n mainstream America, people usually worry about how they present themselves to others. If a rumor gets started about a wife cheating on her husband, typically that unwanted attention is just that: unwanted. But mainstream America has nothing to do with Hollywood, you can be sure. In Hollywood, being in the public eye means you’re still someone. The worst thing that could possibly happen is for you to fade into the background. You have to keep people talking about you, keep them interested in you. In the real world, that might be easier said than done. But we’re talking about Hollywood. And in Hollywood, as we’ve already said, any publicity is good publicity. We at Snippetz were intrigued by that statement and so we’ve decided to scrounge up some of the most outrageous Hollywood publicity stunts and compile them for you right here!

A massive (literally) iconic feature of Hollywood is the huge white “Hollywood” sign that graces the side of a hill in the city and using it in a film is basically the easiest way to signify that the story is set in California. Anyway, the sign we see today wasn’t actually the meant to be a landmark. It was meant to advertise a fancy new subdivision that Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler was building in 1923. The subdivision was called “Hollywoodland” and the original sign, which cost $21,000 to make and stood 50-feet tall, also said just that.

“I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A GANGSTER” If you were in the witness protection program because you were the target of a possible mob hit, would you come out of hiding just to stake your claim as the inspiration for the character of a super-successful movie? Well, the real Henry Hill did just that. Played by Ray Liotta in the movie “Goodfellas,” Hill was the main character and narrator of the story. In order to attempt to garner his share of the royalties from the film, Hill was literally kicked out of the Witness Protection Program because he wouldn’t stay hidden. Of course, since the movie chronicled his long list of criminal activities, no royalties were forthcoming. That didn’t stop Hill from trying to capitalize on his newfound fame. He began selling his own paintings on eBay, opened a slew of gangster-themed restaurants throughout the country and was a regular guest on The Howard Stern Show.

Initially, it seemed like a great idea . . . until the Great Depression hit. The houses in Chandler’s subdivision were way too expensive for anyone to afford and the sign began to crumble from a lack of maintenance. After years of disrepair in which the “H” had blown away and the “LAND” was

If you’ve ever been to a courthouse or seen one in a movie, you’ve likely seen a granite representation of the Ten Commandments. You probably assumed those monuments were there as a reminder of the core values and principles on which our judicial system and laws were built. You probably even assumed they’d been there for ages. On both accounts, you would be dead wrong. When the film’s director, Cecil B. DeMille was working on “The Ten Commandments” film, he found out that a judge from Minnesota had been working with a Christian fra-

during a showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” You’d think that with how tragic that whole scenario was, no one would want to stir up any more shooting drama inside a movie theater, especially not less than a year later. But Bob Wilkins, manager of the Goodrich Capital 8 Theater in Jefferson City, Missouri apparently didn’t feel the same way. He actually arranged for a fake gunman to crash a screening of “Iron Man Three,” supposedly to boost ticket sales. Naturally, movie-goers called the police, not knowing that the gunman was just an actor. In response to his obvious lack of judgement, Wilkins said that he didn’t feel any regrets about the incident. He claimed his job was to entertain people. And here we thought theater managers were in charge of running the theater; who knew he also doubled as an entertainer?

ternal organization to send framed versions of the Ten Commandments to schools and publics buildings for display. DeMille saw an opportunity for some great publicity for his upcoming film and contacted the judge to suggest replacing the framed certificates with bronze tablets instead. The judge declined but alternately gave the go-ahead for construction of about 150 granites tablets. The film’s stars Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner traveled the country promoting the film and dedicating the tablets. The tablets remained and were given approval to stay in place, even after Thomas Van Orden sued the state of Texas in 2005, stating that the tablets represented an unconstitutional governmental endorsement of religion. Essentially, the Supreme Court made a ruling based on a movie publicity stunt.

invited to find the location of a hidden $1 million cache by using clues from the movie. The first one to find the hiding place would get a real million-dollar payday. The production company was hoping to prey on the greed of its audiences to launch ticket sales. However, that idea didn’t quite pay off. In fact, the movie didn’t even gross enough to cover the cost of the contest. So when a California woman found the certificate for the secret $1 million inside the Statue of Liberty’s nostril, the studio had to fork over the entire $989,033 it made in box office proceeds.

THE STATUE OF LIBERTY NEEDS A TISSUE The movie “Million Dollar Mystery,” released in 1987, involved one of the most expensive and ineffective publicity stunts ever. The plot of the film follows a group of treasure hunters who are looking for stockpiles of cash. The production company made the natural connection to real-life and partnered with Glad Bags to sponsor an authentic treasure hunt that would go along with the film’s release. At the end of the film, moviegoers were

So how do you separate the emotional and intellectual conflict between quitting and persevering?

By Dr. Ron D. Ross

Q

uitting seems to be a way of life for so many people. How many teenagers do you know who quit school a few months before graduation? Look up and down your street – how many divorced people live around you? Did you ever get so mad at your boss that you walked off the job? What’s with all the quitting? You’ve heard the old saw, “Quitters never win and winners never quit,” but does it always apply? Sometimes we MUST quit. Sometimes we have no choice. Like Terry Fox, who started to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research running on a prosthesis on his amputated leg. After several thousand miles his run was interrupted by a massive attack of more cancer and he was forced to suspend his run and died soon thereafter. Like the lady who worked valiantly to save her marriage but her husband refused to cooperate and ran off with another woman. Like the various times in your and my lives when we could not see our way out of the ditch into which we had driven ourselves so we slammed on the brakes and just sat there for awhile. However, the times we are forced to quit are far fewer than those times when we just give up. From the moment we begin a challenging project, the reasons to quit come flying in our face. It’s too hard, it will take longer than planned, it costs more than we can afford, it

It begins with a clear definition of your “why”. Why you are doing what you are doing? If the “why” is clear and righteous and worthy, then the “how”, though perhaps to be interrupted, altered or delayed, will always find a way.

BINGO American Legion post 9-11 at The Depot Primrose St. - Palmer Lake Every Saturday Night 7:00PM

SNIPPETZ™ DINING GUIDE 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1 cup diced and peeled potato 2 teaspoons canola oil 1/2 cup diced, purple onion 1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 8 corn or whole-wheat tortillas

QUESADILLAS GET A HEALTHY MAKEOVER

Q

uesadilla is a Spanish word for “little cheese thing.” The recipe typically calls for mounds of cheese and pork chorizo between two corn tortillas. Although there’s just a small amount of cheese in this recipe, it’s the lean ground chicken, the spices and the delicious salsa that are the stars of this healthy dish. The substitution of lean ground chicken breast for pork chorizo cuts down on the calories without sacrificing any of the flavor. Chorizo sausage is usually made with ground pork and combined with fat, wine, paprika and salt and stuffed into a casing made of tripe. Paprika and red chilies are the primary spices in Mexican chorizo and infuse it with a deep reddish color. This recipe uses the same spices as the pungent Mexican sausage to marinate the ground chicken, allowing you to mimic the flavor of chorizo while cutting out the fat. Small, diced potatoes add a distinctive texture and also absorb the spices. The avocado salsa completes the dish and adds a burst of fresh citrus with the addition of the lime juice. Try one of these healthy quesadillas, accompanied by a dab of fat-free sour cream, if desired, for breakfast, lunch or dinner. You’ll never miss the original recipe!

eniors feel better after cleaning the house, according to a study done by the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing. Who knew? Researchers looked at various influences on a senior’s health and emotional well-being, such as environment, smoking, income, education, health, socioeconomics and exercise. The participants (ages 65 to 94) had one serious illness, were enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare, and had physical limitations that kept them from at least one daily task, such as bathing, handling medications or dressing. What the researchers didn’t expect was that doing housework and maintaining their own property had more of an impact on seniors than,

I saw something similar when I helped a frail neighbor clean out her pantry. While roomy, the pantry was a jumble of items stacked on top of one another amid outdated, expired food. It was difficult to even write a grocery list because it was impossible to tell at a glance what she had.

The lesson here: With a small amount of effort, we can keep our environment neat (and safer) ... and the exercise is good for us. ou have to wonder what some people are thinking when they try to put one over on the Department of Veterans Affairs. Item: In Boston, a veterans service officer date stamped a stack of blank documents, which then allowed him to backdate claims he was processing. He managed to get all those forms backdated because the date-stamping machines weren’t locked, as they’re required to be. Item: In Colorado, an employee high up the food chain circumvented hiring practices by creating a position especially for a former co-worker with whom she had a personal relationship ... using that person’s resume as

THIS IS WHY WE MULCH!

s it just me or should Punxsutawney Phil be fired? Last year the famous ground hog predicted a late spring and this year he predicted an early spring. Well Phil you got it a little backwards! That’s okay because we are always prepared for a late snow here, in fact most of us are praying for it. And this is just another reason mulching our garden beds tend to top our to-do list throughout the year. Not only is it a key factor in xeriscaping because of its ability to help retain moisture, but it is also key because of its ability to decrease temperature fluctuations.

Item: A supervisor removed electronic controls that are used to process claims and told staff to “disregard Veterans Benefits Administration policy when processing some claims.” Out of 139 files checked, 100 had the controls removed. As a result, “some veterans may have continued to receive additional compensation for dependents that they were not entitled to receive.”

In spring we often get warm days that can encourage early plant growth. If those warm days are then followed by a hard freeze it can wreak havoc on those tender plant shoots and blossoms. Mulching provides some temperature stability. Waiting all year for flowers to emerge in the spring just to be killed

by a late frost is the worst. So resist peeling away your mulch too early in the season. If you do remove some than replace it with a fresh layer right away. I find replacing areas of my yard with fresh mulch to be very satisfying, like cleaning out a closet at home. My vegetable beds on the other hand get mulched over with compost in the fall and then worked into the soil in the spring. And other areas of my yard get a light layer poured on top, because I am lazy but I still need to satisfy the Virgo inside me. In addition to being an important temperature stabilizer and moisture retainer, mulch is aesthetically pleasing and can be an important factor in a fire-wise landscape. With warmer weather on the way, if your yard missed the mulch train last fall or needs a touch-up, now is as good a time as any to add some to your yard. There is no doubt that plenty of hot days are in the future and anything that will help conserve water and cool down your landscape is a worth while investment.

Item (and it’s a biggie): Seven years after the 2006 data breach, VA information security employees and contract workers still reacted with “indifference, little sense of urgency, or responsibility concerning a possible cyber threat incident” and allowed employees to work remotely and access the VA network on their personally owned equipment ... from China and India! Further, when ordered to stop, the employees failed to try to determine if any of the VA data had been compromised. And this, I fear, is only the tip of the iceberg.

SNIPPETZ™ HEALTH AND WELLNESS that it works, but the biologist and chemist in me doesn’t understand how. -- D.M.

JURY’S STILL OUT ON E-CIGARETTES

ANSWER: Lactase, the enzyme in Lactaid, breaks down the milk sugar lactose, which many people can’t digest, into smaller sugars, glucose and galactose. The symptoms of lactose intolerance include bloating, gas and diarrhea. It works best in a slightly acidic environment, but will indeed be digested like other enzymes in the stomach once stomach acid can bring the pH in the stomach to the very acidic range. It works only because it is able to break down sugar faster than it is itself broken down. Clever people have designed lactase in forms that resist stomach acid and are active in the small intestine, which ought to work better. However, Lactaid works well enough for many people intolerant of milk.

On the good side, if they help you quit your smoking habit, they may have a benefit to you. You should use them to help you quit smoking, then ideally quit using them as well.

ANSWER: Fresh vegetables with beta carotene and certain multivitamins and minerals have been shown to slow the effect of agerelated macular degeneration. It may be that you would have gotten macular degeneration both sooner and more severely had you not had a healthy diet and taken vitamins. Unfortunately, we don’t know of any preventive treatment -- nor any treatment once the disease has been diagnosed -- that is 100 percent effective.

However, there is a bad side, and that is when nonsmokers start using them. Some users don’t think of them as cigarettes at all, calling them “hookah pens,” “vape pens” or other euphemisms. • On May 13, 1607, some 100 English colonists arrive in Virginia to found Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in North America. The first colonial council was held by seven settlers whose names had been chosen and placed in a sealed box by King James I. • On May 14, 1904, the Third Olympiad of the modern era opens in St. Louis, Missouri. Like the Second Olympiad, held in Paris in 1900, the St. Louis Games were poorly organized. There were few entrants other than Americans in the various events, and, expectedly, U.S. athletes won a majority of the competitions. • On May 16, 1849, the New York City Board of Health is finally able to establish a hospital to deal with a cholera epidemic that would kill more than 5,000 people. The disease took hold on Dec. 1, 1848, when a ship arrived from France carrying the bodies of seven passengers who had died from cholera.

• It was noted 20th-century British playwright Tom Stoppard who made the following sage observation: “It is better to be quotable than to be honest.” • You’ve probably seen ventriloquists perform, but you may not realize that it’s a skill not limited to humans. The crested bellbird, which can be found in the wetlands of Australia and Venezuela, throws its voice in order to misdirect predators. • Bibliophiles beware: Using a public library can carry hidden risks, as a 20-yearold woman in Wisconsin discovered when she checked out “White Oleander” and “Angels and Demons.” Heidi Dalibor never returned the books, and she didn’t respond to letters or phone calls requesting that she return the books and pay the overdue fine. Eventually, Dalibor was arrested by local police, who handcuffed and fingerprinted her, and she wasn’t released until her bail was paid.

• We’ve all heard the childhood tale of George Washington chopping down a cherry tree, then ‘fessing up because he could not tell a lie. Most history books don’t mention other aspects of his childhood, though; for instance, did you know that our first president, when he was 10 years old, was a champion wrestler and long jumper? • If you were a member of the middle class in Victorian England, you might have spent an enjoyable afternoon with friends on a boat, searching for bizarre sea creatures. This popular pastime was known as “monster spotting.” • Those who study such things say that the smallest vertebrate in the world is a type of carp: The Paedocypris progenetica grows to be less than half an inch long. ***

FUND RAISING EVENT AND “GO FUND ME” PAGE HELP WITH CANCER BILLS

STRIKING CANCER FOR KIM

F

riends, family, well wishers and supporters of Kim Hann will gather at the Brunswick Zone XL located on 1180 Interquest Parkway Colorado Springs, Colorado for a fund raising event on Tuesday, June 2nd between 6pm & 8pm. You can book a lane for 6 for $70 or pay $25 for individuals for 2 hours of bowling. Shoes are included in the costs. But no one has to wait until then to start helping as her “Go Fund Me” (http://www. gofundme.com/KimsCancer) page is available for donations now! Kim suffers from leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. Such a procedure is a huge ordeal under any circumstance. It will take several weeks to complete all the steps that lead up to this operation, which includes breaking down Kim’s immune system, in the event that her body rejects the new bone marrow. But the ordeal does not end with successful surgery. There are still many weeks of treatment left afterward.

After Care Expenses A really big and uncovered expense for Kim will be the “aftercare” she will have to receive. After she is released from the hospital, Kim will go back to the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute, which is located some distance from her home. There she will need to have housing as well as a caregiver provided, none of which are covered by insurance.

Family members expect her to be in the hospital for 3+ months until her immune system has recovered enough for her to be released.

SnippetzMagazine.com

Outpatient Recovery From there she will start an outpatient recovery that requires multiple doctors visits each week. This could take up to another 6-8months according to Kim’s doctor.

Kim’s brother, Andrew Wolfe, says that he and others are working hard for Kim. “We have been passing around flyers as well as informing people about her Go Fund Me page via personal Face Book postings,” he said. “We are investigating other fund raising opportunities like bake sales or a donation dinner.”

How To Help Kim You can help by booking a lane or RSVP to MyBetterFuture13@ gmail.com for the Brunswick Zone event. In the meantime, to see other ways to help, contact: Andrew Wolfe at MyBetterFuture13@gmail.com. Or simply go to the Go Fund Me page here http://www.gofundme.com/ KimsCancer and donate now.

WE GUARANTEE YOU’LL ENJOY YOUR VISIT!

Kim and her husband support their 2-year-old daughter and 2 sons aged 5 and 8. The funding will be used for covering the household bills and groceries while Kim is in recovery from the transplant.
