alloween might fall on the last day of the month, but let’s be honest, the festivities really begin on October 1. As I compose this note in early September, I’ve already noticed stores putting up their faux spider webs and Halloween-themed decorations, reminding me that I need to pick out a pumpkin soon and announcing that Pumpkin Spice Latte season has arrived! There are many ways to get in the Halloween spirit, so take a peek at page 8, where we’ve scared up a few spooktacular events happening around town‚ no costume required. We’ve mapped out a guide to exploring Downtown Los Angeles on page 10, which includes what to see,

Tucked off of Rodeo Drive, The Hideaway might have a famous zip code, but this new Mexican restau rant is anything but flashy. Baja-inspired interiors include a jewel box bar, where signature mar garitas and mezcal-infused cocktails crafted by legend ary L.A. bartender Julian Cox are poured. Request a table in the outdoor court yard, filled with natural lighting from a retractable roof. A firepit front and center will keep you warm on crisp evenings. Chef Michael Mina does it again. His latest concept in Hollywood, Mother Tongue, is a departure from the whitetablecloth Michelin-star restaurant he’s best known for, but the top-notch quality remains the same. For starters, it’s part of a high-end fitness and lifestyle club called Heimat, so naturally the menu is centered around healthful food that benefits your body and mind (read: fresh handpicked produce from local farmers markets). Choose from a selection of natural and sustainable wines that most likely won’t leave you with a massive hangover. The vegan soft-serve sundae is enough to convince you that healthy treats can also taste delicious. The restaurant, while tricky to find, is situated on a rooftop, so look forward to enjoying city views on the outdoor patio. 960 N. La Brea Avenue, 4th floor, Los Angeles, 213.319.7850

Hailing from Palm Springs, Workshop Kitchen & Bar makes its way to the city with the newest location now open on La Brea. The French-inspired concept fuses seasonal ingredients with bold techniques to create a five-course tasting menu for $90 with feature dishes including a halibut

with bouillabaisse, braised artichokes and gnocchi, and Neapolitan-style piz zas made in a MarraForni wood-burning oven. The elevated cocktail program also uses market fresh in gredients to craft cocktails that are (almost) too pretty to drink. Try the Lemon grass Colada for a refresh

This page: Street art in the Arts

CALLING ALL POP culture and architecture enthusiasts! The Bradbury Building — famously featured in the first Blade Runner film (1982), numerous TV shows, movies, music videos, and books—is a must-see. Lewis Bradbury, Sr., a gold-mining millionaire and real-estate magnate, commissioned architect Sumner Hunt to design this fivestory office structure on the corner of West 3rd and Broadway in 1892. Hunt’s draftsman, George Wyman, competed he job when Hunt was let go. Today the Bradbury Building is the city center’s oldest commercial build ing and an architectural landmark. Drive-by viewings of the Italian Renaissance brick facade don’t do it justice. You must step in side to behold a dreamlike atrium of intricate iron balustrades, open bird-cage elevators, and marble stairwells, all beneath a glass ceiling that bathes the interior in golden light. Sadly, Bradbury died before construction was completed and never had a chance to marvel at the building’s wonder. Grab lunch at the

Truly one of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods, DTLA covers nearly 6 square miles and is flanked by the neighborhoods of Echo Park to the north, Boyle Heights to the east, Vernon to the south, and Westlake to the west., This urban area has a diverse foodie scene and is a worthy destination for cultural events, art, remarkable architecture, historic landmarks, and unique shopping opportunities.

SINCE 1917, GRAND Central Market (GCM)—formerly known as the Wonder Market— has offered a taste of the city’s culinary delights. OG vendors like China Café and Roast to Go as well as up-and-comers of the L.A. food scene fill 40 stalls that churn out some of the best grub in town. Get your daily jolt at G&B Coffee, the brainchild of former Intelligentsia baristas and Go Get ‘Em Tiger founders, Kyle Glanville (the G) and Charles Babinski (the B). The 360-degree coffee bar is the perfect perch to peoplewatch and sip espresso drinks, hop-infused carbonated iced tea, and coffee milkshakes, made with ice cream from another GCM ven dor, McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams. At Sarita’s Pupuseria, owner Sara Clark uses her Salva dorean family’s recipes to prepare mouth watering pockets of griddled masa stuffed with beans, cheese, pork, or vegetables. CROWNED “THE WORLD’S Shortest Rail way,” this wee funicular travels only about 300 feet from Hill Street to Grand Avenue. Sure, you could take the stairs and save $1, but the Angels Flight twin railway cars (named Sinai and Olivet) are so cute and selfie-ready, they’re worth a spin. A bit of his tory: In 1901, Colonel J.W. Eddy, a politician and pal of Abraham Lincoln, financed The Los Angeles Incline Railway, later rechris tened Angels Flight. Back in the day, the sta tion was located a block away and the cars transported commuters up the steep incline that connects Hill Street to Olive Street in the tiny neighborhood of Bunker Hill. Designated a Los Angeles Cultural Monument in 1962, the station shut down soon after due to rede velopment plans. Sinai and Olivet went into hibernation for 27 years until 1996, when the little twin cars were reenlisted for duty at the current location. It’s easy to hop on after lunch at the GCM and ride the railway up to Grand Avenue to visit the Broad museum.
