This World Premiere comedic fantasy transforms a ski resort during the off-season into a strangely magical environment of self-discovery. Playwright Richard Strand (of last season’s smash-hit, Ben Butler) poses questions of identity and perception in this funny and insightful new work. You will find yourself laughing out loud and simultaneously examining the hopes and dreams of your own life experiences. A joyous night at the theatre.

That time-honored adage, “The Show Must Go On,” takes on new meaning in this endearing and moving comedy set at a small American playhouse in 1942. With the actors and director off at war, a group of passionate women face the daunting challenge of preserving the theatre’s reputation for mounting outstanding Shakespearean productions. Crammed with laughs and an abundance of visual humor, their fierce determination and unbridled enthusiasm will have audiences cheering as they prove that art and community triumph, even in times of peril. 13 BY DIANA VAN FOSSEN COAST northcoastrep.org sales: 858-481-2155,

“THEATER IS BACK!” says Barry Edelstein exuberantly. And with two world premieres coming to The Old Globe in September, he means it.

The first is based on one of the most popular Bollywood films in history; the second on a short story by a prizewinning American author. Edelstein admits he wasn’t a Bollywood aficionado. “It’s been a big hole in my cultural life,” he says. “But when we were contacted about producing this show, I read it, I listened to it, and I loved it. I knew it would be a unique, very exciting collaboration between the very best of Broadway and the very best of Bollywood.”

THE PLAY

Adi is a titan of global cinema, one of the most impact ful storytellers at work anywhere in world. It dazzles me that he’s making his stage debut at the Globe, join ing the ranks of the great American practitioners of theatre art who have worked here. Adi has assembled a team of collaborators that is equally dazzling. From his Bollywood rolodex, he called Shruti Merchant, a giant in Bollywood choreography; Vishal Dadlani and Sheykhar Ravjiani, songwriters of Lennon–McCa rtney stature in India; and Akhila Krishnan, a major international video artist. Adi then connected with the Globe and our partner, the visionary producer Adam Zotovich, to recruit a murderers’ row of Broad way talents. Nell Benjamin, one of the most exciting writers on Broadway, translates DDLJ to America with her glorious comic sensibility, profound intelligence, and linguistic deftness. Choreographer Rob Ashford is a legendary talent whose whimsical sensibility has changed how we think about dance on Broadway. David Holcenberg, who recently brought the music of Michael Jackson to Broadway, knows an awful lot about how to meld the sounds of pop and theatre. The visual designers in every discipline are Tony Award reg ulars (and among them are three Globe regulars we’re thrilled to welcome back: Derek McLane, Linda Cho, and Japhy Weideman). The work this constellation of artists brings to the Globe is at the very highest level of achievement. As you’re about to discover, the cast of the show is also topflight, the very best of two coun tries. Come Fall in Love charts new territory for the Globe. We’re happy about it, and grateful for it. Thanks for coming. Enjoy the show.

PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P3

Come Fall in Love is directed here by Aditya Chopra, the writer/director of DDLJ. As he revisits this story that has so defined his artistic and professional lives, he reimagines it for a new audience and a new gener ation, and he renews its power to beguile. But he does something else that we at the Globe find extraordinary and galvanizing, especially in the context of our com mitments to represent more, and more diverse, cul tures on our stages. Adi places India center stage in the American theatre, where it’s rarely been before, and the Globe is grateful for the chance to embody our core values through this magical musical.

India is a long way from San Diego, and while the South Asian population is one of the fastest-growing in Southern California, that country of 1.4 billion is unfa miliar to many Americans. Bollywood, one of the great est film cultures in the world, produces about 1,000 films every year, and DDLJ (the acronymic title for the megahit film on which tonight’s show is based) is a movie that has no parallel in American culture: a block buster entertainment that’s revered and cherished not only for its own countless delights but also as a kind of cultural talisman, a groundbreaking exploration of Indian identity that speaks across the generations as it delivers a gentle and sweet story of star-crossed love, family, and tradition. And music. And dance. It’s all that onstage, too. But live and in front of us, DDLJ works in new and different ways. Its Indian ex pat family is in the U.S. now, not in the U.K. as in the film. The American immigrant experience, always laced with the struggle between tradition and assimilation, shifts the story’s center of gravity, as does the musical’s focus on Simran, the heroine, who here has a degree of agency that her movie-house incarnation doesn’t always. And Come Fall in Love’s songs lift DDLJ to an other dimension. Musical numbers in the theatre have a narrative function that’s unlike what songs do in the wild spectaculars of Bollywood. That, for me, is a par ticular triumph of this film-to-stage adaptation: just as it melds India and America, so it combines two related but distinct modes of musical storytelling to make a third thing, fresh and unique. The sound of this musi cal is sui generis and special.

FROM BARRY

Any feedback on tonight’s show or any of the Globe’s work?  Email Barry at HiBarry@TheOldGlobe.org and he’ll get back to you!

Today’s world premiere production, Come Fall in Love – The DDLJ Musical, graces our stage just as The Old Globe reaches a milestone in our distinguished history of making new musicals. Almost Famous, which played here in 2019, is about to open on Broadway and be come the Globe’s 25th show to do so. We are a local institution first, bringing great theatre to the people of San Diego. But it’s nice to revel now and then in the glitter and glamor of our national prominence.

And tonight we become an international theatre. Come Fall in Love is many superb things, but above all it’s a collaboration between India and the U.S., a fusion of Bollywood and Broadway. It’s a bridge connecting Mumbai to San Diego, and a meeting place for two beautiful and rich cultures. It’s the biggest show the Globe has ever undertaken, and it opens this theatre to a world beyond the seas, and to artists and ideas whose presence here moves us, broadens us, and honors us.

Shruti, you’ve choreographed for both film and theatre. What are the differences between the two media? Is there one you prefer?

Vishal and Sheykhar: DDLJ is not so much just a film, it’s more a modern cultural standpoint in India. This is a story that has defined romance for more than just one generation of Indians. We’re excited by the opportunity to tell the same story in an entirely new language and idiom, with entirely new music, to an almost entirely new audience. The idea is not to translate the film, but to craft an even more inclusive, global retelling that brings us all together in the commonality of human emotion.

Vishal and Sheykhar, is this your first theatrical musical? How is the process different from working on a film?

Associate choreographer Shruti Merchant joins composers Vishal Dadlani and Sheykhar Ravjiani (popularly known as Vishal and Sheykhar) to discuss bringing the beloved Indian film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ) to life in a whole new way.

Shruti Merchant: The film released in 1995, and as an 11-year-old girl, I have a vivid memory of my parents bringing home an autographed DDLJ clock, which they had won while watching the film among hundreds of people in a cinema hall. DDLJ is not just a film, it’s an experience. The amazing chemistry between Raj and Simran, the picturesque Euro trip with friends (no parents invited), the classic melodies and tunes that bridged the emotions and iconic dialogues—those are a few memories that make it a timeless classic that you want to keep watching again and again. Bringing India’s national film, an epic love story, to the stage is a once-ina-lifetime opportunity that I would never want to miss.

SM: I would want our audiences to come and celebrate a love story of two cultures. Come and experience a love story of two worlds. Come fall in love! 

What are your memories of the original film? What drew you to this project?

VS: That at our cores, there is no difference between people, cultures, or generations that can’t be overcome by love. That love makes us stronger, brings people together, and sometimes brings the world to India and India to the world.

SM: The main difference is the relationship between the artists and the audience. Films are about moving images, theatre is about moving emotions. However, both offer story told in a dramatic form, and that’s what I love the most: telling stories through music and movement. The majority of my work is in theatre, but I enjoy seeing it through the camera too at times.

VS: Yes, this is our first theatrical musical, and it really is an entirely different world from the 75 films and 350 songs we’ve composed. When we work on a film, we go from script to idea to recording to finished product. Here, everything breathes. The music is alive. It changes form, almost as if the story is composing or arranging it to suit each character and each scene. We’re really enjoying the collaborative nature of how everything, from each line of dialogue to the movement and choreography, affects the way a song is constructed. Working with all of that as it grows is something we are loving thoroughly and learning a lot from. What would you like an American audience to take away from this piece?

DDLJ was one of the first mainstream Bollywood films to delve into the community of the Indian diaspora and place it at the center of the story. The film explores the anxieties in the diaspora community of losing the connection to home and culture. It brings up ideas of individual desire versus familial obligations, and the continuation of traditional Indian values in the diaspora community. In an unusual move, DDLJ said that these things were actually compatible, that being raised outside of India did not mean a loss of Indian culture and values. It also said that there was a world where family obligations and individual desire could live together, rather than one being to the detriment of the other. In the film, the male lead, played by Shah Rukh Khan, says, “I am a Hindustani,” a label that transcends space to indicate something deeper than physical location or citizenship. While the children of the diaspora are seen as embracing the idea of a hybrid culture, there are certain things that are never in question, such as respect, tradition, and duty. DDLJ gave a voice to the sprawling non-resident Indian (NRI) community and its desire to hold on to traditional Indian values in new and distant locations.

A Brief History of DDLJ

PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P7

By Sonia Desai Come Fall in Love is a theatrical musical adaptation of the incredibly popular Bollywood film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (often shortened to DDLJ), which was released in 1995. The film was written and directed by Aditya Chopra and stars two of the most beloved Bollywood actors, Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Though this film was Chopra’s first film, it is now the longestrunning Hindi film of all time, as theatres across the world continue to play the fan favorite—the Maratha Mandir cinema in Mumbai has been showing the film for over 25 years. It is also one of the most influential Bollywood movies of all time.

What is an NRI?

A non-resident Indian, or NRI, is a person of Indian descent who is living outside the country of India. Specifically, the Indian government uses this term to identify Indian citizens who do not live in the country for tax and property reasons. More colloquially, it has been used to provide a shorthand for the connection that the members of the Indian diaspora have to the country and culture. As we see in Come Fall in Love, this relationship is often emotional. For those who have left India, their status as NRIs can be a reminder of what they’ve left behind and what they are missing. But it is also a promise of welcome when they return, a promise that, though they may be far away, they have a place waiting for them in India. What is an NRI?

I am an “ABCD”—an “American-Born Confused Desi.” It is a label that has followed me throughout my life, one derisively applied to those of us born in America to Indian parents.

When I was a teenager, several of our relatives from India came to visit for a few weeks. It was the first time any of my mother’s siblings had come to America and, therefore, especially significant. My mother had every meal organized, the house was spotless, sightseeing and weekend road trips were all arranged. My mother had been a strict vegetarian when she lived in India. So we were to be vegetarian the entire time our Indian relatives visited us.

P8 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE THE PLAY

What did this ABCD expect out of life? As a child, in small-town Weatherford, Texas, where Wranglers and steak are cultural staples, I assumed that my friends would view me as White, as American, because that was how I saw myself, despite my mother’s saris and Indian curries. When I looked in a mirror, I saw the black, thick hair and the brown tinge to my skin magically disappear. As a teenager, I wanted a mother and father who attended high school football games. As a young adult, I dreamed of walking down the aisle in a white wedding dress toward a faceless, but Caucasian, American man. I carried these expectations, but not a single one was ever fulfilled. Instead, my hair and skin color became more apparent, my mother’s saris became my own, and I sometimes watch football with my Indian husband. I am part of a generation that lives within the hyphen. We are American, born to immigrant parents. We are the first in our families to attend college in America. We fall in love, celebrate holidays, tend to sick parents, and endure loss just like any American family. But our experiences are intertwined with the presence of another culture and its expectations and a push and pull of both of those cultures, neither of which we can fully absorb.

The term conveys that all of us who are American-born have no understanding of what it means to truly be Indian, or Desi. It used to make me feel inferior, that designation. It was not until adulthood that I began to embrace the label. I was in fact born in America. And yes, I am confused.

Sneaking Out for a Burger with My Indian Dad

By Shaila Kapoor

It was hard for Texans in the early ’80s to understand or relate to anyone who didn’t eat steak or hamburgers. Eventually, my mother forced herself to eat meat so that I would grow up eating it. But she had never mentioned her decision to her parents or siblings back home.

Our visiting family had no idea we ate meat, and I was strictly warned not to give it away. No mention of eggs by accident, no discussion of turkey sandwiches that I sometimes ate for lunch, or my favorite chicken enchiladas. My mother had planned

It was completely dark now, and we rushed to the store to get the items my moth er had sent us for and to get home. I heard my father laugh out loud as he opened the car door for me. In a near whisper, he said, “You’re American. Why not?” 

Excerpted from “Sneaking Out for a Burger with My Indian Dad,” published in The New York Times on June 28, 2019. Shaila Kapoor (www.shailawrites. com) writes about family, identity, and culture and is working on a memoir that explores these themes.

“Never mind what she will say. We won’t tell her.”

I wonder if his journey made him understand that I could not possibly grow up as his mother, sister, and even his wife had. That I too would have to have different ways, different traditions, a different definition of culture. Maybe he wanted to show me that it was okay. Maybe there was a part of him that could relate. We hardly ever went to Braum’s, a popular burger place in town, the epitome of American food. We didn’t really eat hamburgers. In fact, fast food was not a concept my parents condoned. But I think my father and I needed some time away, some time together, and something profoundly not Indian that day.

One Saturday evening, a few weeks into the visit, my mother sent me and my father to the grocery store to pick up some items before dinner. “Don’t be too long,” she warned as we walked out to the garage. We sat in the car, both of us enjoying the silence after weeks of entertaining. The planning, the late nights, the weeks of altered home life had been intense. We were weary. I admitted to it first. “I’m really tired of all the Indian food.” My father smiled knowingly before replying. “What do you think? Want to go to Braum’s and get a hamburger?” My father lost his parents when he was 15, after which he and his three other siblings supported themselves in dire circumstances. Somewhere along the way he left religion and found a way to go to medical school. In America, he drank coffee instead of the prescribed tea of his culture. After I was born, there was a miniature tree for Christ mas, costumes for Halloween, swimsuits in the summer.

all kinds of Indian delicacies—there were special daals, stuffed vegetables, curries, homemade yogurt, rotis, amazing desserts.

He parked in the restaurant lot and we walked in, his arm around my waist. Once inside, we paused at the counter to regard the menu, finally choosing for one another what each would like. We sat at a corner booth by the window, both of us with our hamburgers and an order of fries between us. Those first few bites were the best, tasting of conspiracy and America. We laughed together at our small deceit. We couldn’t afford to stay too long. Already the sun was beginning to set and my mother was sure to get suspicious. But it was just enough of a break. Our minds were free once again, each of us feeling as if we had done it for the other. We walked out holding hands, bound in solidarity, still in disbelief about what we had just done.

“Really? What will Mom say?”

The result was a studentcreated original musical theatre show called Fearless in which five teenagers discover that it is okay to face and accept your fears as you learn how to be your true self. As part of the four-week camp, students found themselves discovering how to write their own theatrical story with the help of a seasoned playwright; how to run lights and sound for their school theatre with professional guidance from one of the nation’s largest regional theatres; and how to collaborate and connect with others through improvisation techniques. Students devised the story and rehearsed and performed the show for their community. Meanwhile, the technical theatre students built props and scenery, designed costumes, and ran lights and sound for the Thisperformance.workwasled by a team of Old Globe Teaching Artists, who are dedicated to community building and fostering creative exploration in young people. Playwright Gill Sotu facilitated student conversations and curated their writing to help develop a story based on a student-selected theme. When students weren’t writing and sharing their own stories, they were rehearsing musical theatre numbers to include in the show with co-directors Randall Eames and Valeria Vega. Designer Mayté Martinez and improv performer Veronica Burgess were also on hand to give students tools to increase confidence and spark imagination. These Teaching Artists exemplified our theatre’s belief that student-centered and student-led work is essential to building meaningful community. This work matters because it gives young people the tools to tell their own stories with conviction and commitment. With access to professional artists through camps such as these, young people discover that creative exploration and expression are a means to building confidence, curiosity, collaboration, and community. The future of musical theatre is being sparked in a new generation as they learn that all stories, and especially theirs, matter.  (above) VAPA Camp students with Teaching Artists Valeria Vega and Veronica Burgess. Photos by Valeria Vega.

A young protagonist seeks reconciliation with her deported father. Another discovers his true identity as a confident young man in a coming-ofage drama. And the loss of a loved one shakes a close-knit community to its core as told through the eyes of a 14-year-old girl who is falling in love for the first time. These may sound like classic Shakespeare texts, or even the plot of the latest hit Broadway musical. But they are actually the stories being told by middle school students who spent this past summer devising an original musical theatre piece based on their own personal stories as part of a visual and performing arts camp at Wilson Middle School in the City Heights

PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE 13

From Caribbean cuisine in Little Italy, to burgers by the beach in La Jolla, to confections in Coronado, we’ve rounded up an eclectic mix of both new restaurants and estab lished local gems with new reasons to visit—all inviting you to step out of your culinary comfort zone this fall. The rewards are delicious.

SURPRISESPLEASANT MAYACOCOCOURTESY DINING

| Coco Maya | Be transported to the tropics without leaving Little Italy. Think of Coco Maya as the more sophisticated sibling to the popular Miss B’s Coconut Club in Mission Beach—centered on locally sourced, Yucatán-inspired cuisine. Grind & Prosper Hospitality’s new outpost is an airy, indoor/outdoor retreat—with plenty of shaded alfresco dining, muted turquoise accents, walls lined with Latin American-inspired artwork and pottery, lush greenery, and macramé-fringed umbrellas. We’d call it “modern Caribbean chic.” On the daily brunch menu: a selection of bokits, stuffed fry bread from the French Islands of Gua deloupe; Jamaican Saturday soup; Steak Empanizado; and cocktails Cochinita Pibil at Coco Maya

Among Our Favorite Fall Food Finds, These Quaint Outposts Offer Unexpected Delights by SARAH DAOUST

Tahona | After a two-year hiatus, weekend brunch is back at Tahona. The Old Town outpost is well known for its extensive inventory of mezcals, Oaxacan-inspired seasonal dishes, and tacos with hand-pressed tortillas. Brunch dishes by chef Adrian Villareal include the smoked-adobada-turkey burrito; the Spanish frittata with Iberico chorizo; and the vegetarian Green Good ness taco with grilled nopal, leeks and greens on a Tehachapi Heritage Grain Project tortilla. Grab a seat on the quaint street-side patio for a side of fun people-watching. 2414 San Diego Ave., Old Town, 619.255.2090 such as the Morning Trap Mojito and Frozen Caribe Coffee with spiced rum. Come back for dinner and try the smashed cucumber salad; young coconut aguachile; and Cochinita Pibil, marinated suckling pig wrapped in banana leaves and cooked in clay, with a side of grilled plantains. 1660 India St., Little Italy, 619.848.7414

Jeffs’ Beach Burgers | Jeff Jacobs, owner of Rancho Valencia Resort, loves a good burger by the beach— so much so that he opened his own burger bar near his La Jolla Shores home. (In fact, if you notice the apostrophe placement in the busi ness name, two Jeffs are actually in volved. Jacobs and his business part ner Jeffrey Essakow grew up eating at the original Jeff’s Burgers, which closed after 40 years in business.)

2134 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla, 888.535.2227 | Cesarina | Known for its delectable build-your-own pasta bowls and full vegan menu, the beloved neigh borhood trattoria offers seasonal dishes inspired by chef Cesarina Mezzoni’s ongoing travels. urging of Nora Ephron and under the direction of Barry Edelstein both in New York and at The Old Globe—Englander once again brings an awardwinning short story to life for the Riffingstage.offthe title of a short story by Raymond Carver, What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank is about two women—best friends in high school, who as adults live on opposite sides of the globe—who are experiencing wildly different cultures, religion and family life. Coming together for a visit, they find their tested—notfriendshiponlyby the distance that has grown between them but also by their husbands, who don’t get along. It’s an inti mate look at what makes marriages work and friendships last ... or not.

wrong’ genre of comedy,” Edelstein says. “You put two couples together in a confined space and add liquor, and all hell breaks loose.” The couples in the play are Jewish—one Reform American, the other back in the U.S. for a visit after years living a more orthodox life in Israel. “While the story is specific to the world of American and Israeli Jews, the themes are not parochial,” Edelstein says. “It’s about achiev ing universality through specificity. Who hasn’t had the experience of old friends getting together and seeing how they have changed? It’s about mar riage and family, about how we communicate our traditions to our children. We can all relate to that.”

The title of both the short story and the play refers to a game the girls used to play, guess ing which non-Jews they knew would give them up if there were a second Holocaust. “In being adapted from the short story, the play has become much more about what it is to be alive in our chaotic moment,” Edelstein says. “There are moments of slapstick, but then it becomes very emotional. It’s about the anxiety of living a Jewish life these days, but also an American life.”
