YEAR AFTER YEAR, OLYMPIA’S LEADERS ENTER OUR PROGRAM WITH UNTAPPED LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL AND UNCERTAINTY ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN ACHIEVE IN THEIR LIVES. THREE YEARS LATER, THEY GRADUATE WITH SELF-KNOWLEDGE, CONFIDENCE, AND INSPIRING PLANS FOR THEIR FUTURES. WE ARE IMMENSELY PROUD OF ALL THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED ALREADY AND KNOW THEY WILL BECOME VALUABLE MEMBERS OF ORGANIZATIONS IN MAINE. AND BEYOND AS ADULTS. - THE HONORABLE OLYMPIA J. As I reflect upon all that transpired in 2021, I am filled with pride for how much the Institute accomplished despite continuing challenges from COVID-19. Every part of our network and program family has persisted through another year of the pandemic to achieve success. Our student Olympia’s Leaders (OLs) adapted well even as monthly meeting formats fluctuated with quarantines and school closures. Volunteer Olympia’s Leaders Advisors (OLAs) continued to deliver the program in any and every way possible while increasing their thoughtful support of OLs through extra communications and meetings. School Contacts (SCs) undertook greater workloads due to increased student needs as they transitioned back in and out of in-person classes. Alumni endured remote, hybrid, and distanced college experiences. The Institute kept OLs engaged while completing an online version of its curriculum with a surplus of new content and more diverse resources. And supporters stepped up to ensure the program’s financial stability through another tough year. And though most aspects of the Institute looked different during our sixth year of programming,

we still have much news to share and celebrate with you. Last fall, the Institute welcomed Lincoln Academy as its 37th partner school and first sponsored school, made possible by substantial funding from the Burns Family Foundation — loyal champions since our program launched in 2015. With this addition, the Institute can now serve 218 OLAs and 555 OLs from 37 schools across all 16 Maine counties annually. The Institute team also collaborated with Maine Community College Systems to make the program credit-bearing for participants. The accreditation process included refinements and additions to the curriculum to meet college course standards — as well as significant updates to program materials, so OLs can create a portfolio of their work. Now, OLs who fully participate in the Institute’s three-year curriculum will earn three college credits at no cost to them — valued from $350 to more than $2,500 depending on where they attend school and whether the credits transfer to their college. Credits currently transfer or fulfill an elective at the following institutions in Maine: University of Maine at Orono, University of Southern Maine, Husson University, Thomas College, Eastern

Maine Community College, Central Maine Community College, Kennebec Valley Community College, and Southern Maine Community College. Along with these exciting and progressive changes, the Institute has continued to connect with its extensive network of OLs, OLAs, and supporters through special events and opportunities. In lieu of our typical “Fall Forum” during the 2020-2021 school year, I connected with each class of OLs virtually in three informal “Spring Forums” to share experiences from my life; reaffirm the importance of the three program themes: values, voice, and vision; and offer my support as the girls navigated sustained stress and many new obstacles due to the pandemic. The Institute held its annual “Year End Celebration” online in May, which featured guest speaker Erin French of The Lost Kitchen. Thanks to a thoughtful and generous gift from Unum, seniors received signed copies of Erin’s book “Finding Freedom” — a moving memoir about surviving, discovering her voice, and creating community through food. The event also included reflections from OL representatives in each year of the program, announcements of

scholarships exclusive to OLs, and the graduation of our impressive Class of 2021 participants. For the more than 300 women representing the Institute’s corporate partners and individual donors who participate in our Leaders Network, we offered several professional development opportunities — including: a “Work Better” coffee date and happy hour, at which presenters explained modern worker archetypes and helped participants identify what allows them to be most productive; a “Compassionate Candor” workshop to teach leaders how to give and receive feedback effectively in their workplaces, communities, or homes; and a panel on negotiation in professional settings. At our seventh annual “Leadership Luncheon” in November, we heard

from a panel of women Human Resource leaders about what employers are seeking as they make offers and hire talent in the pandemic landscape. Following their discussion, a panel of three alumni shared the skills they developed through our program, how those skills have served them in college, and how they would market their experience to potential employers when applying for jobs after college. As always, the Institute would not have been able to deliver its programming, events, or opportunities without the passionate engagement of our supporters. You, our extraordinary network, make this program possible and have a hand in changing the lives of 555 young Maine women each year. You have my sincere appreciation for the many ways in

which you contributed to our work in 2021, especially in the face of unprecedented hurdles. During a year where so many had to step back, each of you stepped up for us in truly astonishing ways. Thank you for your steadfast commitment to the Institute and to the hundreds of OLs across the state for whom we are making such a difference. With enduring gratitude,

IT IS MY DREAM AS AN OLYMPIA’S LEADER TO VOLUNTEER AT OR CREATE A POSITIVE OUTREACH PROGRAM FOR YOUNG GIRLS WHO NEED ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORT IN DEVELOPING THEIR OWN GOALS. THIS DESIRE STEMS DIRECTLY FROM MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND APPRECIATION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE MENTORED AND GUIDED ME. — ALAINA SPERREY, OLYMPIA’S LEADER

The mission of the Olympia Snowe Women’s Leadership Institute is to raise the confidence and aspirations of high school girls by helping them develop the skills required to be leaders in their lives, families, careers, and communities. THE ISSUE Studies show that between elementary and high school, girls’ self-esteem drops an average of 3.5 times more than that of boys. This decline in confidence often leads to disbelief in their math or science aptitude, quitting school activities, and avoidance of new experiences or challenges. It has also been reported that, as early as middle school, girls are 25% less likely than boys to say they enjoy taking the lead. This lack of confidence puts young women at a disadvantage, and the issue may continue into adulthood. The young lady who could not raise her hand in class may become a woman who struggles to apply for a job, ask for a promotion, network with new people, communicate effectively with colleagues, lead a team, make decisions, solve problems, innovate in her industry, or even found her own company. THE SOLUTION The National Mentoring Partnership revealed that youth who were at risk of falling off track but had mentors were 130% more likely to assume leadership roles in adulthood.

Each year at the Institute, more than 200 women business and community leaders volunteer as mentors. These OLAs are trained by the Institute, and then devote three years to delivering our unique curriculum to 555 high school students from 37 partner schools spanning all of Maine’s 16 counties.

• Prepared its curriculum to earn digital badges, micro-credentials, and accreditation at Maine colleges and beyond.

Cohorts of five OLs meet monthly with one or two OLAs for experiential activities, thoughtful lessons and debriefs, meaningful conversations, and goal setting. At the start and close of the school year, they also attend regional and statewide events with all participants and many guests from the Institute’s network.

• Devised protocols to select participants who have notable leadership potential but lack the confidence to act on it — and who reflect the range of diverse backgrounds within their schools.

By increasing interactions with successful adults — specifically through mentorship, role modeling, and networking — OLs can observe, emulate, practice, and grow confidence. The curriculum intentionally explores leadership characteristics, skills, and tasks right as they are getting settled in high school. Instead of letting participants fall behind, we help them get a step ahead and stand on their own, knowing they have mentors, peers, and the Institute’s entire network as support. • Focused individual, paired, small group, and statewide activities to achieve seven key leadership outcomes, measured by four surveys throughout the program.

• Planned for structured group agreements so individuals can be themselves, establish authentic relationships, stay safe, be brave, suspend judgment, and communicate and collaborate effectively. • Designed an online platform, as well as both regional and statewide events, to create a network of peer support. • Trained successful women to facilitate three years of monthly meetings focused on personal development — who also role model and mentor along the way. • Welcomed women and men business leaders from across Maine to tell their stories, practice networking with participants, form a community to celebrate accomplishments, and share scholarly and professional opportunities.

The Institute’s program is indispensable because it prepares OLs to persist through crises of confidence, commit to education, and enter the workforce. Girls continue to lose confidence faster than boys as they transition to high school. At the same time, more girls are matriculating to post-secondary education while their male counterparts in Maine are experiencing a slight decline in college-going rates. In the future, companies and organizations will rely on women to drive growth and innovation. It is crucial that women are prepared for leadership roles and have the confidence to use their voices as they assume those responsibilities. The program is designed for OLs to make progress toward seven key outcomes related to leadership, and it is having measurable and significant impact. In addition to personal growth in every category, which is depicted in the accompanying chart, compelling indications of the program’s success are the following statistics from the Class of 2021 OLs: 5% were named VALEDICTORIAN or SALUTATORIAN. 33% ranked in the top 10% of their class academically or earned HONORS. 98% GRADUATED on time or early. 100% began higher or specialized education, military service, or entered the WORKFORCE by 2022. 76% stayed in Maine. 59% are studying a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field — indicating that those participants interested in STEM now have the CONFIDENCE to pursue it.

THE NEW BENEFIT: ACCREDITATION The Institute’s program is designed to help OLs acquire and hone the skills needed to be leaders in all aspects of their lives — particularly as they transition into postsecondary education and the workforce. Skills such as self-knowledge, effective listening, communication, taking personal responsibility, collaborating with and appreciating people with different backgrounds and perspectives, tackling challenges, and building and stewarding a network of support are woven throughout the three-year curriculum. These skills also improve high school graduation and college enrollment rates, and the positive effects continue for at least four years.* To provide tangible evidence of skill acquisition, the Institute sought accreditation of the program in 2021. As the school of record, Eastern Maine Community College will award digital badges to OLs who fully participate in each program year’s in-person meetings and independent work. Digital badges are a visual representation of learning that detail acquired skills and can be featured on résumés, LinkedIn, email signatures, or social media profiles. They are easily verified and attractive to employers seeking candidates with specific skills. When combined, the three badges translate into the “Olympia’s Leader Alumna” milestone badge, which is a micro-credential worth three college credits. A micro-credential is a certification that confirms proficiency in a particular skill or group of skills. They are increasingly important to maintain pace with digital innovations, and they allow learners to create a portfolio of measurable skills. OLs will be given transcripts to facilitate transfer of the credits to other Maine-based institutions and out-of-state schools. The Institute takes great pride in the fact that Olympia’s Leaders outpace the state of Maine in many measures of DIVERSITY — including RACIAL IDENTITY and SEXUAL ORIENTATION — and remains committed to creating additional structures to ensure that future participants represent different abilities, experiences, backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.

DIVERSITY

In today’s world and always, it is critical that programs are inclusive of the most diverse group of qualified participants possible. The Institute is dedicated to assembling student cohorts in a way that represents the diversity of their community and includes a range of backgrounds, so that broad perspectives and experiences can benefit cohort discussions. This diversity results in rich conversations at events, during monthly meetings with advisors, and in guided online forums. All OLs are taught to explore and learn to appreciate difference throughout their time in the program.

SUPPORT OF OUR DONORS PROVIDES STABILITY IN A CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENT Like so many other nonprofits, the Institute was forced to adapt when faced with the onset of a global pandemic in 2020. Heavily invested in the impact of personal connection and mentorship, limited in-person interaction threatened to disrupt not only the Institute’s program elements, but its development efforts and administrative functions as well. While the effects of the pandemic persisted into 2021, the Institute has been fortunate to rely on the guidance of its Board, dedication of its volunteers, and the support of its donors. Even in the most challenging of environments, the commitment of these groups has allowed the Institute to continue acting on its mission to raise the confidence, increase the aspirations, and encourage the leadership of Maine’s young women.

Despite experiencing several atypical years, the financial position of the Institute remains strong. Due to the transition from in-person to virtual programming, the Institute continued to experience a significant drop in expenses in 2021 compared to pre-pandemic years. Meanwhile, contributions remained strong, allowing the Institute to exceed its operational fundraising goals. The result was a positive net income that will ensure that the Institute can keep its promise to the 185 Olympia’s Leaders it welcomes each year to see them through the three-year program. Though recent world events have introduced an increased level of uncertainty into nearly every aspect of life, there is one thing for which we at the Institute have become certain: the unwavering commitment and generosity of our growing community of donors is extraordinary. We remain deeply grateful for their support.
