une is Men’s Health Month, where we focus on awareness, prevention and education for all of the important men (and boys) in our lives. According to menshealthmonth.org: • Women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual exams and preventative services than men. • Men are nearly twice as likely to die of Heart Disease than women. • Men suffer hearing loss at 2x the rate of women.

MEN

in your life!

• Men are 4x as likely to commit suicide than women (and among 20- to 24-yearolds, that statistic jumps to 6x) • Men have fewer infection-fighting T-cells and are thought to have weaker immune systems than women. • 1 in 2 men are diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, compared to 1 in 3 women. The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of diseases

FOR MEN, STARTING TO TAKE CONTROL OF THEIR HEALTH IS EASY AS 1-2-3! 1. EAT HEALTHY Start by taking small steps, like saying “no” to super-sizing and “yes” to a healthy breakfast. Add at least one fruit and vegetable to every meal.

among men and boys. Please share this information with your family and friends, and support the men and boys in your world, in their endeavors to lead a long and happy, healthy life.

2. GET MOVING Play with your kids or grandkids. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Do yard work. Play a sport. Choose activities that you enjoy, to help keep you motivated.

3. MAKE PREVENTION A PRIORITY Many health conditions can be prevented or detected early, with regular checkups from your healthcare provider. Regular screenings may include blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, prostate health and more.

In a recent study conducted by WalletHub, Reno, Nevada was ranked the “second most fit city out of 100 major metro areas.” The study took into account fat prevalence, weight-related health problems, and how healthy an area’s environment is. Credited for the high rating are the area’s bike lanes, ample sidewalks for walk-ability, hiking and biking trails around northern Nevada, local parks, various recreation areas around Lake Tahoe and low-cost (if not free) health/wellness programs at city centers. Way to go, Reno! 1. https://wallethub.com/edu/fattestcities-in-america/10532/ 2. http://mynews4.com/news/health/renonamed-2nd-fittest-city-in-us

I

n honor of Father’s day, let your father know how much he means to you! We get such strength and direction from our father’s love. I was fortunate to have a wonderful father. He taught me so much about responsibility, fairness and integrity. He was a deeply good person and lived the qualities of fairness and integrity in everything that he did. I depended on him for guidance and strength well into my later years. Unfortunately, he passed in 2009, and not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. His memory, his love and his teachings stay with me. Years ago my father sent me a beautiful email called “God’s Pharmacy.” I cherish the email and revisit it often. God left us many clues as to what foods help what part of the body. For example; a sliced carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye, and yes, science shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and the function of the eyes. A tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red.

Tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed heart and blood foods. A walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere , upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums even the wrinkles of folds on the nut are just like the neo -cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three dozen neurotransmitters for brain function. Nature provides us with what we need to be healthy and vibrant. Sadly, over the years the food industry has changed and modified our food supply to aid the emphasis on producing mass quantity rather than quality. These modifications have changed the food’s original make up as well as added unhealthy chemicals and toxins. It’s not a surprise that diabetes, gluten intolerance, and cancer are on the rise. Your best approach to healing is to learn about the root cause of the ailment. If you have been diagnosed with an illness, take the time to research the diagnosis, get a second and even third opinion. We are very lucky to live in the age of “Google” where the greatest library in the world is right at our fingertips. Along with your research, amazing healers are available to work directly with the body’s natural ability to heal it through many means. Proper nutrition,

elimination of toxins, body work, exercise, supplements and essential oils are but a few. Emphasize the fortification of your body to heal rather than filling it with toxins from drugs, suffering side effects and not really knowing how those drugs will affect your body over the long term. This month’s issue Is celebrating men’s health, along with exciting news about the progress in blood tests that can be used to detect cancer, the final entry of the very valuable thyroid series, hypnosis for habits, the power of intravenous vitamin C, the upcoming Rankema Summit and lots of other useful information from our health experts. MEDICAL MARIJUANA 101

YOUR DISPENSARY SHOPPING GUIDE, PART 2 Written by Michelle Autry

L

ast month we touched on the major genetic classifications or strain types of Medical Marijuana: sativas, indicas and hybrids, and their anticipated effects. We also explained the importance of understanding the potency and ratio of THC & CBD in the cannabinoid you choose to use. This month we continue our general guidelines by explaining different administration methods and types of products that are available to you at any Nevada licensed Dispensary.

Methods of Administration or Product Types Inhalation: Smoking & Vaporizing • This includes the age-old familiar product, the flowers or buds, as well as concentrated products made from the plant resin, like kief, wax, shatter, budder and oil. • Onset & Duration - Effects are usually felt within 1-3 minutes, develop fully within 15 minutes, and last 1-3 hours. • Active ingredients are absorbed through the mucus membrane of the lung and deposited directly into the bloodstream. • Flowers can be smoked in joints, glass and water pipes or vaporized in handheld or desktop vaporizers.

SMOKING VS. VAPING Although a 2006 study found absolutely no link between smoking cannabis and cancer – even in heavy, long-term cannabis users – vaporization is a preferred method for many. Convection heats cannabis just below the point of combustion, high enough to extract cannabinoids, but too low for the potentially harmful toxins that are released during combustion. Thus, vaping potentially eliminates the health risks associated with

smoking, and markedly reduces the amount of irritating particulate materials that get inhaled, resulting in much less inflammation and damage to the lining of the lungs. There is also significant reduction in odor and secondhand smoke, making it a good choice for households with children or pets.

RECOMMENDATIONS WHEN USING EDIBLES

Oral: Edibles

• Everyone’s metabolism is different and therefore may react differently. It is very important to “Start Low & Go Slow” to have a safe and enjoyable experience!

• Onset & Duration - Effects are usually felt within 1-2 hours, however may require longer to reach their desired effect, and may last 6-10 hours depending on a variety of factors, including weight and metabolic rate. Dosage amounts may vary by brand. Read instructions carefully and follow as directed. • Although only 10-20% of the cannabinoids reach the blood plasma after being processed through the digestive system, a potent THC metabolite (11-hydroxy THC) forms in the liver during the process that has a higher affinity to bind to cannabinoid receptors and is thought to be 5-10 times stronger or more potent than inhaled THC. • This includes many options from sweet to savory food products, butter and oil for cooking, to candies, chocolates, capsules, beverages like coffee, tea, soda, or any product that is swallowed and digested as a mechanism of action.

• Don’t mix edibles with alcohol or other controlled substances. • Read the instructions for dosage and recommended serving size on the packaging.

Sublingual or Buccal • Onset & Duration - Effects are usually felt within 5 minutes, full effects within an hour. The effects generally last about 3-4 hours. Dosage amounts may vary by brand. Read instructions carefully and follow as directed. • Most often alcohol, vinegar, or glycerol is used as a solvent and carrier of the medicine, which is absorbed under the tongue (sublingual) or inside the cheeks (buccal) - and unless swallowed, tinctures are not absorbed by the liver, but directly absorbed into the bloodstream. • Tinctures are sold on their own, as drops to dissolve under the tongue, or are used in making lozenges and other fast-acting products. • Alcohol-based tinctures may also be dropped into hot water in order to let the alcohol evaporate and then ingested. However, the onset, duration and effects will be the same as an edible or beverage.

Topical, or Percutaneous • Onset & Duration - Effects are usually felt within 1-5 minutes, full effects within 20 minutes. The effects generally last about 1-3 hours. Read instructions carefully, ask questions if you are unsure and follow as directed. • Medicinal Marijuana Creams are made from oil that has usually been decarboxylated, to activate cannabinoids so they can be absorbed through your skin. These products are applied topically to the skin. THC is generally not absorbed through the blood brain barrier via topical products, meaning they are not psychoactive. Ask your Dispensary Product Specialist to be sure, or call the manufacturer. • This includes creams applied directly to the area in pain or muscle spasm, skin creams for conditions like psoriasis and sun damage, massage and bath oils, infused Epsom salts and bath bombs, lotions and chap sticks.

test for cancer Written by Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

The Cancer Profile is a relatively new blood test that can detect cancer up to 10-12 years prior to tumor diagnosis. It is based on the premise that detectable biochemical changes occur in the human body during its transformation into a cancerous state. The profile is performed by American Metabolic Laboratories, overseen by Emil Schandl, M.S., PhD, M.D. He is a specialist in Clinical Chemistry as well as a Licensed Nutritional Consultant.

cancers of other organs. However, when CEA and PHI were combined, overall sensitivity was increased considerably.

Dr. Schandl developed his battery of tests after a great deal of reading, testing and experimentation at the Howard Hughes Research Institute in Miami, Fla.

By combining all these tests, the results provide an impressive level of accuracy and precision. It has been determined to have an overall accuracy of 87-97%!

The profile consists of 7 different tests.

1&2

HCG

4

(human chorionic gonadotropin)

both serum and urine 3

PHI

CEA

6

(carcinoembryonic antigen)

5

(phosphohexose isomerase enzyme)

GGTP

(a liver test)

The other thing that is remarkable about this battery of tests is that it is excellent not only for early detection, but also for laboratory follow-up and monitoring disease reduction or progression during treatment.

While numerous studies have confirmed that HCG levels are elevated if there are cancer cells in the body, it may be present in super-low quantities that cannot be detected. Therefore, the Cancer Profile includes other tumor markers as well. In other words, what one test may miss, the others will usually detect.

All this is done without the use of radiation so monitoring of progress can safely be done far more frequently than during conventional treatment.

8

TSH

(a thyroid test)

7

The uniqueness of the Cancer Profile is that it combines a number of tests which, by themselves, might not be indicative enough, but together provide and impressive level of accuracy and precision.

In one study during its development, the tumor marker CEA proved to be sensitive in cases of metastasized bone cancer, while PHI was elevated in

distinctly lower levels of both PSA and HCG, compared to those patients with tumors remaining. Clearly, lower levels of these markers indicate a procedure’s effectiveness.

The tests can also be important to establish a benchmark prior to surgery. With a retest later, one can determine if the surgery has removed the whole tumor. For example, a study in the Journal of Tumor Marker Oncology in 1992 reported that men who had had their diseased prostates removed had

DHEA-S

(an adrenal hormone)

The markers may also serve as a warning signal of the prospect for renewed problems. The Cancer Profile has proven itself useful in helping to move past the era of toxic cancer screening and treatment. Your Thyroid and You:

The Finale “The sky’s the limit!”

T

he final words spoken by Jean-Luc Picard, Captain, U.S.S. Star Ship Enterprise in the series finale of Star Trek; The Next Generation. Like its namesake episode, “All Good Things,” our Patient Mysteries. The Thyroid series, with this two-part summary, comes to a close.

Written by Dr. William N. Clearfield, D.O.

The thyroid, as our faithful readers now know, is a butterflyshaped organ located in the Adam’s apple. It is our “gas pedal,” producing messengers (hormones), responsible for the smooth functioning of the organs we do not voluntarily control. With too much thyroid hormone on board, our system races out of control. With too little, which in our experience is 95% of the time, we experience cold intolerance even in summer, unexplained weight gain impossible to lose, all day fatigue, thin hair and thinning of the outer third of the eyebrow, dry skin, cracked, ridged fingernails, poor memory, moodiness, low body temperature (never greater than 97.6 F.), and a poor sense of wellbeing. Twelve percent of the U.S. population will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime. Sixty percent of those patients are symptomatic but unaware of their condition.1 Prior to 1975, genetic influences were the main cause of thyroid disease. With the advent of modern agricultural techniques, air, water and chemical pollution and inflammatory foods, the major root causes of thyroid disease shifted to 1) “Leaky Gut” Syndrome, 2) exposure to heavy metals and toxins, 3) latent infectious diseases, 4) adrenal insufficiency, 5) iodine deficiency and 6) nutrient deficiencies. Selfinduced “autoimmune” disease constitutes up to 90% of new thyroid disorders. While each root cause is a seemingly disparate entity, the mechanism of action in every instance, be it a GI, toxic metal, infection, adrenal, iodine or other nutrient issue, is essentially the same. Molecular mimicry is the term used when one set of tissues closely resembles another totally different set of tissues. Thyroid molecules, unfortunately, closely resemble, in one form or another, all of the above “disease” entities. When the brain detects that circulating thyroid is low, the pituitary gland, via Thyroid Stimulating Hormone, instructs the thyroid to produce more storage (T4) hormone and usable (T3) hormone. If a chemically similar, but in reality foreign, substance is present, the thyroid utilizes it, thinking it is producing thyroid hormone. The body eventually realizes it does not have the proper amount of thyroid hormone on board to function properly and signals the brain to produce more (false) hormone. Eventually the immune system is alerted and produces antibodies to protect itself from these “invading” entities, resulting in inflammation and organ damage.

June 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Diagnosing and treating thyroid deficiency is a hot topic. The American Society of Clinical Endocrinologists’ official position declares “Serum thyrotropin (TSH) is the single best screening test for primary thyroid dysfunction”2 leaving millions of clinically hypothyroid patients in limbo as their test is between 0.45 mlU/L and 4.5 mlU/L, the “normal” 2 standard deviations or 95% of a cross section of healthy adults’ range. Left alone, hypothyroidism will progress to brain fog, infertility, miscarriage and heart failure. Within the confines of “normal” thyroid function, high blood pressure, depression, cardiovascular abnormalities, weight gain and glucose abnormalities are common. Free T3 is the functioning form of the thyroid molecule. Knowing the amount of circulating thyroid hormone available and supporting it to an optimal state, 3.84.2 pg/ml, enables us to refine our patients’ health. Reverse T3 (rT3) is a non-functioning, inert T3 molecule. Reverse T3 is formed from T4 conversion when the body is deficient in selenium and iodine. A free T3/rT3 (goal < 20) ratio is the most useful marker for tissue hypothyroidism and as a marker of diminished cellular functioning. Reverse T3 results from chronic illnesses, yo-yo dieting, heavy metal exposure, infections and physical and mental stress. Symptoms of elevated reverse T3 include fatigue, difficulty losing fat, brain fog and muscle aches. Remedies for thyroid disease are as controversial as the diagnosis. The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American Thyroid Association emphatically declared in 2012, “the standard treatment is replacement with Synthroid or its generic equivalent levoxyl.” 3 On the surface this seems to make sense. Nearly 80% of circulating thyroid is T4. T4 naturally converts to T3 so why bother with a more complicated compound? The problem is that T4-only products, Lthyroxine, synthroid, levothyroxine and levoxyl to name a few, in many cases fail to convert their substrate to T3. Join us next month as we continue our wrap-up of Your Thyroid and You, by further discussing the results of failing to adequately convert T4 to T3, and covering dietary recommendations for those with thyroid disease. Call us at 775-359-1222 to get started on the road to thyroid health. See ad on this page.

LY M E – I T ’ S T I M E F O R A

PART 2 OF 3

NEW APPROACH

Written by Martin Rutherford, D.C., C.C.S.T., C.F.M.P. and Randall Gates, D.C., D.A.C.N.B. So here’s problem #1 for the Lyme patient who does not get to their initial doctor appointment in the first 30-90 days post infection - The CDC guidelines are for acute infection. The bestcase-scenario would be that a person sees the doctor in the first 30-90 days with an acute infection, tests positive for the bacteria, takes the antibiotics, and – for most people – gets better. Problem #2 – most people don’t know when, or “if” for that matter, they’ve been infected, don’t remember a rash and get to their GP months or years later. They are no longer acute, they are chronic. Problem #3 – You show up at the “Lyme doctor’s” office. You are going to get Lyme testing of all sorts that even the Lyme community doctors concede are at the least, inconsistent and at worst, unreliable. Problem #4 – Because there really is no definitive testing for Lyme in the chronic phase and knowing that their patients are genuinely ill – there is an agreement among Lyme-literate doctors that all chronic problems are Lyme related. This disconnect is a major problem for the Lyme patient.

bamboozled by these Lyme doctors. Lyme doctors say, “Well you know what, I’ve got patients who are chronically ill, they have symptoms of Lyme according to my testing and it makes sense in my paradigm. So I treat them and I’m seeing good results in a percentage of these patients.” IS IT REAL? For the record, we practice functional medicine and functional neurology and we treat chronic Lyme disease. With all deference to the infectious disease researchers – Lyme exists. It may be over-diagnosed, misdiagnosed, or not diagnosed – but for sure it exists. And, interestingly, if anyone in the medical profession promotes that it exists, it’s the GP. To further the confusion of who believes and who doesn’t, GPs are now saying chronic Lyme is real1. “We see you patients coming in with a variety of symptoms and know that maybe you have Lyme disease. You take the antibiotics. You’re never fully recovered, but we know that it’s real. But we are GPs. We are not infectious disease doctors (who don’t think it’s real). And we don’t really have the data to figure it out. What’s real, what’s not, what’s truth, what’s fiction?” This is what most patients have been through this utter confusion and frustration. It’s got to stop. And it will.

“So you can see the rift that we have going on in the Lyme disease world. And it gets worse.”

So you can see the rift that we have going on in the Lyme disease world. And it gets worse. In the general Lyme scientific literature there is a war going on between infectious disease research doctors, who are highly academic people that like everything in their world to be neat and precise, and the Lymeliterate doctors who are clinicians and just want to get their patients better. The war is that the infectious disease researchers are saying that the Lyme-literate doctors’ patients don’t really have Lyme based on the research criteria for Lyme and in fact the Lyme disease probably doesn’t exist, and you’re being

THE TREATMENT CONUNDRUM: Within the Lyme world there are controversial arguments in favor of long-term antibiotic use (2 – 6 years). This is because in the body Lyme bacteria keep rearing their ugly heads. They continued on page 14

appear and disappear – this is not a theory. This phenomenon has long been validated. These bacteria are called “persistors.” It’s not that these bacteria have become antibioticresistant, but in order to evade the immune system they go in and out of tissues or turn into little balls (cysts), becoming hard for the immune system to recognize and kill. This phenomenon is the crux of the argument for “pulsing” different types of antibiotics. So you take an antibiotic, then you don’t take it, you take it again, and this treatment has definitely been shown to reduce the bacteria load. There are additional treatments for a laundry list of other issues – coinfections, parasites, heavy metals, cortisol levels, and more. One of the problems with these approaches is that a lot of them, especially the antibiotic therapies, are for acute aspects of the conditions. If you’ve had the condition for 3 months or even years, your body’s in a state of chronicity – which involves different systems and mechanisms. So for years we have seen a lot of patients diagnosed with Lyme disease (and many who have been misdiagnosed with Lyme disease) come to our offices who have been on chronic antibiotic administration as well as numerous novel treatments for coinfections and a variety of other complicating factors, and they still have many of the symptoms they started out with. These patients don’t come to our office

for Lyme treatment. Instead they are here for treatment of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, peripheral neuropathy, dizziness, vertigo, balance conditions, etc., all having been diagnosed with Lyme disease. And they are surprised that they do well in our paradigm. We surmised why that might be, as technically we’re not treating them for Lyme. We were treating them for chronic pain and chronic diseases … chronic conditions. On February 24, 2016 in the Journal of Autoimmunity, there was a new research article on Lyme disease. For the Lyme patient and practitioner it should be a game-changer. It’s the reason we’re writing this article. This article gives data that all chronic Lyme patients need to know and understand. We will be going into this article in greater detail in part III, but the study definitely proves that after 30 to 60 days, the Lyme disease does not respond to the above mentioned acute care protocols because it, not unlike rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s, Sjogrens, or Lupus, has become a chronic autoimmune based condition. And there is a way to calm it down and get it under control. Living your Life in the Present Moment Written by Ruth Gentry, Ph.D.

How many times have you driven to work on autopilot or walked into a room to only forget why you went there in the first place? This is mindlessness or not being present with your experience in the moment. We live in a busy world, often multitasking to accomplish necessary tasks, and can find ourselves losing connection

with our present experience. Mindfulness is the contrast of this experience - it is the awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the presentmoment, which also means (at least temporarily) letting go of anxiety about the past or worries about the future. Not that there is anything wrong with thinking of past or future, but if we are constantly going over them, we are missing this moment

of our lives, which is the only moment we ever really have. The benefits of mindfulness have been well-proven with research showing it improves physical and psychological wellbeing. If we are able to focus more on the moment, we are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or any regrets about the past. As a result, this can reduce anxiety, stress, depression and irritability as well as improve

Endeavor not to latch onto a particular sensation or get caught up in your thinking 3 about past or present. Observe what comes and goes in your mind. We have to go with the flow of our thoughts and emotions, which can be uncomfortable for people first starting this practice, but mindfulness involves accepting whatever experience may arise in the present moment.

relationships. Research shows that mindfulness is not only linked with improved stress management, but also associated with decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol 1. It has also been shown to be effective in reducing the impact of chronic pain, lowering blood pressure, improving gastrointestinal distress, bolstering the immune system, and improving sleep 2, 3.

What does it mean to live in the present? Although it may vary from person to person, learning to be fully present is a skill, and like any skill it will take practice. Here are some suggestions to get started with mindfulness practice.

CAN’T

SLEEP?

If your mind wanders just notice where it has gone and 6 redirect it to your breath or to the activity you’re doing in the present moment. Mindfulness allows us to come to terms with things as they are, even if our sensations or thoughts are painful. It also allows us a different way to cope with the challenges life may bring. If you can start to experience life more in the present moment you will eventually train your brain to experience more gratitude naturally. As a result, you will likely be calmer, healthier and a happier person. For more information, contact our office at 775-826-6218.

When you consciously want to make changes and you find that old habits are getting in your way, you may not realize that those old habits are held in place by your subconscious mind, and when the conscious and subconscious are in conflict, the subconscious almost always wins.

Habits are neutral. They’re not for us or against us. If we learned poor eating habits as a child, then it’s likely we’ll continue with those habits. If we learned to eat healthy, then we’ll probably continue to eat healthy. If you’ve tried to change any habit through will power

The Healing Power of

INTRAVENOUS NUTRIENTS When Antibiotics Aren’t Enough, IV Vitamin C to the Rescue Severe Pneumonia, Bronchitis and Sepsis Written by Michael Gerber, MD, HMD

T

his year there have been many occurrences of difficult and persistent coughs, flus, bronchitis and pneumonias lasting three to six weeks or more with severe debility. Patients have required stronger antibiotics than usual and even with taking oral vitamin C, herbal and nutrient immune support they needed more power to overcome their illnesses. We have been administering IV vitamin C for over 40 years and this year it has been very important for these difficult bacterial, viral bronchitis and pneumonia cases. Oral vitamin C has the limitation of diarrhea at high doses but intravenously very large doses can be given without bowel stimulation. We usually start with 5,000 mg to 25,000 mg (25 grams) and increase to 37.5 grams or 75 grams if necessary. Infections and any toxic influence on the body cause oxidation and free radical damage (removing electrons from cell membranes) and vitamin C is the universal anti-oxidant (electron donor) to repair the damage. Typically one or two of these vitamin C IV treatments will turn the tide for the patient. In the IV we also include calcium, magnesium, potassium, B6, B5, B complex, B12, trace elements, procaine, bicarbonate and a small amount of cortisol. This has been a powerful formula for us since we started using it in 1975. Vitamin C was used IV by Dr. Fredrick Klenner, MD from North Carolina in the 1950s to cure 60 cases of polio in a row1. IV C at 100 grams per day also saved the life of a terminal Swine Flu patient in 20102 in New Zealand. Look up the You Tube coverage of this. It is a great story. They told his children to pull the plug on his ventilator until Dr. Levy suggested 100 grams of IV vitamin C per day and he returned to work completely cured in 6 weeks. Sepsis, the overwhelming blood bacterial infection, has been proven to respond to IV

18

vitamin C therapy. It is frequently fatal and causes kidney and liver failure. Dr. Alpha Fowler, MD professor of medicine, head of pulmonary medicine and critical care at the Commonwealth of Virginia School of Medicine spent six years researching vitamin C and sepsis starting with rat models and moving carefully into human research. IV vitamin C reduced sepsis mortality from 62% to 38% in humans with only 14 grams of IV vitamin C administered around the clock for four days with no adverse effects3. Unfortunately, getting vitamin C in the ICU is impossible with the current drug-only paradigm and only happened in the New Zealand case after threats of law suits. Hopefully allopathic medicine will open up to non-toxic, inexpensive solutions for this common health care tragedy. INTRAVENOUS OZONE FOR INFECTIONS A one-two punch of IV Ozone (O3) or peroxide with IV vitamin C and nutrients is frequently used for chronic infections as well as pneumonia and bronchitis. Ozone is made from oxygen and enhances immunity by regulating cytokines and lymphokines. There is a mountain of evidence supporting the use of ozone and it has been used in Germany for over one hundred years4. It can be administered in ears, rectally and intravenously. We usually use ozone bubbled in saline and then give intravenously. It wakes up metabolism and immune power and then we frequently follow with the IV C combo as noted above with great results for acute infections. It is also effective treating Ebola, probably Zika, Epstein-Barr and other viruses associated with chronic fatigue. MANY OTHER POWERFUL INTRAVENOUS THERAPIES IV EDTA is a well-documented therapy to remove calcium from arteries and heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and arsenic

from the body5-6. Hello Flint, Michigan!! Is anybody talking about removal of lead from those poor people? IV amino acids are also used for treatment of acute psychiatric disorders such as bipolar illness, depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Plaquex, intravenous phosphotidylcholine (IV lecithin) is great to rinse out arterial plaque accumulation to treat heart disease, cognitive decline and peripheral artery disease. Vitamin C is very protective against radiation damage such as from one’s cell phone and Fukushima1. It is also important to prevent and treat cancer7. IV nutrient therapies are powerful and available at the Gerber Medical Clinic. Contact us at 775-826-1900 or visit us online at www.gerbermedical.com

DO YOU HAVE A

Written by Dr. Tony Jensen

THERE ARE

There are several reasons why you may have developed this condition while you were a child or as an adult. Some common causes are:

TWO REASONS THAT PEOPLE HAVE A SHORT LEG:

• Congenital defects during fetal development, including position of the fetus

1.

• Hip or knee surgery that has caused the affected leg to shrink

There is an anatomical or structural reason. This condition of a short leg is due to the difference in length found in the leg bones, i.e. tibia, femur or both.

2.

There is a functional or postural cause. In this condition the person’s legs are actually the same but due to the postural changes in the pelvis and lower legs and with the associated muscles, it gives the appearance that you have a short leg.

20

• Injuries sustained during delivery, including a dislocated hip • Childhood injuries or infections to growth plates • Poor posture by unevenly tilting the pelvis, causing it to treat one leg as shorter than the other

• Dislocations or fractures of the lower limb as an adult In my experience, the vast majority of what is diagnosed overall as short leg syndrome is the Postural or Functional type. The bone length is actually normal, however the joint position and muscle balance in the limbs is completely out of whack. The body has no choice but to compensate for the discrepancy between the halves of the body in order to accomplish life tasks.”

If the compensation for the discrepancies are not straightened out then in time you will develop symptoms. “Symptoms may affect our entire body; from our feet to the way our teeth come together when we chew. People with a short leg usually compensate for this problem, and thus may cause other problems to occur. An example would be leaning towards the side with the short leg, trying to make its foot touch the ground while standing still. This puts pressure on the back and the pelvis, causing lower back and hip pain.

OTHER SYMPTOMS MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: 1. Knee pain in both the short and long legs 2. Sciatica, or inflammation of the nerves in the leg and lower back 3. Poor balance when walking and running 4. Foot and ankle wpain 5. Fatigue

June 2016 • Healthy Beginnings

Don’t suffer through another day with untreated pain!

HAVE YOU NOTICED that one of your legs seems to be shorter or longer than the other, that you wear out one side of your pant leg more than the other?

No twisting and popping using the Pulstar Adjuster, muscle testing with Applied Kinesiology. We also perform manual manipulation.

Compensation: Our bodies are wonderful! When we have a problem the body tries to fix it; and, if it can’t, it tries to get around the problem by compensating for it. There are two common methods that our bodies use to equalize the length of our legs: 1. Leaning towards the short leg, thereby trying to extend it and make the leg longer. 2. Bending the short leg’s foot down and out, trying to make it longer. This is called pronation. 3. These methods of compensation may help our gait, or the way we walk, but they produce abnormal stress in lower back, hips, knees, ankles, and feet. This causes pain in these structures, especially when we are on our feet.” The best thing to do is relieve the pain of a short leg by making both legs equal in length when walking and standing. This can be done by ruling out if the short leg is coming from an anatomical or a functional problem, after ruling out anatomical problems which require lifts or possible surgery. Then a chiropractor will need to assess, adjust and release the muscle imbalances in the pelvis, knees, ankles, feet, or spine area that is effecting the short leg symptom. Not all chiropractors now how to do this. If this problem has been building for a long time, then it can take some time to unwind or balance out the leg. It’s always best to fix things before they become a problem. As the old adage goes “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” For more info, contact Dr. Tony Jensen at 775-323-1222. Stepping Out of

MAN BOX Of

“Girls can wear jeans and cut their hair short, wear shirts and boots, ‘cause it’s OK to be a boy, but for a boy to look like a girl is degrading, ‘cause you think that being a girl is degrading.”

–The Cement Garden

Written by Dr. Tory Clark Within the United States, the social expectations of what it means to “be a woman” or to “be a man” reside in two very distinct black and white boxes. Each box holds certain behaviors, which are socially appropriate for men and women to adhere by. Obviously, these expectations have a profound influence on our sexuality and generate certain behaviors. Through stereotypical gender roles, we are socialized to glorify masculinity and degrade femininity within our society. What happens when these roles are embraced? Tony Porter once gave a speech on Ted. com tilted “A Call to Men,” where he stated, “See collectively, we as men are taught to have less value in women, to view them as property and the objects of men. We see that as an equation that equals violence against women.” The United States has the highest incidence of rape of all Western nations and the Centers for Disease Control reports that men’s violence against women is the number one health concern for women in the U.S. and abroad. Why? Anthropologist Dr. Sanday compared the incidences of rape in 95 societies. Her research indicated that the frequency of rape was influenced most by the nature

of the relations between the sexes, the status of women, and the attitudes that boys acquire during their developmental years. Her studies further demonstrated that “rape-prone” societies tolerate and glorify masculine violence, encourage boys to be aggressive, view physical force as natural and exemplary, demean the role of women in economic and political aspects of life, and avoid “women’s work,” such as raising children and household chores. Does this sound familiar? Within the United States, we teach males that being aggressive and forceful is the winning formula for how to “be a man.” Inevitably, many men struggle against the paradigm of “macho” conditioning (strong, independent, virile and dominant) and are socialized to be unemotional. The fear of being labeled a “sissy” drives the healthy expression of emotions deep within, left to fester. Strict adherence to these gender roles confines the way we express our sexuality; therefore, challenging these gender roles and questioning what it really means to “be a man” should be embraced. For more info, contact Dr. Tory Clark at (775) 843-9593.

ave you ever done a “good deed” only to find out it harmed more than it helped? Perhaps you lent money to a relative, then discovered it was put towards an addiction you didn’t know they had. Maybe you pursued a career for idealistic reasons, later realizing it wasn’t a good match for you, and that the good you thought you’d be doing never really occurred. Or, conversely, perhaps you’ve been the victim of a scam or some other ruse of false benefit. Clearly, good intentions — whether they are your own or those you imagine others to have — are not a promise of positive results. And, somewhat ironically, actions without conscious intentions to be helpful sometimes set very positive things in motion. For example, you may get lost while driving, but discover a new store, restaurant or part of town that you really like.

Summer DETOXIFICATION Solutions Written by Diane Underwood

E

ver wonder how many environmental toxins you are exposed to? According to the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) 1 billion lbs. of pesticides are used annually in the US! That’s 500,000 tons of chemicals with a staggering number utilized by California. Reno is in the prevailing neurotoxic wind direction. Not to mention the repeated tons of herbicides used on most golf courses, GMO crops (or added to the GMO seeds’ DNA), parks, main streets, highways, your own yard and even toxic particulate from wildfires. The CDC reports respiratory disease is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US. Many people have allergies or “reoccurring infections” that are blamed on pollens or season change. That’s not to say people are not allergic to plants, microbes or the toxic particulate in the air, soil, food and water. Allergies are the immune system attacking itself via autoimmune inflammatory responses. Nervous system issues such as anxiety, depression or sleeping problems are commonly blamed on “chemical imbalances” or hormones and most people turn to chemicals for treatment. Some of these issues may manifest more chronic illnesses. Therefore, what can be done for autoimmune issues naturally, without the use of chemicals? Many books now are focused on detoxification. Elimination of toxins is top of the list from air, water, shower filters to food and synthetic ingredients. In truth, immunity reactions possibly may worsen over time as chemicals accumulate within nervous system cells and DNA from food, air conditioning chemicals, carbon monoxide, bacteria, fungi, mold, viruses, chlorine, aluminum, lead and mercury, to just name a few more. Because of this, it is even more vital to cleanse especially during the spring and summer months. More studies are lauding sauna therapy as a valuable clinical tool for environmental illnesses, cardiovascular (the leading cause of death), autoimmune and toxicant-induced illnesses, with multiple health benefits for regular users, mostly with repeated sauna use as therapy. Prevention is key. Namaste, Diane Underwood- Cleanzologist, PhD Hyperthermia Trainer

• A small grip of watercress • A few (long) radishes • Red cabbage sprouts

• Fresh cilantro or parsley

• 1 C cashews

• A few leaves of fresh basil

• Flowers of the season, wild pansies, rosemary, chive, ramson flowers

• ¼ C spring water • ½ clove of garlic • 1 TBSP of shallot or one small shallot • ¼ tsp sea salt

editor’s note

I’ve never been a fan of spring rolls at restaurants – I always find them fairly tasteless. Not these! The flavor of fresh vegetables and herbs, mixed with what I called the “cashew hummus” was like taking a big bite of summer. I brought the ingredients to work and my co-workers agreed. Many made sure to tell me how great it was, some saying they would send copies of this issue to friends and family who don’t live locally, one person commenting that this recipe should “borrow” the Lay’s slogan, “You can’t eat just one!”

spring

I made a few notes along the way. Maybe they’ll be helpful to someone else. • Each zucchini yielded about 20-24 slices for me. • I laid my slices out on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper, then spritzed them with an olive oil sprayer. • Resist the urge to overstuff! Less is more with this recipe, and that will also help you roll a tighter spring roll than I achieved.

The thing I like best about this recipe is the versatility. You don’t even have to make a bunch of these ahead of time for a party – let people make their own! Put out a small “salad” bar full of sliced herbs and veggies, and let people construct their own. It’s fun, and that way everyone gets what they want.
