“A spy, like a writer, lives outside the mainstream population. He steals his experience through bribes and reconstructs it.” – John le Carre, English writer

T

he art of spying has long been a subject of great interest for people all over the world. The wildly successful James Bond and Jason Bourne movies series can attest to that. But the inspiration for those spy flicks wasn’t pulled out of thin air. Spies, real live spies, have been around for ages and have played important roles in shaping history. Now, we’re not saying that the outrageous scenarios that the movies portray are true to life. But it’s safe to say that the life of a real spy was anything but ordinary. Doesn’t that sound intriguing? We thought so

to, which is why Snippetz has focused our attentions on uncovering the history of real life spies. Of course, we can’t highlight all the known spies throughout history so here’s a sampling of some of the more interesting ones.

Stephenson also headed up Britain’s “Baker Street Irregulars,” a group that spied on the United States, hoping to push them into the war before the attack on Pearl Harbor did it for them. One of his attempts included creating a fake map of South America that detailed a fictitious plan by Nazi Germany to take over the Panama Canal. President Roosevelt never suspected the map was a fake. Why would he? No one else suspected anything and Stephenson infiltrated White House so completely that he was even a consultant when it came to forming the Office of Strategic Services, later known as the Central Intelligence Agency.

INTREPID Let’s just jump right in with the man that inspired one of the greatest spy characters ever to grace the silver screen: James Bond. That man was Sir William Samuel Stephenson. His code, given to him by Winston Churchill, was “Intrepid.” He was a decorated fighter pilot, boxing champion, businessman, inventor and senior representative of British Intelligence for the western hemisphere in its entirety during World War II. Stephenson founded a secret spy training camp in Canada, called “Camp X,” which produced some notable graduates from the program, in-

JUDO-CHOP! In some of the cheesier spy flicks, you’ve probably seen the main character do some sort of martial arts move on the enemy that left said enemy dead. Well, in the case of Nancy Wake, that’s actually true. Wake was a self-trained journalist who worked for Hearst newspapers as a European correspondent during World War II. She was also a spy. In her travels, she witnessed incredible horrors that the Nazis enacted on random people and felt the need to do something to fight back. She joined the French Resistance and, working as a courier, used her looks and charm to dupe the Gestapo, all the while helping Allied military personnel flee Marseille.

Wake became known as the “White Mouse” because she was so elusive. She even had a five million-franc bounty placed on her head. After fleeing France, she trained fiercely and was responsible for organizing weapons and supply drops, engaging in combat, guerrilla attacks and sabotage missions when necessary. That’s when she encountered an SS sentry and, with a swift judo-chop to the throat, killed him on the spot. Wake became the most decorated servicewoman by the end of the war.

BOWSER THE BROWSER OK, that wasn’t her official code name or anything, but the title fits Mary Bowser perfectly. Born into slavery, Bowser grew up working in the Van Lew household in Richmond, Virginia. She was sent north to get an education and even spent time on a missionary trip in Liberia. When she returned to Richmond, she married and was freed by the surviving family members of her master, John Van Lew, when he died in 1843. Van Lew’s daughter, Elizabeth Van Lew, was an abolitionist who made a name for herself by running a spy ring for the Union during the Civil War. One of her best and brightest spies was Bowser, who landed a position in the Confederate White House, led by Jefferson Davis. With a nearly genius mind and an eidetic (photographic) memory, Bowser presented herself as a dim-witted but competent servant. Assuming Bowser could neither read nor write, people within the household didn’t feel obligated to hide important papers from her. She read them, memorized them and reported back to Van Lew’s spy network. Eventually, Bowser aroused suspicion and fled the Davis house in 1865, but not before she attempted to burn it down. She didn’t succeed but she did manage to escape the war with her life and went on to tell about her experiences.

WILLY WONKA WAS A SPY Maybe Willy Wonka wasn’t the spy, but his creator, Roald Dahl sure was. In fact, he was a part of Stephenson’s Baker Street Irregulars. His job? To act as a social butterfly of sorts and mingle with the rich and famous in order to learn whatever information he could and report back to the British Empire. Dahl was rumored to obtain said information through activities in the bedroom and Antoinette Marsh, the I Spy a Spy!... Continued on Page 3

daughter of a Texas newspaper publisher even said, “I think he slept with everybody on the East and West Coasts who had more than $50,000 a year.”

H21 Speaking of using one’s beguiling ways to obtain top secret information, we turn now to Mata Hari, one of the most famous female spies of all time. Born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle, Mata Hari made a name for herself as a courtesan and exotic dancer who catered to high-ranking military men and politicians. Because she was a citizen of neutral Holland during World War I, Mata Hari traveled Europe offering her services as she went. Mata Hari caught the eye of the German consul in Holland, who decided to enlist her help as a spy. He gave her the codename H21and used her to gather information from her clients. Strangely enough, while she was spying for Germany, French Intelligence also approached her with a request to be a spy. Because she was educated, could travel easily, spoke several languages, Mata Hari was a perfect candidate as a spy. Unfortunately, while she was able to do her job fairly well, playing both sides of the field ended up being her downfall. She was executed by the French for fraternizing with a German officer, even though that’s what she was being paid to do.

Virginia Hall, also known as “Artemis,” was a U.S. spy who worked with the Special Operations Executive, and later the CIA, during World War II. Her work with the French Resistance and the French Underground in Vichy led the Gestapo to dub her “the most dangerous of all Allied spies.” While that’s a huge distinction in and of itself, especially for a woman, Hall also had another unique characteristic – she only had one leg. The other was amputated from the knee down. Apparently, that didn’t slow her down one bit.

SNIPPETZ™ DINING GUIDE My recipe for Sauteed Catfish with Anchovy Chimichurri showcases two relatively inexpensive but nutritious types of seafood in a simple, flavorful dish.

SAUTEED CATFISH WITH ANCHOVY CHIMICHURRI

A FISH STORY

S

ince prehistoric times, man has seized a spear, fashioned a rod with string or tied a net together to pull a meal from streams and oceans. Even today, in some cultures, fishing is much more meaningful than just providing food. It’s a way of life, handed down and etched into the heredity. Taking food from the water was, and is, the most basic way to provide sustenance and survival. Today, food choices abound. Having fish as a part of our diets is not a necessity, but it’s a common and a healthy choice. Along with being a naturally low-fat protein, most fish, especially fatty fish, are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which contribute to heart and brain health. Omega-3s also can be found in nuts, flaxseed and soybeans. Choosing the right fish is important. Some fish are susceptible to mercury and other environmental contaminants. Other fish are in danger of becoming overfished. So what’s a fish lover to do? Luckily, new fishing practices have evolved that allow us to choose types of fish we can feel good about eating. There also are informative websites like www.seafoodwatch.org that provide up-to-date information about the best types of seafood to serve. Here are a few suggestions from eNature: • Catfish: responsibly raised, fast-growing herbivores • Dungeness Crab: from well-regulated fisheries • Salmon: wild caught • Crayfish, crawfish or Crawdads: appropriately farmed • Anchovies: fast-growing and abundant • Shrimp -- Atlantic Northern Pink: Abundant and captured without environmental damage • Scallops: responsibly farm-raised and abundant Along with species and harvesting methods, it’s important to choose the right place to buy your fish. Select a store known for selling in large quantities on a daily basis, so you’ll have some assurance that your fish is fresh. Never buy packaged fish unless it’s frozen, and then make sure you read the labels and check the producers. Don’t be afraid to ask the fishmonger to let you smell the fish. Fresh fish should have no smell, a translucent quality to the meat and be firm to the touch (although they’re probably not going to let you touch it).

In 2009, AARP joined with the Blue Zones project to add years to the lives of people in Albert Lea, Minnesota. The end result: The life expectancy of the nearly 800 participants rose, simply by making a few changes in their lifestyle and diet. Buettner’s books are worth reading. “Blue Zones” (subtitled “9 Lessons for Living Longer”) also is available on Amazon.com or BlueZones.com. Be sure to look for the updated second edition released in 2012. A new addition is “The Blue Zones Solution,” which includes information on diets (and the science behind them), recipes, superfoods, community, family and the routines and personal stories of those in Buettner’s research.

FIXES DON’T CURE LONG VA WAIT TIMES

n spite of fixes, health care doesn’t always get better at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

If you live in Jacksonville, Florida, your wait times for appointments are the worst in the country. While the national average of appointments beyond 30 days is 5.9 percent, Jacksonville’s is an astounding 23.3 percent. Fayetteville, North Carolina, is right behind, with 23 percent of requested appointments going over 30 days. While the VA announced a new 250,000-foot medical facility will be built in Fayetteville, that doesn’t always help the wait-time problem. A new VA clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, hasn’t relieved veterans’ wait times for appointments. In the seven months the

with a rural population, a large military presence, and those in Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and New Mexico.

If you’re interested in introducing more ladybugs into your garden it’s best to do so when the weather is on the cooler side. When you get your ladybugs home keep them in the refrigerator. They will stay dormant until you can release them in the cool of the evening or early morning. As long as there is food for them they will stick around, but it is suggested that you spray their wings with a 50/50 mixture of water and soda to ground them temporarily until they find food.

adybugs are probably what come to mind when you hear beneficial insect. They are found nearly everywhere and highly regarded by farmers and gardeners alike. They’re most successful when it comes to eating aphids, but (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc. are also very talented in eradicating mites, scales, mealy bugs and many other soft bodied insects and their clinic has been open, the number of eggs. Ladybugs hibernate in the appointments delayed by 30 days or more has actually risen from 7 percent winter and tend to take a siesta in the middle of summer when it’s too to 11.5 percent. hot to do anything else! But during Besides these locations, other areas the spring and late summer months with still-high wait times are those they are feasting!

In November, new VA chief Robert McDonald said he wanted to hire 28,000 doctors, nurses and other staff. That might be hard to pull off. The Association of American Medical Colleges said in a study it requested, “Projections from 2013 to 2025,” that by 2025 “demand for physicians will exceed supply by a range of 46,000 to 90,000.” That leaves Choice, the VA program that allows veterans who live too far from a VA facility to get care in the community. The VA recently redefined the 40-mile requirement from as the crow flies to actual driving mileage. If you qualify, sign up for it. See www. va.gov/opa/choiceact, or call 866-6068198.

Once they do finally fly away, ideally you are left with lots of

ladybug larvae. The larvae will eat up to ten times what the adult can eat! But be aware! The larvae look very different then the adults so don’t mistake it for a pest! Another lesser known insect but equally as beneficial is a nematode. This amazing guy is microscopic but can travel as fast as an inch an hour! The whole time seeking an insect to which it will climb inside and release a deadly bacteria into. So while the Ladybug is busy eating many of our garden pests above ground, the nematode is busy taking care of the pests below ground; Cutworms, Japanese beetle grubs, root weevils, borers, thrips, and fungus gnat larvae are just a few! One of the best things about nematodes, besides their long list of prey, has to be that they are highly reproductive. Two nematodes can produce up to 200,000 more in a two week period. You would want to release your nematodes on a cool evening or cloudy day much like Ladybugs. They come soaked in a sponge described as a microscopic Earth Worm. So you can see how damp cool soil is best for them to be released onto. Releasing 1 million nematodes is said to cover 2000 sq. ft.

SNIPPETZ™ HEALTH AND WELLNESS family history of varicose veins, you should get an ultrasound to determine if you have venous insufficiency. The treatments have essentially no down time and can mean one less medication for many people. In addition, just because you can’t see visible varicosities does not mean you do not have venous insufficiency. We have patients with beautiful legs whose ultrasound reveals large veins under the surface. -- Melissa A. Sandman, M.D.

TEETH GRINDING COMMON IN ELDERLY DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother-inlaw is 95 and lives in a nursing home. Sometimes when we visit, I can barely stand to be in her presence because she savagely grinds her teeth, making an awful grating, creaking noise. Could there be some medical reason for this? -- L.D. ANSWER: Many conditions common in the elderly are associated with teeth grinding. (We have medical terms for pretty much everything -- teeth grinding is called bruxism.) Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia (a type of memory loss often associated with visual hallucinations and movement disorders), stroke, Parkinson’s disease and many medications can cause this problem. Treatment is difficult. A mouth guard to protect the teeth can be very useful, but some people won’t keep them in. Her geriatrician is the right person to discuss this with. Some medications (especially some classes of antidepressants) can cause or worsen daytime bruxism, so stopping those may help. Drug treatment of daytime bruxism is not very helpful. Botulinum toxin (Botox) has been effective in some instances. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Don’t forget that although there are many medical causes of restless leg syndrome, varicose veins also can be a source of symptoms, and we have cured many people of symptoms with minimally invasive varicose vein treatments. We always recommend that if you have visible varicosities or strong

ANSWER: Thank you for writing. Many people also have written about other causes and treatments for restless leg syndrome, so I wanted to talk a bit more about this important subject. In addition to the iron deficiency I mentioned and the varicose veins Dr. Sandman writes about, there are several other important causes, including kidney disease, usually when dialysis has started. Diabetics have a higher risk for RLS, which sometimes can be mistaken for diabetic neuropathy. Multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease are both associated with RLS, and Parkinson’s is important because when medicines such as levodopa/ carbidopa (Sinemet) wear off, it can mimic RLS symptoms. When dopa drugs are used long-term for RLS, symptoms can get worse, a condition called augmentation. Pregnant women are more likely to have RLS. Many drugs, especially antidepressants, can cause RLS. I had a reader tell me that hers was due to Benadryl she was taking for sleep. Magnesium deficiency is common in RLS, and several readers told me magnesium supplements stopped their symptoms. The booklet on restless leg syndrome and nighttime cramps offers more insights. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 306W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

• It was American playwright Wilson Mizner who made the following sage observation: “Copy from one, it’s plagiarism; copy from two, it’s research.” • If you went into a restaurant for breakfast in the 1930s and ordered “cluck and grunt,” the server would know to bring you ham and eggs. • Irish mom Maria Jones-Elliott holds the distinction of having twins with the longest interval between the two births. In 2012, she went into labor almost four months before her due date. After two days of labor, one of the girls was born, but then the contractions stopped. While Amy, born weighing just 1 pound, 3 ounces, continued to improve in the neonatal intensive care unit, her sister Kate continued to grow in utero -- for another 87 days. Against all odds, both twins survived and are now thriving toddlers.

• A recent study conducted by researchers at the Nara University of Education in Japan found that music affects people’s generosity. Specifically, if you’re listening to music you enjoy, you’re likely to be more generous than if there were no music playing at all. In this scenario, the inverse is also true: If you’re listening to a song you dislike, you’re more likely to be stingy. • The next time you travel to Sweden for a vacation, try to catch a Kaninhoppning competition; you’ll be treated to a spectacle of rabbit show jumping. • You might be surprised to learn that seven out of eight battle deaths suffered by all countries participating in World War II were suffered by the Russians and the Germans.

CHOOSE SUNGLASSES FOR MORE THAN STYLE

H

ere comes summer ... and the sun’s damaging glare. Do your sunglasses protect your eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays? An American Optometric Association survey found that nearly half of us don’t look for the level of UV protection when we buy sunglasses. The short-term effects of UV rays can

result in actual sunburn of the eye, called photokeratitis. While the condition is temporary, the symptoms can be painful: light sensitivity, tearing and a feeling of grit or a foreign body in the eye. Longer-term effects of exposure to UV rays can be much more serious: macular degeneration, cataracts and even cancer of the areas around the eye. Here are some of the AOA guidelines to look for when buying sunglasses: • Choose sunglasses that block 75 percent to 90 percent of visible light and at least 99 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays. If you wear contacts that don’t offer that protection, you need sunglasses. Consider ordering a specific pair of prescription sunglasses with the correct range of UV protection.

• Pick sunglasses that closely fit your face to keep UV rays from reaching your eyes from the side. Add a widebrimmed hat. Remember that the UV protection level isn’t determined by the darkness of the lenses. • Check the lens color carefully. Avoid sunglasses where the lenses don’t exactly match in color or that have distortions. Look at something in the distance to be sure it doesn’t look wavy. (If you’re driving, choose a gray tint for better color recognition of things around you.) And don’t forget the kids. Their eyes are much more vulnerable to harmful effects of UV rays. Get them in the habit of wearing sunglasses when outdoors.

14

Here are some terms to help you understand the different types of lenses. * Blue blocking: good for seeing distant objects in snow or haze. * Photochromic lenses: lighten and darken according to the light around you. * Polarized lenses: reduce the glare from water or snow, great for driving. * Gradient tint: darker at the top and lighter at the bottom. Your best bet is to make a visit to your optometrist. To locate one in your area, go online to aoa.org. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

LIVING GOD’S GIFTS bringing Christ into your financial life

INVESTING FROM A BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE

by Chuck Maher, CFP®

...BRING CHRIST INTO OUR FINANCIAL LIVES

ARE YOU MAKING EXCUSES?

Y

ou know the old adage it takes money to make money. That may or may not be true. However, when it comes to investing, especially in the stock market, there are a lot of people who are making money and are not investing any of it. According to a recent study by the Bankrate.com over half of all Americans have no money invested in the stock market. The number one reason given by those who chose not to invest was lack of money. Yet, 46% of the respondents were making more than $75,000 per year. There were many more reasons given for not investing. Though, as I read through them, they seemed to me to be more like excuses. Are you making excuses?

No Money There are people who are suffering from financial hardships that make investing an impossibility. For the rest of us, however, investing is a choice. It’s about priorities. What is it that you consider important? And what are you going to do about? If retirement is your priority then pay yourself first. That’s an old song but it works. If you are only able to set aside a little bit, but investing those little bits and letting the markets over time do their work you will be amazed at what can be achieved. When I work with clients who are trying to build their retirement portfolios I often suggest that they start small. Invest what little you can today and make it a monthly commitment. Then every few months increase it. Again just a little bit and then continue to increase it until you feel it. Then back your investments off just a touch. It’s amazing how much room there is to save and invest when it’s made a priority.

Don’t Know Enough Lack of knowledge shouldn’t keep

Honoring God with Your Financial Blessings CHUCK MAHER CFP

you out of the stock markets. You don’t need to know P/E ratios, market trends, Sharpe ratios or the difference between a put and call to succeed at investing. I’m not saying that knowledge isn’t a good thing and it does make sense to increase your financial IQ. However, making a plan and sticking to it will take you much farther than worrying about that which you do not know. It doesn’t take a lot of knowledge to get things moving. A great place to start is with a balanced mutual fund. These funds are generally made up of investments in high grade bonds and dividend paying stocks. They provide immediate diversification at an affordable price. Many balanced mutual funds even offer systematic investment plans that start for as little as $50. If you are uncomfortable making the decision yourself there are financial professionals who can help you get started. Most offer initial consultations at no cost.

Too Risky The stock market will go up and down. There will be years when the market provides unbelievable returns and there will also be years where the markets will be down so low it would appear that they will never recover. That is normal. It is the short-term risk of investing in stocks. However for the long-term investor, someone saving for retirement, it may well be far too risky not to be invested in equities.

Remember the average return for the Standard & Poor’s 500, with dividends reinvested, over the last 50 years has been 10.9%. That’s impressive given the turmoil that we have gone through. In his 2008 letter to shareholders Warren Buffett wrote: Though the path has not been smooth, our economic system has worked extraordinarily well over time. It has unleashed human potential as no other system has, and it will continue to do so. America’s best days lie ahead. By adding stock equities to your long-term investment portfolio you put yourself in the position to take advantage of America’s best days yet ahead.

If you are holding investments for the long term in CDs, money market accounts or other cash investments you are taking on a long-term risk you may not be prepared for. Cash investments, especially insured cash investments, promise the return of your money – not the return of your purchasing power. For every year you hold cash, inflation will eat away at your purchasing power. Even with a long-term inflation rate of 3%, your money will lose half of its purchasing power in 24 years.

“The way of the fool seems right in his own eyes, but he who listens to advice is wise.” Proverbs 15:21
