PUBLISHER’S NOTE

FEATURE WRITERS Cheers, Healthy Beginnings readers, and welcome to July across the greater Reno-Carson-Tahoe region. With summer now fully upon us, we’re primed for long days filled with plenty of sunshine and hot temperatures. This means we’ll be shedding jeans for shorts, slacks for sundresses and sweaters for tank tops, and our skin will be on full display. So it’s not surprising that one of the common themes covered in several articles in the July edition of Healthy Beginnings surrounds the fact the skin is the body’s largest organ. I remember way back in grade school learning that fact, and I couldn’t at the time make sense of it while simultaneously staring at books showing the human anatomy. To my young brain, I correlated organs to the squishy things inside our bodies — whether the liver, brain, heart, etc. So, to think about something “squishy” (I was in grade school, remember) being on the outside of my body? No thanks.

A child’s mind will wander, no doubt, but it will also get smarter with each passing day, so notwithstanding my initial knee-jerk reaction of disgust, I quickly learned that yes, the skin is an organ, and it easily is the largest. In fact, according to National Geographic, the adult human body on average carries as much as 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) and 22 square feet (2 square meters) of skin.

Healthy Beginnings Magazine’s mission is to provide resources and information on alternative and integrative medicine, nutrition, fitness, green living, sustainability and the products and services that support living a natural, holistic and healthy lifestyle.

With something that large covering your entire body, it’s truly important to take proper care of your skin. As author Cassandra Walker writes in her article about proper skin care techniques (pages 14-15), “The key takeaway is that it is incredibly important to protect your skin to the best of your ability and take action if you do notice something out of the ordinary.”

Healthy Beginnings is a free publication distributed locally and is supported by local advertisers. Magazines are distributed monthly throughout the Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Minden, Gardnerville, Lake Tahoe and Truckee areas. If you have questions about Healthy Beginnings Magazine’s distribution, contact Candice Lindsey at clindsey@sierranevadamedia.com.

In a nutshell, that’s what much of this month’s edition is all about. Whether you want to learn why a plant-based diet can be the best way to battle acne (page 8); which natural and organic skin care products regional professionals love (page 16); or what new-age skin resurfacing procedures might be available in the area (page 18) — and plenty more — July’s Healthy Beginnings should have you covered. So enjoy the sunshine this summer, and make every day a good day — just be sure to protect yourself when soaking it all in.

Cheers, Kevin MacMillan Editor, Healthy Beginnings

Salad & Satisfaction

WITH WARM TEMPERATURES THE NORM, TRY A REFRESHING SALAD TO SUIT ANY PARTY SIZE By Cassandra Walker

P

lanning for a large group gathering can become a headache quickly, causing the host to opt for premade, prepackaged party offerings that are often overpriced.

Truckee Tavern Salad,

In an attempt to save time, we often sacrifice freshness and nutrition, something that the experts say shouldn’t be the case.

• Combination of mixed greens and gem lettuce • Sliced cucumbers • Cherry tomatoes • Sliced radishes • Sliced apples • Shaved fennel • Grilled chicken • Hard-boiled egg • Vinaigrette of your choice

“Just because food is expensive doesn’t make it high quality,” explained sous chef Nate Lapating from Truckee Tavern & Grill (truckeetavern.com). Your ingredients’ price tag is often indicative of its name-brand store carrier, rather than what’s actually in the bottle or the bag. The trick is to search for the freshest options, not necessarily the fancy name. Lapating suggests checking your local farmer’s markets to find fresh foods that you can usually find for affordable prices. His next recommendation is to keep it simple and stay true to natural flavors. “You don’t need to have lots of ingredients in a dish to make it taste amazing, because too many ingredients can muddle the flavors,” the sous chef said. His recommendation for a warm weather meal that will wow the crowd, while also taking into account their best nutritional interest, is a fresh salad with plenty of vegetables. For this rendition, Lapating suggests grilling chicken as your protein topping. If you visit in-house, the restaurant’s original recipe features delicious brined smoked pork and a house-made Dijon vinaigrette.

available on the lunch menu Ingredients:

Method: The beauty of this dish is that it can be made to suit your party size for any warm weather daytime occasion. Serve it small as a side salad or go heavy-handed on the lettuce and toppings to feed a larger party as your main course. Grill your chicken and hard-boil eggs ahead of time so you have prepared toppings to work with for your guests. Slice your cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, radishes and apples, and then shave fennel atop your bed of washed mixed greens. Arrange sliced grilled chicken and hardboiled egg on top and drizzle with a light vinaigrette.

Simple Dijon Vinaigrette: • • • •

½ cup olive oil ¼ cup diced onion ¼ cup balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp. Dijon mustard

Add all ingredients to a bowl or Mason jar, add salt and pepper to taste, whisk or shake until fully incorporated, and serve over salad.

e are all looking for the fountain of youth, especially when talking about the skin. It is so smooth and plump when we are young and then as we age … yikes, we begin looking for HELP! Our skin is important to our body because it is the largest organ. Not only does it hold us all together (bones, muscles and organs), it helps to rid the body of toxins and impurities through perspiration, toxins that would otherwise cause harm to our kidneys, liver and other organs.

Cleansing the body of toxins and parasites will also help the skin to function at a much higher level. When the skin is not working up to par, the impurities, dead cells, uric acid and other toxins will be deposited in our tissues or on the skin’s surface. So, start with a good complete, whole-body cleanse and notice how your skin will begin to get that glow back. After getting the body on the right track, you can start with adding some good supplements to support the body, especially the skin. Collagen, in all types, will help with different functions from preventing sagging muscles to wrinkles. Think Christie Brinkley and her “anti-aging” look. Adding a good Vitamin C serum in conjunction with a collagen on dry areas will improve skin tone and slightly reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Acne – finding my cure

FOR SOME PATIENTS, SWITCHING TO A PLANT-BASED DIET MAY BE THE ONLY OPTION By Melvin Ibarra Nario, M.D., H.M.D.

“Everyone experiences acne, you’ll outgrow it.”

T

his is what my dermatologist told me during my teens. As I waited and suffered through this, I saw my adult life wither away because it was getting worse. Then she said, “it’s genetics, you just have to live with it and use medications.”

It might not be easy for some, but moving to a plant-based diet has been proven to lessen impacts of acne. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES

Get Outside and RIDE

She had diagnosed me with severe acne. This was my disfiguring physical diagnosis, but the worse damage was the internal scars. I suddenly developed social withdrawal and anxiety in my relationships, which altered my life. Accutane was then prescribed to me as a last resort, and this gave me hope. I had 3 rounds of it. Initially, the acne went away, boosting my confidence again until … follow-up blood tests revealed that my liver enzymes and cholesterol were rising, prompting my dermatologist to stop.

Now I can confidently look in the mirror and say, ‘acne will not ruin my life anymore.’”

As it gets eliminated, acne reappears with a vengeance. Thus, the hope that I had for a normal life came tumbling. As I entered my medical career, I tried everything. Even in this stage, I was still suffering. Whether it was facial peeling, steroid injections, products and chronic antibiotics, all drained me financially and physically.

Out of desperation, the only thing left to try was the alternative path. The focus of which was to disprove the dermatological theory of “diet does not affect acne.” Transitioning into a more plant-based diet was initially difficult — the craving for animal products was hard. But, I had to do it! To my surprise, being a week in, I noticed the pimple count to have lessened and the oiliness of my skin improved. This motivated me immensely to continue this lifestyle as I have found the cure that I was searching for. Here are some guidelines that I followed:

1. A Harvard study in 2009 led dermatologists to conclude that a

“nondairy diet” should be recommended due to the hormones in milk that increases oil production on the face. Butter and skim milk contains the highest. The diet and genetic manipulation rendered by the industry to the cows extends lactation along with the hormones.

Headaches, head movement, breathing, blood pressure, dizziness, sinuses, TMJ

Neck muscles, shoulders, arms, tonsils, thyroid, asthma Heart, lungs, stomach Adrenal glands, liver, kidney Small intestines, colon, bladder, reproductive system Lower legs, sciatica, knees, feet

AUTOMOTIVE INJURIES can linger for years

2. According to a 2009 study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology,

topical 2 percent green tea lotion proved to lower pimple load in half of test subjects, and it lowered the severity of mild to moderate acne in six weeks.

3. Chocolate — especially milk-based chocolate — stimulates inflammatory enzymes. Even with cacao’s health benefits, it was noted to double the number of lesions within four days of consumption, according to a 2014 study in The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

4. Sunflower seed intake has shown to aggravate acne by adding three

extra pimples, according to a 2015 study in the Iranian Red Crescent Medical Journal, compared to non-sunflower seed subjects.

5. Lastly, per a 2012 study in the Journal of Dietary Supplements, ber-

beris vulgaris extract has been noted to lower down acne load by 43 percent in four weeks in moderate to severe acne.

The real treatment lies in focusing on the inside of our body and not the outside manifestations. Along with IV therapies, supplementation and lifestyle changes, my life has now taken a 360-degree turn. If only I had done this earlier in my life, the damage of the disease would have been less. I still experience “breakouts” here and there but not as severe as before. Now I can confidently look in the mirror and say, “acne will not ruin my life anymore.” To the ones who can relate to this story and are living it, do not give up! It took me years to find this, but as I impart the solution, the cure is now yours to use. gets your heart beating faster, pumping more of that oxygenated blood throughout the body. When that blood circulation brings oxygen flowing to your skin, your skin is brighter and rosier, and you look healthier and more youthful. Gentle twists can both improve digestion and reduce toxins. The skin is the largest organ of our body — kind of odd to think about, but true. Therefore, improving digestion and eliminating toxins is vital to healthy skin.

DO YOU SUFFER FROM

LOW TESTOSTERONE LEVELS?

Practicing sun salutations, a common Vinyasa sequence, gets your heart beating faster, pumping more of that oxygenated blood throughout the body.” And, remember that adage about being what we eat? Fast foods, processed foods and too much food can dull our complexion. If you indulge, or overindulge, yoga can help restore that youthful vital look to your skin. There is nothing like smoothing out lines and wrinkles to look years younger. Good news — yoga also reduces stress! Classes such as restorative, yin, or “calm and centered” (a specialty at The Yoga Pearl in Sparks) relaxes you so much you can’t help but smile — and smiling actually takes less energy than frowning, smoothes out those lines and usually causes others to smile back. I recommend you do it often to avoid lines (except laugh lines) and wrinkles. There is research to suggest that yoga can help to balance hormones. Now, we often think that imbalanced hormones just affect teenagers. If you are middle-aged, or live with someone who is, you know that it also affects that age group. The combination of deep breathing — especially making that exhalation twice as long as the inhalation, commonly called 2:1 or 1:2 breath — and meditation is a potent combination for reducing stress, which helps to balance those hormones for teenagers and their parents. There is also an emotional cleansing, which happens in a well-rounded yoga class (a class that has a balance between breathing exercises, physical exercises and meditation). As you rest in savasana (also known as corpse pose — this might sound creepy, but is often called a yoga nap by my students, and the reason I secretly think they buy their passes), you often feel “wrung out” emotionally, cleansed of negativity. This looks good on you.

Take the quiz to find out now!

I am forgetting things and I am less mentally sharp. 7. I feel less self-confident and more hesitant. 8. My sexual performance is poorer than it used to be. 9. I tire easily with physical activity. Testosterone: Helps maintain muscle and bone strength, restores sex drive and libido, improves overall sense of well being, reduces “bad” cholesterol and exhibits anti-depressent properties.

Outsmart the clock

HOW TO KEEP DOING THE THINGS YOU LOVE AS YOU GET OLDER By Carole Bucher, BA, GCFP

W

hat scares you most about getting old? For some it’s (1) not being able to care for ourselves or our loved ones; (2) not being able to do what we love; (3) fear of pain, injury or degeneration; and (4) death itself. Yet, we know aging and death are inevitable and these things will come to pass. So beyond specific spiritual support, what can we do to prepare for this transition more meaningfully and make it less frightening? Helping our bodies be mobile and comfortable is critical to peace of mind and health, strengthening our mental and emotional stability far beyond what you’d imagine. If you’ve been reading my monthly articles in Healthy Beginnings, you’re probably getting the idea. Our skeleton is our hidden ally which, when well organized and aligned, helps us feel and do everything better — especially as we age. Improving our skeletal posture and balance allows us to build muscle strength without injury, so that muscles pull through joints in a balanced way. When the skeleton is misaligned, muscles compensate and cause pain — a sure sign that something needs to change. But what and how? People often head to the gym or onto the street to jog/walk. This can be uncomfortable and even dangerous after long periods of inactivity. Why? Because we’ve stopped feeling our bodies, connecting to ourselves, and using our musculoskeletal support in safe, sensible ways.

This is where the Feldenkrais Method shines because of its unique approach to working with attention and awareness. You learn to connect to yourself as you did as a child, by feeling and sensing. Even the smallest effort you make to pay attention to movement in your body can make a huge difference. This is how your body and brain are designed to work. As you develop attention, you build confidence and become more alert and less prone to injury. Knowing where your feet and the rest of your body are in space allows your balance and general movement to improve. So does your mood. You’ll learn to avoid injury as you move more efficiently, comfortably and safely, at the same time reducing pain. You can do it at home using books, YouTube videos, CDs/DVDs; or, go to local Feldenkrais classes, workshops and private sessions. Of course, check with your doctor first. If s/he hasn’t heard of Feldenkrais, there are thousands of websites and articles online. Adopt a skincare routine You only get one body, so take good care of it and take into consideration the fact that your skin is the largest organ you have. So, show it a little love with these main tips: • Wash Your Face: Twice daily, once in the morning when you wake up and once before bed. You want to cleanse away residue from a night of your cells regenerating and also cleanse away the toxins that you are exposed to throughout the day, in addition to any makeup, sunscreen and sweat on the skin. • Nourish Your Body: You are what you eat, and your skin will thrive when fueled with healthy foods and plenty of water. Eating foods rich in Vitamin C and E will also help boost your body’s natural collagen production. Avoiding processed foods and eating a healthy, balanced diet will help correct skin issues and help create a healthy skin structure. • Find the Right Products: Many over-the-counter products are cheap in price, and oftentimes cheap in ingredients as well. Scrimping on your skin care regimen to save money short-term could cost you in the end when much of the active ingredients in the products you put on your face are more harmful than the sun damage itself. Stay away from products listing harsh chemicals like alcohol and petroleum in the first two to four ingredients on the label. Alcohol strips your skin, and petroleum eats up Vitamin C storage in the body. Vasaline, for example, is very damaging over time, as it clogs the skin and inhibits your natural respiratory factor, or ability for the skin to breathe. • Reapply, Reapply, Reapply: After cleansing your skin and before heading out for the day, you should always apply sunscreen. Always. It isn’t enough to just slap on some sunblock at the start of the day either; you must reapply it frequently or it is ineffective. Keep in mind sunscreens only last 40-80 minutes at maximum.

WHY WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE DAMAGE TO PROTECT YOUR BODY’S LARGEST ORGAN? By Cassandra Walker

Y

our skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis. Each has an important role in keeping us healthy and each can be monitored and treated to address skin abnormalities. The most important thing you can do for long-term skin health is preventative care: monitor your skin, protect it from the sun and atmospheric toxins, cleanse and moisturize and address issues as soon as they may arise.

Shiloh Boyer, a registered nurse, esthetician and community health science expert working in the Reno-Tahoe region, explained that the sun is enemy No. 1 one for the skin, with both long-wave UVA and short-wave UVB rays having negative impacts. “UVB are burning rays and UVA are aging rays. UVA is the bright sunshine day; it ages your skin, which can result in it having a leathery texture,” Boyer said. “UVB rays are also present in bright light, but a better example is a cloudy day. Clouds filter UVA rays but you are still exposed to UVB rays, which are more damaging long-term.

No matter the products you use, one of the most important things you can do to maintain your skin is washing your face twice a day. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES

“They create abnormal cell growth, which is not seen as an obvious injury, but it does damage the dermal layer.”

ably won’t need a lot of corrective skin care, but if you have skin conditions or abnormalities, you need to go by the ABCDE guide.”

Research shows that sun damage is one of the most easily metastasized forms of cell growth, Boyer explained, and patients who let skin damage go untreated experience abnormal cell growth, which in turn affects other parts of the body.

If you notice a mole that wasn’t there before, or see changes in a mole you’re aware of, use the ABCDE guide to monitor it and determine if you should see a professional:

The key takeaway is that it is incredibly important to protect your skin to the best of your ability and take action if you do notice something out of the ordinary.

Protect, shade, repeat

• Asymmetry: If you’ve always had a mole but notice one side of it is asymmetrical to the other. • Border: If the shape of the border of the mole has changed. • Color: If your mole changes from red to brown or brown to black.

Unfortunately for your cool-factor, your best bet in sun protection is to go with the chalky, ghostlike-finish that you find with a sunscreen using zinc oxide or titanium dioxide.

• Diameter: If the mole is getting larger.

“If you burn in 10 minutes, you can stay out in the sun 30 times that with an SPF 30. The 50s and 40s give you a little more time, but in an 80-minute window, you’ve used up all of the protection time, so reapplication is really important,” Boyer said.

In any of these cases, a skin care professional will perform a biopsy of the tissue in question and have it evaluated at a lab to let you know exactly what is going on.

She also stressed the importance of purchasing a quality sunscreen, because the chemicals found in the cheaper, mass quantity alternatives are using a chemical barrier instead of a physical barrier, and much of the time the chemicals are more damaging to skin than the sun exposure itself. Boyer said that she has also learned of research in infrared light damage to the skin for people who stare at screens all day — there are products for skin protection and even makeup, which block broad spectrum and infrared light. Always wear a hat for additional protection in the sunshine, and even if you’re skiing or it’s not a particularly cloudy day, Boyer urges everyone to apply and reapply sunscreen.

Things to look out for You are responsible for your body, and one of the best things you can do for preventative health care is be cognizant of what’s going on with yourself, how you’re feeling and how your skin looks. “Any time you have an injury to the skin, it’s considered a wound,” Boyer said. “If you’re young with no previous conditions, you prob-

LIFE’S A JOURNEY, MAKE IT A HEALTHY ONE.

• Elevation: If the mole was flat and is now raised

Products for sale at skincare boutiques typically offer better ingredients and higher doses of the active ingredients, which make a difference in skin texture.

Non-invasive tactics Facials are wonderful treatments for removing the dead layer of skin, while at the same time infusing healthy products into the skin. Facial treatments once a month would be ideal to keep up on cleansing, moisturizing, professional extractions and monitoring your skin. In the interest of saving money, Boyer suggests opting for a facial three times a year after big seasonal changes. Broadband light treatment is non-invasive, as it does not remove tissue. Instead it uses a light on the skin to help build collagen and elastin, activating your genes so they continue to regenerate long-term on their own.

Everything you put on your skin, even makeup, has an effect — don’t skimp too much on quality or you may end up using more chemicals than you should.

The broadband light treatment has shown a non-researched, unintended consequence of protecting patients against cancer cells. “It can help bring out some of that abnormality of cancer cells, and then those cells are no longer with you so it reduces your risk, in addition to providing overall quality, clarity and luminosity of your skin,” Boyer said. 5 ALL-NATURAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS RENO-TAHOE WELLNESS EXPERTS LOVE By Claire Cudahy

S

kin is the largest organ of the body. It’s our first line of defense against illness and disease. It’s also a passageway to our bloodstream. And with environmental toxins, harmful bacteria, viruses, pathogens and UV radiation constantly bombarding it, it’s important to be mindful of the skin’s health — and what you’re putting directly on it during your hygiene and beauty routine. “Anything you want to put on your skin you want to be able to consume as well,” said Melinda Choy, an acupuncturist and owner of the holistic health center Elevate Wellness in South Lake Tahoe. “Just as much as you want to eat organic food, you want to put organic products on your skin.” This month, Healthy Beginnings spoke with five regional professionals, including Choy, in the health, beauty and wellness sector to find out what all-natural products they love to use.

Abbey Kay | Reno lifestyle and beauty blogger at www.abbeykay.co “An all-natural product that I love to use every day is the Dry Shampoo from Pantry Products that is made locally here in Reno. I use the raven color (brown) in the mornings and at night in between washing my hair to soak up the oil that my hair produces naturally. It’s the best dry shampoo I have ever used, and I love it because it leaves your hair smelling like chocolate from the cacao.”

“One of my newfound favorites is the Palmarosa and Aloe Facial Cleanser by Earth Tu Face. The line is small batch and developed by two herbalists in California. A lot of their herbs are wild crafted and their products have no preservatives. It’s one of those cleansers where I get excited to wash my face. I love the infusion of the oils and the herbs — it doesn’t dry you out and leaves your face so soft.”

Lesley Aluffi | Esthetician and owner of Lesley’s Organic Skin Care in Reno “Right now my favorite all natural product is Eminence Organic’s Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser. The Lactic Acid Complex and mangosteen work together to lightly slough off dead skin cells and create a smooth, radiant complexion. It leaves your skin soft and smooth and smells like the perfect summer fruit.”

Elizabeth Grimm Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach in Reno “My favorite beauty product is the Hydrating Cream Hairbath from Innersense Organic Beauty. I found out about Innersense when I was researching the toxicity of ingredients in my beauty products. I used the Environmental Working Group (ewg.org) to investigate what I was using and to find safer alternatives. The shampoo in combination with their whole hair care line has worked great for my long hair and smells really good, too!”

Tim Cruse | Personal trainer and owner of BeStrong Fitness in Reno “Arbonne RE9 Advanced for Men Micro-Exfoliating Cleanser is by far my favorite. It is an all-natural, plant-based exfoliation/face wash that really does work! I love this product because it does not leave your skin feeling dry or oily (as many products do). It also is an all-natural product so I can be sure that no harmful chemicals or toxicants are being absorbed transdermally into my body and blood stream. I have never been a fan of many face washes or lotions, but this stuff is awesome.”

Turning back the clock

SKIN RESURFACING PROCEDURES — BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER By Cassandra Walker

T

hese days, as technology continues to mesh with the beauty industry, you can find an array of skin resurfacing treatments that can correct decades of damage, unlike previous products and techniques.

With that, many questions often abound: Who is a candidate for certain procedures? What does preparation take? Is there downtime? “We … do really educational consultations to communicate skin care concerns with a digital skin analysis to show skin damage underneath the skin; it puts you in your percentile for wrinkles, pores and texture and shows bacteria from acne,” Regina Fritz, practice manager for Renew MD Medical Spa (www.renewmdreno.com) in Reno, said in an interview with Healthy Beginnings. In addition to correcting skin abnormalities, resurfacing procedures also help promote self-confidence and give people a second chance at healthy skin when their childhood may not have included as much sunscreen as current times. “These procedures are great for promoting our client’s self confidence, we’re grateful to help people feel better about themselves,” said Pam Horton CPCP, owner of Millennium Medical & Spa Suites (www.millmedspa.com) in Gardnerville.

Laser skin resurfacing options RENEW MD:

Laser Genesis treatments feel warm to the touch, and the client can hear the pulsing of the laser. The sensation is similar to a light rubber band snap or quick pulse; there is mild discomfort but no pain.

Venus Viva is another facial remodeling and resurfacing treatment targeting the same skin issues and also helps tighten skin and treat acne scarring.

Venus Viva is a microneedling treatment, which is more painful than the laser, so the medical staff numbs the full face beforehand. During the procedure, the microscopic rectangular-shaped needle goes into the skin in a pattern across the face making microscopic holes in the skin so the skin heals itself, stimulates collagen and cell turnover.

MILLENNIUM:

The Pixel CO2 Laser by Alma Lasers targets fine lines, wrinkles, large pores, sun spots, acne scars, stretch marks and photo-damaged skin by emitting light energy to penetrate the skin, produce collagen and promote tightening.

BEFORE

RENEW MD:

Laser Genesis is among the most popular skin resurfacing treatments offered here; it targets pore size, redness, cell turnover, collagen, texture, fine lines and wrinkles. Most people are candidates for this procedure.

IPL Laser treatments restore brightness and youthfulness to your skin’s appearance by removing age spots on fair skin tones and improving wrinkles.

18

What it feels like

IPL Laser treatments are beneficial for fair skin tones that have sun spots and not recommended for dark skin tones as the treatment works by pulling dark pigments from the skin.

MILLENNIUM:

The Pixel CO2 Laser feels hot to the touch, so the medical practitioners numb clients an hour before performing the laser procedure. Millennium also offers microneedling, which Horton compares to aerating a lawn — after puncturing holes in the surface of the skin it reacts similarly by firming up and tightening, minimizing fine lines. Microneedling can be taken into a vampire facelift from there, which includes pulling plasma rich platelets from the blood and putting them onto the skin during microneedling to promote healing and collagen growth.

Procedure downtime and effects RENEW MD:

Laser Genesis treats clients twice a week for six sessions with no downtime and a slight pinkness to your face after the procedure. Venus Viva is done over three sessions sched-

BEFORE uled four weeks apart, and you may look sunburned the following day, with redness subsiding afterward. Nothing can touch the face, including water, for 24 hours after treatment to keep from introducing a reaction to bacteria or inflammation of the newly made holes in the skin. IPL Laser treatments are done in 30-minute appointments, three to six times for optimal results.

MILLENNIUM:

The Pixel CO2 Laser treatment requires four to five days of downtime after the procedure.

AFTER Microneedling procedures are less invasive, with clients able to apply makeup just a couple days after their appointment. Fritz explains that any procedures you’re having done that are non-surgical will require maintenance, somewhere from once a quarter to once a year. “Everybody ages differently so it depends on the person, but maintenance is a part of aging and we’re still aging, so maintenance is going to be part of anything you do,” she says. Whether you’re interested in having skin resurfacing and rejuvenating treatments done, experts urge everyone to drink plenty of water, wash their faces twice a day, protect their skin with sunscreen and sun protective clothing or accessories, and to get a professional consultation to better understand your skin and how fresh and glowing it could become. Nagalase, GcMAF and cancer

UNDERSTANDING HOW THESE ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS CAN TREAT CANCER By Robert A. Eslinger, D.O., H.M.D.

N

agalase and GcMAF are big buzz words in the alternative cancer treatment field these days. To help simplify and educate, I’ve put together a quick explanation of how these two relate to cancer.

Cancer is a metabolic disease To survive and keep producing energy, cancer cells must switch over to glycolysis alone as the source of their energy. Cancer cells need 18 times more sugar than normal cells to grow and prosper at all times. They literally become the “bullies on the block” by depriving normal cells of adequate nutrition. It has also been proven that cancer cells have between 10 to 100 times the number of insulin receptors on their cell membranes as do normal cells. These cells also enter into a state of hypoxia, which is a lack of oxygen. This combination creates an anaerobic environment of now-sickened cells that start a “fermentation” process.

Remember, the more cancer cells there are, the higher the fermentation process is. In an effort to survive detection from the immune system and thrive, cancer cells, in their evolution, have developed the production of a protective enzyme called alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase, or Nagalase for short. The Nagalase enzyme has the ability to completely shut down the activity of the localized immune macrophage cells, whose job it is to destroy any cell that has been harmed or is not functioning normally. With the macrophage cells immobilized, the tumor is effectively “cloaked” from detection by the immune system. This is the reason that someone can have a strong functioning immune system and still be growing a tumor.

GcMAF therapy “How,” you ask, “can someone get the Macrophage cells turned back on?” Fortunately, there is a therapy called GcMAF. GcMAF was discovered and proven in Philadelphia in the late ‘90s.

The MAF in GcMAF stands for “Macrophage Activating Factor.” Gc stands for the type of protein molecule. GcMAF is created in the body by the release of two sugar molecules from a GcProtein molecule. Nagalase degrades the GCProtein created by the body to the point it is unable to become GcMAF. Since GcMAF only lives for about a week in the body, without continuous conversion of GcProtein, the stores of GcMAF are depleted rapidly in the presence of the enzyme Nagalase. However, Nagalase can only destroy GcProtein and not GcMAF.

What does this mean? It means that the body cannot make its own GcMAF. Thus, the introduction of external GcMAF through injection into the body has been shown to be effective. This keeps the Macrophage cell activity against the cancer cells optimal. There is an additional caveat to keep in mind, however. If the body is deficient in Vitamin D, this therapy cannot work. To some, it is a surprise to discover their Vitamin D levels are so low. We have an easy Vitamin D oral supplement available to help boost deficiency. At Reno Integrative Medical Center in Reno, we also offer both the Nagalase test as well as GcMAF therapy. The Nagalase blood test is a good way to check the progress of treatment. Dr. Robert A. HEALTHY MIND

The gift of the child’s perspective By Andy Drymalski, EdD Adults can have a hard time seeing what a child sees. Although our education shines a light on some areas of life, it often dims the light in others. The beliefs and attitudes we have adopted to fit in with society can help us feel “normal,” sane or secure, but they also cast a shadow.

Children often have a greater receptivity and openness to new ideas and perspectives.

“Knowledge” can be a stepping-stone to further knowledge, but it may also be an impediment, for once we think we know something, we often close our mind to other points of view.

PHOTO: TERRY LOCKETT

A man in his mid-20s dreamed the following:

I

’m sitting at a long board room table at a meeting with another man and woman. The woman had been asked to evaluate the truthfulness of a small boy’s claim that there is a red ball at the bottom of a spiral staircase. Another boy had previously investigated this and said no ball was there. I tried to descend the staircase to see for myself but it got very narrow the further I went down and I couldn’t reach the darkened bottom. The woman reported her findings, sharing her conclusion that the boy who claimed to see the red ball was telling the truth.

Children, on the other hand, often have a greater receptivity and openness to new ideas and perspectives. Their capacity to pretend and playfully embrace an imaginary world is more pronounced. Their connection to the unconscious, the wonder and mystery of life and nature is frequently more active. They are generally more spontaneous, uninhibited, and expressive of their emotions. Unconcerned with presenting an adult persona, they allow themselves to be more playful, silly, and openly honest about what they feel and see. In this dream the small boy descends the spiral staircase, a symbol of circling the Self (or personality core), represented by the red ball. The spiral staircase becomes too small for an adult to get through. Only a child — or an adult capable of childlike openness — can gain access to certain of life’s secrets and gifts. The two men and the other small boy doubt the existence of this gift within the psyche. But the woman, who brings a more feeling and heart-oriented perspective, stands by the doubted boy. The dreamer had an edge against his inner child. He tended to see playfulness and emotional expression as immature and inappropriate for an adult. He thereby cut himself off from some of the wisdom, insight, and healing activities that a child’s perspective offers.

The spiral staircase leading into and out of the unconscious is a symbol of the path of individuation (self-discovery and personal growth), which the dreamer questions will lead to wholeness. But his inner child, the boy who hasn’t yet been indoctrinated to the accepted adult view of reality, knows it is there. Perhaps his inner woman will help the dreamer see it too. Then he might be able to share in the refrain of Bob Dylan when he sang, in his song My Back Pages, “Ah, but I was so much older then, I’m younger than that now.” Dr. Andy Drymalski is a Nevada-licensed psychologist and Jungian psychologist in private practice in Reno and Carson City. 10 STEPS FOR HEALTHY BRAIN FUNCTION (PART 7) If you smoke, you’re increasing the risk of heart disease. PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES

By William Clearfield, D.O.

EDITOR’S NOTE

This is a continuation of a series of articles by Willaim Clearfield, D.O., breaking down his 10 steps for healthy brain function. Visit www.hbmag.com to read parts 1-6.

Let us recap the seven (of 10) steps to a healthy brain covered thus far: 1. Keep Your Blood Sugar Balanced 2. Eat Healthy Fats 3. Get Adequate and Restful Sleep 4. Enough (but not too much) Vitamin D3 is Essential for the Brain to Function Properly 5. Get Your Gut in Order 6. Maintain Adequate Methylation. 7. “Clearfield Goes Hormonal, Balance Your Hormones.”

4. D Ribose: 5 grams twice a day – three times a day (95% absorbed in 30 minutes) a. Stabilizes and energizes the heart b. Improves cardiomyopathies, CHF (SD, DD), pre/post CABG, post MI c. Reduces oxidative stress and increases glutathione d. Other Uses: Skeletal muscle diseases, fibromyalgia, CFS, post-exercise endurance, performance enhancement, reduces oxidative stress, and relieves altitude sickness.

S

Next month, we delve into one of the most powerful steps one could take to preserve brain health: Step 9. The Exercise Cure.

tep No. 8 The eigth step — “A Healthy Heart leads to a Healthy Brain” — is mostly a matter of common sense:

1. Do not smoke. 2. Exercise at least 2.5 hours each week, and, limit TV watching to less than 7 hours a week (see the article www.psst.ph/7-ways-improve-memory for details). 3. Consume a high antioxidant diet (see “Teddy’s Leaky Gut” article from the April edition of Healthy Beginnings for details). 4. Maintain BP <130/<85; Total Cholesterol <200 5. Limit alcohol to no more than one drink daily (see Dr. Mercola’s tips at https://bit.ly/2jlyH3j for more). 6. Maintain a Body Mass Index less than 25.
