Current music director Gustavo Dudamel leaves to assume that post at the New York Philharmonic in 2026; conductor laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen helmed the L.A. THE FRANK LLOYD Wrightdesigned Hollyhock House, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, presents its first “artist intervention,” Entanglements: Louise Bonnet and Adam Silverman at Hollyhock House. The showing, through May 27, features new work inspired by and “in dialogue with” the site. Bonnet is known for portraits with grotesque features and exaggerated proportions on canvas or paper,

Composer Reena Esmail’s Western and Indian classical music creates connections among cultures, performers and audiences.

When composer Reena

Esmail received a commission from the Los Angeles Master Chorale as its Swan Family Artist-In-Residence, she considered potential subject matter. After ruling out Covid-19 and women’s issues, she hit upon a topic that people living in drought-affected Los Angeles could relate to: a requiem for water. The work—about 30 minutes in length, untitled at press time—has its world premiere at the ensemble’s March 26 concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall downtown; it’s paired with Gabriel Fauré’s 19th-century Requiem in D minor.

“We’re here in Southern California, and all of us are deeply affected by the fact that water is becoming scarcer and scarcer,” says Esmail, who grew up in L.A. after moving from her native Chicago at age three. She earned a bachelor’s degree in composition from Juilliard and a master’s and doctorate from Yale.

“I thought, what better way to really talk about this issue than to bring love

and care, and the mourning of the loss of that water, to a piece of music.”

Esmail’s inspiration came while attending a poetry reading by William O’Daly, known for his English translations of works by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda; O’Daly has written poems about water loss and is the lead writer for the California Department of Water Resources’ Water Plan. She reached out to O’Daly. “The requiem is a combination of Latin requiem [mass for the dead] texts, [O’Daly’s] English texts and a few Indian texts as well.”

The Indian texts will be sung by Esmail’s longtime collaborator, Saili Oak; the chorale orchestra is joined by Indian musician Abhiman Kaushal on the tabla, two drums played by hand. Unlike Western classical music, Indian music has little notation and is primarily improvised. The result, Esmail says, is more complex melody and rhythm than can be accomplished in a printed score.

Indian music, she says, is “a matter of understanding a tradition and the ways that it works to its practitioners, then finding ways that those [elements] align.”

Aligning those two cultures through music has been the goal of Esmail, the daughter of Indian immigrants, throughout her career.

“As I got further into classical music,” she recalls, “I realized it would pull me further and further away from my Indian culture if I didn’t do something to be that connector. I started this journey of trying to understand Indian classical music, and trying to find ways I could bridge those

gaps—mostly because I loved being in both cultures, and I wanted both cultures to experience one another.”

Esmail received a 2011-’12 Fulbright-Nehru grant to study Hindustani music in India; experiencing the monsoon season there influenced her when writing her rain requiem for the chorale. She is a co-founder of Shastra, a nonprofit that promotes IndianWestern musical connections.

There’s a hint of destiny in Esmail’s connection to the Master Chorale: Her experience with choral music in L.A. began when she was a child attending St. Charles Borromeo Church in North

Hollywood, whose longtime music director Paul Salamunovitch led the Master Chorale from 1991 to 2001.

She recalls the wonder of hearing the church choir perform Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, a 1994 Chorale commission, when she was 11. “It’s just amazing,” she marvels. “Morten wrote that piece when he was in the artist-inresidence position I’m in now!”

Esmail has held the position since 2020. She met chorale artistic director Grant Gershon at a choral conference where her work This Love Between Us was performed; they discovered they shared similar values and /CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

So… DID YOU SEE WHAT WALTER PAISLEY DID TODAY?

Creating new work – from the blank page to the full stage – is always the most daunting, but frequently the most exciting, of theatrical endeavors. The journey is full of twists, U-turns, blind alleys, and – one hopes – a green light or two.

Randy Rogel, the multi-Emmy Award-winning composer/lyricist, brought the idea of the show to La Mirada Theatre just about three years ago. (I say “just” because, given the realities of play production these days, three years could be considered warp speed.) Randy and I had known each other for 20 years, when, wearing his actor hat, he played the lead in a rare but joyous 1915 Jerome Kern musical I directed at the Goodspeed Opera House. I mention this because that show, now that I look back, has some things in common with this show: it had a small cast, a brisk pace, a cornucopia of melody, and, we hope, that increasingly vanishing theatrical ingredient – charm. Now, how Kern arrived at his destination and how we arrived at ours a century later couldn’t be more different, since our show would be the kind of dark comedy that wasn’t in vogue in his day.

In Spring of 2020, La Mirada Theatre’s smallbut-mighty staff gathered on an empty stage to hear Randy’s first draft of Act I, and, based on their enthusiasm and positive input from the actors, we embarked on a series of internal readings to finish the show. As they say: musicals aren’t written, they’re rewritten – and the gifted performers who brought those developmental drafts to life deserve an ongoing standing ovation. Finally, we presented the show to newcomers – first, our beloved ushers (who are also discerning theatregoers) and then our valued subscribers in a concert reading in October 2021. Their further encouragement led the City of La Mirada to do something it hadn’t yet done in its already-impressive history of supporting the Arts: give the Theatre the opportunity to present a musical that it had developed from the ground up. For that, we will always be deeply grateful, and we imagine that everyone who loves the Arts feels the same.

Of course, the fact that so many magnificently talented theatre artists jumped on board – stellar designers, musical wizards, choreographic creators, and actors from Broadway and Los Angeles – working with the tireless producer Kevin Bailey (MB Artists) – has made the journey even more rewarding.

It’s a show with a long title – and a question.

But it’s one we’ve enjoyed answering.  Here’s hoping you will, as well.

RANDY ROGEL (Book, Music & Lyrics) has won three Emmy Awards (nominated for ten), a Peabody Award, two Annie Awards, three Leo Awards, and an Ovation Award. Randy spent nine years on staff at Warner Bros. writing for such shows as “Batman,” Steven Spielberg’s “Animaniacs,” “Pinky and the Brain,” and at Disney Television he wrote and composed for  Monsters Inc., Peter Pan, Cinderella , Winnie the Pooh , Tarzan , The Seven Dwarves, and  101 Dalmatians. Randy is a West Point graduate with ten years of service as an officer in the combat arms. He has a BS in Engineering from the academy and a Master’s Degree in International Relations from Boston University.

BT McNICHOLL (Director) has been on the original creative teams of a dozen Broadway shows, including the Tony-winning hits Billy Elliot, Cabaret, and Spamalot, as the Associate Director

for Sam Mendes, Jerry Zaks, Stephen Daldry, David Hare, Rob Marshall, and the legendary Mike Nichols. Internationally, McNicholl won the Helpmann (the Australian Tony Award) for Best Direction and staged the European premiere of The Producers for Mel Brooks. A BMI awardwinning writer, his musicals have played OffBroadway (“The IT Girl” supervised by Tony winner Jerry Zaks), on national tour, and Madison Square Garden. He has developed new work at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center and directed award-winning productions for The Goodspeed Opera House (Best Musical), Walnut Street Theatre (Kleban Award), and Ogunquit Playhouse (Moss Hart Award). Additionally, he has directed at the Hollywood Bowl, was a Development Consultant for MGM On Stage, spent three years with the Shubert Organization, and wrote for the Associated Press Newswire.

Originally from Oceanside, his designs have been seen on both coasts and internationally. Ryan graduated from UCLA with a BA in Lighting, Sound, and Projection Design and is currently pursuing his MFA in Lighting Design at NYU.

ARAN DE LA PEÑA (Puppet Designer) is the founder and CEO of Pro Puppet Makers, a leader in puppet and practical effects design both on screen and stage. Theatrically, Aran has designed for Disney Theatrical, Pixar, and Dreamworks, among others. His designs are featured on Disney+ in both Encanto Live and Coco Live at the Hollywood Bowl, multiple shows for ABC, FOX, Netflix, and HBO, along with several commercials and music videos. Aran works with his team of artists out of his

workshop in Orange County, who continue to strive to bring innovation and novelty to productions worldwide.

I’ve been working in props for 20 years, freelance until finding a home as Props Supervisor for CTSA at UCI in 2013. I fell in love with theater in the late 1980s as an audience member and unexpectedly found a way to make it a career. The creative, collaborative, exciting, and challenging world of theater makes my heart sing!

MICHAEL POLAK ( Fight Director ) has choreographed stage violence for South Coast Rep, La Mirada Theatre, North Coast Repertory Theatre, 3D-Theatricals, New Swan Shakespeare Festival, CSUF, Concordia University, and others as well. GENE O’DONOVAN (Technical Director) was the founder of Hudson Scenic Studio in 1980 and its President until 1994 when he left to pursue Production Management on a full-time basis as Aurora Productions. He retired in 2015 but remains a consultant. Gene taught Production Management at SUNY Purchase (20 years) and Columbia University (five years). He is presently a consultant to the Nederlander Organization on the renovation of the Palace Theater in NYC. He is the recipient of the Broadway Masters and Legends Award and a Tony Honors Award for Excellence in the Theater.

Designer Caren Rideau’s passion for family, food and wine inspires her kitchen designs at a time when homeowners are rediscovering the space.

CAREN RIDEAU SPECIALIZES in reimagining the room whose versatility has become so much more appreciated in recent years: the kitchen.

In her new book, Caren Rideau: Kitchen Designer, Vintner, Entertaining at Home, Rideau conveys her emotional connection with the space. Her family’s Mexican and Louisianan heritage, and nostalgic memories of preparing tamales or gumbo with relatives, inspires her

Rideau is a native Angeleno whose Pacific Palisades studio, Kitchen Design Group, is favored by homeowners across the Westside but draws a national clientele.

The passionate home cook also co-founded Tierra y Vino winery in the Santa Ynez Valley with her partner, Andrés Ibarra, a veteran winemaker. Her love of food and wine

has consistently informed her threedecade specialization in kitchens.

When initiating client relationships, Rideau says, “I want to get to know them, how their family interacts in the kitchen and how many people are involved in the cooking.” She notes that priorities have changed since the pandemic. “People became more aware of the functionality of appliances, what special equipment they need for entertaining and what space their kids might require for homework.“

As a result, more family members get involved in these decisions.

According to Rideau, she addresses space planning and functionality first, then builds aesthetics upon that foundation; she constantly seeks input from the homeowners.

“I like my clients to get involved, to feel part of the process,” she states, embracing a collaborative approach that makes some designers apprehensive. “Ultimately, I’m going to leave and they’re going to be left with the product.”

diverse textures; and the use of decorative lighting fixtures to create a homey vibe.

In Pacific Palisades, Rideau satisfied her client’s desire for a taste of New York in the kitchen with a striking blackand-white marble floor, white quartzite-topped island and sculptural chandelier by the Urban Electric Co. For a family of passionate cooks, the designer selected a powerful, professionalquality BlueStar range.

“As a designer I find

that colors stimulate, motivate and exude happiness,” writes Rideau in her book. She notes that although the colors she discovered in Morocco, Italy, Portugal, and Spain inspire her, it is the palette of Mexico that truly resonates with her. The designer’s judicious use of bold colors is reflected in multiple projects in her portfolio.

Into a kitchen in Santa Monica, Rideau injected a bold green inspired by the color of nopal— prickly pear cactus— balanced by a Calacatta Vagli marble backsplash, reclaimed terra cotta floor tiles from France, and a handcrafted highend La Cornue range.

a desire to use the voice to learn about different musical cultures. Her residency was recently extended to 2025.

She has had shorterterm residencies throughout the U.S., received commissions from orchestras and chamber and choral ensembles, and earned awards and fellowships from entities such as ASCAP and the Kennedy Center.

Her compositional knack for making connections isn’t limited to cultures. “I also have pieces for people who are students and teachers, parents and children, and people who are in very different kinds of socioeconomic groups in the same city,” she says.

The latter includes works written for Street Symphony, the nonprofit ensemble founded by her husband, violinist Vijay Gupta, which brings music

to homeless and incarcerated communities.

“All these different ways of interacting ... can sometimes help bring those people together,” Esmail says. She cites a mother and son who reunited after 20 years by singing a Street Symphony piece together over the phone.

“When we sing together, when we make music together, it can be the catalyst for the more difficult conversations, or for developing the kind of trust where you can start to have those difficult conversations,” she says. “I really think that is what can help us heal some of these divides that can feel very big otherwise.

“I certainly don’t take credit for [reunions]. But it is so amazing to know that something I’ve crafted with the idea that it can connect people really does.”

Performances Magazine unveils a digital program platform for shows and concerts

NO RUSTLING PAGES, no killing trees . . . Of all the innovations to have come out of the pandemic, the new Performances program platform, accessed on any digital device, may be least likely to disappear in the foreseeable future. Not only had its time come—it had been long overdue.

Performances provides the programs for 20 SoCal performingarts organizations, from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Ahmanson to San Diego Opera, where the app made its debut.

The touchless platform provides cast and player bios, donor and season updates and arts-centric features. Audiences receive a link and code word that instantly activate the app; QR codes are posted, too.

Screens go dark when curtains rise and return with the house lights. Updates—repertory changes, understudy substitutions, significant donations—can be made right up to showtime, no inserts necessary.

Other features include video and audio streams, translations and expanded biographies.

For those who consider printed programs keepsakes, a limited number, as well as commemorative issues for special events, continue to be produced. Collectibles!

Meanwhile, there is less deforestation, consumption of petroleum inks and programs headed for landfills. For the ecologically minded, the platform gets a standing ovation.
