was killed in a car accident the year before her high school graduation, upending her plans to go abroad for college. Instead, Nikki pursued her degree at a local university so she could look after her mother and younger sisters. After graduation, Nikki began a promising career at Medtronic Wellness Centers and met her future husband.

Addison and Nikki

Five years after the birth of their daughter, Addison, Nikki’s faced another tragedy when her 35-year-old husband succumbed to leukemia. Despite being overcome with grief and sorrow, Nikki vowed to follow her dreams. Emboldened to begin her true calling — competing in fitness competitions — Nikki became a six-time first-place finisher in the National Physique Committee (NPC) Competition as well as qualifying for the NPC Nationals in 2018. Soon after, her career began to soar when she became a topten finalist in the United States for bodybuilding. com as well as their spokesperson. Her expertise in fitness has led to appearances in Natural Muscle Magazine, FHM Magazine, Oxygen Magazine, and on the Today Show. TRIFECTA MED SPA SOLVING PANDEMIC BLUES WITH CoolTone By Winter Fairchild We’ve all seen the memes on Instagram and Facebook that joke about a flabby pandemic body from lack of movement. And yes we have all laughed, but we also have felt worried and compelled to change our bodies for the better. Thankfully, Trifecta Med Spa has a solution to our pandemic blues! WHAT IS CoolTone? Trifecta Med Spa offers CoolTone by CoolSculpting, an FDAcleared device to strengthen and tone muscles for a firmer abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. CoolTone uses magnetic muscle stimulation (MMS) that penetrates the muscle layers and induces strong involuntary muscle contractions. A muscle’s response to the extreme MMS contractions is strengthened fibers, resulting in improved muscle conditioning. WHAT IS THE TREATMENT? Prior to receiving treatment, Trifecta will assess if you are a candidate for CoolTone, and design a treatment plan for you. During your treatment, depending on the treatment area — abdomen, buttocks, or thighs — one or both applicators will be strapped to your body. The applicator generates a magnetic field that creates a current when it passes through a muscle, which has good conductivity. The contractions are painless, and each session lasts about 30 minutes.

HOW MANY SECTIONS OF THE BODY CAN ONE TREAT DURING A SESSION? One treatment area — abdomen, both buttocks, or both thighs — can be treated during one session, but more than one session can occur on the same day, making it possible to treat all desired areas the same day. HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE NEEDED FOR MAXIMUM BENEFITS? Trifecta Med Spa recommends a protocol of four treatments over two weeks, with at least a day in between a treatment on a specific area. The plan Trifecta prepares before you begin will offer the best course of treatment for your needs. CAN CoolTone WITH CoolSculpting BE COMBINED? Yes, in fact, Trifecta believes in combination therapy. CoolSculpting is the gold standard for fat reduction and CoolTone is the latest and greatest muscle-toning technology, so both these treatments together are a winning combination. trifectamedspa.com Social Life

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF GARDENING By L. A. Dawson

ave you ever wondered why you feel so joyful while working in your garden? Joy is just one of the many reasons to include gardening among your daily activities. Our stressful lives make us a community of irritable people who do not take the time to care for ourselves. Stress takes its toll on our health. When we feel happy with our hands in the soil, it is partially due to the nonpathogenic mycobacterium vaccae. Scientists have found that this bacterium has the same effect on neurons as the drug Prozac. It also can stimulate serotonin production, which causes relaxation. Exposure to both dirt and plants can help boost the immune system. Spending some time in the sun midday without sunscreen can be a good idea. This allows for skin to make vitamin D from the sun’s UVB rays. Skin types vary from I (pale, burns easily) to VI (dark, doesn’t burn). The amount of time it takes to produce enough vitamin D can vary from 15 minutes to two hours depending on your skin type. See vitamindcouncil.org for more information about this. Gardening can also reduce the level of the stress hormone cortisol. If you spend three hours doing moderate gardening, you can skip your daily gym session. What a wonderful trade-off while taking time to smell the roses, literally and figuratively. Allowing yourself to take a break from life and play in the dirt is giving permission to care for yourself. Looking at the world with the eyes of a child lightens our stress load and makes us laugh. This is all food for your soul and a move toward better health. If you eat home-grown vegetables, it’s likely your dietary habits will change for the better. This is a positive choice over the growing

number of fad diets that are moving us away from whole foods and causing nutritional deficiencies. There have even been studies suggesting that gardening reduces the risk of dementia by 36%. Gardeners report better moods after planting. According to the website sojourngreatdays.com: “. . . there is no more tangible measure of one’s power to cause positive change in the world than to nurture a plant from seed to fruit-bearing.”

3 IMMUNE BOOSTING FOODS TO EAT DAILY By liana wErnEr-Gray

1. LIQUID CHLOROPHYLL Chlorophyll is a compound found in dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, and broccoli. Eating dark leafy greens is great; however, it’s exceptionally more powerful when it is consumed via a liquid, either in water, a juice, or smoothie. You can even get liquid chlorophyll and drop it into your tea and coffee! It is noteworthy that chlorophyll contains magnesium, which we know helps to boost the immune system and reduce anxiety. People with low magnesium intake are likely to experience a compromised immune system and extra stress on the body. Chlorophyll also reduces inflammation in the body and it has been shown to enhance oxidative stress tolerance; meaning, your body will be able to adapt to stressful conditions easier. Here is a recipe for my green juice that you can drink to ensure your immune system is getting the support it needs on a daily basis.

2. COLLOIDAL SILVER Colloidal silver is naturally found in soil, mushrooms, and breast milk. As a dietary supplement, we are able to safely consume it in small quantities in colloidal form. The liquid contains only nanoparticles of the metal. Colloidal silver is a liquid or gel in which microscopic particles of silver are suspended. As soon as Covid-19 broke out, Sovereign Silver, the gold standard brand in colloidal silver, sold out around the world because it’s immune-boosting and virus-protecting qualities are well known. Other than in foods, you can consume colloidal silver in liquid form or with a spray bottle that goes right under the tongue, three times a day for an instant immune boost. Colloidal silver works by taking damaged cells out of a damaged state and replacing them with healthy new cells. It also assists with optimum gut health.

Super Greens Juice When people ask me what I recommend they do if they can only change one thing in their diet, this is it. Total time: 10 minutes | Serves 1 Ingredients: 1 cucumber 1 orange 3 celery stalks ½ cup kale ½ cup spinach Handful of fresh parsley ½ lemon, peeled Thumb-sized piece of ginger Action: Juice all the ingredients. Drink.

3. EAT AN ORANGE EVERY DAY Isn’t it interesting that when we get a cold or feel our immunity is running low, we often crave oranges? Oranges contain vitamin C and a lot of other antioxidants, and they are so cheerful. Even just looking at a vibrant orange can brighten our mood. But combined with their scent and flavor, well, the impact is incomparable. Odors are capable of altering our emotional states! So, enjoy peeling your orange and breathe in its scent as much as you can!

DR . KENNETH MARK COSMETIC DERMATOLOGY EXPERT By r. Couri hay HAMPTONS, SOHO & ASPEN As an avid skier, outdoorsman, and physical fitness aficionado, Dr. Kenneth Mark knows firsthand about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and the effects of the elements on our skin. While he openly admits that his favorite “office” for a cosmetic consultation is the Aspen Mountain gondola, Dr. Mark also finds it rewarding to take care of the skin cancer and cosmetic concerns of patients on the East End. “Practicing in multiple locales that have a small-town feel has allowed me to become embedded in the communities, supporting various local charities. It’s not just work; it’s being part of something bigger,” says Dr. Mark, who also has an office in Soho. BEST DOCTORS LIST Dr. Kenneth Mark has twice been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor, one of the top 5% of physicians in the United States as selected by other doctors. This is arguably the most prestigious honor a doctor can receive. Specifically, Dr. Mark’s expertise is in cosmetic dermatology: injectables, lasers, peels, Kybella, skin cancer detection and cure with Mohs’ surgery, acne, and rosacea. After three years of training in dermatology at NYU, Dr. Mark completed a two-year fellowship with a cosmetic dermatology surgeon and a plastic surgeon, in order to sub-specialize in cosmetic procedures, plastic reconstruction, and minimally invasive Mohs’ micrographic skin-cancer surgery. “These are my real areas of expertise,” he says. “For 20 years I have cut and stitched people’s eyelids, ears, noses, and lips, and I’m fortunate to have mastered eye-hand coordination and attention to detail,” he says. “This precision, knowledge of anatomy, and experience translates to being a better injector when it comes to Botox and fillers.” ULTHERAPY One of the most requested treatments is Ultherapy, the only FDA-cleared non-surgical procedure that actually lifts the skin. It lifts the jawline, jowls, neck, and eyelids without surgery.

Ultherapy requires only one treatment, and there is virtually no downtime. “You can go to the beach the next day, you can go to a cocktail party that night,” says Dr. Mark. CoolSCulpTing Another patient favorite is CoolSculpting, a noninvasive way to improve your beach body by freezing fat. Unlike liposuction, it avoids the risks of anesthesia or denting from removing too much fat. There is also no downtime with this procedure. Dr. Mark was the first in the Hamptons to offer the “cool advantage,” which cuts the treatment time almost in half! FILLERS & LASERS Dr. Mark offers the most up-to-date and best-in-class noninvasive cosmetic treatments, including MixTo fractional CO2 laser, Botox, Juvéderm, Vollure, Volbella, and Voluma. The latter, he says, is the greatest filler ever invented, because it is extremely safe, adding volume with the most natural results. “Voluma allows me to think like an artist and lift and sculpt the face in three dimensions, instead of just filling lines and wrinkles.” NEW PROCEDURES Two of the hottest procedures Dr. Mark offers have minimal to no downtime. One is a non-ablative, fractional-laser facial to brighten, tone, and smooth skin’s texture. The other is microneedling with radiofrequency, which is FDA-cleared for the treatment of wrinkles, to stimulate collagen and elastin. Dr. Mark is a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at NYU. Dr. Mark maintains private practices in Soho, Southampton, East Hampton, and Aspen. FOCUS ON WHAT MATTERS MOST HEALTH AND FAMILY By Kristy Rao

Kristy Rao, Photo by Frank Rocco

W

ith our newly found time, we have the opportunity to focus on what matters most, namely our health and families. As a nutritionist, I have specific concerns and recommendations. First, the number of people who are eating processed foods during this crisis worries me a great deal. Those who are susceptible to Covid-19 include not only the elderly and those who are overweight or have pre-existing conditions, but those who are vitamin deficient. More than 90% of Americans are deficient in one or more nutrients. The immune system needs nutrient-dense whole foods to function well, yet so many are relying on boxed comfort foods. Please discard any packaged food that contains five or more ingredients. Things like white bread, pasta, chips, cookies, and cereal are deficient in nutrients and fiber yet packed with preservatives, unhealthy oils, carbs, sugar, and artificial additives. Do not even get me started about fast food. I urge you to eat multiple servings per day of non-starchy vegetables and fruit. They are high in the vitamins and phytonutrients that will support your immune system. Plant a garden, visit your local farmers market, or order online from Provisions or Misfits Market. Death from infections and illnesses is often due to the body’s inability to fight microbes because of nutrient deficiencies. Supplement with a multi-vitamin/mineral, vitamin D3, buffered vitamin C, zinc, and fish oil. Diabetics are more likely to die from Covid-19, and one in two Americans is pre-diabetic or diabetic. What better time than now to cut out refined sugars and starches, which suppress the immune system. I have seen remission of type 2 diabetes within a month by doing this. Consuming adequate protein is also critically important for immunity. While most Americans eat enough protein, the elderly and vegans often do not. Eat approximately half your body weight in grams of protein per day, or about two four-ounce servings of organic, lean animal protein. Plant-based protein in the form of legumes, nuts/seeds, tofu and tempeh from nonGMO soy and shakes are great if consumed in enough quantity. Drinking enough water is equally important, as it supports all body functions, including the immune system. Exercise also helps boost the immune system. Do it every day. Yes, I mean every day, because you need it right now for your mental and physical sanity. Avoid overexertion, though, if you are feeling run down, because fatigue lowers your immune defenses.

SocialLifeMagazine.com

Perhaps the most overlooked cause of being susceptible to viral infections is stress. In one study, people had cold viruses injected into their nasal passages, but only those who scored high on the stress questionnaire caught a cold. Now is the time for meditation, yoga, hot baths, and deep breathing. And please, get enough sleep! A lack of sleep weakens your immune system. Sleep restores and heals us, and you should sleep eight hours each night. To paraphrase the political theorist Hannah Arendt, the cost of under-reacting is far greater than the cost of overreacting. Hopefully, the silver lining will be a heightened awareness about looking out for our health, both as individuals and as a society. kristyraohealth.com

DR . RAMON TALLAJ STEPS UP CALL THE DOCTOR By r. Couri hay

Dr. Inés Hernandez and Dr. Ramon Tallaj

RAISING THE ALARM, SAVING LIVES At the apex of the Covid-19 crisis in New York City, Dr. Tallaj was at work with New York’s vulnerable Hispanic community — a group that he affectionately refers to as “his people.” “We raised the alarm at the beginning,” says Dr. Tallaj, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic who founded Somos Healthcare, a nonprofit, physician-led healthcare network caring for nearly one million New Yorkers who are almost exclusively from vulnerable Hispanic, Asian, and African-American populations. “Because our doctors are part of these communities, because we are immigrants and speak the languages of our patients, we could listen to our community and see this coming. It meant that we were able to prepare.” Listening to the community meant that Somos’s network of 2,500 physicians was able to gather supplies. It meant that they were able

to quickly open five bilingual coronavirus testing centers in underserved areas like Queens, the Bronx, and Upper Manhattan (where Dr. Tallaj’s Inwood office is based). It meant that Dr. Tallaj’s wife, Dr. Inés Hernandez (who is a foreign doctor from the Dominican Republic), was able to begin researching antibodies. It meant that Somos could anticipate the needs of their patients. For instance, Somos has delivered tens of thousands of meals to out-of-work patients, saving lives. “We have delivered 12,000 meals in the last two days alone,” says Dr. Tallaj, who is working closely with Governor Andrew Cuomo during the crisis. “Our people have perhaps $100. They make $15 an hour. They have no money saved for healthcare. They don’t have money to buy Lysol. Without question, this is the most important crisis I’ve faced in my career,” says Dr. Tallaj, who has a half century of experience. Social Life

Pope Francis with Dr. Tallaj in the Vatican

York was in the midst of the AIDS crisis. “I was here during the strongest part of the epidemic,” he says. “Almost fifty percent of the patients then were AIDS patients. I had to watch young people die from a virus. That’s how I was introduced to New York. That is a time that is still in my head. You can’t take that away. Every diagnosis was a confrontation with death, just like with this Covid virus.” Amalia Gomez and Dr. Tallaj in Washington Heights

DANGEROUS AND EMOTIONAL WORK It’s been dangerous and emotional work. Dr. Tallaj has six children. One is a veterinarian and three of Dr. Tallaj’s children have been infected with the potentially deadly virus during their work as frontline physicians and have become seriously ill. Dr. Tallaj himself is especially at risk. Noting that although few Somos doctors have become seriously ill, many family members of staff have died. Growing up as the eldest of six children in a mixed Lebanese and Dominican family in Santiago de Los Caballeros, he faced hardship. At his university in Santo Domingo, which was frequently without electricity, he studied by candlelight. He was inspired to attend medical school by his uncle, a pediatrician who had been arrested and tortured under the Trujillo dictatorship. Dr. Tallaj quickly became a prominent figure in his country. He became the under secretary of public health and social service, a member of the Dominican-Haitian Frontier Affairs Commission, and then the medical director of the Social Security and Welfare Institute. His work put him in close contact with politicians and foreign officials. ADVISING PRESIDENT BARAK OBAMA ON HEALTHCARE REFORM When Cardinal John O’Connor of the Archdiocese of New York asked him to come serve in New York, he immediately accepted, turning down a position as the Dominican Republic’s minister of health. Little did he know that a few decades later, he would advise President Barak Obama on healthcare reform. It was a dream for me to come to New York,” says Dr. Tallaj, who now enjoys painting and international horse racing and breeding. “It was the American dream.” But when Dr. Tallaj arrived in 1991, New SocialLifeMagazine.com

PREVENTION IS THE KEY Today, as New York hopes to begin to heal and perhaps reopen, Dr. Tallaj is still with his people, in the streets, at their homes, and in the hospital. That may sound strange for a Manhattan doctor and healthcare executive, but Dr. Tallaj says that is precisely why we have to transform our “sick care” system into a true “health care” system. “Somos is value-based,” Dr. Tallaj explains. “That means that primary care providers are not paid a fee based on a service, but according to the longer-term health outcomes for patients. Prevention is the key.” And because so many of Somos’s patients rely on Medicaid, those long-term health improvements mean big savings for the state via a 25 percent reduction in hospital admissions. In fact, in 2018 alone, Somos saved New York $336 million in avoided Medicaid costs. “We have really done something unique in New York City,” he says of the healthcare platform he founded in 2014. “We establish genuine relationships with our patients and get to know their family circumstances, social lives, and the environmental factors that impact the health of the patient and their families.” POPE FRANCIS Last year, long before the pandemic, Dr. Tallaj had a private audience with Pope Francis in Rome. He says that the words the pope spoke to him that day still inspire his vision for Somos and the future of healthcare for New York’s minorities. “We are serving the poor,” Dr. Tallaj says. “We are feeding the hungry. We are caring for and curing the sick. It gives me such peace in my heart to know that at the right moment we have done the right thing for the right people for the right reason.” somoscommunitycare.org

ROBERT S. CHALONER JEAN SHAFIROFF INTERVIEWS ROBERT S. CHALONER, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF STONY BROOK SOUTHAMPTON HOSPITAL By JEan shaFiroFF

It does indeed. Can you tell our readers how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed life at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital? The Covid-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for our planet, our nation, our East End communities, and our team at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. I am so very proud of our heroic doctors, nurses, and staff, who have shown incredible courage and resolve in caring for our community in its time of greatest need. They are doing extraordinary work under extraordinary circumstances. Our hospital has planned, prepared, and performed very well under the most challenging of conditions. We have doubled our bed capacity, tripled our ICU capacity, and adapted very well to ever-evolving CDC and Department of Health guidelines. Additionally, we worked very hard to ensure that we had enough staff, supplies, and equipment to provide the very best care possible.

Jean Shafiroff, Photo by Michael Paniccea Robert Chaloner, Photo by Tanya Malott

Our world is drastically different from how it was just a few months ago. How would you compare life today at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital with how it was a year ago? At this time last year, our East End communities were poised for their annual rites of spring. Traffic was increasing noticeably as the trade parade signaled the urgency of readying homes and businesses for the oncoming summer season. Our villages and hamlets, awakened by swelling seasonal populations, were participating in a thriving outdoor life as our restaurants, garden centers, and shops sprang to life. And, as is our tradition, you and I sat down to address the hospital’s upcoming Annual Summer Party and social scene as well as our hospital’s newest initiatives. All of this seems so very long ago.

The doctors, nurses, and staff are doing a great job! You have been an amazing leader. How has the community responded to this crisis? I so wish I had the words to adequately express my gratitude, pride, and admiration for our friends, neighbors, and colleagues who have come together as one to ensure that we had what we needed to care for our communities. People from all walks of life rallied around us to ensure that we had the necessary financial resources, supplies, equipment, and human resources. We have been blessed with extraordinary acts of kindness by caring and generous individuals and businesses that want to be part of the solution. Can you give our readers some examples of these acts of kindness? I believe I could fill the pages of your magazine with outstanding acts of kindness and generosity on the part of people in our communities. School children have created and sent beautiful and heartwarming cards of gratitude and encouragement to our healthcare staff. People like yourself and businesses have donated food SocialLifeMagazine.com

and meals for our staff and, in so doing, have supported our local restaurants, which are suffering as we remain socially distant and at home. Southampton Inn and a friend of the hospital provided rooms to house additional nurses and healthcare staff. A local physician, Dr. Peter Michalos, with friends of the hospital, used his influence and rallied the community to access additional ventilators for our hospital to care for the most critically ill. Scores of people donated personal protection equipment, including, masks, gowns, face shields, and gloves. Local farms, nurseries, and garden centers donated beautiful spring flowers for our front-line staff. The chairman of our board, Ken Wright, in collaboration with our emergency department director, Dr. Darin Wiggins, local businesses, and over 100 volunteers developed an innovative strategy to produce and deliver much-needed isolation gowns for our dedicated healthcare staff. These are but a few examples of how our hospital and our community came together as a team in support of our common goal. And, of course, the public parade of gratitude at 7 p.m. each day has been both heartwarming and appreciated by all of us.

department to be located at Pantigo Place in East Hampton. Our vision also includes a state-of-the-art community hospital on the Stony Brook Southampton college campus, an extraordinary facility that will be enormously beneficial to all of us on the East End. Never before has our appreciation for high-quality healthcare close to home been quite as profound as it is today. I am grateful beyond words to our community for their solidarity, compassion, and generosity as we battle this pandemic together. And, as this article goes to print, I am ever mindful of our responsibility to oversee and guide the health, safety, and wellness of our communities.

All of your preparations and actions must have come at tremendous cost. I’m told that the community has been very generous. They have indeed. We created the Healthcare Heroes Fund to provide a vehicle by which our friends could join with us and support our initiatives. To date, nearly $2 million has been contributed by caring school children, local community organizations, businesses, individuals, foundations, and other philanthropists, and our hospital is so deeply grateful for this most generous and much-needed financial support. Jean, we thank you and your family for donating generously. We thank you also for helping with fundraising for the Covid-19 Healthcare Heroes Fund. More information about this fund can be found at southampton.stonybrookmedicine.edu. What is your outlook for the future? The Covid-19 crisis, and our ability to rise to the challenge, drives home the point that high-quality healthcare is vital and that new, state-of-the-art healthcare facilities are crucial to our community’s health. We are also learning valuable lessons from our pandemic response that will guide the planning of these new facilities and strengthen our ability to address future public health needs and crises. Briefly, I would like to touch on two exciting initiatives, both of which we will resume planning once the current crisis is behind us. Providing local, easily accessible emergency care for East Hampton communities is among our top priorities. Accordingly, our vision for reimagining the healthcare landscape of the East End includes a modern new satellite emergency

Within the series it has to be the M8 Gran Coupe: beautiful styling with hand-crafted details, an endless rush of power and luxurious versatility begging to be shared with family and friends. A combination that is unrivaled among sport sedans. Convertible or hardtop? Has to be hardtop for me! I love the aggressive and flowing lines of the Coupe which hearken back to the great GT cars of the past. Why do you think BMW is a Hamptons “It” car? BMW is the “It” car of the Hamptons because they both embody the same characteristics: luxury, style, performance, and prestige. Both are the pinnacles of affluence. What’s your favorite thing about the Hamptons? My favorite activity while in the Hamptons is enjoying the beaches while being minutes away from everything that the area has to offer.

The quiet towns, estates, vineyards, and horse farms all play a part in the lifestyle out East. Fabulous and fast are how we think of the BMW brand. How would you describe it? BMW is “The Ultimate Driving Machine,” and to us that means not just offering superb handling but also being luxurious and innovative. Simply put, we work tirelessly to make sure every BMW delivers on the highest expectations of performance, luxury, and technology. You’re a homegrown Hamptonite. Tell us about your relationship to the Hamptons. The Hamptons is in my blood, and the area is more to me than just a lifestyle or a destination. It makes me think of my family and our history that are forever intertwined with the area. The Hamptons is, and will always be, my favorite place to go to reconnect with my roots, while escaping the hustle and bustle of everyday life. bmwofsouthampton.com 759 County Road 39A, Southampton Social Life

Marilyn Monroe

There’s a Marilyn Monroe TV series coming out based on the bestseller Marilyn Monroe: The Final Years by Keith Badman. The show will focus on the sex symbol’s tragic final years and will depict her struggles with addiction and her ultimate death from a drug overdose. The series will also set the record straight about the lurid conspiracy theories surrounding Monroe’s death, including her reported affairs with President John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert Kennedy. The series, from Seven Seas Films, has received the blessing and cooperation of the owner of Monroe’s estate, the Authentic Brands Group. The Marilyn role has not been announced, but the actress will reenact the naked pool scenes from the bombshell’s final movie, Something’s Got to Give, based on the photos taken on the set by the famed lensman Lawrence Schiller. The actual signed images of Monroe swimming naked in the pool, just before she died on August 5, 1962, can be bought at M.S. Rau in New Orleans, which is also offering items owned by Monroe’s second husband, the baseball icon Joe DiMaggio. These include the baseball legend’s gold presentation watch that he received on his 50th birthday and a Cartier silver presentation tray given to him by the NY Yankees in 1984. M.S. Rau also has a red abstract painting by Frank Sinatra, one of Monroe’s lovers. rauantiques.com

TALK AROUND TOWN SANDY COHEN’S ART COLLECTION HAS INVESTORS FLOCKING By Veda Falmouth

S

andy Cohen is a celebrated Hamptons artist whose name has been a frequent topic of conversation about what art to invest in. Her work is stunning, emotional, and riveting. Social Life sat down with her to learn more.

Your work is loved by royal families and high-end collectors. Why do you think they love your work? I dedicate myself wholeheartedly to every piece. I think people can feel and connect to that energy. It’s genuine and raw. The one thing I hear often is that my work is ‘alive.’ I’m selftaught, so there are no rules. I play between a mix of pop, contemporary, fine, classical, and street art — sometimes all on the same canvas. My pieces have been seen hanging next to artists like Alec Monopoly and Pablo Picasso. Totally opposite collections. I also enjoy combining nostalgic childhood cartoons with adult subtext. It perfectly balances seriousness with playfulness.

Your Keith Haring tribute collection is currently on display at VW Contemporary in Greenwich, Connecticut. What inspired you to create this? I love Keith Haring’s work and the era it encapsulates. He evokes so much street and nostalgia through such simple images. Art lingers long after artists leave the world, yet through their work they continue to inspire and influence generations to come. It’s a beautiful endless chain. I wanted to interact with his legacy.

An exclusive preview of Sandy Cohen’s new work, Alice in Wonderland.

Do you have a favorite piece of your own? My favorite is a vibrant Alice in Wonderland piece from my latest collection. It’s rich and full of energy. I used all types of mediums to create depth and texture. Word around town is that people are flocking to your art as an investment right now, especially given the volatile market we’re in. Are there pieces you refuse to sell? I have a piece at my Hamptons studio I’m reluctant to sell titled Free Your Mind. It’s from a collection of three called Blood on My Hands. It’s layered and detailed with many hidden messages. You’ve had serious battles with your health throughout your life. How has this influenced your art? Being afflicted with a debilitating chronic illness was life changing. For me, it came on suddenly at 19, and I was bedridden for five years. This is an age when you are a new adult, SocialLifeMagazine.com

experimenting and discovering the world and yourself. When that was abruptly taken from me, it changed the way I thought, felt, and experienced life. My work became filled with scenes of fantasy for my mind to escape to. I was terribly lonely and didn’t know if I would ever experience being in love, so I painted a lot of imagined romantic imagery during those years. Being dragged through a broken healthcare system opened my eyes to other people’s painful journeys as well as political injustices. This all continues to influence my work today. What is the most important message you share with people through your art? Never give up on your dreams, never give up on love, and never give up on life. You never know what’s just around the corner. Sandy Cohen sandycohenart.com

LINJIE DENG CHINESE-AMERICAN ARTIST By Carlos Lacayo were at his studio, Deng used his home computer to create three works inspired by his time in isolation. “As an artist, I thought Why not create a strong image with a strong message for the public. Art is about bringing change, for myself and others.” Deng designed several posters for the UN Global Callout to Creatives, an open competition for creatives to design informative works that accurately communicate public health messages. Each, like the illustration here, features vibrant color and text. Deng says that he did “Be Strong NYC” specifcally “because I feel like the medical workers are holding everyone in their hearts, and I wanted to show how much appreciation we have for them.” He recently finished an acrylic on canvas titled No Touching that continues to spread this potentially life-saving message.

ART SAVED MY LIFE Linjie Deng is a Chinese ink and multimedia artist based in NYC. Art’s influence on Deng began at a young age at his parents’ fireworks store in Deng Village, in northern China. Deng would bother his parents during business hours until they decided to keep him busy with paper and pen, telling him, “Do whatever you want.” One day, Deng’s parents found him drawing inside a box. Later, he began to draw in multiple places in the house. “I would draw on the walls and on the bed. My mom got upset and sent me to calligraphy class.” Soon after, Deng learned Chinese ink art and painting. Deng attended college in Beijing, where he took multimedia and design classes. In August 2015, Deng moved to New York, where he received his MFA in Design for Social Innovation from the School of Visual Arts. He says, “Art saved my life.” COVID-19 WORK Deng, like most New Yorkers, didn’t think the city would end up in its current state. “I thought I’d stay at home and see what would happen, but every day it got worse.” Because his calligraphy tools SocialLifeMagazine.com

CULTURE VS PASSION “Sometimes I ask myself, Who am I? Do I follow my family’s rules as a Chinese man and son? Or do I follow my freedoms as an independent American artist?” Deng knows that Americans often say money can’t buy happiness and you should do what you love. When he graduated his friend told him that instead of making money, he “should make history; make art.” But Deng says this completely contradicts the beliefs of his culture, where chasing your dreams is a surefire way to end up broke. “In China, if you tell people you’re an artist, they think you’re weird,” Deng jokes. Fortunately, for art connoisseurs, this Chinese artist decided to “let down” his family for a couple of years, and in 2020 he wants to complete a series of ten works that encompass everything he’s learned during ten years of his life living in Bejing and the United States. Deng says, “I want to show people my journey.” linjiedeng.com

Her earliest memories are of fairs. “I learned to walk at Basel,” says Bscher, the Cologne-born, third-generation matriarch of one of Europe’s most important galleries, Zurich’s Galerie Gmurzynska. Founded in 1965 by her grandmother Antonina Gmurzynska, in Cologne, this gallery was the first to show the Russian avant-garde in the West, and in the 1980s the gallery became one of the most prominent dealers of both modern masters and contemporary artists like Yves Klein, Wifredo Lam, Louise Nevelson, Francesco Vezzoli, and Robert Indiana. “Our gallery is very focused on research,” says Bscher, who opened her family’s first New York gallery on 78th and Madison two years ago. “We have published over 200 books in the last 55 years and we have always had an interest in showing lesser-known aspects of artists. If you go back to the Russian avant-garde, they were all very multidisciplinary. So if someone was a designer, they were also an architect, painter, and teacher. One didn’t exclude the other.” ART WORLD SCION Naturally, a career as an art world scion has put her in contact with the glitterati. She’s friendly with the Picassos and the Mirós. She’s befriended Alexandre de Betak, the“Fellini of fashion,” and the late Zaha Hadid. She’s even curated shows with Baz Luhrmann and represented the photography of the late great Karl Lagerfeld. “He was the most spot-on funny, sophisticated person I have ever met,” she says. Her pedigree extends far beyond the art world. Her grandfather was the German banker and influential parliamentarian Robert Pferdmenges, who is credited with restoring Germany’s post-war economy via his seat as head of, what was at the time, the world’s largest private bank. Her uncle was once Germany’s gentleman “Tiger King,” operating the biggest private zoo in the country, complete with big cats and the most extensive private bird collection in Europe. Her grandmother was a racehorse mogul. Her banker father, Thomas Bscher, became the CEO of Bugatti and a racecar driver himself, winning the GT1 championship with a MacLaren. Her mother, Krystyna, advised the industrialist Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza on his art collection, which was second only to the British Royal Collection. Thyssen-Bornemisza was also, coincidently, Bscher’s godfather. Social Life

DURING THE PANDEMIC Perhaps it’s unnecessary to say that Bscher is supremely glamorous. But most recently, with global quarantines interrupting her routine of cosmopolitan conviviality, Bscher has discovered a more pedestrian joy: the jigsaw puzzle. “I have become a jigsaw maniac!” she says

from her family’s Zurich home, where she is spending time with her little Maltese, Lolli. “I just bought a romantic scene by a pond and another of a cottage in autumn. I like these kitschy nature scenes.” The Covid-19 pandemic forced Bscher to postpone a show with Anh Duong that was scheduled to open in Zurich. Meanwhile, she dove into uncharted territory by moving her New York Robert Indiana show online. “You really feel like you are walking around the gallery,” she says of the virtual exhibition of rarely seen works by Indiana (viewable at galleriesnow.net). “Indiana is one of those artists that looks great online too. You can really see the work.” Working from home has been challenging, she says, but, on the brighter side, it has given her respite from an aggressively peripatetic lifestyle.“I am reading a great biography of Howard Hughes and also these Victorian suspense novels by Willkie Collins,” she laughs. “I’ve surprised my friends by baking. It’s very cozy. But I think it’s time to get back to New York.” NEW SHOWS: PICASSO, MIRÓ, MALEVICH & WESSELMANN In May, Bscher opened three new shows in Switzerland now that social distancing restrictions have been lifted to allow 10 collectors at a time into her galleries. In Zurich, at Gurmyznska’s Talstrasse location, she has a group show titled femme fatale, which features female portraits by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Tom Wesselmann, Marjorie Strider, Robert Indiana, and two works by Ahn Duong, who will have her own solo exhibition later in the year. Across town in the gallery on Paradeplatz, she is showing a selection of 20th-century pieces by European artists, including Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, František Kupka, and Kurt Schwitters. In the city of Zug, Gmurzynska is exhibiting master and contemporary drawings by Kazimir Malevich, Pablo Picasso, James Ensor, Alexander Rodchenko, and Roberto Matta. In the fall, in NYC, she will show African art photographs by the renowned Jean Pigozzi, who is also her friend. This will be followed by a show featuring the works of the Chilean painter Roberto Matta, done during his time in New York after the Second World War. She says that she’s trying harder these days to call New York home. She’s even renovating an apartment in the Pierre to prove it. After all, it was always her grandmother’s dream to open in New York. “I want to honor her legacy here,” says Bscher. “I want to grow the gallery organically. I don’t want it to get so big that it becomes impersonal. I want to stay true to the art and the artists.” BETTING ON NYC Betting on a New York gallery despite the current hard times makes business sense, too. Bscher says that even before the coronavirus outbreak, she felt that interest in the big fairs was waning in favor of highly curated galleries. She isn’t confident that fairs will return post-Covid. “I don’t see art fairs happening this year at least,” she says. “Even before Covid, people were already tired of the fairs. There is a shift back to private galleries. Our gallery is very important to me. It’s an opportunity, a blessing, and a great responsibility to keep it going.” gmurzynska.com

ROBIN LEACOCK PBS DEBUTS HER NEW DOCUMENTARY By r. Couri hay

Robin Baker Leacock and Stella

Robin Baker Leacock and Robert Leacock

STELLA & CO: A ROMANTIC MUSICAL COMEDY DOCUMENTARY ABOUT AGING The filmmaker and philanthropist Robin Baker Leacock spent years recording her aging mother, Stella. Her mother was, after all, “a real character.” Stella enjoyed the music at her seasonal senior residence in Palm Beach and had great friendships. She wrote prolifically, producing two books in her 90s and five more after 100. She was opinionated to the end, and in her younger years, she had been a radio host and newspaper columnist. She also organized lectures with the likes of the writer-traveler Lowell Thomas and the Duke of Bedford. Leacock says that she couldn’t resist capturing her mother’s joie de vivre on camera. That footage is now available for everyone to enjoy via her new documentary Stella & Co: a Romantic Musical Comedy Documentary about Aging, which premiered on Mother’s Day on PBS across the country.

A PASSION FOR GIVING “When we lost my father, I decided that I wasn’t going to abandon my mother in her old age,” says Leacock, who splits her time between Sag Harbor and Palm Beach and has directed five films, including It Girls, A Passion For Giving, Stella Is 95, and I’ll Take Manhattan. “So for the last 17 years, I hung out with my mom. She always had an extraordinary love of life, and she was so full of spirit and charisma.” But what started as home video quickly escalated into something much bigger. Private conversations spent between mother and daughter were becoming a story with a universal message. “I started videoing her because she was so funny,” says Leacock. “It was hilarious. But I ended up with so much footage of her that I decided to bring in a professional cameraman and interview other elderly people, her friends, who I thought were really cool.” The resulting film — whose star, Stella, passed away at 103 Social Life

last year — is lighthearted and funny, when it isn’t touching, with a heavy dose of musical favorites courtesy of the talented musicians that frequently entertained the residents at Stella’s home. “We interviewed a poet, a man who basically invented the contact lens, a woman who did top-secret work at NASA, and a couple who had fallen in love in their late 80s,” says Leacock. She adds that what particularly struck her was how at odds the true lives of the elderly denizens of her mother’s apartment building were with the bleak assumptions many of us have about aging. “I wanted to know more about aging, and what I immediately found was a community of really interesting, cool people,” she says. “It was proof that no matter how old you are, you can still be stylish and amazing.” CINÉMA VÉRITÉ The characters in the film are certainly larger than life, but documentary fans will also be interested in the film’s connections to cinema greats. Leacock’s father-in-law is Richard Leacock, the documentarian who was among the few to invent cinéma vérité and filmed practically all of the 20th-century’s most fascinating people. Her husband is the director and cinematographer Robert Leacock, the man behind Madonna’s 1991 documentary Truth or Dare, to name but one of his many credits. GLOBAL COVID-19 PANDEMIC Perhaps it’s unsurprising then that a film about the brighter side of aging, which is so intentionally light, watchable, and amusing, would at the same time have something so important SocialLifeMagazine.com

to say in this world moment. The global Covid-19 pandemic has put the elderly at incredible risk. Nursing homes are being devastated even as families are quarantined apart. And Leacock’s film gives us reason to pause and understand just what it is that we are losing. “It’s an important time to pay respect to those who have paved the way for us,” Leacock says of this pandemic time. “The reality is that a lot of elderly people have been abandoned and don’t have a lot of contact with people. That’s not a generalization. Other cultures venerate their elders and we tend to toss them aside. I feel that the attitude our society has about older people is pretty much the same kind of stereotyping that people of a particular race or gender face.” Leacock recalls her mother’s annoyance at the amazed remarks she frequently received about her ability to walk, talk, or even know what day it was. “By abandoning our loved ones, it’s us, the younger people, who are losing out, because I know that I’ve had such a fabulous time with them,” says Leacock. “I miss a lot of them, and I certainly miss my mom.” ALL LIFE IS PRECIOUS Leacock hopes her film will remind viewers that all life is precious” and that old age is a very special time. “Maybe you do become a little less functional,” Leacock laughs. “But you become so much more brilliant in other ways. I think if people took the time to invest in shared moments with older people they would realize just how rewarding it is.” stelladocumentary.com

THE JEWELS OF THE HOME: LUXURY STONE AN INTERVIEW WITH FAME, THE STONE GURU OF THE HAMPTONS AND BEYOND By CECilia Dawn

F

ame, the owner of Fame Luxury Stone, sources spectacular — even rare — stones that adorn the homes of the rich and famous. In an industry known to be predominately dominated by men, this stunning beauty has become the go-to guru for all things luxury stone in the Hamptons (and elsewhere). At her Hamptons showroom and 30,000-square-foot warehouse in Connecticut, she’s cultivated quite a following for inimitable natural stone. She offers a broad selection of marble, quartzite, precious stone, unique granite, limestone, and so much more. Social Life sat down with Fame to get a sneak peek into what makes her so sought after. You’re known for sourcing rare and difficult-to-get stone. How do you do this? I travel the world to source the most aesthetically appealing selections. For me, natural stone possesses energy, and the ones I choose set off a gut feeling. It’s an obsession. For example, I’m constantly on the hunt for the best white natural stones. I have aisles of whites in my warehouse. I also love black stones and exotics. Most recently, I imported navy blue quartzite and lime green marble. My name was on both before I even touched down. My suppliers know what to set aside for me because they understand my sensibilities as well as my exacting standards. I choose only the best.

In the Hamptons, you’re known as the Rolls Royce of stone sourcing. How did you rise to this position in a male-dominated industry? Stone is in my DNA because I grew up with relatives who are some of the biggest brands in stone, and have been for generations. Yet, I think my superpower is that I’m a woman and I do things differently than men. When I entered the industry, I stayed focused and created my own lane. I do more than supply stone for projects; I get brought on to the team as a stone advisor, designer, and consultant. If you’re going to build a brand in the Hamptons, you better be ready to play on a very high level. Where do you source most of your materials? My brand is very much “Made in Italy.” Italy is the source for the majority of real luxury stone. Their experience in the stone industry over so many generations makes them the absolute SocialLifeMagazine.com

best in my opinion. Even when I buy stone elsewhere, I often have it sent to Italy for processing. A close second is South America, as there are some really exciting materials from that side of the earth. What do you love most about your job? Where do I begin? I love finding stone, importing it, and then seeing the artistic beauty it adds to a space. I’m known for saying “Stone is the jewelry of the home.” I love my clients and our bonding experience over stone. I feel like Lorraine Schwartz placing her designs on a celebrity going to the Met Gala. It may sound dramatic, but some of these luxury properties I work on are really that breathtaking. ELEGANT AFFAIRS HOW TO ENTERTAIN IN THE MIDST OF COVID-19 By JaCoB puCk

Andrea Correale

I

n the Hamptons and beyond, Elegant Affairs and its owner-founder, Andrea Correale, epitomize understated culinary luxury. The famous company is the go-to caterer for the elite, and you’d be hard-pressed to find any social, corporate, or non-profit event that wasn’t touched in some way by the wizardry of Andrea and her team. Well, as everyone knows, most of the aforementioned parties have been delayed. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t entertain — you can physically distance and still be social. Elegant Affairs has redefined agility during this uncertain time, continuing to bring gastronomical magic to the backyards and kitchens of homes across the region. According to Andrea, while there may be a shortage of events in the Hamptons early this season, there’s no shortage of people. The Hamptons is packed already, and the rental market is booming.

We caught up with Andrea for the 411 on how to make any event elegant in the age of Covid-19. You’re known for really taking care of people from a food and event standpoint. How are you helping out now? People are taking this seriously, and thinking about having smaller gatherings at their homes, with people they know very well. It’s all about staycations and smaller groups, and that’s where we come in. Think a clambake, or a day by the pool followed by a dinner. We are providing chefs and small staffs to make these events possible. Of course, we’re 100% committed and prepared for every element of physical distancing and safety, for our staff and your guests. For instance, we can set up a kitchen in a garage and never have to enter a house. Social Life

What about weddings? I’m sure there are a lot of disappointed brides. You’d think so, but people are taking a similar approach. They are still celebrating with smaller, more intimate gatherings at home, at least in the short term. This way, we have complete control over distancing and safety measures. I understand you are doing even more intimate gatherings, such as in-home meals. Absolutely! We pivoted very quickly, and we’re completely set-up for even the smallest ‘elegant affair.’ We started an on-line grocery store and grocery delivery (Grocery to Go), which people love. What I love, though, are our gourmet family dinners to go (Dinner Delivery). I call these three-course meals my ‘Tired of Take-out Campaign.’ SocialLifeMagazine.com

These gourmet meals are local, fresh, healthy, and don’t require any shopping or prep. Anything else you’d like to mention? I saved the best for last, our Party In A Box concept. These are for people who want great catered food that they can safely and easily put out for their close friends or loved ones, without any staff involved. They include everything you need, based on your desired theme: surf and turf, BBQ, California grill, or even brunch! There’s nothing we can’t do.
