WELCOME TO SOAR’S 2019/20 SOCIAL ACCOUNTS Well it has certainly been an interesting year; the question is where to start?

Black Lives Matter: This movement presents us all with a watershed moment. The Board issued a policy statement, we then used workshops at a whole team meeting to discuss 'difficult scenarios'. The learning was that we needed to enable staff to feel more comfortable in dealing with such scenarios.

We developed an Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity programme that will run over six consecutive months from December 2020.

At a Strategic Level: SOAR has reviewed its four strategic objectives. We now have one clear people objective: To improve the health and economic wellbeing of individuals and families in North Sheffield.

We have added a new objective: To use community development approaches to support and expand local community and grass roots organisations.

People: We have recruited 10 new staff and welcomed 4 new Trustees this reporting year. They have all settled in excellently and along with the existing staff and Trustees responded amazingly well to the Covid challenges.

Lockdown: We quickly re-configured our services to focus on Keeping in Touch conversations. All Teams were involved in providing wellbeing checks which enhanced the team spirit. We quickly set up systems to enable effective homeworking. Weekly Covid bulletins were written for staff and the Board.

Loosening Lockdown: We held three whole team meetings that developed our practical approach to Covid secure working practices and buildings.

A good example of co-production in practice.

Tiers and Beyond: We adapted well to lockdown which bodes well for the future, whatever that looks like.

TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND ECONOMIC WELLBEING OF INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN NORTH SHEFFIELD.

SOAR delivers its health services from outreach locations across North Sheffield. We coordinate and integrate delivery to provide services internally, and through community partners delivering the Social Prescribing Service. We continue to see an increase in referrals of clients with complex life issues, which is a challenge to resource. We meet this and other challenges by evolving and finding new ways of working.

We owe our successes to the hard work ethic and adaptability of staff and volunteers.

OUR AMBITIONS We will continue to advocate the development of a joined up Social Prescribing offer across North Sheffield.

We will develop local provision for carers of people living with Dementia, including a new Memory Café in Burngreave.

We need to get a better understanding of local family needs by building links with schools, MAST teams and Family Centres.

“Richard was referred by Page Hall Medical Centre for support with healthy lifestyle/diet and chronic pain management. During home visits we started planning weekly exercises including walking outside to get fresh air. During lockdown I delivered a chronic pain care pack that included a massage ball, epsom salts and a theraband. Richard gets great use from the band and follows exercise videos I’ve sent him. He told me he’s able to do a little longer each time and feels energised for it. We also discussed Richard’s diet and what food swaps could happen right away. He has replaced white bread with brown bread and understands the nutritional value of having 3 regular meals a day. Richard feels more confident in his abilities and is managing his pain much better now.”

SOAR works in partnership with a variety of local community and grassroots organisations to identify and act on what is important to the community. We’ve successfully been awarded a contract to the Mental Health Transformation fund in partnership with Firvale Community Hub.

Healthy Holidays is a citywide project to make sure that children are happy and healthy during the long summer break, with activities to get moving, hampers full of food and recipes for lots of fun!

In North Sheffield: 20 community partners subcontracted 5,787 hampers distributed to families 4,489 unique children supported “We loved being a part of the Healthy Holidays programme; producing creativity packs and delivering workshops in a Covid secure environment. SOAR did an excellent job of making our artists feel safe and secure.

TO DEVELOP, MANAGE AND SUPPORT SOCIAL/COMMUNITY ASSETS AND CENTRES IN NORTH SHEFFIELD.

SOAR is responsible for the maintenance of our centres and the services they deliver. With four buildings to manage, including our main building, SOAR Works, these spaces are home to a wide variety of small and medium-sized enterprises which support local residents. Our priority is to provide a helpful, friendly welcome to our visitors, clients, tenants and colleagues. We pride ourselves on going the extra mile.

OUR AMBITIONS We aim to increase new and repeat sessional lets following the decline during Covid.

Our Centres and Health Teams aim to work closer and become more multifaceted.

We aim to maintain our stable position, with a full Centres Team in place.

We will move our Health Team to the Learning Zone to create a more vibrant community hub in Parson Cross.

CASE STUDY “ArtWorks provides creative opportunities for 70+ adults with learning disabilities across South Yorkshire. We support our service users to develop as artists, learn important life skills and play a meaningful role within their local community.

We’ve been based at SOAR for the past 3 years and have now grown into 3 spaces, supporting 29 artists onsite. Honestly, we couldn’t love SOAR anymore. We feel very lucky to be based here and that we have been able to grow into more spaces. It’s also great that there’s availability to hire meeting rooms which we have used in the past. Everyone who works at SOAR is professional, supportive and very accommodating towards the people we support. Nothing's ever a problem.

COVID-19 RESPONSE

“Despite our building remaining closed throughout the pandemic, we have done our best to keep in touch with our library users online through social media, promoting the e-library, signposting and sharing children’s online activities. We also organised free book distributions locally via the Burngreave Hub and Adventure Playground and our book giveaway event in August in Abbeyfield Park attracted around 70 families.”

Although we closed our buildings during the initial lockdown, we have been able to reopen Bellhouse One Stop Shop, SOAR Works and Longley 4 Greens Community Centre as Covid-secure buildings with measures in place to protect our staff, tenants and visitors.

In response to the lockdown, we joined the Foodbank Network & quickly set up a Foodbank from Longley 4 Greens.

467 food parcels were provided to 1,180 people in North Sheffield from Longley 4 Greens Foodbank. “The SOAR team have been really supportive and kept us up to date with any procedures or instructions we needed to follow due to the restrictions. Emphasis was placed on our wellbeing and when we returned to work we felt safe in the office and communal areas.�

TO BE A HIGHLY REGARDED, SUSTAINABLE, INNOVATIVE ORGANISATION, COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING EMPLOYEES, DEVELOPING CLIENT CENTERED SERVICES, AND ACTING AS AN ADVOCATE FOR NORTH SHEFFIELD.

For any organisation to work well, the right combination of systems, support and agreed ways of working need to be in place: they include internal data systems, staff appraisals, and programmes of training and development. These are the components that keep SOAR working, helping us not only to deliver but to measure, review, reflect and improve. They also show that we care for staff and give them the means to play an invaluable part in achieving SOAR’s mission.

OUR GREAT SUCCESSES We quickly adapted our way of working during lockdown.

We dedicated 3 whole team meetings listening, talking and discussing how we could develop Covid secure return to work practices.

We’ve worked hard at improving our internal communication through regular e-bulletins and use of MS Teams.

We’ve been awarded the Sheffield Volunteer Standard.

LESSONS LEARNT We’ve worked hard at configuring and migrating our new case management database, with thanks to Sheffield Futures and Athena Software.

CASE STUDY “I had only been working for SOAR for 6 months before lockdown started, but I had a good run of the norm before everything changed. Lockdown meant that my role had to adapt, and I’ve taken on more exciting responsibilities.

This has been great for me, as my first job out of university I was looking forward to learning more skills, and I have definitely had this from SOAR! The team are all so friendly and happy to help, and I’m so proud to be a part of the team. Lockdown has shown me how much SOAR do for the community and how all the staff go above and beyond to be there – not only for clients but also for colleagues.”

“When furloughed I started volunteering at the local foodbank which meant I was able to help out and keep active in the community. It was difficult returning to work but learning all the new Covid secure processes and having a conversation with tenants helped me with the transition back into work and a bit of normality.�
