SUCCESSION
IT ISN’T OFTEN that Los Angeles Philharmonic audiences can experience the visions of three of its leaders in as many months. Current music director Gustavo Dudamel leaves to assume that post at the New York Philharmonic in 2026; conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen helmed the L.A. Phil from 1992 to 2009; conductor emeritus Zubin Mehta led it from 1962 to 1978. March 2-5, Mehta conducts Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique and— with alto Gerhild Romberger and women’s and children’s choruses—Mahler’s Symphony No. 3. May 18-21, Salonen oversees the U.S. premiere of his Sinfonia concertante for organ and orchestra, an L.A. Phil commission, plus Stravinsky’s Petrushka and Bartok’s The Miraculous Mandarin. May 25-27, Dudamel takes the podium for world premieres of two L.A. Phil commissions, Ellen Reid’s West Coast Sky Eternal and Gabriella Smith’s Lost Coast, and for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7.
