“Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?” – Indiana Jones

f you’ve ever seen any of the Indiana Jones films, it’s probably hard to imagine anyone other than Harrison Ford portraying the lead character. And can you picture anyone else playing Indiana’s dad, Henry, other than Sean Connery? Probably not. The truth is that both of these actors very nearly weren’t a part of the film series. It’s not exactly a secret but it’s definitely one of the lesserknown facts about the Indiana Jones movies. That got us here at Snippetz thinking: are there more snippets, of information about the films, the directors, the actors, etc that perhaps even the most hardcore Indy fan doesn’t know? Possibly. So with that challenge in our minds, we set to work to unearth some of the things that you just may not know about the Indiana Jones films! Indiana Jones... Continued on Page 2

WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE SNAKES?

Perhaps they added one too many snakes. Why? Well, one of the pythons in the massive pile of reptiles actually bit first assistant director David Tomblin while he was on set. It latched on and wouldn’t let go so Tomblin, in as calm a manner as possible, asked someone to grab the snakes tail and whip it so it would send a wave up the snake’s body and compel it to detach. Luckily, it worked and Tomblin returned to work after briefly receiving medical attention.

Indiana Jones asks that iconic question in the first movie, “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.” In the film, he’s deathly afraid of snakes and ends up in a pit nearly brimming with them. But in real life, Harrison Ford, the actor behind the Indiana Jones character, isn’t afraid of the slithering creatures at all. That’s saying a lot when you consider the scene in which Indiana faces off with a cobra that rises up and hisses at him. While that would be plenty to scare off most people, Ford handled it like a pro, even when the cobra became so agitated and spit venom at him. Of course, there was a pane of glass separating the snake from the actor, but that’s beside the point.

While the Well of Souls scene might make you squirm in your seat, imagining all those snakes, there’s one small detail that the producers of the film tricked us all on. Many of the “snakes” aren’t actually snakes at all; they’re legless lizards, identifiable by the earholes on the sides of their heads.

The pit into which Indiana Jones ends up surrounded by snakes is called the Well of Souls. In order to fill up said well, the filmmakers originally planned to have

Hollywood pulled another fast one on us when they created the super-spooky slithering sound supposedly created by all those nasty snakes sliding against each other. That sound was actually sound designer Ben Burtt sticking his fingers into a cheese casserole. They added the sound of wet sponges to the grip tape on a skateboard to achieve just the right effect.

MONKEY BUSINESS In the Raiders of the Lost Ark, a monkey appears in a large room with a group of Nazis and the producers managed to get him to raise his paw in a Nazi salute by putting a grape on a fishing pole and getting him to reach for it. The “Sieg Heil”esque chirps the monkey emits were actually performed by voice artist Frank Welker, who then went on to provide the voice of Abu the monkey in Disney’s

So, bats may not be crawly, but they certainly are creepy. Seriously. Ask anyone. The bats that fly overhead in the Temple of Doom are no exception. But though they were presented as vampire bats, they weren’t. They were the less-harmless but no less sinister-looking fruit bats.

have a giant snake (what’s with all the stinking snakes?!) wind itself around her in the Temple of Doom. But she panicked and wouldn’t do it. She later settled on allowing Spielberg to cover her with over 2,000 insects. There were so many, in fact, that crew members would go home and find bugs in their hair, clothes and shoes. Obviously, Capshaw still wasn’t thrilled with the compromise because she had to take “a relaxant” before shooting that scene.

“Aladdin” in 1992. Speaking of monkeys, what about those monkey brains in the feast during “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?” Nasty, to say the least but you probably guessed those weren’t real monkey brains. They were actually made from custard and raspberry sauce. Since the simulated monkey brains were presented as “typical Indian cuisine,” outcry arose that the scene was inherently racist, so Spielberg had the following note added to an early version of the script: “Because of his extremely sensitive nature, the director has requested that the monkey heads be simulated.” Ever wonder what a movie mash-up of the Temple of Doom and “Planet of the Apes” would look like? Well, we very nearly found out. In one of the many rewrites of the Temple of Doom script, Indiana was faced with trying to escape the Monkey King and his gorilla army. Lucas deemed the change too unrealistic (thank God). And luckily, he also turned down a rewrite that had Indiana being attacked by a rhino and then dying, only to be brought back to life by the same (not evil) Monkey King with a magic peach.

SNIPPETZ™ WEEKLY MAGAZINE a desire for a closer relationship without pointing ingers. It’s important that ingers are not pointed at the other parent, the child’s spouse/partner, or anyone else. It’s also important that the parent shows a desire to communicate by listening to frustrations that the adult child may have. If the parent was rarely present during childhood, he or she may express frustration or anger at that. It’s important to listen without judgment and begin understanding his or her point of view.

PATHWAY PARENTING

BONDING WITH ADULT CHILDREN

B

onding is most effective in a child’s younger years. Optimally, a mother bonds with her child during the pregnancy. Hopefully, the father begins the bonding process immediately upon birth. If this does not happen, the next best time is between birth and three-years-old. In many families, this still does not occur and it leads to dificulties and a lack of connection as the child grows into adolescence and adulthood.

It is not uncommon that when parents and a young child do not bond, the grown child, later, is not very responsive to a relationship in the sense of regular family visits and deep communication. This can become very frustrating to the parent, especially when grandchildren are involved in the equation. For most teens, if bonding did not already occur, they now carry a resistance to it. Many teens will carry this resistance into adulthood. Sometimes, they turn around later and express a desire to develop a closer relationship. Sometimes, they don’t. So what is a parent to do when the adult child no longer wants a relationship other than the occasional “how are you doing” type interactions and one annual visit per year?

Having a personalized touch is something small businesses can do that many big businesses can’t. A small-business site needs to include something that reflects the creativity and personality of its owner. People want character. Whatever your industry, tell your story online. When there is nothing on your site about whom you are or who’s on your team, people wonder about whether you are a good company from which to buy. Here are the 9 most important things experts say customers want to know: How your business is unique. “Who are you? What is unique about your business? Why should I buy from you?” You don’t need to write a novel, but tell people who you are and a bit about your philosophy about your business. A clear sense of what your company offers. It’s incredible how many sites you visit and you’re not sure what the company offers. Your home page should provide at least general information about

The key is to express, communicate and hopefully determine why the child does not initially want a closer relationship. The next step is to keep the invitation open for a closer relationship if he or she still shows resistance. It’s a process not to be rushed or pushed, but allowed.

THE 5000+ PERCENT ADVANTAGE PART 5.7

PERSEVERE POWER: ONE EASY THING YOU CAN DO TO HELP YOU PERSEVERE! By Dr. Ron D. Ross

D

o you have someone around you who whines about the sun when it’s hot and then when it is winter he/she complains about the cold? Do you have a friend or relative who dumps their problems on you but they never attempt to change the way they think, speak or act? Some people feel so bad about their miserable lives they go out of their way to make other people feel miserable. They shoot down new ideas, scoff at big goals, and snicker at grand dreams. On your journey to your goals you will meet resistance, frequently from those who are jealous or who don’t understand what you are doing or who may feel left in the dust, should you succeed. They will criticize you, ridicule you, and even mock you. If you allow them, they will bring you down to their level of non-achievement just to make themselves feel comfortable, or more correctly, to make you both feel miserable. Here is the one easy thing you can do to help you persevere: avoid negative people. Turn them loose. Let them go. OK, I know, it’s not always possible (like you’re married to him/her), so let’s talk about what’s possible. How should you let go of the naysayers and pessimists around you? Each situation, each person must be treated differently, but do begin to distance yourself from the toxic people around

you. Just because your phone rings does not mean you must answer it. Just because someone texts you does not mean you must reply immediately. You may have to politely explain to them why you no longer respond to their calls and texts, but you do not need to apologize for your need to stay positive. Because they are so wrapped up in their own negative emotional state they won’t fully understand your explanations or accept your apologies anyway.

Save 15%

Another thing you can do when you are with negative people is to respond positively. You cannot choose what someone says to you, but you can choose what you say to them. When they are negative, choose to respond positively. When they are looking at the cloud, you point out the silver lining. It will make you feel better and send them a message at the same time.

drawing the line from the top right side to a point 4 inches from the base. 3. Draw a horizontal line across the side panel to connect the two diagonal lines. 4. Cut out the top portion of the box, using the lines as a guide.

Here’s another idea: Choose to NOT share your life and dreams with them. If you don’t supply them fuel for ridicule they will have nothing to burn down. Also, the mystery of what you are doing and the progress you are making will drive them nuts!

BEAT CLUTTER WITH CEREAL-BOX STORAGE

Whatever you do, do it with grace and love. Don’t burn any bridges. There may be a day when things turn around for them and your relationship can be rekindled.

A

re your school kids’ end-of-theyear folders, projects and favorite magazines “tucked away” in a heap? Here’s a way to bring order to keepables that are drowning in piles. The loose items can be sorted and stored in recycled cereal boxes that your preteen and teenage kids have converted into handy bookshelf storage containers.

Then make one more easy choice: Choose to be with optimistic people as often as you can. You need positive re-enforcement, you need people who speak faith and hope and strength into your life. Find them, nurture them, and keep them.

So, before you toss this morning’s breakfast-cereal box into the recycle bin, upcycle it into one of these attractive clutter busters.

Mark Twain summarized what I’m saying when he wrote, “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.” – Mark Twain

You’ll need: --14-ounce empty cereal box with lining removed (or larger, depending on the size of items to be stored) --scissors --ruler --pencil --adhesive-backed shelf paper, gift wrap or leftover wallpaper to coordinate with room decor. --spray adhesive or double-sided tape, if not using adhesive-backed paper.

Here’s the fun: 1. Neatly cut off the top flaps of the box.

2. Measure and use a pencil to draw a diagonal line across the front of the box from the top left corner to a point 4 inches up from the base. Repeat on back side,

www.SnippetzMagazine.com

5

5. To decorate, use the box as a pattern for marking and cutting out paper. Attach it with tape if not using adhesive-backed paper. Or, an adult should use the spray adhesive according to manufacturer’s instructions. Alternate idea: Instead of decorating the outside of the box with paper, turn the box inside out to expose the plain cardboard on the outside for a natural look. After cutting the box into a storage container as described above, carefully pull the box apart on the long side and the bottom flaps, where it was glued together by the manufacturer. Turn the cardboard inside out. Re-glue along the same seams to reconstruct the box. When dry, insert four to five brads lengthwise through the long side seam to strengthen the container and add style. Extra storage container idea: For pencils, pens, markers, scissors and a ruler, remove the label on a clean, empty aluminum can with lid removed. Use the label as a pattern, or measure the can to determine the size of decorative paper. Attach paper with glue or double-sided tape if not using adhesive backed paper. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Pizza • Pasta • Lasagna Salads • Sandwiches Beer • Wine

BECAUSE IT’S JUNE June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month. It’s a great time to include more fresh vegetables and fruits in our diets. The latest Dietary Guidelines recommend that we all increase our vegetable and fruit intake. Fruits and vegetables provide a variety of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and fiber, and they lower your risk of developing certain chronic diseases. They also are naturally low in calories, fat and sodium, which can help you maintain a healthy weight. How many fruits and vegetables should you eat each day? The USDA’s MyPlate recommendations are based on your calorie needs for your age, gender and activity level. For a 2,000 calorie diet, you should eat 2 cups of fruit and 2 to 3 cups of vegetables a day. To learn what your individual needs are, use the customized Daily Food Plan on the MyPlate website. What counts as a cup of fruit or vegetables? In general, 1 cup of fruit or 100 percent fruit juice, or 1/2 cup of dried fruit counts as 1 cup from the fruit group; and 1 cup of raw or cooked vegetables or vegetable juice, or 2 cups of raw leafy greens can be considered 1 cup from the vegetable group. Before eating fresh fruits and vegetables, it is important to remember some basic food safety rules. • Avoid bruised or damaged produce and keep it separate from raw meat, poultry and seafood. • Perishable fresh produce, such as lettuce, herbs and mushrooms, and all cut or peeled produce should be stored in the refrigerator at 40 F or below. • Wash your hands for 20 seconds with warm water and soap before and after preparing fruits and vegetables. • Produce should be washed under running water (do not use soap) before eating, cutting or cooking. Then, cut away any damaged or bruised areas. • Always wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils and counters between prep of raw meat, poultry or seafood and produce. My recipe for Summer Fruit, Vegetable and Quinoa Salad is a meal in a bowl. It’s perfect for lunch or dinner on a hot summer day, and it will keep for two to three days in the refrigerator. (Additional information provided by Christeena Haynes, MS, RD, LD, former Nutrition and Health Education Specialist, Dallas County, University of Missouri Extension.)

SUMMER FRUIT, VEGETABLE AND QUINOA SALAD

Serving Anne & Mann’s Gourmet Ice Cream

Quinoa takes this recipe from a delicious salad to a complete meal. The grain has been called a superfood because its protein content is very high for a cereal/pseudocereal. It’s also a rich source of B vitamins, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B-6 and folate, and the dietary minerals iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. It is gluten-free and considered easy to digest.

t used to be that a veteran could literally put a name and phone number on a piece of paper, write a line or two about wanting to file a claim, and the Department of Veterans Affairs would be responsible for getting in touch to help fill out a form. The start date began when that first correspondence was received, and the veteran had a year to finish sending the information. Now back-of-the-envelope filing is no more. As of March 2015, claims must follow a set of new requirements and be on specific forms to be considered. As a result, a second lawsuit has been filed against the VA. SHINGLES MEDICATION CAN AFFECT MEMORY DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband had a severe case of shingles in October 2013. He still has pain. He was given Lyrica. Sometimes it helps, but his memory is affected. I’m leery about giving it to him. I’ve been giving him ibuprofen, which helps sometimes. Can you give me any advice? -- R.C. ANSWER: Many medicines are used to treat post-herpetic neuralgia, the pain that often follows shingles. This pain can be very severe and tends to be more prolonged the older you are. Pregabalin (Lyrica) is an effective medication for many people, but changes in memory certainly could be a side effect. I would be leery of giving it, too. There are several other classes of medication he can try. If his doctor is uncomfortable trying something else, a neurologist or pain specialist can help. Sometimes, small doses of several medications work better than higher doses of just one. Giving the shingles vaccine does not help once you have post-herpetic neuralgia, but it can prevent many cases, and most people who could benefit from the vaccine haven’t had it. Shingles questions are among the most frequently asked. The booklet on the shingles virus answers many of them. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been using MSG on my food as a flavor enhancement about all of my life. Some of my health-conscious friends say that using MSG is like putting “rat poison” on your food. I respond by saying putting salt on your food is worse than putting MSG on it. Does MSG deserve its bad reputation? -K.T. ANSWER: Some people have a sensitivity to monosodium glutamate, an amino acid normally present in food that is used as a flavor enhancer. Symptoms can include headache, muscle aches, nausea and other symptoms. It is particularly well-absorbed in liquid form, such as soups, especially those in Asian restaurants. If you don’t have a sensitivity to MSG, it is a very safe food additive. It does have some sodium, but in the usual amounts used, does not deserve its reputation. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You mentioned a treatment for ureter cancer called BCG. I would appreciate more information on this treatment. -- M.T. ANSWER: The ureters are the tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder. They are lined with the same kinds of cells as the bladder itself. So, ureteral cancer acts in many ways like bladder cancer. Often, multiple cancers are diagnosed at the same time. Surgery is the standard treatment for ureteral cancer, and the only way for a cure. Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) is a weakened tuberculosis bacteria that is used for some cases of bladder and ureteral carcinomain-situ, an early, non-invasive form of precancer. It can be very effective, but is not intended to be a curative treatment for invasive cancer. I mentioned it for a 90-year-old man who didn’t want surgery.

Within three months, the northern part of France would be freed and Allied forces would be preparing to enter Germany. • On June 2, 1774, the British Parliament renews the Quartering Act, allowing Redcoats to stay in private American homes. Disgusted by the dumping of 342 chests of tea into Boston Harbor six months earlier, Parliament reasserted British control over the colonies, especially Boston. • On June 7, 1893, Mohandas K. Blind and deaf from infancy, Keller circumvented her disabilities to become a world-renowned writer and lecturer. In 1904, she graduated cum laude from Radcliffe. • On June 4, 1986, Jonathan Pollard pleads guilty to espionage for selling U.S. intelligence information to Israel and is sentenced to life in prison. The former Navy intelligence analyst sold enough classified documents to fill a medium-size room. Israel continues to negotiate for Pollard’s release. • On June 5, 1993, Julie Krone rides Colonial Affair to victory in the Belmont Stakes to become the first female jockey ever to win a Triple Crown race. • It was the fourth U.S. president, James Madison, who made the following sage observation: “I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of the rights of the people by the gradual and silent encroachments of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.” • Jimmy Carter was the first American president to be born in a hospital. • Though the reasons are unclear, researchers have found that children of Mexican descent are less likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than children of other ethnicities. • In some cultures, slurping your soup is considered to be a compliment to the chef, while here in the U.S., it’s frowned upon as demonstrating bad manners. In New Jersey, however, it goes a bit further; in that state, public slurping of soup is illegal.

• If you suffer from pupaphobia, you experience an unreasonable fear of puppets and dolls. • During the 14th century, so many people in the city of Avignon, France, died from the Black Plague that Pope Clement consecrated the Rhone River to allow masses of bodies to be laid to rest in its waters. • Before the middle of the 18th century, it was not unusual for members of a play’s audience to be seated onstage, just a few feet from the performance. If viewers thought an actor’s performance was particularly bad, they might even try to bump the performer off the stage. *** THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: “The best way to predict the future is to invent it.” -- Alan Kay © King Features Synd., Inc.

SNIPPETZ™ BUSINESS SECTION

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

ARE YOU PROFITING FROM ABORTION?

I

t is estimated that on average 35 babies are killed each week by abortions performed at the Planned Parenthood facility here in Colorado Springs. Nationwide the number of innocent lives taken exceeds 3,300 a day. That is well over a million deaths a year. Last year Planned Parenthood nationwide was responsible for over 300,000 of those abortions and received nearly $350,000,000 in government – read taxpayer – funding. The culture of death has become big business. Unfortunately too many Christians, without even knowing it, are profiting from the business of abortion and contributing to organizations like Planned Parenthood. They are not doing so through their checkbooks, but it is being done on their behalf, stealthily, through their investments. I recently screened the holdings of the largest index mutual fund in America, the Vanguard 500 Index Fund. I knew what I was going to find but that did not make it any the less disheartening. Over 70% of the assets held in that fund are of companies involved in activities and industries that most Christians would find morally objectionable. There were lifestyle concerns, anti-family issues, companies that produced and distributed pornography and companies tied financially to the abortion industry. Over 28% of those companies were involved in the industry of death; either as a contributor to organizations like Planned Parenthood, or as a manufacturer of the morning after pill and contraceptives, or

Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings

as a provider of abortions at for profit facilities and hospitals, or by involvement in embryonic stem cell research and experimentation, or by making abortion on demand part of their employee benefit package. All these companies have a financial stake in a culture that denies our unborn children their humanity – and so do their investors. Without even knowing it the owners of the Vanguard 500 Index Fund are supporting and profiting from abortion and are doing so in a very big way. The Vanguard 500 Index Fund does not stand alone. Sadly, when I have run the same moral screens on many other mutual funds I have found their investments too put Christian shareholders in a place of moral compromise. Though the percentages change from fund to fund, companies financially involved in the abortion industries are major profit centers for the vast majority of mutual funds. So how can we manage our investments and stay true to our pro-life values?

Fortunately for the morally responsible investor there are a number of mutual fund companies that screen specifically for abortion and exclude all companies that have any financial interest in the industry. Fund companies like the Ave Maria Funds and the Timothy Plans have made life a core value in their portfolios. By moving Christ to the center of their investment portfolios, some mutual fund companies have found that you can do well by doing what is right. If you would like to find out more about these companies and others using moral screens, you
