Palm Oil - Numero Uno of Edible Oil

Integrated Crop Health Management (ICHM) in palm oil cultivation refers to a holistic approach that aims to sustainably manage the health of palm oil crops while minimizing the negative impacts on the environment and human health. It involves the integration of various agricultural practices, technologies, and knowledge to optimize crop health and productivity. Integrated Crop Health Management can help improve resilience to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses while improving quality and yield, promoting long-term sustainability and increasingprofitabilityinthepalmoilindustry.

Palmoilisrenownedforitsexceptionalproductivityamongvegetable oilseedcrops,givingimpressiveyieldsofupto20-25metrictonsper hectare. From this, around 4-5 metric tons of Palm Oil and 0.4-0.5 metric tons of Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) can be obtained. It holds a prominent position among the nine major oils traded globally in the edibleoilandfatmarket, servingastheprimarysourceofvegetableoil worldwide.

Palm oil accounts for approximately 80% of total edible oil imports of our country, playing a crucial role in enhancing edible oil production. Palm oil has diverse applications, with roughly 70% utilized in food productssuchaschocolate, icecream, bread, andpotatochips. Additionally, itsindustrialapplications, includingbiofuelandcosmetic production, are steadily expanding and constitute nearly 30% of total consumption. With a lifespan of over 30 years, this perennial crop significantly contributes to the economy, and thus is gaining more importance.

The foregoing pages present a scientific and methodical list of practices and guidelines integrating a wide range of products to be used at different stages of the crop catering to the nutrition - crop protection - disease control needs, thus making integrated oil palm healthmanagementapracticallyviablereality.

Guidelines for Initial Plantation

Select Moist deep, loamy soils, rich in humus with good water permeabilityandSoilpHof4-6range.

StartplantaonfromJunetoDecemberi.e.,duringmonsoon.

If plantaon is done during summer, see that adequate irrigaon, mulching and cover cropping (like sun hemp) in the basin should be provided, whichgivesprotecontoplants.

Choose 12 -14 months old healthy seedlings with 1-1.3m height and 13 funconalleavesforplanng.

While planng, 143 plants per hectare should be maintained with a spacingof9mx9mx9m(triangularplanng).

Planng should be done in pit size of 60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm (length, breadthanddepth).

Fertilizer Requirement of Oil Palm

Oil palm is a gross feeder and demands a balanced and adequate supply ofmacro, secondaryandmicronutrientsforgrowthandyield.

Apply 250g Di Ammonium Phosphate or 400g Single Super Phosphate, 50g Phorate and mix with the soil at the base of the pit. Immediately aerplanng, formbasinandgivecopiousirrigaon.
