NON-PROFIT SPOT LIGHT

La Unión Del Pueblo Entero Across race and background, Valley residents know our worth. We come together at barbecues and baptisms, plate sales, and bake sales to help each other through the hard times and celebrate the good ones. We work hard and treat each other right, just like we learned from our parents and their parents before them. What we have, we’ve gained through hard work and sacrifice. And when that hasn’t been enough, we’ve come together across differences to demand those who govern in our name recognize our worth and act in our interest—just like we joined together to win civil rights and better working conditions in the past. LUPE is proud to give hardworking RGV families a powerful tool toward the good life they are striving for: LUPE membership. LUPE is a community union that builds stronger, healthier communities where colonia residents and immigrant families use the power of civic engagement for social change. LUPE’s strength is found in our 8,000-person strong membership base from which leaders and volunteers are transforming themselves and their communities. Thanks to our membership program and the participation of our members, we have decades of experience offering affordable social services to our low-income community and organizing for a better quality of life in the Rio Grande Valley. Membership is the key to LUPE members’ ability to transform their communities. What starts as neighbors

helping neighbors transforms into neighbors identifying the challenges that hold us back, formulating solutions that will carry us forward together, and laying out plans to get there. Our members join together and pitch in membership dues towards a common cause. That’s how we provide social services and a staff attorney to assist our members with income tax and immigration-related services. That’s why our members come together to develop advocacy campaigns that bring improvements to their neighborhoods and communities. Together, LUPE members have won streetlights programs for Hidalgo County and Cameron County colonias, drainage improvements in Hidalgo County rural neighborhoods, protections against flooding in colonias, and Spanish language interpretation at Hidalgo County public meetings. By working hard and joining together to overcome barriers, we honor the sacrifices of our parents and past generations. Through LUPE membership, we can ensure every Valley resident has the freedom to make a good living, pursue our dreams, and build a good life.
