a user’s guide to weirdness

Since Aristotle, man has organized his knowledge vertically in seperate and unrelated groups - Science, Religion, Sex, Work, etc. The main emphasis in his language, his system of storing knowledge, has been the identification of objects, rather than relationships between objects. He is now forced to use his tools of reasoning separately and for one situation at a time. Had man been able to see past this hypnotic way of thinking, to distrust it (as Einstein did)and to resystemize his knowledge so that it all would be related horizontally, he would enjoy the perfect sanity and the endless wave that is life. We here at Gnu adopt this philosophy and encourage you to think horizontally, and are very excited to introduce you to our new logo which encompasses all that is horizontal knowledge: TRIANGLE. SQUARE. CIRCLE.

GET HORIZONTAL - GET WEIRD RIDE A GNU 2012 FUTURE BOARD

EXPERIMENT! as you read this other snowboard brands are trying to figure out how to re-market the technological breakthroughs we made by simply being curious. we try new things!

Magne-Traction “Turns ice into powder” Serrated edges give great edge hold all over the mountain especially on hard pack and blue ice!

Every Gnu is handmade by snowboarders with jobs in the USA. Gnus are built with tough and fast UHMW external sidewalls and impact resistant end grain internal sidewalls. Ultra-light weight rugged "polymer bumper" sandwich tip and tails are standard on all Gnus. Steel edges are used for control along the contact area and "tucked in" just past the contacts for minimum spin weight... heavy unnecessary steel edge is eliminated from the tips and tails. Banana Tech, EC2, or C2 BTX camber Banana tech combo and Magne-Traction serrated edges are far from standard but are standard on every Gnu snowboard.

Pickle Tech. Look at your toes. Now... look at your heels... hmm they look different. Weird?! Asymmetric sidecuts and construction to balance the different turning mechanics required for heelside and toe side turns. Your body is asymmetric your snowboard should be asymmetric. Ride better have more fun balanced through asymmetry!

Banana Tech.

All terrain rocker placed specifically between your feet where it belongs. Full tip-to-tail edge contact when you stand on your board for all terrain performance. Banana Tech is easy to ride, rips the hardpack and ice, kills the jibs and floats unbelievably. Bananas! EC2 Banana Tech: The perfect quiver killer. Rides halfway between Banana Tech and C2. Effortlessly floats the pow, kills the jibs and has the pop and tipto-tail stability to stomp whatever you launch. Banana Rocker between your feet, elliptical camber at the tips and tails. Impossible Series. Don’t eat the brown Banana. C2 Power Banana Tech: C2 Floats the pow, kills the jumps and steeps and has the pop and tip to tail stability to stomp whatever you launch. Banana Tech Rocker between your feet, camber at the tips and tails. The perfect solution for aggressive power snowboarding.

In 2009 the world's fastest growing trees in the Gnu Eco Timber farm benefited from a combination of moist evenings, diffused daylight sunshine and being on the north American avian flyway…abundant natural nitrogen from goose and duckdroppings resulted in a exceptional harvest of long fibered lightweight poppy woods that we call "nature's fiberglass". This very exceptional crop has been carefully seasoned and built into cores and is the light poppy center of our 2012 Gnu Snowboards. Columbian Gold: At Gnu we spend a lot of time experimenting in the forest. Our latest favorite arboreal discovery is fast growing renewable Columbian Gold. Incredibly light, strong, poppy wood truly is a weird and wonderful foundation for performance snowboards.

Magnesium is impossibly light, incredibly strong, tastes bitter, is explosively flammable and burns white hot. Experiment and expand your mind with the Magnesium fiber technology we built into every Gnu Impossible Asym. Sym. Sync. Pickle. Warning do not store your Impossible near woodstoves, fireplaces or Pat Bridges.

Liquid crystallinity is achieved through the heating of a polymer past its melting point, during the cooling phase polymers form highly organized linearly aligned selfreinforcing structures resulting in incredible mechanical properties. Strength, chemical and fire resistance. Strength in a fiber allows us to use less material to achieve the desired physical performance translating into a lighter weight composite. LCP also has a very low vibration frequency and with 10 times the strength of titanium LCP was used as the foundation for interplanetary Mars lander tires. Built into a Gnu snowboard these strong light, damp aramid polyester fibers quiet chatter from rough terrain and create an incredibly smooth, poppy, lightweight ride.

Anatomical oddities: Your body is asymmetric heel to toe your board should be too. Balance through Asymmetry: This board is designed to work with your body’s natural asymmetries...balancing your toe and heelside playing iinto the strengths of each sides mechanics to enhance control and performance. Toe side: More finesse through your toes and precise fingertip like edge control. Increased angle of edge attack can be achieved through cumulative articulation of toe, ankle and knee joints. Balance. Heelside: More power through the heels. A lower angle of edge attack and more power can be achieved due to natural joint mechanics. Stomp. Minimal adaptation: The Impossible A.S.S. pickle is ergonomically designed around your natural kinesiology so you don't have to adapt mentally or physically to use it. Intuition and a dream is all you need. Imperceptible Perfection:Initially A.S.S. seems mind alteringly weird‌but what it really means is an easy ride and lots of fun. Ride an A.S.S Pickle and you will feel a difference for the first few turns as your body and mind expect what snowboarding used to feel like and then your body and board will synchronize into perfect harmony and you will achieve a state we call imperceptible design perfection and new levels of joy and performance will be realized.

4 Time Mt Baker Banked Slalom Champion and billy goat freeride line master Temple Cummins is a committed snowboarder. Temple has worked closely with the Gnu design crew since he was 13. These days he is a man who knows what it takes to make a snowboard you can count on when you get yourself in a little deeper than you should have, need to lay down a perfect carved turn against the grain to keep the boarder cross jocks a little lower on the podium or dork around with friends and family. Temple rides his own C2 BTX Freeride power freestyle geometries. The best features of camber and banana technology combined for aggressive all terrain riders... you get the endto-end stability and pop of camber at each end with the proven carving performance and soft snow float of banana tech between your feet. Solid momentum carrying construction, Anvitex Dampener, Farmed eco woods, sintered base. Temple, Forrest Burki and Matt Edgers put it to the test all year long. This board will not let you down.

who's Banana is pretty awesome! He spent years in the pipe refining it to perfection in an environment where carrying a fast line through the flat bottom is the difference between victory and defeat and controlled pop off the lip is the difference between victory and the hospital. The two time Olympic silver medalist and five time US Open champion's mid wide twin C2 BTX with new Liquid Crystal Polymer is a hightech smooth riding banana that will take you where ever you want to go. Camber at each end for pop and stability on landings, banana between your feet for float in powder and incredible edge-hold and carving control onhardpack and ice. I've grown up with Gnu. Well, maybe my age already defined me as a grown up when I started snowboarding, but I don't think I qualified in many other ways. I started riding Lib boards in 1993, and from there began my relationship and “pro career” with Gnu. The details and timelines are a little foggy now, but Mervin definitely shaped my snowboarding and my life from that point on. Gnu introduced me to the future, and what was possible with a good snowboard, good people, and a sense of humor. My first pro-model was released in 95/96 and although Gnu had been designing boards to fit their female riders for years, it was one of the first women's signature models in snowboarding. I am extremely fortunate to have had a sponsor back me throughout my different shred phases, and to have had the opportunity to develop the Gnu girls program from the beginning. Along the way, I've met many girls and women who have inspired me and contributed to snowboarding in their own ways. This line is dedicated to their unique qualities, skills, attitudes, and styles. Gnu girls continues to stand out among other women's brands because we have Mervin technology and quality to lean on, but we also have a solid team of riders and believers, the kind of girls that inspire creativity, fun and all different kinds of magic!

board/blanket package! Limited Edition B-Pro board/blanket package! B-Pro technology and geometries are lent to this limited edition collection. Each package includes a 149 or 152 B-Pro board with a Day of the Dead graphic inspired by Pendleton's Day of the Dead 64"x80" blanket. Cozy and warm, it's napped, felt-bound, 82% pure virgin wool/18%cotton. Both are proudly made in the USA, in the Northwest, near Canada.

149, 152

Designed by Pendleton. The Pendleton collaboration was born from a love of the Northwest. Pendleton and Mervin share a commitment to craftsmanship and making our products in our own factories in the USA. Pendleton's colorful Day of the Dead woven blanket inspired this B-Pro graphic. More than 3,000 years ago indigenous peoples of Mexico celebrated a ritual honoring their dead ancestors. Today, it is celebrated on Nov. 1st, All Saints Day, with festivities honoring the dead. The festive skulls, musicians and marigolds capture the spirit of the celebration. With this board we can take every opportunity to celebrate life and death throughout the winter, and warm up with a cozy blanket at the end of every day!

This is the board that keeps setting the standard for women’s boards. It’s classic C2BTX / Magne-Traction combination is the perfect balance of camber at each end and Banana Tech between your feet. The camber gives the board end to end stability and pop for big landings, critical lines and aggressive riders while the Banana between your feet makes for great carving on hardpack, ice and easy float in powder and broken variable snow conditions. New this year is LCP for a lightweight, strong, and smooth ride. As the longest running women’s pro-model it has picked up more gold than any other women’s board. It continues to win awards and fans while riding onto the podium of every major event in snowboarding. Don’t put this board into a box, it’s good for everything and our team proves it on big mountains, parks, pipes and everywhere else they take it. Name: Maria DeBari Astro sign: Virgo What year did you start riding: 1995 Goofy/Reg?: Regular Stance: 21.5" / 0° Back / 21° Front Tell me a story about a day on your board: Once upon a time when ordinary life seemed a little dull, I embarked on a journey in search of an energy vortex that would rebirth my soul. For the first time in 26,000 years, the sun, moon, and constellation Pleides aligned in a solar eclipse directly over Mt. Shasta. I entrusted my magical B-Pro split board and together we made the pilgrimage up the mighty south face to the summit. At 6:26pm on May 20, the moon slid completely in front of the sun and a portal opened, denoted by a series of eight radiating circular rainbows of which my shadow was the center. If I jumped, I could spend my life living among the Lemurians in the girth of Mt. Shasta. It was a tough decision, but in the end I realized that split boards would have no use inside the mountain, and I still had plans to ride mine. I waved to the Lemurians as the moon slipped by the sun and the portal closed. Then I strapped into my B-Pro split board and the lovers, the pegasus unicorns, and I rode off the summit of Mt. Shasta in perfect corn snow conditions. My soul has been recharged and I have no regrets.

These split boards share the same tech as the B-pro, one of the top selling women's boards of all time. Split boards aren't just for big mountain hippies anymore! The B-pro splits truly open up a world of adventure and magic to riders of all backgrounds and abilities. I finally got to put a Gnu girls team trip together and squeeze all the activities that I love to do into one week in my home area. We did an S4 trip on the Olympic Peninsula, in Mervin's backyard. Snowboarder Mag will do a better job of telling the story but it was one of those weeks that came together even better than I imagined. Powder to ride, B-Pro splits to access the goods, sunshine to light up the mountain, waves to wake up to, and a fun motivated crew to ride, surf, skate and spa with. -Barrett Christy “The B- Pro Split has changed the way I experience the amazing back country terrain where I live. It's faster, lighter weight, and smoother than my old set up. It is quick and easy to change from splitting to snowboarding and accessing the “top of the world” is now so much more fun!” -Maribeth Swetkoff-Kramer “This year was my first time on my majestic split board and it was amazing. It completely opened up a new side of snowboarding for me!” -Kaitlyn Farrington “My experiences with split boarding in the past were less than enjoyable. But then I tried the Gnu womens split board and it was soooooo much easier. It was so fun and addicting, I didnt want to stop.” -Danyale Patterson “I love my B-Pro split board because it is light on the way up and rides like a regular B-Pro snowboard on the way down.” -Maria DeBari

Girls love pow. Girls have been asking for split boards in their sizes for years and Gnu is proud to present the B-Pro splits for 2012/13. You no longer have to hop on your boyfriend's splits, you are now empowered by the B-Pro magic to get to all those runs you've been looking at and dreaming about but just couldn't bring yourself to post-hole there. These are designed to take you where you want to go with ease. It's like instant access to your favorite clubs, with your favorite friends, wearing your favorite shoes, and getting there in your favorite ride. C2BTX, LCP and Magne-Traction keep the split version of the B-Pro riding like the classic model. It doesn't get better than VIP access on the B-Pro splits!

The fresh snow was like a veil over the bulging landscape. Dawn approached as I reached the summit and a whisper of cool wind sent a shiver down my spine. He was late. Perhaps it wasn't the chill in the air that set my skin to ice, but fear in my heart that gave me gooseflesh. The love of a rogue is as wild and defiant as promised, but somehow I knew he'd not abandon me. The clouds were lined with gold when I felt his breath on my neck. The sun was radiating a brightness of light that was matched only by the glow in my soul as strong yet tender hands cupped my cheek.I turned and there he was. My champion. The time that separated us only emboldened my passion. Where once a brush of his hand set my heart ablaze, now the urgent need to have all of him flooded every inch of my body into my very core. "Take me." I whispered. His board was stiff, stiffer than one was accustomed to. My quiver was much more agile, at an easy pace we were matched and out in the open we were as one. The sleek, wet surface of the snow seemed to embrace our presence. The rhythm of our descent was in harmony, at once out of control and perfectly in-sync. Edge to edge, tip to tail, in and out we flew. As we reached our climax, the angle of the slope evened out and the sticky snow began to pull us to a stop. Breathless, we turned back to gaze at our tracks where long, sinewyess-curves marked our journey. We were back inbounds, our torrid emotions waning, but the ache for another ride lingered in our bellies.

The Ladies Choice combines the best of all techs to make a board that's truly ready for anything. With C2Btx, Magne-Traction and Pickle Tech, balance through asymmetry is achievable for the pro in all of us. Tested and proven a winner by Jamie Anderson throughout the 10/11/12 seasons, it will handle the most aggressive park and freeriders while still taking it easy on the rest of us. Fun to ride and ready for anything, it's got the stability to hold you on the biggest park lines or the most technical freeriding, while making pretty turns more effortless than ever.

It was a warm, sunny, spring feeling day in January in Mammoth! They had just finished building the bigger double jump line. I was riding with my husband and a group of guy friends. My board felt amazing under my feet. The C2 Pickle combo on this board made every turn, ollie, and trick feel effortless. The base felt smooth and fast. Even after most of the guys I was riding with said the snow was too slow to continue hitting the double line, my board had no problem holding speed and control in the mushy slush until the very end of the day! I was hitting the big slushy jumps switch and all the guys were shocked that I could still clear the jumps at all. They said it must be the board and I agreed. I think they were all jealous of my Ladies Choice! ;-)

Name: Bryn Valaika Astro sign: Gemini What year did you start riding: Around age 10, so 2001ish i think? Goofy/Reg?: Regular Stance: 20" / -11˚ Back / 18˚ Front Tell me a story about a day on your board: I rode the Pickle as my main snowboard all season, on all terrain, though definitely not a ton of powder since powder was lacking where I was most of the season. I traveled to Japan for the Holy Bowly, an event put on by Krush and Snowboarder Mag, and sponsored by Lib and Gnu. It's a new event, basically a snow equivalent of a skate bowl. The Pickle was ideal in this setting because the Magne-Traction enabled me to carve around and get the pop I needed when I wanted to air out and all. I love my board since it's so responsive to exactly the way I ride! I can only rave about how well it rode in all the different conditions!

The Pickle has been collecting awards this season, and it was by far the most demoed girls board at HCSC in 2011. Banana between your feet for easy riding, catch-free park freestyle performance, and unreal float in the powder. The Pickle is snappy and fun, and it does whatever you ask it to. It’s a park slayer, willing to get dirty on concrete, metal and wood, yet it will still turn gracefully on any frozen surface thanks to the Magne-Traction and asymmetric shape. Your body is asymmetric, it only makes sense that your board is asymmetric too. Gnu Pickles with a deeper heel side sidecut and unique asym core, are designed around progressive riding and modern freestyle duck stances in all terrain. 9 year team rider Bryn Valaika put it to the test all season getting creative on and off the mountain.

Why do I call it the love guru? Maybe it's just because the board is my love, my one and only love at the moment. I've ridden it all season this year, I strap it to my truck (my mini cooper) and ride it in everything... powder, jumps, rails, pipe and I love it, it's a great board! EC2 makes it easy to go from one thing to the next, because I don't really like to switch up my equipment much, I just find something that works and stick with it!

Velvet Guru is the quiver killer. As our first EC2 board in the women's line, it's going to have a killer breakout season. Of course it's smooth and stylish like all things velvet. It makes snowboarding easier and more fun, like all things Mervin. EC2 brings all the tech to the table in a subtle blend that reminds you of your favorite velvety smooth beverage; snappy, poppy, stable, bold, bright, and full of flavor. Don't overlook this board, the E makes it Extra special!

But really, if I had to choose something where there was a normal choice, and a weird choice, I'd probably pick the weird one. Food, socks, art, kites, friends; I'd go for weird and original for sure. I don't get weird with mutual funds and post-apocalyptic survival scenarios and those kinds of things. Do you work in a studio / office / in the park? In my home, I have a room that I call a studio, but it's really a mix between where piles of paper and magazines go to get filed and never do, and a place to make art. Right now the piles of paper are winning. Whats an average day in your life right now? 2AM answering artist bios. Average day though is wake up, get coffee at Equal Exchange, skate at Greenlake with Jesse, try to do a kickflip on cement, and if that doesn't work after 10 or so attempts, try them in the grass where the kids with razor scooters' moms walk the dog. Then it's work time for Think Thank, with freelance sprinkled in and I'm just finishing up school. At night Jesse and I always need to zone out to some bad tv for an hour or so before bed. Mac and Cheese for the brain, nothing too serious. If Jesse's traveling it's all romance novels all the time. The more eyebrow-arching, the better. I wouldn't call it enough to live on by most people's standards, but it makes me happy and I'm pretty low maintenance. Bar tabs are paid for at least and I spend my time and energy doing what I'm passionate about. What does Gnu mean to you? It's a wild cow, it's the first snowboard I ever rode when I was 12 that I rented at the Mt. The B-Street is finally getting the attention it deserves. This board was tested by guys and girls a like for Snowboarder Magazine's 2012 board tests and not only came out on top for the women but placed in the top 3 for the men as well. It's an aggressive BTX board that has the pop and flexibility of a jib board while maintaining a freeride following thanks to the supreme edge-hold of Magne-Traction. This twin board does it all better, from a centered freestyle jib stance. It will change the way you look at the mountain whether you call yourself a beginner or a veteran shred.
